HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

CLEANSE YOUR BODY — ALL YEAR LONG! Are you in need of revitalization? Do you feel more tired, have more headaches, or are you noticing a growing belly? Then you should \hglb]^k ikhfhmbg` rhnk ebo^k l a^Zema Zl bm fb`am be affected. With Active LiverTM you have the tools to help do this on a daily basis.

LIVER HEALTH IS VITAL Each day, our liver works hard to filter and remove toxins from our body. However, when we overindulge and with the increased exposure to environmental pollutants, we risk burdening and injuring the liver. While liver damage may be less apparent in the beginning, symptoms like abdominal swelling, fatigue, headaches and nausea can later show up.

GETTING BACK ON TRACK To get back on track we need to promote our liver’s health. Maintaining a healthy weight and consuming less alcohol can help. Fasting may encourage the liver’s cleansing function but can be difficult to maintain and is not a sustainable solution long term. Luckily, nature contains ingredients that can help the liver too.

TEST-YOURSELF:

Active Liver™ is a Swedish herbal supplement that contains important liver-loving ingredients like turmeric, globe artichoke, and milk thistle. These herbs have long been used in herbal medicine to help support liver health.

MiLK THiSTLE EXTRACT — Milk thistle has its origin

in the Mediterranean area. For centuries, it has been known to promote a healthy liver. TURMERiC — Turmeric has a long history of use in Traditional Medicine and Ayurveda in South Asia. Its therapeutic effects are also helpful in stimulating liver health.

YES NO

I suffer from headaches or brain fog I have a hard time losing weight I have indigestion & bloating I’m tired all the time My skin itches and I see brown spots My tongue is coated Does this sound like you? Then try Active Liver as a help to promote your liver health.

@newnordicnorthamerica

Results may vary. Always read and follow instructions prior to use.

GLOBE ARTiCHOKE EXTRACT — is a plant that contains flavonoids and phenolic acids, which have been discovered a century ago and can have beneficial effects on liver health. Simply take just one tablet a day of Active Liver to reap the benefits of these ingredients!

FASHION & BEAUTY nail care

PRO

TIP “Take the time to use hardening and repairing products between manicures,” suggests Evelyne Robitaille, commercial director at Vitry Canada. “It helps to maintain healthy nails all year long.”

FILES Pamper, protect and beautify your nails. TEXT JESSICA DOSTIE

THE BASICS START WITH MOISTURE Keeping your hands and fingernails moisturized is key to keeping them healthy. Introducing a cuticle oil to your routine never goes amiss. Apply it religiously every night before going to bed to maximize its benefits. In order to integrate the product into your daily regimen, keep it on your bedside table.

CHOOSE YOUR TOOLS You don’t need a ton of accessories to take care of your nails. More often than not, a file and a cuticle stick are enough. File delicately from the outside to the centre without creating a back-and-forth movement that will weaken the nail. Every week, try to gently push the cuticles back, ideally after a bath or shower.

summer style

SHAPE

This summer, we’ll be seeing a lot of almond-shaped nails, but square tips are also making a comeback. There will always be trends when it comes to the shape of fingernails, but they do come and go. The best bet for a flattering shape is one that matches your hands. For example, an oval shape is ideal for short and wide nail beds, and a square shape is better suited if the base of your nail is long and narrow.

SEASONAL COLOURS

APPLICATION TECHNIQUE

If you’re into nail DIY, it’s all in the brushstroke: You have to apply the right amount of pressure to open the brush into a fan without allowing the bristles to touch the cuticle. Once positioned three-quarters of the way down, push gently toward the cuticle and then, before touching it, slide upward. This technique prevents the buildup of polish at the base of the nail. Thin layers of polish, as well as the essential protective base and finishing coats, are key, along with making sure the polish dries completely. To speed up the process, a few specially formulated drying drops can be applied after the polish. To limit the mess, paint your dominant hand first.

Keeping with the neutral trend, the shades of a more modern burnt caramel are particularly popular this season. Want to go wild? The return of pale yellow, a star of the last spring-summer fashion shows, as well as blue— Pantone colour of the year— are predicted to hit hands in all their variations. Timeless bright red is also among the spring favourites.

OPI Nail Lacquer in Mi Casa Es Blue Casa, $13, opi.com.

PRO TIP A little dexterity is needed for perfectly executed designs, but above all, proper tools like brushes in different sizes really help. “It’s also a lot easier when you have an image to guide you,” advises Naomi Arvelo Pelchat of The Ten Spot. If you opt for a salon-applied design, expect to pay $50 to $80, depending on its complexity.

OFTEN GROUND ZERO FOR THE MAJOR TRENDS OF THE SEASON, FASHION SHOWS ARE AN INEXHAUSTIBLE SOURCE OF INSPIRATION. THE PROOF IS THESE TWO STYLES, WHICH ARE SURE TO POP UP ON NAILS ALL SUMMER!

UNSTOPPABLE CLASSIC Thought the French manicure was over? No way! It’s back, and in colour. Seen at the Zimmermann and Nicole Miller shows, the style is modernized by painting the tip of the nail red, blue, yellow, orange.…It’s a rainbow of options!

