Neue Deutsche Härte
MEMBERS Because it was so strange to see that the name like that is existing. You know, with the two «o»s and the exclamation mark at the end. It was strange, you know, the visual aspect and pronunciation. And, you know, it’s always good to have a name where somebody is like «What was that?» You know, if your band name is like, I dunno, ‘Toilet 2, 3, 4’ it’s, it’s, I dunno... Your name has to be special. And this is a special name, definitely. Dero Goi
DERO GOI lead vocalist Dero Goi was born in Wolfsburg on 16. April. 1970. He also grew up in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony with his current bandmate Crap. They lived in the same tenement housing department and both started playing music in grade school. They built «instruments» with Persilpacks. Dero and Crap met Flux at an Industrial Festival. They found out that they liked the same kind of music and wanted to start a band, which would combine the Rock and the Electro scene. Thus OOMPH! was born.

Crap grew up in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, with his old friend Dero. He has known Dero for 25 years. They lived in the same rental house and played together in the sand. He had his first guitar at age 7 and the age of 10 or 11 began to make music (for not telling him noise) with cardboard boxes, drums and a large number of self-assessment instruments made. His first band was called ÂŤPhazeÂť (next to Dero) and it was really bad, at that time he had a synthesizer and he had already turned 15 years old.
Robert Flux grew up in Salzgitter, Germany. At age 11 he went to Wolfsburg. His grandmother played instruments (singing and piano), and his family supported him from his youth on the same subject. At age 14 he took his first guitar lessons (classical). At 16 he bought his first electric guitar and played in the school bands. Listening to Depeche Mode and DAF discovered the synthesizer. He had his first synthesizer as a gift from his grandmother, so he tried to combine synthesizer and guitar.

biography
OOMPH! are pioneers, visionaries, artists. For a quarter of a century they’ve been following their own musical path. On their journey they were never afraid of fusing any influences with their very own version of hard Rock music. This courage was rewarded with an own

niche between Metal, Industrial, EBM and Gothic as well as with Gold and Platinum Awards. For years their new albums have been storming the charts, the single «Augen Auf!» even reached number 1. Despite their German lyrics they also made a lot of noise in the USA. This year OOMPH! celebrate their 25th birthday – with a new album and four anniversary concerts. OOMPH! being on top of German Rock music is the result of lots of hard work and fearless creativity. In 1990 DERO (Vocals, Drums), CRAP (Guitars, Keyboards) and FLUX (Guitars, Samples) founded OOMPH! in Wolfsburg – and shaped a new musical scene in Germany with Bands like Rammstein, who later named OOMPH! as one of their influences. Even back then OOMPH! were ground-breaking, because they mixed different styles and genres, while at the same time they weren’t afraid

Dero Goi 16 April 1970
FOR ME, MUSIC IS A TOOL that allows me to cast out all my inner demons, because music itself is a cure. I’m very happy that I’m a musician, not a serial killer, for example, but at the same time I’m glad that I have a personal life that is very different from the public life of a musician, it allows me to stand firmly on my feet. It is important for me to have friends who are not connected with music.

music is my life THE WAY TO MUSIC Certainly it was no matter of heredity, because my family is totally unmusicial. Sometime I started to take guitar lessons, later piano lessons. The most I learned by myself.
THE BEST ADVICE ONE CAN GIVE Decide things with feeling, even if you have to brood over for a long time. Enjoy your life! Most beautiful literaturequotation: All that glitters is not gold.
the way together The musician’s real name is Gonnas Deppner. I know Dero for 25 years. We lived in the same tenement house and played together in the sandpit. At the age 10 or 11 we started to make music (let’s call it noise) with cardboard boxes, persil-drums and a lot of self-made instruments. In 1987 I meet Flux. He also lived in Wolfsburg and started things similarly. Here and there a band, but it was never the right track. We immediately got along with each other and all of us were of the opinion that we had to do something completely different. Two years later OOMPH! came into being.

