And a Partridge in a Pear Tree
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW MUCH “THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS” WOULD COST IF YOU BOUGHT ALL THE GIFTS? BRACE YOURSELF: IT’S A HEFTY HOLIDAY BILL!
Start with the partridge in a pear tree. A partridge goes for around $20, but add a pear tree, and it’s about $200. Not a bad start—but things add up fast. On day two, two turtle doves come in at around $750. Day three’s three French hens seem like a bargain for only $330. Then come four calling birds, for another $600. You might want to start reconsidering those bird-heavy gifts right about now!
Day five: five golden rings. Of course, you’d want to consider personal taste in jewelry, but five plain solid gold bands would run about $1250-$1500. Then we’re right back to those high-priced birds: six geese a-laying would cost about $780, but their cousins the swans—WOW! Seven swans a-swimming would set you back around $13,000! Swans are apparently the Rolls Royce of Christmas gifts! Who knew?!
Next, we start hiring. At minimum wage, the eight maids a-milking are earning about $58/ day each, so they’re a steal for just less than $500. The nine ladies dancing far outprice the milking lasses and could cost over $8,000 if you want a proper performance. The ten lords a-leaping are even more pricey. The most expensive item on the list, booking skilled dancers or acrobats would likely cost more than $14,500! By eleven pipers piping and twelve drummers drumming, you’re into full musical parade mode! Think $3,000+ for pipers, and $3,000+ for drummers.
In total, buying all these gifts to represent each of the 12 days would cost over $46,000! If you repeated them, as the song does, for each day, it would be more than $200,000! And don’t forget the headache of housing 23 birds and wrangling performers and dancers. The moral of the story? Stick to the eggnog and skip the swans this Christmas!
From the EIL family to your family, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

This is how long the St. Simons Land Trust (SSLT) and its many supporters have partnered to protect the finest qualities of our beautiful island through conservation efforts such as preserving the tree canopy, protecting habitat, limiting rooftops and creating greenspace. They continuously strive to provide locals and visitors with places to hike, bike, go birding, and simply feel connected with nature.
Today, the Land Trust protects and properly manages nearly 1,400 ecologically, culturally, and historically significant acres across St. Simons – roughly 14% of the island’s uplands.
A few of the community’s favorite properties include the John Gilbert Nature Trail, the Old Stables Corner, and Cannon’s Point Preserve. Most recently, SSLT has added Correll Trail at Oatland on the north-end of the island, Gateway Property on the south-end, and 2404 Frederica Road along the Frederica Greenway to its list of 36 protected parcels.
None of this important work would have been possible if not for visionaries like Frances McCrary, Ben Slade, Jeanne Kaufmann, Jim Manning, and others who founded the Land Trust 25 years ago. And it certainly wouldn’t remain possible without the organization’s 1,000+ annual members, 20+ sponsors, and 40+ Pennies for Preservation partners.

The Land Trust’s only major fundraiser throughout the year is its Oyster Roast. Taking place on January 25, 2025, at Gascoigne Bluff Park on St. Simons Island, this homegrown, annual event is one the Golden Isles community looks forward to every year. And while local oysters are a main attraction, the event is about far more than eating. The Land Trust hosts its annual Oyster Roast fundraiser to gather the community together in the name of coastal conservation. The event brings awareness to the organization’s important work and helps raise money to preserve the natural and scenic character of St. Simons -- a cause that anyone who knows and loves the island can get behind.
The first SSLT Oyster Roast was held at Village Creek Landing in 2000 (the same year the organization was founded) with 70 guests in attendance. But 70 people was far more than had been expected. The oysters were soon gone and had to be supplemented with hotdogs and other quickly purchased food. As the event grew over the years, so did the venue (and the amount of food!) that was required. The Oyster Roast soon moved to Fort Frederica and included a lovely array of buffet items such as fried chicken and low country boil. Finally, after reaching ticket sales of more than 600, it relocated permanently to Gascoigne Bluff Park where more than 1,200+ tickets are sold and nearly 20 local restaurants provide delicious coastal cuisine for its attendees.
The person in charge of working with those nearly 20 restaurants for the 2025 Oyster Roast is St. Simons local Amy Debreceni. “Shortly after moving to St. Simons, I attended the first annual Oyster Roast. And I’ve been to almost every one since – as both a patron and a vendor. Because I’ve worked in the service industry here for almost 20 years, last year the Land Trust asked me to coordinate the restaurant side of the event – and I had a blast! Working to get so many of our outstanding local chefs together at beautiful Gascoigne Bluff was incredibly rewarding. I’m working now on the 25th Anniversary celebration in January and hope to have even more participating restaurants than in 2024. Can’t wait to see y’all there!”
