The Sixth Annual Harvest Center Fashion Show On Thursday, May 10, the Harvest Center of Charlotte, a faithbased ministry dedicated to helping Charlotte’s homeless, is hosting its sixth annual fashion show. The show is an opportunity for Charlotte residents to learn about the center’s services and its impact on the homeless community. Spiritual music provided by the Harvest Center Musicians will accompany lunch, during which attendees hear first-hand accounts from current residents of the center, who will also be modeling clothes for the fashion show. All models in the show are those whose lives have been impacted in some way by the Harvest Center. A fun and uplifting event, it is dedicated to transformation beyond the clothing.

Started by Barbara Brewton Cameron in the 1970s, the center is now located at 1800 Brewton Drive in Charlotte. 80’s Party at the Charlotte Museum of History Soul Fusion Cuisine, an upcoming Charlotte restaurant and brainchild of Chef Imani, is hosting an 80’s party on May 12 at the Charlotte Museum of History. A fundraiser for The Kemet School NonProfit Corporation, the party is aimed at introducing Chef Imani’s new restaurant to the Charlotte community and raising awareness of The Kemet School.

Time To Give Back It’s a good month to give back this year, and why not have some fun doing it? Charlotte’s many institutions, restaurants and organizations play host to a number of cultural and charity events this spring, all of which promise food, fun and a warm heart.

Pet Palooza, Sponsored by the Humane Society of Charlotte Last year’s Pet Palooza attracted over 2,000 participants, both animal and human, and raised $110,000 to help the Humane Society provide adoption, spay/neuter and education services for Charlotte’s pet community. This year’s event will take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 5 at Independence Park in the Elizabeth neighborhood from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Humans have the opportunity to participate in the Kennelly 5K run, while dogs have their own 1K dog walk! Refreshments and

entertainment will be available through various vendors on site at the park. For those not interested in walking or running, check out the annual “Fido Fashion Show,” to see former HSC “alumni” pets on the runway. Many events are tailored toward the animals, so with Paw Readings, Paw Print Paintings and more, the Palooza becomes a festival for your pets! The event’s mission is to raise money to help over 2,000 cats and dogs find loving homes, spay and neuter 10,000 plus pets and host vaccine clinics among many other things.

Jazzin’ with Jack and Jill Fundraising Gala The annual black-tie gala hosted by the Charlotte Chapter of Jack and Jill of America is happening this March 17 at the Omni Hotel on Trade Street in downtown Charlotte. The theme is “Piano in the Dark,” featuring local jazz pianist, Alex Bugnon.

The gala raises funds to support non-profits that focus on children and youth programs.

The Jack and Jill Foundation will specially honor the Young Black Males Leadership Alliance, a local charity. The gala welcomes those 21 and up for a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 and an evening of dancing and music until midnight. Tickets are $100 each. Save room for the salad bar, as it consists of many items, including 12 prepared salads such as bean salad, shrimp salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, crab salad and many more. Sliced meats such as pancetta, carpaccio, tuna and smoked salmon, are also available as well.

And if you’re interested in seeing what Brazz’s bar can whip up, the steakhouse just added a “very berry caipirinha,” which is a twist on the traditional Brazilian drink. Instead of using limes and sugar, Brazz muddles together four different berries then adds cachaca, Brazilian rum, and serves it freshly made over ice.

Brazz Carvery and Steakhouse Business has been good so far since opening in January and things are sure to be looking up for the new kid on the block, Brazz Carvery and Steakhouse.

Located on South College Street, this Brazilian dining experience offers patrons salad and hot bars as well as rodizio, where grilled meats are carved fresh at your table. Stop in for lunch seven days a week and choose from roasted turkey breast, top sirloin or pork lion. You can also sample the vegetarian lasagna or go the quicker route as Brazz offers breads, soups and unlimited trips to the extensive salad bar.

For a more relaxed and plentiful visit to Brazz, come by for dinner and experience rodizio. Twelve different meats -- ranging from fried alligator tail to leg of lamb -- are carried throughout the dining room, offering guests a gracious

e2 – Emeril’s Eatery A restaurant full of specialty dishes, signature cocktails and a celebrity chef owner probably doesn’t need much help making its mark in Charlotte, but they’ll be glad to tell you all about themselves anyway.

