Why You Should Create a Thankful List

November has long been recognized as the month of Thanksgiving, a time to pause and reflect on the many blessings in our lives, even if just for a day. But what if we could cultivate gratitude as a daily practice? One effective way to do this is by starting a Thankful List.

Maintaining a list of things you’re grateful for serves as a powerful reminder of the abundance that surrounds us. Regularly jotting down what you appreciate can significantly enhance your overall well-being. This practice encourages a shift in focus from what’s lacking to what’s flourishing in your life. By acknowledging both the grand and the subtle blessings, you train your mind to recognize the positives.

Creating a Thankful List is also an effective strategy to counter negativity and anxiety. The simple practice of listing your gratitude can transform your perspective. The possibilities for gratitude are limitless, but here are six things you might consider including:

Good Health. Cherish your physical and mental well-being.

Family & Friends. Celebrate the love and support offered by those closest to you.

Kindness of Others. Recognize the acts of goodwill you’ve experienced.

Moments of Joy. Savor both small and significant moments that bring happiness.

Life Experiences. Be thankful for lessons learned and growth achieved through your journey.

Companionship of Pets. And we shouldn’t forget to be grateful for the unconditional adoration we receive from our animals.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to overlook the good that surrounds us. Remember, there are countless reasons to be thankful! Here at Elegant Island Living, we’re thankful for YOU, dear readers.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us to all of you!

15 YEARScelebrates The RSM Classic

And what an amazing 15 years it has been! From last year’s recordbreaking -29 performance by Ludvig Åberg (#6 in World Golf Rankings at the time of publication) to competitive playoffs and overtime rounds like Mackenzie Hughes’ big win as a rookie in 2018 to the annual PGA TOUR Wives v. Husbands Wiffle Ball Challenge with the Savannah Bananas joining the fun and years that included stellar concerts featuring Darius Rucker, Cole Swindell, and Martina McBride. These are just a few of the highlights from the tournament held right in our backyard and excitement is already buzzing for this year’s event.

The RSM Classic, an Official PGA TOUR Event hosted by the Davis Love Foundation, began in 2010 as The McGladrey Classic and was rebranded in 2015 when McGladrey LLP united with fellow firms in its network and changed its name to RSM. Contested play for the first five years took place solely on the Seaside Course, but 2015 marked changes to that as well, and the RSM Classic added play on Plantation, Seaside’s sister course. The allowed the tournament field to increase from 132 to 156 players. Now in its 15th year, the RSM Classic is the eighth and final event of the FedExCup Fall series with a purse of $7.6 million, including $1,368,000 to the winner and August500 FedExCup points.

This much-anticipated event returns the week of November 18-24, and it promises to be another year of exciting competition on the course and the unrivaled Southern hospitality for which our little island is known. From the beginning, the vision of tournament host professional golfer Davis Love III for this event held in his hometown has been simple: give players an enjoyable but demanding test at Sea Island Golf Club and do it in a relaxed setting that offers a wonderful experience for pros, their families, caddies, sponsors, volunteers and spectators. As RSM Classic Tournament Director Todd Thompson has explained, "We spend all year planning a memorable experience for players, their families, caddies, our partners, volunteers, media, and the spectators who visit us from across the country and around the globe. Our team is so excited to welcome everyone to the

Golden Isles and Sea Island Resort so they can experience great golf and the warm Southern hospitality of our area. We are so fortunate to make our home in this amazing community that has embraced The RSM Classic and all those who come here.”

Love’s vision has clearly been realized because year after year, golfers and their families, as well as visiting members of the media, rave about the hospitality and friendly atmosphere, and hundreds of volunteers and spectators return to enjoy the intimate environment of the tournament.

The tournament attracts a high-quality field of golfers bolstered by some of our local (and formerly local) players. The current list of local players on the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour besides tour host Davis Love III are John Augenstein, Spencer Ralston, Jonathan Byrd, Brian Harman, Andrew Novak, Harris English, JT Poston, Joey Garber, Zach Johnson, Greyson Sigg, Will Gordon, Patton Kizzire, Davis Thompson, Ben Griffin, Michael Thompson, Keith Mitchell, and Paul Peterson. But don’t presume there’s a “hometown advantage” playing Seaside, because you’ll notice that none of those players’ names are on the list of champions here. Zach Johnson and Chris Kirk (2013 Champion) are the only golfers who have played in all 15 years of the tournament. They’re both committed to play again this year, along with fellow Team RSM members Kyle Westmoreland, and Davis Love III.

But the benefits of the tournament reach far beyond the world of golf and the positive effects last much longer than this one week

in November. The economic impact for the Golden Isles is estimated to be between $15 and $25 million. Through the “Power of Love” program and the Davis Love Foundation, the tournament has raised more than $42 million for charities since 2010. Established in 2005 by Davis Love, III, the ambition mission of the Davis Love Foundation is to help build a better future for children and their families who are at risk of poor educational, economic, social and health outcomes. The Foundation supports both national and community-based programs that focus on children and families in need through grants and donations. Special Olympics and Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Georgia are just two examples of the many organizations supported by the Foundation. This year’s Power of Love charitable gift total will be announced from Sea Island on Thursday, November 21.

The week before the tournament, the St. Simons Island Rotary Club offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with RSM Tournament Pros and give back to the community in keeping with the spirit of the tournament. In an exclusive partnership with the Davis Love Foundation, they will be presenting the 13th Annual Meet the RSM Pros at at the Golden Isles Green on the tournament grounds of Sea Island Golf Club on St Simons Island (Parking will be available at the Sea Island Lodge). Presented as the immediate lead in to RSM Classic tournament week, it

takes place Friday, November 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Meet The RSM Pros gives attendees a rare opportunity for casual and candid conversation with RSM Tournament Pros. The evening includes light bites from Southern Soul Barbeque, wine and beer, and exclusive personal interviews with RSM Classic Pros by Rich Styles, founder of the Back9Boys. Up-and-coming country artist Braedon Harris will be returning to provide musical entertainment. All proceeds from the event benefit charities supporting children and families in the Golden Isles community. Tickets are $100 per person, or $175 for two people, and are available online at ssirotary.org/ mtp-2024.

