Letter Hello Hayden’s readers, Every successful endeavour requires will. Will is what drives you to achieve your goals. This drive compels you to acquire further education; pull together people and resources; create your perfect daily schedule; and do what needs to be done to get further ahead in achieving your dreams, whatever they may be. Your will is predicated on courage - where you have courage in your heart to face unknowns and your fears and rise above them; to do something new; and to believe in yourself and your idea. It’s only fitting then that we call our 2017 Hayden’s issue Courage. Most of us are also looking to be understood, to be loved and to be appreciated. For a creative individual, this desire is tied to self-expression and creating original works. Have we created the space for this kind of connection to grow in our community? I think we have on some level, and it is my hope that we nurture this so that we can live out what Belle Harpen and Kathy Lubar described in Leadership Presence as community: “a place where people engage with one another and unlock their most generous selves.” We’re thrilled to share with you our new podcast, Stardust that will be available this year in iTunes.

Thank you our reader and our friend, for traveling along with us on this journey of self-expression, where we seek meaning, belonging and creative fulfillment. “Courage” is also the name of a song by our feature artist, Conor O’Brien of the Villagers. It’s what our feature photographer Mikko Lagerstadt exhibits when he is capturing brief, amazing moments through his photographs in the northernmost regions of Scandinavia. It’s evident in the emotions of captive wild animals so beautifully expressed and revealed in black and white photographs by Lukas Holas. It’s apparent in the vulnerability and sensual beauty of the people that Benoit Courti photographs and places in beautifully crafted compositions. This issue showcases the work of 20 artists and also the works of two conservation organizations. We live in a time where animals no longer are predators, but live at our mercy. It takes courage to see them differently. We hope sharing this with you will encourage you to be more caring and to act as stewards where you live. Over the last two years, we’ve been showcasing artwork from Hayden’s in galleries in the U.S., U.K. and Europe. We’ve experimented with displaying largescale multimedia installations in a variety of settings and also showing artwork in traditional galleries. This year, we continue our gallery exhibition with the addition of our podcast!

I wear romantic disappointment on my skin like perfume. If you stand too close you will have the sudden need to sneeze. I ride seesaws continually in my mind. I am the splinter in life’s finger and the glow of an ember. I’m a glutton for astonishment. I feast on the banquet of bright ideas. I’m a round girl in a square dance. I confound the puzzle pieces that seem to fit. I’m an apple that wishes to be a pear. I am my own centerpiece. I dress in the maps of forgotten continents. I am peeling the onion of lost languages in one glance. I’m a nightlight in a cave. I wait for the moon to peek in.

BENOITCOURTI@FACEBOOK.COM Perhaps it’s because Benoit Courti was a music composer in his past life that his photos have a lyrical feel. A professional portrait and art photographer since 2010, the Paris- based creative has made a beautiful set called Deep Black where he’s staged a series of symbols against black backdrops. While some of these photos appear light and playful, still others have an emotional heaviness about them that can’t be denied. The thought behind this series was “Illuminating simple subjects, minimal compositions whilst preserving a strong expressiveness.”

CONSERVATION: PENGUIN STORY We loved this heartwarming story of the oldest man in Australia (109 years old at the time) who knit tiny sweaters for injured penguins. Alfred Date has actually been knitting since the mid 1930s. When the Penguin Foundation on Phillip Island asked for volunteers to make sweaters for rare little penguins in 2013, Alfred joined in. Penguins have struggled to survive in waters polluted by oil. These little penguin sweaters have helped keep them warm and safe! Alfred is also super active - having playing golf way into his ‘90s!

FEATURED ARTIST: CONOR O’BRIEN, VILLAGERS WEAREVILLAGERS.COM Dublin-based singer and songwriter Conor O’Brien of the Villagers is known for his distinctive voice, indie folk songs and eerie lyrics at times.
Our Editor, Jan Manon interviewed Conor O’Brien in August 2015.
Villagers initially formed in 2008 in Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, Ireland and today consists primarily of vocalist/guitarist Conor O’Brien. Conor also performs regularly with Danny Snow (bass, upright bass), Cormac Curran (keyboards), Gwion Llewelyn (drums, flugelhorn) and Mali Llywelyn (harp). Prior band members include Tommy McLaughlin, James Byrne, Richie Egan and David Crean. The band rose to prominence in 2010 with its debut album Becoming a Jackal. Awayland, its second album, won the Choice Music Prize. In 2016, Conor won an Ivor Novello Album award for his Darling Arithmetic album.

