MAGAZINE
publisher’s note I hope everyone had a fun and safe July 4th weekend. Now that summer is in full swing, it’s the perfect time for our Nightlife and Entertainment issue. This month the magazine is packed full of useful information about some of our area’s top attractions, local art and culture venues, hottest acts touring the country and biggest stars on the silver screen this summer. Hopefully you can enjoy what Charlotte has to offer. I want to take some time to thank all the writers who have been contributing to Elevate Lifestyle Magazine for the past seven years. Unfortunately two of our most senior members are moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Brittany Cason, who started writing her relationship column, has graciously served as the Nightlife editor, and Laura Gainor, who started off writing a little bit about of everything, thrived as the Culture editor. Brittany has been writing for another local publication among other projects and is taking on some new challenges, while Laura recently got married and moved back up North and to start a new career. We greatly appreciate the contributions these women made to the magazine and will miss their talented work. Because of their departures, I will be looking for two new editors. If you think you have the skills and knowledge to fill their shoes feel free to send me an email with your résumé and some of your writing examples. Have a great July!! debra’s summer nightlife 2010 Yes, it’s summertime and the living is laid back and easy for a bit. Finding the perfect hangout for summer nights or even when you are hopping a jet to another city can be difficult. So to help ease your worries, I am going to recommend a few of my favorite places to frequent on those fabulous and few summer nights. What separates a good restaurant or bar from a great spot where you want to return again and again? Well, the tangible factors that always need to be present are of course great food with a fun atmosphere. Beyond that, added bonuses of outdoor seating, live entertainment and fun company can really make a spot stand out. I love the feeling of summer when you can sit outside and enjoy great drinks and a great band! Yes, live music is a plus that makes me want to always come back for more. Music creates great ambience, and your spirit is lifted when one of your favorite songs starts. Interesting clientele is another key ingredient to making the establishment one you want to frequent. I like places where I can strike up a conversation with anyone within hearing distance and have a great time.
With these things being said, here are my top summer picks: Butter Charlotte Butter NC is, without a doubt, the hottest club around. You feel like somebody special the second the velvet ropes open for you and even better once you walk in the door. You feel like you have walked into a club in NYC or Vegas. The interior is absolutely amazing. It’s a very diverse crowd inside which makes it FUN! I love that most people dress to impress. There is a strict minimum one-to-one ratio of guys to girls that is maintained on busy nights which allows for a great balance of beautiful ladies and well-dressed guys all looking their best and having a great time. Butter has truly mastered the sexy, upscale vibe they have aimed for. With different DJs downstairs and upstairs mixing all genres of music, you’re sure to find a beat that will make you want to move. Butter has transformed night life in the best city in the world (NYC) and Charlotte is fortunate they’ve brought their product here. If you’re looking for a big-city atmosphere with great music, beautiful people, and top-notch service, then Butter NC is your choice in the Queen City. 950 Seaboard St. / 704. 295.1565 / www.ButterCharlotte.com COSMO’S CAFÉ BALLANTYNE Dinner and drinks at Cosmo’s can be a typical appetizer-entréedessert affair, or you can take advantage of the mezes and tapas menu and turn an ordinary evening into an interactive food fest. Popular tapas choices include the house-made Lucky 7 spring
25
roll, lobster dim sum, chicken satay or the fresh crab con queso or California dips. Wood-fired pizzas and the eclectic sushi menu add the perfect diversity to the selection of small bites. My favorite drink here is the bartender’s signature “Queen” martini. The “kalamari” with the red pepper aoli is amazing as well. Overall, this is a great place to meet friends for dinner and drinks or for a romantic dinner for two. Uptown atmosphere with all of the trapping of the “burbs!” 8420 Rea Road / 704.544.5268 / www.CosmosCafe.com Arooji’s Wine Room Ristorante When you’re in the mood for good times and great cuisine, Arooji’s Wine Room Ristorante is where you want to be. Arooji’s is known for its delightful staff and superb cuisine. The menu at Arooji’s Wine Room Ristorante features a wide array of great items as well as some of the best wine selections in the South! Great live music, great service and the flow of food and drink make this “a place to visit and revisit” on my list! 5349 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy. / 704.845.5244 / www.Aroojis.com Take control of your summer; relax and enjoy the great restaurants and bars we have in our “Queen City!” I have recommended my favorites – now all you need to do is call a friend and come join me! Interview with Zeke Samples, Owner, Surreal Body Solutions Elevate: Why did you become a personal