While tournament grounds are closed to the public on Monday and Tuesday, you’re invited to join the PGA TOUR Wives and their PGA TOUR husbands on Tuesday evening, November 19, for the 12th annual PGA TOUR Wives Wiffle Ball Classic. Held the Frederica Academy Baseball field on St. Simons Island, beginning at 5:00 p.m., this free community event that includes local youth from the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia on the Wives and Husbands teams is always a great time for a good cause! In case that’s not enough good, clean, family fun for you, members of the Savannah Bananas will be there to add to the entertainment. You won’t want to miss this evening of family competition and lots of laughs!

Wednesday, November 20, is Community Day, benefiting the Golden Isles Talent Development Strategy. The community is invited to preview the top PGA TOUR Professionals that will be competing in this year’s tournament as they play in a highlight of tournament week: the Yamaha Pro-Am. Enjoy a relaxing day and take in the beautiful seaside setting of Sea Island Golf Club. Admission is free, as is the parking and round-trip shuttle transportation from the General Parking area located at the St. Simons Island Airport. Our special EIL staff recommendation is that you stick around Wednesday afternoon to check out the Charity Putting Challenge at 3:30 p.m. on the Speedway Putting course. For the Challenge,

twelve teams made up of one PGA Tour Player, one student from Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia, one Special Olympics Athlete, and a caddie/scorekeeper from the RSM Corporate Team, compete in a scramble format. The benefactors from the Charity Putting are numerous charities far and wide that earn $10,000 apiece. The Davis Love Foundation raises $120,000 during the Putting Challenge and it’s always a heartwarming experience that will leave you with a smile.

Competitive play for the tournament begins with Round 1 on Thursday, November 21. Round 1 and Friday’s Round 2 will be played on both the Seaside and Plantation Courses. On Saturday, play shifts to only the Seaside Course with Round 3. In recognition of the tournament’s 15th anniversary this year, a special initiative is being planned for any eagles that are made on the 15th hole of the Seaside Course, so pay attention for that! The final round of the tournament takes place on Sunday, with the trophy presentation held on the 18th green immediately following completion of play. No matter what day you come out to the tournament, you’ll want to make sure you check out the Youth Zone for the kids, and the Golden Isles Green where they’ll be serving up delicious fare and drinks, and you’ll find RSM Classic apparel and more in the merchandise tent.

Please note that you will encounter volunteers everywhere you go at the RSM Classic. From walking scorers, marshals, caddie services, player services, transportation, cart operations and hospitality. The enthusiasm from the community to assist with the tournament is impressive with over 1,200 individuals sharing

their time to help operate the tournament. While most are from the Golden Isles, many travel just to volunteer with the RSM Classic each year.

For our military servicemen and women (active and retired) and first responders, please be aware you have special benefits available. The RSM Classic salutes the men and women who serve and have served in our armed forces. To show their support, all active and retired servicemen and women with proper ID will be granted admission to the tournament at no charge, as will first responders. They will have access to the Heritage Plastics Heroes Outpost located near #9 green of the Seaside Course. The Heritage Plastics Heroes Outpost is a covered hospitality venue that includes complimentary food and non-alcoholic beverages as well as premium golf viewing. In addition, special tournament pricing is available to all military veterans.

Come out to watch exciting PGA TOUR competition and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of Sea Island Golf Club and the warmth of community. You can also feel good knowing that your support aids the mission of the Davis Love Foundation to assist children and families in our community. Patron Passes are $60 for each day or $70 for a Good Any Day pass. Some of our fondest Christmas nostalgia comes out of the 50s and 60s. The 50s were a big time for Christmas parades and new toys! Children’s toy sales took advantage of the market created by the baby boom era. Popular novelty items included Silly Putty, introduced in 1950, Play-Doh in 1956, and Mr. Potato Head who came on the scene in 1952, when kids used a real potato with the plastic features. Die-cast metal Matchbox cars were sold by the millions after Lesney Products created them in 1953 based on employee Jack Odell’s news that his daughter’s school would only allow toys that were small enough to fit inside a matchbox. For outdoor fun in 1958, the Frisbee and Hula Hoop were popular choices. Barbie’s arrival in 1959

A Merry Mid-Century Christmas!

changed the world of dolls forever, and left an impact that we see even today — right, Ken? The 60s brought us favorites like Operation, Rock’Em Sock’Em Robots, Twister, the Easy-Bake Oven, and Lite Brite. This era is also when some of our favorite Christmas movies appeared: A Charlie Brown Christmas, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and Rankin/Bass classics Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Little Drummer Boy, and Frosty the Snowman. And where would we be without Christmas albums from the 60s from artists like Nat King Cole, Burl Ives, Andy Williams, Vince Guaraldi, The Beach Boys, Elvis, and The Chipmunks? Simply unthinkable! Here’s to those good ol’ holly jolly days.

When prospective students imagine attending college in a desirable, coastal area, the College of Coastal Georgia’s motto touches on the reality that “College is Better by the Beach.” The natural beauty of the Golden Isles and its vast marshes that change colors with the tides and seasons make this region an optimal place for higher education in a vibrant destination where 80% of graduates move from campus into the community.

Shining a Guiding Light FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

“College of Coastal Georgia is growing, and this is a wonderful time to be joining this community. From our nationally ranked nursing program to the groundbreaking of our new Center for the Arts, we continue to evolve to meet the needs of our students and our region,” said Dr. Johnny L. Evans Jr., interim president of College of Coastal Georgia.

