Jojo Anavim, Lifesaver, 2020 Collage, foil, and acrylic on canvas, 30 x 40 in.

Jojo Anavim New York City based artist Jojo Anavim has established his body of work stemming from a background in graphic design and brand development. Previously a creative consultant for brands such as W Hotels, and Universal Music Group, Anavim crossed over fulltime to fine art in 2013. His work continually employs bold color palettes, acrylic paint, oil stick, collage scraps, found items and advertisements Anavim has been collecting since his childhood. He is known for elevating the mundane by transforming everyday items into objects of transcendence. The paintings oscillate freely between playful and subversive. Triggered by his fascination with a child-like consciousness, Anavim challenges the viewer to not only see something beautiful, but feel something as well. As a child (until age 15) Anavim enrolled in art classes taught by Disney animator Al Baruch, creator of the legendary characters Captain Hook and Mighty Mouse. Anavim credits Baruch with instilling a creative confidence that led him to embrace art as more than

a hobby early in his life. Anavim went on to study graphic art at Hunter College. Much of Anavim’s work depict the nostalgia of the brands and packaging he was surrounded by during this time, down to the LifeSavers his grandmother would always carry in her purse. Anavim’s artworks are part of permanent collections in museums and hotels around the globe, including Dream’s Downtown and Midtown Hotel, New York, NY; Coca-Cola Archives Museum, Atlanta, GA; New York Yankees City Seats Collection, New York, NY; and Surf Lodge Hotel, Montauk, NY. Anavim is also recognized for his commissions for NBA players, business moguls and top-charting musicians including Amar’e Stoudemire, Seth McFarlane, Selena Gomez, Sheldon Adelson, Paris Hilton, Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, and Daymond John. Anavim’s work has been covered by global media publications including The New York Times, American Art Collector, Business Insider and Forbes - all highlighting the success of his career.

J. STEVEN MANOLIS QATARI RHAPSODIES & SONATAS WRITTEN BY BY DONALD KUSPIT

“W

hen it comes to Color, and the intellectual pursuit of ‘Communicating Through Color,’ Wassily Kandinsky’s longawaited heir-to-be is J. Steven Manolis, whose works signal an ebullient 21st century renaissance of the long absent glories of Abstract Expressionism.” Seen in an art historical perspective, J. Steven Manolis’ Qatari Rhapsodies and Sonatas series of paintings are the consummate statement—the climactic grand realization—of so-called “musical painting,” that is, painting that emulates the condition of music, “the ultimate teacher,” as Wassily Kandinsky, the originator of musical painting, asserted. For him, pure color was like “pure sound:” both “exercised a direct influence upon the soul,” he wrote, which, under their spell, “experiences a nonobjective vibration that is more complex…more ‘supersensible’”—“spiritual,” “mystical,” to offer other words he used—”than the effect on the soul produced by a bell, a vibrating string, a falling board.”Not since Kandinsky has the visceral character and emotional power implicit in color been recognized and communicated as completely and convincingly as they are in Manolis’ red paintings. They’re all the more important because they restore Abstract Expressionism, with its painterly color—color gestures, conveying a lived experience of color—to credibility after the assault on it by Minimalism, led by Josef Albers and Ellsworth Kelly, who regarded color matter of factly, not to say dispassionately, as a physical phenomenon, rather than as a spiritual phenomenon; that is, as invariably informed by its perceiver’s feelings, more broadly his outlook on life and values. Color falls flat in their paintings, rather than elevates the surface (and the viewer), as it does in Manolis’ paintings. They have a two-fold art historical significance and value: they epitomize the modernist pursuit of color as an independent phenomenon that began with Impressionism and that came to fruition in Kandinsky’s paintings, where the primacy of color is an aesthetic end in itself and an emblem of autonomous selfhood; and they are a renaissance of Abstract Expressionism.

J. Steven Manolis, REDWORLD Glaze, 2017, Acrylic on canvas, 120 x 120 inches, 4 panels, 60 x 60 inches each. Framed: 123 x 123 inches. Photographed by Kim Sargent at Manolis Projects.

Their high spirits are bracing, a tonic for body and soul; they have a magical effect, for they fulfill the unconscious wish for an aesthetic and emotional sanctuary—a beautiful and joyous hortus conclusus—in an emotionally ugly world, thus repairing the damage done to it by its indifference to beauty. As the poet and critic William Gass wrote, “in a world which does not provide beauty for its own sake,” and “where the loveliness of flowers, landscapes, faces, trees and sky are adventitious and accidental,” “it is the artist’s task to add to the world’s objects and ideas” “beings whose qualities harm no one,” yet whose beauty “rewards even the most casual notice.” One cannot casually notice Manolis’ paintings; their beauty is overwhelming, and instantly impacts us body and soul. To discover and experience Manolis’ beautiful paintings is, then, unusually uplifting, all the more so because they are peculiarly humane, unexpectedly so for abstract painting, which, as Mark Rosenthal wrote in his survey of Abstraction in the Twentieth Century, tends to be a “hermetic” cognitive— formal—exercise rather than an out-going intersubjective experience, bringing with it a sense of intimacy rather than confirming one’s isolation. Manolis’ abstract paintings are a fresh new rejuvenating start for a tired old abstraction.

