publisher’s note I hope everyone had an awesome Labor Day weekend; no matter where you were, I hope it was enjoyable. As you can tell from the cover it’s our “Annual Fall Fashion Issue” which means there are lots of Fashion Events coming up in September! We’ll get to more on that next. First, I would like to congratulate Samantha Lindeberg who was the 3rd Annual COVER GIRL SEARCH 2013 winner. You can see more of her on the fashion spread on page 30. Special thanks to JMT Photography, Re: Salon and Med Spa, Terilyn Make-Up Artist, and Bevello for their involvement! Back to some of the many fashion events, here are three of my favorites in the month of September. The first one is new to the fashion scene and it’s called “black. fashion + rock + art” which will be Friday, September 6th at the NC Music Factory in the Fountain Courtyard. The second is “Charlotte Seen Fashion Week” brought to you by Charlotte Seen. It begins Tuesday, September 10th at The Residence Inn Southpark for the kickoff party. On the 11th they are at The Mint Museum Uptown. September 12th they move back to the NC Music Factory in the Fountain Courtyard and to close out the week’s events on the 13th and 14th they will be at Hilton Charlotte Center City. My final favorite is the “4th Annual Style Night Out” put on by Effie at LOTUS, which will be Thursday, September 26th at Morrison Shopping Center. Elevate Lifestyle and dbraun Promotions will be hosting their 7th Annual Pink Party at X Nightclub, the newest addition to Charlotte’s nightlife. Tickets can be purchased at TicketsSoEasy.comcom/PINK7. To see all that’s going on in Charlotte, you can always go ElevateLifestyle.com to be in the know. Also, if you haven’t like us on Facebook please do at Facebook. com/ElevateLifestyle Have a great month, Steve Caldwell

The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte is one of the more than 300 Houses operating worldwide today. The 35,000 square foot House provides a “home away from home” for the families of seriously ill or injured children who travel to Charlotte for medical treatment at Hemby and Levine Children’s Hospitals. When families are able to stay close during a child’s medical care, children get better faster and stay healthy longer. The Ronald McDonald House gives families the most valuable gift of all: time to be together. The House features 28 comfortable guest rooms, each with a private bath, as well as large laundry room, kitchen, dining, living and playrooms. Guests have access to daily meals, family support programs and kid-friendly activities, as well as transportation to and from local hospitals. The Young Professionals Society is a group of individuals, aged 22-39, who volunteer their time, share their talents, and contribute financially to the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte. Founded in 2011, members of YPS volunteer their services in every aspect of daily House operation, host and attend fundraising events, and enjoy social and business networking opportunities. dining Brace yourself for BAKU, the first robata lounge in the Queen City featuring fresh meats and seafood, showcasing an extensive sashimi and sushi list. What is robata you ask? Robata is an innovative style of cooking that literally means “around the fire and originates from a centuries old style of cooking by northern Japanese fishermen around a charcoal fired central hearth. What immediately makes BAKU special is their unexampled approach to concept and technique. Their ancient chemical free coals will impart a unique smoky flavor with temperatures that reach over 800 degrees with a unique late night menu, and electric atmosphere all in the heart of Southpark. Their award winning chefs have obtained national acclaim in publications like Food and Wine, Southern Living, and Vegetarian Times. Though the cuisine will be authentic, executive chef Michael Shortino and Chef Shariat have creative license to inject culinary flair into their creations to also allow them to showcase local Carolina growers and producers. Some of their specialty items will range from selections like rice risotto and forbidden rice sushi.

