CANNED CRAFT BEER F E S T I VA L By Steve Caldwell, Publisher Join Guys with Ties Charlotte for their Inaugural, Cans: Recycled Canned Craft Beer Festival on Saturday, June 28th at Brazwell’s Premium Pub in the parking lot from 1pm - 5pm. Let’s get together to enjoy this festive opportunity to educate and celebrate canned craft beer and local charity efforts. Guys with Ties Charlotte is an organization that raises money and awareness for local charities in the Charlotte Metropolitan area by planning and hosting entertaining events. Their goal is to connect Charlotte’s businesses and growing population of young professionals to organizations in the community that make Charlotte a better place.

Guys with Ties Charlotte launched Charlotte in 2006 and have worked tirelessly to develop connections with local area charities and nonprofits, as well as local venues and businesses. These established connections - or “ties” into the community have enabled them to be ideally suited for partnerships with select charities to strategize, plan, and host fun events that serve as catalysts for bringing awareness and funds to their selected charities by utilizing their experience in serving Charlotte’s young professional community. You might ask, Why Canned Beer? Part of the Craft Beer Revolution is the movement by breweries from bottling their beers to canning their craft beer. In the past, canned beer was looked down upon by craft beer drinkers because it was associated with “cheaper” beer and because of the metallic taste that can often be present when drinking from cans. As technology has advanced, the benefits of canning beers have taken a giant leap forward in the packaging and flavor preservation of craft beers. Join us at the inaugural Cans: Recycled Canned Craft Beer Festival to learn more about the benefits of canned beers and help celebrate those breweries who have lead this packaging revolution.

By Lauren Nguyen of Republic National Distributing Company In many of my articles I write about how you can master making cocktails at home, how to drink smart when watching your calories or telling you about the newest watering hole in Charlotte. Today, I’m changing it up a bit. I have found myself in so many great conversations when I am out talking about random cool facts with new liquor brands that are out there or cool trends. So in this article, I am going to share with you some cool little buzz worthy tidbits that you may find interesting in my wild and wacky world of booze. Wild Turkey Celebrates 60 Years of Master Distiller Jimmy Russell Breakout the Bourbon! Wild Turkey’s Master Distiller Jimmy Russell celebrates 60 years of service this year, making him the longest tenured, active Master Distiller of any whiskey brand in North America. Some of you may remember meeting this spry guy two years ago at Prohibition or at Whiskey River running around taking pictures with all the pretty girls. This Bourbon Hall of Famer turns 80 this November…congrats Jimmy Russell and Wild Turkey!

George Clooney + Tequila… Do I have your Attention? Longtime friends George Clooney, Rande Gerber (Cindy Crawford’s hubby) and Michael Meldman love tequila; on the rocks, by the shot and at times…straight from the bottle Tequila-filled nights with friends is how Casamigos was born. Casamigos, (meaning House of Friends) was truly a surprise to me when we came to start selling it a month ago here in NC. Jaded by so many liquor brands out there these days that have been endorsed by celebrities…I was more than a little skeptical about this new tequila, until I tasted them. These guys clearly brought something more to the table than your average celebrity spirits brand that’s for sure! The Blanco has a vibrant aroma and taste all the way through with a very pleasant mouth coating feel on the palate with a warm light spicy bite. The Reposado hit all the right notes, agave aromatics on the nose, with subtle exotic spices. On the palate, wisps of vanilla and a creamy oakiness are front and center, but not to the point of overpowering the agave. Sorry…I got caught in my Liquor tasting notes…yeah yeah… mouth feel, exotic spices…all that mumbo jumbo liquor jargon. Bottom line, these tequilas are delish! Casamigos is truly a quality product that any tequila lover will respect and enjoy. Even more than the product being amazing is that all of George Clooney’s profits from Casamigos goes to charity. Can Clooney get any better? CasamigosTequila.com