PHOTOGRAPHY, ISTOCKPHOTO

The longest day of the year is almost here and we’re sure you’re more than ready to get outside. But ultraviolet radiation from the sun can damage the skin, causing cancer and premature aging, so make sure you’re practicing sun safety. If the UV Index Forecast is 3 or higher—even when skies are cloudy—you need protection. Apply a broad spectrum sunblock with an SPF 30 or higher 15 to 30 minutes before heading outdoors and reapply every two hours. Limit sun exposure between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., take shelter in the shade and always bring an umbrella to the beach. BEAUTY

NOTES TRY THESE PRODUCTS STARRING SOME OF RHUBARB’S ESSENTIAL VITAMINS AND MINERALS FOR A RADIANT COMPLEXION.

THE BENEFITS • Potent Pigments: Handsomely hued from light to dark green and pale pink to deep red, rhubarb is packed full of polyphenols, and particularly a class of pigments called anthocyanins that contain micronutrients with unique antioxidant properties. Research on polyphenols show they may play an important role in preventing a number of diseases, from cancer to cardiovascular disease to obesity. • Parietin, an orange pigment naturally occuring in rhubarb (and lichens), has demonstrated real promise as a source for anticancer pharmaceuticals, even in cases where treatment has shown resistance. A preliminary study from the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University discovered that parietin may be capable of killing leukemia cells while leaving healthy blood cells unharmed, and can potentially slow the growth of other human cancer cells. • June is prime time for rhubarb! Recent research suggests rhubarb harvested in the spring possesses increased antioxidant potential when compared with the fall harvest. 44 | CANADIAN LIVING JUNE 2020

• Baked Goodness: Baking rhubarb can significantly increase its levels of polyphenols! Plus, adding rhubarb juice to strawberry jam or apple purÊe not only boosts their antioxidant power, but also reduces unfavourable colour changes. • Healing Powers: This crimson crop also boasts impressive anti-inflammatory properties. Preliminary tests discovered that rhubarb extract may be effective in healing incision sites post-surgery by helping to reduce inflammation and stimulate the development of new blood vessels. This is good news since risk of post-op infection remains a top concern for patients. • Just like last month's superfood, basil, this stellar stalk is a superb source of vitamin K, and is loaded with vitamin C, magnesium and potassium to boot. It's also chock-full of dietary fibre, so it’ll keep you regular. Likewise, the root is used in traditional medicines and herbal supplements for its laxative and diuretic effects.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

I’m a carboholic but...

I finally reached my desired weight! Josephine had a hard time losing weight and suspected it had to do with her love for carbs. One day she came across ZuccarinTM, a carb blocker, which changed things for her for good.

M

y name is Josephine and I live in Toronto. I work as a nutritional planner for hospital patients. All my life I’ve struggled with my weight but in the last year I finally figured it out. I’m down to my desired weight and feeling better than ever. My friends and aqua-fitness instructor keep asking me how I lost the weight, in addition to my diet and fitness classes*.

I CAME ACROSS ZUCCARIN A few years back I was always tired, craving sugar and I was overweight, so I suspected that it was because of too many carbs and fluctuating blood sugar levels. I went looking for a natural health product, that could help reduce the absorption of carbs and came

across a popular mulberry leaf extract product from Sweden, called Zuccarin Diet.

SUCCESS - FINALLY When I started taking Zuccarin Diet*, I noticed how much better I felt. As a nice side effect, I was finally seeing effective results in my weight loss program. I was thrilled!! It has been over a year now, and I have reached my desired weight goals. When anyone asks me how I did it, I’m the first to tell them about Zuccarin Diet*. I strongly recommend it.”

Proven Weight Loss Support Zuccarin DietTM, a Swedish supplement made from naturally sourced mulberry leaf extract, is proven to help weight loss by slowing the absorption of carbs you eat. An Italian study of Zuccarin™ showed an average weight loss of 20 pounds in just 90 days, in the Zuccarin group. They lost 10% of their total body weight and 3 times more weight than the control group, not taking Zuccarin, but on the same calorie-controlled diet.1

* Could be a compliment to a healthy lifestyle that incorporates a calorie reduced diet, and regular physical activity for individuals involved in a weight management program.

Results may vary. Always read and follow instructions prior to use.

SKIN DEEP 50 | CANADIAN LIVING JUNE 2020

With sweltering days on the horizon, it’s important to take care of your skin and protect it from different fungal infections that can crop up as temperatures rise. More unsettling (and some would say embarrassing to talk about) than dangerous, these conditions are more common than you might think. TEXT JULIE LEDUC

HEALTH & FITNESS

MYCOSIS IS AN INFECTION OR DISEASE CAUSED BY MICROSCOPIC FUNGI ON THE BODY. IT IS MORE COMMON IN THE SUMMER MONTHS BECAUSE FUNGI FAVOUR MOISTURE, HEAT AND PERSPIRATION. “SOME FUNGI THAT CAUSE MYCOSIS ARE NATURALLY PRESENT ON OUR SKIN WITHOUT EVER BEING A PROBLEM,” SAYS QUEBEC CITY-BASED DERMATOLOGIST MARCANDRÉ DORÉ. “SUMMER CONDITIONS ALLOW THEM TO MULTIPLY, AND IT’S THIS PROLIFERATION THAT MAKES INFECTIONS MORE COMMON.”

