Micleínn Aosach Lánaimseartha Ionad Forbartha Réigiúnach Comhthaisteal do DkIT Treoir an Choláiste

Welcome

Fáilte Mar mhac léinn ionchais ar chúrsa páirtaimseartha in Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Dhún Dealgan (ITDD), iarraim ort machnamh faoi chlárú ar cheann den iliomad clár ar a bhfuil cur síos san réamheolaire seo.

Our programmes range from short duration skills or vocational oriented courses to longer duration programmes that lead to full awards. Whether your motivation is just to learn something new or gain new skills and to get a recognised qualification you will find that DkIT, through its Lifelong Learning Centre, will provide you with a full range of supports through the duration of your studies here.

Síneann réimse ár gclár ó chúrsaí gearra scileanna nó gairm oideachais go dtí cláir níos faide dírithe ar cháiliúcháin iomlána. Pé acu do inspreagadh, rud nua a f hoghlaim, scileanna nua a bhaint amach, nó cáilíocht aitheanta a f háíl, feicfidh tú go gcuirfidh ITDD, tríd an Ionaid um Fhoghlaim ar feadh an tSaoil, lán tacaíocht ar fáil duit le linn do chuid staidéir anseo.

Some of you will be considering coming back to college having been away from formal education for some time. If you are in this situation please be assured that our Institute recognises that this can be a major challenge and we will work with you in readjusting to the world of learning. You will find that the biggest issue is in making the actual decision to return to study. In fact, many students have made the initial decision to return to education through the lifelong learning/part-time course pathway and then move into full-time programmes.

Beidh cuid agaibh ag machnamh ar f hilleadh ar choláiste tar éis tamaill gan oideachas foirmiúil. Más amhlaidh duit, bí cinnte go n-aithníonn ár nInstitiúid an dúshlán mór atá ann. Oibreoimid leat agus tú ag dul in ath-thaithí ar shaol na foghlama. Feicfidh tú gurb é an cheist is mó ná an cinneadh ar f hilleadh chun staidéir. Go deimhin, cineann mórán mac léinn filleadh ar oideachas trí chasán na foghlama ar feadh an tsaoil, nó cúrsa páirtaimseartha, agus leanann ansin isteach i gcláir lánaimseartha.

Enrolling on a lifelong learning programme means becoming a part of the DkIT community. That means participating not just in the classroom or laboratory but making use of the range of facilities available on our campus. I greatly encourage you to make full use of the amenities here and became an active member of our community. A key service provided to our students is the library and you will find the staff there only too willing to introduce you to the services, including online options, that they provide.

Is ionann clárú ar chlár foghlama ar feadh an tsaoil agus teacht isteach i bpobal ITDD. Ciallaíonn sin ní hamháin rannpháirtíocht sa seomra ranga agus sa saotharlann, ach leas a bhaint as saoráidí uile an champais. Gríosaim tú lán úsáid a bhaint as na háiseanna anseo agus bheith i do bhall gníomhach dár bpobal. Seirbhís tábhachtach a chuirtear ar fáil dár mic léinn ná an leabharlann agus feicfidh tú lán-toilteanas na mball foirne ansin na seibhísí a sholáithríonn siad, roghanna ar líne ina measc, a chur ós do chomhair.

So I encourage you to take the decision now to return to study at DkIT and become a member of our lifelong learning community.

Mar sin spreagaim tú cinneadh a dhéanamh anois filleadh ar staidéar in ITDD agus bheith i do bhall dár bpobal foghlama ar feadh an tsaoil.

Springboard

What is Springboard? Springboard is a government initiative managed by the HEA on behalf of the Department of Education and Skills. It provides thousands of free part-time education and training opportunities on 205 courses in educational institutions nationwide for people who are unemployed but looking for work while also allowing them to keep any unemployment benefits they are eligible for.

There is NO requirement to be in receipt of a payment for a particular period of time prior to the commencement of a programme. Participants in receipt of an eligible payment at the time the Springboard course commences are eligible to apply for a place on that course. However, providers will be required to give priority to applications from people who are long term unemployed.

Am I Eligible to Apply?

OR

To be eligible for a place on a Springboard 2013 programme a person must (in addition to any academic criteria stated in the course description) be unemployed with a previous history of employment AND satisfy one of the following three criteria.

