publisher’s note Finally, no more 90 degree weather. Fall is here, so it’s the perfect time for some outdoor events!
Join Elevate Lifestyle on Thursday, October 7 for the Second Annual Three Olives Martini Fest at the EpiCentre Pavilion from 6 to 10 p.m. It benefits the Charlotte Jaycees, and there will be more than 15 area establishments serving their specialty martinis. The cost is $20 and tickets can be bought online at ElevateLifestyle.com.
Two days later is our Fall Festival at Icehouse Restaurant, which will be outside in the parking lot, and is benefitting the Back To Life Foundation. There will be a cornhole tournament, beer pong, flip cup, music, food, a cash bar, and plenty of good times! The cost to attend is $20, and includes lunch and some ice cold Bud Lights. Tickets to the Fall Festival are also available on our Web site. And of course with it being fall, Halloween is just right around the corner. There are two huge events in town this year, both of which are being held Saturday, October 30. The Music Factory -- or should I say the “Fright Factory” -- will be hosting Music, Monsters & Mayhem featuring Cake, as well as a bar crawl that will feature several small haunted houses around the property. Across town, Dixie’s Tavern will be hosting their annual Grave Diggers Ball. Dixie’s classic Halloween celebration is sure to be a heat this year with featured guest Ke$ha. So speaking of Web sites, Elevate Lifestyle has just launched our re-vamped, newly designed web space. It’s “Your Complete Source On And Offline”, of what’s going on in Charlotte, including a calendar of Charlotte events, an online version of our magazine, photos from the hottest events around town, and a contest section to win all types of stuff. Be sure to keep checking back as we add new features, and launch our EAT | DRINK | PLAY | LIVE Uptown Directory. Be safe and have fun this Halloween!! Have a great month, Steve

carolina’s got art! Carolina’s Got Art! is a month-long, juried arts exhibition and sale, sponsored by Elder Gallery in Historic South End, to celebrate and support artists from North and South Carolina. On Thursday night, September 30, a select list of VIPs and the media were given the first look at what is quickly becoming the largest juried art show in the Carolinas. This is a chance to see beautiful art that celebrates the Carolinas in the heart of the Carolinas’ Creative District. The preview benefits the Charlotte Symphony Guild’s Student Scholarship Fund. A wine area hosted by Bond Street Imports will
be the primary source of fundraising. It will be stocked with high-quality wine options from vineyards around the world. Temple Media is a sponsor and will be filming the openings. This remarkable juried show, held in Atherton Mill, has exploded in popularity in its second year. Artist entries grew by more than 50 percent, from 1,100 entries in 2009 to 1,800 entries this year. Mario Naves, the show’s 2010 juror, took on the difficult task of selecting the 136 works to represent the show. Carolina’s Got Art! is open to the public October 1 through 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. daily. New to the show this year is “Through The Juror’s Eyes,” a digital display of most of the 1,800 pieces submitted. Avail-
31
able during the opening weekend, this digital theatre will not only allow guests to better appreciate the entire body of work submitted, but also allow those works to be purchased.
Due to the quality of the work submitted, Larry Elder, sponsor of the show and owner of Elder Gallery, has chosen a second exhibition named the “CGA! Salon Show to be held at his gallery from October 15 through November 30. Included in this exhibition are more than 40 pieces that can be appreciated in the intimate setting of the Elder Gallery, just blocks from the Atherton Mill location.
Complete details can be found at www.CarolinasGotArt.com or on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/CarolinasGotArt.