Red was the most spiritual—“internally alive”—of all colors for Kandinsky, for it is a “limitless…highly lively” color, “turbulent” and “warm” at once, conveying “immense…purposeful strength.” The “uniformity of red” is “the final chord of a symphony that takes every color to the zenith of life, like the fortissimo of a great orchestra,” Kandinsky declared. Kandinsky gives red a central place in his scheme of colors—for him it is the most dominant color, for it contains in itself blue and violet as well as orange and yellow, suggesting Manolis’ obsession with red—his ideologizing it, amounting to an idealizing identification with it—is not misplaced. His REDWORLD series of paintings, 2015-2017—a tour de force—proclaim his command of red: not even Barnett Newman’s allred Vir Heroicus Sublimis, 1950-1951, burns as brightly—shines as forcefully, as though with an inextinguishable inner light—as Manolis’ REDWORLD paintings. Manolis’ vermilion, a brilliant scarlet red, conveys “the constancy of a powerful emotion: it is like a steadily burning passion, a self-confident power that cannot be easily subdued,” Kandinsky wrote; Newman’s oddly anemic red has the worn out look of a spent emotion. Both are masters of chromatic abstraction—color field painters—but Newman’s flat, deadpan red looks spiritless next to Manolis’ sizzling vermilion, all the more intense and assertive because it is given painterly presence.

avid Yarrow was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966. He took up photography at an early age and as a 20-year-old found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, David took the famous picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and, as a result, was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other sporting events. Many years later David established himself as a fine art photographer by documenting the natural world from new perspectives and the last nine years have been career defining. David’s evocative and immersive photography of life on earth is most distinctive and has earned him an ever growing following amongst art collectors. His large monochrome images made in Los Angeles are on display in leading galleries and museums across Europe and North America. He is now recognized as one of the best selling fine art photographers in the world and his limited edition works regularly sell at high prices at Sotheby’s and other auction houses. David’s position in the industry has been rewarded with a wide range of advisory and ambassadorial roles. He is an ambassador for WildArk and The Kevin Richardson Foundation. As the European ambassador for Nikon, he has recently been integral to the company’s most anticipated camera release of the last decade. In December 2017 he shot LVMH’s latest “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” campaign with Cara Delevingne, which can be seen in airports around the world. In January 2019 David was appointed as a global ambassador for UBS. Most recently, in the spring of 2020, David was appointed a Global Ambassador for Best Buddies - one of America’s most established children’s charities.

In 2018 and 2019 David’s work raised over $4.5m for philanthropic and conservation organizations. At Art Miami in December 2019, David’s photograph “The Wolves of Wall Street” broke new records. One print, signed by Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, featuring the real Wolf of Wall Street - Jordan Belfort - sold for $200,000. The proceeds went to conservation NGOs supported by DiCaprio. The equipment that David takes with him on location will naturally vary according to the subject matter of the assignment and the lighting conditions/climate of the environment in which he is photographing. David favors two camera bodies above all else. When a subject is fast moving, he looks no further than the Nikon D5. The high frames per second and powerful motor drive make for a combination that can capture any moment and allows for pin sharp imagery. For everything else, David prefers the high resolution of the Nikon D850. David was asked by Nikon to spearhead the campaign that launched the new Camera in 2017. The D850’s supreme resolution allows David to blow his images up to the large trademark sizes for which he has become known. One of Davids technical tips is to “use a well-positioned remote-controlled camera to capture shots of dangerous wildlife. When conceptualizing animal shots, think laterally and strive for an image that sits outside normal boundaries. This may be to achieve perspective by capturing shots that look up at the animal from the ground, but often to get the animal at eye level and pin sharp. This can prove problematic when photographing dangerous animals but a solution is offered in the form of well-positioned remote controls”

One of David’s more unusual pieces of equipment is a custom-made 14-pound steel box. This object is used to house his camera body and then placed near the subject matter of his assignment. These ‘treatments’ have been used after extensive research into identifying the most attractive and enticing smell for the animal in question. All of David’s images are produced by BowHaus in California. BowHaus are a highly regarded Los Angeles-based printer of archival pigment prints. MARC DENNIS DEVOTION IN THE TIME OF CORONA WRITTEN BY VITTORIA BENZINE

“Holier Than Thou,” 2021 Oil on linen, 65 x 58 in.

M

arc Dennis works in an alchemy of art history and modernity. Armed with one brush and one palette, this Brooklyn-based artist combines elements from the Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelites with democratic imagery culled from pop culture, common to the surface levels of our collective consciousness. Dennis grounds these pilfered references in pure technical virtuosity – hyperrealism so startling it takes effort to accept these are paintings and not photos. The synthesis yields a style distinctly Dennis’ alone – subversive, sexual, and sumptuous all at once. The artist’s latest series, Love in the Time of Corona, employs this approach in processing the past year. Crafted predominantly during the pandemic, each canvas cradles a sliver of Dennis’ actual heart, aching for discovery just beneath the revered visage of rapturous verve that’s brought him so much acclaim. Love in the Time of Corona pushes Dennis’ hyperrealism to new heights. Here he achieves true trompe l’oeil, the complete (and often breathtaking) optical illusion of 3D reality. Meanwhile, the subject matter throughout this series trades contemporary shock value for the classics. Impeccable reproductions emblematic of the western art historical canon acquire fresh life alongside the artist’s convincing illusions, including wildlife and the paint-streaked walls of his studio space, specked with push pins and tape. Trompe l’oeil speaks to the universal human attraction to charlatanry—visual tricks are exciting, arresting, and flashy. Even without further contemplation, these canvases captivate. Oftentimes, human beings are liable to conflate the quasi-magic of illusion with love. During the pandemic, Dennis pined after in-person experiences. He missed his loved ones, he missed exploration, and he missed time spent standing in front of the many storied artworks critical to his own painterly development. Locked away in his studio during quarantine, Dennis painted through the pangs of all that missing.

Allegory of Admiration, 2021 Oil on linen, 60 x 64 in.

“Richter’s Cat,” 2021 Oil on linen, 48 x 38 in.