Emeril’s eatery, named e2, recently opened in the Duke Energy Building to an excited crowd.

Jeff Waken, general manager of e2, raves about the mass of customers they’ve had so far and the great feedback they’ve received. Emeril Lagasse spent the first week of the grand opening in the kitchen, tweaking ingredients on the menu and adding special touches. And all the hard work has paid off. Chicken and Waffles has been a hit as well as the five-day duck, in which chefs rub spices and marinade into the meat for five days before serving.

Throughout the year, the menu will change slightly, depending on the weather and season, as well as daily availability of fresh products that will be used to create daily specials. But Waken assures that the popular dishes that patrons will come to know and love will always be available at e2.

Other than the food, the atmosphere is definitely something to boast about. This is not fine dining, like other Emeril establishments. Cus-

tomers are invited to come in, eat, have a drink and relax.

Waken guarantees, “There’s nothing stuffy about this restaurant.” And you can even request to sit according to your liking – the eatery is split up into three areas. The bar area will have more energy and of course, be a bit louder.

There is also a middle area, in which guests can look directly into the open kitchen.

And the back area is set up to be more private dining, laid back and with much less noise.

And while you’re there, definitely check out the cocktail list. The bar manager brings with him skills from Las Vegas and has concocted 10 signature drinks that can only be found at e2. Don’t even bother trying to duplicate the recipes as he makes his own infused bourbons, vodkas and syrups in house. The flavors have been a huge hit, and Waken submits that his guests have been blown away by the tastes.

If you’re interested in checking out e2, the location currently serves dinner Monday through Saturday and is planning to be open for fullservice lunch by this month. Also, be on the look out for their new to-go service, starting this month as well. And in an effort to have everyone in Charlotte try the newest hot spot, e2 is already planning to be a part of July’s Charlotte Restaurant Week this year.

with just isn’t feeling like it. Now the best of two sides can be brought together as there are plenty of options for the Asian fusion lover in us all.

If you are a lover of all things sushi like myself, you’ll find all your usual favorites here. From the spicy yellowtail roll drizzled with spicy aioli to the classic dragon roll, EMZY is rolling, wrapping, slicing and dicing dozens of sushi options. And if you’re looking for a taste of Asian fusion without the sushi part, EMZY has you covered there as well.

The menu offers rice bowls and noodle bowls, mixed with vegetables, seafood or tofu. Or if you are looking for something a bit different, check out the EMZY favorites. The Katsu sandwich is Japanese panko breading on chicken, shrimp or red snapper, then deep fried and topped with tangy soy sauce. Treasure in the Pot is a dish available for dinein only, and features saut_ed broccoli, red bell peppers and zucchini with garlic sauce, and is served to your table in a clay pot.

If you’re only stopping by for lunch, or simply want a lighter dinner, the menu boasts several smaller plates like the dim sum platter, crispy calamari, gyoza and more. Queen City Q opened its doors to Uptown back in January, taking the spot of the old LaVecchia’s location. Walk inside and you’ll see cool red walls decked out with Western d_cor. There’s outdoor seating as well, great for the summertime. Don’t be surprised if you run across a pile of firewood.

There’s no freezer in the restaurant, so every menu item is handmade daily and all the meats are slow cooked in the wood smokers. Queen City Q uses a variety of different woods as well to change up the flavors of the meats.

Take a seat and experience one-of-a-kind BBQ as all the dishes are handcrafted by the pitmaster, stemming from personal creations and old family recipes. The Texas brisket is sliced to order, slow-smoked to perfection and one of the Q’s popular plates. Or take a bite of the Q’s taco, stuffed with pulled pork, Carolina slaw and the owner’s own BBQ sauce. Pair that with a few of the Q’s 17 sides, like the best mac and cheese, corn and edamame salsa or the corn maque choux. Several sauces are available on each table as well, for you to sauce and toss your dish to your liking.