The Land Trust’s staff is quick to say that they wouldn’t be able to host the event without the help of the 30+ other businesses and community leaders that support the organization. The top of that list includes Charlie Williams, owner of Crab Daddy’s Seafood Grill and Fiddlers, who for the last 20+ years has brought his own steamer to the event and works with his staff for hours to keep the steamed oysters coming all night long.
Also on that list are Steve and Sandy Schoettle, owners of Sea Island Forge, who provide multiple fire kettles to keep attendees warm. Together with other staff and volunteers, they also shovel up mounds of fireroasted oysters. The event would also not be the same without the help of Bob Thompson who not only spends the night on the grounds but donates his boilers to help Chef Dave Carrier cook hundreds of pounds of Low Country boil.
“It absolutely would not be possible without the many restaurants and businesses who give so generously,” says Emily Ellison, the Land Trust’s Executive Director. “These partners provide us with special menu items, with staff time, and with financial support. If we didn’t have this tremendous help and a happy band of dedicated, hard-working volunteers, there is no way we could pull off such an event.”
The Land Trust staff also knows the Oyster Roast would not be possible without its nearly 150 event volunteers. These dedicated supporters begin helping months before the event, lead efforts to set up the day of, assist with parking, check-in all 1,200+ attendees, serve food and drinks, ensure trash and recycling are handled properly, and break down the event afterwards. On January 25, they will be there once again in their red SSLT Volunteer Aprons. And with the growing number of guests and food booths at the event, their help will be needed more than ever.
In addition to oysters, there will be Low Country boil from Woodside along with local barbecue, soups and chowders, desserts, and more. At the 2024 event, offerings included creamy mushroom and shrimp risotto from Sal’s Neighborhood Pizzeria, Sapelo clam pizza from Schroeder’s Market, shrimp and grits from Wolf Island Oyster Co., country-fried chicken bites from Sea Island, and other specialty items from the chefs at Del Sur Artisan Eats, Dorothy’s Cocktail & Oyster Bar, Georgia Sea Grill Collective, Southern Soul Barbeque—so we can’t wait to see what there is this year!
While coastal cuisine and the magical ambience of the event are certainly among reasons to arrive on January 25, the live music will keep you there! In 2025, for the first time, the Oyster Roast will feature multiple musical talents including The Gowen Family Band, Michael Hulett, Elli Perry & Andrew Sovine, Owen Plant, and others.
Once you’ve eaten your weight in oysters, made rounds among the many restaurants, taken photos inside the Dahlia Photo Booth, and purchased some Land Trust swag, we hope you’ll leave with a renewed passion to continue investing in land preservation on St. Simons. You can do this by becoming an annual member of the Land Trust, training to volunteer or become a docent at Cannon’s Point Preserve, signing up to become an annual Sponsor or to join the many other local businesses who are Pennies for Preservation partners, or getting plugged into the organization’s Ambassador program.
For those of you who are already a part of the Land Trust’s family of supporters, we genuinely thank you. Your generosity means more than you’ll ever know and is making real impact on St. Simons. We look forward to celebrating our 25th Anniversary with you in January!

UP, UP and AUGUSTA AVIATION with
By Amelia Gay, Marketing & Communication, Augusta Aviation
THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS ALL ABOUT TRADITIONS, OLD AND NEW. AS FAMILY AND FRIENDS GATHER FROM FAR AND WIDE TO CELEBRATE, AUGUSTA AVIATION UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING YOU TO YOUR DESTINATION TO SHARE IN THESE TRADITIONS.
While there may not be an easy way to get to and from St Simons Island by ground, we've got that covered for you. Based in Augusta, GA, from the word, "go," we can be on the ramp at SSI in 2 hours in our King Air 90 aircraft. If it's the Atlanta area where you need to be, we can have you there in less than an hour and a half. Whatever your destination, we stand ready to accommodate your air travel needs. There are numerous airports in the Southeast we can access that aren't conducive to the airlines.
Air charter is a large focus of our business, and we dedicate ourselves to providing you
safe, convenient, luxury travel. If you have a favorite food or beverage preference, our charter schedulers are diligent in making sure you don’t take off without them. We even assist with any rental car needs at your destination.
"It's not about the transportation. It's about the experience when you fly with Augusta Aviation. Convenience and luxury air travel; it’s what we do,” says Becky Shealy, Vice President of Business Development.