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND - WHERE YOU GREW UP, YOUR EARLY INTEREST AND EXPERIMENTS WITH MUSIC? Conor: I grew up in Dun Laoghaire, a little seaside town in south Dublin. I was always interested in music. I guess it started with a love for film scores and music from cartoons. Anything on the television really. I watched a lot of television when I was younger.
CONOR, YOU HAVE AN AMAZING VOCAL RANGE, HOLDING OUT THE NOTES AS YOU DO SO BEAUTIFULLY AND SO WELL! DID YOU SING A LOT GROWING UP? IS YOUR FAMILY MUSICAL? C: I sang all the time when I was growing up. I remember going through a phase of just constantly singing noises - making up words and sounds. I probably drove everyone crazy. My family all love music in different ways.
ANY EARLY INFLUENCES THAT INSPIRED YOU - MUSICIANS, FAMILY, OTHER? C: When I was about thirteen, my friend played me ‘The Gift’ by the Velvet Underground and I remember thinking that it sounded so much more raw and alive than anything on the radio at the time. It scared me but it gave me a glimpse into a whole other way of approaching noise-making. I’m still trying and failing at creating something as visceral and exciting as that.
WHAT INSTRUMENTS DO YOU PLAY? YOU ARE VERY TALENTED. :) ANY THAT YOU PREFER/CANNOT BE WITHOUT?

C: I’m the most proficient on the guitar, but I’ve always been obsessed with drumming. I can kind of play the piano a little bit too, but I’m quite restricted technically. I mainly use the piano to work things out on.
YOU FIRST PLAYED IN A BAND THE IMMEDIATE. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR FIRST ALBUM ‘“IN TOWER AND CLOUDS?” WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE FOR YOU? WHAT DID YOU TAKE AWAY FROM THERE? C: “In Towers & Clouds” was a collection of songs that myself and my friends had developed together in school and college years. We really used to work on our music constantly together. It was a incredible time in our lives. I learned far too much to mention!
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR FIRST EP “HOLLOW KINDS”? WHAT’S THE STUDIO WHERE YOU FIRST RECORDED? C: “Hollow Kind” was recorded with my friend Tommy McLaughlin in his attic studio in Donegal. We recorded it directly onto 2-inch tape. Tommy’s studio has

now significantly grown into the beautiful beast that is Attica Audio (http:// atticaaudio.com). My friend James Byrne released it on his label Any Other City. anyothercity.com. Any Other City has since grown to become one of the best indie labels in Ireland.
HOW WAS IT LIKE TO PLAY WITH NEIL YOUNG? C: I played one show with him in Dublin. But it was a very big show and it was a pretty amazing experience.
WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR MUSIC? IS IT OTHER MUSICIANS, RELATIONSHIPS, EXPERIENCES? IT IS A BIG QUESTION BUT WE’D LOVE TO KNOW. C: All of the above. Everything gets filtered by the songs in one way or another. I’ve always been attracted to sadness in music and art; I don’t know why.
AWAYLAND AND BECOMING A JACKAL STAND OUT AS ALBUMS. AN EARNEST SEARCHING. HOW DID THE SONG “MY LIGHTHOUSE” COME TOGETHER? CAN YOU SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT IT? THERE IS METAPHOR AND SUBTLETY IN THE LYRICS AND SOUND WITH A CERTAIN QUALITY OF DREAMINESS, WHICH CONTRASTS SO NICELY AGAINST THE DRUMS, BASS GUITAR AND KEYBOARDS. WHO OFFERS SUPPORTING VOCALS HERE TO CONOR’S? CAN YOU ALSO SHARE WHAT ALL THE INSTRUMENTS ARE ON THIS SONG? C: “My Lighthouse,” for me, is an effort to communicate with the dead. I’m aware that I may only be speaking to myself but I continue nonetheless, which leads me to place the deceased on some sort of pedestal. At the end of the song, I find a kind of resolve in the promise that I will “save all my stories” from this life for our seemingly inevitable meeting. I’m harmonizing with myself on this track. I think there’s only one acoustic guitar and some vocals on the album version.
WHERE DID YOU RECORD THESE ALBUMS? ANY AMBIENT SOUND OR INFLUENCES THAT YOU WERE DELIGHTED TO INCLUDE? C: The first album was recorded Tommy’s attic studio, the 2nd one was done in his real studio (Attica Audio).
YOU WENT IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION WITH THE ALBUM DARLING ARITHMETIC. IT’S BEAUTIFUL IN A BREATHTAKING WAY. IT’S ALSO SIMPLE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE SONG “COURAGE,” WHICH HAS A FEELING OF INTIMACY, IS ALMOST A CONFESSIONAL WITH SPARSE TEXTURES AND SINCERITY YET SO BOLD AT THE SAME TIME! WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS SONG? C: Courage is a song about finding strength within yourself; it’s about using the trials and tribulations as a means to become a better person.