Dr. Evans served as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Coastal Georgia for five years until he was summoned to transition in leadership when former college president, Dr. Michelle Johnston, was named president of Georgia Southwestern State University last spring. “I am honored to continue our high-achieving journey in this interim role

as we continue making positive connections between students and the workforce,” said Dr. Evans. “I am a champion for all-out student success, inspired by my experiences as an undergraduate student at Georgia College & State University. The care and mentoring provided to me by excellent faculty advisors has inspired my mission to continue this work, mentoring our next generations for wholistic success.”

Before joining College of Coastal Georgia in 2019, Dr. Evans held leadership positions as the dean of math and science and subsequently dean of arts and sciences at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. He dedicated the first 13 years of his academic career at Lee University in Tennessee as a professor of chemistry and physics. Dr. Evans holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Georgia College and a doctorate in physical chemistry from University of Florida. His academic journey includes postdoctoral research at

A navigator believes that higher education benefits all. A contribution of $1,000 or more in unrestricted funds to the Navigator Society enables the College of Coastal Georgia to continue the journey in changing the lives of students while creating a lasting impact on communities here in the Golden Isles and beyond.

Did you know? Approximately 80% of College of Coastal graduates remain in the Golden Isles after receiving their diplomas, adding their passion, skills, and knowledge to the local economy.

The College has contributed $500 million in recent years to support the economic growth and prosperity of the coastal Georgia area by focusing on providing high-quality education and workforce development.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Savannah River National Laboratory. Outside of academics, Dr. Evans is an artist and metal sculptor. The artwork he crafts from steel, brass and copper reflects his passion for capturing the beauty of nature through sculpture.

This academic season, the College celebrates the highest number of high school students taking classes via dual enrollment programs –approximately 500 – and the second-largest freshman class in its history with nearly 3,500 students enrolled. Most of the growth in enrolled students is from outside the College’s general five-county area. Students pursue a wide range of majors, including hospitality and tourism, environmental sciences, marine science, coastal ecology, criminal justice, nursing and health sciences, and teacher education. The College benefits from its proximity to rich research opportunities on the islands, beaches, and wetlands, as well as its collaborative partnerships with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and world-class resorts, hotels, and restaurants.

A $16 million allocation from the state of Georgia is paying to expand the Miriam and Hugh Nunnally Health and Sciences campus. The College’s nationally ranked nursing program and its partnership with Southeast Georgia Health System fill a critical demand for healthcare providers and provide a path for many nursing students to stay and work where they trained.

The College’s Hospitality, Tourism & Events Management, and Culinary Arts programs will expand into an innovative living-learning lab to provide hands-on training for a workforce that will deliver exceptional visitor experiences. The Golden Isles is an internationally lauded region. With highly skilled graduates from these programs, we have the potential to attract and inspire repeat visitors to our area.

Renovations are currently underway for the Andrews Center, one of the original campus buildings. The Andrews Center will continue to serve as a hub for student success, housing the offices of the registrar, bursar, financial aid, and technology services, while also featuring a newly reconfigured multi-purpose space for educational and student activities.

A new community performing arts center, an upgrade to the campus road system and a new softball field are also coming to life. Mariner athletic teams consistently rank nationally and in The Sun Conference.

College of Coastal Georgia is a leader in higher education, transforming lives through engaged learning … every student, every time. With a dedicated and passionate interim president in place, successes continue, and the College will celebrate ribbon cuttings across the campus this year. A Trusted Legacy & Local Strength

In a world where banking options seem endless and increasingly digital, Southeastern Bank stands as a steadfast reminder of what it means to be rooted in the community, offering more than just financial services. As the holder of the oldest active bank charter in the state of Georgia, Southeastern Bank is celebrating its 135th anniversary this year, marking over a century of unwavering service, strength and commitment to its local communities. For residents of St. Simons and the surrounding areas, the Bank’s island location is much more than a place to manage finances; it’s a symbol of stability and trust.

The Power of Local: Decisions Made by Neighbors for Neighbors

At Southeastern Bank, banking is personal. Local bankers make decisions directly benefiting people and businesses in the community. This community-first approach is a hallmark of the Bank’s service model. The Bank’s team understands the unique needs of the local economy, because they live, work and play in the same communities as their customers. This local decision-making means quicker answers and customized solutions, a distinct advantage for the Bank’s customers.

When you walk through the doors of Southeastern Bank’s island location, you’re greeted by friendly, familiar faces, including team members Keith Crusan - SVP, Commercial Lending; Becca Link - VP & Branch Manager; Jessica Jinkins-Sills – Universal Banker; Jacinda Creach - Teller, and Garrison Ryfun - Management Trainee. This personal touch differentiates Southeastern Bank, enabling it to understand what individual customers need, whether it’s securing a mortgage for a growing family, helping a small business thrive, tucking money away in a rainy-day fund or all of the above.

A Specialty in Small Business Banking

As the lifeblood of any local economy, small businesses need a banking partner that understands their challenges and opportunities. Southeastern Bank excels in this area, offering specialized small business banking services designed to help businesses on the island and in its other markets succeed. Whether it’s a start-up seeking working capital, or an established business needing new equipment or expansion financing, Southeastern Bank provides solutions for its customers.

Southeastern has speed and flexibility that other banks may not have. Being local, Southeastern doesn’t have to go through the lengthy approval processes often associated with larger financial institutions. Decisions are made locally, by people who understand the unique business climate and personal dynamics of coastal Georgia. This agility ensures small businesses can act quickly and seize opportunities as they arise.

