Learning to play Bridge can feel like solving a puzzle while blindfolded, with your hands tied, and someone constantly whispering that you’re doing it wrong. You start out thinking, “How hard can it be? It’s just cards!”—only to be thrown into a world of bidding, trump suits, and cryptic codes that your partner insists you should understand. By the time you finally get the hang of it, your brain is doing mental gymnastics, and the only thing you’ve truly mastered is how to look perpetually puzzled.
Fortunately, I can turn to my Grand Life Master, Joyce Witherington, for guidance. “Big Joyce,” as she is affectionately known, has just celebrated her 100th birthday! She is an inspiration to everyone she meets! Read more about her and her bridge exploits in this month’s “All Fun & Games” feature.
If Bridge isn’t your game, don’t worry, I’ve got plenty of suggestions for other fun activities you might enjoy. Finding group activities that please everyone can be tricky, but we’ve compiled a list of top choices to ensure your next gathering is anything but dull.
EIL has a fantastic lineup of activities to kick off the fall season in style. Inside you’ll find these activities and more ideas that we sourced for YOUR Fun & Games.
So, turn off the electronics, step away from the couch, and embrace the beauty of Fall. After all, if Big Joyce can still play Bridge at 100 years old, there’s nothing holding you back!

ALL FUN & GAMES
It’s here! Football season has arr I ved! The local high schools have kicked off their seasons and our beloved Georgia Bulldawgs will face off against the Clemson Tigers for their first game on Labor Day Weekend. While we are enthusiastic fans of play on the gridiron, this month’s feature is a reminder that there’s even more fall fun out there. There are outdoor adventures, indoor activities that move your body, exercises that stimulate your mind, and amusements that entertain.
Well, we certainly can’t ignore football whatsoever when we’re talking about Fun & Games in the Golden Isles, so let’s hit some highlights!
For those who may not know, our local varsity football teams are the Glynn Academy Red Terrors, Brunswick High Pirates, and Frederica Academy Knights. Their seasons are already underway, but the game to watch in September is the always exciting “City Championship” cross-town rivalry match-up between Glynn Academy and Brunswick High in Glynn County Stadium. Last year’s game was a real nail-biter, with the Terrors coming from behind to snatch a 22-15 victory over the Pirates in overtime. So plan to be at the stadium on Friday, September 27 for the 7:30 p.m. kick-off to see who will earn bragging rights this year.
You can find schedules and links to broadcasts and other information for the teams at the following sites:

Brunswick High School: BrunswickPirates.com

When it comes to Bulldawg football, everything you need to follow UGA can be found at georgiadogs.com/sports/football. The game that most directly affects the Golden Isles doesn’t come until November 2, when the Dawgs take on the Gators and St. Simons Island becomes Athens-by-the-Sea as we welcome UGA students and others making the annual trek to Jacksonville to watch the big game. However, all eyes will be on Coach Kirby Smart and those boys in red and black on September 28 for the showdown against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. The Dawgs are going to be looking for retribution after last year’s heartbreaking 27-24 loss to Bama in the SEC Championship game! The game airs at 7:30 p.m., so plan your local tailgate/ watch parties now! If you need a tasty spread but don’t want the bother of cooking, check out the offerings from our friends over at Burnside’s & Co. at burnsidesandco.com. They can put together a Day spread to fit your your appetite, ranging charcuterie trays, slider sandwich platters, wings, other appetizers to mouthwatering BBQ, Low Country Boil, and more. Give them a call so you can relax enjoy the game!
Fall is a popular time to take to the water in the Golden Isles as the temperatures cool off and wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities are plentiful. In honor of Southeast Adventure Outfitters’ 30th anniversary, we’re going to shine the spotlight on them for a moment and share some thoughts from Owner Michael Gowen.
It's been quite an adventure! For the last 30 years SouthEast Adventure (SEA) has shared the beautiful waterways of the Golden Isles with thousands of residents and visitors. Michael says, “It took a lot of support from our community to make it from our humble beginnings, a trailer with 8 kayaks in the driveway, to a couple of shops and a lot of kayaks!” He recalls their very first trip: “We had to make a last-minute drive to the port of Baltimore to pick up kayaks in a snowstorm and received our paddles and camping gear just in time to meet the Forest People outdoor club from Alfred University of upstate New York for a week descending the Altamaha River.” Since then, it’s been non-stop!