A preview of their menu reveals small bites like local quail with plum wine that range from $4-12 , salads like roasted beet and spicy tofu that range from $6-12, tempura offerings that range from dayboat grouper to rock shrimp from $8-19, maki rolls like spicy pork and sweet egg from $7-15, robata skewers like diver scallops from $6-15, sashimi/nigiri like Bluefin toro, foie gras, and sturgeon caviar from $12-18, robata meats like tea-brined duck breast from $17-26, robata seafood like giant Madagascar prawns from $18-25 and robata vegetables like coal roasted shishito peppers from $6-9. The first thing patrons will notice will be the open kitchen, centered around the robata and yakitori grills. Some of the décor will include reclaimed wood from a 150 year-old bourbon distillery paired with bamboo as well as hand crafted metal work. BAKU’s cuisine will highlight exquisitely presented shared plates, some served on authentic pottery from Japanese artisans. On the second floor will be their bar and lounge, serving dinner until 11 p.m. and providing bar service until 2 a.m. There, you’ll find a variety of premium sakes as well as signature cocktails, wines and beers to pair perfectly with the cuisine. BAKU is located at 4515 Sharon Road and is open seven days a week. The bars open at 4 p.m. and dinner service is 5 to 11 p.m. The BAKU Lounge is open till 2 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Saturday and Sunday brunch will be offered shortly after the restaurant opens. For more information on the restaurant, please call 704-817-7173 or visit www.baku-restaurant.com. Just Fit I’m sitting down with Alan Threatt, owner of Just Fit. His passion for training started when he was 22 years old. At that time, he said didn’t have an athletic bone in his body; just a strong will to change his physical appearance. Since then, fitness has been the foundation for every accomplishment he has conquered. Until he discovered being fit, Alan said he was the type of individual that never finished anything he started. Fitness has completely changed his life, because of this he has been successful at inspiring clients to be the best person they can be in and outside of the gym. Just Fit opened in 2009 in a small studio less than 1000 sq ft. Alan says he has been so fortunate to have attained the amazing clients that he has over the last few years to help him and his business grow. In April of 2013, he relocated to a 5500 sq ft facility. The new Just Fit is a representation of him Alan says. He wanted his business and the look of his company to remind himself of who he is, and his purpose in life. What is Just Fit? We are a program-based training facility complete with personal training, group fitness classes, nutritional counseling and a range of cardio & training equipment. What’s the layout? As soon you walk in the door at Just Fit, you are welcomed by a

swanky reception area with a unique feel. Beyond the front desk, we have a group fitness classroom, an athletic training area, a private training room as well as a side room with cardio equipment. What types of people typically join? The majority of our clientele are busy professionals, but our clients range from 21 to 78 years old. We make everybody feel at home! Is Just Fit for men and women? Yes, the personal touch we add to each of our programs makes both men and women feel comfortable at our facility. What services do you offer? We offer one-on-one personal training, small group training, sports specific training programs, boot camps (coming soon) and group

fitness classes. What is Les Mills Training? Les Mills is based out of Auckland, New Zealand. Their 13 programs (which range from high intensity cardio and resistance training to step class to stretch and flexibility) renew every three months with new choreography, licensed music and instructor education - creating an invigorating group exercise experience for everyone! With the group training, what is the typical size of each class? The maximum capacity is 20 customers per class, but we try to limit our class size to about 15 people to give customers a more private and personal experience.

21

What types of classes are there? We offer Cardio Kickboxing and Zumba for a high intensity cardio workout. We also offer BodyPump for a strengthening muscle workout, BodyStep which offers a dance thrill to the standard step device, CXWorx which is a 30 minute workout targeting to strengthen and tone your core, and many more! Tell me more about your seasonal boot camp training? We are in the process of developing bootcamps focusing on several categories, from beginners and bridesto-be to couples camps and baby boot camps (for new moms). And we will offer bootcamps at different times of the year such as “Get in Shape for Spring,” “Avoid the Holiday Bulge,” and “New Year, New You.” These bootcamps will include a diet plan guideline and a 60 minute bootcamp twice a week. The program is designed to give you a total body workout. This involves interval training, plyometric and strength conditioning. We will have stations set up both in and outdoors. Each Bootcamp will run for four weeks. The maximum customer per camp is six. How many trainers are there, both men and women? We currently have four certified personal trainers, three males and a female, and nine group fitness instructors which are all female. But we are always looking to grow our staff with experienced professionals!

22

Do you have a nutrition consultant on staff? Yes, each of our trainers provides clients with nutritional guidance. We believe that nutrition is just as important as fitness on a day to day basis. Do you offer fitness assessment? Yes, we offer a complimentary fitness assessment to each of our clients. The purpose of a fitness assessment it to understand your current fitness level and track your progress to meet your fitness goals. This includes: measuring body composition (body fat percentage and measurements), muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. Do you offer instruction on how to eat better and watch your diet? Absolutely! Diet is 80% of the battle. If you’re not meeting basic guidelines for a healthy diet, all of that hard work is being thrown out the window. What’s the cost to join? It depends on the individualized package created for each client. You can take unlimited monthly fitness classes for as low as $45/month or work with a Personal Trainer for as low as $200/month. Is it a monthly fee or pay as you go? Our personal training packages are designed at a monthly rate, but we offer class passes for our group fitness classes if they prefer not to sign up for an unlimited package. Do you limit how many members you have? No, we will never turn a client away. As business grows, so will our staff! Are you planning for more locations in the Charlotte area? Yes! We are planning on opening more training studios more convenient to other parts of Charlotte. We are also planning to open a considerably larger facility that will focus solely on group fitness classes presenting top-of-the-line equipment with several class options offered at the same time! 4446 South Blvd. Charlotte, 28209 704.780.1500 | JustFitCharlotte.com Steve Caldwell, Publisher

