~Jekyll Island~

Jekyll Island turns into “Holiday Island” during the Christmas season. On November 26, ring in the holidays with the lighting of the great tree in Jekyll Island’s Historic District. Celebrate this merry and bright season with fun for the whole family – carriage rides, toasting marshmallows for s’mores, kids’ crafts, live music, and pictures with Santa.

Once the sun goes down, the magic sets in as the tree is lit, accompanied by fireworks and snow! It’s the perfect way to get into the spirit of the season! The night before, there’s a special holiday Movies on the Green showing of Elf. Come sing and smile with Buddy, it’ll be YOUR favorite too! There’s also oceanfront “ice” skating at Jekyll Island’s Skating Village between November and January. Skate rentals, concessions, and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean!

The cottages of the historic district will be decorated for the season for daily Holidays in History tours. Experience the glittering world of the Jekyll Island Club dressed up in its holiday finery! This year, there are also Christmas Twilight Tours that include a showcase of historic Faith Chapel’s stained glass masterpiece “Adoration of the Christ Child” and include music and light refreshments at Indian Mound Cottage.

At Goodyear Cottage beginning November 26, the Jekyll Island Arts Association will present the Merry Artists Show & Sale, a festive show and sale of small works and other art items suitable and affordable as holiday gifts or decorations with all items priced under $150. Through the month of December, The Westin Jekyll Island will be presenting “A Gingerbread Holiday” with special displays and events. And of course, Santa will be making appearances at Crane Cottage and at other locations on the island in preparation for his big night. For detailed information on all of the holiday happenings at Jekyll Island, visit jekyllisland.com and check out their event calendar.

5K & F U N RU N

The morning of Saturday, December 3, Great Dunes Park on Jekyll Island will be filled with sounds of jingle bells, but it won’t be Santa’s team of reindeer coming to call! That will be the sound of happy runners as they participate in the 6th Annual CASA Jingle All the Way 5K & Fun Run. The 5K Run/Walk begins at 9:00 a.m., and the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk gets started at 10:00 a.m. The 5K race is timed and awards are presented to the team with the most members, most holiday spirit – both team and individual, overall male and female finishers, overall masters male and female finishers, and the top three male and female finishers in each age group for the 5K race. In addition, there is a $1,000 cash award to the school’s PTA with the most entrants (anyone who lists the school on their registration form) pre-registered for either Mile run or the 5K. HOLIDAY MARKET CRAFT FAIR

Lord of Life Lutheran Church is busy preparing for its eighth annual Holiday Market Craft Fair, which will be held at 2801 Frederica Road on Saturday, December 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual event hosts over thirty vendors, both indoor and outdoor, who sell quality handmade wares including pottery, artwork, glasswork, jewelry, baby and children’s gift items, cute things for pets, cement outdoor art, holiday items, aprons and kitchenware, one of a kind totes, knitted and crocheted items, and many other interesting gift ideas. Nancy Day, children’s book author, will be available to sign her books. “Flavor of Georgia” winner Rockingham Pecans will sell their fried pecans and candies. The Blueberry Barn, from Alma, will be at the event for their third year to sell a variety of blueberry products. In addition, the church will host a bake sale and a used book sale. Coffee and breakfast snacks and lunch will be served. Outstanding raffle prizes include restaurant gift cards, specialty gift baskets and a hand-crafted woodwork item donated by Paul Speich, member of the Golden Isles Woodworkers. Door prizes, donated by our vendors, are awarded every hour. Committee chairperson, Renée Evenson Balka says, “It’s hard to believe this is our eighth annual Holiday Market Craft Fair. We are so proud that our fair has become well-known in our community. Our neighbors throughout the Golden Isles look forward to this event. We are also proud that every year we have returning vendors along with new ones to showcase their handcrafted and specialty items. We always provide shoppers with a wide variety of gift ideas for the holidays. Santa Claus spends the day so this is a great photo op for families. We are thankful for our many volunteers who work hard to make this an enjoyable day for everyone and we look forward to welcoming our visitors.” Proceeds benefit Lord of Life Youth Camp Scholarship Fund and other church, social ministry, and outreach programs in our community. Pastor Bonnie Lanyi says, “Last year was my first year as Lord of Life’s new pastor to experience this fun event. Funds were raised to help send our young people to camp. They came home from camp with many stories about how their lives were changed for the better in significant ways. Also, funds were used to care for people in our community who found themselves in dire need. God is so good and provides. This is one way we are able to reach out and serve those in need, and impact the community in positive ways. Thank you to all who support this event!” For additional information call 912.638.4673. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Lord of Life Lutheran Church is also helping provide gifts to children in need for Christmas by serving as a Collection Center (continues)