There are several TV’s all around for easy game day viewing. The beer list is solid with all your usual domestics, as well as some lesser-known favorites. Crunch Salad offers a healthy alternative to fast food and gives plenty of options so you never have to have the same thing twice. The menu is made up of a variety of different options, boasting 13 signature salads, as well as soups, chips, flatbreads and wraps. The Crunch B.O.M. is the caf_’s favorite and it’s easy to see why as grilled chicken, red sauce, red onions, cilantro, roasted red peppers, parmesan and a drizzle of BBQ sauce are all mixed together in a flatbread. The roasted

shrimp flatbread caught my eye with its roasted shrimp, white sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, fontina cheese, corn, fresh red peppers and basil.

However, I do love salads and any place with 61 different toppings to choose from, is now on my favorites list. While the specialty salads are made to please, you can create your own salad, tossed with as many different options as you want. Start with your choice of lettuce and dress it up with anything you’d like. Sprinkle on some wonton strips for crunch before you add on olives, eggs, avocado, bacon, white cheddar cheese and maybe even throw on some sliced strawberries. Top it all off with some protein, like buffalo chicken, parmesan crusted tilapia or oven-roasted turkey. But don’t forget the dressing. Your choice of 15 dressings will ensure you never have the same salad twice. Finish your creation off with a raspberry vinaigrette, sesame ginger, cucumber yogurt or how about a roasted garlic vinaigrette. Healthy, meet tasty. You two will get along just fine.

Elevate: Where does the name come from?

Derek Brown: Originally I was going to name the agency Anarchy DJs, but I took my girlfriend Britt’s advice on the name Sounds of Anarchy since the agency is going to eventually represent musicians as well.

E: Growing up, did you dream of opening a booking agency?

D.B.: No, but I saw a need and an opportunity for one.

E: What lured you into the industry?

D.B.: I also own DBraun Promotions and have been throwing events around the East Coast for the last seven years. I’ve realized there was a need for professionalism in the industry. Booking DJ’s for years, I have come to the conclusion that DJ’s are amazing artists but aren’t always the best business men. That’s where Sounds of Anarchy Agency comes in. We handle the business side while letting the artist concentrate on their music.

Sounds of Anarchy From the streets of Charlotte to the strip of Las Vegas, Derek Braun is stirring up a commotion in the nightlife industry. With his new agency, Sounds of Anarchy, Braun is channeling his creative and professional skills to book and promote the hottest DJs in town.

The Charlotte native explains to us how he got started, where his business is heading, and his secret to success.

E: Why Vegas?

D.B.: Vegas is, hands down, the night life capital of the world. I felt like if the agency was based in the center of the nightlife industry it would have an advantage when selling our artists to night clubs across the country. If you’re a night club owner and you get a call from an agency in Las Vegas you will at least give them 30 seconds to hear what they have to say. I didn’t feel like I could get that opportunity calling from Charlotte, so I made the move to Las Vegas.

E: You’ve become quite successful in your endeavors. What do you attribute to the success of your business?

D.B.: You have to give people a good product. Having unique and creative parties has always set my events apart from the rest.

More importantly, I think being a genuine and thankful person is my secret to success. I find myself spending half the night hugging, shaking hands and thanking people for coming to my events.

If you want people to love and support what you do, you have to give it to them first.

E: You’ve been a significant influence to the development of Charlotte’s nightlife scene.

In a city that’s already flourishing, in what ways did you and your business have to adapt?

D.B.: When I first got my start, the nightlife scene hardly existed except for a few clubs.

I used to be able to book a $200 DJ, create a flier and have a party. The popularity of DJs over the last few years has driven the cost of a well-known DJ to over $ 100,000 per night.

It can be difficult to come up with the right combination of booking a big enough DJ and still making a profit.

E: How do you go about finding/booking talent?

D.B.: The internet is always a good way but you have to be careful for unprofessional or shady agents. Stick to a good reputable professional agency like Sounds of Anarchy.

Sorry, I had to plug myself!

E: What traits do you look for in clientele?

D.B.: We have two clients: both venues and artists. When booking an artist in a venue we always see if they have a reputable track record. When signing artists we look for professional and exceptional talent.

E: What sets you apart from the others?

D.B.: I believe our unique styling in our branding, the artists we have on our roster and our willingness to always do right will set us apart from the rest.

E: You promote and manage DJs, but have you ever been behind the decks?