In From a Close Distance, the artist recreates The Princesse de Broglie by French Neoclassical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, an artwork held hostage at the shuttered Metropolitan Museum of Art throughout Spring 2020. Dennis surrounds the Princesse with paint swatches and detail shots which appear to be taped on the wall beside her, but are actually part of the canvas proper, all crafted by the artist’s own hand. Further phantasmic snippets throughout the series include Van Gogh’s sunflowers and an image of the famous Love sculpture in Philadelphia, where Dennis once earned his BFA. Other artworks, like the dynamic Richter’s Cat, use animals to elaborate on the classical artworks whose presence Dennis was coveting. The artist pays tribute to Gerard Richter’s iconic portrait titled Betty, while placing the painting with fabricated depth on a wall littered with paint. This is really how Dennis works in his studio, testing color and brushstrokes on the surrounding walls. An agile cat leaps across the canvas while Betty’s back is turned, throwing a full shadow over Richter’s infamous imagery. There is a freedom here which belies Dennis’ deepest desires in the throes of unprecedented lockdown. Post-it notes proliferate the series as well. To cope with the chaos and fear, Dennis found comfort transcribing every single text he received from his loved ones, friends, collectors and strangers alike throughout isolation. The eponymous painting, Love in the Time of Corona, pulls from hundreds of such messages to cull a selection equal parts silly, smart, clever, absurd, and funny. The text messages included throughout this piece and others offer a well-rounded cross-section of comments related to the pandemic, the art world, Dennis’ own practice, and his life in general.

From a Close Distance, 2021 Oil on linen, 56 x 60 in.

Love in the Time of Corona, 2021 Oil on linen, 60 x 74 in.

Caravaggio’s Cat, 2021 Oil on linen, 32 x 36 in.

Beauty and love are red herrings. Just like trompe l’oeil uses paint to trick the mind into perceiving real objects, the ever-present sex appeal innate to this artist’s work can act like camouflage. Every detail’s outward beauty and striking realism obscures the fact of its careful curation. Nothing is accidental—each element is included by virtue of sheer intention. These are the precise shards of Dennis’ very heart, shattered by the past year’s omnipotent tragedy. Love in the Time of Corona sheds a measure of sexiness, then, for a more devoted, workhorse type of love. This love is diligent, like the painstaking act of recreating an iconic artwork to cope with the pain of missing it. Through the intensity of this arduous labor, Dennis’ artwork becomes something greater than itself, even greater than the aesthetic pleasure it offers. Love in the Time of Corona embodies and honors love’s ability to sustain us through an utter lack of control. Love is, one way or another, the origin story of creation.

EDEN GALLERY BRINGING COLOR TO LIFE WRITTEN BY SARAH DOAR

E

den Gallery is at the forefront of the contemporary art scene when it comes to creating unforgettable gallery experiences. With more than ten galleries around the world, Eden is committed to cultivating a vibrant, colorful aesthetic that is intentionally synonymous with a positive outlook on life. Eden’s galleries are located in major cities such as New York, London, and Aspen, with plans to open new locations in Las Vegas and Dubai in the coming months. In the meantime, their focus is on the continued evolution of their brand as a luxury experience for the masses; featuring the work of exclusive, cutting-edge artists. In May 2021, Eden Gallery announced their new collaboration with celebrated Brazilian muralist, Eduardo Kobra. A native of São Paulo, Brazil, the artist known as Kobra, is recognized globally for his kaleidoscopically vibrant paintings. Utilizing bright colors and bold lines, much of Kobra’s art centers around the theme of peace. One of the most recognizable features of his work, the technique of repeating multicolored squares and triangles, allows him to both frame and shine a spotlight on the famous people he chooses as his subjects. In creating murals and canvas paintings, Kobra utilizes various tools and techniques, painting with brushes and aerosol cans. In his practice, combining geometric shapes on multicolored backgrounds with intricate shading and swirling effects helps to achieve a sense of photorealism. With highlevel attention to detail requiring meticulous technical prowess, the realism of his designs often makes his flat-surface paintings appear threedimensional.

Since his first mural in Brazil, Kobra has since painted in France, Spain, Italy, Norway, England, Malawi, India, Japan, United Arab Emirates, and several North American cities. While many of his murals feature historical figures and peacemakers such as Nelson Mandela and Anne Frank, it is also Kobra’s intent to pay tribute to significant cultural icons of the arts. One of many examples of this was his 2013 Moscow mural of Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Kobra’s main objective is to provide a space for the public to interact with his art. Today, as one of Eden’s exclusive artists, Kobra’s selected works of art, like Bailarina Maya and Mandela, are available to purchase from several gallery locations.

Drawing inspiration from cultural events of the times we live in is a familiar theme for another Eden artist, albeit in a slightly different reality. The youngest artist ever to sign with Eden Gallery, Gal Yosef’s 3D designs have been described as an alternate cartoon universe. At age 26, Yosef has already attracted a loyal fanbase, both online and off. His digital art, which includes both print and 3D digital sculpting, reimagines familiar characters in contemporary scenarios. There is unquestionably a dark side to many of Gal Yosef’s creations. However, the whimsical, comedic nature of his work ultimately conveys his admiration and love for the characters he sculpts. With sculptures and mixed media art reminiscent of both childhood classics and cartoon trends, Gal Yosef’s work is forever evolving with the times.

