01. REFUGEE CAMP

TEMPORARY SETTLEMENT, BEN GUERDANE

After the visit of the renowned architect Shigeru Ban in T as the architect of humanity, I was overwhelmed by his w all over the world. His genius was to find rapid and susta case of emergency and to compose structures with local a work on my thesis topic on humanitarian architecture and understand the functioning of these temporary projects w

01. TEMPORARY SETTLEMENT FOR REFUGEES, BEN GUERDANE

Tunisia and attending his lecture, known work and his humanitarian contributions ainable solutions for desplaced people in and cheap materials. So I had the idea to d to go deeper into its characteristics and while admitting a sustainable approach.

05

PRESENTATION The project is a temporary refugee camp in southern Tunisia, in the governorate of Medenine, in Ben Guerdane. The environmental context is characterized by its arid and hot climate, the standard tents provided by NGOs (non-governmental organizations) are not adaptable either with the climate or the culture of the region. My first thought for the project was the location of the site, from the research and analysis I found that most of the refugee camps are far from the cities and are mostly on the borders, while in my project I tried to adopt another approach, that is to find a connection between the camp and the city. I wanted to creation of a weekly souk where refugee and locals can have the exchange and sharing between them.

I tried in my design approach to go from the macro to the micro, I started with the living unit and I worked on several models and scales so that users can customize their living space. Then I went to the group scale, each group has its private space, then the neighborhood scale where I emphasized the cultural component of the project or I gave the choice to cover the shelters to give each neighborhood its identity and it helps a lot in terms of location since many disaster victims get lost in these types of spaces. In the end, there was a lot of work done on the scale of the camp and its components such as health units, schools, public squares the military... 06

The project contains two health units, the unit is composed of a reception, doctor and pediatrician cabinets, a psychology cabinet, recovery units and a first aid station. For the design of the health unit I was inspired by Bit Char, it is a Berber tented form very well known in southern Tunisia which is used for housing or for traditional events.

01. TEMPORARY SETTLEMENT FOR REFUGEES, BEN GUERDANE THE SCHOOL

For the school I started from the idea that each nationality of refugee has its own pedagogy of teaching, from where I tried to provide each district a small school and it is the occupants of the district who will take care of this school. This school contains a reception, classrooms, a multipurpose room and a playground.

THE SHELTER Structure métallique

Inspired by several shelter projects such as Shigeru Ban's paper loghouse, my idea was to create a temporary structure that adapts to the Tunisian south and protects the occupants from the climate and the sirocco. For the Materials, I used sand dice for the foundation to raise the shelter to have a crawl space. The shelter is dismountable and can be moved. The sustainable side of the shelter is to have good air circulation, water storage and solar panels for the electricity.

I worked on the concept of customizing the space where I proposed several prototype plans and a double prototype depending on the number of families.

Each nationality can use its own traditional fabric to cover the shelters. This gesture allows the identification of each district and gives the feeling of integration to the environment, it helps enormously on the psychological side of the disaster victims.

MEDICAL CENTRE BELVEDERE, TUNIS

The project includes the design of a medical center in the city center of Tunisia and the project will go through the various stages of architectural design (APS-APD-execution). We first analyzed the site to determine what we can build in terms of location and surface, while dealing with urban constraints that may affect our project in its urban environment. Then, we tried to explore different design options in terms of architectural form and function to adapt to the center's program. The project developed from the schematic design stage (APS) to the design development stage (APD) and ended with construction documents and execution details.