TINEA PEDIS “This infection, commonly called athlete’s foot, is caused by a group of fungi that spread in damp environments,” says Quebec City-based dermatologist Linda Rochette. Athlete’s foot is contagious— not present on our bodies until it is contracted by walking barefoot on contaminated surfaces, like the pool deck, locker room floors or public shower tiles. “The infection first causes dry spots between the toes,” says Dr. Doré, “typically between the fourth and fifth toes. These spots get itchy and crack, followed by infection.” Beware: The infection can spread by touching affected areas. TREATMENT An over-the-counter or prescription antifungal cream can be applied between the toes and underfoot, morning and evening, for two weeks. For preventive measures, do both feet, even if only one of them is infected. Oral treatment may be necessary if the infection worsens or does not react positively to the cream. If athlete’s foot goes untreated, it can lead to a nail infection. In this case, it’s absolutely necessary to consult a healthcare professional. This form of mycosis needs to be treated with prescription medication. PREVENTION “Dry your feet really well, especially between the toes, when coming out of the shower or after bathing,” advises Dr. Rochette. “Try to prevent your feet from sweating by using an over-the-counter foot powder.” In addition, avoid wearing closed shoes, which trap humidity and don’t allow the feet to breathe, and always wear sandals when walking around the pool or in public showers.

INTERTRIGO Also known as skin fold fungus, this fungal infection causes irritation and inflammation within the folds of the skin, especially under the breasts and skin rolls. “It presents as a reddish rash with small itchy bumps,” says Dr. Doré. TREATMENT Apply an antifungal cream to the affected areas (prescribed or over-thecounter) twice a day, for two weeks. PREVENTION Try to stay cool and dry, wear breathable clothing made from natural fibres like cotton or linen. After showering or swimming, dry off really well, especially anywhere there are folds of skin—using a hair dryer can be helpful to ensure that your skin is totally dry. You can also apply cornstarch or baby powder on any affected areas to help absorb sweat.

PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR The common yeast infection of the skin manifests as white, flaky spots (that don’t tan), or as pink to brown dry, round spots. “These blemishes cluster mainly on the torso, back, chest, neck and shoulders,” says Dr. Rochette. Yeast is already present on our bodies, Dr. Doré explains, “But, in some cases, it’s more likely to multiply in hot and humid conditions, causing skin irritation and infection.” TREATMENT Use an over-the-counter antifungal cream on the affected areas, twice a day, for two weeks. “If the infection is extensive or resistant, oral treatments are available,” says Dr. Doré. “Once treated, the white spots will not disappear immediately,” adds Dr. Rochette. They will only regain their pigment after exposure to the sun. But don’t forget your SPF! PREVENTION If you’ve experienced pityriasis versicolor in the past, it’s a good idea during the summer to lather your skin with an antidandruff shampoo that contains selenium sulphide for 10 minutes, once a week. This will stop the reproduction of fungi and help prevent the appearance of spots. CANADIAN LIVING JUNE 2020 | 51

Each planter must have one or more drainage holes (if not, simply drill them). Then place a piece of newspaper or a coffee filter at the bottom of the pot to cover the hole, allowing excess water to drain out while keeping the soil in place. No drainage layer is necessary— just fill the container with potting soil up to 10 centimetres from the top. Mix in a handful of all-purpose, slow-release granular fertilizer. Remove the plants from their original pots and set them in the planter, spacing them evenly. The tallest plant should be placed in the centre with the others all around. Fill the space between the root balls with potting soil.

N o 12

Water abundantly. This will compact the soil a little, so if it settles too much and the top of the root ball is exposed, just add a little more potting soil.

For more blooms, start applying a soluble fertilizer (liquid seaweed, for example) to your watering can once a week starting at the beginning of July. These arrangements won’t need a lot of fussy maintenance. Indeed, most are self-cleaning, so you won’t even need to deadhead (remove faded flowers). But if you see any damaged or yellowing leaves, don’t hesitate to remove them.

PHOTOGRAPHY, PROVEN WINNERS (FANTASTIC FOLIAGE, ALL-SEASON CONTAINER)

MAINTENANCE Throughout the summer, check the humidity of each planter’s soil twice a week or so by pressing your finger into it. If it’s dry to the touch, water thoroughly. Otherwise, wait.

One of the simple delights of the summer season: local strawberries. Traditionally available in June, this fruit has several sweet varieties that are available throughout the warm months at roadside fruit stands, farmers’ markets and grocery stores. Nutrient-rich and loaded with antioxidants, strawberries are one of nature’s healthiest treats, so take the time to enjoy them piled high on shortcakes, baked into muffins and tarts, preserved or simply eaten out of hand.