WHAT ARE ALL THE INSTRUMENTS ON THIS TRACK? IN ADDITION TO YOUR FANTASTIC VOCALS AND GUITAR, THERE ALSO ARE SOME SUBTLE TONES. AN EXQUISITE SOUND. C: It’s full of mellotron sounds being fed through stereo reverbs & delays. I became very interested in creating a space, which I previously might have filled.
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU TO HAVE? C: I can never tell what direction the song is going in as I’m writing it. I feel completely controlled by the process of making it. It’s a sort of compulsive feeling.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK TO ELIMINATE OR EDIT OUT? C: With this album, the main thing I ended up editing out was any trace of bitterness or sarcasm in the music. There were a couple of ideas floating around for a few months, which I was desperately clinging to because I thought that the album was worthy of housing some satire. It took me a while to admit defeat and realize that I’m just not that witty. You learn a lot about yourself when you’re writing.

DARLING ARITHMETIC CAME OUT A FEW MONTHS BEFORE GAY MARRIAGE BECAME LEGAL IN IRELAND. YOU WERE ON TOUR PLAYING ALL OVER IRELAND AT THE TIME. ON THE NIGHT IT WAS ANNOUNCED, YOU WERE PLAYING AT CORK OPERA HOUSE. HOW WAS THIS EXPERIENCE FOR YOU? C: I was basically crying in the bus all the way to the show. I hadn’t properly slept for three nights and part of me thought that we were going to see a No vote. It was such a relief. There have always been reasons to be proud of my country but I honestly had never felt like I had access to that pride. For the first time in my life I actually felt wanted and loved by Ireland. There’s still so much to fight for though; this is only the beginning.

Mikko focuses primarily on capturing night scenes, simplistic landscapes and atmospheric photography. “My very first inspiration towards photography came to me when I was driving on a summer’s eve to my relative’s cabin. After a rainy day, the sun started shining, and the fog was rising in the fields. I just had to stop and watch this beautiful moment and then I realised that I wanted to start capturing these kind of moments. My photography journey first started in December 2008 and from the first moments; I fell in love with it. I like to create visually, and emotionally captivating pictures and my goal is to capture the feeling I had when I took the photograph.”

CONSERVATION: WWF Founded in Morges, Switzerland in 1961, the World Wide Fund for Nature is an international non-governmental organization that works for wilderness preservation, and the reduction of humanity’s footprint on the environment. With unprecedented levels of decline in animal species worldwide, the work that organizations like the World Wildlife Fund has become even more important than ever. From habitat conservation to protecting and saving wildlife species, the WWF has helped educate the public and also stop wildlife crime and poaching. Some species under decline include tigers, polar bears, orangutans, rhinos and marine turtles. Tiger populations declined for over a century, but finally are seeing a slow comeback. Today there are roughly 3,890 tigers remain-
ing in the wild - still a very low number. Through the concerted effort of the WWF and local authorities, tiger populations can escape extinction and rebound. Polar bears, like many other Arctic inhabitants, are struggling with climate change and loss of sea ice habitat. This loss is the greatest threat to their existence. The WWF is working with partners and local communities to establish a “Last Ice Area” in northernmost regions of Canada and Greenland where ice is expected to be preserved for the longest.

With a love for combining technology with artistry, New Zealand photographer and artist Joseph Michael brings a keen eye, craftsmanship skills and imaginative spirit to his works. Joseph has worked with revolutionary motion control techniques on Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit”, built 3D time-lapse rigs and created 360-degree cinema experiences. This series of long exposure photographs of glowworms were captured in a number of limestone caves on the North Island in New Zealand. Glowworms, Arachnocampa luminosa are native to the area. The 30 million year old formations form a majestic backdrop to the bioluminescence of glowworms.

Since 2016, Silvia and Roman have partnered up to create bronze art works at their studio in Milan using an ancient technique called lost wax casting. This method is still one of the best methods for creating a detailed, precise object at high speed and temperatures. After the initial sculptural form is created, Roman and Silvia spend many hours finishing details by hand - carving, chiseling, sanding and polishing.
Their works emphasize light through reflection and have a minimalist futuristic style that evokes power through pure, organic forms. Inspired by mysteries and origin stories related to genesis, space exploration and time travel, Silvia and Roman are excited to design new shapes for the future with great technical and handcrafted mastery. 85
