ooking to do a complete renovation? Strap yourselves in because this issue is all about design. Let’s start by Ƭguring out your style. Do you favour all that is contemporary or do you err on the side of traditional? Our feature showcases the very latest design styles — some newbies and some that have stood the test of time. Now that you’ve got your style sorted, we can move on to interior decoration. We show you how you can bring your interiors to life with paint colours, wallpaper, Ʈooring and lighting. Sometimes you really can judge a book by its cover and our feature takes a look at what’s new in exterior choices, from wall, window and door designs to rooƬng, bricks, render and cladding.

There are plenty of projects to get you inspired this edition. One home that stands out to me is Plaster Fun House by SansArc Studio. Located in Torrensville, South Australia, this Art Deco-inspired home for a young couple is fun, curvy, colourful and full of light. It’s described by the architects as a little extension with big personality. I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I did. Just because you can’t travel overseas at the moment doesn’t mean you can’t gather inspiration from abroad. This issue we take a look at three stunning dwellings from Denmark, South Africa and the US. FOLLOW US April Ossington Editor

NEW WAVE COLLECTION BY GREG NATALE

Riding the wave of nostalgia, Greg Natale’s vibrant New Wave collection of vases embraces the colour and Ʈamboyance of the 1980s. Glossy and geometric, the vases look beautiful grouped together but have equal impact when styled solo. Reminiscent of the past but reimagined in a contemporary way, New Wave is available in a range of colours including classic black and white, vibrant blues and stunning maroon as well as soft pastels. Fill with sculptural Ʈorals or greenery and watch your home burst to life. gregnatale.com

PISO HUERTOS, MAIORCA Boasting an interior design created by Catellani & Smith, Piso Huertos in Maiorca is a private home in the Balearic Islands. The romantic and contemporary apartment is distinguished by a colour palette of relaxing tones and a sage green kitchen. Decorative cornices, rich wood furnishings, recessed bookshelves and parquet Ʈooring are just a few of the memorable features. The PostKrisi 49 chandelier — a 100cm Ƭbreglass hemisphere — is the hero of the home, unifying the kitchen and living areas and creating a sky-high statement. The pendant features a gold-coloured leaf covering the inside of the diƪuser, bathing the space in rich, warm light. Project by Ç Mallorca Collection. catellanismith.com/en

WIGGLE CHAIR BY FRANK GEHRY

An oldie but a goodie, Wiggle side chair is part of architect Frank Gehry’s 1972 “Easy Edges” furniture series. Playing with form and function, the collection introduced a new aesthetic dimension to everyday materials. The sculptural Wiggle chair is both comfortable and robust and is an instant showstopper in any room. The chair’s deceptively simple appearance belies the countless hours and architectural expertise that went into its construction. livingedge.com.au

FIVE OF THE BEST… LAMPS

Amp up your lamp game with this collection of illuminating Ǽoor and table options Edited by Louise Smithers

1

1/ LUNE TABLE LAMP Made to order in Denmark from waxed oiled oak, The Lune lamp fuses traditional woodturning and natural materials with modern technology. The perfectly rounded solid oak shade is beautifully contrasted by the contemporary LED light source. The name “Lune” references the Scandinavian word “lunt”, which roughly translates to “warm, cosy and glowing”. Endeavouring to make products that bring comfort and ease to consumers, Brdr. Kruger has produced a lamp that is fresh, bold and contemporary, and one that is rooted in the family company’s passion for wood and craftsmanship. Lune was designed by trained Norwegian craftsman and designer Sverre Uhnger, who is known for creating tactile furniture and products that look and feel natural. brdr-kruger.com

2/ ARANCINI FLOOR LAMP The minimal geometric form of the Arancini lamp by Moda Piera is perfectly balanced and almost sculptural in appearance. When illuminated, this dimmable lamp gives oƪ a warm ambient light, highlighting its clean lines and the classic material combination of brass and travertine. It is also available with a black marble base. RRP $1995. Photography by Ying Ang. modapiera.com

3/ BOTTI FLOOR LAMP Botti is a jazzy little number that hits all the right notes. Inspired by jazz musician Chris Botti, the Ʈoor lamp is handmade in brass and bathed in a gold-plated Ƭnish that mimics the look of a real trumpet. With its unique shape and aluminium base, the Art Deco-style Ʈoor lamp is also available in marble, aƪording it an even more luxe aesthetic. Eight spotlights provide soft lighting and a warm ambience, leaving a romantic glow wherever it goes. Reaching 170cm at its highest point, Botti is like having your own personal brass band without all the noise. €2820 (approximately AU$4378). delightfull.eu/en

4/ RE & REGINA GLASS LAMPS Glass sculptures during the day and glowing art installations by night, Re and Regina are the perfect pair. The curvaceous collection, designed by Bobo Piccoli, was on display in Milan 2020. First launched by FontanaArte in 1968, the illuminating lamps merge art with industrial production. Inspired by the sinuous shape of chess pieces, the Re (King) and Regina (Queen) pieces produce positive, assertive and creative aesthetics wherever they are placed. Calibrating the formal tension of a utilitarian object on a quest for unity among the arts, Bobo Piccoli’s glass lamps are a welcome addition to any discerning home. POA. fontanaarte.com/en/re-and-regina

