Fenerbahce fans chant Vladimir Putin’s name Events took an ugly turn when Fenerbahce fans started chanting Russian president Vladimir Putin’s name at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul after falling behind to Dynamo Kyiv. Fenerbahce and Dynamo Kyiv were locked in a Champions League qualifier where the Ukrainian outfit triumphed 2-1 over the hosts in extra time to progress to the next round. Ismail Yuksek received a red card and soon Vitaliy Buyalskyi went on to score the opener. Attila Szalai equalised in the dying embers of regulation time but Oleksandr Karavayev scored in the 114th minute to keep the hopes alive for a UEFA Champions League berth for Dynamo.

What happened after Vitaliy Buyalskyi’s opener? After Buyalskiy scored the goal he went towards the Fenerbahce stand and tried to provoke the fans. This irked the supporters and they started chanting in favour of Putin. The cheering continued for a few minutes while another set of fans showed their solidarity with Ukraine. After the match, Dynamo Kyiv coach, Mircea Lucescu, refused to attend the press conference as a mark of protest. Will Fenerbahce be punished? It is yet to be determined whether Fener will face sanctions as a result of the behaviour from certain members of their fan base, but UEFA has confirmed that it will be opening an investigation into the matter.

18 | EK MAG | ISSUE 29, July 2022

A statement from European football’s governing body reads: “In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding alleged misbehaviour of Fenerbahçe supporters during the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, second leg match between Fenerbahçe SK and FC Dynamo Kyiv played on 27 July 2022 in Istanbul, Turkey.” The club, meanwhile, has issued a statement saying that it does not condone or support the chants, pointing to the club’s support of Ukraine since the start of the crisis and a friendly played against Shakhtar Donetsk to promote peace.

What next for Fenerbahce? After being eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers, the Turkish outfit will try to seal a Europa League berth and will participate in the third qualifying round of the competition. They are set to lock horns against Czech side Slovacko on August 4 at home in the first leg of the tie.

England win first Euro title in thrilling extra-time finish England were crowned European champions for the first time on Sunday as Chloe Kelly sealed a 2-1 win over Germany late into extra-time during the final at Wembley. The nation had never before lifted the title at senior level, in the men’s or women’s game, but they prevailed in front of a huge capacity crowd to cap a memorable summer for Sarina Wiegman’s charges.

England crowned champions Wiegman’s team had advanced from Group A with three wins and nine points and subsequently dispatched Spain and Sweden in the knockout stages to reach the final.

Germany in turn had also progressed through the competition with a perfect record of five wins, setting up an enthralling fixture at Wembley. It was England who drew first blood, scoring via Ella Toone just after the hour. But just when they thought the title was closing, Lina Magull struck to equalise with just 11 minutes left to play to send the game to extra-time, where Kelly proved the difference as she turned home from short range to finally seal victory.

Why the Women’s Euros has to change the game forever

It was the day before the 2022 Women’s Euros final and Svenja Huth was the player put up for Germany’s pre-match press conference. As she took her seat at the top table, she looked ahead and saw a room packed with media – not a single seat spare. She grabbed her phone and took a picture. Huth has won the Euros before, she has won two Champions League titles and an Olympic gold medal. But even she was taken aback by the sight. It was a moment that perfectly encapsulated what a defining summer it has been for the sport. There has been a lot of talk about what this record-breaking tournament could do for England. After they beat Germany in the final, thanks to Chloe Kelly’s extra20 | EK MAG | ISSUE 29, July 2022

time strike, there is even more excitement about what is next for the domestic game. The hosts have drawn the biggest crowds - including the record-breaker in the final - and the perception of the Lionesses in the eyes of the public has changed massively over the course of their run to the final. Murals have been painted up and down of the country of the players. Beers have been named after them. There are football fans all over England with the names of these women on their shirts. Before, it was common to see young girls with Lucy Bronze or Fran Kirby printed on their backs. Now, you see people of all ages sporting as much, with men in pubs singing ‘Beth Mead’s on fire’. This hasn’t happened before.