during National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child in November. Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse, a non-denominational Christian organization that supports a variety of ministries, has distributed over 130 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 150 countries or territories around the world in Jesus’ Name. OCC is the world’s largest Christmas project of this kind. They delivered over 20 million shoeboxes to children in over 100 countries in the last three years. This year, they hope to collect enough shoebox gifts to reach another 14 million children. Every shoebox gift is an expression of God’s love that brings joy and the Good News of Jesus Christ to a child in need. Additionally, many of the children are enrolled in a 12-lesson discipleship course, The Greatest Journey. Many of these children are coming to Christ as they study the lessons. This ministry not only spreads the Gospel abroad but also locally. Lord of Life has shoeboxes available if needed or you could simply pack a shoebox from your closet. Items that go in the shoeboxes are specified for a girl or boy, ages 2-4, ages 5-9 or ages 1014. Examples of what to buy are hair brushes, soap and washcloth, toothbrushes and toothpaste, toys, games, puzzles, books, stuffed animal, jump rope, balls, flip flops or shoes, pencils and notebook paper, markers or crayons, socks, hats, pajamas, shirt, etc. Basically anything that you can fit in a shoebox that a child in need could use is acceptable. What a great way to start the holiday season! The church, located at 2801 Frederica Road, will be open for anyone to drop off shoeboxes during the following hours: Monday-Friday,

November 14-20 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 5-7:00 p.m.; Saturday, November 19, 9-11:00 a.m. and 2-4:00 p.m.; Sunday, November 20, 122:00 p.m. and 4-7:00 p.m.; and Monday, November 21, 9:3011:30 a.m. If you would like to volunteer counting shoeboxes and packing cartons, please call Lord of Life at 912.638.7431 because many hands make light work.

~Messiah~

The holiday concert not to miss! The Golden Isles Community Chorus will present its annual performance of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah, Part I” at Wesley United Methodist Church, Frederica on Saturday, December 3 at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. The Christmas portion of Handel’s beloved oratorio includes choir, organ, soloists, and orchestra. It’s a rather epic undertaking: the community choir consists of 90 members plus soloists who represent 35 area churches, and they are accompanied by an orchestra. This has been a Golden Isles tradition for more than three decades and it continues for good reason. The performance is always phenomenal and will fill you with the spirit of the season. For more information, visit wesleyssi.org/concerts. (continues)

~Mistletoe Market~

The Mistletoe Market Holiday Arts & Crafts Festival presented by Glynn Visual Arts will take place Saturday and Sunday, December 3-4 in Postell Park on St. Simons Island. This fine art and gift market is in its sixth year and has become a mainstay of the Golden Isles’ holiday festivities. The yarn-bombers will decorate just for the occasion! For the second year, local knitters will be turning Postell Park into its own work of art! Throughout the year they have been working away and will reveal their beautiful work at the opening of the festival. The colorful decorations will only remain in the park for this festival weekend. “This year, we expect over 60 accomplished artists and artisans offering a wide array of quality artwork including two dimensional art, pottery, jewelry, sculpture, photography, woodworking, baskets, fabric and mixed media.” says festival director Hannah Roberts. “This show combines fine art, fabulous gifts, great food, entertainment & family fun in a festive Island holiday atmosphere. It is the perfect opportunity for residents and visitors alike to find that one-of-a-kind purchase or gift for the holiday season. As an added bonus, when you buy something handmade, purchased directly from the artist, you are supporting small business and the local community.” In addition to the vendors, there will be some holiday-themed family entertainment and activities scheduled. There will be a Holiday Hound Hike, where local pooches (and maybe even a potbellied pig!) will get all dressed up in their holiday best and put on a parade to celebrate the season. There will be a Kid’s Creation Station to entertain the smallest artists with free holiday themed craft activities. Some of our favorite local celebrities will be providing live music. And no holiday festival would be complete without a visit from Santa! Plan to come out to the village and take part in the fun! For more information, visit glynnvisualarts.org. (continues)
