Triqui Urban Housing

T he proje c t lo c ate d in the neighb orho o d of L a M erce d, contemplates the inter ven tion of a housing building of 7 levels newly built by the INV I (H ousing Ins titute) for the triquis f amilies (indigenous group liv ing in the wes tern p ar t of the M e xic an s t ate of Oa xac a) set tle d irre gularly (in a squat ter area) in the s tre et s Juan de la G ranja and Candelaria, whose migration to the Cit y is only one of the at tempt s of this communit y to leave the marginaliz ation. B y the s am e token, the building was cons truc te d in a generic way with lack of f unc tional and sp atial charac teris tic s that don’t resp ond to the lifes t y le and traditions of these f amilies , the prop os al aims to res truc ture the sp aces in t wo sc ales: the interior of the building in each dep ar tm ent, and out side in the pub lic square, Candelaria In this way, the inter vention result s in a building that inte grates housing, indo or communal sp aces and also e x ternal com munal pub lic sp aces , through the removal and rep lacement of som e elem ent s of the prop er t y, and with the addition of the buil ding ne x t do or. M ore over, in the interior, there is a communit y dining ro om that could b e use d as a p layground for p ar ties and celebrations . N e x t to the p atio there is a classro om - librar y for children and young p e op le. T he communit y sp ace is ver y imp or t ant to s tren gthen the b onds of this communit y and to forge their identit y through co e xis tence, it also ser ves

as a p oint of e xchange of pro duc t s and informa tion, as well as b eing a p lace of work and craf t pro duc tion; that is why the proje c t contemp la te d internal yards surrounde d by the dwellingsin 3 of 7 levels of the building, that allow the com munit arian use f lor b ack s trap lo om for e xample.

T he housing mo del is a result of the s tud y of the traditional Triqui way of life, and the norms of M e xico Cit y. T he dep ar tment s are f rom 55m2 to 70 m2to approximate the average dimensions of a Triqui house, ab out 50 m2; the sp aces are e x trem e ly op en and f le xib le, sometimes jus t divide d by f urniture as if the who le house f rom the dining ro om to the b e dro oms was the s am e sp ace. Ser v ices such as the b athro om and k itchen are generally found out side in the Triqui

communities in Oa xac a, however, that is not p ossib le in the cit y, as a conse quence, the k itchen had to b e reinterpre te d as a op en - covere d p atio, ventilate d with lat ticework , in c ase they wante d to co ok traditio nal fo o d.

The organic landscape

“ I f Nature had b e en comfor t a b le, mank ind would never have inven te d archite cture”

T he work shop Carlos Le duc presente d a proje c t c alle d “ T he organic landsc ap e”, where the main idea was to create t wen t y - f ive ep hemeral p av ilions in one of the few gre en and pub lic lungs of the cit y, the T lalp an fores t , with their resp e c tive f urniture, for the visitor s of the fores t . T he limit ations help e d to narrow the inf i nite p ossibilities of design: the p av illions mus t use materials and s truc tures that dialo gue with the site, promoting prop o s als enough sensitives to adapt to a natu ral env ironm ent .

Osc ar W ilde

DECEMBER 2016

T he e xp erim ent ation of unconventional s truc tural s ys tems was an essential p ar t of the e xercise, the ins t allation had to fo llow the sc ale, the ergonomic s and the mo dulation of the f urniture in each p av i lion . T he materials were limite d to te x ti les and wo o d, b oth will dic t ate the com p osition of the p avilions and f urniture.