After a year of tours, SEA opened their flagship store in the pier village on St. Simons Island with outdoor gear including tents, stoves, backpacks, and a huge selection of maps (pre-internet!). They supplied many kids with bookbags every year before school went back in and rode the popularity of North Face fleece jackets among other trends (Crocs anyone?!). With the opening of their Brunswick shop and the increasing popularity of kayaking as a sport and recreational activity, they introduced hundreds of folks to the fun of kayak ownership, something they’re still doing to this day, with customer reviews like this one:
Thank you so much for your help selecting a kayak yesterday. I went out for a paddle this morning off the beach; it was so peaceful and beautiful. I explored several of the sand bars and found lots of amazing invertebrates as the black skimmers and least terns flew overhead. I am so happy that I finally own a kayak, I don't know why I waited this long! Thanks again! SARAH
As the internet changed shopping patterns and the kayak industry matured, the '08 recession, storms, and more recently, the pandemic, threw everyone for loops. Through it all there have been lots of adjustments, and Michael and the SEA team are proud to have persevered. Their Brunswick shop dock has been the site of some of their most rewarding activities, introducing hundreds of kids from various organizations to the fun of kayaking and the

beauty of our marshes, particularly the Special Olympics and many trips with the Boys and Girls Club.
Kayak tours with friendly and knowledgeable guides departing from Village Creek Landing and various other locations plus special trips up and down the rivers and through the marshes and swamps have attracted clients of all ages from near and far. Once again, client testimonials speak for themselves, and there are dozens and dozens from over the years on various platforms.
Wow, thanks for the photos!! We had a great time and enjoyed the tour. Seeing everything from the water gave us a new perspective for the area.
LISA AND PAUL
Super experience marsh kayaking! Took the 3-hour outgoing-tide kayak tour with guides Lee, Mike, and Drew. Very informative, relaxing, and fun. The rudder sea kayaks were easy to maneuver, and the guides took great care of everyone. Were fortunate enough to hang out with feeding dolphins for awhile, hear and see lots of birds, and stretch our legs on the beach. Would definitely recommend!! MAMAM
Kayaks aren’t the only way that SEA helps people explore and experience our local waterways, they do boat tours too! The special touch of providing photos from the excursions is something that SEA’s clients particularly love.
Great afternoon on the water! A group of us took the 3-hour boat tour with Michael. It was awesome! He is super friendly and informative. We not only got to see the beauty of the coastal waterway but learned a lot about the history of this area. The boat has a canopy to provide a break from the sun and guests are allowed to bring snacks and refreshments. Not only did we get to see wildlife, amazing variety of birds and dolphins, but didn't have to worry about capturing it with your camera. Michael takes professional photos and emails them to you! Great experience! SMITTYMOM
Michael and the SEA crew say they would have never met and made so many amazing friends and customers if it hadn't been for SouthEast Adventure. They've been blessed with great friends, family, and an amazing group of guides and coworkers. Thanks to everyone who’s shared the adventures with SEA! As Robby would put it, “Durn! It’s hard to believe it's been 30 years!” Visit their website at southeastadventure.com to book your own tour or do some shopping.

Another St. Simons Island Pier Village institution when it comes to getting folks out fishing is St. Simons Bait & Tackle. This family-owned bait and tackle shop is a small business that has been providing high-quality fishing equipment and a carefully curated selection of bait to customers for 20 years. Many visitors also know them as the home of entertaining “shop bird,” Mr. Byrd. Now located at 202 Mallery Street and open from 7:00 a.m. daily, the shop is run by a family of avid fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts who are passionate about helping others enjoy their time on the water. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just getting started, they have everything you need to enjoy a successful day of fishing. They also rent rods and reels and have started offering fun and educational instruction sessions for kids on things like crabbing, seine netting, and sea turtles.
They are currently wrapping up their inaugural summerlong Youth Angler Extravaganza, which ran from March 1st through September 2nd, so you’ll want to check out their Facebook and Instagram pages (@ssibaitshop) to see who takes home top honors for what they landed in categories that include whiting, trout, flounder, sheepshead, black drum, red fish, Southern stingray, and blue crab. Their website at ssibaitandtackle.com is an excellent resource for daily tide tables, a link to the Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Division to obtain fishing licenses and permits, and also hosts the SSI Sharkin page for our local shark fishermen. It’s a great spot to just stop in and chat to learn more about the fishing in the area if you’re down by pier.

