“I

want a golf club that looks like a blade. Plays like a cavity back. Launches higher. Goes farther. Feels amazing. Is incredibly forgiving. And is unbelievably sexy.” It’s Bob Parsons’ new and unique vision that pushed him to create the global phenomenon - PXG. Bob Parsons, PXG founder and CEO had a burning passion for golf, and decided to do something with it. His desire and fixation with the tools of the trade came to a head following a serendipitous nine holes when he met former PGA TOUR player and golf club designer, Mike Nicolette. The two struck up a friendship and an ongoing dialog about equipment. Later on, Parsons founded Scottsdale National Research Center, which would eventually become PX. He brought Nicolette and Brad Schweigert on board to dive deeper into the equipment industry. From the get-go, PXG has gone about manufacturing its equipment like no other. Fundamentally, the company bears little relation to the established big beasts of the golf equipment market. No cost constraints, no time constraints on engineering, and the team has always maintained an unapologetic focus on performance. Their mission has always been, and always will be to harness the potential of existing and new technologies alike to deliver the world’s finest golfing equipment and experience. The resounding difference – a company determined to elevate the performance of the individual and increase enjoyment on the course. Parsons’ vision had a few boxes that needed to be checked off, and the first was, “looks like a blade, plays like a cavity back”. The team determined that a hollow-body design was a must. But this became problematic as hollow-body irons feel like swinging a lead pipe. Parsons, having served in the military as a U.S. Marine Corps 0311 Combat Rifleman during the Vietnam War, recalled a material known as sorbothane, frequently found inside the stock of a rifle to absorb recoil. Parsons suggested to his team that the cavity be filled with something similar to that. And with that one idea, Parsons and his team discovered a breakthrough that would not only put PXG on the map, but also take the rest of the golfing industry for a ride. PXG 0311 irons debuted an injection molded TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) core, a not so bright but oh so beautiful material that brought a whole new level of “wow” to striking a golf ball. When Nic Roldan, the one and only face of American Polo got his hands on a PXG club, he exclaimed, “It’s an amazing brand, amazing beliefs and really really good product. I particularly love the drivers, especially the way they minimise dispersion”.

A stroke of luck inspired PXG’s signature industrial look. To demonstrate mass properties in layman’s terms, Schweigert drilled holes in a club head and manually added weights around the perimeter. Not only did the perimeter weighting achieve the performance goals desired, the look stopped Parsons in his tracks. Another box checked! The weights were distinctive, functional and 100% PXG. And so, across the board, visible weighting became PXG’s signature. These two pivotal moments laid the foundation for the introduction of PXG’s groundbreaking technology. Technology so good, it was actually put in play on the PGA TOUR by Ryan Moore months before the company ever sold a stick. Every club made by PXG is customized to fit the needs of the player. The recently developed New Course and Wild Piglet join the existing Old Course (Robert von Hagge’s design), to provide members with a diverse yet complementary array of playing options. Commissioned by Baron Marcel Bich in 1987, the Old Course is one of Europe’s premier golf courses. A tree-lined, par-72 course measuring more than 7,000 yards, it weaves through the Sologne Forest, intertwined with a stunning complex of lakes that offer a sublimely serene setting. “With the two 18-hole golf courses, Wild Piglet, the amenities that are already in place and the ones that are coming, I can’t see how Les Bordes won’t be considered one of the finest golfing destinations in the world,” said Hanse, who is in high demand around the globe but only selects a few projects to work on from among the many he is offered. “You have all the cultural attractions around you, the food and the wine, the quality of the amenities... and then to have these two golf courses so different and varied in their challenges... where else in the world could you find that sort of variety?”

A very short drive away, scenic 18-hole Crooked Tree Golf Club delivers stellar panoramic views and an underrated stretch of quality, finely maintained golf holes.

Jojo Anavim New York City based artist Jojo Anavim has established his body of work stemming from a background in graphic design and brand development. Previously a creative consultant for brands such as W Hotels, and Universal Music Group, Anavim crossed over fulltime to fine art in 2013. His work continually employs bold color palettes, acrylic paint, oil stick, collage scraps, found items and advertisements Anavim has been collecting since his childhood. He is known for elevating the mundane by transforming everyday items into objects of transcendence. The paintings oscillate freely between playful and subversive. Triggered by his fascination with a child-like consciousness, Anavim challenges the viewer to not only see something beautiful, but feel something as well. As a child (until age 15) Anavim enrolled in art classes taught by Disney animator Al Baruch, creator of the legendary characters Captain Hook and Mighty Mouse. Anavim credits Baruch with instilling a creative confidence that led him to embrace art as more than

n 1971, a sophomore in high school convinced his father to convert family owned bean fields into a driving range. Using construction techniques he had learned from his father, a passion for golf design was born in the young man. Designed by Bobby Weed, the “Weed Hill Driving Range” served Columbia, SC for 40 years. Little did he know that he’d go on to develop, design, and build courses around the world, Weed Hill will forever be his starting point.

Bobby Weed Golf Design (BWGD) has designed and built many golf courses that have been recognized among the best in their respective categories.

The development of the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Network, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2020 is a major accomplishment for Bobby Weed Golf Design. “Stadium Golf” was ahead of its time and has stood the test of time. TPC venues have since hosted 400+ professional events. He was fortunate to have designed and renovated TPC Sawgrass (Stadium and Valley Courses), TPC River Highlands, TPC Summerlin, TPC Las Vegas, TPC Tampa Bay and others. Following his 13 years with the PGA TOUR,

For Bobby Weed Golf Design, “transforming a flat and landlocked agricultural property (formerly citrus grove) into a world-class golf course was a monumental undertaking.” The course routing proposed was uniquely different from other architects, something that hadn’t been seen before. Notably, the “Every Ball Counts” (EBC) 4-acre practice facility concept was revolutionary. Working in conjunction with Darren May, we utilized ShotLink data to accurately re-create the most challenging shots on the PGA TOUR.