The Moscow Mule You probably have seen the trend of copper mugged drinks growing here in Charlotte as in many parts of the US. This is a drink that nearly everyone will enjoy. It knows no gender or cultural boundaries. The Moscow Mule is a great all-around drink. Its gingery kick makes it warming in winter, but its lime flavor makes it refreshing in hot weather too. Born in the early 1940s when vodka was first being marketed heavily in the United States. Before that, gin was the clear liquor of choice, and vodka was considered a distinctly Russian spirit, hence the name. This may be my favorite of the classic cocktails that are making their return…and you can find a good many versions of them here in Charlotte! Stop by Soul Gastrolounge, Heist Brewery, Libretto’s on Park, Pisces Sushi or Midwood Smokehouse and give their version a try! The Moscow Mule Over ice, mix: 1 part vodka 1 part fresh-squeezed lime juice 3 parts ginger beer (or ginger ale) Preparation: Add the vodka and ginger beer to a copper Moscow Mule mug or highball glass filled with ice and stir briefly. Squeeze the lime wedges into the drink before adding them to the glass. Stir briefly. Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select New and very noteworthy to me is this limited barreled Jack Daniels. Bottled at 90 proof, and made with unique “Sinatra Barrels”, Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select pays tribute to Jack’s biggest fan: Mr. Frank

Sinatra. These Sinatra barrels have deep grooves on the inside of the staves — which exposes the whiskey to extra layers of oak. This imparts a rich amber color, bold character and a pleasant smokiness, followed by an incredibly smooth vanilla finish. Much like Frank himself, this whiskey is one of a kind. It’s a Guy Thing | HOT STUFF FOR COOL MEN By Troy Adams It’s good to be a guy. And because it’s so good, we’ve dedicated a column to it. “It’s a Guy Thing,” will feature new toys, trends and topics each month specifically for men. It’s almost guaranteed to increase testosterone levels without the side effects. Since it is the summer guide…we’re talking long drives, quality cigars, special brews and fresh looks. If you haven’t done so yet, it’s time to hit the links. Charlotte and the surrounding areas have plenty of golf courses to choose from. But nothing steals your manhood like a drive that barely clears the ladies tee…or ends up 20 yards deep in the woods. If you want to score well, you have to hit the fairway. Club manufacturers continue to advance golf technology in efforts to help you do that.

In the past several years, adjustable drivers have been the trend. 2014 is no different. Drivers such as the Titleist 913D2, Taylor Made SLDR 460 and Callaway’s new Big Bertha offer the ability to adjust your loft, lie and face angle. This allows you to tailor both the trajectory and the shape of your shot. But as a former golf professional, let me give you the most important piece of advice: get fitted. It doesn’t matter what new technology is available if you don’t know what your ideal “launch” numbers are. Everyone swings with a different shape, at a different height, with different angles, and at different speeds. Before you spend $400 on a driver, make sure you get the right shaft in your driver and find what loft gives you the best launch angle with the right amount of spin. Too much spin and will balloon your ball in the air or exaggerate slices and hooks. Too little spin and the ball never gets airborne. But even if you still find yourself in the trees…a quality cigar will help ease your anxiety of that tree in the direct path of your ball. Check out cigaraficionado.com for their Cigar of the Week. At present, the Oliva Serie V Lancero is the cigar of preference. At 7” in length, this well-made lancero imparts a dense, chewy smoke that is sweet and hearty with brown sugar, smoky mesquite and rock salt flavor. Mineral flavors and coffee notes come through as well. The Serie V Lancero has a 91-rating (outstanding) and runs about $6.64 each or $30 for a box of five cigars. Want a different cigar for the back nine? Try the CigarAffection.com 2013 cigar of the year, the Oliva Serie V Melanio. The Melanio’s wrapper is made of Ecuadorian-grown Sumatra leaf that’s dark, thick, oily and seamless in appearance. Beneath this leaf, a flavorful blend of long-leaf ligeros from Nicaragua unite, including the Oliva’s oldest, most prized leaves from Condega and Esteli, along with some extra tobaccos from Jalapa for more flavor and aroma. Each Melanio is

65

full-bodied and full-flavored, with unique nuances such as black pepper, freshly-baked bread and unsweetened cocoa. You might also notice some toast and lightly creamed coffee. Either way, you’re in for a delicious treat from one of the most celebrated cigar-making families in Nicaragua, let alone the industry. With a 92-rating, the Melanio runs $13 for a single 7” Churchill or $110 for a box of 10. So you’re finished your round. Maybe the course had your number today. Or maybe you’re king for a day and anxious to spend the money you took from your buddies. Either way, the night begins with a good beer. The website SummerBeerReview.com has come up with a list of 137 of the best summer beers. It is a list worth checking out. Your favorite watering hole may not have the #1 summer beer, Hell or High Watermelon, made by 21st Amendment out of California. You may be able to find #2 and #3, Lemon Wheat and Satsuma, both by Abita out of Louisiana. Anheuser-Busch cracks the Top-10 list with three beers ranked #7-9, with Bud Light Lime, Shock Top Belgian White and Shock Top Raspberry Wheat. If you still have gas in the tank, which you should…because you’re a guy…, then it’s time to hit the town. We men like to look good…but not spend boatloads of money doing it. We’d rather spend money on the boat. GQ magazine lists 30 ways to look good for under $50. Here are a few ideas:

The move now is to mix in some black with your washed-out blue jeans. Rock a black polo or button down with a sport jacket for a sharp, yet casual, look. The trends this summer are double-breasted, plaid and checkered blazers. Hawaiian shirts and floral prints are in. Seems predictable, but it’s true. If you’re not feeling a full chest of flowers, layer on a light V-neck for cool nights. And you have to have some colorful kicks. Bright sneakers are in. But whether its sneakers, sandals or dress shoes, give it some color. If kickin’ it at home post-golf is your thing as opposed to hitting the town, then check out EA Sports Tiger Woods 14. The Xbox 360 version uses the Kinect motion-tracking system to let you play an entire round without a controller. So if your swing wasn’t working on the golf course, maybe you’ll have better luck in your living room. Still can’t find the fairway? Check out the night golf mode and blame it on the dark. Whatever your pursuit in June, “It’s a Guy Thing,” is a motto not an excuse. Make this month count.

Voted BEST Limousine Company

The Style Guy | SUMMER STYLE TIPS By Bradley Rhyne, Contributor Writer CEO and Co Founder of OLE MASON JAR With warm weather here to stay, it is time to gear up for what exactly that means for your summer wardrobe. Summer is the most casual of the seasons for menswear, especially any time spent near a body of water, but that doesn’t mean it is a season to slack on when it comes to your personal style. In the spirit of summer I thought it would be appropriate to answer a few of the most important questions from our readers, and provide some tips and advice along the way. What is your ideal “go to” outfit for the summer? Bradley Rhyne: Summer is absolutely a time to keep things simple, but that doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your sense of style. A plain crewneck tshirt (no graphics for me), some chinos or shorts, loafers and a leather strap / sport watch is my summer staple outfit this year. Feel free to mix in some colors (whether it be in the shirt or pants), and above all else, nail the fit. The watch is a great statement piece that adds a little extra detail to the overall very simple and casual outfit.

I have a few weddings coming up this summer, what should I wear? BR: So first off, any suit that is too dark seems a little out of place for sunshine, so I recommend focusing on something lighter in color and fabric weight. A khaki suit would be my first choice (one that fits great of course), as it looks sharp and polished, but more subdued than anything that might be too formal. Fabric wise, go with a lightweight cotton, or perhaps linen (this comes with a “proceed with caution” warning though), as linen will wrinkle very easily. Basically, if you don’t know how to use an iron then forget about it, it can only end badly. I plan on spending a lot of time at the pool this summer. Any recommendations on what trunks I should wear? BR: Stay away from board shorts, and anything that ends below the knee, and absolutely no speedos…ever (if this ever comes “in style” for those other than Olympic swimmers, I am getting out of the fashion business completely). Trunks that end at mid-thigh with small, understated prints (stay away from loud and large floral prints) are my go-to for a day at the pool/beach. I’m in the market for some new sunglasses, any recommendations? BR: The tried and true shades you can’t go wrong with are standard aviators (Ray Ban makes a great pair). Nothing says summer quite like

75

a pair of ray ban aviators dangling from you shirt when not in use. A matte finish tortoise shell frame is also very versatile and a good luck for just about anyone. I would, however, make sure I stay away from anything that is white or bright colors, as these are way too overstated and cause the wrong sort of attention to your style. What tips do you have on footwear that are summertime appropriate, and how should they be worn? BR: So for what it’s worth, here is my take…flip flops are for the beach, the pool and around the house…period. I know it is so easy to slide them on an off, and they are extremely breathable in that mid summertime heat, but for any occasion you are going to outside of those listed locations…my lean is always to go with a loafer or driving shoe. Summer style is already so basic, so I am always looking for any way possible to dress up my outfit, and the loafer is the perfect way to do so. In terms of how to wear loafers / driving shoes / boat shoes, they all go great with either chinos or shorts. An important note to mention is that no socks are allowed (yes you would be wise to keep this in mind for any airport travel, as you may not want to be barefoot going through security). I hope you all have a great summer, and I look forward to answering additional questions throughout the summer season!

LIVE LIFE UNFILTERED.