RJD GALLERY THE ART OF THE PURSUIT WRITTEN BY RICHARD J DEMATO

Partriarch by Bo Bartlett Oil on Canvas, 48.5” x 65”

I

opened RJD Gallery in 2009, after a business sabbatical taken in 2002, in the hope to cultivate donors and raise awareness for a myriad of non-profit causes, including, The Southampton Animal Shelter, amfAR, Fountain House NYC, and The Retreat where I was on the board for over 14 years. The gallery has endowed a portion of our proceeds to their support, continued growth, and the success of their missions ever since. Developing the art of the pursuit, and the refining of specific collections dear to me, started very early and has encompassed many forms; from vintage toys and automobiles, homes, and now to the passionate pull of the narrative artwork that consumes us. Art is a passion that all of us can enjoy daily, and even multiple times a day to enhance our lives, bring joy to our hearts and a new light to our daily vision. The art we offer is readily shared with one’s family and friends and creates very passionate and deep conversations. It is also often a wise investment for future generations to learn about and enjoy as well as to potentially create future financial diversification and growth.

Today we are proud to serve an extensive and growing roster of talented artists, and an abundant list of global collectors, many of which share common ideals and a common synthesis of life priorities. We’ve become very close friends with many and prior to Covid we had an annual intimate collector’s party at our home, that was enjoyed by all that attended. Early on we established exhibitions for Women Painting Women and an annual event in recognition of Black History Month, which reached new attendance levels in 2019, as we were fortunate to have both Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo, of CNN, agree to act as our guest moderators for the evening, and we brought together many of our artists to act as panelists. Phillip Thomas, a Jamaican artist that we met through the New York Academy, and Eric Fischl, has had an exemplary two years, and had 2 artworks acquired by both Beth Rudin DeWoody, and also the Harlem Museum. We also recognized a developing demand for “American Magic Realism” and one artist, Andrea Kowch, wherein her gripping and unique compositions and artwork have been sold “sight unseen”, and well in advance of completion dates. New pieces of her artwork are now sold out through and paid for, into 2023.

The thematic compositions found in American Magic Realism, and the strong creative narrative that draws us all in, are also found in the artwork offered from the RJD Private collection, in the artworks of Bo Bartlett, Jamie Wyeth, and others. Our cumulative sales have begun to recover from 2020 and we’ve integrally been involved with many successful museum exhibitions and sales for several of our artists, with more already planned through 2023. RJD gallery works closely with our artists to plan multiple sized artworks in their exhibitions so that the artist may find creative expression and satisfaction, and to also yield a fair amount of artwork, at varied sizes that we have a demand for. With artwork available both large and small, and through select commissions, they have an opportunity to appeal to a larger audience of collectors, with price points for all budgets. These exhibitions enable and empower the artists to move forward on their journey, and to better serve our collector’s needs, as many of them have virtually little or no wall space left.

We maintain a stellar reputation, wherein the artist and the collectors come first, and we invest heavily with our time, and attention to all details, that are superior to what most would even contemplate, or attempt. We might make it look easy, but it took over 40 years in marketing, development, and customer care priorities to achieve and master the services that we provide to best facilitate and support the artists, and the collectors we all supply and service. Our entire staff is well trained, and works endlessly, 24/7, to serve our artists and collector’s needs. We are very focused on the quality of the art that the artists create, its strategic placement, as well as the professionalism and knowledge of the gallery team that brings the best and most effective results. At this time most of our sales are out of our own state, and much of the art travels overseas. Our client list includes everyone from A-list celebrities, Silicon Valley titans, royal families of the Middle East, successful businessmen and women of the Midwest, and astute collectors all over Europe and Asia. For the fine artists we serve, painting is their most effective, preferred, and important means of communication and expression. The gallery staff must effectively interpret their needs in creating and planning unique individual artist marketing programs as we build their long-term careers, strong and steady museum representation, and collector relationships, with our presence and offered assured provenance, that they, and astute collectors deserve. MERKABA BY CHRISTOPHER MARTIN

F

or 26 years, Christopher Martin’s work has continued to evolve as the artist explores new expressions of himself with different bodies of works. Twentysix years of creating stunning paintings, each unique, each eye-catching, and each a colorful expression. A viewer can easily get lost in deciphering Martin’s front-toback approach to painting as they attempt to discern which layer he worked first, then second, and so on. In an attempt to locate the starting point, one could spend hours trying to trace the graceful arcs and waving lines over the length of the expansive panels, which span entire walls in many cases. Then in 2020, when preparations to celebrate Christopher Maritn’s 25th career anniversary were planned, a virus took over the world that affected every aspect of our daily lives. As restrictions increased, the pace of time decreased. This slowdown brought an opportunity to reassess, reevaluate and reignite Christopher’s creativity in new directions. The Merkaba series unfolded as a response

to Covid 19 and the extreme conditions surrounding the pandemic. This series of paintings is based on the Flower of Life, a basic sacred geometry shape that symbolizes perfect form, proportion, and harmony. Christopher elaborates: “During the struggle of the pandemic and its devastation around the world, I wanted these paintings to provide refuge, a place of orderly beauty that myself and others could escape to. The form that represents creation and life is said to be the basic template for everything in existence; using this, I redirected my focus past the stressors caused from the uncertainty we were all experiencing and into a noiseless creative flow state. In retrospect, these works represent the therapy I needed to find my way through what seemed like an alien world of worry, death, and despair. I found solace and hope during the creation of these paintings, which demanded long hours and intense physicality to complete. This creative process allowed me to avoid being consumed by the drama and negativity caused by the pandemic.”

