PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Vacation/Staycation

S

ummer is FINALLY here! Since we have basically been cooped up all spring, let’s make up for it by having a great summer! If you are visiting St. Simons Island, thank you for coming. We want you to feel like a local. If you’re a local, we want you to feel like you are on vacation. In other words, LET’S HAVE SOME FUN! There are so many great restaurants, retail shops and activities to experience here on the island. Be sure to check out page 18 for a list of our advertising “All Stars.” We urge you to visit and support as many of these local businesses as possible. We’ve come up with lots of suggestions on how to have fun around the area in this June/July “Summer” issue. We’ve also included the EIL Pocket Guide, our pocketsized publication filled with handy information about local attractions and happenings and more great ideas for year-round activities.

3. Shop early or late. You can apply the same reasoning to shopping. Many of our terrific local retail shops open at 10:00 a.m. and stay open later in the evening during the summer months. Enjoy a little retail therapy before you hit the beach or do some window shopping after dinner.

Here are a few suggestions to help insure a fantastic vacation/staycation! 4. Try spending a day in each “section” of 1. Ride your bike EVERYWHERE. By that,

Most importantly, now that we have the time, enjoy the island lifestyle and come back to see us soon!

I N T H I S I S S U E ’ S F E AT U R E , we’re turning our attention to the men. We’ll be sharing information about some famous men associated with our fair state of Georgia, recipes from various other noteworthy men that were compiled in a Stag Cookbook, and tidbits of advice from classic TV dads. If you need inspiration for Father’s Day gifts, we’re showcasing products from local retailers that

cater to a wide variety of hobbies.

THERE ARE FAMOUS MEN that everyone knows hail from Georgia: Johnny Mercer, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ray Charles, and Jimmy Carter, to name a few. The EIL staff has learned about other fascinating men from the area, like lighthouse builder James Gould and aviator Paul Redfern while researching local history over the years. While working on a recent story, we came across a reference to a man whose history was unknown to us, but whose exploits were quite legendary. Inspired by that, we decided to share some stories of other noteworthy men with Georgia connections you might not know.

achlan McIntosh was our inspiration. A Scottish Highlander who arrived in Georgia at the age of eight, McIntosh was the son of John Mor McIntosh, one of the earliest settlers of the colony of Georgia who helped established the town of New Inverness (now Darien) in 1736. Lachlan lived at the Bethesda orphanage near Savannah when his father was captured by the Spanish and imprisoned in 1740. Two years later, he left Bethesda to serve as a cadet in the military regiment at Fort Frederica, under orders from General James Oglethorpe. After his father died, Lachlan and his brother, William, planned to return to Scotland to join the Jacobite rebellion. Fortunately General Oglethorpe stepped in and convinced Lachlan that their future was in Georgia. It’s a good thing he did, because the rebellion did not turn out well for the supporters of “Bonnie Prince Charlie” Stuart. In 1748, at the age of 21, McIntosh moved to Charleston and became a clerk for merchant Henry Laurens. He returned to Georgia after marrying and became a prosperous rice planter with property on the Altamaha River delta. He also studied surveying and in 1767 surveyed the town of Darien that had been established 30 years earlier by his father. McIntosh aligned himself with the American independence movement and in 1775 he helped organize delegates to the Provincial Congress from Darien. McIntosh served during the Revolutionary War and by January 1776 he had been appointed colonel and commander of the Georgia Battalion. He organized the defense of

Savannah, repelling a British attack during the Battle of the Rice Boats in the Savannah River. Promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the Continental army, McIntosh planned the defense of Georgia’s southern flank from British incursions from Florida. It was during this time that McIntosh became embroiled in a political dispute with Button Gwinnett. Resentful of McIntosh’s success and advancement, Gwinnett wanted the command of the Georgia forces. The animosity between them came to a head on May 16, 1777, when a duel took place and both men were wounded. Gwinnett did not recover and died three days later. His allies had McIntosh charged with murder, and although he was acquitted at trial, George Washington feared they would take revenge and ordered McIntosh to report to Continental Army headquarters. McIntosh spent the difficult winter of 1777–1778 in command of several regiments of troops with the Continental Army at Valley Forge. He was then assigned to the important command of the Western Department. With Washington’s support, McIntosh was entrusted to lead an expedition against Britain’s Indian allies in the Ohio Valley. He established Fort Laurens and Fort McIntosh, which helped solidify American control of the Northwest after the Revolution. In 1779. Washington ordered McIntosh to return to the South to join General Benjamin Lincoln in Charleston. He marched to Augusta, in command of the Georgia troops, and then proceeded to Savannah, where he commanded the 1st and 5th South Carolina regiments during the siege of Savannah. Following that battle, he retired his troops to Charleston where he remained to defend the city from the Brit-

ish Army. On May 12, 1780, General Lincoln was forced to surrender the city to the British. McIntosh was taken prisoner and remained in captivity until a prisoner exchange on February

9, 1782. The Peace of Paris which recognized American independence and transferred East and West Florida to Spain brought an end to the war in 1783. When McIntosh returned to his plantation, he discovered it had been ruined by the occupying British. He tried to restore his property and business interests but was met with little success. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1784 and was appointed a commissioner to treat with the southern American Indian tribes the following year. In 1787, his diplomatic skills were called upon to help settle a boundary dispute between Georgia and South Carolina. Four years later he was part of the delegation to officially welcome President George Washington to Georgia. McIntosh died in Savannah on February 20, 1806, just short of his 80th birthday. Scottish immigrant, soldier and commander, war captive, plantation owner, duel survivor, diplomat – he certainly lived a full life.

John Henry ”Doc“ Holliday (1851-1887, Griffin, GA)

D

oc Holliday is another man who lived a life full of adventure. Known best for his role in the legendary shootout at the O.K. Corral, few people probably realize he was from Georgia. Holliday was born on August 14, 1851 to druggist Henry Burroughs Holliday and his wife Alice Jane in the cotton town of Griffin, GA. He required corrective surgery for a cleft palate and his mother spent endless hours working with him to correct his speech. The Southern etiquette and manners she imparted to him were something distinct in his demeanor throughout his entire life. Holliday poured himself into his studies following his mother’s death of tuberculosis in 1866 and moved to Philadelphia to attend dental school, graduating in 1872. Holliday only returned to the South for a short time when he began his dental career. He abruptly

moved to Dallas, Texas at the age of 23, perhaps because he too had contracted tuberculosis and thought he’d fare better with the drier air. In Dallas, Holliday’s dental career fell by the wayside as he developed a reputation for drinking, card playing, and fighting. After escaping a charge of murder in Dallas, Holliday moved from city to city before settling down in Dodge City, Kansas. This hot spot for gunfighters was where he befriended Wyatt Earp. He later followed Earp to Tombstone, Arizona, a mining and frontier town near the Mexican border.

intense firefight with cowboys Ike and Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury and his brother Tom. This 30 second battle became known as the Shootout at the O.K. Corral. More than 30 shots were fired in the exchange and three men died. Several others, including Holliday, were wounded. It’s arguably the most legendary gunfight ever fought in the American West. Both Holliday and Earp were arrested for murder but were quickly released. When his brother Morgan was killed following the fight, Earp went on a vendetta ride accompanied by Holliday, which lasted well into 1882.

