Eight Rules of Interview Etiquette

Whether you are interviewing for your first summer job or hoping to receive a promotion at work, your interview skills will always set you apart from others. Your references and resume matter, but the impression you make when speaking with one person or a group will oftentimes make or break the deal. Follow these rules before, during and after the interview.

1. Social Media. Think before you post. Always post as if your potential employer can see what you’re sharing. There’s a good chance they can or will.

2. Rehearse. Grab your mom, best friend, or sibling, and practice the interview.

3. Do your Research. Applying to be the summer nanny for three children? Know their names and ages. Do you already know they vacation in Asheville, North Carolina every summer? Ask what they love to do, but also walk in with a few ideas you think they might enjoy. Interviewing with a company? Know when it was founded. Know their mission. State something specific that drew you to interview with them.

4. Dress the Part. It’s always better to overdress than underdress. If you wear bracelets, don’t put them on your right wrist; they make a “clanking” sound when you shake hands. Wear simple make-up and very little perfume.

5. Smile. A smile will always make you appear friendly, confident, and approachable.

6. Ask Questions. A conversation is like a tennis match. You hit, they hit. In this case, it’s not about winning, it’s about keeping the ball going. Have a few questions in mind before you walk in. Once you arrive, look around at your surroundings and find a few questions from that. conversation when appropriate. You might be surprised at the role each plays in the decision-making process.

8. Write a Thank-you Note. Yes, a handwritten note is mandatory.

Be prepared and polite and remember that practice makes perfect. It might take a few interviews until you land your dream role, but it will be worth it!