brain games
Card games are a fabulous way to have fun with friends and exercise your brain. So, how about bridge? Does anyone even play that anymore? There have been rumors about its demise, perhaps because it seems like there aren’t many people younger than 60 playing. (It is true that the average age of bridge players in the U.S. is in the upper 60s.) Bridge is still a relatively popular game, however, even though its popularity has declined somewhat in recent decades. It remains one of the most widely played trick-taking card games globally, with active player communities and regular tournaments. However, the game has faced challenges in attracting younger generations, who have gravitated towards fasterpaced and more digital forms of entertainment. That said, bridge clubs, tournaments, and teaching programs continue to operate in many parts of the world, and dedicated players maintain the game's traditions. While bridge culture may not be as prevalent as it once was, it continues to have a dedicated following among those who appreciate its strategic complexity and social aspects.
According to a recent survey by the ACBL Education Foundation, about 15 million Americans age 45 and over know how to play bridge, and about 5 million of them play at least a few times a year. About 2 million of those play at least once a month. Among those who don’t know how to play, almost one out of five said they are interested in learning. That’s a whopping 11 million people!
You might also be surprised to hear there are more than a thousand active tournament bridge players under 20 in the US (and Canada and Mexico and Bermuda which is what the American Contract Bridge League covers) and usually around 250 play in the youth summer nationals (which rotate where it is). Nationals happen three times a year for all ages (with youth play taking place at one of them) and generally around 5,000 people from all over the world attend each.
We do know that duplicate bridge (a more challenging form of contract bridge) is alive and well on St. Simons Island with the Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Center. This ACBL-sanctioned member-run club located at 114 Skylane Court (behind Glynn Visual Arts) offers friendly and competitive bridge to players of all levels. Their Learn Bridge in a Day event held in February attracted more than 130 interested players. They were only expecting around 50! The Center offers Beginner’s Games on Thursday afternoons and lessons too. Regular games are held at the club every day but Saturday. An in-depth discussion of the game is beyond our capabilities (and space!) here, but take a deep dive into the Bridge Center’s website to find all you need to know: bridgewebs.com/goldenisles.
*Drinking From the Fountain o F Youth
Joyce Mattox credits the game of bridge, or more specifically, the Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Center on St. Simons Island, with saving her mother, Joyce (or “Big Joyce” to her grandchildren and friends) Witherington.
When the family moved Big Joyce here five years ago, she was despondent and struggling, and Joyce says that they were preparing themselves for the worst. That changed when a friend said she was taking her over to the Bridge Center. Now Big Joyce plays bridge every day except for holidays and hurricanes and she celebrated her 100th birthday last month. A celebration was held at the Bridge Center, where she had help cutting the cake from fellow Bridge Center members, 96-year-young Louise Grady and 99-year-young Eric Andreae. Joyce, the younger, told them that they have found the fountain of youth. The game has kept her mother’s mind sharp and her wit keen, and the social aspect revitalized her to a degree that was simply unimaginable five years ago. She calls it a true miracle.
On the occasion of Kathryne Joyce Tennille Withering turning “29 again for the 71st time,” the family has shared this gem, inspired by a familiar song about Maria from The Sound of Music.
How do you describe a person like Big Joyce?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Big Joyce?
A delightful daughter. A special sister. A loyal friend.
And an even better mother!
Many a thing you know you’d like to tell her
Many a thing she seems to already understand
But how do you make her stay? And listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon Saint Simon’s sand
Oh, how do you solve a problem like Big Joyce?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your “card” hand?
She’s a darling! She’s a Master Card Player…when she deals!
She’d out pester any pest…play cards with the best…
She’s Kinston’s Real Dill….
Drive a hornet from its nest…Solve the Jumble or call Monnie for the rest.
She could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl
She is gentle! She is wild! She’s a riddle! She’s a child!
She’s a headache! She’s an angel! She’s a Hand Full! still!
She is 100 and….she’s come so vary far.
She’s a miracle! She’s our “Young” friend and now has her own Mount Olive pickle jar!
