FRESH FACES JUMP INTO THE LAND OF GREAT FACES

4

As a big fan of the 1980s glam rock genre, I’m always looking back so I can feel good about looking forward— with one eye on my spandex, leather, and Aquanet, and the other on what’s coming towards me on the open road. What decision should I make? Where should I go out to eat tonight? How should I handle a challenging colleague at work? Let the big hair and eyeliner decide. Let the lyrics flow like beer at a Mötley Crüe afterparty. Yes—I make many life decisions based on song lyrics from bands like Winger, Warrant, Poison, Ratt, and even the all-female lineup of Vixen. So when I saw the theme of this month’s magazine— Fresh Faces of the Black Hills—the first thing that popped into my mind was a verse that could have been written by Shakespeare, but was actually written by the glam-metal poet David Lee Roth: Ah, might as well jump (jump) Go ahead and jump Might as well jump (jump) Go ahead and jump Welcome to this issue of Elevate, where we present some families who made the leap to Rapid City—the 36th fastest-growing city in the country. And they’re not just coming for tourism or retirement. They’re coming for the quality of life and the jobs. Panama City, Sioux Falls, Miami, and Phoenix. What do they have in common? They are just some of the hundreds of cities where young people are leaving for the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. And we hope you enjoy their stories as much as we have. Of course, we can hardly blame them for coming. They’ve discovered what we’ve all known for a while. This place is pretty cool. And it’s only getting cooler. So cool, you might as well jump. Stay safe and God-speed.

At 9 years old, Rocío Díaz knew she would be a doctor after watching episodes of Rescue 911, a television series featuring reenactments of emergencies.

“It’s not about doctors, but I thought it was the best thing. It really motivated me and ignited this desire to help others. After that, I was fixated on the idea of being a doctor, and I wouldn’t stop until seeing it to fruition.” Rocío’s pursuit has brought her from Panama to Tennessee to Nebraska and Oregon and finally to South Dakota, a move that reunited her with husband, Dr. Colin Brown. Rocío, a fellowship-trained retina specialist, moved to Rapid City last summer and began working for Rapid City Medical Center. It was the first time in four years that her and her husband, originally from South Dakota, lived in the same community. Born and raised In Panama City, Rocío discovered at an early age the importance of learning to speak both Spanish and English, a skill that benefited her career. “My dad worked on the Panama Canal Commission while it was under the U.S. Government. He spoke English with his colleagues all the time. He also earned his master’s degree at the University of Oklahoma. He knew how important it was to communicate in both languages."

Rocío and her two younger sisters attended a bilingual school and as a teenager Rocío traveled to Virginia for an exchange program where she expanded her understanding of the English language. “That’s how I learned what slippers are,” Rocío laughed. Rocío attended medical school in Panama and then interned for two years. She worked as a general practitioner while she prepared to apply for residency.

Ophthalmology was not her first choice as a specialty. “I entertained the idea of internal medicine and radiology, but there is nothing like ophthalmology. It is just so beautiful. It hit all the bullet points I wanted to do as a physician. I wanted to see patients and do surgery. I wanted to see both genders, kids, adults, the elderly. Ophthalmology gave me the opportunity to do everything that I like.”

“there is so much nature, trails, parks, lakes. and knowing the history too, how sacred it is for Native americans. It makes it very special." - RocÍa DÍaz

Rocío decided moving to the United States was the best way to continue her training. “I love my home country, but it is very unstable training situation for doctors learning a specialty. Sometimes hospitals go on strike and there are no elective procedures. This was a critical time for me to learn these skills. I really want to drive for the best and the best opportunity was for me to train in the United States.”

Her opportunity to work in the United States came unexpectedly while attending the 2012 American Academy of Ophthalmology conference in Chicago. Rocío met another ophthalmologist who needed a research fellow in Memphis. That began the young doctor’s career in the United States. Following her work as a research fellow, Rocío completed her ophthalmology residency at the Hamilton Eye Institute in Tennessee and then moved to Omaha to train as a retina fellow at the Truhlsen Eye Institute University of Nebraska Medical Center where she met Colin who was working on his ophthalmology residency. After her fellowship she hoped to move with Colin, however, because of her immigration status she needed a job that allowed a special type of Visa. Rocío

The two married in October 2020 in Rapid City. While Rocío worked in Oregon for three years, Colin started building his practice in Rapid City. At the end of her three years, Rocío moved to South Dakota with the couple’s daughter Sandra who was born in November 2022. “If feels like we are creating our home now. We are all together.”

