so right now This room is getting big buzz on Instagram. We’re zooming in on why.

@ckhellfish I’m obsessed with the paint job and those shelves

@lovelyindeed This is just BEYOND! I want that art in my house!

@sequinsand lipstick This is beautiful! Office goals for sure

@hopeirons STUNNINGGGG. When I hit the jackpot and buy a house I’m hiring you. Deal?!

@kjblattenbauer Those chairs are everything!

THE DESIGNER: Ashley Rose of @sugarandcloth (272k followers)

“I chose fun, bright elements for this home office to play up the personality of the homeowner,” says Ashley, who’s based in Houston, TX. “The walls went from dark wood paneling to fresh blue-green (Moon Glass by Behr); an oval dining table makes a cool desk paired with velvet chairs; and gold touches tie the room together. Something that surprises people: The ‘credenza’ is actually side-by-side cabinets from IKEA! I DIYed a toe kick to make them look custom.” HGTV Magazine 19

“I love the original 1919 wood floor in our playroom, but the center part had scratches—so I let the kids pick from three shades of green, and I painted it!” says HGTV designer Grace Mitchell. “I ran the stripe up the wall and across the ceiling for a total wow moment.” Stem Green by Benjamin Moore

I marked stripes with painter’s tape, primed, and then painted. I couldn’t resist spray-painting the handle gold to coordinate with the cabinets’ brass pulls.” All paints by Behr: Beloved Pink, Shy Smile, Ballet Coral Fountain, Lamplit, Corn Stalk, Frittata, Rose, Frosted Sage, Azalea Leaf, Willow Hedge, Misty Ocean Boulevard, and Watery Isle,

You can get super-crisp lines by pulling off the tape at a 45-degree angle—that’s the secret to getting this to look like a million bucks.” Verdigreen by Sherwin-Williams

the legs of a table “Gotta love a pop of color, though I didn’t want a kitchen table that was too bright,” says Charlotte Smith of the blog At Charlotte’s House. “Painting just the legs pink, to match the rug, was a nice compromise. They may be traditional, but they don’t look like it!” Beauty Queen by Behr

“While these stripes might have been a lot on a wall, they’re a fun surprise in the entry closet of our beach cottage,” says Ingrid Fetell Lee of the blog The Aesthetics of Joy. “I’m a fan of painting hidden spots, like inside a cabinet or a nightstand drawer. It keeps things fresh and exciting.” Bold Yellow by Benjamin Moore

HGTV Magazine 33

BRING ON THE BOLD! Because if there’s one thing that makes a home cheerful, it’s color. That was especially key for Rachel Simon, who redid her 1937 row house in Washington, D.C., after her divorce. “I’ve always been a colorphile, but I was craving fearless hues to reflect this chapter in my life,” she says. After doing a big reno to make her place feel more open, Rachel called on designer Kerra Michele to bring the zing. First the duo nailed down the color of a main fixed piece: the kitchen island (emerald). From there, they chose a bright blue sofa, then layered in other colors, repeating shades from room to room for continuity and sprinkling in quirky accents. “I love living in a happy place that doesn’t take itself too seriously,” says Rachel. “It’s become a reflection of me.”

For a showstopper of an island, designer Kerra suggested a green campaign-style one, a favorite Rachel look (notice the CB2 side table in the living room). For cabinets, Rachel had in mind a modern apothecary feel, achieved with custom mesh fronts. The counters, by Atlas Stone, are porcelain made to look like marble. “I didn’t trust myself to catch every last bit of tomato juice,” says Rachel. The sputniklike light fixture is by Lumens. FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 104.

Forever Lilac by Sherwin-Williams

Wow 57 by Kelly-Moore

“This mix of colors is both energizing and calming,” says Rachel. How that’s possible: The lilac wall, teal Room & Board sofa, and chartreuse radiator (each one in the house is a different color!) coexist with neutral pieces. The patterns in the custom Flor rug and West Elm drapes play into the excitement. Look closely—the brass tiebacks are hands (by Anthropologie). “It’s good to have details that go beyond what first meets the eye,” says Rachel.