Conventional Mortgages with Competitive Pricing

Southeastern Bank also provides access to extremely competitive mortgage products through its strategic partnership with Rocket Mortgage. Customers get the best of both worlds - personalized local service combined with the pricing and efficiency of a leading national mortgage provider. Southeastern has garnered many awards from Rocket for production. Last year, Southeastern ranked #4 overall among banks nationwide that partnered with Rocket Mortgage! Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer, looking to refinance or purchasing a second home on the island, Holly White, Southeastern’s mortgage lender for the Glynn County area, can help find the best solution to meet your needs.

History Honored at SSI Location

The Bank’s island location is a unique tribute to the area’s rich history. The building itself was

designed to resemble the former Sea Island Stables that once stood nearby, with its open, airy structure harkening back to a time when life on the island moved at a slower pace. Inside the lobby, visitors are greeted by the Bank’s original vault from 1888. Weighing a staggering seven tons, the vault was originally transported from Philadelphia by train to Darien, where the Bank was first established. The vault was later sold, but eventually returned to the Bank as a treasured artifact, now on display at the island office.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

While Southeastern Bank takes pride in its deep roots, it’s equally focused on the future. The Bank offers online and mobile banking technology, giving customers easy access to their accounts 24/7. From online bill pay to mobile deposits, account alerts and more, Southeastern Bank ensures that customers can manage their finances with ease, whether they’re at home, on the go or on the island’s iconic beaches.

Yet, Southeastern Bank continues to prioritize exceptional customer service. For example, when you call Southeastern Bank, you’ll speak to a real person who can help, not an automated system. This blend of tradition and innovation enables Southeastern to meet the evolving demands of today’s banking while maintaining their defining personal touch.

Local Roots

It bears repeating: One of the key attributes of Southeastern’s island office is its team. Every employee at the branch not only works on the island but has connections in the community; this local connection allows the team to offer personalized service, knowing the relationships they build today will continue for generations to come.

In addition to its island location, Southeastern Bank also serves Glynn County with a Brunswick branch, and nine other locations in southeast Georgia and northeast Florida.

Honoring the Past, Serving the Present and Looking to the Future

Southeastern’s island location represents more than just a place to conduct financial transactions. Rich in history and deeply connected to the community, the Bank honors its past while also serving the needs of today’s customers and looking to the future ahead.

The Bank’s lobby hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with extended hours until 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. The drivethru is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and special appointments can be arranged by calling 912.357.2265. Learn more at SoutheasternBank.com.

More Than Mums For Autumn Garden Color

FALL IS HERE BUT YOUR FLOWERING COLORS ARE FAR FROM FINISHED. OF COURSE, MANY SUMMER FLOWERS CONTINUE TO BLOOM INTO THE AUTUMN MONTHS, AT LEAST UNTIL THE FIRST HARD FROST. HERE ARE A FEW SPECIFIC FALL FAVORITES:

CHRYSANTHEMUMS

No plant is more associated with autumn than chrysanthemums, better known as mums. Thousands of garden centers offer varying sizes and styles, from button mums to single or daisy mums. These perennials come in all colors, except blue. They are easy to care for and can be transplanted while budding or in full bloom. Repotting Chrysanthemums will give the roots the nourishment they need to continue to push out new buds. Purchase

mums with closed buds to maximize their bloom time. Dead-heading the flowers regularly will allow for continual blooms. Begin pinching back the stems when the plant is five inches tall to keep plants bushy. Mums need full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Feed them weekly during the growing season.

Potted mums can be separated into two categories, florist and hardy. Mums sold as potted plants or gift plants in the spring are generally florist mums. Hardy mums, also known as garden mums, are largely seen in the fall and they come in a variety of colors and bloom forms. Hardy mums will survive the winter if they are planted in a plant bed and cut to the ground once blooming has stopped in the fall. They also will deliver the most beautiful colors the second year if transplanted into the ground during the first year.

Chrysanthemums come in different flower shapes (decorative, pompom, single/daisy) and types (anemone, semi-double, single quilled), so be adventurous and choose a mixture of Chrysanthemums for your gorgeous fall display!

JAPANESE ANEMONE

Anemones are herbaceous perennials belonging to the buttercup family. The popularity of these graceful flowers, which grow two to three feet tall, is still increasing. Their long-lasting blooms come in pink, lavender, mauve, and white with silken-looking petals perfect for cutting. The Japanese Anemone originated in China and are poisonous if digested.

Japanese Anemones prefer partial shade, but they can tolerate full afternoon sun. They need plenty of water with well-drained soil and good winter mulch. Japanese anemones spread via underground runners which are easier spread in loose, sandy soils. Once established, the more sun the Japanese Anemones get, the

faster they will spread. Be careful planting them in small gardens with other plant material as they are invasive and may outcompete any surrounding plants. There are far less invasive varieties of the Japanese Anemone which include Hadspen Abundance, September Charm, and Wild Swan.

These beautiful, colorful plants are well suited for garden containers on your porch, planted as a border, in large plant beds or even natural areas. Japanese Anemones bring life to late summer landscapes and will continue blooming through the end of fall. Plant them in spring, spaced 8-12 inches apart, for strong fall blooms. They may appear delicate but this plant, once established, can survive with little maintenance. Japanese anemones are resistant to most insects and diseases and most importantly for our area, they are salt tolerant.

ASTERS

AThe dark lavender and purple tones of these flowers, also known as Michaelmas daisies, bring a nice balance to the warm tones of

mums. This flower is a composite flower which is a flower that is made up of multiple smaller flowers. Asters are perennials and will return every year once the plant is established. There are many varieties available which include Blue Wood Aster, Smooth American Aster, Alpine Aster, and the Aromatic Aster just to name a few. These plants are mostly tolerant and adaptable, preferring full sun but will grow in partial shade which allows for a slower bloom time.