Standing the test of time, Augusta Aviation is the oldest FBO in the Southeast. We owe our success to founder, W.M. Boshears,
affectionately known as, "Buster." Our humble beginnings started in 1940 under the banner of Augusta School of Aviation on a grass field in North Augusta, SC, known as Schultz Hill. In 1947, Buster and his brother, Forrest Boshears, purchased a bankrupt business at the location of modern-day Daniel Field, entering into the FBO business, while expanding the flight school location beyond Schultz Hill. Once established as an FBO at Daniel Field, Buster and Forrest added air-charter services to their core competencies. By 1961, the favorable response of the aviation industry to this FBO, along with the notoriety of the Masters Golf Tournament, made it necessary for the Boshears brothers to change the name of their beloved business to Augusta Aviation, Inc.
W.M. Boshears, Jr, known as, "Little Buster," took over the family business from his father
and uncle in the 70s, operating a successful, full-service FBO business providing flight training, aviation fuel sales, aircraft maintenance and aircraft charter. In 1990, Buster, Jr. sold the business to an ambitious aircraft mechanic he mentored, Steven Gay. Steve remains the owner today. While times have changed, that family feel of Augusta Aviation remains the same. Steve has family members in key areas of Augusta Aviation, and those who don't share Steve's DNA are considered extended family. Team Augusta Aviation is dedicated to the future success of the company.
Our fleet consists of 4 King Air C90s that are maintained by our own maintenance and detailing crew so you can be confident in the safety and cleanliness of our aircraft. With our
24/7 operation, we invite you to sit back, relax, and have confidence in our team.
The Beechcraft King Air is one of the most reliable, twin-engine turbo-prop aircraft on the market today. The normal range is 955 statute miles and can reach a maximum altitude of 24,000ft. The 90 model has a maximum speed of 287 mph and is capable of landing on short field runways of 3,500 ft to 4,000 ft plus. The King Air 90 cabin measures 4’10” H x 12’5” L x 4’6” W. This provides comfortable seating for 4-5 passengers with ample baggage space. Elevate your idea of luxury travel. The King Air is where style meets comfort.
Although air charter is a large part of Augusta Aviation, we don’t stop there. We offer flight
training programs specifically tailored to our students to include a full- motion, FAA approved, advanced training flight simulator. Our full-service maintenance shop maintains our trainer planes as well as our charter aircraft in addition to our base customer and transient planes. Augusta Aviation is also an Authorized Full-Service Cirrus Service Center. Through these programs we have strived to create a significant impact on our local community.
Several years ago, owner, Steven Gay, founded the General Aviation Initiative, GAI. This program promotes lower aviation fuel prices, and in turn promotes more affordable flying for our base and transient customers. Through the GAI, we have been able to support our community in other ways, such
as cancer awareness. Augusta Aviation has dedicated multiple aircraft to raising awareness for various types of cancer, as well as raising funds for the local cancer centers. We currently support childhood cancer, neuroendocrine cancer, breast cancer, esophageal cancer, and glioblastoma cancer awareness. We also work with local organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Augusta to promote flying and future careers in the aviation industry. We are grateful for the opportunity to further the love of aviation to those in our community.
Former mayor of Augusta, GA, Deke Copenhaver says of his experience working with our company: "We have had the pleasure of working with Augusta Aviation for a number of years now and couldn't recommend them more highly. They are professional and dependable, but more so than that, they are compassionate to our travel needs and we consider them both friends and extended family.”
While we strive to improve our community and the world of aviation, our joy is bringing the comfort of home and Southern hospitality to your travel. We are working 24/7 to ensure the safety, convenience, and hasslefree experience of flight. We'd love to work with you to take the hassle out of your travel arrangements. Create new memories this holiday season and experience the magic by choosing Augusta Aviation for your everyday travel needs. It will be your new favorite tradition! Call us at 770.733.8970 and put us to work for you.

"Luxury is no longer solely defined by size or price; today’s second-home buyers are motivated by exclusivity, unique features, and the desire to diversify their real estate portfolios."
YOUR LUXURY MARKET LEADER | SEA ISLAND/ST. SIMONS ISLAND
REAL ESTATE
TALKING TRENDS WITH PATRICK DUNN
As the year draws to a close, Elegant Island Living always invites Patrick Dunn of Sea Island Properties to share his insight about the current state of the real estate market on Sea Island and St. Simons. Patrick has been the top producing agent in Glynn County since 2012 with more than $1.7 billion in sales and pending contracts. While Patrick’s numbers clearly demonstrate his success, it’s also evident in the long list of buyers and sellers with whom he has worked and have become his friends. This impressive roster of clients includes top PGA Tour players, major corporate CEOs, and former Congressmen. Patrick has his thumb on the pulse of our community and the real estate industry.
WHAT TYPE OF BUYER DO YOU CONNECT WITH ON SEA ISLAND AND ST. SIMONS ISLAND?