Trend Report By Stan Owings

Top 5 2014 Beauty Trend Must Haves I must start by saying that it’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about beauty trends. Some of these trends are hot off the presses and some are old school trends that are back with a vengeance! The overall MAJOR stand-out is that glowing BARE SKIN is in! Before you think, “My skin is not ready for the bare skin look”, I’ve got all the answers to give you the illusion of the no makeup, makeup look. I’m so excited, so let’s get started! 1st 2104 Beauty Trend Must Have: Bronzed Glowing Bare Skin Dispose of the powder bronzers, today! Powder bronzer is a nightmare waiting to happen. Let me explain. Because it is a powder, as it

mixes with oils from your skin, moisturizer or humidity, it will start to oxidize and turn darker (and more orange) as you wear it. I love and recommend Golden iMpact liquid bronzer from iMpact color cosmetics. You simply pump 1 to 2 pumps on your fingertips and apply directly to the face as if it were a moisturizer. The result is a beautiful, subtle sun-kissed glow. If you want more color, add another layer. It protects the skin with Vitamins A, C and E and comforts the skin with coconut oil. Not to mention, it smells like the beach. The greatest part... It’s not powder. So you will look tanned, not orange! It’s also light-reflective so it blurs imperfections. Also enjoy this gem of a product by putting a pump in your daily moisturizer or BB Cream. It’s AWESOME! Total MUST-HAVE! 2nd 2014 Beauty Trend Must Have: The Lip Slip by Sara Happ If you are like me, a lip balm junkie, then you must try The Lip Slip by Sara Happ! I literally obsess over lip balm. I’m always on the search for the next best one. As a beauty insider, I started to hear about The Lip Slip from Sara Happ. Every magazine I opened, there it was. I picked up a tube at the ever so chic Maven Beauty Bar in downtown Frederick, MD during my personal appearance there, and I can not begin to describe the awesomeness of this product! Sara Happ nailed it with the texture, tone and wear. If you’ve been looking for the go-to lip product for everyday life, search no more. Be the IT girl of your group of girlfriends and get the IT product of 2104!

3rd 2014 Beauty Trend Must Have: Bright Orange Lipstick Code Orange!!! Ladies, it’s time to get out of your comfort zone! ORANGE is the new LIPS! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, orange lipstick looks good on everyone one. Yes, everyone! Contrary to popular belief, the warm tone of an orange lipstick is very complimentary to the skin tone. It lights up the face. The color orange in the world of beauty if associated with confidence and youthfulness. The other great thing about a bold lip color is the fact you don’t have to wear very much makeup otherwise. It pulls the attention away from blemishes and imperfections. Put on your fabulous orange lipstick and a big pair of shades and off you go! Try it. You’ll love it. 4th 2014 Beauty Trend Must Have: It’s BAAAAAAAAAACK! White Eye Liner It’s definitely back. The white liner. What started as a trick for on-air newscasters and actors quickly became a big makeup trend in the 90’s. I’m thrilled to announce that it’s back with a vengeance. Whether you’re

wearing it on the inner water line on the bottom lash line or opting for a bolder statement, the rule here is to have fun! Don’t take it so serious. There are great benefits to lining the inner water line on the bottom with white liner. It can create a greater openness to the eyes bad can also make tired eyes look more rested. This is even a great trick for men with tired eyes. If you’re not sure about the white liner and how to use it, check out some YouTube tutorials. Fun stuff! 5th 2014 Beauty Trend Must Have: Sonia Kashuk Body Oil Obsessed is an understatement for my next must-have! I threw out all of the body lotions I had in my arsenal because of all of the harsh ingredients, and also because I never felt really hydrated. God bless the day I discovered Sonia Kashuk Body Oil from Target. Using botanical oils and a vitamin complex, this oil nourishes and hydrates the skin beautifully. It also leave a great sheen to the skin giving a healthy glow and accentuated muscle tone. It comes in different scents, but my favorite is the one with sandalwood, jasmine and vanilla. It can serve as your daily fragrance as well or you can marry it with your signature fragrance. Run, don’t walk to Target for this amazing must-have! Life Trend You have the right to change your mind. I remember reading an article in O Magazine written by Oprah herself. It was her column “What I Know For Sure”, and she was sharing her experience of first realizing that she could adopt in to her consciousness that she had the right to change her mind if something she had committed to no longer felt right. Being someone who always wanted to keep my word and many times would go against my instinct, this really spoke to me. Once I made this thought a part of MY conscious living, it radically changed my life and my decision making. Most importantly, it increased my PEACE! What I now know for sure is that YOU and I have the right to change our mind. We must live our lives based on what gives us peace not on what others think of us.
