Syria Post-War Housing

ENDLESS FUTURE

11

LOCATION Aleppo (Syria) PROJECT TYPE post-war housing strategy PROMOTER Matterbetter Association TEAM Elena Guidetti Alfredo De Luca Giulia Gorgo Marta Gayoso Heredia DESCRIPTION The main goal of the proposal is to provide a flexible settlement system to be used in several urban contexts, either that be the center of Aleppo or the outskirt area of Damascus, in order to build what would be the urban fabric of the new city after the civil war. The big amount of destroyed or highly damaged parts of Syrian cities gives the chance to put forward a solution for the transition between the Islamic urban pattern and the latest century one, an unsolved problem that involves Syrian cities as much as others from the Islamic world. The chosen site in the city of Aleppo was taken just as a case of study because of his significant position which resumes the clash of the organic Islamic city with the straight streets carved into the historic pattern by European plans. These considerations explain the proposal of two different ways to assemble the housing units and to interface with the two different urban spaces. The challenge of the project is to guarantee the privacy of the family unit with high density dwellings. Every housing unit is provided of a small patio that, despite the 3/4 stories organization, is hidden by strangers’ sigh, as required in the traditional Islamic house. The housing modules are designed to be built mainly with 5 concrete precast elements to put together in situ with a low-budget construction yard. 5

Island of Art

TAKE A WALK ON THE ART SIDE LOCATION Venice (Italy) PROJECT TYPE Island of Arts PROMOTER IOA TEAM Elena Guidetti Giulia Gorgo Marta Gayoso Heredia DESCRIPTION This project is a synthesis, in an urban scale intervention, to showcase the concept about the relationship between all types of art and the intense connection between them and the user. The user is presented as principal character on the premise “art because of and for the public”. Basic tools that configure this proposal are: access points, stages, labs and boardwalks. All distributed in a strategic way, involving the proposed route between Piazza San Marco, Canal Grande and Parco della Rimembranza, cohesively binding Carnaval tradition and Architectural Biennial. Through access points, urban pattern and project become successfully connected; stages are suggested as big spaces, able to house music, theatre and dance representations, painting, photography, sculpture or architecture exhibitions, which can be transformed to close spaces when needed, making the projection of audiovisual and film material or architectonical lectures possible. Labs are responsible for connecting and articulating stages disposition, and have restrooms, clothing, technical areas and creation spaces, covering every artist necessity. Boardwalks connect the previously described areas, generating a natural and organic relationship with the existing activity and culture. The architecture becomes a space for action, a route which configures the basic tools to make the art appear, through the user. Topography, accesses, environment, and the user are the premises that configure the proposal basement. It is about an itinerary that intensifies the idea of “art as a visual language”, as a way for description and representation. 11

[ PortoAcademy Workshop] 2016

Combining Singularities

CASCADE LOCATION Oporto (Portugal) PROJECT TYPE investigate theorical spaces PROMOTER Porto Academy ADVISOR Arch. Piet Eckert (2EA) TEAM

Elena Guidetti Katarzyna Zaczek

DESCRIPTION _COMBINING SINGULARITIES The studio investigates formal and spatial generative specificities of Oporto and engages such discoveries in an interpreted form of architecture. A discovered specificity encounters the normative expression of form; it becomes an ingredient to inform a standard, a building typology, a generic condition. Ingredient and standard generate a hybrid relation. They casually relate to each other and are more than the sum of all its parts. Mix, assembly, arrangement and composition of the known and the discovered obtain a new singularity, in which the parts are recognisable, but no longer restorable. _CASCADE The dimensions of space are indicative for a degree of public realm. The long and narrow cascades transgress the deep body of the city. Though being publicly accessible they appear as an intimate, “interior outdoor spaces. The project develops a cascadian space of interrelations and connections. 15

TWISTER LOCATION Tara National Park, Mitrovac (Serbia) PROJECT TYPE panoramic tower PROMOTER M.e.d.s association TUTORS Victor Dachin Diana Neamtu YOUTOUBE VIDEO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI-G2jYgs5s

DESCRIPTION For two weeks in August we left the city lights behind. Far from contemporary civilisation without shops, neon lights and deafening background noise, we wiped the slate clean and become ‘naked minds’ again. The goal was to find inspiration in traditional work, craftsmanship and nature to realise our own designs. Not to get distracted by the outside world but seeking creativity from within, and from others in this unique group. It’s a meeting of people, nature, material, culture, language and opinion. Twister is a tower built up around a tree, wich can serve as an abservation point, fortress, hiding pace... Thanks to the rough wood we used and the simple building teqniques, our structure blends together with the nature all around. 17