Today’s buyers on Sea Island and St. Simons represent a newer, younger generation of successful entrepreneurs and professionals who have accumulated wealth at a much earlier age. These are sophisticated buyers who understand the market well, especially given the close-knit nature of our community. They rely on Realtors to provide up-to-date comparable data and in-depth property analyses. They are looking for premium properties that meet specific, high standards, and they’re willing to pay a premium for homes that check all their boxes.
Luxury is no longer solely defined by size or price; today’s second-home buyers are motivated by exclusivity, unique features, and the desire to diversify their real estate portfolios. However, they are also discerning and patient, willing to wait for the right investment. Finally, they seek properties with extensive amenities that align with and enhance their lifestyle.
HOW DOES THE SEA ISLAND/ST. SIMONS ISLAND LIFESTYLE ATTRACT BUYERS?
What truly sets Sea Island and St. Simons Island apart from other resort towns, is their genuine sense of community—a quality we make sure to emphasize to new buyers. Beyond the area’s stunning natural beauty, it’s the spirit of camaraderie here that stands out. Residents come together in times of hardship, like during recent storms, and
in times of joy, gathering to celebrate accomplishments and special events. Community gatherings like Taps at Twilight and Little League Opening Day foster a strong sense of unity, where people mingle and connect, creating a unique, down-to-earth atmosphere.
Lifestyle is a key reason many choose to call Sea Island and St. Simons Island home. We’re fortunate to offer a wide variety of seasonal activities, allowing residents to enjoy the best of beachfront leisure and winter pursuits alike. Whether it’s pickleball, golf, horseback riding, fishing, or hunting at Broadfield, Sea Island offers something for everyone who seeks an active lifestyle amidst year-round beauty.
WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE SEA ISLAND MARKET FOR 2025?
As you may know, real estate markets are highly local, with conditions like pricing and demand varying significantly from one region to another. However, it’s important to understand some overarching trends currently affecting residential real estate at a national level.
Nationwide, residential sales began to slow down in May. Many buyers and sellers chose to wait on the sidelines, hoping for inflation to ease, potential rate cuts from the Federal Reserve, more stability in the stock market, and some clarity amidst the unpredictability of an election year.
According to national housing experts, four key factors have been influencing this slowdown in sales activity:
• High mortgage rates
• Unaffordable home prices
• Low inventory levels
• Sluggish buyer demand
In contrast, our local market here on St. Simons Island and Sea Island has seen an uptick in both sales and volume. We believe that our market is moving toward a more stable and balanced environment. We’re also finally experiencing a healthy increase in listing inventory, which signals a positive shift toward a more sustainable housing market in our area.
WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO PATRICK’S SUCCESS?
We turned to Lewis Glenn, Vice President of Real Estate Brokerage at Sea Island Properties to answer this question. He says that Patrick’s extraordinary success in real estate can be attributed to a blend of professional skills and personal qualities and that Patrick has consistently set himself apart through the following attributes:
1. Market Knowledge: Patrick possesses an in-depth understanding of the Golden Isles market, enabling him to guide clients effectively.
2. Networking and Relationships: He leverages a vast network of connections, cultivating strong relationships that benefit his clients.
3. Market Strategy and Skills: Patrick is strategic in his approach, navigating the competitive real estate market with insight and finesse.
4. Communication Skills: His ability to listen to and understand client needs is a standout trait.
5. Customer Service: Patrick is known for providing exceptional service, always aiming to exceed client expectations.
6. Organization and Time Management: He efficiently manages his workload, maximizing productivity and responsiveness.
7. Adaptability, Resilience, and Persistence: Patrick handles challenges with resilience, adapting as needed to achieve the best outcomes.
8. Online Presence and Branding: He maintains a strong online presence, essential in today’s digital-driven market.
9. Technology Proficiency: Patrick is skilled in using technology to streamline his operations and enhance client service.
10. Community Involvement: His active engagement in the community strengthens his local reputation.
In addition to these traits, Patrick consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic, exceptional negotiation skills, calmness in difficult situations, and genuine care for his clients. His results back up his reputation: he’s been the top sales agent in the Golden Isles for 14 years, and his 2024 sales alone will exceed $307 million, placing him among the top agents nationally.
The bottom line is that Patrick can create positive results for a buyer or seller no matter the status of the market. He continues to believe that the Sea Island/St. Simons Island community is still the best place to be and those of us lucky enough to live, work, and play here should consider ourselves fortunate. If you want to make a move to our community or within it, give Patrick a call.
Patrick Dunn’s office is located at Sea Island Properties, 351 Sea Island Road, St. Simons Island. He can be reached at 912.222.0142 or by email at patrickdunn@seaisland.com.