trainer? Zeke: I enjoy helping people reach their physical goals. As a teenager, I wore a back brace to correct the scoliosis of my spine. I was fortunate enough to be trained and mentored by Lee Haney [who won the] Mr. Olympia title eight times, as well as nutritional guru, Chris Aceto. I enjoy the mental and physical benefits of a healthy lifestyle and enjoy the opportunity to share my knowledge with those who want to learn more about body shaping and nutrition. E: What is your favorite workout routine? Z: It used to be legs, but my legs were becoming larger in muscle mass than I want presently since I am not competing anymore, so I would have to say chest and arms (biceps and triceps). I enjoy the rotation between a chest exercise and then a bicep exercise, ending the workout with triceps and abs. E: What do you think the sexiest part of your body is? Z: Butt
E: Do you have any workout tips? Z: Always remember, nutrition is going to be responsible for 80 percent of your results. Proper nutrition can lead to more mental energy as well as physical energy. No matter if your goals are to tone/lose weight, or to gain muscle mass, proper nutrition is key to success. Keep high fiber in your diet; it will help with food cravings you may have, as well as digestion. Try and incorporate your workouts into a three day split: chest and arms on Day One; back and shoulders on Day Two; legs on Day Three. ‘Super-set’ training style (doing alternate sets of exercises back-to-back before taking a break) will keep [your] heart rate elevated leading to more calorie burn. Example: One set of incline chest press followed by one set of bicep curls, then rest. Remember, when referring to training a body part: “Stimulate, don’t annihilate.” E: What is your favorite motto you like to live your life by? Z: Take everything in moderation, even moderation. E: What kind of meals should someone eat before and after a workout? Z: Before: Nothing at least an hour before. You will burn more fat off the body this way, rather than just burning off the calories from the food being digested in your stomach. Maybe try a pre-workout drink for energy.
29
After: Post-workout meals [should] consist of protein and carbohydrates. The amount recommended to be consumed would be different per weight of person and gender. [For an average female, I recommend] about 25 grams of protein and 25 grams of carbohydrates, and about 45 grams of protein and 35 to 45 grams of carbohydrates for a male. E: Are there any kinds of foods or drinks that help your workout? Z: I am a believer in low glycemic foods to help the body perform less “carb crazy, and I keep my fiber high (20 to 25 grams per day). Ezekiel bread is a great source of low glycemic carbs and high fiber. Most major grocery stores carry it in the freezer section. E: What kind of routine works best to get swimsuit-ready? Z: A good balance of anaerobic (weights) and aerobic (cardio) activity are recommended. Weight training [is recommended] a minimum of three days a week, with a minimum of four to five days a week of cardiovascular exercise. E: Where are you located, and how does someone interested contact you? Z: In Fort Mill at 1741 Gold Hill Road, Suite #220. You can reach me at 980.721.6000 and at www.SurrealBodySolutions.com. dog days of summer Here in Charlotte, the dog days of summer have arrived with a capital ‘D.’ Temperatures in the high 90’s have left Queen City residents scrambling to find an air-conditioned spot to sip a cold beverage and grab a bite to eat. Fortunately, this summer has also seen an explosion of hot, new places that are all too happy to give you a cool time. And speaking of cooling off, what could sound more refreshing than Icehouse. A brand new bar and restaurant in South End, Icehouse has already developed a local following and the vibe of a hometown watering hole that belies its young age. The upscale neighborhood pub is housed in the former South End Brewery building, and the new interior retains plenty of that industrial loft charm while adding some modern touches. This upscale American pub boasts food worthy of a much pricier restaurant, and the atmosphere flaunts the same downplayed elegance. The bar is one of those friendly spaces that demands you chat with your neighbor
about the game, while the restaurant is separated enough to serve as an excellent first-date spot (just don’t get distracted by the Panthers game on one of the many flat-screens in the dining room). And if this place takes off the way I’m expecting it to, never fear - Icehouse offers one of the coziest “waiting for a table” areas in town. While your party bides their time, you are invited to head upstairs with a drink, relax in the sitting area, shoot a game of pool, or just chat with your friends and meet new ones. Early indications certainly point toward Icehouse being the next hip spot to cool your heels. Over in the Music Factory area - where it seems a killer new nightlife spot opens every week - the weekly Friday night revelers can now rejoice at Mattie’s Diner: a place to cool down, sober up and enjoy some traditional diner fare in an old-timey atmosphere. Co-owner Steve Estes describes the diner as a place to get breakfast or a burger in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. “We’re not trying to re-invent the diner,” he said. “It’s an oldschool, Jersey-style diner. Jeans and t-shirts [are] very much appropriate.”
