Other Worlds WINTER 2013 ISSUE
Hayden’s explores the creative impulse through visual stories.
We hope to inspire you.
Letter
From The Editor Hello everyone, As the year draws to a close, we’re happy to share with you our sixth issue of Hayden’s Magazine, Other Worlds. This year, we’ve also got a new website for Haydens www.haydensmagazine.com. This issue features the works of 18 incredibly talented emerging and established artists. It’s our biggest issue yet. Through their works, we challenge what art is and what it can be - viewed and experienced from media as varied as photography, illustration, graphic art, film, mixed media and poetry. There’s texture and subtlety as well as bright colors and breathtaking landscapes. Today in our world we enjoy many conveniences born of the digital era. This has changed what a ‘magazine’ can do and be. We’re happy to offer multimedia within our web magazine and our website. We hope to grow this so it becomes an immersive experience for you, our visitor, so that you can join, experience and contribute in the best way. Other Worlds has two feature artists, James Appleton, landscape photographer and Justin Maller, illustrator and creative director. We’ve got art works ranging from lego sculptures by Nathan Sawaya, the brick artist to dramatic landscapes of Greenland and Iceland by Vladimir Donkov. Our contributors work in areas as varied as
the wilderness of Oregon to the remote northern regions of Europe. Creating Hayden’s has been a labor of love. Jose A. Garrido and I have created your new layout and website. Jose has brought a terrific new style to the magazine. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you. All the best,
Jan Manon

James Appleton is one of the most exciting UK-based landscape and travel photographers. Tackling arctic snowstorms, erupting volcanoes and ice-bound winter mountainsides. He’s traveled extensively around the UK and overseas, from the rooftops of the Dolomites to the deserts of Jordan. Aside from capturing these incredible displays of light and magnificent scenery, back home in London he makes his living through a huge variety of photographic services. A self-professed “light chaser, James has traveled far and wide to photograph memorable moments across the globe. His work has been featured in publications such as Wired, Na-
tional Geographic, Der Spiegel and more. Adventurous enough to traverse glaciers and balance over crevasses, James loves pitting himself against the elements. He is willing to go the extra mile to capture special unforgettable moments in time.

I have a feeling that even when I get to sit and look back at the end of my career, watching the swirling northern lights dancing over a volcanic eruption is still going to be one of the best things I’ll have ever seen.

SOMEDAY OUR PEACE WILL COME ~ Poetry by Ellyn Maybe ~
One day poetry dropped from the sky And the animals grew iambic pentameter tails And the people breathed in stars One day music dropped from the sky And the architecture turned symphonic And the people breathed in harmony One day memory dropped from the sky And the past present and future sifted like flour And the people breathed in wonder Smoke and ash As distant as two sides of the same coin

Justin embarked on a project of creating an image a day for every day of the year. The result has been incredibly creative. Take a look: http://facet.la/ Justin Maller is an Australian freelance illustrator and art director. He has been creating digital art for over twelve years, and has produced professionally in both a private and studio based capacity for the last six. Justin has had the pleasure of producing illustrations and concept art for a diverse array of companies and publications worldwide, and enjoys a cordial collaborative relationship with many brands, agencies and studios. He is also the Creative Director of The
Depthcore Collective, an international modern art collective he established in June 2002. Work aside, he enjoys hurting himself playing basketball, being bossed around by his Shiba Inu overlord and rambling incoherently on twitter.

Perhaps it's because Benoit Courti was a music composer in his past life that his photos have a lyrical feel. A professional portrait and art photographer since 2010, the Parisbased creative has made a beautiful set called Deep Black where he's staged a series of symbols against black backdrops. While some of these
photos appear light and playful, still others have an emotional heaviness about them that can't be denied. "Illuminating simple subjects, minimal compositions whilst preserving a strong expressiveness". Courti says was the thought behind this series. (T.Pedrosa)

PEOPLE ~ Poetry by Ellyn Maybe ~
There are people Who hold an abridged tablet Of the ten commandments In the space between their teeth and jaw. There are people Who come into a room With stardust on their breath Like a lullaby of backward halitosis. There are people Who hold the planets together By clicking their achilles heels three times. There are people Who skywrite Without an airplane Without a net. There are people Who twirl a room Like a rodeo for the sheepish. There are people Who have bowling parties in their pajamas While the rest of the world Seems like a pin Waiting for an angel to step out onto the dance floor.
There are people Who seem to have eyeball upon eyeball Like gumballs in an arcade of vision. There are people Who walk into a room A thermometer preceding them. There are people Who wear their weather like perfume. 67
There are people Who know the cuckoo is the state bird Of most states of mind. There are people Who went to the same high school And spent each recess In the lost and found room Uttering their phonetic name. There are people Who will have conversations Deep as deathbed soliloquies And never speak again. There are people Who make whatever street they’re on Telegraph avenue 1964.
There are people Who write a shopping list In hieroglyphics. There are people Who look up at the sun 8000 Times a day And lack an eclipse. There are people Who drag questions From the tongue Like photos one second Before the crisp of a fire. There are people Who ask nothing And your heart sits like a blank check In a bookstore that sells only elegy. There are people With a little past Behind their ears. There are people With a newscast on their eyebrows. There are people
No matter how many apples they held Teachers resented them. There are people Who ring many doorbells But won’t let themselves in. There are people Who light candles half the week And swallow swords the rest. 69
There are people Who memorize the footprints Made by the snow. There are people Who dine on shivers. There are people Who chew on icicles All year round. There are people Who pray With the nostalgia of baseball. There are people Who laugh at life Openmouthed like a kiss.

Reuben Wu (b. 1975) is a photographer and musician currently living in Chicago, Illinois. Wu is a keyboardist, producer and songwriter of the electronic band, Ladytron. Wu is the Artist in Residence at Latitude and has upcoming exhibitions at Rational Park and Schneider Gallery, both in Chicago. Reuben Wu’s photographs steadfastly sit somewhere between 1970s concept album art, expeditionary imagery and Surrealist painting. The remnants of his processes – chemicals dragged arduously across the sensitized paper surface, infrared film shifting the world’s natural hues, light leaking into the camera and hitting the film plane — leave traces of their varied journeys embedded in the final image. Wu’s physical journey is a similar one; he treks with cameras in tow to places that, for most of us, are left to those who fall into the category of “explorer.” His photos evoke the real and unreal, the familiar and foreign. Reuben’s work has appeared in Wired, Gizmodo and others.