Starting with the Seed of Life shape consisting of 7 overlapping circles that build outward to form a flower-like pattern, hundreds of precisely positioned circles work together with color and texture to convey warmth and positivity.” Christopher continues, “Painting Merkaba filled my eyes with orderly beauty and my mind with enthusiasm. As an artist, you have to know when creative harmony is achieved, when the song sounds perfect, when the written word feels purposeful, and when the paint expresses your visual vocabulary. I felt this harmony the minute the series first revealed its self to me.” Merkaba, a 96” x 96” acrylic on honed acrylic painting, was installed in the Aspen gallery in June of 2020, the high point of uncertainty and confusion due to Covid. Within a week, Merkaba found a home in Connecticut. As demanding as the piece was to create, in its completion, it seemed as though it formed effortlessly, which granted a personal satisfaction rarely felt by the artist. With his studio team feeling the same intense fulfillment, they went to work with their heads down and minds focused on creating an entire series of these powerful pieces. As we approach the summer of 2021, Christopher has completed ten paintings that make up the Merkaba series. All based on the same sacred pattern, each piece delivers diverse colorations and sequencing. In Christopher’s words: Left: Uriel, acrylic on honed acrylic, 96” x 96” Below: Merkaba II, acrylic on honed acrylic, 48” x 36”

“The studio now seems incomplete if at least one of the Merkaba pieces is not in the works. This series has been my creative guardian angel through this dark, confusing time, leading me to name many of them after the archangels.” The Merkaba Series will be on display this summer at Christopher Martin Galleries in Aspen and Dallas. A series of prints based on the Merkaba pieces will be available for purchase from July to December 2021. A portion of the proceeds will benefit UNICEF’s Covid-19 Vaccination efforts in underserved communities worldwide. Twenty-six years of an exemplary career, and Martin is not slowing down or lacking creative ideas for new works. If anything, the artist seems to be accelerating, producing more outstanding pieces with a reignited focus for a long and prosperous career.

GARRY FABIAN MILLER

CAMERA-LESS PHOTOGRAPHS HOLDEN LUNTZ GALLERY

A

s one of the most forward-thinking photographers of his time, Garry Fabian Miller’s camera-less photography expands the possibilities of the photographic medium. Working meticulously from his darkroom, Fabian Miller creates immersive, transcendent compositions that appear to glow and palpitate in place, captivating the viewer by their sheer magnitude and rich chromatic values. By physically curating light through various translucent materials, Fabian Miller’s crafted exposures at-tempt to capture the aura of an ancestral and mythical landscape. Fabian Miller’s evolution in pho-tography through his exploration of time and place while using light as a medium and subject make him not only a unique and enigmatic artist but one whose work addresses central human themes of philosophical, spiritual, and mystical matters. Born in Bristol, England, in the late 1950s, Garry Fabian Miller’s family owned a photography studio. This studio introduced the future luminary artist to photography early and instilled in him a sense of wonder at the darkroom’s chemical development process. It is perhaps here where Fabian Miller begins to conceptualize an aesthetic for the alchemical interaction between creative art and science. “I think the key thing is, from my early teens, I was exposed to a darkroom and what a darkroom is and the things which happen in it; the magical process of images merging into the world through your actions.”

Left: Coloured Seed 3, 15 and 4, 2020, Light, Water, Lambda C-type Print from Unique Dye Destruction Frame: 49 5/8 x 37 1/2 inches Below: Darkroom’s Erasure, 2020, Light, Water, Lambda C-type Print from Unique Dye Destruction Frame: 43 3/4 x 43 3/4 inches

After studying the Shetland Islands and experiencing life at the periphery of urban society, living with the vastness of nature as the rural communities allowed, Fabian Miller realizes early on in his career that he could use photography and the experience of being in the landscape to communicate feel-ings and the idea of contemplation as well as natural observation. This realization becomes an artistic mantra, the potential to become a channel between the human being and outer space, creating work that transmits and reflects a deep interaction with the landscape. “As I walked myself into the landscape, it became an experience of the skyspace, the changing weather systems, the deep-thinking space, and that is how I think the work evolved from a kind of narrative, figurative based practice around trees and plants and nature into an abstract sky, light space.” Garry Fabian Miller’s regular, meditative walks into the Dartmoor landscape (an ancient moorland in Southwestern England), renowned as an incubator of age-old English myths and legends, provides him with the lingering impressions that inspire the visual aesthetic of his exposures. This process is per-haps one of the most consistent qualities of Fabian Miller, his symbiotic relationship to photography. In every aspect of his practice, Fabian Miller treats the medium as a meaningful and interdependent way of living life. In turn, the artist creates wholly sincere, conceptual representations of his connection to a place and a changing atmosphere.

Within a historical context, Garry Fabian Miller’s work directly connects with concepts familiar to ear-ly modern English history, that of the complex interaction between magical, religious, and scientific belief. Although the work contains an array of minimalist forms, hues, and shapes, it is inherent to the past, to a preindustrial society intrinsically connected to agriculture and the cosmos, to the land and the changing patterns of nature. Fabian Miller produces a visual testament to that which escapes simple explanation to the experiences of meditation, spirituality, and enlightenment. “(My practice) is perhaps to do with understanding a much larger abstracted space in which an interest in nature feeds a kind of sense of well-being that comes through a relationship to the life cycle of a tree, for example, and the effect it has on the viewer in an affirmative way… the way the tree and I were sharing the same breath. I became increasingly interested in trying to understand what the energy of light is and how through touching me, it transforms my being.”

MATTHEW BIRD HAVE BRUSH, WILL TRAVEL

R

ealist artist Matthew Bird didn’t know much about the small town of Ménerbes in southern France, outside of a Ridley Scott film and a book by Peter Mayle. But he was immediately intrigued by a collector requesting a special still life for her petite château in the heart of Provence. Whether painting a portrait or a still life, Bird will typically travel to the client’s location which provides an understanding of their unique style and the surrounding for the painting. “I like to get a sense of the individual, their personality, and living space, if possible.” In this case, the commission was for a still life featuring local, Provencal items. The client was also partial to the color red. “It was almost a blank canvas,” Bird recalls, “and my goal was to merge her affinities with my painting style.” Bird traveled to the home, which was on a hill overlooking the town of Ménerbes, a village in the Luberon Valley. Once all the reference sketches and photos are complete, Bird’s travels end back at his studio where he creates the final portrait or still life. Depending on complexity, this process can take many hours.