5/ CLEO DESK LAMP The Cleo desk lamp by Kelly Wearstler is dramatic and architectural. The lamp features Kelly’s signature use of mixed metals and geometric forms. As eye-catching as the Egyptian queen, Cleo comes in bronze and antique burnished brass with an antiquestyle white shade. Known to marry historical references with contemporary inƮuences, Kelly’s eclectic Cleo collection also includes a Ʈoor lamp, sconce, pendant and table lamp, all of which are distinctive and edgy. From brutalism to minimalist or contemporary, Cleo can lend itself to a variety of interior design schemes. POA. montauklightingco.com

PRESENCE IN HORMUZ 02, IRAN Completed in 2020, Presence in Hormuz 02 by ZAV Architects is an urban development on Iran’s historic port on Hormuz Island that encourages community empowerment. “In a country where the state struggles with political disputes outside its borders, every architectural project becomes a proposal for internal governing alternatives, asking basic questions: what are the limits of architecture and how can it suggest a political alternative for communal life? How can it attain social agency?” a spokesperson from ZAV Architects explains. The project comprises an abundance of small-scale dome structures (made using the superadobe rammed earth and sand technique of Nader Khalili) that are as bright on the inside as they are on the outside. SUB-ZERO AND WOLF FLAGSHIP SHOWROOM, SYDNEY A new kitchen showroom has opened in Sydney and we’re keen as mustard to check it out. Sub-Zero and Wolf have put down roots on Foveaux St in Surry Hills, creating an aspirational space that is immersive and informative. “The location and the building itself were critical to the design of the showroom,” says Andrew Mumford, managing director of Sub-Zero and Wolf, Australia.

“Heritage elements were so important to perfectly complement the heritage of the Sub-Zero and Wolf story. Designer Adele Bates interpreted the brief very eƪectively, creating an inspirational space for consumers and the design community that diƪerentiates and highlights the diverse Sub-Zero and Wolf design styles.” Located at 63 Foveaux St, Surry Hills, the showroom is open by appointment Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm. au.subzero-wolf.com/en

Design Ƭrm Bergman & Co, in collaboration with Raft Studio and Stuart Neil, were responsible for furnishing the dining space, which is littered with bespoke Ƭttings and Ƭnishes sourced from local artisans and antique dealers. NEALE WHITAKER ® FOR LUXAFLEX Covering up with Neale Whitaker Words Louise Smithers

I

n recent years, the role of window coverings has evolved to place greater emphasis on indoor/outdoor living. According to Neale Whitaker, consumers have a better understanding of the transformative eƪect of light and the beneƬts of energy eƯciency, temperature regulation and privacy control. Once an afterthought, window coverings are now front and centre of most consumers’ minds. “Light has the ability to transform a room and change its mood, and that is particularly relevant to us here in Australia, where natural light is abundant but often harsh,” says Neale. “To my mind, window coverings are one of the key choices in any interior design scheme, from both an aesthetic and functional perspective.” Like a friend in your living room, Neale has become a bonaƬde “household name” across our wide brown land. As a judge on Nine’s The Block and co-host of Foxtel’s Love It or List It Australia, Neale has recently added LuxaƮex national brand ambassador to his impressive resume. Citing the integrity of the brand as

34

home design

one reason for his aƯliation with LuxaƮex®, Neale has long been a fan of the company’s stylish and functional window coverings. “Working as I do today in the interior design world, I trust LuxaƮex for the quality and innovation of its window coverings,” he says. “The LuxaƮex range is fashion-forward — especially in its use of technology — but it retains a timeless sense of style that makes it the ideal choice for a broad range of interiors and aesthetics. I guess all of those qualities combined make LuxaƮex a perfect Ƭt for me.” Unlike many brand ambassadors who’d like you to do as they say and not as they do, and who rarely use the products they spruik, Neale put his money where his mouth is when decorating and furnishing his own home. “Our home blends classic and contemporary — and we have never shied away from strong design statements — so that guided us in our window covering choices,” he says. “We also needed to maximise the beautiful views from our property and the abundant natural light.” In the kitchen, laundry and home oƯce,

where all the windows run along the same side of the house, Neale has dressed the glazing with white LuxaƮex PolySatin® Shutters, which allowed him to combine classic style with modernity and functionality. “These plantation-style shutters have always been a design go-to for me as they’re timeless and complement almost any interior style,” he adds. “PolySatin Shutters have a tactile matt lustre and are made from a durable polyresin compound that makes them ideal for wet areas like kitchens, laundries and bathrooms.” In the guest bedroom, Neale opted for LuxaƮex Pirouette® Shadings. Blending the look of sheer curtains and the functionality of blinds, Pirouette Shadings enjoy a silhouette reminiscent of shutters, providing continuity of style both internally and externally. “What we love about our Pirouette Shadings is their versatility,” Neale enthuses. “Fully opened, they allow us to enjoy the magniƬcent country views, but they can be adjusted for a softfocus view or closed for privacy at the touch of a button on the PowerView Pebble remote.”