Decorating with Plants for Holiday Cheer
BY MISTY JOHNS, COASTAL GREENERY, INC.
BESIDES BRINGING A CHRISTMAS TREE INTO YOUR HOME, YOU CAN ADD LIFE AND COLOR BY DECORATING YOUR HOME WITH OTHER HOLIDAY PLANTS.
The poinsettia is a proven performer for festooning a corner, fireplace hearth or tabletop with seasonal cheer. With leaves of white, coral, pink, red or burgundy, as well as in variegated tones, poinsettias splash color wherever you put them. Try grouping several
poinsettias at varied heights using upsidedown terra cotta pots for perches, weaving greenery or garland into bare spots.
Your local nursery will have wonderful blooming plants ready for you to start placing
around your house. Pots of paperwhite narcissus and amaryllis forced into bloom, cyclamen and Christmas cactus will cheer you on through holiday parties. For something new, try an exotic orchid or dainty miniature rose plant.
A small holiday tree that will still be right at home the rest of the year is the Norfolk Island Pine. Its rows of soft branches are naturals for holding lightweight ornaments and a sprinkling of bows. You can use your pine as an accent or even as your Christmas tree.
CARING FOR HOLIDAY PLANTS
You have decided to bring home holiday plants to provide festive decoration for the season. You may find yourself groaning as you think of the care you don’t know how to provide. Well, cheer up. The old saying about needing a “green thumb” to grow plants successfully is just not true.
There are cooks who just “know” how much of what spice to add, and there are some people who have the knack for growing great houseplants. But there are also cooks who get delicious results by carefully following a recipe; so, in the same way, anyone can grow healthy plants by following simple rules for their care and feeding. Most plants come with instructions—you know, those little plastic inserts you find sticking inside the plant’s potting soil. Follow these instructions and you’ll discover you can grow houseplants.
If there are no instructions that come with your plant, use any internet search engine to find guidelines for your plant’s care and feeding needs.
Christmas plants like azalea, Christmas pepper, Christmas cherry, cyclamen, Rieger elatior begonia, poinsettia and others, will stay attractive long after the holiday season, provided you furnish the conditions and care they require. All holiday plants require bright light during the day and a cool room (about 65°) at night. All holiday plants need watering before the soil is dry to the touch.
Cyclamens will need a little extra care when it comes to watering. Make sure to water the cyclamen around the edges of the pot because water inside the crown may cause rot. You can also set it in a dish of water and let it soak up moisture. Do not let the soil dry out while the plant is in flower, or the leaves will turn yellow.
So go beyond tree decorating this year and use some of these special plants to spread festive holiday color and cheer all around your home.
Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Celebrating the Golden Isles' Grand Dame
WHEN IT COMES TO ICONS OF STYLE IN THE GOLDEN ISLES MILDRED HUIE WILCOX. FRIENDS FROM NEAR AND FAR GATHERED RECENTLY TO CELEBRATE THE 95TH BIRTHDAY OF THE ELEGANT PATRON OF THE ARTS, AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN TO MOST AS MS. MILLIE. WE WERE HONORED TO BE AMONG THE INVITED GUESTS.
The daughter of Mildred Nix Huie, a renowned local artist, Millie was born in Albany, Georgia and attended college in Bristol, Virginia. She returned to Georgia to major in English Literature at the University of Georgia, and following her graduation, moved to New York City in 1950. In the Big Apple, Millie worked in Estonian couturier Madame Eleanora Garnett’s Fashion House, selecting fabrics for the designer’s creations. As she developed her eye for art and fashion, she also began traveling abroad and modeling the fashions as well, and thus began her lifelong career in aesthetics.
In 1966, Millie returned to St. Simons Island, where her mother and friends Stella Morton, Selma Shelander, and Marja Albright, had established The Left Bank Art Gallery. Robert Wilcox, a hotelier who had been raised in France and the man who became Millie’s husband, entered her life at this auspicious time.
Although Mildred had been managing the Left Bank gallery, she found this left her no time for painting and her other artistic endeavors. She happily turned the reins of Left Bank over to Mille and Robert. With Robert’s French connections, they began establishing relationships with French artists and expanded The Left Bank Art Gallery from a showcase for local artists to a home for national and international artists,
with an emphasis on French Impressionism. Even leading metropolitan galleries would be envious of the collections displayed and sold at Left Bank and the roster of phenomenally talented artists they developed over the years.