2

1

16

Be in receipt of one of the following payments from the Department of Social Protection: • Jobseekers Benefit • Jobseekers Allowance • Back to Work Enterprise Allowance • One Parent Family Allowance • Carers Allowance • Farm Assist/Fish Assist • Widow(er)s Contributory or Non-contributory Pension • Blind Pension • Deserted Wives Allowance

Be signing for social insurance contribution credits

OR

3

Be previously self-employed AND be actively seeking employment. To participate in a NFQ Level 9 (Post Graduate) course, a period of at least one year must have elapsed since completing a full-time undergraduate degree programme leading to a major award at level 8 on the NFQ. For the purposes of determining eligibility for Springboard the term “unemployed” also includes people who are on short term working and in receipt of a Jobseekers payment from the Department of Social Protection.

Do I Keep my Benefits if I do a Springboard Course? Springboard participants who are already in receipt of a Department of Social Protection income support payment may be able to retain such payments. Through the Part-time Education Option (PTEO), jobseekers in receipt of Jobseekers Benefit (JB) or Jobseekers Allowance (JA) who wish to pursue a part-time day or evening course of education may retain their payment subject to continuing to meet the eligibility conditions, including being available for and genuinely seeking work. If a payment is due to cease prior to the end of a course, payment cannot be extended past the due cessation date. Prior to commencing any Springboard course participants in receipt of JB or JA should contact their local D/SP office to make an application to retain their payment under the PTEO. Participants in receipt of other forms of income support payment from the Department of Social Protection must contact the appropriate scheme area in that Department to confirm if they may retain such payments while on the programme.

Welcome / Fáilte

By gaining a qualification through the Springboard initiative you can open more doors and create a brighter future Regardless of your level of education or how many years’ experience you have working in your field, adding further qualifications to your CV will undoubtedly make you stand out at your next job interview. Not only do further qualifications keep you up to date in developments in your area, they also display a willingness to

18

learn and can open the door to applying for jobs for which you were not previously qualified. It was for these reasons that Brendan Ward decided to undertake a course in Dundalk IT through the Springboard initiative. “I had never actually qualified as a plumber but I worked for over 20 years plumbing and building houses,” says Brendan. “I was made redundant in 2009 and decided that I needed to learn an extra set of skills to improve my chances of finding another job.”

Brendan searched the courses available locally in Dundalk IT and found that the course that appealed to him, a Certificate in Sustainable Heating and Plumbing, was available through Springboard. Brendan is confident that his new qualification will aid him in securing future employment as he now has a greater understanding of recent developments in renewable energy and solar heating to add to his many years of practical experience.

Applying for the course was very straightforward,” he concludes. “The whole process was very simple and my application was approved within a few days. I would definitely recommend Springboard courses.

Find a brighter future at Dundalk IT

“I really think that this will improve my employability because it has allowed me to upskill and to really understand current technology. On courses that I completed in the past I recognised that a good understanding of computers and technology was just as important as being good at maths.

Welcome / Fáilte

which I had never seen before and which suited me perfectly. I chose the H Dip in Computing because I have a strong maths background and I thought the course was a good fit for me – it was my area.

The whole process of applying for the course was very simple,” concludes Ann,“ and I would recommend the Springboard initiative and Dundalk IT to anyone who feels that they could benefit from a further qualification.

Reboot your career with Springboard Ann Osborne O’Hagan added to her teaching ability with the use of the Springboard initiative and Dundalk Institute of Techology County Louth-based Ann originally qualified as a secondary school teacher. While she worked mainly as a substitute teacher for a number of years she was careful to keep all of her qualifications up to date by registering with the Teaching Council and completing Project Maths – a programme designed for out-of-field maths teachers.

But despite these efforts, when Ann needed a full-time job there were none to be had. “I heard about the Springboard initiative through the media and on the radio,” explains Ann. “I searched for it on the internet and when I found it I looked through all the courses to decide what would suit me best.” Ann’s availability to undertake a course was dictated by her six children as she knew she would be unable to travel to Dublin on a regular basis. But she was delighted to learn that Springboard courses are offered throughout the country. “I found a course in Dundalk IT on the Springboard website

This course is unique in that, unlike existing computing conversion courses that prepare graduates for a career in a traditional technical software development role (e.g. software programmer), this course prepares graduates for careers in the business related areas of computing. Focusing on these less technical and more people-centred roles makes the course ideally suited to graduates with non-computing primary degrees. Subjects Studied: • Core Computing 1 and 2 • Software Engineering • Web Development • Software Design Fundamentals • Database Management Systems • Software Testing • Software Project Management Specialisations are offered in Business Computing, Healthcare Computing or e-Learning.