Katy Albright At the age of nineteen, Charlotte’s own Katy Albright is well on her way to gaining prestige as a make-up artist. Already, Katy has attended invitation-only-boot-camps to hone her skills and has entered multiple contests, including the North American Hairstyling Awards in Vegas where she won Make-up Artist of the Year. Recently, we sat down with Katy to talk about her newfound recognition as NAHA’s Make-up Artist of the Year, her source of inspiration, and her favorite make-up tips. Elevate Lifestyle: Where do you get your inspiration? Katy Albright: I get a lot of inspiration from other artists, culture, and nature. I like to take shapes or colors from nature and apply that to my make-up. EL: Is there any culture that inspires you more? KA: It depends on the concept. I pull from whichever culture is most relatable to the end result. For my NAHA collection, it was African culture.

EL: How did it feel being named the NAHA Make-up Artist of the Year? KA: It was incredible. I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting it. I went into it knowing either way I would be happy with the results because I knew I’d done a good job. It was super exciting when they called my name – but I was also very nervous. EL: What was your favorite project to work on? KA: Thus far I really love the collection I did for NAHA. But other than that, I really liked doing this other piece that was black-and-white, where the black was textured on the model’s smooth, airbrushed skin. EL: What are your favorite colors to work with? KA: This season, I love warm colors like burgundies and oranges which make the eyes pop. With the recent trends, it’s okay to step out of the box and do something different. EL: What’s a common make-up mistake? KA: Thin, over-plucked eyebrows are a common mistake. People even put the arch in the front instead of the middle of the brow. EL: What make-up items do you never leave the house without? KA: Mascara is always a must, and I love highlights like eliminators. I also have to have my eyebrow pencils, but I think less is more. EL: What’s your favorite era in terms of fashion and style? KA: I really like 20’s make-up, or anything with that vintage feel. I also really love 70’s with the clean, natural make-up that was trendy at that time. EL: What trends do you predict for this coming fall season? KA: Lots of wine and berry colors for lips. Bold eyebrows and geometric eyeliners are going to be in. I also feel like brighter colors like cobalt blues will be in. Even the stained lip – I feel like it’s more wearable because it looks more lived in. EL: What’s your favorite make-up tip? KA: I love using concealer to accentuate certain parts – or to cover flaws, like cleaning up around lipstick or brows to make perfect lines. It makes a huge difference to have a clean complexion. Jami Svay

Raw Sugar Couture — Where Hair Couture Goes Haute Couture! Makeup Artist and Stylist Jami Svay Celebrates the Anniversary of her one year “NEW” Hair Accessory Line Makeup artist and hair stylist to the stars, Jami Svay is recognized from coast to coast as one of the leading edge and sought after celebrity makeup artist — best known for using her unique and extraordinary talents of enhancing natural beauty. “My personal philosophy — everyone has something beautiful, just enhance it.” Jami has worked with celebrities as such, Anthony Hamilton, Michael Jordan, Brooklyn Decker, Americas Next Top Model-Kenyah Hill, and Gretchen Rossi of Real Housewives of Orange County— as well as worked the runway for Oscar de la Renta, Billy Reid and Neiman Marcus. This classic beauty’s talents have been featured in the legendary Essence Magazine, The Knot North Carolina, Charlotte Magazine, Uptown, and a myriad of high end print media and photo shoots . Svay débuted her exclusive line of one of a kind limited edition hair accessories — Raw Sugar Couture, one year ago, August 19, 2012, on Etsy — renowned online