It was in Tombstone, on October 26, 1881, that Holliday and the Earps engaged in an

Holliday later split from Earp and moved to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where his

health continued to deteriorate. When he died of tuberculosis at the Hotel Glenwood on November 8, 1887, his death reverberated around the country. The Denver Republican wrote, “Few men have been better known to a certain class of sporting people, and few men of his character had more friends or stronger companions. He represented a class of men who are disappearing in the new West. He had the reputation of being a bunco man, desperado, and bad-man generally, yet he was a very mild-mannered man, was genial and companiable, and had many excellent qualities.” One could argue that this demonstrates the value of a good Southern upbringing.

Cookbook.

Written by C. Mac Sheridan and published in

1922, this book touts itself as “a man’s cookbook for men.” Inside its pages are recipes and anecdotes shared by influential men of the era. Some of the entries are humorous, others are culinary madness. We chose some of these recipes to share by men whose names you’ll recognize and a few simply for the way they were written. If you’re brave, you might want to try to recreate a few.

Charlie Chaplin

houdini

Yes, that Houdini. The legendary magician supplied two recipes in the cookbook. We bet guests made those deviled eggs disappear!

Scalloped Mushrooms

Choose for this purpose fine firm ones. Pick, wash, wipe, and peel – then lay them in a deep pudding dish well buttered. Season them with pepper and salt, and add a little onion. Sprinkle each layer with rolled bread crumbs, dot with small pieces of butter and proceed in this way until dish is full, having the top layer of bread crumbs. Bake in a moderate oven.

Deviled Eggs

Boil the eggs hard. Remove shells and cut eggs in half, slicing a bit off the ends to make them stand upright. Extract yolks and rub them to a smooth paste with melted butter, cayenne pepper, a touch of mustard and a dash of vinegar. Fill the hollowed whites with this and send to table upon a bed of chopped lettuce or water cress, seasoned with pepper, salt, vinegar and a little sugar.

As the cookbook editor noted, the dish shared by the film star was a popular one of the time. He didn’t share the recipe for the pastry crust used in the pie, but it’s fun to think of him dusted with a bit of flour, rolling out dough.

Steak and Kidney Pie THIS IS HOW I DO IT:

Get 2 pounds lean steak 1 beef kidney 1 small onion

Cut the steak and kidney into two inch pieces. Flour them. Add pepper and salt to taste. Line a deep pie dish with rich pie crust after having buttered dish. Put inverted egg cup in center. Fill with meat and finely chopped onion. Add water almost to top of dish. Roll pastry half inch thick and cover all. Make several small holes in pastry to permit steam to escape. Bake three hours in moderate oven. Eat. COOKBOOK EDITOR’S NOTE: Steak and kidney pie is a favorite with many beside the great film comedian. Interesting variations of Mr. Chaplin’s recipe are: Lamb kidney instead of beef kidney. Top crust only. Fry the meat chunks before putting them into the pie.

orn in Cairo, Georgia in 1919 to a family of sharecroppers, Jack Roosevelt Robinson would become the first baseball player to break the Major League Baseball color barrier that segregated the sport for more than 50 years. Jackie and his four siblings were raised by their mother, Mallie, and were a close-knit family. They encountered prejudice regularly as the only Black family on their block. Jackie excelled early at all sports and learned to make his own way in life. Jackie attended UCLA and became the first athlete to win varsity letters in four sports: baseball, basketball, football and track. He was named to the AllAmerican football team in 1941. He had to leave college due to financial difficulties and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Jackie’s army career was cut short when he was court-martialed because of his objections to incidents of racial discrimination. In the end, Robinson left the Army with an honorable discharge. In 1945, Robinson played a season with the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro Baseball League, traveling all over the Midwest. He was approached by Branch Rickey, president of the Major League team Brooklyn Dodgers, about joining the Dodgers in 1947. No African-American players had played in the

J ac ki e R o b i n s o n (1919-1972, Cairo, GA)

Major Leagues since baseball became segregated in 1889. Jackie became a pioneer of the integration of professional athletics in the U.S. By breaking the color barrier in baseball, the nation’s preeminent sport, he bravely challenged the deep-rooted custom of racial segregation that existed in both the North and South. Jackie became National League Rookie of the Year with 12 homers, a league-leading 29 steals, and a .297 average. In 1949, he was selected as the National League’s Most Valuable player of the Year and also won the batting title with a .342 average. Robinson once told Hank Aaron that “the game of baseball is great, but the greatest thing is what you do after your career is over.” Suffering physical ailments, Robinson retired from baseball at age 37 on January 5, 1957. Later that year he was diagnosed with diabetes and his physical condition continued to deteriorate. In Robinson’s first year of eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, he encouraged voters to consider only his on-field qualifications, rather than his cultural impact on the game. He was selected on the first ballot, becoming the first Black player inducted into the museum in Cooperstown. Jackie Robinson’s life and legacy has a very important place in American history and were

a defining step in the civil rights revolution. Robinson’s breaking of the baseball color line and his professional success symbolized broader changes in the world and demonstrated that the fight for equality was more than simply a political matter. Martin Luther King, Jr. called Robinson “a legend and a symbol in his own time” and said that he “challenged the dark skies of intolerance and frustration.” One historian noted that Robinson’s accomplishments “allowed Black and White Americans to be more respectful and open to one another and more appreciative of everyone’s abilities.” On the 50th Anniversary of the year Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier, all Major League teams across the nation celebrated the milestone occasion of Robinson’s historic debut, honoring the man who stood defiantly against racism and acknowledging the profound influence of Jackie Robinson’s life on the American culture. In 1999, he was named by Time on its list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. That same year he ranked number 44 on the Sporting News list of Baseball’s 100 Greatest Players and was elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team as the top vote-getter among second basemen. Robinson once said, “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me ... all I ask is that you respect me as a human being.” Mission accomplished, sir.