ROBERT FLUX 5 May 1967
fLUX IS A SYNTHESIS THE WAY TO MUSIC The musician’s real name is Rene Bahman. At the age of 5, Flux discovered music, helped by his «musicial» grandmother, who sang and played the piano. The first musician idol of the little Flux was Suzi Qatro. According to Flux himself: «There are photos that depict my first experiments in music - I’m standing in front of a Christmas tree with my children’s guitar and very diligently portray Suzi Quatro.»
THE WAY TOGETHER In 1989 we meet on a local indie-festival in Wolfsburg. Crap and Dero knew each other already from the sandpit, because they grew up in the same block of flats. We immediately got along with each other and we all had the aim to do music as a job.
THE BEST ADVICE ONE CAN GIVE Don’t give any advices, but try to do things better yourself!
IN THE GERMAN CITY OF WOLFSBURG, THE FUTURE FOUNDERS OF THE OOMPH! GROUP MET AT A SMALL INDIE FESTIVAL. THEY WERE THREE GUYS: DERO, CRAP, FLUX.
EARLY YEARS Oomph! incorporated many styles of music such as metal, industrial, alternative rock, electronica and gothic to create their sound. Their style changed between their self-titled debut, Oomph! (album) (1992), and its successor Sperm (1994). Though they started with very much a danceladen industrial sound, they quickly moved to a much more heavily guitar-driven metal sound, while still acknowledging their electronic roots. This guitar-driven and electronic accompanied sound inspired numerous musicians, most famously Rammstein, Megaherz, and Eisbrecher, to follow their lead. Oomph! released their first album on Jor’s Machinery label, then releasing their consecutive albums on its sister label Dynamica. They stayed with Jor, until his labels disappeared during the acquisition by Sanctuary Records at around 1996/1997. Oomph! finally signed on Virgin Schallplatten. Between 1998 and 2001, they released three albums on the Virgin label. The first, Unrein, was released in 1998, which became their debut album in the Media Control Charts, peaking at No. 37, and the Austrian top 40 at No. 38. A single called «Gekreuzigt» was released in 1998 to promote Unrein and became the band’s debut single on the German charts, peaking at No. 81.
The second Virgin album, Plastik, was released in 1999 and peaked in Germany at No. 23. The third, Ego, was released in 2001, peaking at No. 21 in the Media Control Charts. This fulfilled their contract with Virgin; the band did not continue with the record company, feeling that it never fully explored their potential. With the benefits of major-label status, however, Oomph! gained a larger following and toured with labelmates Skunk Anansie in 1999, later opening for the Finnish rock band HIM in fall 2001. In 2002, Oomph! played at the Ozzfest in Germany, alongside Black Label Society, Tool and Ozzy Osbourne on May 20. The band appeared at the With Full Force Festival on July 5, 2002. On December 19, 2002, Oomph! opened for Apoptygma Berzerk.
In 2004, Oomph! released their first single «Augen Auf!» («Open your Eyes!») on a new label, this time on Supersonic Records, part of the Sony BMG group of music companies, from their eighth album Wahrheit oder Pflicht. It marks their first number one hit in Germany, thus eventually bringing forth their major commercial breakthrough. The album hit number 2 in the Media Control Charts. In June 2004, Oomph! played at two major European music festivals: the Dynamo Open Air Festival on June 5, in the Netherlands and on June 25 at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium. «Augen auf!» became part of the FIFA 2005 soundtrack. Oomph! appeared for the first time at Wacken Open Air on August 4, 2005. The band’s ninth album, GlaubeLiebeTod (FaithLoveDeath) was released in March 2006, including the controversial single Gott ist ein Popstar! («God is a Popstar!»), its follow-up Das letzte Streichholz, Die Schlinge and Träumst Du?. In August 2006, Virgin released the compilation album 1998-2001: Best of Virgin Years. It contains tracks from Oomph!’s three Virgin albums as well as a few unreleased tracks. The band distanced itself from this best-of release and asked that fans not buy it, as the band’s current label GUN had scheduled a best-of compilation as well. On June 15, 2006, Oomph! played at the Nova Rock Festival in Austria. On December 1, 2006, Oomph!’s official best-of album, Delikatessen (Delicacies) was released under the GUN label. The songs on it were hand-picked by the band itself. It contains tracks from all nine Oomph! albums, b-sides, remixes and never-heard before tracks like «The Power of Love» and «Gekreuzigt’06». By November 17, 2006, Oomph! released those two songs in a form of double single to promote the new compilation release.
WAHRHEIT ODER PFLICHT AND GLAUBE LIEBE TOD
On February 9, 2007, the band released their final GlaubeLiebeTod single – «Träumst Du?», featuring the female vocalist from Die Happy, Marta Jandová. The single peaked at number 9 in the media control charts. Oomph! performed the song live the same day at the 2007 edition of Bundesvision Song Contest, representing Lower Saxony in the competition, coming in first place. On July 6, 2007, Oomph! opened for Metallica in Vienna, Austria. Oomph!’s first DVD was Rohstoff, which contains live footage consisting of 23 songs, most of the videos the band has created, making-of videos, and an exclusive interview. The DVD was released on July 20, 2007.