Course Fees The programme provides them with the knowledge and expertise for a career in: • Quality Assurance and Software Testing • Software Project Management The programme doesn’t attempt to convert graduates from non-computing disciplines within one year to software developers, although some of our graduates have succeeded in this. Introduction

Course Content

This programme is a partnership between Dundalk IT’s Department of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Studies and the Netwell Centre (www.netwellcentre.org). The programme philosophy stems from the beliefs that ageing is a positive life event and that older people benefit when communities and older people services are designed to be age-friendly. Older people are affected in many ways by how and where they live. Their ability to participate in the social, economic and cultural life of a community or residential care setting and their physical and psychological health and well being are determined by the environment in which they live. The programme aims, through eclectic teaching and learning methods and work-based learning, to develop and enhance the student’s knowledge and skills in working with older people. Specifically, the programme aims to develop reflective, knowledgeable and critically thinking professionals who will use a person-centered approach to practice and act as positive change agents in older person care in community and residential care settings. The focus on a practice innovation project as the research project for the Masters Programme affords the opportunity for the student to identify a real issue in their work environment and using the skills obtained in the programme to

Mature Students Entry to Full-Time Programmes at DkIT Micleínn Aosach Lánaimseartha DkIT welcomes mature applications to our full-time programmes. An applicant 23 years of age or over on 1st January in the year of application can be considered as a mature applicant. Mature students make a very positive contribution to the Institute and they now represent 20% of first-year entrants onto our full time programmes. The learning environment benefits from the life and work experience that mature students bring into the lecture room. We offer an induction session tailored to the needs of incoming mature students in addition to general induction events. This is an opportunity to meet staff and support services providers, and also to meet other mature students who are starting third level study at the same time. A variety of learning supports are also available post-entry to ensure that mature students reach their full academic potential. It is important that a mature applicant makes an informed choice in relation to a proposed programme of study. Academic staff members are available to meet with potential applicants and to answer questions about a programme of study in their department. This is also an opportunity for applicants to assess what level of prior academic or work experience is required in relation to particular programmes. The advantage of availing of the mature entry route is that it takes applicants out of the ‘points race’. Mature applicants are generally interviewed as part of the application process. At the interview the following is taken into account for each applicant: • education record • employment history – paid and unpaid including voluntary work, and its relevance to the programme • motivation • level of preparedness for their course • any other relevant skills

88

Please note that all applications must be made to the CAO (www.cao.ie) by 1st February each year. Further information is available at www.dkit.ie/mature or by contacting the Access Officer, Eileen Lynch. (eileen.lynch@dkit.ie / 042 9370236) Prospective mature applicants are encouraged to research their programme of choice well in advance of application. We look forward to hearing from you!

Innovation for Competitive Enterprises (ICE)

Accelerating Campus Entrepreneurship (ACE)

Promoting regional economic growth and development through the establishment of a Tri-Regional Innovation Network aimed at building the innovation capacity and capability of existing SMEs in Northern Ireland, the southern Border Region of Ireland and Western Scotland. The project is a joint collaboration of University of Ulster, University of Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian University and led by Dundalk Institute of Technology.

Initiative is aimed at creating the entrepreneurial graduate. It provides innovative approaches to entrepreneurship education to ensure students from non-business programmes take enterprise related modules with the student gaining experience of what it is like to run and operate real businesses and in this way promoting self-employment as a real, attractive and viable career option.

Success Through Succession (STS) Family Business Project aims to strategically assist family owned and family related SMEs to manage the challenges of succession and to increase innovation, growth and competitiveness using a series of interventions. Both the STS and ICE projects are part-funded by the EU INTERREG IVA Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body with match funding contribution from Scottish Enterprise.

The Student Enterprise Internship Programme is now entering its sixth year of operation. The cross-campus SEI Programme supports student entrepreneurs and aims to engage students in enterprise activities in a practical and fun way. The Bright Ideas Programme supports this initiative through the provision of a four week programme of support aimed at DkIT Students to help them assess the commercial feasibility of their business ideas.