D.B.: Haha, normally no; but I did have a time when a DJ didn’t show up and I plugged up and played. It wasn’t a pretty sight but I got the job done. I’d rather keep the DJing to the professionals!

E: Explain the hardest aspect of your job.

D.B.: Personally keeping everyone happy and having everything go as planned. It’s impossible to do, but I strive for it at every event.

E: What part of your job do you love the most?

D.B.: Traveling and meeting new people!

E: What do you miss about Charlotte?

D.B.: Hands down my family and close friends! Luckily, I still throw events with my other company DBraun promotions once a month in Charlotte so I do get to see them often.

E: What’s your favorite Charlotte venue to party at?

D.B.: Kazba! I have been a part of the club from the drawing board to their two-year anniversary just last month. The music, people, staff and customers are like nothing in Charlotte. It is such a great vibe.

E: Where is Sounds of Anarchy going in the next five years?

D.B.: We are going to launch our DJ Division first. Within the next few years we will add our musician and performer divisions.

Eventually, I’d like to own my own record label to the brand as well.

WarriorDash.com U.S. National Whitewater Center For those of you who have not checked the USNWC, it is an absolute must. This gorgeous and outrageously fun facility is heaven for those who love the outdoors, while also being a welcoming place for novices to learn. Not only does the name suggest a feature of whitewater rafting facilities (by the way, Olympic hopefuls train here…no big deal!), but also zip lines, canopy touring, mountain biking, flat-water kayaking, ropes course and eco trekking. Many thanks to Stephen Youngblade at USNWC for providing me a heads-up scoop on a few events that are being planned, but not even published yet! Stephen hints: “New this year, we’ll be having our own race series called the Whitewater Race Series. The Series will be comprised of trail runs, bike races and Tri/ Duathlons and other types of competitions, all tied to each of our major events. I do know that the series will be a mix of styles of races, some catered to total beginners and some catered to the racing community.”

In addition, there are Kayaking Pool Sessions held at the Dowd YMCA. Indoor pools are a great setting to learn and develop skills, as instructors can work with all skill levels. The Microbrews Cruise is a sunset paddle along the Catawba River followed by a fireside dinner with craft beer tasting. Dates to be determined, but in 2012, look for these twice a month, May through September. USNWC.org Spartan Race Held at the USNWC March 24 and 25, this gruelling four-mile obstacle race will have you developing a love-hate relationship with the outdoors while onlookers get to watch! Happy endings though: the Spartan Race features a medal for all finishers, a fresh t-shirt (because you will need one), a free beer and unlimited access to mud. Enjoy the live music and dirty, pre-shower social networking afterward!

Charlotte RaceFest Half Marathon and 10K In its eleventh year, this Charlotte race takes place in the beautiful area of South Park. Taking place this year on April 4, be sure to register early to get your New Balance running shirt. Fitzgerald’s Irish Pub is set to open before St Patty’s. Perfect timing. Fitzgerald’s is located at the old building of Buckhead Saloon. Walking in here, you won’t believe you are in the old Buckhead bar. They gutted this placed out; and when I say gutted, I mean gutted. There are two nice, large bar areas to choose from with plenty of seating. You should expect a good Irish bar feel at Fitzgeralds throughout the day and night, but they will also cater to the late night crowd as they have a DJ booth area designed.

Leroy Fox is now open where the old Hotel Charlotte restaurant once was. Leroy Fox did it right and is representing Charlotte’s history by saving some of the doors, light fixtures, pictures, mirrors and even some old mugs. Under construction now is their front patio which will have two big TV’s and a sound system to go along with it. Plenty of beer and good food to choose from- try their fried chicken! Who the hell is Leroy Fox you ask? Nobody knows, but I can tell you this hairy dude rules.

A Few More Bar Stools You know that expression a chic gives right after she gets proposed to? That’s what my face looked like after learning St Patrick’s day falls on a Saturday this month and that the Queen City will have over 10 new bars and restaurants opening within the next couple months! New charge names for your bank account and more pickup routes for your cab driver. Some of us have “honey do-lists” that get thrown at you; some have to-do lists for work. I’m handing out a new bar list – you’re welcome. Like I used to tell most girls on a first date, “Less talky, more drinky.” Actually, I never said that, but it was always on my mind. And that’s what I am going to do now and get straight to the point.