NEALE WHITAKER’S TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT WINDOW COVERINGS Neale advises opting for custom-made blinds or awnings so you can beneƬt from expert advice and support, which is vital in the planning stage of a new build or reno. The trained LuxaƮex professionals will consider factors that are often overlooked, such as

window positioning, structural and electrical requirements and energy eƯciency. They’ll also guarantee you end up with the best window covering solution that Ƭts your space perfectly. “The LuxaƮex range is fashionforward in its use of technology, design and materials, but from an aesthetic perspective, the range in my opinion feels timeless,” reveals Neale. “That’s one of the things

I like most about the LuxaƮex brand and what makes it the perfect choice for a wide range of aesthetics. Trends will always come and go, but the right window coverings can be a perfect backdrop for almost any look. For guaranteed future-prooƬng, I would always opt for clean, simple lines in neutral shades. To my mind that’s a great investment in style.” HD luxaƮex.com.au

DOM GAUCI

Creating vibrant geometric representations of people, animals and products, Dom Gauci is the self-confessed “crazy dog lady” shaking up the art scene and painting the town red (and green and blue and pink…) Words Louise Smithers

“M

uch like a bumper sticker on the back of a car, art in the home can tell you a lot about a person,” says Dom Gauci, artist and founder of DG Designs. “It’s a reƮection of you to some extent and as you evolve, so does your taste in art and design.” DG Designs was a happy accident born in New York. While living and studying in the city, Dom challenged herself to create one complete illustration every day for a year. What began as a way to re-focus her energy into more creative outlets quickly became a viable business, with requests Ʈooding in and Dom’s stash of pencils shrinking by the day. So where did it all begin? We sat down with Dom to pick her brain and perve on her art. Harbouring ambitions to work as a graphic designer at Vogue, a young and eager Dom

36

studied a Bachelor of Communication Design. “I couldn’t ignore this nagging pressure in my mind to become a creative writer (my other passion at the time),” Dom shares. “When I began studying creative writing at Columbia University in 2015, I knew almost instantly I was going to head down the design path. Every essay I handed in had an artistic twist. I actually handed in my Ƭnal assignment of essays as a magazine.” It was also during 2015 that DG Designs was born in Dom’s New York City apartment. “I set myself a challenge of completing a drawing a day while living overseas,” she explains. “What started as small gifts for friends and family began to grow organically through word of mouth and the support of people within my younger network.” Six years on, DG Designs is growing rapidly, with big-name clients commissioning her work. With an extensive retail collection and collaborations with the likes of the AFL,

Mattel (Barbie), The Block, Aje and Kia, the business’s future looks bright. Evolving from hand drawings using Ƭne liner and paper, Dom now draws everything by hand directly onto a computer before colouring it in manually. When asked to describe her style, she resists the urge to pigeonhole herself into any one category. “I actually perceive myself as a hybrid mix of an entrepreneur and artist,” she says. “I get to live the best of both worlds — to be creative and Ƭnd a way to monetise it.” Dom was initially inspired by fashion icons, so it wasn’t until she received an overwhelming amount of requests for representations of sports stars, rappers and R&B artists that her output began to pivot. As she says: “It’s about the customer, not yourself!” Who doesn’t love a Bubble O’ Bill? With smooth ice cream, a thin layer of chocolate on the back of his head and a bubble gum nose, Bubble O’ Bill is a national

treasure. Dom agrees. The piece “Mr Bill Tribute” is DG Designs’ best-seller and Dom’s personal favourite. “The ‘90s nostalgia is real here at DG and this is the perfect piece to make you reminisce, but also to make you slightly hungry,” she jokes. As well as confectionery classics and modern-day musical icons, Kanye West is another fan favourite. Dom points to West’s eƪortless style (his “steeze”) as one reason for his appeal.

It might be surprising to learn that despite her vibrant work, Dom actually prefers to surround herself with softer, more muted palettes. “My go-to hues for furniture are white, grey, black and navy,” she reveals. With a Ƭerce and passionate woman at the helm, it looks like there’s no stopping DG Designs. “I believe I am a trailblazer in this Ƭeld, and I plan to scale the business

as far as I can and collaborate with more household names to build the brand,” she enthuses. “This is a new era and generation for art, and the idea of selling 5000 aƪordable pieces compared to one costly piece is what drives me. My goals change annually to reƮect the year ahead, but overall, I’d like to leave a legacy and reach as many customers as I can.” HD domgaucidesigns.com.au

njecting style into your interiors can be as simple as a lick of paint, some beautiful handmade decor or a designer light Ƭtting to illuminate a space. New shades, sculptural elements, textures and shapes can combine to leave a lasting impression.

