SOAR WITH A LEGEND

Don’t miss your chance to fly in the iconic B-29 Superfortress “FIFI” and B-24 Liberator “Diamond Lil” when they visit the Brunswick-Golden Isles Airport along with some other impressive friends. The Commemorative Air Force AirPower History Tour will be in town Wednesday, May 18 through Sunday, May 22. You’ll have the opportunity to tour the legendary planes on the ground, as well as the P-51 Mustang “Gunfighter,” a T-6 Texan warbird, and a Boeing Stearman open cockpit biplane, or ride in one or all of these historic aircraft. TAPS AT TWILIGHT TRADITION CONTINUES

Memorial Day on St. Simons Island would not be complete without the annual Taps at Twilight program presented by the Rotary Club of St. Simons. This moving tribute and traditional observance of the holiday began in 1991 to honor the men and women who have fallen in the service of our country, those who have valiantly served and returned, and those who are serving today. The ceremony takes place in Neptune Park at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, May 30 and will feature an honor guard presentation, patriotic music recognizing all branches of service, an address by a guest speaker (to be announced), and concludes with the haunting notes of Taps. HONOR OUR HEROES

Come out to the Brunswick-Golden Isles Airport on Saturday, May 7 to welcome our local veterans home from their visit to national war memorials in Washington D.C. aboard the 2022 Coastal Georgia Honor Flight. Wear your patriotic attire and bring signs of support to remind our heroes that we remain grateful for their past service. The flight is scheduled to return to Brunswick from Washington D.C. at 9:00 p.m. and occasionally comes in ahead of schedule, so get there early. Your support is greatly appreciated, especially after two years without these flights.

BEGIN YOUR SUMMER STARGAZING

Kick your summer off early by attending the STARgazing Low Country Boil in the magnificent marshside setting of Village Creek Landing on Thursday, May 19. Enjoy an evening under the starry skies with delicious Southern fare and refreshing cocktails plus live music by local 80s cover band Squirt Gun to get you dancing. Fun begins at 6:00 p.m. Men, you can also don your daffiest duds to compete to be crowned King in the return of last year’s popular Crazy Pants Contest. Proceeds benefit STAR of Coastal Georgia. WOMPZILLA RETURNS

St. Simons Island’s legendary skimboarding event is back in 2022 and will be held on the beach at Massengale Park Sunday, May 22. This full day of good, clean fun begins with a 10:00 a.m. check-in, followed by Skim School with Randy, and then the big event at noon. After the wet and wild competition, head to Frosty’s at 5:00 p.m. for the awards ceremony and live music by The Pinebox Dwellers. Competition is divided by age groups with trophies awarded to top 3 freestyle and longest ride placements in each division: Squirts 5-9, Groms 10-13, Shredders 14-17, and Fossils 18+. Parent/guardian permission required to enter if under 18. Grand prize is a WaveZone skimboard and the worst wipeout gets the coveted Golden Broom! Proceeds benefit The Firebox Initiative. A MUSICAL WITHIN A COMEDY

The Island Players present The Drowsy Chaperone, a parody of American musical comedy of the 1920s. On stage, a middle-aged, asocial musical theatre fan plays the soundtrack of their favorite musical, the fictional 1928 hit The Drowsy Chaperone, and the show comes to life onstage, with wry commentary on the music, story, and actors. Directed by Josh Sinyard.