Asters bloom from late summer into fall growing in a well-draining soil. The plants range from one to six feet tall and can be staked to support the long stems or pinched back to keep them compact. This plant has a shallow, fibrous root system and is susceptible to root rot if allowed to sit in wet soil. The

blooms have a center that is filled with many small fertile flowers making them very attractive to pollinators, particularly drawing monarch butterflies, helping to improve a gardens ecosystem.

There are varieties of asters that are susceptible to a powdery mildew that attacks the leaves of the plant. The good news is that this mildew will not spread to other plants. If you would rather avoid the chances of mildew on the leaves of your aster plants, you can always choose those asters that are resistant to mildew. A few of the mildew resistant asters include Little Carlow, Frikart’s Aster, the Italian Aster, and the Billowing Pink Aster.

Try your hand at these fall flowering colors today or make some fall discoveries of your own. The colors are there, just waiting to bloom.

About three out of four adults in the United States have a sleep disorder such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or central sleep apnea (CSA). OSA happens when the throat muscles relax and block your airway, which causes you to stop breathing for brief intervals. In CSA, the brain does not send the right signals to the muscles that regulate breathing.

You may not even be aware if you have either of these sleep disorders, but your body keeps the score. Evan Fountain, MD, a board-certified pulmonologist with Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Pulmonary Medicine, suggests seeing a pulmonologist if you experience any of these symptoms:

• Snoring, choking or gasping during sleep

• Unrefreshing sleep

•Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue

• Di iculty concentrating

• Headaches

• Waking with a sore throat

Diagnosing sleep disorders takes time but is essential if you have symptoms. “When untreated, apnea increases your risk of diabetes, heart attack and stroke because it raises blood pressure and stress hormones,” explains Dr. Fountain. And because apnea decreases oxygen to the brain, it raises the risk of dementia, too. Apnea also increases the hormones responsible for hunger, which

The Hidden Dangers of Sleep Apnea

A MAJOR THREAT TO YOUR HEALTH COULD BE HAPPENINGWHEN YOU LEAST SUSPECT IT.

can cause weight gain. Maintaining a healthy weight is one way to lower your risk of developing apnea.

Sleeping with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and mask is the standard treatment, though other options are emerging. “The INSPIRE implant is a wonderful option to treat OSA if you meet the criteria. It involves surgically implanting two nerve stimulation leads in the chest,” says Dr. Fountain. INSPIRE stimulates the hypoglossal nerve which controls movement of the tongue and other airway muscles, allowing the airway to stay open. Dr. Fountain refers interested patients to Sherman Stevenson, MD, an ear, nose and throat specialist and surgeon with Southeast Georgia Health System.

While you don’t have to be overweight to have apnea, excess weight is a major risk factor. “Other risk factors include having a small jaw that is behind the line of your mouth or a larger neck. Age-weakened muscles can also block the airway,” Dr. Fountain explains. Central sleep apnea is associated with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease or a previous stroke. It’s also more common in people with heart failure.

To diagnose apnea, Dr. Fountain reviews the patient’s medical history, performs a physical exam, and orders an at-home sleep study. “You wear a device on your finger or wrist that monitors breathing while you sleep. Even if you test negative, I still order a study at one of our two Sleep Management Centers – a lot of false negatives occur in home studies,” Dr.

Fountain says. In 2024, the FDA authorized a new feature on the Samsung Galaxy watch and phone as being able to detect signs of moderate to severe (OSA) in adults 22 and older. However sophisticated, it’s still not a substitute for a medically supervised sleep study.

Because obesity is a risk factor for OSA, doctors may recommend Wegovy or Ozempic weight loss drugs. “Both reduce the GLP-1 hormone, so you feel fuller longer,” Dr. Fountain says. If a patient might benefit from bariatric (weight loss) surgery, Dr. Fountain refers them to Health System surgeon J. William Tsai, MD.

Sleep studies, CPAP machines, medications or surgery – it’s a lot to consider, except when you consider that apnea impacts every aspect of life. If you have symptoms, invest in your health by seeing a pulmonologist.

The Healing Heat

UNVEILING THE BENEFITS OF INFRARED SAUNAS

In recent years, infrared saunas have surged in popularity, touted as a holistic approach to health and wellness. As an expert in integrative health, I can confidently say that the benefits of these innovative saunas extend far beyond mere relaxation. They offer a myriad of advantages that can enhance both physical and mental well-being.

HOW INFRARED SAUNAS WORK

Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air around you, infrared saunas utilize infrared light to penetrate the skin and raise your body temperature directly. This method allows for a more efficient and deeper heat that can be experienced at lower ambient temperatures, making the experience more tolerable for longer durations.

DETOXIFICATION

One of the primary benefits of infrared saunas is detoxification. Sweating is one of the body’s natural ways to eliminate toxins, and infrared saunas can help you sweat more profusely. Studies have shown that infrared sauna use can significantly increase sweat production, facilitating the excretion of heavy metals and other harmful substances.

PAIN RELIEF + MUSCLE RECOVERY

Athletes and fitness enthusiasts often turn to infrared saunas for their ability to alleviate pain and promote muscle recovery. The heat penetrates deep into the tissues, helping to reduce inflammation and muscle soreness. Many users report relief from conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, attributing their improved mobility and decreased pain levels to regular infrared sauna sessions.

IMPROVED CIRCULATION

Regular use of infrared saunas has also been linked to improved cardiovascular health. The heat increases heart rate and improves circulation, akin to the effects of moderate exercise. This boost in blood flow can aid in lowering blood pressure and enhancing overall heart function, making it an excellent complement to a healthy lifestyle.

STRESS RELIEF + MENTAL WELL-BEING

Beyond physical benefits, the infrared sauna experience offers significant mental health advantages. The calming heat promotes relaxation and can help reduce stress levels. Studies have shown that regular sauna use can lower cortisol levels—the stress hormone—leading to improved mood and a sense of wellbeing. Many users find that spending time in an infrared sauna helps to clear their minds, allowing for deeper meditation and mindfulness practices.