Following her mother’s death in 2000, Millie opened the Mildred Huie Mediterranean House Plantation Museum in her honor. Left Bank Art Gallery closed in 2014, and the Plantation Museum property is now a protected greenspace property of the St. Simons Land Trust, but Millie’s contributions to our community haven’t ceased. In 2011, the
College of Coastal Georgia dedicated the HuieWilcox Gallery on campus in honor of “The Two Mildreds – Mother & Daughter – Artists, Advocates, Teachers, Community Leaders & Citizens of the World.” The gallery at The Ritz Theatre in Historic Downtown Brunswick is named in Millie’s honor as well. Those of us who have been part of Millie’s orbit in the past near-century consider ourselves lucky to know her and were thrilled to honor this genteel grande dame on her special day. Happy, Happy Birthday to a woman who makes our community and our world a more beautiful place.
Savor the Season: Healthy Holiday Meal Tips for Diabetics
By Southeast Georgia Health System
“IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR …”
The holiday season often evokes images of family and friends gathered around tables laden with sweets, treats and timehonored indulgences. But how do you navigate those temptations if you are living with diabetes?
Allison Hendry, a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes care and education specialist at Southeast Georgia Health System, has answers. She says that people with diabetes can maintain safe blood sugar levels without depriving themselves of their festive favorites. With planning and portion control, you can even eat a bit of Aunt Sue’s sweet potato casserole. Here Ms. Hendry addresses common situations and concerns that people with diabetes face –especially at this time of year.
Why is it important to not skip meals before a holiday feast, especially if you have diabetes?
While many people want to “make room” for the big meal of the day, skipping meals can lead to overeating and low or high blood sugar levels. To avoid this, simply eat small meals throughout the day.
What types of healthy snacks help stabilize blood sugar levels?
Combine protein with carbohydrates to stabilize your blood sugar; for example, hummus with raw vegetables, tuna with whole wheat crackers or non-fat, low- or zero-sugar Greek yogurt with nuts.
How does eating slowly help you feel full? It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to signal
the sensation of fullness. By chewing slowly and mindfully, you consume less calories and digest your food easier.
Why is it important to always drink plenty of water?
If you have diabetes and are even slightly dehydrated, your body has difficulty regulating your blood pressure and blood sugar. Dehydration can also cause headaches, dizziness and more serious problems. Staying hydrated helps keep your blood sugar stable while protecting your kidneys, heart and nervous system. Drinking a full glass of water before a holiday meal also makes you feel fuller, which helps you make healthier choices. Caffeinated drinks and alcohol dehydrate; choose plain water, or flavored, non-sweetened seltzer water. You could also add a flavored sugar-free powdered drink mix to regular water.
What foods should you fill your plate with and how can you manage portion sizes for casseroles and treats?
Use the “healthy plate” method: fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli or green beans, one-fourth with protein such as roasted ham or turkey and one-fourth with starches. Your one-fourth portion of starch can include a tablespoon of each of your favorite casseroles. Add a roll if you like. Using a nineinch plate helps with portion control, too.
What healthy side dishes could you bring to seasonal gatherings?
Consider roasted vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower or broccoli, or a bowl of fresh strawberries and blueberries.
How does meal planning help people manage diabetes during the holidays?
Meal preparation helps you stick to your eating plan. Use the healthy plate method to plan weekly meals and shop in advance.
What are the benefits of a 10-minute walk after eating?
Walking after a meal is the greatest thing you can do. Even slow walks help lower blood sugar levels, benefit digestion, boost metabolism, aid relaxation and improve sleep.
What are your top tips for maintaining a healthy diet during the holidays?
Meal planning, not skipping meals, staying hydrated, eating in moderation and moving after a meal top the list. Also, focus on your family and friends, not the food.
Where can people living with diabetes find more support?
The American Diabetes Association website, diabetes.org, is a great resource, and their diabetesfoodhub.org website has many holiday recipes. With a doctor’s referral, the Health System offers three resources: 1) free monthly diabetes education classes, 2) appointments with a diabetes care and education specialist, and 3) appointments for Medical Nutrition Therapy with a registered dietitian. How Will Working Affect Social Security Benefits?
BY CINDI PHILLIPS, PRESIDENT, FINANCIAL FREEDOM ENTERPRISES, INC.
In a recent survey, 75% of current workers stated they plan to work for pay after retiring.1 And that possibility raises an interesting question: how will working affect Social Security benefits?
The answer to that question requires an understanding of three key concepts: full retirement age, the earnings test, and taxable benefits.
Full Retirement Age
Most workers don't face an "official" retirement date, according to the Social Security Administration. The Social Security program allows workers to start receiving benefits as soon as they reach age 62 -or to put off receiving benefits up until age 70.2
"Full retirement age" is the age at which individuals become eligible to receive 100% of their Social Security benefits. Individuals born in 1960 or later can receive 100% of their benefits at age 67.