“I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t reglaze a white tub!” says Rachel. “It’s not expensive, you can pick any color, and it makes a huge impact.” That blue matches the living room sofa. The matte finish of the penny tiles on the walls and floors looks cool next to the tub, and framing them with rectangular black tiles is a modern touch. Turquoise walls and a palm leaf shower curtain by Urban Outfitters give this spot tropical vacay cred.

Yellowcake by Farrow & Ball

This was once an office that didn’t get much use. “It was collecting junk, and it felt like an outward manifestation of my mental state,” says Rachel. So she and Kerra reimagined it as a chic spot for visitors. That adorable CB2 settee pulls out into a bed; its blush hue adds restful vibes to an otherwise energetic space. “The room’s color palette is a bit off the wall, but it works,” says Rachel. “When the colors are layered, they mute each other out.” 36 HGTV Magazine

rookie painter

practical painter

super painter

You have the basic know-how… sorta. You haven’t really dabbled in DIY—you prefer to hire a pro. A little practice could go a long way!

You know just what to do and can paint a room or porch as need be, but you’re ready to branch out more.

You’re highly skilled, you keep your brushes ultraclean, and you’re always willing to paint anything and everything. Paint runs in your veins!

Mina Starsiak Hawk, Good Bones

Read on for tips from HGTV pros, because even the most genius painter could still use a few refreshers.

1. How much time should you set aside to paint a room? “Whatever your skill level, plan for a room to take the better part of a day,” says Drew Scott of Property Brothers: Forever Home. “Figure two to three hours per coat, and the same amount of time between coats. A good-quality roller helps speed things up, so don’t cheap out—and avoid overloading the roller with paint or you’ll have to smooth globs.” Roll out excess paint on the raised Christina Anstead, Christina on the Coast part of the tray before hitting your wall.

2. What would you do with a dated dresser? First-timers, don’t be intimidated: Painting furniture is actually pretty simple. “Just prepare it properly so the paint sticks well to the surface and lasts over time,” says David Bromstad of My Lottery Dream Home. “Sand it, fill holes with putty, and prime it before painting. You can also change

58 HGTV Magazine

the pulls to give it the bling it deserves.” Advanced painters, consider stenciling the drawer fronts for an especially impressive update.

3. How should you choose a paint color?

“Even for someone like me who’s picked countless paint colors, it can be tricky,” says Christina Anstead of Christina on the Coast. “Paint a few coats of different shades on poster board and move the board around the room at different times of day and at night to see how they look in different light. Then go for it!” If you have paint chips in hand, keep in mind that flat and eggshell finishes more closely resemble their chips, while glossier finishes can appear darker.

4. How do you decide between white paints? Here’s a primer for the

uninitiated. Viewed individually, white paint chips may all look the same, but view them as a group and you’ll notice the different tones. “Some are creamy and add warmth, while some are bright and better for accenting things like trim,” says Mina Starsiak Hawk of Good Bones. “I use a lot of barely blue whites (Rhinestone by SherwinWilliams is a good one) because they go with just about anything.”

5. How to prep a room for painting? Some super painters consider it a point of pride to skip painter’s tape. “I’ll paint along ceilings, molding, and door frames without tape, using an angled brush,” says Alison Victoria of Windy City Rehab. “If you’re not experienced, use

plenty of tape to help in those spots. That’s what it’s for!” Rookies might also benefit from a painter’s tape applicator, which looks like the kind for packing tape.

dying to do something freehand or geometric. They’re all the rage right now because they bring a level of personality we haven’t seen on feature walls before,” says David.

6. What are you most

9. How do you

likely to paint? Whether you mainly paint your nails or you’re game to paint anything with a surface, experts agree: “Put the time into prep,” says Christina Anstead. That includes everything from gathering your materials before starting so you don’t, say, run out of primer in the middle of the job to cleaning walls with a sponge mop to remove dust, which prevents paint from properly sticking. “If I’ve never done something before—like the first time I used a paint sprayer—I watch a YouTube video or two to familiarize myself with the technique.”

store leftover paint? You can

Jonathan Scott, Property Brothers: Forever Home

keep it right in the can with the lid tightly on (tap it with a hammer or mallet) or in a glass jar if there’s less than a quart (best for visibility). “I put the name on the container, and where and when I used it,” says Mina Starsiak Hawk. “That makes it easy when it’s time to touch up scuffs—or when your kid draws a selfportrait on the wall in permanent marker.”