Despite being far from her family in Panama, Rocío said she loves living in Rapid City and is building a life here both personally and professionally. She is impressed with the community’s focus on improving specialized medical care, recruiting physicians, and creating new opportunities.

“It is a city that has everything. The people are particularly nice, and it is a safe environment. The downtown area is beautiful with shops and restaurants. There is always something to do. There is so much nature, trails, parks, lakes. And knowing the history too, how sacred it is for Native Americans. It makes it very special.” *

moved to Medford, Oregon, and worked at the prestigious Retina Care Center. Originally, Colin and Rocío planned to move together, however, the pandemic hit, and the job market declined, especially in ophthalmology. “I would say it was the hardest hit specialty in the entire medical field because there are not too many emergencies. If patients seemed fine, they would postpone appointments.”

YOUNG COUPLE FINDS HOME AWAY FROM HOME IN RAPID CITY

obert Julian and Katelyn Flowers-Velasquez love exploring different places – the food, the culture, the people. The couple, both in their 30s, have traveled between both coasts and across continents.

But when Julian’s friend told him about an IT job for Katelyn in South Dakota, Julian hesitated in telling his southwestern-born girlfriend about the opportunity.” I thought, “My Phoenix girl is never going to want to move to South Dakota.’” He was wrong.

“We moved, and I have loved it ever since,” Katelyn said.

The couple, who moved from Sioux Falls to Rapid City last fall, said they have found a second home in the Mt. Rushmore State and have enjoyed learning the nuances of Midwest life and culture.

“We wanted to try something new,” Julian said of moving to South Dakota in 2018. “It allowed us to rely on each other which was huge because we had no family nearby.” The couple, however, found a second family with the people they met while here.

Katelyn is a senior security analyst at Black Hills Energy, an opportunity that brought them west from Sioux Falls, and Julian works at Wells Fargo.

“On my very first day at work, Julian picked me up and we drove down Mt. Rushmore Road. It was September, and it was gorgeous. You saw the whole city,” Katelyn said.

Julian added, “You could see the change from the flatlands to the Hills to the Mountains. It was like living in three separate places. That is not something you see in Arizona or Texas.”

The couple met in 2014 in Phoenix through friends. Katelyn was earning her master’s degree at Arizona State University, and Julian was stationed at a nearby Air Force base. Both instantly connected over their love for adventure, food, and cats. “The second time I saw him he was wearing a cat shirt,” Katelyn said of Julian. Katelyn earned her master’s in 2015 and began working for a local school district. Her boss encouraged her to figure out what area of technology she was passionate which led her to a certificate in security. She is currently going to school for her doctorate.

After Katelyn accepted the job with the City of Sioux Falls, Julian decided to leave the Air Force and support her in her career. The two married on 10/10/2020. Katelyn worked with the City of Sioux Falls

“We have met such amazing people along the way. That’s the big thing that brought us to Rapid City. I met these guys through Cyber Council, and they seemed so close knit,” Katelyn said. The couple has missed some of the amenities of a bigger city, but has enjoyed the four seasons, the hospitality, and some new foods.

“I can totally get behind tater tot hotdish and salads that aren’t really salads,” laughed Julian referring to pistachio and Oreo salads.

"Rapid is a city that allows people to be comfortable, to be happy and feel like they are at home." - Robert Julian Julian and Katelyn like that Rapid City is a thriving community where people watch out for each other.

“Rapid is like a big city set in a rural area. Any business that wants to grow needs people and people need to feel at home to be comfortable. Rapid is a city that allows people to be comfortable, to be happy and feel like they are at home.”

Katelyn and Julian love exploring the area with their two dogs, Kara and Kal-el. “There are so many things you can see and do. We made our own peanut butter the other day,” Katelyn said. “Each season brings something new to do.” While they still have a desire to be closer to their family, Julian and Katelyn said being in Rapid City is the first time they felt at home since leaving Arizona. “We can easily see ourselves staying here and making it home,” Julian said. *

fter growing up and living in eastern South Dakota for many years, Bri Vande Pol and her husband decided it was time for a change of scenery for their adventure-seeking family. They didn’t have to travel far to find the change they were looking for; they set their sights on the west side of the state and planted roots in Rapid City. Bri is not afraid of embracing the unknown; after she finished college, she started her own wedding photography business, which led her on many adventures. She hit the road in a sprinter van, photographing weddings and traveling from one side of the country to the other. After her sprinter van adventures ended, Bri returned

to Sioux Falls and led the marketing initiatives at Think 3D, an organization that focuses on leadership development and work culture. During this time, she worked in downtown Sioux Falls which helped instill a love for downtowns and the vibrant experiences they bring to communities. “There is just something special about a city’s downtown: the local shops and the one-of-a-kind experiences are what makes a place unique and memorable,” she explained.