F

ootball legend and actor Jim Brown was born right here on St. Simons Island on February 17, 1936, and raised as a child by his great-grandmother. He left the island to live with his mother in New York when he was eight years old. He began making a name for himself on the football field at Manhasset High School, averaging an astonishing 14.9 yards per carry his senior year. This earned the young running back a spot at Syracuse University. In college, Brown dominated his competition not only on the football field, but also on the basketball court. In addition, he was a talented lacrosse player and ran track. Brown himself once said “Lacrosse is probably the best sport I ever played,” and earned All-American honors and a spot in the Lacrosse Hall of Fame due to his achievements in the sport. It was his strong, explosive, dominant play as a running back on the football field, however, that earned him national attention. He left a memorable impression in the final regular-season game of his senior year of college by rushing for 197 yards, scoring six touchdowns and even added seven extra points as a kicker. He finished the year with 14 touchdowns and made Firstteam All-American. Surprisingly, he only finished 5th in Heisman voting. Brown was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 1957 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. He led the league in rushing yards in his debut season and earned the league’s Rookie of the Year honors. Over the next seven seasons, Brown set the standard for NFL running backs. At a time when defenses were primarily geared toward stopping the ground game, Brown powered his way past the opposition, posting remarkable season totals: 1,527 yards (1958), 1,329 (1959), 1,257 (1960), 1,408 (1961), 1,863 (1963), 1,446 (1964) and 1,544 (1965). The single season of his career that he failed to lead the league in rushing yards was in 1962, when he rushed for “only” 996 yards. In 1964, when Brown steered Cleveland to the NFL championship, the Browns handily shut out

Baltimore to win the title, with Brown running for 114 yards. Brown stunned the sports world by announcing his retirement from football to pursue other goals prior to the start of the 1966 season. Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. Brown then turned his focus to a movie career and has appeared in more than 30 films. His credits include The Dirty Dozen, 100 Rifles, Mars Attacks! and Any Given Sunday, in which he played a football coach. Brown also used his fame and influence in the service of AfricanAmerican causes. He used his voice as a civil rights activist and turned philanthropic efforts toward supporting the Black community. In the 1960s, he threw his support behind Blackowned businesses by helping to create the Negro Industrial Economic Union. In the late 1980s, he started the Amer-I-Can program, which aimed to turn the lives around of young gang members. Brown served as executive

adviser to the Browns from 2005 to 2010, and later was named the club’s special advisor. In 2016, Brown was honored with a statue outside Cleveland’s FirstEnergy Stadium. In 2002, The Sporting News named Jim Brown the greatest football player ever. In January of this year, Brown was recognized as the top college football player of all time during the halftime ceremony of the college football National Championship game. He was also ranked as the top running back and number four player overall on the NFL’s top 100 players of all time list. These rankings probably don’t mean much to Brown, however, as he has said, “I don’t teach kids to be number one. Organizations and people that tell you you have to be number one; that’s not it. You don’t have to be number one. What I teach is to be as good as you can be. Use what you have and be as good as you can be. That’s all you can do, anyway.” Jim Brown did exactly that – and he was GOOD!

Bobby Jones (1902-1971, Atlanta, GA)

A

s we live on a little drinking island with a golf problem, we can’t discuss Georgia men who’ve made an impact in sports without acknowledging Bobby Jones. Unquestionably Jones was the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete at a national and international level. From 1923 to 1930, his peak years, he dominated top-level amateur competition, and competed very successfully against the world’s best professional golfers. Jones did not make a living at golf, however, he was a practicing attorney, and only competed as an amateur, mostly part-time. He retired from competition at age 28. Jones explained his decision by saying, “It [championship golf ] is something like a cage. First you are expected to get into it and then you are expected to stay there. But of course, nobody can stay there.” As a player, Jones is best known for his unique “Grand Slam,” consisting of his victory in all four major golf tournaments of his era (the open and amateur championships in both the U.S. & the U.K.) in a single calendar year (1930). In his entire career, Jones played in 31 majors, with 13 wins and 27 top

ten finishes. He is consistently ranked among the top 10 golfers of all time by golf publications and media. Following Jones’ retirement, and even in the years leading up to that, Jones had become one of the most famous sports figures in the world, and was recognized virtually everywhere he went in public. While appreciative of the adulation and media coverage, Jones lost his personal privacy in golf circles and it became his desire to create a private golf club where he and his friends could play golf in peace and quiet. Thus, in 1933, Jones founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club. He also co-founded the Masters Tournament, which has been staged by the club annually since 1934 (except for 1943–45 due to WWII, and this year, due to COVID-19). The tournament, originally known as the Augusta National Invitational, was an immediate success, and attracted most of the world’s top players from the beginning and has evolved into one of golf ’s four major championships. Jones came out of retirement to play in the

Masters on an exhibition basis through 1948. The innovations that Jones introduced at the Masters have been copied by virtually every professional golf tournament in the world. Jones died in 1971, but his legacy lives on amongst the azaleas and in every swing taken at Augusta National.

have a fondness for tomato soup and steak without grizzles. Since almost anyone can broil a steak I’ll pass that up and tell you how to play cream of tomato right around the kitchen course in par.

Tomato Soup

You can take ripe tomatoes, cut them up, stew them and put them through a strainer. You can add a bit of soup stock and seasoning and all that, but the easy way is to take some of Mr. Campbell’s tomato soup and add milk instead of water – only use more soup, per person, than the can label calls for. Don’t boil it – but when the soup is good and hot give it a bit of informal seasoning and then stir in a lot of stiff whipped cream. Keep back enough of the whipped cream to put a big spoonful of it in the center of each plate. Use the can opener at the first tee and with luck you’ll be on the dinner table in an easy three. Play out of the soup plate with a good sized spoon for a par four – and there you are!

C h i c k e va n s

If you don’t recognize the name, Chick was one of the most accomplished American amateur golfers of his time. In 1916, he became the first golfer to win both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open in the same year, a feat that only Bobby Jones has matched.

You’ll be able to whip the cream without detailed directions. The important thing is choosing the right egg beater or cream whipper or whatever you use. The next important thing in whipping cream is stance. You’ll gradually acquire that, after you’ve spattered the front of your vest a time or two, and hooked a few long ones to the wallpaper. I believe that there are some safety devices for whipping cream, but they take all the sport and excitement out of the thing.

Corn Chowder I believe my favorite recipe is Corn Chowder. The appetite for this dish must be approached from the windy side of a promontory in early spring with a sixty pound pack between the shoulder blades, aforementioned pack to contain for a couple of congenial souls a pound of bacon, a pound of dry onions, two cans of corn and one large tin of condensed milk.