Earnings Test
Starting Social Security benefits before reaching full retirement age brings into play the earnings test.
If a working individual starts receiving Social Security payments before full retirement age, the Social Security Administration will deduct
$1 in benefits for each $2 that person earns above an annual limit. For 2025, the income limit is $23,4003
During the year in which a worker reaches full retirement age, Social Security benefit reduction falls to $1 in benefits for every $3 in earnings. For 2025, the limit is $62,160 before the month the worker reaches full retirement age.3
For example, let's assume a worker begins receiving Social Security benefits during the year he or she reaches full retirement age. In that year, before the month the worker reaches full retirement age, the worker earns $65,000. The Social Security benefit would be reduced as follows:
Earnings above annual limit
$65,000 - $62,160 = $2,840
One-third excess
$2,840 ÷3 = $946.67
In this case, the worker's annual Social Security benefit would have been reduced by $946.67 because they are continuing to work.
Taxable Benefits
Once you reach full retirement age, Social Security benefits will not be reduced no matter how much you earn. However, Social Security benefits are taxable.
For example, say you file a joint return, and you and your spouse are past the full retirement age. In the joint return, you report a combined income of between $32,000 and $44,000. You may have to pay income tax on as much as 50% of your benefits. If your combined income is more than $44,000, as much as 85% of your benefits may be subject to income taxes.4
There are many factors to consider when evaluating Social Security benefits. Understanding how working may affect total benefits can help you put together a strategy that allows you to make the most of all your retirement income sources - including Social Security.

Your Passions
Protecting Your Pets from Holiday Hazards
WHEN WE DECK THE HALLS, IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT MAKE OUR CHRISTMAS MERRY AND BRIGHT CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR OUR PETS.
Christmas Trees
Many of our feline friends tend to climb up or into trees and they, as well as their canine counterparts, can even knock them over. To avoid this, you may want to keep the tree in an area that can be closed off from your pets when you aren’t home to monitor. Make sure the tree is secured as solidly as possible. If you have a natural tree, don’t let your dogs or cats chew on branches or needles from the tree. If swallowed, pine needles can become lodged in the intestinal tract and puncture the lining or cause a blockage. Also, water from the tree base may contain harmful chemicals.
Decorations
Christmas lights, tinsel, and breakable ornaments should be placed away from the
bottom of the tree where pets can easily reach them. They can attract unwanted attention and pose a danger if chewed on or knocked down and shattered. Strands of tinsel can be very dangerous to cats especially if swallowed.
Holiday Plants and Greenery
Holiday plants and greenery: Several seasonal plants, including poinsettias, mistletoe, ivy, and holly are poisonous to pets if ingested.
Unsafe Foods
It’s easy to get distracted when prepping a holiday meal and entertaining guests, but you’ll want to make sure your pets aren’t eating foods they shouldn’t by stealing them off tables, counters, or from the garbage. Advise guests not to give your pets “treats” from the table or
dinner leftovers. Also watch for unattended stockings and Christmas gifts left under the tree that contain candy and other gourmet treats. Some common items that may cause health problems for your pets include high fat foods, bones, candy (especially chocolate and gum or other candy sweetened with Xylitol), garlic, onions, raisins and grapes, nuts, and milk.
Candles
You should never leave burning candles unattended, especially when you have pets in the house. Animals may accidentally knock the candles over or cause other items to brush the flame.
Flight Risk
During parties, it’s easy for a pet to slip outside unnoticed when guests are coming and going, and noise may keep them away. When traveling, pets may become agitated or frightened by unfamiliar places, people, noises, or other animals and try to flee or hide if they are separated from you. Holiday fireworks also are another common cause of runaway pets. Whether you travel with your pets or host holiday parties at home, you should make sure your dogs and cats are wearing collars and tags with up-to-date ID that provides a way to reach you, even if they are also micro-chipped. We recommend writing the information on the inside of your pet’s collar with a permanent marker just in case the IDs tag or ring that holds them detaches from the collar.
In Case of Emergency
Finally, make sure you know your vet’s holiday hours and identify the closest 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic before any emergencies occur. Keep that contact information in your phone to save valuable time when it’s needed.
We hope you and your furry friends have a safe and happy holiday!

Time to Sparkle

FOR MANY THE NAME CHAMPAGNE CONJURES UP THOUGHTS OF CELEBRATION, JOY AND LUXURY. IF CHAMPAGNE HAD A HOLIDAY, I THINK WE WOULD ALL AGREE IT WOULD BE NYE, SO LET’S TAKE A PLUNGE INTO THE RICH TAPESTRY OF SPARKLING WINE AND CHAMPAGNE.