33
And given the packed scene at the Music Factory on a typical weekend evening, expect Mattie’s to quickly become a spot that is as famous for its wait-time as it is for its excellent food. Over in the Epicentre, Vida Mexican Kitchen y Cantina brings traditional, old-world style Mexican cuisine to the nightlife center of Uptown. The cantina was conceived as all Mexican restaurants should be - over shots of tequila among owners, in this case Chris Swinyard and Sean O’Brien. The result is a menu that pairs traditional Mexican fare with contemporary touches. Of course, none of that would matter if the food was accompanied by the same old sour-mix, overly sweet margaritas that blight the chain places. Vida uses their own house recipe with freshly-squeezed lime juice to accent its signature cocktail. If anything signifies “summer on the patio” more than a real margarita, I haven’t found it. In the category of “same building, new scene,” the Sunset Grille on Park Road is the new theme at the former Las Ramblas tapas restaurant. Sunset Grille is everything Las Ramblas was not: inviting, warm, non-pretentious and laid back. Las Ramblas became known for outstanding tapas, but Sunset offers a neighborhood grill feel - “A shady place for sunny people,” as the new signage indicates - that the old scene just couldn’t foster. Several new TVs, an expanded beer list that 34
will impress any aficionado, and of course food that proves this wasn’t a one-trick wonder make Sunset Grille worth becoming a regular stop. And a little farther down Park Road, Charlotte beer geeks will soon find something new from an old friend. Duckworth’s has announced their plans to expand their current institution just up the street at the corner of Montford and Park. They will be improving upon their alreadyimpressive draft selection to a stunning 60 taps, as well as adding cask beers and a beer engine. Don’t know what a beer engine is? Stop in -- the new location figures to retain the educated and friendly staff of the original spot. The restaurant is also famously reasonable on price; if you can find time between sips of craft beer to try their signature pizzas and cheeseteaks, you won’t be disappointed when chowing down or paying up. One old favorite made my list of recommended spots this month, if you’ll forgive the digression. The Diamond Restaurant in Plaza Midwood has become a local institution, and more and more Charlotte locals are discovering this late night dig as more hot bars open in this funky neighborhood. Said by many to have the best fried chicken in Charlotte (and that’s saying something), the Diamond is free of trendiness, free of pretension ... and full of fine eats. Ryan Self, Dining Editor 35

summer is officially here! Summer is officially here! This means sun tans and outside entertainment are all in full effect! I know Charlotte’s summer weather can be a little too hot for some, but as fast as the summer goes by, why not drink and eat outside while we can? Sure, I don’t want to suffer in the summer heat, but I don’t care to be stuck inside when I can easily be outside and maybe even enjoying a nice view of the city. Also, I think one of Charlotte’s major advantages of being a relatively small city is that our air is not filled with thick, dirty smog. So get outside and enjoy it while you can! With summer now in full swing and after having been confined indoors for the past two months recovering from arm surgery, my quest has become to have a weekend dedicated to doing my favorite things outdoors: eating and drinking. While my “Curls for Girls” routine at the gym backfired and left me with one arm confined to a Robocop-looking arm brace all summer long, I still plan to enjoy
myself outside at some of Charlotte’s legendary - and soon to become legendary - hot spots that offer outdoor dining. Since my Cinco De Mayo festivities were spent at home, (mostly being shot down by my wife for the sponge bath I was asking for ... still being denied today), I have been craving tacos and tequila. So I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands ... err, hand. So I settled once again with having my wife shampoo my balding-dome, and I headed to La Paz to meet up with an old wingman of mine for some grub on their patio. If La Paz’s award winning margaritas and Mexican cuisine aren’t enough to keep bringing you back, you might be interested to know that they celebrate Cinco De Mayo all year long! On the fifth day of each month, La Paz offers Cinco De Mayo specials like $1 tequila shots! In addition to great food and awesome specials, La Paz features a partially-covered patio to help out in times of uncertain weather. The view is limited and only consists of busy SouthEnd traffic, but still gives you the feeling that you are eating inside the city limits. The meal portions are all generous, making La Paz a perfect way to start off a night going in to the city. Try their pork tacos!