Cut the bacon up into small half inch squares and start it frying. Simultaneously slice the onions and give them the heat. If, after the aroma from these two begins to permeate the air, you feel like risking their falling into the fire, start boiling the corn and milk. Before the onions are too thoroughly cooked stir them into the bacon, at which time the battle for the supremacy of the appetizing odors is occupying most of your attention. Now throw the bacon and onions into the corn pot and wait as long as you are able so that the ingredients become thoroughly familiar with one another. Write me as soon as you get home if you don’t remember that day until you are an old man. To make this sound extremely professional I suppose I should add, “Season to taste,” but do not mind if a few ashes get mixed in by mistake

hile many of us remember actor DeForest Kelley as “Bones” McCoy from Star Trek, this Toccoa, Georgia native spent his early days in film playing cowboys and villains in Westerns, including three different roles that portrayed the gunfight at the OK Corral in which our previously mentioned Georgia-born outlaw, Doc Holliday, was a main figure. Kelley’s father was a Baptist minister with a church in Conyers, Georgia and DeForest regularly used his musical talents by singing solo in the morning services. He also began singing on local radio shows and won an engagement with Lew Forbes and his orchestra at the Paramount Theater. Prior to WWII, Kelley made his film debut in 1940’s New Moon and nearly scored the lead of This Gun for Hire. In 1943, Kelley enlisted in the US Army Air Force, and served with the First Motion Picture Unit until 1946. After an extended stay in Long Beach, California, Kelley decided to pursue an acting career and relocate to Southern California permanently. It was there he was spotted by a Para-

mount Pictures scout while doing a US Navy training film. The 1947 low-budget feature film Fear in the Night brought Kelley to the attention of a national audience. His next role, in Variety Girl, established him as a leading actor, however he did not find status as leading man and moved to New York City with his wife to pursue work on stage and on live television. They returned to Hollywood three years later, where he landed a wide variety of episodic television roles and movie offers. Of particular note to Golden Islanders, he appeared in a small role in The View from Pompey’s Head. In 1964, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry first offered Kelley the role of Spock, but he

refused it. Instead taking on the role of the show’s doctor, Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, in 1966. He appeared on the series through 1969 and reprised the character in a voice-over role in Star Trek: The Animated Series, and the first six Star Trek motion pictures. In 1987, he made a cameo appearance as Admiral Leonard McCoy, Starfleet Surgeon General Emeritus in the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In 1991, Kelley received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Kelley once joked in an interview that one of his biggest fears was that the words etched on his gravestone would be “He’s dead, Jim.” Though not on his grave, the obituary Newsweek published about Kelley’s death in 1999 did indeed begin: “We’re not even going to try to resist: He’s dead, Jim.” Kelley claimed his legacy would be the many people McCoy had inspired to become doctors. “That’s something that very few people can say they’ve done. I’m proud to say that I have.” Before his death in 1999, Kelley received a Golden Boot Award for his contribution to the genre of Western television and movies. A true space cowboy.

different sort of cowboy, Gram Parsons was a pioneer of the country-rock genre and continues to influence artists today. Although he was dubbed the “Waif from Waycross,” Parsons actually began life as Ingram Cecil Connor III in Winter Haven, Florida in 1946. His father was an Air Force major and his mother belonged to a prominent family who made a large fortune in the orange industry. When Parsons was young, the family moved to Waycross, Georgia where his father ran the orange crate production plant. Parsons often referred to these years as the happiest of his life, but by the time he graduated from high school, both his father and mother had died. Parsons sang hymns in church and listened to country radio that was popular in Georgia, as well as soul and R&B music that he was exposed to through the family’s domestic help. In 1956, at the age of ten, his musical outlook was rocked when he saw Elvis Presley play at

mic American music.” While the music has its roots embedded in country and honky-tonk, it embraces rock and a counterculture, psychedelic spirit. This is the very essence of what famous designer Nudie Cohn captured in the distinctive flamboyant sequined suit he made for Gram. A widely country look that had been popularized by Hank Williams and Gene Autry, featuring cacti, lassos, and cowboy hats, Gram’s suit was adorned with marijuana leaves, pills, naked women, and a large cross.

the Waycross City Auditorium. Gram attended Harvard University for a single semester, during which he formed the International Submarine Band. The band moved to Los Angeles, where Parsons quickly connected with the West Coast scene. In 1968, they recorded Safe at Home, a mix of classic country music covers and Parsons originals. Even that early endeavor marked the trademark elements of Parsons’ sound: country, rhythm and blues, soul, gospel, and rock. That same year, Parsons joined the established rock band the Byrds as their piano player. His charismatic personality and musical vision immediately transformed the band and can be heard on Sweetheart of the Rodeo, the album they recorded in Nashville in 1968 with much of the material written by Gram. It received critical acclaim as one of the best records of the year and one of the Byrds’ best efforts to date. The Byrds were the first rock-and-roll act to play at the Grand Ol’ Opry. Despite the band’s successes, Parsons was fired from the Byrds due to his partying ways. Undeterred, Parsons immediately formed the Flying Burrito Brothers. They recorded Gilded Palace of Sin in 1969 with more of Parsons’ original material and cover versions of R&B rhythm hits like “Do Right Woman” and “Dark End of the Street.” Eschewing the term “country-rock,” Parsons called his sound “cos-

Despite a small devoted following, album sales were slow and the band was considered to be too country for rock radio, but too rock for Nashville’s country scene. The Flying Burrito Brothers made one more album with Parsons, Burrito Deluxe, in 1970. It features the first recording of “Wild Horses,” a song Parsons helped the Rolling Stones write. Once again Parsons’ erratic lifestyle and escalating drug use created issues and he left the band.

Gram’s collaboration with Emmylou Harris was nothing short of magical. For his comeback solo record, GP, he enlisted the thenunknown folk singer to accompany him on vocals. The duets were so successful that she would contribute again on his second solo album, Grievous Angel. While Parsons’ sound was stripped down and more mature on his solo efforts, they still retained his signature soul and rock elements, and his songwriting had reached new heights. The future looked bright for Parsons’ musical success and word was that he was trying to kick his bad habits. However, on September 19, 1973, Parsons died from an overdose of morphine and tequila while on vacation. What happened next in Joshua Tree is cosmic cowboy legend and a story in itself. Grievous Angel was released posthumously. Parsons’ legacy is still alive and well in Waycross where the Gram Parsons Guitar Pull music festival draws an eager crowd and many talented musicians each year.

What about Burt Reynolds?