For many the name Champagne conjures up thoughts of celebration, joy and luxury. If Champagne had a holiday, I think we would all agree it would be NYE, so let’s take a plunge into the rich tapestry of sparkling wine and Champagne.
Dom Pierre Pérignon (1638-1715) is often considered the OG of seizing the foam, but he was quite late to the party. The Benedictine monks of Saint-Hilaire in Limoux (Southern France) stumbled upon these spheres of gold decades prior to anyone in Champagne. The Italian region of Franciacorta claims to have produced sparkling wine in the 1500s. Several Englishmen in the 1600s are credited with documenting the process of discovering secondary fermentation within individual bottles. It is this process that the Champenoise significantly improved, which led to its popularity among French nobility, European aristocracy, and even
Taylor Swift with her “Champagne Problems.”
An empty bottle is the only Champagne problem that I could ever foresee.
Champagne, named after the French region in which it is born, is created using the méthode Champenoise; which is known as méthode traditionelle outside of Champagne’s vinous boundaries. It is this process in which the second fermentation occurs in each bottle to create silky, persistent bubbles. The primary grapes are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier, offering notes of brioche, citrus and (if aged) marzipan. There are many imitators around the globe but sparkling wine from Champagne is the only wine that is allowed to use the region as its namesake.
region. Cava must be made using the traditional method but gets a little nerdier with the grape selection. Like other wine regions of the world, Cava has a laundry list of allowed varieties but the big three are Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada. Cava offers a versatile, affordable alternative to Champagne.
Italy has a rich variety of sparklers, with the most well-known being Prosecco. This famous bubbly is made primarily with the Glera grape from the Veneto region. These wines are lighter than Champagne due to the production method. It is here that we find the Charmat process. Also known as the tank method, Charmat goes through a secondary fermentation within a large vat and not individual bottles. Italy also offers the off dry to sweet sparkling wines from the countryside around Asti in Piedmont, and Franciacorta, a far more Champagne-like wine from the Lombardy region. Franciacorta is the bee’s knees when it comes to Italian suds.
Cava is Spain’s most notable sparkling wine region, with most produced in the Penedes
There are many regions producing sparkling wine around the planet. Keep an eye out for Sekt, which is sparkling wine from Germany and Austria, or the Cap Classique produced in South Africa. Of course, our own West Coast is cranking out some amazing bubbles too. Sparkling wines offer diversity, a wealth of flavors and styles making them perfect for everyday enjoyment to noteworthy celebrations.
Before you step into the night, you’ll want something to drink. With so many styles and variations in sparkling wine world we invite you to visit us at JP’s Wine and Spirits for some extra sparkly recommendations.
Cheers!

Two Loves, One Letter
In December 1892, St. Simons Island shopkeeper Robert Colin Smith was in love. He had met the object of his affection, Kate Milikin, that summer, when she visited her family’s island cottage. Kate was an annual visitor, but Robert was a resident; he and his brother, Fleming, operated Fair’s General Store near the St. Simons Pier. When the summer ended, Kate’s family returned home to Wayne County, and Kate began work as a schoolteacher in Atkinson, a town around forty miles from the island and from Robert.
The letters that Robert wrote to Kate before their marriage in April 1893 showcase just how much he missed her. He addressed this December letter to “my dear sweet little Katrina.” While he enjoyed her letters, he wrote that he would “rather see [her, even] if it was only for five minutes” than receive a hundred-page message. These letters also reveal how deeply Robert loved St. Simons and the community around Ocean Pier. In his dispatches to Kate, he recalls walks along the beach, preparations for an island Christmas parade, and voyages on his sailboat (named, with obvious inspiration, Kate).
In his December letter, Robert recounted a visit to the Keeper’s Dwelling at the St. Simons Lighthouse, where he dined with the keepers, Mr. and Mrs. Peckham. The Peckhams also hosted another young guest, Barney Postell, whose presence at the table provided much entertainment. Striving to be polite, Barney put down his utensils and gave Mr. Peckham his full attention while the keeper told a story. Then, as Robert wrote it, “I would reach over and take his biscuit. Mrs. Peckham would offer him another. Mr. Peckham would tell another story, I would steal the biscuit, and Mrs. Peckham would give [Barney] another one.” Robert piled eight stolen biscuits onto Barney’s plate and teasingly asked if he liked biscuits. Barney, still not in on the joke, responded that he preferred cornbread.
The first of this month’s featured images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s collections is the first page of Robert Colin Smith’s December 5, 1892 letter, addressed from Ocean Pier. The second image shows travelers arriving on the pier with the St. Simons Lighthouse and nearby cottages in the background, about a decade after the letter was written.