In summary, the health benefits of infrared saunas are backed by both anecdotal evidence and scientific research. From detoxification and pain relief to improved circulation and mental health, incorporating infrared sauna sessions into your wellness routine can offer transformative effects. If you’re ready to experience these incredible health benefits for yourself, state-of-the-art infrared saunas await you at The Club. Enjoy a serene environment designed for relaxation and rejuvenation. Sign up today for a session and take your first step toward enhanced well-being. Embrace the healing heat—your body will thank you!

Guidance for Charitable Giving

THE HOLIDAYS ARE A SEASON OF GIVING. WHETHER GIVING GIFTS OR DONATING MONEY OR TIME, THIS IS HOW WE EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDE BOTH FOR AND TO OTHERS.

It’s when we make charitable donations made to nonprofit organizations that are meaningful to us or give to others by making donations on their behalf. It’s not always as simple as writing a check, however. There may be important financial strategies and tax benefits to consider for maximizing your gifts. It’s also important to be cautious about potential scammers who seek to take advantage of generous individuals especially at this time of year. Here are some tips for choosing your charities:

DONATE LOCALLY.

When considering charities, look first at local nonprofit agencies and organizations. Not only does this have a direct impact in your community, but it also allows you to see exactly how your gifts are used. Here in the Golden Isles, we have more than 100 active charitable organizations, as well as a community foundation that can assist in helping you find the appropriate place for your donations. Food banks, memory care services, educational support, animal rescue, support for families and special needs children are just a handful of the causes you can support in our community.

Choose a cause important to you or the individual for whom you’ll be making the gift so you’ll feel more of a vested interest in the organization.

DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Always ensure that your charities are legitimate by researching the organization. Resources like Charity Navigator and the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search are a good place to start, but you can always turn to Google and social media sites for information, updates on their activities, and reviews. Being cautious will help you avoid fraud. For tax purposes, the IRS not only requires a paper trail to document charitable gift deductions, but that the donee is properly established as a recognized charity.

SEE HOW THEY SPEND.

Once you’re sure you’re giving to a legitimate organization whether on a local or global level, it’s important to learn more about where exactly your dollars go. You should be able to do a search for spending for any 501(c)(3). You want to ensure that money donated is being used effectively for the charitable mission, not

on excessive or extravagant fees or salaries for staff and administration.

MAXIMIZE THE BENEFITS OF YOUR GIFTS.

Talk to your financial advisor or accountant about taking advantage of qualified charitable distributions for tax benefits. This is especially important for retirees over 70 years old. If you’re still employed in the corporate world, see if there are any corporate matching programs that will double your gift.

DETERMINE YOUR DONATION LEVEL.

After you’ve done your research, chosen your charity, and are now ready to make your donation you’ll want to determine how involved with the charitable organization you’d like to be. While you can simply make a one-time donation online, you may choose to become more engaged with the nonprofit’s mission by talking to a representative of the organization about how you can give back and further their cause. This may pave the way for you to volunteer, act as a sponsor for future events, or build the relationship by becoming a regular donor. Now – go do some good!

Born out of a passion for their family and community, JKris After Dark is Corey and Kristin Hoffman’s way of giving some fun and love back to the St. Simons Island community. They wanted to do something special for the groups and individuals on the island who have wrapped their arms around Corey and Kristin’s family many times and who they also consider to be family.

Corey and Kristin have a beautiful story as best friends of 34 years that they will share with a smile on their faces to anyone who will listen. They moved to the island 20 years ago as two young adults with their two beautiful children, daughter Peyton, and son Wyatt. They say that watching the kids grow up and run around the island has been a fun journey. Now that the children are grown, the entire family is immersed in the hair industry, with their children following in their mom’s footsteps.

Kristin says, “We know we are blessed. Corey encouraged me to open JKris 15 years ago. He believes the salon is the center point of our lives. Truth, honesty, and perseverance based on the foundation of family are the values he has laid out before us and watched as we have achieved our goals.”

Kristin is a Master Cosmetologist, American Board Certified Haircolorist, Redken-color, design, blonding specialist, extension certified.

The Best Things Happen After Dark

COME A LITTLE CLOSER…WE WANT TO SHARE SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING HAPPENING AFTER THE SUN GOES DOWN.

She has achieved these degrees throughout the years spent in her career so she can give back to the salon’s guests by being well educated to design the perfect cut and color. She also shares her passion for giving back to the industry by apprenticing new stylists and teaching at the local technical schools. Wyatt is a Master Barber at JKris with plans to marry his future wife Jayda, who is a Master Cosmetologist at the salon. Peyton is currently enrolled in school and will be a Master Cosmetologist by summer.

“When guests come into the salon, we often hear, ‘This place feels so comfortable and happy!’ That’s because we all love what we do,” Kristin explains. “Our family believes in work hard, play hard. You will often see the whole family hanging around local businesses after work. When you see us, we are laughing, playing, and having fun.” That’s what spurred the idea for JKris After Dark parties.

“We want JKris After Dark to be fun gatherings that bring people together to laugh and play with us.” Kristin adds, “We don’t get enough reasons to dress in our sexiest clothes and show off our hair, so we thought we’d create some!” Join the JKris family at Ember’s MAS Lounge on November 16 for the kickoff of JKris After Dark. Drinks will be flowing, the DJ will have the music thumping, and there will be lots of giveaways. This party will be a fundraiser for the three St. Simons Island fire stations. The goal is to restock their kitchens with pots, pans, knives, and other kitchen essentials. “These firemen and women work so hard and sacrifice their family time to be on call at the stations throughout the year, and especially during the

holiday season,” says Kristin. “We want them to have the best kitchen equipment to help them continue to properly nourish their bodies so they can be our lifesavers.”