Hickory Tavern is open and is going full-throttle at the Metropolitan. HT is the perfect place to scratch your March Madness itch. Shuck oysters as you scratch off all your dud picks on your Final Four Bracket here. HT offers a beer of the month special in just about every category. Zucca Bar and Pizza Put the Greek yogurt down! It’s time to pick up a beer and slice of pizza will stat! Owned and operated by a group of friends from New York, they are bringing their franchise to Atherton Mills in South End. Award winning New York-style pizza set in a comfortable bar atmosphere that you want. Zucca plans to open its doors by mid-April. I’m a damn Yankee myself so this I am excited for, and I will be doing a lot of sit-ups to prepare for it.

Bubbles Lounge in The Epicentre will be open in late Spring.

Al’s Pizza, a Florida chain, will be opening up on Woodlawn Road at Park Towne Shopping Center. Al’s plans to be a place you can go for a glass of wine or beer with your friends or take the little league team out for some Sicilian pizza. In other words, it will be kid-friendly so all you people with kids will have a safe haven, and an excuse to go to a good bar!

Passport To Fashion Charlotte Seen’s annual Passport For Fashion event is right around the corner. Last year’s attendees are excited to see what the show will bring this year, and those who have never been before are curious to see what all the talk is about.

Passport For Fashion is one extraordinary evening - a evening to taste cuisine from around the world, shop in the fashionable bazaar, see wondrous models on the runway, meet talented fashion designers showing their collections, and end the evening with an award ceremony and after-party. This spring and summer 70’s glam is back. It is like taking a time capsule back to the Studio 54 disco days with jumpsuits, sequins and flashy accessories as the “stars of the show.” If this is not your scene, not to worry, the oh so sexy one shoulder look is also big this season. Orange is “the” color of the season; from the palest peach to tangy tangerine, this zesty hue is everywhere.

Debra’s Top Fashion Picks: • One Piece Jumpsuit with a small shoulder pad (yes, the shoulder pad is back) to square off the shoulder line. Fabulous paired with a fashion wedge.

• High-waisted flare pants are huge this season. The pant that Katherine Hepburn made so popular is back and better than ever. This looks works best paired with a great heel.

• A colorful dress is probably the one item that should be mandatory this season. Orange is the number-one color to shop for, closely followed by green, yellow and red. It is all about prints, and you can wear yours

Spring 2012 Fashion Trends Charlotte residents are lucky enough to endure short-lived winters, this year being no exception. Whether or not the climate wants to agree, the beginning of March always simulates springtime for the Queen City, and what is more spring than a collection of color, bare-skinned ensembles and flirty textiles to remind us all how welcoming the warm weather can be? Here are some of the new trends powering through in the next season…

Print Galore Print is doing more than catching a creative eye; it’s basically stealing the show. Like a bouquet of flowers, the floral collections seen at this year’s NYFW were abundant. Whether it is a structurally fitted dress or a pant suit, get ready to embrace the head to toe graphic prints. The most interesting thing is how the designers are taking what you would see on a typical maxi dress for springtime brunching and transitioning it into all pieces of the consumer’s wardrobe. Some top contenders of this stimulating trend are designers Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Rodarte. While this particular trend doesn’t lend itself to any men’s lines, it sure does power up the femininity in a woman’s wardrobe and certainly conveys the change of seasons. Enough of the overcast clothing of fall and winter, and onto the visually tangible change of disposition.

Colorblocking Colorblocking is here to stay ladies. For all of you that didn’t catch this trending courtship of color, you still have the opportunity to have fun with the combination of eye-catching pieces that more often than not can still stand on their own, given the ever-changing nature of fashion.

Colorblocking really pertains to ensembles that are graphic and dynamic. Most notably using color as the forefront of the display. While it’s easy to confuse colorblocking with just plain clashing (it can be somewhat of an art form to display) a good rule of thumb to stay on the safe side is to play around with varying shades in the same color, or colors near that wheel you probably have seen a time or two. For instance, a silky neon green blouse with a navy blue pencil skirt and some coordinating heels would make a splash at the workplace without being overtly trendy.