Why would you even want to solve a problem like Big Joyce… she is our super star!?
brain games
Another brain stimulating game that’s seeing an upsurge in interest here is mahjong. Once marketed as an ancient Chinese game, but actually created in the mid- to late 1800s, mahjong was first brought to the American public in the early 1920s. The game is similar to gin rummy, as it consists of players competing to form distinct sets or pairs but uses tiles to make those sets or pairs. According to historian Annelise Heinz the game was popular among Chinese Americans because it offered them a way to connect with both cultures. It also became popular among Jewish American women after World War II. Young mothers, in particular, forged American mahjong culture during the 1950s and 1960s, with regular weekly mahjong games helping them to build female-focused networks where they could simply have fun together. While mahjong has remained popular in these communities, it is now attracting new fans. Perhaps thanks to popular shows and movies like Crazy Rich Asians and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
St. Simons Island has groups playing mahjong on Sea Island, at Frederica, and within or springing from social clubs like the Shorebirds and Island Newcomers Club. It’s also been played on Jekyll Island for years. It sparked some additional interest here on the island when Donna McPherson, the owner of Golden Isles Olive Oil, asked on social media whether someone could teach her how to play. So many people commented that they would also be interested in learning, she decided to have a group meet at Golden Isles Olive Oil.
What they discovered was that the overwhelming interest exceed the ability to teach. Approximately two dozen people arrived to play, but most had never played. Mahjong is similar to rummy and is typically played in groups of four. So with only two people with enough knowledge to teach it and only a couple boards available, they decided to hold off on future meetings until they figure out the best way to proceed. Mahjong is complicated game if no one is teaching you how to play. It’s very hard to figure out by just sitting around watching others play. Today, most people in the U.S. play American mahjong, which has slightly different rules than traditional Chinese mahjong. In American mahjong, you pick up and discard decorated tiles (which are based on Chinese characters and symbols) until you arrange 14 tiles into one of the approved pattern options. The
patterns are designated in a rules card put out annually by the National Mah Jongg League and the card changes every year.
Mahjong’s appeal is that it is a wonderfully social game that is both challenging and aesthetically pleasing. You can enjoy a glass of wine and snacks with friends while playing, but your brain still has to remain active to play well. So, keep an eye out for a possible mahjong group at Golden Isles Olive Oil by following their Facebook and Instagram pages.
In the meantime, if you want more games to challenge your brain, there’s weekly Music Bingo at Golden Isles Olive Oil, as well as some other spots around town. For weekly Canasta and Hand & Foot games, you can head over to Ziggy’s on St. Simons Island. Of course, you’ll find pool tables there as well if you fancy a game involving that kind of dexterity and skill. Regular and music trivia is also popular at numerous locations and with several different hosts. Find what you like and grab some friends to go play! For game nights at home and puzzles for rainy days, we recommend a stop at St. Simons Drug Co. They have the BEST selection of puzzles and games for all ages, including classic favorites and popular party hits.

“ A puzzle chAllenges the pl Ayer to get from A problem to A solution, but of course, the pAth isn’t simple.”
When puzzles and adventure combine, they’re captivating the imaginations of millions, and create one of today’s most popular forms of entertainment: the escape room.
The immersive experience of the escape room has taken the world by storm, offering thrilling challenges for people of all ages. What started as a niche form of entertainment that began in Japan around 2007 has now grown into a global phenomenon, with escape rooms popping up in cities all over the world. In 2023, there were more than 3,000 escape rooms operating in the US, and approximately 50,000 worldwide!
What is an escape room? It’s basically a real-life adventure game where participants are locked in a room and need to solve a series of puzzles and challenges within a given time limit to escape. Rooms are often themed and involve scenarios like finding treasure in a pirate’s lair, solving a murder mystery, or fleeing a zombie apocalypse. Players work together as a team to solve riddles, decode clues, and discover hidden objects to progress through the game and ultimately escape the room.
Because escape rooms require active participation and critical thinking, they provide a unique and interactive experience that traditional games or movies do not. The immersive nature of the game creates an adrenaline-pumping experience that keeps participants engaged and fully invested in the outcome. Players must also actively pool their problem-solving skills and creative talents working as a team to unravel each challenge as they move forward, so full participation is key.
In this world where we all seem to be constantly connected to our screens, escape rooms provide a refreshing and much-needed break from technology and a chance to connect with others in a meaningful way. The collaborative nature of the experience requires face-to-face interaction and teamwork, so it’s a perfect activity to encourage social interaction between friends, family, or colleagues.
Escape rooms also appeal to a wide range of individuals from puzzle enthusiasts to adventure seekers. A wide variety of themes and rooms with different levels of difficulty mean that there are rooms that appeal to people from all walks of life, with suitable options available for beginners and challenges for more experienced players.