JKris After Dark will continue to look for different ideas to give back to those who have supported the salon and our community through the years. After the kickoff in November, Kristin says they plan to have these get-togethers every other month, so if you have ideas about providing help in the community, please let them know. The message from the entire JKris family is simple: “We love you, SSI, and can’t wait to see you at MAS on November 16!”

Your Passions Contemporary Artists Launch New Hub

A VIBRANT NEW ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO THE SUPPORT AND PROMOTION OF CONTEMPORARY AND ABSTRACT ART ACROSS THE STATE OF GEORGIA IS OFFICIALLY BEING LAUNCHED IN THE GOLDEN ISLES.

The Contemporary Art Alliance of Georgia (CAAGA) brings together both 2D and 3D artists, offering them a platform to grow, connect, and showcase their work within the local community, regional area, and beyond.

CAAGA has been founded with a clear mission: to establish a thriving community where the practice of contemporary and modern art is not only encouraged but also actively supported. Through fellowship, education, and the exploration of creative techniques and processes, the organization aims to cultivate artists as well as expand public awareness of contemporary and modern art through exhibitions and educational programs. CAAGA seeks to enhance and grow the presence of contemporary art in our community.

Two levels of membership are currently offered: Sustaining Artists and Associate Artists. Sustaining Artists receive full access to all of the organization’s resources, including participation in open studios, critique sessions, and exclusive exhibitions. Associate Artists, while enjoying a more limited set of benefits, are encouraged to grow their skills and presence within the community.

In addition to enhancing and growing the presence of contemporary and modern art in Georgia and beyond, CAAGA has other primary objectives as well. It aims to use the

collective strength of its members to support artists in the development of their artistic pursuits. The organization will also strive to provide educational opportunities that foster growth and innovation in contemporary art.

The Executive Committee of CAAGA is comprised of President & Founder Bettina Dickson Rusher and Daniela Reinshagen, PhD, who handles marketing, communications, and graphic Design. Kevin Pullen acts advisor to the group

The official launch event for CAAGA will be a private, invitation-only art soirée on November 14, where attendees will have the opportunity to view a selection of artwork from all CAAGA members in the elegant setting of a private residence on St. Simons Island. CAAGA’s first public exhibit will take place at Anderson Fine Art Gallery Studio on 100 Sylvan Drive, St. Simons Island, from Thursday, December 12 through Saturday, December 14, and will be open for viewing from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Everyone is invited to attend the opening reception for the public exhibit on Wednesday, December 11 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. This event will be a significant milestone for the organization as it introduces its members’ work to a broader audience. To see more works by CAAGA’s members, learn more about the group, future events and exhibits, or to apply for membership, please visit caaga.art.

As we eagerly await that delicious visit from turkey Tom, it’s time to start polishing our wine glasses (or in my case, dust off the sleeve of red plastic cups). The big holiday feast is near, but what choice to fill your chalice? While turkey and other proteins are tasty, they’re blank canvases in terms of texture and flavor, so a wine nerd’s taste buds begin to tingle and not so fowl thoughts fill the mind. The focus turns to the other dishes on the Thanksgiving buffet: cranberry sauce, sage dressing, mac & cheese, corn pudding. These side dishes are the real unsung heroes of this star-studded show!

Firstly, let’s just go ahead and throw this out into the wine universe: from potato chips to foie gras, bubbles go with almost everything. Sparkling wines often get thrown into a separate wine category, but the reality is that they are — wine! Wine with tiny spheres of joy that are not just for celebration and can be consumed often. All those salty, little snacks before your meal can be accentuated with the delicate white froth of Italy’s most popular sparkling wine, Prosecco. Let’s pour a glass of Zardetto Brut and enjoy the aroma of apricot blossoms, refreshing zing of quince on the palate, and a lingering, fresh tingle. Champagne, Franciacorta, Cava or whatever you want to call it, bubbly should be at the ready any day of the year for any occasion.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS, AND OUR OVENS FINALLY GET THEIR CHANCE TO REVEAL A WARMING GLOW ONCE AGAIN.

Now it is time to up the rigging, take sail and mind the skipper on a pilgrimage to the world of white wine. I generally categorize dry whites in three styles: light, aromatic, or full bodied. A good way to explain the differences in styles it to compare them to their varieties of chicken soup, respectively: consommé, chicken noodle, or cream of chicken. Because many aromatic whites are extremely versatile with white, cured, and marinated meats, or with seafood and rich buttery dishes, an often dismissed and unheralded grape is the first that comes to my mind. Hold on to your capotains (those cool pilgrim hats), because we’re going on an adventure with Gewürztraminer. Surprisingly neither German nor sweet, this Italian grape is grown around the globe where most of its finest examples are fermented to dryness. The confusion about this variety is as justified as the grape name is difficult to pronounce (ga-VERTZ-trah-meener), but a bottle or three of Gewürztraminer from Gundlach-Bundschu (another tonguetwister) on California's Sonoma Coast is a welcome addition to the party. As it fills the air with aromas of grated ginger, you’ll taste the deep flavor of spiced apple and crisp Asian pear. Bonus Somm Recommendation: GarzónAlbariño Reserva - Uruguay

Ready for red? Me too. And once again I fall back on the three-tier variety system: light, medium and full bodied. While there are several aspects that dictate where a red would fall on this scale, the most important one to talk turkey about is tannin. Tannin is that grip you feel on the roof of your mouth and comes