CHANGING COLOURS FROM DRAB TO FAB A fresh coat of paint is a great way to change up your interiors. The Pantone colours of the year are Ultimate Grey and Illuminating Yellow — a duo that Letrice Eiseman, executive director of The Pantone Color Institute, says expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude: “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this colour combination gives us resilience and hope.” While those shades might be on trend, choosing a paint colour is not the only thing you need to think about. Interior designer Diana Ribarevski from Coco Republic says you need to ask yourself what the room will be used for. “Who will use it and at what time of day? How much natural light is there? Are there any important architectural features, large pieces of furniture or artworks? Which colours are featured in the adjacent room? Finally, what feelings and emotions do you want the room to convey?” Diana says understanding the basic concepts of a colour wheel — harmonious colours and complementary colours — can help you decide. “Working with harmonious colours will always lead to a successful result as the colours have an intrinsic harmony with each other,” she says, “while complementary colours sit opposite one another on the colour wheel, vibrating against each other and potentially clashing. But rules are made to be broken and while scientiƬc theories behind how to choose the perfect colour certainly have weight, remember that the most important thing is to select a colour that you and your family will love living with.” Perhaps you’d like something neutral, which is a failsafe for living rooms; you can add a feature wall or colour accents with decor and soft furnishings. Kitchens can look fabulous in warm earthy hues or bright crisp whites. Bedrooms are more personal. Here you can splash out and indulge your love of vibrant colours — accents of turquoise or orange, for example. Adding a textured feature wallpaper will liven up a room in an instant. In fact, wallpaper is huge right now, from geometrics to beautiful vintage looks.

A WORD ON WALLS A wall is far more than a means to deƬne a room or space; it serves as a decorative feature. In wet areas, tiled walls are the go-to, and with a vast selection of tiles on oƪer there is something to suit any taste and budget. Glass walls capture the light, make a room look more spacious and oƪer a sense of connectivity, creating a more open feel. Marie Bagnato from Bagnato Architects says plaster walls are the mainstay of interiors. “It’s a cost-driven decision as it’s the least-expensive lining material you can put on your walls,” she

home design

says. Of course, there are many other options that will give your home a bespoke character, including brick, stone, concrete and timber. Marie says timber battens can look stunning. “A bevelled solid timber baton on a feature wall in a family room adds not only texture but warmth to the space,” she says. Precast concrete slab walls look inherently beautiful, although they do come with a more expensive price tag. Marie says there’s an alternative for far less cost. “In a standard house construction with timber studs on the inside, you can line the timber stud with a

sheeting product and render over it so it looks like a troweled-on cement that looks like a concrete panel,” she says. Natural stone slabs, like limestone or marble, can take your home to the next level. “These materials add movement; they are nature’s artwork and you don’t need to hang anything else on the wall,” says Marie. Clever and innovative use of timber panelling on walling creates clean lines and a subtle sophistication. Marie says that when designing cabinetry, where that cabinetry interfaces with a wall, one option is to disguise the plaster wall in the same Ƭnish as the cabinetry. “When you use one material on a wall it gives the space a seamless, elegant look,” she shares. Marie adds that decorative eƪects like recessed sections in walls and cut-outs to hold treasured curios or art should also be considered. “They add depth, a threedimensional eƪect and become a feature or talking point,” she says.

FLOORING THAT DAZZLES The right Ʈooring can anchor the overall look and feel of your home. From concrete to tiles, vinyl planks and timber, Ʈooring options have never been so diverse and varied. Concrete Ʈooring is cool underfoot and very contemporary. It has a commanding presence in a space, but it also possesses a chameleonlike quality and blends with any look. Its strength as a Ʈooring product is linked to its durability, and it’s very low maintenance. Hardwood timber is, hard-wearing and beautiful, adding a warmth you can feel from the ground up. Solid timber Ʈooring might come with a heftier price tag than its composite counterparts, but it is timeless. Engineered timber, laminate or vinyl planks are easy to install and virtually maintenancefree, and they are available in many colours and board sizes. Tile Ʈooring has been popular for decades; hard-wearing, easy-care tiles stand the test of time. What is new in tiles is their ability to emulate other products, for example timber. Whether your style is coastal, eclectic, bohemian, classic or modern, there is a tile to match your style.

Lighting is an integral component of home design. Tabbi Long, lighting designer from Beacon Lighting, says well-designed spaces are lit in a way that is unique and individualised to the user and to the

environment. “Look at lighting like leaving a Ƭngerprint on the space and throw away the stock-standard four downlights per bedroom rule-of-thumb that has become the norm,” she says. To add ambience, low-glare and wallwash downlights are fantastic alternatives. “Strip lighting is also gaining traction and will become more commonplace in years to come,” says Tabbi. “Adding in pendant lights or wall lights as stand-alone pieces or in a cluster is also a great lighting technique for creating visual drama.” Tabbi adds that instead of a trio of pendants over benches, designers are recommending two larger evenly spaced pendants, a single pendant to one side, or a cluster of pendants hung at diƪering heights at one end of the benchtop. Non-direct lighting provided by modern Ʈoor and table lamps is a wonderful way to add a subtle glow. In bedrooms, wall and pendant lighting is a popular trend. “They add dramatic Ʈair and style to any bedroom,” says Tabbi. New eƪects include lighting that

washes down the walls. “There are many downlights that do this, from fully recessed downlights to gimbal or spot options. This look can also be achieved with track lighting, whereby the track heads can be pointed at the walls,” says Tabbi. She adds that there is also a shift towards organic, natural or raw materials being used in pendants, lamps and homewares. “Fittings that have shades made from cane, seagrass or bamboo, unreƬned organic beading, timbers, concrete and stone are extremely popular,” she shares.