Overcoming challenges, cracking codes, and solving puzzles creates a sense of achievement. When you combine this with the adrenaline rush that comes
sweet escape
with a ticking time clock, players leave feeling accomplished and are eager to tackle new escape room challenges.
No longer a niche form of entertainment or fad, it looks like escape rooms are here to stay. That’s great news for Carl Shields, who recently opened Breakout Adventures on St. Simons Island. When asked why he chose to create the escape room experience, Shields says: “One word encapsulates my motivation for opening an Escape Room on St. Simons Island: connection. After years of managing chemical plants, I realized that the corporate culture had left me longing for something more meaningful. I discovered the power of connection through an unforgettable experience with my family while solving a murder mystery, escaping Alcatraz, and breaking up a Speakeasy mobster operation. The shared experience of working together, without the distraction of smartphones, allowed us to bond in a way that we hadn’t in years. We made memories that will last a lifetime, and I knew then that I wanted to bring this same experience to others.”
Breakout Adventure was born from that desire to create connection. Shields says, “Our focus is on providing a movie set environment where friends, families, coworkers, and even strangers can come together to solve puzzles and unravel mysteries. The sense of accomplishment and camaraderie that comes from working together is invaluable, and we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience it.”
The King’s Roar at Breakout Adventures is a fully generation 2 electronic room with lights and sound that give it a movie atmosphere. Blackbeard's Trap also has the movie-style lights and sounds yet maintains traditional lock and key elements that belong in a pirate escape room.
“Our escape rooms are designed to be accessible to all, with no need for specialized knowledge in math or ancient cultures,” Shields explains. “All you need is a willingness to try, a bit of cleverness, and an awareness of your surroundings. And remember, you are never truly locked in; you can leave the room at any time.”
You need only look at Google reviews to see that visitors to Breakout
Adventure have loved their experiences there. The rooms and challenges presented have thrilled both seasoned escape room players and first-time adventurers. Whether you’re looking for a fun idea for a double date, a team bonding experience, or a family outing, come experience the power of connection and create memories that will last a lifetime. INDOOR FITNESS & FUN
Looking for more ways to move your body? Dance, yoga, tumbling, gymnastics, and martial arts programs for kids and adults are all available in the Golden Isles. EIL Publisher David Butler reached out to Ellen Otte, Owner & Director of Southern Strut Dance Center in Brunswick to find out more about her background, studio, and award-winning dance teams.
Ellen began dancing at Eleanor Brooks School of Dance at the age of 5, and began teaching for her at the age of 15. Ellen says, “Eleanor took me under her wing and made me the dancer and teacher I am today. I then went on to receive my formal training in NYC under many masters of dance, the main one being Joe Lanteri, who is now the owner and director of the prestigious New York City Dance Alliance.” She continues, “I became a certified member of Dance Masters of America, Dance Educators of America, Professional Dance Teacher Association and Dance Makers while living in Atlanta and running Marietta Academy of Dance before deciding to return home to St.Simons and the beautiful Golden Isles where I was born and raised.”
Upon her return, Ellen took over Eleanor Brooks School of Dance, and when Eleanor announced her retirement, Southern Strut Dance Center was born. In 2001, Ellen also established The Golden Isles Corps de Ballet, where each year over 160 students bring a new and exciting story to life, all told through the art form of Ballet to bring more of the arts to our community.
Southern Strut Dance Center competes on both a regional and national level. With four students winning National Titles this year alone. The studio caters not only to competition dancers, but also has a thriving recreational program. Ellen says, “The journey to any competition is paved with hard work, dedication, a desire for excellence and a passion and genuine love for what you do. Most
of our competitive dancers train multiple times a week along with attending conventions and workshops to further their education from teachers around the world. Ballet classes are required for all competitive dancers strengthening their foundation to make them the most versatile dancers they can be.”
Southern Strut Dance Center had over 130 entries at each competition this year, with more than half placing in the top 10 Overalls of their respected categories. They also took home the Highest Scoring Recreational Act of the entire competition, in both 11 & Under, and 12 & Over and the Highest Scoring Intermediated Act in 12 & Over, as well 6 choreography awards. Ellen says, “Beyond the outward success, the real reward is the memories, comradery and authentic encouragement and pride for one another that comes with competition weekends.”