His style incorporates chiaroscuro techniques (the use of strong contrasts between light and dark) coupled with careful attention to detail. His artwork reveals the inherent beauty of his subjects, each carefully studied with precision and clarity. Portraits that capture the soul, and still life paintings that reveal overlooked beauty – Bird’s work demands contemplation. Curators agree: Galleries, museums, and exhibitions in North America, Europe, and Asia have hung his paintings. Iain Stewart writes, “Matthew’s work is not defined by the subject, but rather by the painter himself, orchestrating what emotional response the viewer will take away, while allowing the freedom to explore and glean the hidden gems within it. It’s a joy to behold.” Bird understands that paintings, no matter how grand or humble, are inherently significant as human expressions of what is praiseworthy, and deserve the skill, time, and knowledge required to paint them. No matter where his travels take him, Bird strives to create beautiful artwork that reflects his client’s interests, affinities, and personality. Whether it’s a traditional portrait or a still life of collectibles, he will elevate and highlight the inherent beauty of the things you enjoy most in life. Start a conversation about creating a unique and timeless artwork for your family or institution. Reserve your commission today, now filling the calendar for 2021-2022. www.MatthewBird.com | 410-581-9988 Matthew@MatthewBird.com

MAGNOLIA STILL LIFE 22 x 30 in. “One of the things I’m continually drawn to is texture,” Bird explains, “and still life painting allows me to explore that in great detail.” The concept for Magnolia Still Life started with his interest in the condensation which forms on silver julep cups; not just because it perfectly captures the quenching ability of an icy mint julep, but because it was a new texture to explore. Next to the cup is the very different texture of the crystal decanter. Crystal is challenging to paint for a number of reasons. Like any glass object, it’s translucent so you see what is behind, and also reflective of the things around it. But crystal also refracts the light like a prism, creating interesting colors and patterns. It’s beautiful to observe and challenging to understand. To round out the composition, Bird used magnolias in various stages of blooming. “I don’t paint flowers that often,” he says, “but here the waxy leaves and delicate petals provide lovely complimentary textures.”

BRANZINO FOR TWO 22 x 30 in. Matthew Bird’s still life paintings are inspired by the great Dutch and Flemish masters, employing a dark background which allows light to starkly reveal the beautiful textures and colors on the table, each carefully studied with precision and clarity. The Dutch Golden Age of painting was very much tied to symbolism, luxury, and wealth, often depicting exotic fruit, seafood, Persian carpets, and Chinese porcelain. The composition of Branzino For Two reveals simple kitchen ingredients transformed into exquisitely observed objects that demand contemplation. The gentle arch of the fish and marble veining in the mortar and pestle encourage one’s eye to move around the objects. The playful twist of lemon, gleam of copper, and water droplets on the leeks are a feast for the eyes. The ingredients for a humble meal are elevated, allowing the viewer to pause and enjoy the beauty found in everyday objects.

They are proud and believe in the artists that they represent. Yalda Sepahpour is a young artist of 25 years old. Simard Bilodeau discovered Yalda 4 years ago when she was still an art student and working in a tiny studio in the attic of an industrial building. When they saw her works for the first time, they knew that infront of them was an exceptional and unique work of art. One month later, her painting were being shown at the LA Art Show and hit an instant success. 4 years later, Yalda is creating impressive large paintings. There is a feeling of accomplishment and pride to be able to grow with an emerging artist, drawing with them the path of their success. It is a privilege to be part of the process. Simard Bilodeau is excited to have recently added Swedish artist Emma Larsson to the array of artists represented. Emma has a unique artistic language that is sourced from freedom and nature. Her work is very organic, an art exploration that is presently finding impressive resonance with emerging and established collectors. With this organic approach, they also count the ceramic sculptures of LA based artist Vince Palacios.

In the last two years, Simard Bilodeau has brought on board several abstract painters and sculptors such as Steen Ipsen from Denmark and Thai Mainhard based in Los Angeles and originally from Brazil. The freedom of interpretation that offers contemporary art has been exciting. It is like reading between the lines with their own experience, state of mind and the place in they are in their lives now in the present moment. Through their participation in art fairs worldwide, Simard Bilodeau has been able to establish a faithful base of clients that look forward to their art/artists recommendations. They are always in search of artists that will be a great addition to the group of artists that they represent. The research process is interesting, it is a discovery journey that leads them to different creative universes. A lot comes from instinct when choosing an artist, but some criteria are mandatory: the quality of the artwork, the potential of the artist to grow in terms of market value, public and private placements, credentials, uniqueness of the style of the artist, as well as what their clientele is interested in. Simard Bilodeau Contemporary is driven by the discovery and unique experiences within their journey. What they do is a privilege to them. Through their business travels, they are lucky to be meeting people from different backgrounds, cultures, languages - they listen and learn as an exploration into the unknown. It is an enriching experience that is only possible because of the art, the artists, and the collectors. Simard Bilodeau Contemporary is grateful and look forward to continuing their journey in the arts all over the world for many years to come. SimardBilodeau.com

oni Lynn Doppelt has been creating various forms of art since the early 1980’s. She began with acrylic and watercolor abstract paintings and subsequently expanded into colorful creations on glass. She found a special talent for sculpture and has enjoyed creating numerous bronze pieces as well as alabaster and marble sculptures. She has excelled with mixed-media heart collages and abstract scapes of all kinds inspired by her abiding love of travel. In a recent interview, Roni Lynn said, “My artwork is all about what I value most. Love of family and friends - love of life itself appreciation of beauty - and love of color are all very important to me, and that is the reason they are always prevalent in my work. “One of her favorite exhibitions was being featured in a show at The Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. It was a show called Three Generations Of Love And Art and included sculptures and paintings by Roni Lynn, her daughter, Stephanie Doppelt Fisher, and her father, Stanley M. Katz. LAGUNA ART MUSEUM WAYNE THEIBAULD & MATTHEW RUSSELL ROLSTON