home design

If you’ve always loved the idea of a gallery wall but have been a little hesitant to start one, Freddy Grant from Bluethumb has some tips to inspire you to get started. “This is the fun part, but also the hardest,” says Freddy. “Let go of familiar friendships, artworks that have been together for years and start from scratch. It’s time to get clinical.” Freddy suggests looking for groups with a common thread — “works by the same artist, complementary colours, or a particular hue throughout,” he advises. When deciding on the layout, Freddy suggests playing with how you’re going to hang your art on the Ʈoor by juxtaposing matching and complementary colours. “Experiment with spacing and trying diƪerent overall shapes,” he says. “You’ll know when it’s right. Trust your instincts. Unless your artworks are exactly the same size, it’s better to space asymmetrically. This also makes it easier to keep adding to over the years.” Freddy says he usually starts with three or four core artworks. “This anchors the look and then I add to them as I buy more art,” he says. According to Freddy, it’s OK to mix up frames on a gallery wall. “I enjoy Ƭnding bargain frames. Many framers sell great-quality frames made of oƪcuts at heavily discounted prices,” he says. “This look works particularly well if you have a theme, like portraits, or similar colours running throughout your gallery wall. The general rule of thumb is to hang art so the centre is at eye level (approximately 145cm). So think of groups as one artwork and make the centre of your gallery wall eye level.” Freddy also suggests avoiding sticky picture-hanging strips for heavy artworks. “Buy a stud Ƭnder (you can get a cheap one at Bunnings) and either nail a hook or drill a screw into a stud. If there isn’t a stud where you want to hang art, use plasterboard anchors with a screw to give good support or buy special plaster hooks that have multiple small nails. It’s all easier than it sounds. Promise!” HD

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Think out of the box when it comes to home heating

F

rom gas to wood-burning to electric — there are a number of options when it comes to heating, but which one is right for your home? Les Sperring, national sales manager at Herschel, answers a few questions about an innovative option that is gaining popularity: infrared heating.

HOW DOES HERSCHEL INFRARED WORK? Herschel infrared heats your home the same way the sun heats the earth. It uses far infrared energy to warm up the fabric of the building and all the things inside it, including you. This turns the very surfaces of your home into part of your radiant heating solution, delivering you a consistently warm and comfortable environment.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RADIANT AND CONVECTION HEAT? Simply put, convection heat is heating the air and moving it around the house. Radiant heat travels through the air and is instead absorbed by objects and the room materials themselves. Once the objects and room have been heated enough, they radiate the heat as well, and your whole room becomes part of the heating system, giving you a wonderfully cosy environment to enjoy.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF RADIANT HEAT? Heating the air is an ineƯcient heating solution because air cannot hold much heat. This is why a cool draught can cool your room quickly, or if you switch oƪ your heater or heat pump the warmth seems to disappear. Convection requires that warm air continually be created to maintain a given temperature, so it consumes more energy.

60

home design

Using convection to heat a room, you need to heat the entire volume of air. And convection heat rises, meaning most of the energy you are creating is sitting over your head where you can’t feel it. The heat that does reach you gets chilled by your windows or absorbed into the cold surfaces of the room. This does not create an ideal environment for heating a person. If you’ve ever been in a room with a convection heater on and the air seems warm but your feet are cold, this is why. Radiant heat, on the other hand, is ideal for heating people, as we are radiant ourselves. We absorb radiant heat into our bodies far better than when hot air is blown around us. Once the environment around us has reached our selected temperature, it is surprisingly easy to maintain a comfortable, warm environment lower in the room where you actually sit, without losing heat unnecessarily or being forced to run your heater continually. Have you ever sat in front of a Ƭre and marvelled at the way it heats you all the way through? This feeling is radiant heat at work. Herschel far infrared heaters get you this result with consistency, accuracy and the minimum of eƪort from you, making it a superior electric heating solution. Something else you may not have realised is that warm air attracts moisture. Heating the air inside your home actually contributes to moisture and dampness issues. Heating the home itself dries it out, reducing damp and mould.

DOES HERSCHEL INFRARED COST MORE TO RUN? Actually, no. When installed and operated correctly, it can be more cost-eƪective to warm your home over a 24-hour period than

with a heat pump. Once your home is up to temperature, it radiates that heat back out slowly. When operated with a thermostat, the heaters will heat the environment, then switch oƪ and let your home radiate that warmth back, only coming back on to recharge it again. We call this running time the cycle time. Once your home is heated up, the cycle time drops dramatically over a 24-hour period. Depending on what your home is made of, this could be as little as four hours a day for a home that is warm day and night.