Bri credits her mother and younger brother, who moved to the Black Hills a few years ago, for being the catalyst for her family's move to Rapid City. Visiting opened their eyes to the wide range of experiences accessible in the Black Hills, and as nature enthusiasts, they were thrilled with the endless opportunities to spend time outside. Since Bri and her family made the move, they have fully embraced Rapid City and all the Black Hills have to offer. On the weekends, they can be found hiking, trying new restaurants downtown, or doing house projects on their new home which has beautiful views of the Hills “Our weekends have been a non-stop adventure, and our kids have seamlessly become part of their daycare and school communities,” Bri said. “Hiking has become a weekend tradition for us. We love Buzzards Roost and our kids can’t

get enough of the views from Stratobowl. We loved getting to spend time at Pactola on the pontoon last summer. It’s been so amazing having these things in our backyard.” Bri and her husband have both recently transitioned into new jobs, “I'm the Marketing Manager for Downtown Rapid City, and my husband works at Diamond Vogel downtown. It's incredibly rewarding to contribute to the city's energy and be a part of its growth.” In the short time Bri has lived here she has made a lot of memories, but there are so many things she’s still looking forward to, “I’m excited to start building connections and getting to know the local downtown businesses. Immersing myself in the community feels like the perfect way to keep making Rapid City feel like home.” *

and their daughters started spending most of their free time traveling to Rapid City from their home in Sioux Falls, as it was already starting to feel like a home. When a marketing position in Rapid City presented itself, Bri felt like the universe was sending her a sign to take a leap and officially make the Black Hills home.

lint Cox knew he needed a change.

The Miami hotel management and consulting company he worked for was going through some transition, and the Texas native decided it was a good time to move on. After earning his MBA from Florida International University, Clint began his search for something new.

That something new brought Clint to the Black Hills where he traded his flip flops and beach views for four seasons and pine trees.

sold me. I didn’t know the Black Hills were what they were. When I saw the cabins, I knew I wanted to live in the Hills – the seclusion, the beauty, and the nature.”

Clint is now the Regional Director of Operations at Presidential Hospitality where he oversees six hotels, five in the Black Hills and one in North Dakota. It wasn’t just the beauty of the area that had Clint moving half way across the country last February. He found a company and CEO that shared his values. “It was an instant connection. strong positive culture that took care of employees. That is what I found.” Clint started working in hospitality as a janitor for Extended Stay America while in college. He wanted a job that he could easily do while getting his undergraduate degree in political science from Baylor University.

He quickly moved to the front desk, charming guests with his outgoing personality. “I never thought about management. I wanted to be a speech writer and political strategist. However, other people saw things in me that I didn’t see in myself.” Clint eventually became the area operations manager, working for Extended Stay American for nearly a

decade, before being hired on with a new hotel management company. He worked with many people throughout his time in hospitality including a former front desk agent who told him about the job in South Dakota. “I was sort of a mentor to her, so we stayed close. I tried to get her to come work with me in Florida with several times.”

However, at that time his friend lived in the Black Hills and worked for Chris Connelly at Presidential Hospitality. “She reached out to me around the same time that I was looking for something different. She said the company was looking for a regional director of operations and had a great owner and great culture.”

Clint, who moved last February, has jumped into his new role and is learning everything about the area. He recently graduated from Visit Rapid City’s Certified Tourism Ambassador program and has encouraged his employees to do that same. “I really want to make sure in our company that we are doing a good job at being ambassadors for the area and educating our guests on

everything there is to do here. It is really a world class tourism destination, and the more people know about it the better it will be for our economy.”

Clint, an only child, has even convinced his parents to spend their summers in the Black Hills. Although Clint is far from the ocean and sandy beaches of Florida, he says he now lives and works in paradise.

“I’ve relocated for work before, but I’ve never got to say that it has been everything, the company, the beauty of the environment and the people. I just didn’t want to move someplace where I would be for a year. I wanted something long term. The company had to be right, and the community had to be right. That is what I found here.” *

elevaterapidcity.com

Although his friend moved out of South Dakota, Clint decided to reach out. “It is the best decision in my life to move to Rapid City. I just got a good vibe that the risk involved in making the change was mitigated by the fact that Chris was a really good person with a good company that cared for his employees. He has proven me right time and time again.”