7. What do you wear to

paint? Anyone who paints often enough probably already has a splattered shirt and pair of pants that got demoted (or promoted!) to paint projects. For rookies, think: comfy and don’t care. “Choose something you won’t cry over if paint spills on it, like an old or insideout T-shirt!” says Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers: Forever Home. Also good: old sneakers that have some support (for all that standing) and a cap to keep paint from landing on your hair.

10. Who’s your paint support crew? Perfectionists, resist the urge to go it alone and enlist your partner to pitch in. “It definitely gets the paint job done faster when you divide and conquer,” says Alison Victoria. “One person tapes, another gets going with a brush—and pours the wine.”

response to dripped paint? The best response:

8. What’s your idea of an accent wall? If you’re new to the paint game, start with a solid color or a single stripe. Ready to get adventurous, practical painters? David Bromstad has ideas. “I’ve been

Act fast. “Most interior paint is latex and cleans up with a little water if you get to it before it has time to dry,” says Jonathan Scott. Goof Off removers also come in handy. If a blob does dry up, scrape it off with a plastic putty knife,

and avoid the problem next time by covering the floor with a drop cloth before you even crack open a can of paint. Latex paint should come off hands with soap and water; get out stubborn spots with rubbing alcohol. Tiffany Brooks, HGTV designer

12. What do you do if you like the color of a neighbor’s front door? Paint visualizer for the win! Even if you can’t find out the color of a local front door you’ve been ogling, you can upload a photo of your own door to a paint website and give matching shades a whirl. “I’ve never reached out to someone about a house color, but it’s a smart idea—why not make things easy?” says HGTV designer Tiffany Brooks. “Come to think of it, there’s a house in Chicago with a teal door that I love!”

13. What’s your idea of a paint job gone wrong? If the color you chose turns out not to be The One, realize that it may look better once your furniture and accessories are back in place. And remember, says Tiffany, “you could always paint over it after you live with it for a while and decide it’s not for you.” Drew Scott, Property Brothers: Forever Home

14. What goes through your head when you watch an HGTV makeover? “There’s only one correct answer here, and it’s ‘Wow, Jonathan is so good at design,’ ” says Jonathan. Says Drew, “I think you meant to say, ‘Drew is so good at design.’ ”

A

s Veronica Solomon toured the house in Katy, TX, that she’d eventually move into, she was thrilled by its blandness. There was beige for days—on the walls and floors—and plenty of rooms just waiting to be filled up. She looked forward to decorating it to the nines, all 2,500 square feet of it, and fully indulging her devotion to pretty stuff. “As someone who grew up in a family that never had the means for more than basic necessities, I felt very fortunate to be able to do this,” she says. Veronica ended up putting in wood-look porcelain-tile floors on the lower level and engineered wood upstairs, then piled on the goods. “Maximalism doesn’t have to mean clutter,” says Veronica, an interior designer who made every room look lovingly layered by repeating colors throughout the house, choosing patterns in big and small scales, and grouping collections together, such as her blueand-white ginger jar collection. Her other trick to keeping highly styled rooms from feeling chaotic: three storage units! “I just want to be surrounded by the things I love—I own up to that,” she says. “That said, my garage is a hot mess.”

62 HGTV Magazine

house tours LIVING ROOM “My idea of relaxing is sitting here and just admiring my things,” says Veronica. So they would all work together, she repeated the blues from the Anthropologie sofa in the ottoman, the garden stool, and the striped pillows. “And I brought in orange, since that’s opposite of blue on the color wheel,” she says. The botanical pattern of the sofa balances the leopard print on the Ballard Designs chair.

The eye needs a place to rest in this room; this white pendant by Regina Andrew does it.

The airy base of the faux-shagreen coffee table by Gabby opens up the space.