WHAT ABOUT POWER PROVIDERS? Home heating is estimated at being as much as 40 per cent of the peak load to the power network, coming in the evenings of course, when we all get home from work and turn our heaters on high. With Herschel infrared, this load gets spread evenly throughout the day, warming up your home during the day to release that warmth into the evening.

WHAT ABOUT SOLAR POWER AND FREE HEATING? Herschel delivers exactly what you need – low wattage and the ability to heat up your home during the day while the sun is shining.

HOW ABOUT THE AESTHETICS? The good news is Herschel heaters look great – a slimline discreet panel that can be ceiling- or wallmounted. Available in a range of styles, from white metal to black or white glass and even mirrors. For high ceilings we have a hanging pendant version, and we also have outdoor heating so you can enjoy the feeling of the sun on the patio long after it has set. HD herschel-infrared.com.au

Discreet comfort heating by Herschel Infrared. Our black glass wall panels heat this large open plan space. Herschel Infrared panels heat the building and objects, not the air. ravel down a winding stone path and you’ll stumble upon the most magical dwelling. A stucco plaster render wraps around a quaint rectangular building, with a grand arched window letting in light and mirroring the door. Through the glass, pops of pastel colour and warm wooden Ʈooring tempt you to come inside, relax, have fun. Gold Ƭxtures glimmer in the sun and the comfort of a window-side reading nook calls your name. This is the Plaster Fun House — and it’s not hard to see why Sans-Arc Studio loved working on this compelling renovation. “Overall, this was one of the most fun and easy projects for us as a practice,” says Matiya Marovich from Sans-Arc Studio. From humble beginnings did this masterpiece grow. The original South Australian home was a two-bedroom building with the classic kitchen/laundry/bathroom lean-to at the back. Matiya and her team transformed this into a new kitchen, bathroom, laundry and dining area that not only celebrates years gone by, but captures a true sense of playfulness not often seen in modern renovations.

we love THE DINING EXTENSION TO THE KITCHEN BENCH THAT BLENDS OLD AND NEW PARTS OF THE HOME The homeowners, a professional couple in their 30s, wanted a space inspired by P&O and Art Deco architecture that also reƮected their personal style and taste. “The couple are often dressed in bold and bright colours, and they have an extensive collection of unique Italian and Czech glassware and German pottery,” says Matiya. Housing this collection was to form part of the basis for the renovation. A much larger consideration was the yard itself. The couple loves to entertain and wanted a kitchen that opened up into the garden. Space was relatively tight, but the couple still wanted to feel as if they had signiƬcantly expanded their home. “The primary move was to ‘splice’ the existing residence, opening up the dining room and connecting it to the kitchen extension,” says Matiya. running a singular kitchen island/dining table through the two spaces, which not only makes the room feel larger but connects the older and newer portions of the home. Overall, the building expanded to incorporate an additional 35sqm as a part of the 65sqm renovation. Inside, a fun and convivial atmosphere was created. High ceilings stretch across the room and make the space feel even larger. Tasmanian oak Ʈoorboards are soft underfoot and add warmth to the space. The playful pink bench with the custom terrazzo top is as sweet as fairy Ʈoss and behind it, a calming sky-blue splashback and cabinetry wall provide balance and visual relief. Plants trail down the side of the rangehood and poke their heads toward the window in a display of calculated whimsy that adds a natural element. Metallic Ƭxtures twinkle in the tapware, the lighting and the shelving, which displays the couple’s collection of glittering glassware and pottery. It’s a visual feast for the owners and their family and friends to enjoy. “The space is for entertaining, relaxing and cooking, so we wanted to make it a pleasure to do all these things in it,” says Matiya. “The inclusion of the ‘reading nook’ and the stools sitting at the bar are two spots that make the space ideal for entertaining — places where people can keep the cook company.”

This nook is a curved delight Ʈanked by a square and an arched window. The glorious arches are then continued throughout the home. Not only does an arch invite the visitor down the hall, but the shape is celebrated once more in a recessed bathroom mirror. Indeed, there’s a lot to love about the bathroom renovation, with a glorious oceanic colour scheme that incorporates Ƭxtures that seem as if they could have come straight out of an old-world luxury hotel. A walk-in shower is somehow large despite the area’s small footprint, and ample storage is available in the vanity. Overhead, a skylight is carved into the high, sloping ceiling, ensuring this room is a beacon of brightness. Outside, attention was paid to environmental impact. “The building is wrapped in highly insulated EPS panel and rendered, and embraces stacking ventilation to help cool the space in summer,” reveals Matiya. “The large steel hoods around the windows, though not providing complete shade, help keep out the harshest summer sun.” These careful considerations are yet another reason why this house truly is a marriage of clever design and fun.{HD sansarcstudio.com.au