Why the Women’s Euros has to change the game forever “I think what we’ve seen is that this hasn’t just been a change for women’s football, but society in general,” England captain Leah Williamson said on Saturday, the day before final. “Tomorrow is not the end of the journey, but the start of one. We’ve really started something. I want this to be a mark for the future.” Before the tournament, Kayleigh Grieve, who works in women’s football marketing and sponsorship at UEFA, spoke to the Footballco Business Podcast about criticisms of the size of the event’s stadia. “We also haven’t quite got to [a point yet] where we have huge travelling fans behind women’s football,” she said, outlining the factors behind the choice of venues. “I think the Women’s Champions League final was the first time we saw with Barcelona, a huge swathe of people coming to an away game and travelling for that.” The yellow of Sweden has taken over whole streets, the Netherlands’ party bus made its way to England as it did to France for the 2019 World Cup, and Iceland fans turned the Manchester City Academy stadium into – as the family of one player described it – the team’s own little home. When the venues were picked in 2017, choosing smaller grounds might have seemed appropriate for where the game was then, but the progress has accelerated in such a way that some players were struggling to even get tickets for their families this summer. The development will only continue at that rapid rate now, but it should not just be at this highest level. It should not just be that when the World Cup comes around next summer, or the Euros return in three years, that people get excited. This moment should be capitalised on to improve the women’s game as a whole. Imagine the impact that Belgium’s historic run to a first quarter-final source: goal.com

images: yandex.com/images

could have, for example. The star of their tournament was Nicky Evrard – a goalkeeper who is still not a full-time footballer. Even Germany, the eight-time European champions, have a league that is still not fully professional. Some grounds in the Frauen-Bundesliga don’t even have scoreboards. England might have had a sold-out Wembley Stadium cheering for them on Sunday, but the Women’s Super League is still looking to hit average attendances of just 6,000 by 2024. This tournament should be celebrated for the success it has been, of course. But it should also serve to highlight some of the shortcomings that exist on a day-to-day basis in the women’s game. “It’s not just an event that’s here and everybody is happy about it. Something has to continue,” Germany head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg pondered. “There has to be the chance for countries to make the next steps in women’s football. “If not now, when will it happen?” ISSUE 29, July 2022 | EK MAG | 21

Ultimate Chelsea dream team Lampard, Drogba & Terry but no Kante or Carvalho Chelsea are one of the most successful English clubs in the 21st century, with the Roman Abramovich era truly transforming them into a continental giant. Five Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies, interspersed with multiple FA Cup wins, have only highlighted that fact.

RB: Cesar Azpilicueta The current Chelsea captain is an automatic choice at right-back. Though Branislav Ivanovic could stake a claim, it is safe to say that Azpilicueta has earned this spot after a decade of exemplary service, featuring nearly 500 appearances in all competitions.

However, Chelsea have some magical moments even before Abramovich took over. They won their first English title in 1955 and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971 and 1998. Safe to say, then, that Chelsea fans have quite a few heroes over the years.

CB: John Terry Captain. Leader. Legend. If there was ever a Chelsea player who fit this description, it was John Terry. This warrior of a centreback was considered one of the greatest defenders of his generation.

CB: Ron Harris

GK: Petr Cech Petr Cech is an absolute legend at Chelsea, having made 494 appearances for the Blues and helping them win multiple honours. However, his choice as the goalkeeper of the Ultimate Chelsea XI was not so straightforward. 22 | EK MAG | ISSUE 29, July 2022

The all-time appearance record for Chelsea, with 795 games, but longevity is not the only reason why Ron Harris makes our Ultimate Chelsea XI. He was the face of the club during the ‘60s and ‘70s, holding the team together with his tenacity and commitment to the cause.

LB: Ashley Cole Cole might have started his career at London rivals Arsenal, but he enjoyed a huge amount of success at Chelsea after a controversial cross-town move in 2006.

Ultimate Chelsea dream team

CDM: Claude Makelele Often considered one of best defensive midfielders of his generation, Claude Makelele was highly acclaimed during his time at Chelsea.

XI simply has to feature the brilliant Gianfranco Zola, one of English football’s greatest ever imports.

CM: Michael Essien Is Essien’s inclusion in this team over N’Golo Kante justified? There will no doubt be plenty of people who will disagree. We’d certainly be the first to acknowledge that by the time Kante concludes his career at Stamford Bridge, he’ll be a sure-fire pick for this position.

LW: Eden Hazard Indeed, Hazard’s trickery, pace, dribbling and goalscoring ability made him one of the most feared forwards in the Premier League.

CF: Didier Drogba Didier Drogba was the definition of ‘talismanic striker’ for Chelsea fans, leading the club’s attack with aplomb from 2004 to 2012. He even came back for a season, in 201415, and helped the club win the league again. He scored more than 160 goals across his two spells at Stamford Bridge.