She emphasizes that Southern Strut is more than just a dance studio, they are family. One that was built with multiple generations that supports, encourages and provides a safe space for every student to perform, discover and express their own artistic voice. A standout

highlight for the studio was winning the Sportsmanship Award, because one of their core values is kindness and lifting up others with integrity and overall encouragement. Ellen believes the role of teamwork and camaraderie is invaluable to any successful team. She says, “Just like any team sport, every teammate has a role they play on the team and something unique that they bring to the table and when that is unified the team values every player equally and continues to elevate the goal and potential set ahead of them.”
What drives Ellen and the Southern Strut staff? She says, “It all boils down to the love and passion for the art form that is Dance and getting the opportunity to create and grow that with and within our students.” She explains, “Challenges will always arise when you are striving for excellence. But we focus on getting our students to believe in themselves as much as our staff believes in them, and with that they will always persevere.” Ellen has these words of encouragement for dancers: “Work hard, strive for excellence, stay humble and remember the reason why you love to dance. Doing this with a heart posture of gratitude and knowing your motivation for why and who you dance for will keep the art of dance alive."
Southern Strut is gearing up for the 2024/2025 dance season with classes already underway. They are looking forward to the growth of what this season will bring as they continue to nurture the next generation of artists and leaders through the love of dance. The Write Stuff
Melinda Farris’ face lights up when she talks about the inaugural St. Simons Island Writers Retreat in November and her excitement is contagious.
Melinda heads up the fledgling St. Simons Island Writers group that has been steadily and quietly growing right here in our backyard. The group’s programs include writing seminars and workshops featuring authors of every genre, from poetry to scifi thriller to historical nonfiction. The group also arranges manuscript critique groups that meet monthly to support and encourage the writers’ progress.
Melinda Farris
Writing seminars and workshops with guest authors have been well-attended and the feedback has been fabulous. Melinda is eager to keep the energy flowing and to collaborate with other writers’ groups outside the area to provide more exposure and networking opportunities for our local writers.
Melinda’s own experience as a writer is what drives her.
Melinda graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. Following a career working on Capitol
Hill and abroad as a political operative and international democracy consultant, she turned her attention to creative writing, and in 2023 received her MFA in Creative Writing from Lesley University. Excerpts from Melinda’s own unpublished first novel, The Fourth Degree, have been described as The Da Vinci Code meets National Treasure and received awards from the Southeastern Writers Association, Writer's Digest, and The Seven Hills Literary Review. The Georgia Writers Museum selected her to present "How to Create Suspense" at their 2024 annual retreat. She joined Oglethorpe Lodge #1, Savannah Odd Fellows. Melinda has parlayed her experience and connections with others in the writing/publishing community into helping other writers navigate the process. Hence, the St. Simons Writers Retreat was born.
“Relax, recharge, and write!” This is the focus of the Writers Retreat presented by The Atlanta Writers Club, Georgia Writers Museum, and St. Simons Island Writers on Wednesday, November 6-Saturday,
November 9. Instead of overwhelming participants with activities, leaving no time for creative output, in an attempt to offer value, the AWC-GWM-SSIW retreat is designed to provide writers with ample networking and learning opportunities as well as long stretches of time they can use to further develop work-in-process, get inspired to start something new, or just rest and rediscover their muse while enjoying our beautiful island surroundings.
Featured Speakers
Wanda Lloyd, a retired newspaper editor, podcaster and frequent lecturer on issues of diversity and culture, is the author of Coming Full Circle: From Jim Crow to Journalism, a self-reflective exploration of the author’s life growing up in the legally segregated Deep South and becoming a trailblazing editor at seven daily newspapers. Her journey was marked by lack of mentors at a time when there were few women or people of color in the industry. Coming Full Circle was listed by bookauthority.org as one of the “25 Best Journalism Books to Read in 2020.” Kirkus Reviews called the memoir “Inspiring reading for aspiring journalists and students of civil rights.” Wanda has participated in several book festivals, including Greensboro Bound book festival in NC, the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, the Schomberg Center Literary Festival in NY, and the Authors Showcase for the National Association of Black Journalists. She has shared the story of writing this memoir virtually and in person on university campuses, museums, faith groups and with book clubs, corporate leadership teams and via podcasts.