The residence consists of three floors that feature floor-to-ceiling windows

They succeeded with a house that embraces traditional elements but surprises with modern nuances, playing with materials and irregular patterns. The clients of the new build, a family of two adults and three children, envisaged a space that was equal parts inviting, clean and stylish. “A lot of white was used throughout to create an open and spacious atmosphere, as well as downlights and chandeliers that enhance the lighting,” say Nino and Jon. “Plus, the use of Ʈoor-to-ceiling windows and glass allows natural light to pour into the home.” Encompassing three Ʈoors, the residence is proof that open-space living is a beautiful thing. It embraces shared living areas that eliminate barriers, such as walls and doors, in favour of multi-functional solutions. The Ʈoor-to-ceiling glass welcomes the sun all day and nails the indoor/outdoor concept. The double basement includes the garage and store room. The ground Ʈoor incorporates the lounge, bedroom, powder room, laundry, kitchen and dining room, while the Ƭrst Ʈoor is dedicated to the remaining four bedrooms and a bathroom. “We love the parapet modern look of the home and the overall design of the space, particularly the{use of glass and open space inside,” say the homeowners. A

s winner of the KBDi and Kitchens & Bathrooms Quarterly People’s Choice Kitchen of the Year 2020, Studio Black knows a thing or two about creating dream kitchens. The stunning creation inside Kaleen Residence in the ACT is another example of the company’s mastery. As the hero of the Ƭve-bedroom, threebathroom home, built by Canberra builder REP Building, the kitchen is imbued with elegance and warmth. “The clients are Greek and Italian, so the kitchen was designed around cooking and entertaining for their friends and large families,” says interior designer Maria Cerne of Studio Black. “The black SMEG free-standing cooker, black SMEG Victoria rangehood and the farmhouse sink were the ‘must-have’ items for this kitchen.” Glass Bellis pendants from Schots Emporium illuminate the Carrara quartz and Quantum quartz benchtops, while a splashback of Carrara tiles laid in a herringbone pattern adds to the light and airy atmosphere. “The kitchen is the heart of the home and we are already creating wonderful memories around it,” enthuses the owner. “The kids love it so much that they have started to get creative with their cooking.” Helping with the cooking is the star of the space: the gorgeous SMEG freestanding cooker. “The whole kitchen was built around the cooktop and rangehood, which the clients fell in love with the minute they laid eyes on them in the showroom,” recalls Maria. But enough about the kitchen (although we could drool over its Carrara benchtops all day!). Let’s take a look at the project as a whole. Purchased when they were in their 20s, this was the clients’ Ƭrst home. Now in their 40s, they had outgrown the original house and were looking for a family-friendly abode conducive to entertainment and hosting family and friends for long lunches or extended stays. To knock down or expand — that was the question the owners deliberated over for years. Ultimately, a knockdown/rebuild was green-lighted and the interior design by Studio Black is superb.

The brief for this “forever home” was inspired by American holidays, where the couple became enamoured with classic Hamptons-style abodes. “Classic American with a modern twist” became the desired aesthetic, deƬned by details such as patterned tiling, a barn door, Shaker-style joinery, a grand staircase, wall panelling and intricate cornices and architraves. Soaring 5.4m ceilings greet occupants at the show-stopping entry, where detailed wall panelling and an oversized black chandelier (Moselle 8 in black nickel) set the scene. “Wall panelling and wainscoting are synonymous with a classic Hamptons-style aesthetic. This was a key element in the design of the home,” says Maria. “The wall panelling used throughout is by Intrim Mouldings. The client’s brother, Ben, is a carpenter, so he meticulously did all the wainscoting — an absolutely huge job. We showed Ben a range of looks we loved for each space and he recreated this for us. The poor painters wanted to cry for days after they saw the amount of detailed wall panelling that needed painting!” A 150kg custom-made barn door divides the formal entry from the open-plan living, kitchen and dining space. Made from reclaimed timber, it Ƭlls the home with character. Another space worthy of adoration is the laundry, which is lined with handmade Spanish Ʈoor tiles. Bold and beautiful, the tiles are complemented by crisp white joinery and benchtops and a white herringbone splashback. Harmonising the interior and exterior of the home was crucial to maintain cohesiveness and Ʈow. Pale-grey paint render, white trims and pops of black used on the exterior also feature inside the home. The colour palette is a neutral mix of classic white, soft greys and charcoals, with accents of black. “The interior design aesthetic was contemporary yet classic,” outlines Maria. “The aim was to create an atmosphere that felt eƪortlessly elegant, was very detailed, but had a warm and welcoming vibe.” We’d say that’s a job well done! The clients — a young family — dreamed of a dwelling that was clean and simple with classic beach house vibes. The kitchen nails the brief with its neutral colour palette. Shades of white and grey mingle with cool timbers for a laid-back look destined to facilitate beach-side bliss. Matt-black tapware breaks up the colour scheme and oƪers a modern touch. The standout of the kitchen is a semi-Ʈoating island that creates more visual space. “The frame of the island bench is mitred to the drawer fronts but also has a semi-Ʈoating element to the breakfast bar end,” notes Graham. room open up on two sides onto the wrap-around balcony overlooking the pool, with stunning views of both sea and hinterland,” says Tom, who was also the builder on this project. “A kitchen with sunset views is hard to beat.” The changes to the kitchen didn’t stop there. The room was opened up, with high ceilings creating a sense of space. A butler’s pantry was added, complete with a copper-penny mosaictile splashback, and a custom-made rangehood was created when Tom couldn’t Ƭnd one to suit. “I made one from a modiƬed AC duct Ƭtted with a black stainless integrated extractor unit,” Tom says modestly, as if whipping up a rangehood is part and parcel of any renovation. Other highlights of the kitchen include the very functional island bench, where a shiplapped spotted gum is the hero. This material complements the native trees growing right outside the home and adds warmth to the otherwise dark aesthetic of the interior. “Light grey and black emphasise the bold lines used,” Tom says of their colour scheme. “A plain background really brings out the colour in our pictures and the view of the rainforest through the window.” Green living was prioritised in this renovation. “Louvres at the top of the windows use the natural airƮow to cool the property, which works amazingly well,” Tom says. He was also able to repurpose many of the original building materials, with the hardwood roof trusses used as screening and balustrading and the old decking and roof battens used to make the internal doors, a vanity unit and some shelving. “I used all the old bricks to Ƭll in any unwanted openings,” Tom says. Solar panels and solar heating for the pool, as well as a water tank for the garden, have also been installed. One of the absolute highlights of this renovation was the roof. A simple rooƮine was created without any recognisable fascia or gutters. “I worked closely with my roofer, Matt Wilson from Roofbitz Metal RooƬng, to design a gutter that looked identical to a fascia and the same size as a Ʈashing,” Tom says. “I think this has a huge eƪect on the look of the home and it boldly frames the outline of the roof.” Of course, this renovation had its challenges just like any building project. “My memorable moments from the project were not necessarily the most enjoyable,” Tom says. “The Ƭrst Christmas we spent in the house saw me working for the entire holiday period in the dirt, tying the steel and pouring the concrete footings for the retaining walls so as to be ready for the pool builder.