L

aguna Art Museum is the museum of California art. It collects, cares for, and exhibits works of art that were created by California artists or represent the life and history of the state. Through its permanent collection, its special loan exhibitions, its educational programs, and its library and archive, the museum enhances the public’s knowledge and appreciation of California art of all periods and styles, and encourages arthistorical scholarship in this field. Wayne Thiebaud: Clowns, which was scheduled to close on April 4, will be extended through October 24, 2021. The exhibition is the first museum showing of the recent series first unveiled in December 2019. Born in 1920, Wayne Thiebaud is among the world’s most celebrated living artists. He remains best known for the still lifes of pies, cakes, desserts, candies, and other objects—lusciously painted, brightly colored, perfectly composed, and gently comic— that made his name in 1962, when an exhibition of his work in New York attracted rave reviews and, to his discomfort, led critics to see him as part of Pop Art. He has since become a contemporary master in the genres of landscape and cityscape as well, finding inspiration in the neatly cultivated Sacramento Valley and the vertiginous streets of San Francisco. Over the past seven years Wayne Thiebaud has made dozens of paintings, drawings, and etchings of clowns. Like much of his work, this latest series is in a sense autobiographical. During his boyhood in Long Beach he looked forward to the visits of a traveling Ringling Brothers circus and sometimes helped out behind the scenes in exchange for tickets. The costumes, faces, and antics of the clowns were the beginning of a lifelong fascination for him. The clown series is its culmination, in which the 100-year-old artist revisits those early memories.

Laguna Art Museum will present the first institutional solo exhibition by acclaimed photographer Matthew Rolston on the West Coast, Matthew Rolston, Art People: The Pageant Portraits, from June 27 to September 19, 2021, curated by Dr. Malcolm Warner, former executive director of Laguna Art Museum. Matthew Russell Rolston is an American artist, photographer, and director known for his signature lighting techniques and detailed approach to art direction and design. Born in Los Angeles, Rolston studied drawing and painting in his hometown at the Chouinard Art Institute and Otis College of Art and Design, as well as in the Bay Area at the San Francisco Art Institute. He also studied illustration, photography, imaging, and film at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, where in 2006, he received an Honorary Doctorate. In 1998, Rolston endowed the “Matthew Rolston Scholarship for Photography and Film,” at ArtCenter. He remains actively involved in this program as a mentor and lecturer on the subjects of modern communication techniques, fashion aesthetics and luxury brand strategies. Rolston’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the National Portrait Gallery (Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture at The Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.), among others. The exhibition, which consists of 18 monumental, high-resolution photographic works, some presented as multi-panel installations, takes as its subject the participants of an annual arts event in Laguna Beach, California—the Pageant of the Masters—known for its elaborate tableau vivant presentations. This context connects two of the most beloved cultural institutions of Laguna Beach, a city originally founded as an arts colony in the early 20th century, while celebrating the broader history of art and photography that defines the cultural heritage of California. REHS CONTEMPORARY NEW YORK

T

he artwork being produced by current contemporary artists is likely the broadest and most eclectic period in human history. Ranging from premade and found items, to abstract, to photorealist, to digital NFT’s – it would be truly difficult for anyone to describe what “today’s art” really is in any concise way. But when we look back at what art has been, we usually think of paintings on canvas or drawings on paper, of people, places and things that are recognizable. Nestled in the heart of Midtown New York sits Rehs Contemporary, a family-owned and operated gallery showcasing representational works of art. Founded in the 1930s, Rehs Galleries, Inc. has operated as an art destination in Manhattan for nearly 100 years! With an extensive history in selling Academic paintings, the contemporary arm of the gallery was developed to be a platform for contemporary artists carrying on those technical traditions of Academic Art. There is a fine craft to it all, not to say all the work is overly serious, but there is a clear and obvious standard being upheld. Technique is the priority and the level of work being presented follows in suit. In entering the space, you are greeted by rich blue velvet walls playing host to continuously rotating exhibits – the three gallery rooms allow for curation to create a trio of unique experiences. Currently on display are the whimsical and light-hearted works of Lucia Heffernan; her exhibition, Spirit Animal, features 15 new paintings where various animals take on a human persona. With subjects encompassing protesting cows, to a seal relaxing in a bubble bath, to a surfing mouse, there is a bit of a hilarious absurdity to the compositions which convey the remarkable creativity of the artist.

In all, Rehs Contemporary maintains a roster of 35 artists, including young artists who are just emerging in the artworld all the way to prolific artists who are late in their careers. Perhaps most notably is John Stobart; at 91, he is regarded as the preeminent marine painter of today. Over the course of a long, successful career, Stobart has completed more than 1,000 works of art… and he is still painting! He meticulously recreates historic scenes of prominent vessels and ports, in painstakingly accurate detail all the way down to the rigging on the ships. On the other end of the spectrum are artists like Josh Tiessen, who is still very early on in his career, but the caliber of work truly rivals the best of the best. At just 25 years old, Tiessen has already completed hundreds of works and participated in more than 100 exhibitions around the world. Widely thought of as a child-prodigy, the Canadian artist spends countless hours developing and refining his paintings – his most ambitious taking more than 1,700 hours! The gallery also looks beyond its own borders for talent, representing a number of international artists. Both Hiroshi Furuyoshi and Mitsuru Watanabe gained notoriety in their home country of Japan and looked to expand their presence abroad – Furuyoshi scrupulously renders miniature portraits that are no more than a few inches, whereas Watanabe constructs towering scenes inspired by historical masters. Tony South, who hails from the United Kingdom, takes a more amusing approach to his work – muscle cars, motorcycles, or musical instruments with a primitive twist. His compositions place a mix of chimps, monkeys, and apes as the stars of the show; seated atop a Harley, or behind a piano smoking a cigarette.