OVENS

from plant material. Grape skins, oak barrels for aging, even the seeds of the grapes all play their part. When pairing red wines with proteins, the first quality I consider is the fat content of the dish. Turkey is lean, but mac & cheese, not so much. A medium bodied red is just what the sommelier ordered to enhance your bounty. A delightful option with moderate tannins would be a glass of Côtes du Rhône (CDR in Somm talk) for a welcomed pairing. The Rhône Valley of France is a historical and iconic area known for its grenache based blends. As one of the Rhône’s premier producers, Guigal’s CDR is packed with scents of grilled plum, dried herbs and the tartness of strawberries. Bonus Somm Recommendation: Sandhi - Pinot Noir - Sta. Rita Hills, California

Not only are the holidays a great time to share time with friends and family but a wonderful opportunity to explore exciting new places in the wine world. If you have yet to experience the bubble blast of Zardetto’s Prosecco, the warm baking spices of Gundlach-Bundschu’s Gewürztraminer, or the red berry blend of Guigal’s Côte du Rhône, here’s your chance to carve a new notch in your wine belt. Of course, as always, I recommend that you drink what you like; but if you’d like assistance elevating your festive turkey day pairings, please stop by JP’s Wine & Spirits with your holiday menu and we will hand select the tastiest wine for your upcoming feast.

Why Choose?

THERE’S NO NEED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN PUMPKIN PIE OR CHEESECAKE FOR A THANKSGIVING DESSERT WHEN YOU CAN ENJOY THESE YUMMY PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE BARS.

Not only will these bars serve more people than a pie or cheesecake alone, they’re no-bake simple and can be made days ahead of time to help free up your holiday schedule!

No Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars

INGREDIENTS:

For the Crust:

13 oz. pkg.crispy ginger snaps

1/2 c.melted butter

1/4 c.light brown sugar

For the Filling:

2 c.heavy cream, whipped and divided

16 oz.cream cheese, softened

15 oz.pumpkin purée

1 c.granulated sugar

1 Tbsp.pumpkin pie spice

1 tsp.vanilla extract

1/2 tsp.salt

PREPARATION:

Line a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with foil or parchment paper. Set aside.

TO MAKE CRUST: Using a food processor or manually, crush ginger snaps into a fine crumb. Add melted butter and sugar to crumbs and combine until mixture is smooth and uniform. If desired, reserve 1/2 c. ginger snap mixture for a garnish. Pour remainder of ginger snap mixture into prepared baking dish. With flat spatula or bottom of a drinking glass, press ginger snap mixture evenly across surface of pan to make a flat crust. Place baking dish in freezer for 10-15 minutes.

TO MAKE FILLING: Use a stand mixer with whip attachment. Add heavy cream to bowl. Whip on high speed until firm, about 3-4 minutes. Separate whipped cream into two equal portions and refrigerate until ready to use. Add cream cheese to bowl. Beat cream cheese until very smooth. Add pumpkin purée, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla extract, and salt. Continue to beat filling mixture until completely smooth with no clumps. Scrape bowl and beat again if needed. Remove bowl from stand mixer. Add half of the whipped cream to cheesecake filling. Gently fold mixture with a spatula until completely smooth. Be careful not to over stir. Remove baking dish from freezer. Spoon pumpkin cheesecake filling into dish. Smooth filling over crust in an even layer. If you reserved ginger snap crumbs for garnish, sprinkle over the top as heavily or as lightly as you prefer. Cover baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight, to create a firm filling. To speed up this process, you can freeze cheesecake bars for 1-2 hours, then move pan to refrigerator to soften filling for serving.

**To make bars ahead of time, if tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, the pan of pumpkin cheesecake bars can be refrigerated for 4-5 days. To freeze for later use, wrap the pan in plastic wrap and then a layer of aluminum foil, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw pan in refrigerator overnight before serving.

When ready to serve, cut cheesecake bars into squares. Top each square with a dollop of reserved whipped cream or pipe the whipped cream on if you prefer it to be more decorative. Sprinkle with additional pumpkin pie spice if desired.

Santo Domingo, Glynn County’s Lost State Park

On November 22, 1935, officials and guests gathered at a site north of Brunswick to dedicate Santo Domingo State Park. Attendees listened to speeches by local proponents of the park, officials from the Department of the Interior, and an Army general. At the ceremony, Cator Woolford, the donor of the site, presented the deed to Eugene Talmadge, the governor of Georgia. The festivities seemed to predict a bright future for Georgia’s newest state park.

Santo Domingo State Park was so named for a Spanish mission which was once believed to have occupied the site. The Spanish first established a string of missions in Georgia in the sixteenth century, hoping to convert the native Timucua and Guale people to Catholicism. Santo Domingo was abandoned by 1685 due to a rapidly declining Timucua and Guale population and raids on the mission system by both Native Americans and pirates.

By the early 1800s, the land that would become Santo Domingo State Park was owned by Dr. Robert Grant, who operated it as a sugar and rice plantation named Elizafield. The grounds housed many tabby buildings, including rice and sugar mills. The Grant family

evacuated Elizafield during the Civil War and never returned to live there. Over the following decades, the property fell into disrepair.

When the ruins of Elizafield’s tabby structures were rediscovered, several historians, including Brunswick native and author Mary Ross, theorized that they were part of the lost Santo Domingo mission. This exciting idea led to the creation of Santo Domingo State Park in 1935. Just two years later, historian E. Merton Coulter published a work which correctly identified the ruins as Elizafield’s sugar mill.

Within a decade, Glynn County had lost its only state park. J. Ardell Nation purchased the land from the state of Georgia in 1945 and founded an orphanage for boys there. Today, the area surrounding the former Santo Domingo State Park is still known as Boys Estate.

This month’s images from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society include the program for the dedication of Santo Domingo State Park and a postcard of the rice mill chimney at Elizafield Plantation.

Coastal Georgia Historical Society presents this article and images from our archives as part of our mission “to connect people to Coastal Georgia’s dynamic history.” The Society operates the iconic St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and the World War II Home Front Museum, housed in the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach.