Safari Still Standing The fashion front-line of such designers as Michael Kors, Donna Karan, Oscar de la Renta and Derek Lam all joyfully play with the Safari theme, a theme that comes into play like tides in an ocean, sometimes fading away but always rising back and making a splash in new, fun ways. The utilitarian jacket, the leopard print swimsuit, geometric designs and urban-like tones that look cautiously chic. The look doesn’t stop at clothing either. Look for accessories in gold, wood and leather.

Texture is important when picking out the finishing touches on an already resort-esque look that can translate into every aspect of your day. Khaki pants and pocketed shirts are great when paired with a skinny belt for work. Happy Hour drinks can be had while wearing an animal print blouse, jeans and a great pair of flats. Night out on the town? Try an abstract printed dress with some sky-high heels. If you are feeling really flirty, even a pair of brightly colored heels that add a traffic-stopping pop of color can work.

The 20’s Era Refined elegance is a top priority when it comes to this distinctive new look. While some may fear it boring, don’t fret. The twenties era inspires the use of rich silks, feathers, and Art Deco beading to boot.

Sophisticated can be sexy and designers Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch and Marc Jacobs know exactly how to implement the appeal in their spring lines. What’s more, is these looks tend to be less binding than your average party clothes and while they give off a polished presentation are probably more comfy than your favorite couch lounging outfit.

For less humid regions, layering is another upside to this new spring trend, making it perfect for anyone whose seasons are punctuated rather than permanent.

Sport Authority Designers are not unaware that the average buyer, in this day and age, is on the go. Of course some of us wish we could dress in ball gowns every day but for most of us, that’s just not practical. Sportswear is becoming less of an untapped area of fashion. A juxtaposition of your preppy tennis player with the agility in material that any active fashionista needs, is now present. Performance fabrics like mesh and neoprene altered into wearable utility vests and other fashion-conscious gear is providing a fun way to be healthy and stylish.

How Does Your Style Show?

You can add flair to work apparel, whatever your uniform. For many career women, a specific uniform is part of the job description. It can be difficult to express individual style while adhering to a strict dress code, but these stylish Charlotte women have figured out how to spruce up their professional look.

Elizabeth Blair, a Registered Nurse at CMC in Charlotte, must wear scrubs to work everyday. But her outfits stand out from the typical grey-blue color so often associated with hospital staff.

“We are allowed to wear any color or patterned top,” Blair said. “I usually wear both brightly colored tops and printed tops, and this is one way I show my style.”

Blair loves to select fashion-forward work attire from the scrub line inspired by popular TV series Grey’s Anatomy.

The brand sells scrub tops with ruffles, buckle-fronts, and empire waists, and in bright colors like chartreuse, raspberry, and passion.

“Wearing bright and crazy patterned tops makes the typical scrub outfit a little more fashionable and fun,” Blair said.

When a woman has to wear a standardized outfit for her profession, accessories are a great way to show personal style. Blair doesn’t have much flexibility with accessories, but she has a personalized stethoscope with changeable tubing in a myriad of colors.

“I also like to wear brightly colored watches to add something new.”

Even when Blair is off the clock she continues to wear brightly colored apparel – finding inspiration in the latest trends from magazines and shopping online. She also enjoys browsing the racks at favorite local spots such as Scout and Molly’s, KK Bloom, and Luna. Her fashion icons are Jennifer Aniston and Blake Lively.

Literally.

Monette Manly, an international flight attendant for Delta Airlines, has been flying in style for more than 30 years. The aisle is her runway. She has a strict dress code, but Manly knows how to add a splash of color and panache to make her look pop! She loves her uniform and wears it proudly.

“Our uniform is navy with red accents. It is crisp, professional, and stylish,” Manly said.

“We have detailed guidelines, but our uniform includes many combinations such as skirts, pants, vests, dresses, and more.”

However limited your uniform may be, it is always possible to infuse your work wardrobe with a fun and unique style! Here are some tips.

With more than 50 outfit combinations, actual apparel is where there is the most leeway for individualization, while accessories and physical appearance are the most seriously regulated at Delta. There are limits on jewelry size; requirements about hairstyle; and at one time in Delta’s history there were restrictions on weight and height!

Start with grooming: If makeup is not allowed or is the last thing on your mind in the wee hours of the morning, try a rosetinted moisturizer for cheeks and lips. This will give you a fresh glow.