D

espite a longstanding myth perpetuated by the man himself, iconic actor Burt Reynolds was NOT born in Waycross, Georgia, but in Lansing, Michigan. “If there’s any confusion about my birth place, it’s my fault,” Reynolds admitted. “I was born in Lansing, Michigan. We moved to Florida when I was five. I grew up a Southern boy who didn’t want to be a Yankee.” And when asked why he chose Waycross in particular for his claim, Reynolds wrote in his autobiography. “I liked the sound of it.” Georgians were happy to claim him as their own, after all, his break-out movie Deliverance was shot primarily in Rabun County and the canoe

scenes were filmed in the Tallulah Gorge, southeast of Clayton, and on the Chattooga River. He was close friends with Atlanta-born musician and Smokey and the Bandit co-star Jerry Reed. And most locals can tell you that his opening car chase scene from 1974’s The Longest Yard was filmed on the original Sidney Lanier Bridge.

Ge or ge F. Worts

This prolific author of pulp stories and series, wrote adventure titles and mysteries, with some of his works being turned to film. Born in Ohio, he worked as a ship’s hand on the Great Lakes as a teen and later served as a Marconi operator on the Pacific and Great Lakes, but his description of Southerners and this dish sounds spot on.

Sweet Potato Pone

T

here are two sure ways of identifying a true southerner. One of them is to play “Dixie.” Unlike your northerner, or counterfeit southerner who springs to his feet and looks exalted and proud when the band strikes up that swinging anthem, your true, or southern southerner rarely springs. Generally he just sets and waggles one boot, and looks happy or sentimental, according to his nature. That is one way of detecting your true southerner. The second and surer way is to announce in a tremulous voice: “Gemmen, dat potato pone am done set.”

The sweet potato pone is strictly a southern dish. It is served south of the Mason and Dixon line hot and smoking. You don’t need much experience as a cook, although the old rule which also places “perfect” after “practice” of course holds good. Your ninth potato pone will be better than your third. Here is the how: Grind up raw sweet potatoes in a meat chopper until you have one quart. Mix the grindings thoroughly in a bowl with molasses – enough molasses so the mass is soft and sticky, or spongy. Mix in a heaping tablespoon of lard. Add a teaspoon of allspice. Put the mixture in a cake tin and place in a slow oven. Stir constantly until a rich brown hue is attained, then smooth over with a knife or spoon and allow to bake slowly until a mellow brown crust is formed. Remove from oven, allow to cool slightly, cut in slices and serve. General Robert E. Lee would walk ten miles for a slice of it.

that first morning to begin heading north and then east from the village of St. Bea’s, it was almost exactly three years to the day since my father had died. Every mile forward for the next two weeks, Dad was always on my mind. On those stretches when I was alone, I sometimes talked out loud, thanking him. It was he, after all, who had nurtured such a love of land and such a passion for the natural world in my siblings and me. It was he who had hiked most sections of the Appalachian Trail, who had taken my brother and other Boy Scouts on trips to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, who had taught so many young people to pitch a tent, cook a meal among stones and embers, and hang provisions from high tree branches so bears didn’t feast on

DID YOU KNOW that the Lighthouse is 104 feet high? It was originally built by 1810 by James Gould, but was destroyed in the Civil War and later rebuilt. The light from its Fresnel lens comes from one single 1,000 watt bulb and can be seen far as 23 miles out to sea. Climb to the top and count the stairs as you go. How many are there? Take a picture from the top.” Down below, on the Lighthouse lawn, there’s a ship’s anchor. Can you find it?

DO YOU SEE any shrimp boats? You can recognize them by their nets. This area was once called the Shrimp Capital of the World. The Wild Georgia shrimp that the boats haul in their nets are known to be sweet and yummy because our water here is nutrient rich. If you have never tried them, the fried shrimp at Iguana’s is a delicious example. Mmmmmmm good! If you want to see a shrimp boat in action, go to the docks on Bay Street in Brunswick and see the boats unload these scrumptious beauties.

THERE IS A GIANT MERMAID IN THE VILLAGE. An artist named Keith Jennings and his son carved it. Keith is also the man behind several other island “spirits.” Find the mermaid and take a selfie with her. Don’t forget to send it to us.

KEITH JENNINGS WAS ALSO THE CREATOR of another well-known piece of art in the Village. This one is to honor the right whales that give birth to their young in the waters off of St. Simons. Did you know baby whales are called calves, like baby cows?! This is also a great spot for family photos.

HAVE YOU SEEN ANY GOLFERS YET? We think some of the golf outfits are funny. Checkered pants make us smile. We have a bunch of golf courses on the island. And a lot of golf pros. Chances are you’ll see them on TV if you (or your parents) watch golf.

SPEAKING OF GOLF, play a game of miniature golf at the Neptune Park Fun Zone. Afterwards, stop by Zuzu’s for an ice cream cone! Send us a selfie with your favorite flavor. While you’re in the Village, see if you can find this painted mural of the pier on the patio at one of our favorite breakfast spots. (Mom & Dad might enjoy a Bloody Mary here.)

CAN YOU FIND THIS? Take a selfie here. Hint: You have to head to the north end of the island. It’s a barn with no horses, but we hear you can find raccoons there.

ONCE UPON A TIME, there was moat on the island, but no dragon guarding it. Fort Frederica National Monument is where the fort and town of Frederica were located in colonial days. A dry moat ran outside a wall that surrounded the town, with wooden ramparts on the other side. You can see the remains of the wall and moat if you look closely. The fort was well fortified with cannons to shoot across the marsh. Dress like a colonial soldier or fort resident with props from the museum and take a selfie. 66

HAVE YOU MET THE MAYOR at the St. Simons Pier? You can look but don’t get too close. He’s happy to pose for pictures though. Just don’t interrupt his lunch! This well-known pelican keeps an eye on everything and everyone at the Pier. Pelicans are fun to watch. If you’re lucky you might see one dive bomb into the ocean to scoop up some fish.

PLAN ON A GAME OF CORNHOLE and check out the smokers at Southern Soul Barbeque. Just don’t touch—they are HOT! Say hi to Mr. Harrison, the pitmaster (that is what you call someone who is a barbeque chef). He makes 6,000 sticky, sweet and wonderful ribs per week! Grab an orange Nehi to go with a knuckle sammich or corn dawg. This old school soda-pop has been around for almost 100 years! Send us a picture of you and your lunch.

THE MAYOR ISN’T THE ONLY BOSSY BIRD in the Village. Stop by St. Simons Bait & Tackle to meet Mr. Byrd. He might even let you take a selfie with him.

CAN YOU FIND THIS? Hint: There’s no gambling here, but it’s a great spot to take a break or grab a book and relax.