CM: Frank Lampard Chelsea’s greatest-ever player? Certainly, Lampard rivals Terry for that particular title. The all-action English midfielder definitely played a huge role in Chelsea’s rise to the top of English football in the 21st century. With 211 goals in 648 appearances, he is the club’s all-time record goalscorer, while he also won four Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, a Champions League and a Europa League.

Chelsea secure £47.5m Sterling signing as England star leaves Manchester City for Premier League title rivals Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, with the England international leaving the Premier League champions to seek a new opportunity at Stamford Bridge. The 27-year-old was a priority target for the Blues this summer, who were looking to revamp their attack under Thomas Tuchel following a mixed season up front.

How much will Chelsea pay for Sterling? GOAL can confirm that Chelsea have paid £47.5 million ($57m) to sign Sterling, who had one year left on his contract at City. It is the first major piece of incoming business for the Todd Boehly era at Stamford Bridge, with the American businessman overseeing transfers during his first summer as the club’s owner.

What is Sterling’s Chelsea salary and contract length?

Other candidates to join Sterling in the attacking positions are Mason Mount, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic, though the latter trio could all be loaned or sold before the end of the summer.

Sterling sale could come back to bite Man City The view from GOAL’s Manchester City correspondent, Jonathan Smith:

Sterling has signed a five-year contract at Chelsea, which will tie him to the Blues until the summer of 2027, though the deal also includes the option of an extra year.

Raheem Sterling’s legacy at Manchester City will be as one of the most important and successful players of Pep Guardiola’s reign.

Reports suggest Sterling will earn in excess of £300,000-per-week at Chelsea, making him Chelsea’s highest earner.

No one has played more minutes, only Sergio Aguero has more goals and only Kevin De Bruyne has more assists during a trophy-laden era at the Etihad Stadium.

Where will Sterling play for Chelsea? Sterling will be expected to play on the left wing in his preferred position, in support of Kai Havertz, who occupied a false 9 role at times during the 2021-22 campaign. 24 | EK MAG | ISSUE 29, July 2022

However his impact has become less pronounced over the past two seasons. Chelsea will offer a fresh start and an opportunity to rediscover his very best form, particularly in an important few months which peaks with the World Cup in Qatar. source: binance.com

Lewandowski, Laporta & levers: Barcelona risk bankruptcy with biggest bet in club history Europe’s super clubs are a bit like banks. They may be even less responsible with money but they certainly buy into the concept of being ‘Too big to fail’.

term gains will quickly put them back on their pedestal.

In the world of economics, the idea is that certain banks should not be allowed to go under, no matter how badly they are run. As we saw during the recession, some governments decided to intervene when banks left themselves on the verge of bankruptcy, offering financial support in order to ensure that they could continue trading.

The fans don’t care, of course. They are snapping up Lewandowski jerseys at such a rapid rate that the club shop is running out of the letter ‘w’. That’s obviously unsurprising. After incessant and depressing talk of potential bankruptcy, their beloved Blaugrana have a new No.9 and a bona fide superstar, one that reinforces the idea that Barca remain an irresistible attraction for great players, no matter what state the club finds itself in.

Laporta’s shock summer spending spree You see, while the president may change at Barca, the approach to stellar signings remains the same.

The Lewandowski effect

Lewandowski, after all, fought hard to make this transfer happen, so hard in fact that he upset Bayern with his antics.

Indeed, Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann spoke for many within the footballing world this week when he remarked, “They got a lot of new players, not only Robert. I don’t know how to be honest. “It’s the only club in the world that can buy players without money. It’s kind of weird and crazy.”

Laporta and his levers Laporta has just raised €582m (£495m/$591) by selling 25 per cent of the club’s Liga broadcasting rights for the next 25 years, and now plans to raise further funds by selling 49.9% of Barca Licensing and Merchandising (BLM), which handles retail and marketing. Essentially, Barca are mortgaging their future in the hope that significant shortsource: goal.com

Defensive deficiencies Serious questions remain, though, over the defence, which is still being protected by a 34-year-old Sergio Busquets, and particularly in the full-back berths. Jordi Alba is 33 while Sergino Dest has yet to convince, which is why Barca are believed to be chasing both Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta of Chelsea. ISSUE 29, July 2022 | EK MAG | 25
