Etiquette Tips from Polished Peyton

ET I Q U E T T E T I PS POLISHED PEYTON

by Jennifer Daniel

Afew months ago, a lady stopped me in the grocery store to tell me how much she enjoyed reading the etiquette tips each month. As we parted ways she said, “I bet you never miss a beat with all of this.” I smiled and replied, “I absolutely do.” The truth is, we all do.

This month, I thought it would be fun to talk about five ways we all break etiquette rules, occasionally.

1. Forgetting to Introduce Others Whether at work, a neighborhood picnic, or a child’s birthday party, the situation is the same. If you are standing with someone and another person walks up, you should make an introduction. Even if you don’t know the person or maybe you forgot their name (it happens) introductions are still in order. Simply apologize and say something like, “Hello, It is so great to see you. This is my neighbor, Elizabeth. Please remind me of your first name again.”

Breaking the Rules

2. Announcing That You’re Going to the Restroom. We all do this. Dinner with good friends leads to stories and laughter. We hate to jump up, so it’s almost apologetic: “I’m going to the rest room. I’ll be right back. Don’t say anything funny until I return.” No matter who we are with, all we really need to say is, “Excuse me, I’ll be right back.”

3. Being Late. We all have that one friend. The friend that arrives late to everything so you tell them it starts thirty minutes earlier in hopes they make it on time. Being late once in a while happens to all of us. Traffic really was backed up, our babysitter really was late, or the dog ran off. Occasional tardiness happens, but don’t let it become a habit. If you are running late, call or text the friends or co-workers you are meeting. Let them know what happened and what time you expect to join them.

4. Covering Your Mouth with

Your Right Hand. For most of us, it’s the hand we use to pass the salt, use a pen, or shake the hand of a friend or new acquaintance. Make an effort this week to use your left hand to cover your mouth if you yawn, touch your face, or sneeze. It comes so natural to use our dominant hand for everything – it will take practice to use your left.

5. Drinking as the Subject of a Toast. If people are toasting you, you do not drink to yourself. It’s like standing up and patting yourself on the back and then also clapping loudly. As the subject of the toast, you should just smile and nod.

Inaugural Running of the Bulls

Not too long ago, EIL introduced you to Kids Can Fish Foundation, a local non-profit that encourages kids and their families to get out and fish. They’re excited to be hosting their first major surf fishing tournament in October and want to spread the word and invite you to run with the bulls … bull redfish, that is!

The St. Simons Island Running of the Bulls Charity Redfish Tournament will take place rain or shine on October 9-10 at Coast Guard Beach. Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. in the beach parking lot. First cast will be at 8:00 a.m. daily and lines in at 4:30 p.m. each day. Cash prizes for top 5 adult anglers and fishing/youth-related prizes for youth winners will be based on entries. Prize pools will be announced by September 9th. Registration fees: $65 Adult, $35 Youth (15 and younger). First 30 youth participants receive a FREE Kids Can Fish bait bucket ($25 value). All youth participants must be accompanied by an adult guardian. Social events are planned and will feature raffles, auctions, and giveaways, including a free Kickoff Party on October 8 at Silver Bluff Brewing in Brunswick from 6:30-10:30 p.m. with music, food trucks, and great drinks. The times and locations for a Day 1 Social on 10/9 and Awards Ceremony on 10/10 will be announced.

TOURNAMENT RULES: All adult anglers must possess a current Georgia Saltwater Fishing License and abide by state fishing guidelines. This is NOT a team event. Single anglers only unless an adult is assisting a youth angler. Youth anglers are encouraged to do most of the work. It’s recommended that youth anglers to remain in shallow waters and wear personal floatation devices. Youth must be strictly monitored if entering the surf. Adults can cast for youth and are also permitted to take fish off the hook and prepare for release. Youth are encouraged to bait their own hooks, but can be assisted by an adult. Adult parter can hold the rod at base, but youth must reel in the fish. Fighting belts are permitted. Tournament zones must be adhered to and will be determined by participant numbers.

SCORING: Qualifying fish are recorded by Catch, Photo, and safe Release. Tournament official must record each fish. Total length decides winner. Most spots determine tie breaker. Leaderboard will be updated in real time via the group Facebook page.

EQUIPMENT: Boats, kayaks, and air delivery of bait are prohibited. 2 rods per person maximum. Live, frozen, and artificial baits are permitted. Only circle hooks can be used.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. To sponsor a youth entry or become an in-kind or financial sponsor of this event as a business, email thomas@kidscanfish.net to request. Kids Can Fish is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization for tax purposes. The tournament will also need 20-30 volunteers each day. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Tournament Director at Brandon@kidscanfish.net.

Your participant will greatly impact the life of youth anglers locally and nationwide as portions of tournament proceeds will benefit the Kids Can Fish Foundation.