marketplace where only the best in handmade and vintage goods are bought and sold. The chic pieces can also be found at Fab’rik, KK Bloom and The Boulevard boutiques. She recently designed a collection of three exclusive headbands for Madewell, SouthPark Mall, released earlier this year. With this successful launch, Raw Sugar Couture is set to partner again with Madewell, Atlanta, GA, for a prestigious holiday launch. Raw Sugar Couture, founded on the concept of offering an affordable high-end quality and earth friendly product — is where you can find the quintessential accoutrement, the head band, along with other fine hair accessories. The Hip Sculptural Elegance — custom constructed of exquisite vintage and modern fabrics are what makes this line of couture headbands truly unique. The haute hair couture pieces are created by hand using time honored sewing techniques. Each piece is truly a work of art and a creation made especially for you by Jami Svay. With superb styling delivering classic appeal, with a modern twist, these wearable luxuriously sexy hair embellishments have crowned and adorned the beautiful heads of some of the most stunning faces in the world — gracing the pages of Charlotte Style Magazine, Carolina Style, Blu, Linger Magazine, QC Exclusive and Z!nk; and can now so define your style ... Raw Sugar Couture pieces are sure to be one of the most timeless items in your wardrobe. Elevate Lifestyle: What do you consider your single greatest achievement in the industry or personally? Jami Svay: To combine them both, I would have to say collectively my family, and my career. Being able to “balance” — to have and maintain a career supported effusively by my husband Sam of twelve years; and to have my wonderful children, Sean Mykal, 13[credited for being her “go to” when she needs an honest opinion about fashion ideas], and Scott 9 [who wants absolutely nothing to do with fashion, but willing to offer his honest opinion as well], as key players to my sustained success —is thereby my greatest achievement. EL: How was the name “Raw Sugar Couture” fashioned? JS: “Raw” is like the raw form of fashion, the creating process in its raw form. And “Sugar” is one of my favorite spices ... it makes everything sweet — and that’s what my line is — marry them together, and Raw Sugar Couture is born! To learn more about Raw Sugar Couture check out: Facebook.com/RawSugarCouture, Etsy.com/shop/RawSugarCouture, or follow Jami Svay on Twitter@JamiSvay. Sheila Fate, Contributing Writer

Debra’s Guide to The Fall 2013 Trends If you follow my style suggestions, fashion emergencies will be a thing of the past and you will have elite status in the Fashion Mileage frequent “Best Dressed List.” Attending Fall Fashion Events while summer vacations are in full swing feels a bit unusual at times, but finding out what the trends will be and having your list ready as soon as the new goods hit the stores will leave you fabulously fashion ready and make you a trend leader. One of my favorite events is Arlene Goldstein’s Belk Preview event. This fashionista is VP of Trend/Merchandising and Fashion Direction for Belk. Goldstein highlighted that fall is a “season of change” and it is indeed time to edit your closets. Remove items that you will never fit into again or items that should have been donated to charity seasons ago. This allows room for your new fall additions, but there is no need to break the bank. Focus on investing in quality pieces with statement power. The Queen City is home to a plethora of Fashion Events, including Style Night Out. This is a “must attend” event with over 50 local boutiques, salons and makeup artists joining forces for One amazing evening. It is on September 26th @ Morrison Shopping Center at the corner of Sharon Road and Colony Road. “Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers. Style is what you choose.” - Lauren Hutton Until next Time – Debra Ann Kennedy, Lifestyle Editor

Re-Energizes Your Style There’s something about fall that re-energizes our sense of style. You don’t have to completely re-vamp your wardrobe, as beauty routines are ripe for change, and it’s amazing what a big difference a little lipstick in a bold new hue can make. A change of texture for the hair can also make a fresh statement. Metallic replaces matte when it comes to eye shadow and nail polish, and summer’s beachy waves give way to sleek, chic ponytails. Here’s a look at some of Beauty Brands favorite new fall looks that will be demonstrated by their “Beauty Specialist”. Metallic Nails: This fall, think of nails as accessories, with heavy metallic and gilded golds making a statement. Get the 24-karat look with one of this season’s many precious hues from favorite brands like OPI and CND.

Shimmering Lids: Fingers and toes aren’t alone in going for the gold in shades of metallic this season. Paint eyelids in dramatic washes of gilt, silver, and copper, or dust on a little for subtle shimmer. At Beauty Brands, you can choose from powder and cream shadows and layer them on as you wish. Stila and Too Faced offer day and night options. And for a more dramatic effect, line your eyes with stunning cobalt for a fun change from black!. Eye palette to try: Too Faced Natural at Night Eye Shadow Sexy & Sultry Neutral Eye Shadow Kit, $36. Lips Like Wine: Set aside summer sips of Chardonnay and effervescent rosé. It’s time to raise a luscious glass of deep Merlot or Pinot Noir to your lips. Anyone can wear these dramatic, black cherry hues. The trick is choosing the consistency that’s right for you, from long wearing crème lipsticks to sheer, glossier versions. And they look great with the pale, porcelain complexion that’s trending for fall. Recommended luxe lipsticks: Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick in Wild, $26 and Too Faced La Crème Lip Cream in Divine Wine, $21. Do the Pony: There’s no better way to frame a flawless, polished face than by gathering tresses into a ladylike pony tail. There are many ways to style it, from a bouffant crown to a deep side part to ballerina sleek. At Beauty Brands you’ll find straightening creams and weatherproof sprays, as well as tools to help create the smoothest look. Get the look with TIGI Bed Head Straighten Out Straightening Cream, $17.98 and AG Frizzproof Anti-Humidity Spray, $23.98. All products above are available at BeautyBrands.com