“I consider animal prints neutrals,” says Veronica.

DINING ROOM

KITCHEN Veronica wanted this room to feel unique, just like the rest of her home. That’s why she brought in gold leaf lotus pendants by Worlds Away and an antelope-motif shade (the fabric is by Schumacher). Those graphic backsplash tiles are by Clé.

“Matching chairs bore me,” says Veronica. “An eclectic mix has personality, and the settee lets me relax while I eat.” Bursts of cream—in the chairs by RH and the Surya rug—ground the space.

COURTNEY’S BEDROOM “My daughter’s style isn’t as fussy as mine— she likes things monochromatic and clean,” says Veronica. She obliged with mostly white elements, a mod acrylic chair (Courtney is into vintage), and just a few dashes of color on the custom daybed. Fluffy stuff always makes any room comfy-cool.

Fun texture plus a treat for feet: a sheepskin bench by Moss Home.

JOSHUA’S BEDROOM The teen was game to give his mom free reign, as long as he had a good desk (by West Elm) for drawing anime. “He also wanted a fridge, but that’s where I drew the line!” says Veronica. She went all out with pattern here. Since the striped bedding from Jungalow has thin lines and the ones in the chevron rug by Surya are large, they don’t compete.

With its ultrathin spokes, the sunburst mirror from HomeGoods has low-key charm.

Framed maps of London, a fave trip, lend a vintage vibe.

Custom drapes with a snakelike print are inspo for the drawings Joshua creates.

For major pizzazz, think b-i-g. This chandelier by Hudson Valley is 30 inches wide.

MASTER BEDROOM No bare spots allowed—yet the definitive color combo of black, white, and pops of red keeps things cohesive. Black grass cloth by Pacific Designs on the walls and custom drapes (with fabric by Fabricut) are a glam backdrop for the pattern party, while ceiling trim adds the finishing dressy touch.

In black and white, a rug (by Rizzy Home) makes a strong statement without distracting from the rest of the room.

house tours MASTER BATH “This is meant to be a sanctuary, but it wouldn’t be one for me without a pattern mix,” says Veronica. Amanda and Thomas with Faith, 4, and Joshua, 6

ack when Amanda and Thomas Wade were newlyweds house-hunting in Pasadena, CA, this 1,100-square-foot cottage was an easy sell because it was adorable and in a walkable neighborhood. Twelve years and two kids later, the two-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bathroom setup had become less adorable. The kitchen felt cramped, and the Wades wanted room for out-of-town family to stay over for visits. “A lot of homes in our neighborhood are small, so people either move on to something bigger or remodel,” says Amanda. She and Thomas took the reno route, growing the house to four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and 2,700 square feet. They tapped designer Amy Peltier to create a chill coastal feel, with plenty of blue and white and playful touches. Says Amanda, “It was the perfect house for us then—and with all of the changes, it’s perfect for us now and for many years to come.”

living room Although the living space didn’t get bigger, raising the ceiling from 8 feet to 10 feet made it feel like it did. Designer Amy hung drapes close to the crown molding to emphasize the height. The couple already owned the tan-color sofa, and light wood accents perked it up, including a bobbin chair by CR Laine and a mini coffee table by Dovetail with an open base that works well for the compact area.

dining area “We love how communal our round table is,” says Amanda. Crafting and lively discussions happen here, often prompted by a deck of conversation cards the kids have. Instead of matching chairs to the table’s rustic finish, Amy chose white Chippendale chairs for a fresh spin. They’re upholstered in a light blue fabric to match the kitchen backsplash. A chandelier by Arteriors Home made with wood beads and a wirewrapped frame is fun and fancy.

kitchen The mission: a larger, updated space with extra storage that didn’t look overloaded with cabinetry. The answer: a super-tall pantry, bright white paint (Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore), and a scallop tile backsplash (from Tap ‘N’ Tile, a local store owned by a neighbor) to catch the eye. Counter stools by Stanley Furniture pick up the fun color. Amanda’s favorite part? “Opening the doors to the backyard makes washing dishes pleasant!” she says.