“When I first started my career as a flight attendant, we had a strict weight policy and had to weigh in every month,” said Manly.

“As for height, we had to be between 5’2” and 5’11”. It was really restrictive.”

Manly continues to adhere to the passé standard even though the days of weight management are over. She believes that even with a strict uniform, she can build personal style in the way she carries herself. It’s important to her that her clothing is always crisply ironed and well-tailored. Looking polished is the crux of exuding style through uniform.

On her days off, Manly can be found dancing at her studio, the Metropolitan Ballroom. Dancing influences her dress and gives her a self-confidence that shines through the monotony of uniform.

Whether she’s flying through the sky or has her feet firmly planted on the ground, Manly always looks chic and tasteful. She describes her style as “classic feminine elegance that shows a woman’s finer features.” Her style icons are Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lopez, and Michelle Obama.

Manicures: If allowed, nail polish color is a great way to show personal style.

For a classic look, wear a neutral like beige or light pink. To show your spunky side, wear a bright color like turquoise or lilac. For a trendy look, paint your nails a deep purple or midnight blue.

Accessories, Accessories, Accessories! Even if jewelry must be a certain size, dramatically colored pieces can make a big splash.

A turquoise ring, bright red earrings, a hot pink watch. No matter how small, anything with pizzazz will set you apart.

Presence: Be confident. Be you. No matter how strict your professional wear may be, you can always radiate personality and style.

How to Translate Spring 2012 Makeup Trends in Everyday Life.

This spring season is very exciting and fresh when it comes to 2012 makeup trends! There are gorgeous pastel shades for the eyes and cheeks, contrasted with super-bold shades for the lips. The big question is, how does one translate this in everyday life? Truthfully speaking, none of us are walking the runway every day so the looks we see on our favorite celebrities and models just don’t work for everyday life. With that said, I want to share with you some special tips and tricks to help you incorporate these trends without overwhelming your features. My sincere hope is to help you look current and polished, and send out a confidence-inspiring message!

Trend 1 – Pastel shades on the eyes and cheeks Soft pastels can be a great way to create a strong emphasis on your eye color. Editorials are featuring this trend by color-blocking the shades on the eyes. Although this looks awesome on the pages of magazines, it is too much for the office. The key to success with pastels on the eyes is to choose one pastel shade and stick with it.

Softly sweep the shade of your choice from lash-line to the crease.

Compliment this shade with a soft highlight under the brow. My main tip is to keep it simple! To recommend some universal pastel shades, I suggest soft lilacs, lagoon blues, or mossy greens. PS: Don’t forget to compliment your pastel shades with lush, long black lashes. When it comes to cheeks, those who know me know my philosophy with cheek color: it should look as if you’ve had a glass of champagne or been on the treadmill. Stick with warm corals or warm pinks.

Trend 2 – Glowing gorgeous complexion Of all the trends, this is the most important! Your complexion should always be the focal point of your make-up. Remember, you want people to notice YOU, not your makeup. A great complexion starts with a great foundation or tinted moisturizer. The key to that gorgeous “J.Lo” glow is to strategically place the perfect highlighting powder (Illusion iMpact by iMpact color cosmetics) where light hits the face. To be more specific, apply it to the cheekbones and down the center of the face. My special tip is to “swirl” a bit over your cheek color. When done right, you actually look as if you have your own personal lighting crew!

Trend 3 – BOLD lip color This season it is all about taking a risk with a bold lip color to contrast the soft pastels on the eyes and cheeks. Shades range from bold oranges and corals to bold pinks and reds. My tip: If it is your first attempt at a bold lip color, take time to get used to the bold change.

eventually fall in love with it. There are literally no rules with this trend. I suggest not taking it so seriously and have fun. I believe any woman can wear any color when it is worn with confidence!

Trend 4 (Life Trend) – Be a kinder you this season!

As many of you know, I consider myself “The Makeup Life Coach” and could not end this article without some words of inspiration. So, my final tip is what I like to call a “Life Trend.” Make this season the season to be kinder to everyone you come in contact with. Remember: what you project out to the world is what will be returned to you. It doesn’t cost us a thing to be kind. Truth be told, when we operate with acts of unkindness it really says more about us than the person we are being unkind to. Life is way too short to hand over your JOY to someone else.