LOOKING OUT FROM THE ROCKING CHAIRS TO THE OCEAN, you’ll see a big tree that sometimes gets confused with our Live Oaks. This cedar tree is more than 100 years old and is a favorite for kids to climb. The hollows and bumps in the trunk look like faces and make a good hiding place for lizards and other creatures.

THERE IS A BUTTERFLY GARDEN on Demere Road. The nice ladies from the Live Oaks Garden Club take care of it. Go check it out and count how many butterflies you see. It is beautiful spot for a family photo.

STOP IN to Sal’s Neighborhood Pizzeria for a Neapolitan pie and check out the pictures on the wall of the boxing past of our local “Rocky.” See if you can find out why he’s in the Guinness Book of World Records. (It’s okay to Google it!) If you’re really lucky and Sal is there, he might even sing “That’s Amore” for you.

YOU CAN FIND A SCALE MODEL of a Liberty Ship in Mary Ross Waterfront Park in downtown Brunswick, not far from where they were built and launched. It’s a little smaller than the actual 447-foot steel ships that weighed 3500 tons.

WHILE YOU’RE IN DOWNTOWN BRUNSWICK, look around for some really cool murals. A few of our favorites: the angel wing wall, the “Love” and “Hope” wall, and the “Welcome to Brunswick” mural. Take a selfie at one of these and send it to us.

Strengthening the Community with

I

n the best of times, it’s important that rural communities have access to health care. In the worst of times – one could argue that describes the COVID-19 outbreak – it’s especially critical. But coronavirus isn’t just a threat to public health, it also impacts infrastructure. That includes the rural hospitals that communities count on for life-saving care. “Rural hospitals throughout Georgia, including our Camden Campus, are experiencing significant decreases in revenue due to coronavirus,” says Michael D. Scherneck, president and CEO, Southeast Georgia Health System. “To protect our community and to ensure the

76

HEART

availability of critical resources for coronavirus patients, we temporarily postponed elective surgeries and procedures. Our physician offices also postponed procedures and did not see as many patients. We’re doing our part to slow the spread of coronavirus, but it is not without financial consequences.” Right now, the Camden Campus needs the community’s support more than ever and there is a simple way for that support to be provided. “There is an easy way our community can help,” says Scherneck. “The Rural Hospital Tax Credit Program allows Georgia state taxpayers to give back to rural hospitals that have given so much to their communities before and dur-

ing this crisis.” Through the Rural Hospital Tax Credit Program, Georgia taxpayers can redirect their 2020 state income taxes to improve health care in their communities, thereby ensuring family and friends have access to quality care close to home. The Georgia General Assembly enacted the Georgia HEART (Helping Enhance Access to Rural Treatment) hospital tax credit program to help rural hospitals struggling to stay open, but hospitals aren’t the only entities that benefit. The program offers a 100% state income tax credit to Georgia taxpayers and C-Corporations that donate funds through the program to hospitals that qualify, and for the second year

in a row, the Health System’s Camden Campus qualifies for this innovative program. By redirecting what you would have paid toward state income tax to the HEART program, you help rural hospitals, such as the Camden Campus, add new services, purchase technology, recruit physicians and offer additional health programs and screenings. In 2019, the Health System used its HEART funds to add 3D Mammography to the Camden Campus radiology department. This innovative technology is the most effective screening method for breast cancer, and early detection can increase the chances of patient survival. The Health System committed its 2020 HEART funds to build a new Wound Care Center on the Camden Cam-

pus. That project is now complete but the opening has been delayed until early summer because of the pandemic. A more immediate priority for the HEART funds, however, is to help provide for the personnel and other resources that have been required to support the Health System’s COVID-19 pandemic response efforts. “The beauty of the HEART program is that it allows taxpayers to keep their state tax dollars close to home, where it benefits family, friends and themselves,” Scherneck says. “It also allows hospitals to direct the donations to areas of greatest need. Funds directed toward the Camden Campus benefit the Health System as a whole, which in turn benefits everyone in the six counties we serve.”

Scherneck adds, “Rural hospitals like the Camden Campus fill a vital need. The tax credit program is an excellent way to improve access to medical care and the quality of that care, without impacting household finances. It’s an easy way to feel better about paying taxes, knowing that your dollars helped improve health care in your own community. In a time when many people feel powerless, this program empowers them to strengthen their community. It truly is a win-win for everyone.” The process to participate in this program is easy and takes less than five minutes. Simply complete a brief application, found at sghs.org/ ga-tax-credit or at georgiaheart.org. Every tax dollar reallocated through HEART makes our Health System and our community stronger.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

It all began with boys and a beach house for Diane Bailey.

T

he matriarch of the Bailey family is wellknown here on St. Simons Island. This island is part of her blood and she’s proud to have raised her boys to adulthood here and to watch her grandchildren play on the same beaches and under the Live oaks that still tower above. She’s also proud of the business she built here with The Bailey Boys and the new chapter she’s starting with Diane Bailey Designs at the Beach House. It’s the beach house that her daddy built on St. Simons in 1980 that inspired Diane’s dreams and her designs. With pecky cypress throughout the interior, the beach house is pure Southern charm and over the years has been filled with cozy classic pieces that have been the backdrop for so many family memories. Today, it represents how the island used to be – peaceful, calm, warm and inviting. When you walk through the door, life slows down. Diane started The Bailey Boys in 1987 after her youngest son started kindergarten. She recalls, “After lunching and shopping with friends for a while, I decided I needed to do something more productive and creative with my time. My husband, Jim, unbeknownst to me, bought several industrial sewing machines and the equipment to go with it to start a small business.” Diane explains that family legend has it

that she was threading a needle from the time she was three years-old. “I guess he figured that since I’d been sewing all my life, that was the business I should pursue.” And pursue she did! She still recalls that first trip to market in Atlanta to find a sales representative. What an eye-opening experience! Diane says, “The market was so big and impressive! It seemed so out of my league.” But she did find a rep, Nancy, who encouraged her to create boys’ clothing to fill a niche in the marketplace that was underserved. And thus, The Bailey Boys was born. Diane had already been making clothes for her boys, and knew that was

what she did best, so she went to work right away on designs. Her first foray in the fashion world with a reversible john john (a design she’d been making since her firstborn was a year old) met with resounding success. “I had a great response and was overwhelmed by the orders. Since it was only my mother, another lady and me doing all the cutting, sewing, pattern grading, etc., we had our hands full!” And that was just the beginning! The business progressively grew a little each year. The next BIG step came in the fall of 1996, when Diane’s husband Jim went to Baxley to buy some sewing (continues)