master bathroom Take it from Amanda and Thomas, few things thrill parents as much as transitioning from stepping over bath toys and competing for the sink to having your own spacious and serene retreat. Sleek sconces by Hudson Valley Lighting and glossy mosaic tile with a sea green tinge by Lunada Bay Tile give it spa vibes. “Renovations are hard,” says Amanda, “but then there are the days when you get to pick tile.”

master bedroom The first thing you do when you get a much bigger bedroom? Get a bed with a much bigger headboard! This king-size velvet one with a 6foot-tall headboard by CR Laine is forever-worthy. The grass cloth wallpaper by Thibaut and the shag rug from Rugs USA bring in yet more luxe texture, while the wide nightstands by Noir sub in for a linen closet; extra sheets are stored there.

guest bedroom “With young kids, many of the sweetest moments happen early in the morning when they’re mellow and snuggly, so I wanted family to stay over at our place and not in a hotel,” says Amanda. She and designer Amy made it as special as a fourstar room with pretty wallpaper by Clarke & Clarke, bright blue lamps by Circa Lighting, and a tasseled duvet cover by Serena & Lily.

80 HGTV Magazine

kids’ bathroom Faith and her brother got a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, with double vanities and a full bath with a tub— great for bubble baths. “We decided on subway tile throughout, but Amy had the idea to put in thin stripes of blue tile,” says Amanda. “It’s one small tweak that made a huge impact—guests have always asked about it!” Faith likes to perch on her step stool (by Serena & Lily) to check out hair bows in the mirror. The little blue light is by Feiss.

joshua’s bedroom The 6-year-old got a kick out of filling up his new built-in shelves with all of his favorite books and some treasures to admire (his toys live in the playroom, which cuts down on clutter here). The bulletin board is where he displays his artwork and family photos. Best homework partner: a tiger rug from Amara.

Even though our house is bigger, it still feels like a cozy place that brings us together. Of course, we also enjoy having more space to spread out!” —Amanda

PANELED HOOD The couple had a stainless hood in their previous home that dominated the room. “Our custom wood one feels stylish, like a piece of furniture,” says Christie. It’s set against a sea of sparkling blue-green subway tiles—very Florida.

Homeowners Christie and Jimmy

C

hristie and Jimmy Walker of St. Augustine, FL, used to have a dark side—their old kitchen, with its deep brown cabinets and black granite countertops. “Jimmy’s a big cook and we like spending time in the kitchen, so while we were building our new home, we went for the total opposite look,” says Christie. As plans were underway for their light-filled, muchexpanded floor plan, they tag teamed ideas for coastal farmhouse flair, with Christie pinning photos and Jimmy conducting a Facebook poll to choose the cabinetry color (off-white won by a landslide). Designer Lauren Leonard helped fulfill their fantasies. Finally, Jimmy had a happy place to make his famous chicken potpies. “We both got everything we wanted,” says Christie.

POPPY ISLAND Christie and designer Lauren considered mint green, then decided more contrast would be cooler and in strutted peacock blue (Manitou Blue by SherwinWilliams). The quartzite top has blue veining that plays off it. Simple yet chic: cone-shaped glass pendants from Ethan Allen.

in the kitchen

SHIPLAP STYLE It’s Christie’s Fixer Upper dream come true. “The look is as homey as I’d hoped for, and it makes the dining area distinct,” she says. The boards are painted White Duck by Sherwin-Williams.

RUSTIC STOOLS The inspiration for these RH cuties? Vintage tractor seats. The scooped-out oak tops are comfy, too.

HGTV Magazine 97

OPEN CHANDELIER Christie had her heart set on one that’s rectangular, like the table. This stunner from Shades of Light is made without glass for maximum airiness.

STATEMENT TABLE & CHAIRS A large farmhouse table was a must (this one is by GJ Styles). For a breezy pairing, Lauren chose rattan chairs by Gabby with crisscross backs and custom cushions with chartreuse welting.

PRETTY RUG The light blue breaks up all the wood in the room (it’s by Ballard Designs). A pair of patterned lamps from Layla Grayce and barn art from One Kings Lane also bring in more color.