100 inch TV Fall is here, which means the changing of the leaves, cooler mornings and nights, and bountiful meals and visits from family. Oh, who am I kidding ... fall means football! And while the Panthers may be off to a dreadful start, that doesn’t mean area restaurants and bars aren’t already abuzz on weekends with roots and raves from fans of teams, from Carolina to Seattle. A number of Charlotte bars already do a stellar job of catering to pigskin fans, but this month’s featured new spot may just take the cake of all of them. I’m talking about Taco Mac, the Georgia-based franchise which has done nothing but build -- and then deliver on -- a massive buzz since opening its doors in August. The bar/restaurant/coliseum (there’s really nothing else to call it once one beholds the
sheer immensity of the place) has staked its claim as the place that does two things better than anyone else: offer a massive beer selection on draft, and create a sports-viewing experience that seems to drop you in the middle of the field. A 100-inch television over the bar is just the start. And yes, you can watch the big game from pretty much any vantage point -- upstairs or down -- and not miss this Goliath. Yet the sports experience goes further with flat-paneled, HD televisions seemingly everywhere you turn. This isn’t the place to go for a quiet Saturday date night; but then again, Southpark is already full of those spots. Taco Mac is a party, first and foremost, and for those that like to party without the same old, dull, light beers, 140 beer taps ensures that you and your friends could do a day of football without anyone ever duplicating a draft. And stafftraining is of utmost importance. On my visits, I was able to describe what I usually drink and the staff quickly rattled off several recommendations to fit my beer palette. And for those who 37
really want to watch football “home style” -- a.k.a. never leaving your seat except to head to the restroom -- six “table-tap” tables feature three pouryour-own drafts. A small indicator lets you know how many ounces you’ve had, and servers check in periodically to make sure no one is over-indulging. It’s a brilliant set-up that lets you pour just how much you want, and it definitely encourages fans to try all three beers since they can pour a two-tothree ounce portion. Of course, one cannot exist on beer alone (can you?). Taco Mac won’t compete with the top-end steakhouses, but they weren’t meant to. This is bar food through and through, and the restaurant nails that (it sounds like a faint praise, but how many times have you had punchless wings or a flavorless burger?). The wings in particular will carry many a dinner, as Taco Mac offers a huge variety of flavors and heat settings. South Park has long been missing a laid-back sports bar that doesn’t require a collared shirt to get in on the action. With Taco Mac’s first foray into Charlotte, it seems to have arrived. Taco Mac is located at Piedmont Town Center. For more details, visit www.TacoMac.com. Dining Editor, Ryan Self

This article was supposed to be how great Famous No.Body is at being resourceful and coming together to create magic. However, this story is really about this group’s perseverance and persistence. It’s about young talent, new companies, and the drive to trump any obstacle in order to continue creating greatness. It’s about Generation X, a new burgeoning race of entrepreneurs, branding their greatness, and spreading their flavor all over the
Carolinas … and not just for the helluvit, but because they are beaming excellence through their talents and projects. Sumanah Khan and her husband, J.R. Adduci, pulled themselves out of the rat race of New York and ventured down South about four years ago hoping to find a slower pace that would allow them to hone in on their special skills. After settling in Charlotte, the couple began to meet local entrepreneurs and eventually formed a close friendship with local cinematographer, Carlisle Kellam. Kellam seemed to be the missing piece Khan and Adduci had been looking for, and the trio soon came together to form Famous No.Body, an agency who services span from content development and scriptwriting, to producing commercials and music videos. This pyramid of talent also creates and hosts its own Web site, creates and disseminates its own advertisements, and acts as its own publicist. Now that’s Generation X. In a down economy, with an unemployment rate at nine percent, this group manages to ‘keep it moving.’ “‘Keep It Moving’ is really about perseverance,” Khan said of Famous No.Body’s newest music video which was captured Sunday, Aug. 15. With super-sexy dressed villains, an artsy car, and a showcase of creativity, Famous No.Body created a comedic music video for “Keep It Moving,” a positive message for young people. The video has a pool-party/barbecue theme, Adducci explained ... and is a short film sort of like a Michael Jackson’s, “Thriller.” Shortly after I interviewed the group, a close family member of the couple prepared for heart surgery. Coincidentally, Khan 45
and friend Effie Louka had recently produced Fashion’s Night Out on Sept. 9, for which a portion of proceeds had been donated to the American Heart Association. While Khan couldn’t be on-site for the final shoot, she kept it moving by e-mail and phone calls, further proof of what an amazing woman she is. No matter the uprise of events, Famous No.Body experiences no delays in their projects. Their air-tight project management system facilitates growth and keeps business moving, and their creativity keeps things fresh and fun. For more information on Famous No.Body, visit CarlisleKellam.com, and join the Famous No.Body Facebook Fan Page. Contact info: J.R. Adduci (917) 294-5184 for production and project consultations. J.R. Adduci is an actor and scriptwriter, having appeared in many projects based in New York. Carlisle Kellam has produced short films for Charlotte Film Festival, and Sumunah Khan is an experienced event planner and published writer. Entertainment Editor, Denise Gregory 46

fake it - don’t bake it With summer on the surf out and fall riding in the waves, how can a fashionista score that summer glow all year? With my list of favorite sunless tanners along with simple application tips, I will have you looking like a bronzed beauty January through December. Debra’s favorite: My absolute favorite sunless tanning secret is Palm Beach Tan’s Mystic Tan. This produces the most naturallooking tan and lasts for a full week. I like to think of this system as a gentle car wash for your body. In just a few minutes, you are as bronzed and beautiful as you would be if vacationing in the tropics for weeks. Once you try this quick and easy method, you will be hooked for life. Why spend endless hours baking in the heat when
you can have a safe and fabulous glow in minutes. And the added benefit is the staff – the crew at the Arboretum location greets you with warm smiles and extensive knowledge of the equipment and products. They always bring their A-Game! Tips on getting the best results: • Exfoliate your entire body first. Skip this crucial step and you risk uneven, blotchy results. Pay extra attention to really dry spots like your elbows and knees. • Use a tanning accelerator. This product contains tyrosine, which stimulates and increases melanin formation, thereby accelerating the natural tanning process. • Moisturize your skin. Keeping your skin radiant and moist will prolong your glow for a few extra days – or until you can make it back for your next session. • Touch up your tan. I love the Mystic Tan sunless self-tanning spray for a little touch up in the mornings. It also works as a moisturizer -- easy to use and worth the money. And now for a few of my favorite drugstore sunless tanning products: Banana Boat Sunless Summer Color Self Tanning Lotion Indisputably a terrific bargain. This product has the same ingredients as department store brands but for a little over $5, this is one of the best self-tanners on the market. Bain de Soleil Mega Tan I love this product because it works beautifully and has a neutral suntan lotion scent. It is an excellent product for both men and women and costs around $10.