This reputation and recognition must have been a factor when Michael Jordan decided he wanted to build Grove XXIII. Both had deep roots in the Carolinas. Bobby and Jordan became friendly during BWGD’s 2015 renovation of Medalist Golf Club, where he was a member.

Driving Range Defined “driving corridors” were constructed with widths of 27 to 33 yards. Separated by ridges, these mimic PGA TOUR fairway dimensions. Target Greens Laid out in 25-yard distances from 50 to 200 yards and divided into sections that reflect rotating tournament pin placements. Short Game Five hitting “zones” that allow members to refine 35- to 90-yard approach shots off contrasting lies and slope angles. Putting Green An 80-foot-wide, manicured green is segmented into four quadrants. Slopes of 1-4 percent allow players to practice breaking putts at numerous speeds. Grove XXIII’s course design twists in a double-helix routing that can be played in four nine-hole combinations, and in shorter three- to six-hole loops. This flexibility across this 226-acre parcel stems from the clustering of greens and tees and cross-over holes. “A unique “crossover” at the 5th and 14th tees allows members to play continuous internal circuits.”, Bobby said when asked about the uniqueness of the layout. These elements increase the chance of presses and “emergency holes” within individual matches. The two nines also encircle the site in opposing rotations, with the ever-visible, elevated clubhouse in the background. A continuous perimeter maintenance trail encompasses the entire property, such that maintenance traffic can enter the golf course from the outside perimeter.

A plethora of “half-par” holes demand intelligent risk taking, especially in the finishing stretch, where players encounter a deliberate sequence of short and long par 3s, 4s and 5s. In addition, two deep drainage canals bordering the property were repurposed for one of the rarest attributes in golf: long, dead-straight hazard lines. The vast openness of the site (and lack of trees) creates an inland links-style feel that accommodates the ever-changing S. Florida trade winds. A continuous sward of zoysia grass runs throughout the entire course, flanked by native grasses that mimic the former citrus grove surrounds. Ken Weyand, director of golf at Grove XXIII and his team keep the club in stellar shape. The ultimate goal for Jordan was to, “create a private membership experience like no other.” The golf course was designed to play firm and fast, with special features that produce dramatic matches. Mr. Jordan also sought the world’s best practice facility with state-of-the-art technology. He became arguably the greatest player in NBA history by how he pushed himself in the practice arena. Bobby Weed Golf Design was asked to build a practice venue so challenging that it would exceed what one would experience on the golf course. While you may never see this course or play this course, just know that it’s one of the most unique designs ever built in one of the most difficult environments to build a golf course. Bobby Weed Golf Design continues to impress the world with jaw dropping golf course construction.

s a young girl, golf was the sport Hailey was naturally good at. However, she claims that she didn’t truly fall in love with golf until her junior year of college. That’s when she realized how much she enjoyed the daily grind, putting in extra time to improve, showing up to practice early and staying longer. After putting in the daily work, she decided, “I have the ability to be great.” Being a fan of Annika Sorenstam, Hailey loves the competitive drive she has while also constantly displaying class and humility. Annika is the ideal example of a strong female athlete. “She doesn’t make excuses or complain about circumstances. Instead, she works hard and trusts that everything will work out in the end”, Hailey mentions of Annika. She also loves and respects Tony Finau. Someone who didn’t have the ideal country club upbringing, but that didn’t stop him from working hard. Hailey recalls that Tony used to hit balls against an old mattress in the garage. “I believe it’s very easy to only look at what we don’t have instead of what we DO have,” said Hailey. Tony made the most of his situation and put in the work even if it wasn’t in the traditional sense.

Before Hailey graduated from college and was trying to decide what to do next, her dad suggested she move to Arizona and play in some smaller professional golf events. He pointed out the improvement she made in just four short years and encouraged her to put her skills to the test against professional golfers. “I remember him saying that at the very least, I’d be playing golf in sunny Arizona and experiencing something new before getting a “big girl job”.” Hailey packed up her car after graduation and drove down to Scottsdale, Arizona. She didn’t have a job lined up, didn’t know anyone, and didn’t have a lot of money in the bank account. She says it was the best thing she has ever done. Hailey joined the Cactus Tour a couple months later after getting settled in. Hailey claims to have made two amazing decisions in her life, attending George Fox University and moving to Scottsdale. She never expected her career to take off the way it did. With nearly 300k followers on Instagram, a strong YouTube presence, and the goal of reaching the LPGA, Hailey is definitely on the right path for success. “I always thought I’d move here and play some golf, maybe a couple doors may open and I’ll find my path along the way. The people I’ve met and the opportunities I’ve been given are all thanks to my move to Arizona,” Hailey mentions when discussing her move to Scottsdale, Arizona.

One of her biggest accomplishments to date is competing on the Golf Channel’s “Shotmakers” series. As proud as she is of that, her absolute top accomplishment is positively impacting the next generation of young female athletes. She absolutely loves hearing and receiving messages from fans stating that she has inspired them or that she’s their favorite golfer. Be on the lookout for this young athlete as she gears up for the LPGA Qualifying school in August. Hailey has big goals for her future and changing the game for the better.