The underlying thread that connects it all is the quality of what is being presented. Each artist is a master of their craft, but their distinct approach and ingenuity affords a breadth of intriguing artwork that appeals to a wide audience. Dedicated to presenting truly talented artists, Rehs Contemporary continues to be a leader in the contemporary art scene, and a reliable source for art worthy of collecting. Rehs.com

ANGELI COOVER FINE ART PASSION & PASTELS

G

rowing up in Colorado with the majestic Rocky Mountains in our backyard was incredibly inspiring to me. I was raised on my family’s vegetable farm, and as an artist, I greatly benefited from the colorful array of vegetables in the fields, and the beautiful flowers that grew in my grandmother’s garden. I loved watering them, with her by my side. I continue to have fresh flowers in my home to paint and enjoy, no matter the season. I remember following my dad into the fields when he irrigated the crops. He had his shovel, and I had a stick to draw people, houses, and flowers on the dry, sandy ditch banks. Watching seedlings burst forth from the earth and mature into prized produce was nothing less than a miracle. My favorite pastel in my painting tray is called ‘eggplant’, a deep purple, and you will notice this deep rich color in most of my paintings.

My studio is surrounded with large windows and trays full of colorful pastels. The space is warm, cozy, inspiring, and all the things that make me want to create. My mood and feelings are expressed through color. Red paintings make me feel like a ‘lady boss’! I am feeling in charge, excited and liberated. I am usually listening to the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, or something cool from the 80’s. I love painting big bold poppies.

My dad would often tell me and my sister that everyone has a gift and a purpose. No matter how outlandish your dream may seem to others, you can do and be anything you choose to be. I have taken my dear old dad’s advice. I finally bid farewell to a long career in advertising and marketing in the corporate world and have chosen faith over fear to become a full-time artist. Currently, my husband Todd, and my studio assistant Gracie (the golden) live in a small community in northeastern Wyoming. My paintings are in galleries in the Black Hills region of Wyoming and South Dakota. For more information visit www.AngeliCoover.com

FABIAN PEREZ PORTRAYING PEOPLE’S BODIES TO CAPTURE THEIR SOULS

“A

rt happens in the sublime moment when the artist expresses his emotions through skills” - Fabian Perez

Recognized around the world for his unique style of portraiture and the innovate way that he captures the humane form, Fabian Perez is an intriguing painter and sculptor, Los Angeles-based, who draws inspiration from his life and beauty around him to create gorgeous works of art that transcend classification and truly touch the heart. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on November 2nd, 1967, has always had interest in the arts and he started portraying his family in friends from an early age. Perez is the creator of the Neo-Emotionalism movement, a style of painting he describes for his works, for the visceral reaction it inspires in viewers and the liberating effect it has on himself as an artist. Perez is best known for his characters of the night subjects, beautiful women, dancers of tango and flamenco, and the living legends portraits. The Living Legends collection involves some of the most famous faces of our time with great personalities around the world that Perez considers has left something important in human history. This includes legends ranging from rock stars to sporting heroes. His work is owned by an extraordinary number of famous personalities from Micky Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rafael Nadal, Diego Maradona (R.I.P.), Tyson, Countess Spencer, Ringo Starr and more.

While the artist admits that figures have always been his biggest challenge in painting, he also says that they are his favorite to render for that very reason: the challenge of creating and perfecting the human form. Perez says that beauty in every sense of the word, it is his inspiration and by consequence, the common denominator between the subject or object that he creates. “The importance of creating with emotion is above the technique which is being considered and utilized, it is critical for me to become one with the subject. Engaging a piece of art in this category only, will be as difficult as engaging it in any other classification. My intension is not to depend on a rigid idea, but rather explore within the fabric of flexible feelings”. Fabian Perez has achieved artistic recognition internationally and his work is exhibited in galleries around the world including US, UK, Canada, Australia, Argentina. He has participated in more than 500 one-man exhibitions mostly around Europe. After living in Los Angeles for more than 20 years, Perez opened his own gallery in the Melrose Art District. “I am a traditional artist and still a strong believer that physical galleries are not dead”, he says.

Although, alongside this more traditional route to engage viewers with his work, he is embracing and exploring new digital technology. Most recently, an app to accompany his most recent book, NeoEmotionalism: The New Era, which brings the cover to life through augmented reality. Fabian Perez Gallery is open by appointment only and the artist takes commissions and personal portraits from all over the world. He has worked on close to 100 personal portraits of people from across the globe in the last two years alone. “I like to do my own photoshoots to ensure I get the perfect picture with

the correct lighting and atmosphere to translate to the canvas,” he reveals. “This moment is very important to understand the essence of the client’s personality.” Since his explosion as a global phenomenon over two decades ago, Fabian Perez has continued his artistic endeavors, trailblazing a stunning legacy and body work that is unmatched by most modern artists. “I am thankful for the talent I have got,” says the artist. “I try to be focused, disciplined, and confident as much as I can, to have a successful career and to provide the essentials for my family. The rest is all karma.”