machines from a plant that was downsizing. He returned with an idea to buy the factory since it was already set up and running. “At that time,” Diane explains, “we were having a hard time getting people to sew for us – many of the sewing factories had gone overseas and there just weren’t many sewing machine operators around our area.” So the idea did have some merit to it. They purchased the building and the Bailey Boys moved its sewing operations there in early 1997. Diane says, “I still marvel at how the fabric comes in on the loading dock at the back door, moves clockwise around the factory and goes out the back door the same way it came in as finished garments!” What she only recently discovered, by speaking to a long term rep for the company at market in Atlanta, was that when he used to come in, look around and say, “I don’t know how you do it! NOBODY else does this!” he 80

truly meant NOBODY! When she asked him to explain, he said, “You don’t get it, do you? I travel all over the country. No one takes a design from pattern and fabric all the way to completed garment in one place! No one! Not just here in the area. Anywhere in the United States!” What an accomplishment! When Diane started the business, she was designing, selecting fabrics, and overseeing the actual construction of the garments. More people, including her sons, stepped in to help. The warehouse on St. Simons Island turned into a company store where they carry and sell the five design lines they developed over the years. Diane’s little sewing endeavor turned into a national brand of children’s clothing known for its Southern classic and traditional feel and is carried in specialty stores throughout the country. A few years back, she was able to retire,

leaving the business to flourish and continue in the capable hands of family. When asked what she did when she got to indulge the luxury of retirement, Diane says, “I started baking. Soon I was giving poundcakes away to everyone I knew. I just couldn’t NOT do anything. But if I kept up the baking, that was going to be bad for our waistlines! So, after about two weeks, I decided to pursue a passion I’d always had: expanding my love of design into women’s clothing. People had been telling me for 30 years to do adult clothes! I launched Diane Bailey Designs at The Beach House with a line of ladies’ classic blouses.” Once again, Diane looked around and found a niche. She started with a classic, traditional white blouse, because that’s one of her favorite things. She says, “Every classy (continues)

woman needs a classy white blouse.” Since women always complimented Diane on the blouses she wore, she created her designs based on the features she looked for in a blouse: a length that’s long enough to complement the figure, 3/4 sleeves for comfortable arm coverage, an attractive collar, and, pockets, of course – because you always need pockets to hold things!” Comfortable and complementary fit and quality fabric are essential and Diane ensures the best of both in the blouses she designs. But she couldn’t just stop at white! “With my love of classic, traditional checks and stripes, I’ve incorporated these patterns into

my blouses for continued interest and inspiration from the island.” Another niche she is filling with the blouses she has designed was more unexpected. She started carrying a certain number of Small, Medium, and Large sizes, but many women asked for Extra Small or Extra Large sizes. She started carrying those to accommodate, and now sells more of those sizes that the standard S-M-L. Diane takes pride in that, knowing that she is filling a need for women who can’t just go buy off-the-rack, and helping them to feel beautiful in quality clothing. Diane also sells some other

items from other vendors that she’s picked up at market that she thinks island women might like, including cute dresses, and accessories like purses and the very popular goodr brand noslip sunglasses. Diane calls to mind the feeling of visiting a beach house for the designs she creates: timeless traditions and wonderful memories that last forever and return every time you step foot in the door. Her blouses are timeless and everlasting in the same way. She explains, “A Perfect White Blouse is our staple, but Diane Bailey Designs has created so many styles and colors to choose from. We just know wearing these versatile, comfortable, and durable blouses will take you back to your own ‘Beach House days.’ We believe the Beach House isn’t just a place, it’s a feeling – a way of life – and her signature blouse is not just another blouse, it’s a PERFECT White Blouse. But we want you to choose whatever color, pattern, and style that fits YOU best. Come shop with us!” Diane is happy to help you find your perfect look. Imber has the Trifecta!

It’s time to get your summer body back! Imber Medical has three amazing ways to help you sculpt your body.

BEAUTIFILL Take fat from areas where you don’t want it and put it in that areas you do.

H

ow it works: Beautifill is an in-office procedure that uses safe, effective laser energy to loosen fat from

the problem area of your choice. A gentle liposuction simultaneously harvests the fat with less bruising and swelling than other methods so you can get back to your daily routine. Beautifill is revolutionary because with this procedure more than 90% fat cell viability can be achieved (versus all other fat transfer methods). In other words, the fat that is transferred to the face, buttocks or breast stays where you put it. You can transfer as much as you need and, unlike filler, it last for years! Yet another key factor that separates Beautifill is the skin tightening made possible by the laser. This laser is so precise it can sculpt abdominal muscles! (continues)

The Doctor Is Always In

I

f you’re looking for true concierge healthcare services available 24/7 in the convenience of your home or your island home away from home, you can turn to Dr. Mike Erwin of Seaworthy Health. EIL recently chatted with Dr. Erwin to learn more about him and his practice. 88

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN ROBERTS, THE DARKROOM

Seaworthy Health is a locally owned healthcare practice offering immediate urgent and primary care services in the privacy of your home, office, or vacation home on St. Simons Island. They will come to you so there is no time wasted waiting in emergency rooms or physicians’ offices. Dr. Erwin and Nurse Practitioner Lauren Koncul are fully licensed and

insured and offer 24 hours a day, seven days a week availability. “Meeting you where you are, any time,” is their motto. Dr. Erwin completed his residency training in Anesthesiology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009. Following a very short detour in Spartanburg, SC, he and his wife,

Christy, serendipitously arrived on St. Simons Island with their new baby Elyse and Golden Retriever Abby. Thus began a career providing anesthesia in Southeast Georgia. He says, “We were lucky to find a rental house in Devonwood with the most wonderful, generous, and caring landlords and began making the friendships and island relationships that have become the foundation of Seaworthy Health.” He continues, “Fast forward 10 years, we’re a family of six now – still here in Devonwood. Elyse is now 11 and just graduated 5th grade. Our son Ben, who’s nine, is heading to 4th grade at Oglethorpe Point Elementary. And a new black lab puppy, Coco Bear, has just joined the family.” Community is at the heart of Dr. Erwin’s calling. Keeping that heart beating at optimal health is his mission. Seaworthy Health cares for patients of all ages; from infant to adult, and can help with a wide variety of healthcare issues. Dr. Erwin also offers healthcare for small businesses, because he understands they’re our lifeblood here and having healthy employees is essential. He says, “This summer, people will travel to St. Simons Island from all over the world. I know we’re ALL concerned about COVID-19 and the impacts on our community. We’re here to provide our local residents, tourists, and businesses with 24/7 access to help navigate whatever healthcare issue you may have, via house calls, telemedicine, or simple phone consultations.”