One of Charlotte’s oldest patios that still packs ’em in is Dixie’s Tavern. Some karaoke queens know Dixie’s mainly for their Monday Karaoke night, but Dixie’s is also notorious for their massive patio. With Time Warner Cable Arena only a beer cap’s throw away, there is always a party at Dixie’s. If you plan to eat outside, get there early; this party patio is strictly for the drinking folk after 9 p.m. With daily beer specials and a patio big enough to hold a couple of football teams, you can’t go wrong with Dixie’s, especially with a group of people. The patio does get packed quickly, so get there somewhat early to mark your territory if you plan to stay for a while. (Side note: I have previously ‘marked my territory’ by rudely crop-dusting the corner table of the patio ... damn pork tacos.) Jackalope Jack’s has been a staple for years for outside entertaining with a patio that’s covered and uncovered. When I lived off Seventh Street, I might as well have gotten my mail here. Conveniently, they just recently built an outside bar on the patio with a TV -- brilliant move in my eyes. Jack’s offers the usual bar food as well as a killer brunch on Sundays. If I’m still alive after this weekend, I’ll definitely be back on the patio 70
sucking down a bloody and some eggs. If you fancy watching dudes kick a soccer ball up and down a field, Jack’s is the headquarters for watching the World Cup. The World Cup will be aired here loud and proud, morning through night, through the middle of July, inside and outside!
Off the beaten path is one of my beloved gems: Sir Edmond Halley’s. If you want a classic neighborhood bar away from the downtown scene, and nearby but still separate from the Montford Drive scene, head to Sir Ed’s. Nestled in the elbow of the Park Road Shopping Center, Sir Ed’s offers a dark, sultry bar inside, or a garden patio outside with plenty of shade. Serving food until 2 a.m., Sir Ed’s wide variety of grub will keep you coming back to try something new each time. From ostrich meatloaf to fish and chips, their menu is sure to please, whether out on a hot date or just getting a burger and beer with the guys. Permanently written on a board outside is, “It’s nice to be sitting outside in the fresh air, to be free”. I couldn’t agree more. 71
Since I visited some of Charlotte’s older patios, I decided to end my weekend “new school,” and headed out to the Epicenter. When arriving at the Epicenter, we waste no time and go directly to Suite. I am embarrassed to say, but I am a Suite virgin -- I am actually more of a bar man than a club man (especially after I tricked my wife into marrying me), but I need to be outside and I have heard nothing but positive things about Suite’s outside arrangement. Suite’s patio blew my expectations out of the water. Their outdoor setup left me feeling as if I was on vacation in another city. The view is arguably the best from any patio in Charlotte, and the staff is friendly and quick to pour no matter how crowded it is. Tucked away upstairs, Kazba offers a light menu that you can enjoy either inside or out on their patio. Kazba is a perfect place to start or end the night, and is clearly the hottest lounge you will find in Charlotte. No matter where your taste buds take you, Charlotte has outdoor dining that can appease any palate. So sit back and inhale the clean air while you can. Cheers! Sean Flynn 72

The Mint Museum Randolph initially served the region as the first branch of the United States Mint, coining $5 million in gold from 1836 to the outbreak of the Civil War. A grassroots community effort during the Great Depression saved the original federal-style building from demolition and moved it to its present Randolph Road site. The mint was formally opened to the public October 22, 1936 as North Carolina’s first art museum.