51
Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Daily Moisturizer If you find lotions greasy and sprays challenging, foaming (mousse) sunless tanners are a life-saver. I find most Jergens products too strongly scented, but this one goes easy on the fragrance. Available for under $10.
I hope my Mystic Tan and sunless tanning lotion tips help you to get a gorgeous sun-kissed look. So, get ready to flaunt your shiny bronze skin all year long. Readers – One lucky reader will receive a basket of sunless tanning products! E-mail me with Hollywood Glow in the subject line at debra@elevatecharlotte.com. The tenth e-mail sent will be the lucky winner! Good luck! Until Next Time! Fashion Editor, Debra A. Kennedy DebraKennedyShow.com

resort recreation Staying in shape is an ongoing process. Groceries have to be carefully thought out ahead of time; lunch has to be packed prior to a full day of work; and dinner should incorporate smaller, more nutritional portions. I know this all too well. I track my calories daily and monitor those burned from exercise on a weekly basis. But when my vacation to Mexico was approaching, I wondered what it would do to my routine. Luckily, I was headed to an all-inclusive resort that offered a variety of daily activities, from yoga to water polo. The options were suitable to everyone’s needs, and there was even a tour that my friend, and avid cyclist, Katie could enjoy.
Of course, not everything will be included in your hotel’s cost. For example, at our resort of choice, Excellence Playa Mujeres, motorized activities such as get skiing were not included. Examples of activities that were included are: • Windsurfing • Sea kayaking • Snorkeling • Introductory scuba diving lessons • Tennis • Aerobics (regular or water) • Beach volleyball • Table Tennis • Archery • Rifle shooting While I wasn’t able to experience every single activity, I did coerce my girlfriends to join me in the pool for a water aerobics class on our second day in paradise. Though definitely not a class at your local YMCA, it was fun and I appreciated that the instructor ensured that we enjoyed ourselves. The class included lunges, jumping jacks and arm curls as well as other moves. Beach volleyball on the other hand is a definite workout! In fact, doing anything on sand is difficult, (including walking, in my opinion). Coupled with the Caribbean sun, beach volleyball will unquestionably make you break a sweat. 57
There are so many options for vacationers who want to remain active while away from their daily routine. For instance, every evening when the housecleaning service would turn down the room, they would give us a sheet of the next day’s activities. This way we could plan our activity a day in advance. But if you would rather not be pinned down to someone else’s schedule, there was also a fitness center available all day for use at the resort. Another activity I chose to partake in was swimming, of course! Resorts tend to have large pools -- perhaps even several -- so why not spend your vacation doing laps? It’s a relaxing and fun way to get in some physical activity. I certainly recommend staying active while on vacation; if not just for the physical and mental benefits, then for the mere fact that your vacation spot may offer exotic activities you cannot do regularly. Of course the idea is to relax and “vacate” from stress, but nothing will clear your mind like fun, recreational activities at an exotic resort ... especially if you’re already paying for them! Til next time… Fitness Editor, Monique Douglas

sportober is finally here! For some people, when thinking of October, Halloween is the first thing that comes to mind. However, for us sport fans, October means NFL, World Series, College Football, NHL and NBA all in one month ... I think I just heard my belt bust from all of the beer and bar food I am about to consume! So with all of these events and only two Panthers’ home games per month, fans from all sides of town will be venturing out to Charlotte’s hot spots to eat, drink and cheer on their favorite teams. Sure, every bar has a TV, but to celebrate Sportober with good form, I want to make sure I’m getting the most bang for my buck when I leave the sweet view from my couch. Here’s a guide to help you enjoy Sportober to the fullest. Beer geeks who reside in the south part of town are lucky to be close to Charlotte’s new digs, Taco Mac. Located in the heart of Southpark, this Georgia-based chain is well known for its massive draft beer selection, 140 to be exact. And by the time you’re reading this, I’m sure the joke of how they don’t offer tacos or