Into a New You If you’re a fashion and style scholar, you know that not too long ago we were ogling and drooling over all of the Fall 2012 collections our favorite designers were sending down the runway. Well, what about spring? Here we are in the thick of it and the local boutiques and retailers as well as the major department stores here in the Queen City are overflowing with fabulous merchandise. So, if for some reason you’ve been under a rock for the past few months and haven’t noticed, I’m here to keep you in the know on all things Spring 2012 fashion.

What’s trending? First and foremost, color. Spring is the time when we shed the greys, blacks and all of the darker colors we’ve been using to camouflage the extra Thanksgiving Day and Christmas eating we now regret. And with that in mind, it’s all about bright colors this season. Everything from pastels to bright yellow, red and the hottest color of the season, tangerine: wearing color is definitely a new alternative to black.

I can’t say that color is the new “black” because everyone knows that black never goes out of style proven by the fact that the LBD (Little Black Dress) is a staple in every woman’s closet. There’s also a huge influence of the black and white combo paired with a pop color for spring as well.

Next we take a step back in our fashion time machine to the seventies. This is an era of crochet tops, wide-leg pants and wedge-heel shoes; and now, as it always is with fashion, these styles have returned. You should be ashamed of yourself for throwing out all those gems that you thought you’d never wear again because this spring, many of them would have been Oh so 70’s Glam. Crochet tops and vests are all the rage and are excellent options for layering pieces as the weather starts to warm up, but is not quite appropriate for baring your shoulders. Wide-leg pants, and yes even those with a high waist, are right on trend! For the ladies with a taller frame (and I recommend this style specifically for that body type), this cut will give you the illusion of “legs for days” and there’s 99

nothing better than that. Wedge heels continue to spice up your midi-length and maxi skirts this season but beware; all of these trends worn together are a huge No-No. Remember, wearing one trend as a focal point is always best.

Another big trend we saw on the runways for spring and are now flooding into the stores are floral and geometric prints. Floral prints for the season have been described as “flower power” by some and, trust me, these aren’t your Mother’s ditsy prints.

Designers have upped the ante and are giving us tropical florals in vibrant colors, beautiful sunflowers and sensual flower motifs. And when it comes to geometric prints, wearing them will give you an interesting yet unique look that’s sure to make you stand out in a crowd. There are dots, checks, triangles, zigzags, color blocking and a myriad of other variations out there to choose from, so if you’re willing to take a walk on the wild side, this is the trend for you. And if you really want to step it up a notch, look out for whimsical patterns like feather prints, fruit, birds and any other quirky look you can think of.

The preppy look in my opinion is one that never really goes out of style. Essentially, this is the classic audience Ralph Lauren capitalized on and continues to be the front runner in along with Nautica and their variations of “nautical” styles. For this trend think plaids, nautical navy and definitely stripes as they seem to hold a special place in the hearts of fashion designers each year. Logically, you can’t go wrong with a classic pattern like stripes; however ladies, always be aware of the fact that 100

horizontal stripes are meant for those of us who will not look as if we’ve gained an extra 25 pounds. If that’s speaking your language, go with a vertical stripe. Although not as nautical in feeling, it’s certainly more slimming and like all of the styles for the preppy trend, your looks should be viewed as a timeless nod to the classics.

If you’re searching for a way to overhaul your look without breaking the bank, accessories are a great way to infuse life back into your wardrobe. For the budget-istas, you can still rock these trends within your budget. For instance, purse and shoe designers have adopted the color blocking trend as well which is the perfect way to brighten up your look.

Try a 70’s boho shaped handbag in gold to summon your inner disco chic. Belt bags are also back...however, I am not talking “fanny packs” here. Stick with the new, small, belt bags. They’re super cute and less weight to carry on your shoulders.

Finally, don’t forget to update your cosmetics! For an instant transformation from fall to spring and for the cost of a cup of “Joe,” stop by your local drug store and pick up a mint green eye shadow, bronzer, a colored eye liner pencil or a bright red lipstick. Just a few changes in your ultimate style statement can create a lighter, brighter you just in time for spring.