Today the Mint Museum is a rich and diverse resource with noted collections of ancient and contemporary American, African, Asian and

see the big picture this summer With the arrival of summer come the invariable trips to the beach, days on the lake, and road-trips across country. But despite the allure of the outside, staying inside can mean getting a little action ... that’s right, I’m talking movie action. Every summer, film-makers release the best films of the year, and this summer is no different. Just some of this year’s box office hits include Predators, Inception, Cats and Dogs 2, and Going the Distance. So break out the popcorn and read on about the hit movies coming to a theater near you. Predators While you might be thinking this is just another remake, Robert Rodriguez’s Predator movie is actually a new story rather than a retelling. Instead of the predators coming to earth, a group of hunters led by Royce (Adrien Brody) find themselves on the predators’ planet. And for anyone who has seen the original Predator, well, you know what happens when humans and predators meet. The film will be released July 9 and also stars Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga and Walton Goggins.
Inception From director Christopher Nolan, Inception unveils the danger of a dream. In the film, people have the ability to enter each others’ dreams, and in turn, affect the human mind. And Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio’s character) is one of the best dream jumpers there is. That’s why it’s up to him to undertake the ultimate inception: planting an idea into someone’s mind while they dream. Also starring Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe and Michael Caine, Inception will hit theaters July 16. Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child The Radiant Child is a documentary about Jean-Michel Basquiat, a 20th century American artist who died of a heroin overdose at age 27. Directed by Tamra Davis, the movie gives a glimpse into the struggles Basquiat faced during his short life. According to IMDB.com, Davis said the movie, “places a particular focus on how the artist’s dense, bebop-influenced, neo-expressionist work emerged while minimalist, conceptual art was the fad [and how] as a successful black artist, he was constantly confronted by racism and misconceptions.” The Radiant Child is scheduled for release July 21. Salt Angelina Jolie stars as CIA officer Evelyn Salt, who is accused of spying for the other side. The film, directed by Phillip Noyce, tells the story of Salt’s attempt to prove her innocence and evade capture. You can watch Angelina Jolie alongside Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor in theatres starting July 23.

Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore Another 3-D film hits theaters July 30, and this one will get you howling like a dog! Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore tells the story of Kitty Galore, a spy turned bad cat who has the world in her sight. According to the official Cats and Dogs Web site, dogs and cats will put away their claws in order to band together and stop Kitty. Cast members include Christina Applegate, Bette Midler, James Marsden, Sean Hayes and Michael Clarke Duncan. The Other Guys With a cast lineup like Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Will Ferrell, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton and Eva Mendes, The Other Guys shapes up to be anything but an average comedy. Directed by Adam McKay, this is the story of two New York detectives who aspire to be the best. But as Will Ferrell movies often go, there will be some mishaps along the way. So if you’re looking for a good summer comedy, mark your calendars for August 6. Eat, Pray, Love After years of marriage, Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) realizes she hasn’t lived life to the fullest. When her divorce is finalized, Liz sets out to find true fulfillment and gets to see the world while she’s at it. The film is based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir and hosts a variety of stars including James Franco, Javier Bardem and Billy Crudup. Eat, Pray, Love promises to touch the hearts of many and hits theaters August 13.
94
The Switch Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, The Switch captures what can happen when artificial insemination goes awry. At the age of 40, a single Kassie Larson (Jennifer Aniston) decides it’s time to get pregnant. It isn’t until seven years have passed that Larson finds out who the real father of her baby is. The film stars Patrick Wilson, Jason Bateman, and Juliette Lewis, and will be released August 20.
Going the Distance Coming to theaters August 27, Going the Distance tells the story of a couple whose casual relationship becomes serious when they try and make it work long-distance. Directed by Nanette Burnstein and starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Christina Applegate and Ron Livingston, Going the Distance puts a comedic twist on the challenges of a long distance romance. With new releases like these, it’s hard not to make time for a trip to the movies. I’ve already emptied my purse so I can smuggle in my Cookie Dough Bites and Twizzlers ... but I didn’t tell you that! Sarah Coombes