mac’ and cheese will be old, so I’m not even going to go there. What they do offer is an extensive list of bar food, private tables equipped with personal beer taps, and flat screen TVs, including a 103-inch plasma TV dead smack in the middle of the restaurant. If you can’t get a glimpse of a game here, you may need to go get your eyes checked! A few miles down the road is Braswell’s, located just off Montford Drive, where it’s nearly impossible to miss any game. Braswell’s is fully equipped with the NFL package, ESPN 360 and the College Game Day Package. Plus, you can’t beat their daily drink specials, including $4 shots of Jack on Saturdays and $2 mimosas on Sundays. October weather is probably my favorite time of the year, so it’s nice to take advantage of Braswell’s full-service patio bar equipped with TV’s, and enjoy the games outside! If you can’t make it to see the Panthers take on the Bears at home, why not trek down to the Black Bear Saloon to watch the game. You won’t miss even a second of the action with Black Bear’s 34 TV’s, including personal ones in each booth. Black Bear also offers the option to enjoy the weather and the game simultaneously with their massive patio. If you’re taking in a concert somewhere at the Music Factory and want to keep up with a game before and after the show, stop into the Black Bear. From apps to wraps to entrees, there is plenty of great food to choose from. Come watch the Monday night game here, while taking advantage of service industry night, which means my favorite special: half-off booze! 63
So where do you go in town if you’re looking to (gasp!) root for a team other than the Panthers? Everyone knows that Charlotte is an East Coast melting pot, so transplants loyal to their roots have some options on where to go to find fellow fans. Beantown Tavern in Matthews is obviously a perfect place to watch the Yankees game -- I mean the Redsox game. The owner, Donnie, has always done a phenomenal job of treating guests as if they are a long-time customers, and the attractive bar staff does the same. When the Sox do play the Yankees, you can expect a free hot dog buffet along with a crowd of Boston and New York fans. New England fans can feel at ease here too, surrounded by Patriot flare while watching the game. Unfortunately, Gisele Bundchen is not displayed anywhere, which is the only Patriot flare I care to see. TV’s outside are available under a covered patio along with more than 20 TV’s inside. The menu will not sell you short with options like lobster skins and their famous fall-off-the-bone ribs. B-Town always offers daily alcohol and food specials like $5 burgers on Sundays and half-off wings on Mondays. Hell, you’re losing money if you don’t head up here, regardless of whether or not you’re a Boston fan!
64
Dilworth Neighborhood Grill is Charlotte’s official home of the New York Jets. Dilworth recently made some changes to cater to everyone wanting to enjoy a good view of their TV’s and added a few screens in the main room. DNG is one of the few bars that offer breakfast on both Saturdays and Sundays until 2 p.m. Enjoy bacon and eggs and a $3 Bloody Mary during the game, and wrap things up with a $4 shot of Jager. Other spots worthy of being called transplant headquarters include Dixie’s Tavern, which is Charlotte’s home base for Steeler fans; and Tavern on the Track’s located in Southend, which makes Buffalo, NY transplants feel right at home. While you’re already in South End, pop over to the Icehouse. The Icehouse is located in the old South End Brewery building, and offers a truly unique atmosphere with its high ceilings and ultra-modern translucent roof over the patio. The Icehouse is convenient to the light rail, has plenty of TV’s, offers killer food and more than 250 beers, and even has a game room upstairs to shoot pool and watch sports! Plan to spend all of game day here, or drop in on your way to or from the game Uptown. 65
Epicenter bound? Be sure to stop in to Wild Wing’s for -- you guessed it -- wings available in more than 30 different flavors. After all, what goes together better than football, wings and beer? If you want a more laid-back pub feel, try out the BlackFinn Saloon and take in the game from there. As you can see, this town does not sell us short of any place to watch a game, enjoy good food and inhale a wide variety of beer. I predict by the time Halloween comes I will be sick off candy corn, my Fantasy team will still be in first place and I will pretty much have carved my name on a bar stool at every one of these places. Then November will come and I’ll do it all over again, only this time with turkey and hopefully while watching the Panthers heading into a winning streak. Cheers! Nightlife Editor, Sean Flynn 66