Wanda and Tina McElroy Ansa co-edited Meeting at the Table: African-American Women Write on Race, Culture and Community, an
anthology of essays from diverse perspectives and co-hosted three seasons of the podcast, “2 Old Chicks Who Know a Lot of Sh*t!TM.” Wanda is also a TEDx speaker in Savannah. A self-described "word nerd," in 2022 she presented and performed on the topic "Words Matter." She has been honored nationally for career achievement, including being Inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame, the Ida B. Wells Award for Media Diversity, and she holds an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from her alma mater, Spelman College.
For the past six years, Wanda has been a member of The Focused Writers, an online group of women who learn new ways of writing and publishing. In 2022, this group published On Womanhood: Connecting and Thriving in Every Season, an anthology of essays, for which Wanda was a writer and she edited the book. This exercise was a learning experience -- from conception to writing, editing, publishing and marketing. Her keynote presentation at the Writers Retreat, “Journey to Memoir,” will address some of the most common questions asked about how to write memoirs and other nonfiction – how to tell your own stories. Wanda will lead a discussion on how she got started, how she organized personal information and papers, created dialogue from long-ago conversations and how she used personal relationships to get her book published and marketed.
Tina McElroy Ansa, Wanda’s fellow Spelman College alumnae and honorary Doctor of Arts, will present “Crafting Fiction: Real Talk…It’s a Process.” She will lead participants through the concrete steps to getting that novel started, crafted, and finished.
In addition to her exploits with Wanda, Tina is a teacher, editor, publisher, and the author of five award-winning novels, including
Baby of the Family, The Hand I Fan With, Ugly Ways, You Know Better and Taking After Mudear. All five of her novels are on the Georgia Center for the Book’s List of Books All Georgians Should Read. Baby of the Family and The Hand I Fan With both received the Georgia Authors Series Award, and Ugly Ways was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in Fiction. Tina founded the Sea Island Writers Retreat in 2004 and has taken the retreats on the road around the country. The most recent retreat was held in November of 2022 on Tybee Island, with Ansa, Crystal Wilkinson, Dolen Perkins-Valdez, Dawn Turner, Nic Stone, Wanda Lloyd (Class of ‘71), and Regina Taylor leading workshops. She founded independent publishing company DownSouth Press in 2007. As well as lecturing and reading around the country, Ansa has also contributed “Essays from Georgia” to CBS Sunday Morning.
Ansa has received the Bebe Moore Campbell Memorial Award from the National Book Club Conference. She has been awarded the Stanley W. Lindberg Award for her body of work and contributions to the literary arts community of Georgia. She was inducted into the International Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent at the Gwendolyn Brooks Center of Chicago State University. Tina is currently at work on her sixth novel and is writing her first work of nonfiction.
Celestial Holmes, known by the pseudonym Mbinguni, will present “The First-Time Author's Survival Guide: Lessons Learned.”
With a background in computer programming and 15 years of experience as an Instructional Designer, this multi-faceted professional has seamlessly transitioned into the realm of writing. Under the banner of NEW Reads Publications, Celestial’s debut novel, Looking for Hope, captivated readers worldwide. Her talent and dedication have been acknowledged through distinguished fellowships, including the 2022 Hurston Wright Screenwriting Fellowship, the 2023 and 2024 Kimbilio Fellowship, and the 2024 Community of Writers Workshop. Celestial is also a celebrated freelance writer and celebrity interviewer for BlackGirlNerds.com and a co-host on the immensely popular "Watch Dem Thrones" podcast, affiliated with the esteemed platform Black with No Chaser.

GIAR TAKES A BITE OUT OF HUNGER
Because 1 in 4 children in Glynn County struggle with hunger, the Golden Isles Association of REALTORS® 2024 Leadership Academy stepped up to make a difference. They collected donations, shopped for, and delivered 300 bags of food to two local Boys & Girls Clubs. The bags provided 12,600 meals to families in need. Each bag also included a Walmart gift card, for a total of over $18,000 in food donations. Way to go, everyone! FALL ART STROLL AND FIBER ARTS EXHIBIT
On September 12, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. visit the galleries participating in the St. Simons Art Stroll: Portman Gallery at Glynn Visual Arts, Anderson Fine Art Gallery, ArtTrends Gallery, Julep Gallery and Wallen Gallery. Glynn Visual Arts will be hosting a reception for “Together Again, for the First Time.” Accomplished artists, friends, and colleagues, K. Joy Ballard Peters, Janet Saboor, Tae Jackson, Gwendolyn Aqui-Brooks, Aisha Lumumba, and Sandra Teepen will showcase a variety of pieces from contemporary to traditional style in fiber arts. Their works range from appliqué to collage, sculpture, art quilts, and more. Much of the vibrant art provides a study in color and texture; some celebrates family, culture, and history; and others focus on social messaging, advancing art focused on African American imagery and life experiences. Please support our local art community by stopping by GVA and the other art galleries on the Stroll.