Requalification Architecture project of ex-Thermoelectric plant of Freixo

INNESTI OROGRAFICI_OROGRAPHIC INSERTS LOCATION Freixo distict, Oporto (Portugal) PROJECT TYPE PROMOTERS University of Ferrara, Architecture Deparment, UNIFE University of Porto, Faculty of Architecture, FAUP ADVISORS Prof. Arch. Alessandro Massarente (UNIFE) Prof. Arch. Helder Casal Ribeiro (FAUP) CO-ADVISORS Prof. Rui Braz Afonso (FAUP) Arch. Alberto Verde (UNIFE) DESCRIPTION The thesis investigates the active use of a neglected asset, which today represents a significant part of the Italian and European suburbs. The case study is the city of Porto, where a substantial part of the research and project work took place during a six months’ visiting period. The location opened up unexpected possibilities of investigation, by linking the survey topic to the specific conditions of the site, which is the uniqueness of the landscape of Porto and the Douro River. The relationship with the Douro river is fundamental for the design vision: it is visual and mediated by the altitude. The project converts a space that was born and conceived for energy production, in a multifunctional cultural centre. Today’s architecture can offer a smart alternative to the demolition and speculative zoning of post-industrial areas. Demonstrating that the testing case of Thermoelectric Plant of Freixo presents intrinsic values - landscape, urban and architectural - it is possible to state that peri-urban ex-industrial heritage has qualitatively similar values. This abandoned area could become a creative Workshop that will attract visitors outside the city’s borders, in a place that can host events and activities, some of which are aimed at the neighbourhood, so to provide services. Due to the crisis - affecting the economy, the values and the identity - that we all, both Italy and Portugal, are experiencing today, we can either choose to invest in development and resources by focusing on how to contribute to a change that could generate progress, or conversely decide to follow old logics, producing only stagnation and decline. 19

Regenerating ZIP Padova

TESTING PARASITE LOCATION ZIP, Indistrial Area Padova (Italy) PROJECT TYPE

Multifuncional Industrial Reuse

PROMOTER Architecture Design Laboratory II University of Ferrara Municipality of Padova TEACHER Arch. Alessandro Gaiani Arch. Giovanni Avosani Dott.ssa Elisa Poli TEAM

Elena Guidetti Martina Lusuardi Elena Majorana DESCRIPTION

ZIP is the main Padova’s industrial district and due the companies outsourcing, many of the buildings are now empty, expecially after the 2008 economical crisis. This project aims to theoretically regenerate the whole area trough a parasite extended intervention. Our reaserach started analizing problems and listing different parasite solutions and came out as a real catalouge, where can be found different intervention scenarios. Then we choose a site where we could apply our parasite strategy in order to regenerate and bring life back to Zip. We used the Parasite Strategy in order to intervent in a flexible way, and to develop a concept usefull for infinite cases. The project best expression i the Magazine “Parasite“, that want to be a real catalogue of Parasite Architecture. 27

Redisigning the white cube

PERMEABLE PARASITE LOCATION Milano Design week 2018 Isola District Milan (Italy) MEDSexhibition pavilion PROMOTER MEDS (Meeting of Design Student) TEAM

Elena Guidetti Elena Majorana Charles Pender Giulia Romanelli

PROJECT TYPE Architecture Utopic Design DESCRIPTION Redesigning the White Cube is a book scheduled to publish in late 2018 curated and designed by Charles Pender and Our Place Studio. Various Artists from different disciplines were asked to redesign an element of the White Cube format. Permeable Parasite, is an ongoing project with the aim to develop the artistic Italian heritage as an exhibiting suggestion, avoiding the musealization phenomenon and overturning the White Cube concept. Permeable Parasite is an additional element generating itself from the shapes of the hosting architecture, enhancing its qualities but being versatile at the same time. It’s a temporary element that becomes a space catalyst, modifying the perception of the hosting architecture as well as the hosted contemporary art installation. Permeable Parasite was tested so far on the Campanile in Venice, the trullo of Alberobello, Fontana Maggiore in Perugia and Palazzo Diamanti in Ferrara. 33