Medical services Dr. Erwin offers include minor wound repair and suturing, as well as treatment for minor burns – so don’t hesitate to call if an oyster bed gets the better of you, or there’s an accident in the kitchen. Seaworthy Health can provide treatment for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, including administration of IV fluids. Was it due to a rowdy night out? They even offer hangover therapy. Dr. Erwin knows how to deal with pain too, providing trigger point injections for acute pain, migraine headache treatments, and non-narcotic treatments for back and neck pain. Seaworthy Health can assist you with asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, and allergy issues, and administer tests for strep throat and flu. In addition, Seaworthy Health has partnered with Lab Corp to provide a full range of comprehensive laboratory services and testing including COVID-19 tests and COVID-19 antibody tests that can be done in the convenience of your home or office. From B12 shots to blood pressure management, they want to keep you in the best physical condition possible. Routine health exams, wellness checks, referrals, bloodwork, medication reviews, adjustments, and prescription refills are also services they’re happy to provide. Dr. Erwin’s patients aren’t shy about singing his praises. One recent review stated: “Excellent service to have on the island! As a mom of two toddlers, the time to run to urgent care for myself is pretty much non-existent. Dr. Erwin arrived at my house in 15 minutes and provided not only

treatment for my immediate concern (ear infection) but gave wonderful advice for long term allergy management in our pollen-filled spring and fall seasons.” Another patient said: “Top notch! My kids actually ENJOYED a doctor visit! Dr. Erwin was here within minutes after calling him. I really can’t think of anything better than excellent care, all in the comfort of our own home. Life changing for me and my family.” If you’re thinking all this personal attention and 24/7 availability must mean it’s expensive, Dr. Erwin is quick to point out that’s not the case. Compared to a standard ER visit, which costs about $1,200, the average cost of a Seaworthy Health visit is less than $200. They are unable to accept private insurance, Medicaid or Medicare, but their prices are competitive with most urgent care centers. If you’re worried about cost, Dr. Erwin can give you an estimate when you call.

Serving everything from southern comfort food to no boundaries international cuisine in a relaxed casual environment

We’re a sunny little joint that’s big on friendliness & fresh flavors.

In fact, that’s another thing that sets Seaworthy Health apart from other medical services: there’s no answering service or call center. When you call 912.506.6368, you’ll be speaking directly to Dr. Erwin. So, whether your medical needs are urgent or non-urgent, day or night, this doctor is in – and he’ll come to you wherever you are; just call.

Summer is Here!

Safeguard Your Vacation Home Investment by C h r i s Te m p l e t o n , M o r r i s & Te m p l e t o n I n s u ra n ce

S

ummer is finally here, which means vacationers will be here too. Now is the time to prepare and take the steps to reduce financial risk. Vacation rental property insurance will help safeguard your investment and give yourself peace of mind during the busy season on the Golden Isles. Owning a vacation rental property or a second home is a luxury; it’s an extension of the American dream and an aspiration for many families. With it, comes additional responsibilities: upkeep, liability concerns, and all of the “what ifs.” What if a renter gets injured on your property and sues you? What if a renter accidentally damages your property? What if your property is unoccupied when damage occurs? In all of these scenarios, the liability could fall on you, but a reliable insurance policy with Morris & Templeton Insurance will allow you to rest easy when guests come to town. Renting out your vacation home is much like running a business. Many say it’s risky business, but it doesn’t have to be. If you rent out your property as a short term rental in exchange for money, it is considered business activity (regardless of how much you earn) and is most likely not covered by your homeowners insurance policy.

So what kind of policy should you get? There are a lot of factors to consider. Do you rent out your vacation home every once in a while? If so, you might be able to get an endorsement on your existing homeowners insurance policy. Simply put, that means you can get an addition made to your current policy to change certain terms or the scope of the policy. If you rent on a more regular basis, then you should consider a stand-alone commercial or business liability policy. This would cover several different incidents, such as: protection of the structure itself, personal liability if a guest gets injured, the contents inside your home (in the event of damage, theft, or a fire), and lost income (if your property sustains significant damage to where you cannot rent it out for a period of time). Whether you rent occasionally or on a regular basis, the cost of your homeowners insurance will likely increase, as you are increasing the amount of coverage you have. The cost depends on several factors. They consider your deduct-

ible amount, the replacement cost of your home, location, amenities, and, of course, the amount of coverage you want. Generally speaking, vacation rental insurance policies are slightly more

expensive than primary homeowners insurance policies. Why is this? Mostly because your home is vacant more frequently and the likelihood of filing a claim is much higher. As the Insurance Information Institute says, “renting your second home entails additional, more complex risks, it’s a good idea to consult with your insurance professional.” If you own a second home and plan to rent it out this summer, give Morris and Templeton Insurance a call and they will handle all of those complex risks. You can reach an agent at 912.355.4549 or visit their website at morristempleton.com.

A Casino for All Ages

S

ummertime has always brought residents and visitors to the Pier Village area on St. Simons Island. Since 1928, a community center known as the Casino has provided a venue for social activities, such as dancing and bowling. In the early 20th century, casinos were sometimes built for general recreation rather than gambling. The island’s first casino, a wooden pavilion built out over the water, burned to the ground in 1935. Within two years, it was replaced by the brick building we see today, using $30,000 in insurance proceeds and additional funding from President Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA) program.

In Stephen Doster’s book Voices from St. Simons, island native Sonja Olsen Kinard recalls the summertime attractions of the Casino, “We didn’t have air conditioning. In the summer, we’d go down to the old Casino by the pier to play, visit, and stay cool. On one side was the bowling alley with a soda fountain and a jukebox. … On the other side was the movie theater. In the middle was a sunken area … that area had a good floor for dancing. People danced and danced until the Casino closed for the evening. During the war [World War II], the soldiers thoroughly enjoyed dancing with the young

girls. The jitterbug was the popular dance then.” From its earliest days, the Casino housed a public library, sponsored by Cassina Garden Club, which by the end of the war provided

over 3,000 books for summertime reading. The library expanded into the vacated bowling alley space in 1950. The movie theater became the home of the Island Players in 1963, when they moved from a playhouse at the St. Simons Airport.

This month’s image from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives shows the entrance to the Casino and dates from around 1960. Originally, the building was painted white and stood as a horizontal companion to the St. Simons Lighthouse.

Coastal Georgia Historical Society presents this article and images from our archives as part of our mission to tell Coastal Georgia’s inspiring stories. The Society operates the iconic St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and the World War II Home Front Museum, housed in the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach.