IT’S THE FALL OF GNOME
Friends, Gnomans, Countrymen…it’s time for Brunswick PorchFest 2024! If you’re not familiar with this fabulous event, Brunswick PorchFest is a musical celebration that highlights the diversity, uniqueness, and beauty of the Old Town community. Porches become stages…and strangers become friends. On Sunday, November 10 local and regional musicians and performers will provide entertainment on porches and other venues downtown, along with food trucks and other fun. The Brunswick PorchFest committee is accepting applications through October 15 for porch hosts and performers for this year’s Gnoman Empire themed musical extravaganza. Sponsors and volunteers are also needed to continue this community celebration. Get involved or just mark your calendars to come out from noon to 6:00 p.m. for a day of music and merriment, rain or shine. Follow Brunswick PorchFest on Facebook for more details and updates. For additional information about performing, hosting, volunteering, and sponsoring, and application forms, visit porchfestbwk.com.
TAKIN’ IT TO THE STREETS
BBQ on the Bluff benefiting the Firebox Initiative is moving to north Mallery Street in the Village on St. Simons Island this year. Final details are still in the works, but festivities will begin on Thursday, October 3, with the traditional chef’s dinner fundraiser at Southern Soul Barbeque.
Georgia native and Executive Chef of Husk Savannah, Chef Hathcock will be showing off his culinary chops this year. All proceeds benefit Firebox. Tickets generally go fast, so keep an eye out! In a departure from previous years, the big shindig on Saturday, October 5, will be a public, rather than ticketed event, although donations are appreciated. Barbeque stalls will feature the delicious creations of some of the country’s finest pitmasters and kitchens, and there will be libations, live music by Rollin’ in the Hay at Mallery Street Café, plus special surprises planned by Frosty’s Griddle & Shake and Del Sur. For more info as it becomes available, visit ssbbqfirebox.com.

Fun on Wheels
In the mid-twentieth century, several summer amusements were concentrated in one convenient location on the southern end of St. Simons Island. Built in 1950, Glynn County’s International Style Casino provided a variety of entertainment, including a bowling alley and a swimming pool, steps from the St. Simons Lighthouse. The new building was adjacent to another structure, which was also called the Casino when it was built in the late 1930s. This structure remains today and houses a library and theater. One of the new Casino’s main attractions was a roller-skating rink, which drew eager attendees from both the island and the mainland. Located on the upper floor of the casino, the rink kept its rules prominently posted. Skaters were to wear “proper dress” and avoid reckless skating or the use of profanity.
When the Casino first opened, its facilities were segregated. Although African American residents and visitors could not use the Casino’s roller rink, the Harrington neighborhood had its own nearby rink. The rink, owned by Eula and Evans Lee, served a dual purpose, also housing a game room for visitors.
Whether or not they patronized the local amenities, young residents of mid-century St. Simons often found that they could make their own summer fun. Fishing, crabbing, swimming, and team sports occupied many a child’s days. Resident Diane Haywood remembered making a game of counting cars near her home on Frederica Road—often, she said, spotting “maybe about twenty or thirty a day.”
Jonathan Lorenzo Williams was born on Sapelo Island but moved to St. Simons during his childhood. In Voices from St. Simons, oral histories collected and compiled by Stephen Doster, Williams recalled that the local roads provided hours of fun, whether you were counting cars or traveling the routes yourself. “Believe it or not, we had fun growing up on the island,” Williams remembered. “We would have roller-skate races from the East Beach Causeway bridge to Demere Road, and we’d skate all the way to Fort Frederica and back. The roller-skate wheels were
made of steel, and you carried spares in your pocket. So when you wore out a wheel, you stopped, put another one on, and kept going.”
This month’s featured images from the collections of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society include a view of the Glynn County Casino with the St. Simons Lighthouse in the background and a photograph of skaters on the second-floor rink. The Glynn County Casino was demolished in 2003 and was replaced by a new swimming pool and recreation area in 2009.