“I promised Louise and the boys a pool for the summer, and a gigantic pool it is, but it nearly killed me”— Tom Roebuck “I promised Louise and the boys a pool for the summer, and a gigantic pool it is, but it nearly killed me,” Tom continues. “I kept my promise to them — and also made a promise to myself never to give myself such a ridiculous deadline again.” But all his hard work has truly been worth it. Tom has transformed this home from a three-bedroom, one-bathroom dwelling into a three-bedroom, three-bathroom masterpiece complete with parents’ retreat, vast living/dining area, kitchen with butler’s pantry, oƯce, gym and laundry. “And there’s an adjoining one-bed, one-bath with kitchenette,” Tom says, almost as an afterthought. The grand renovation was destined to become the Roebucks’ forever home — yet thanks to the burgeoning market, Tom and Louise are now considering doing it all again. “I love giving old homes new life and transforming living spaces from dingy, dated boxes into light, cool places,” says Tom. Terrazzo was the perfect modern solution to complement this old-world space. Original features were restored and kept in place wherever possible

T

here’s an undeniable charm to be found at Buƪelsdrift, located in Ladismith, South Africa. This collection of farm buildings juts out from the surrounding landscape in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes. They straddle the line between whimsy and nature, as if they grew from the very earth itself. Yet there’s nothing unintentional about this restoration by SAOTA and Jaco Booyens

Architect. In fact, their clever and respectful work on this property garnered them a gold medal in the 2019 Domus Restoration and Conservation Award in Italy. For SAOTA director Greg Truen, the project began when he acquired the farm in 2016. While some refurbishments had taken place in the ‘70s, the main building was largely untouched since its construction back in 1852. Yet this did not deter Greg, who says that it was “in good condition,

considering”. His vision for the property was to restore the buildings to a functional and visually appealing state while still respecting the history rooted deep in their foundations. This respect is evident in Greg and Jaco’s choice of materials. A thin lime plaster was used on the interior walls between the central living room and the bedrooms on either side. This textural highlight oƪers a nod to the property’s humble beginnings, where walls were made from

700mm-wide poured mud or clay layers that were cast individually, as was popular with Dutch settlers in the Cape at the time. Greg notes that it was nice to leave “a little of that construction history visible so you can get a bit of a story of how these buildings were put together”. In the living area, the ceiling was able to be restored with the original yellowwood beams stretching over this inviting space. The Ʈooring enjoys a strong connection to the land. The kitchen, kitchen courtyard, kitchen dining area, bathroom and front stoep all enjoy a mix of cement with “stone pavers taken out of the veld”, Greg says. This helps ground the property and makes it feel even more like it’s truly a part of the surrounding landscape. Even when new additions were required, Greg and Jaco ensured they were done as respectfully as possible. The shower, which is now housed in an original Ƭreplace recess, and the kitchen island were both Ƭnished in a contemporary terrazzo slab that captures a sort of modern-vintage aesthetic. “We looked for a contemporary material that spoke to the original materials,” says Greg, with the concrete and aggregate in the terrazzo a modern mirror of the room’s stone and cement pavers. To keep the space feeling as true to its roots as possible, all kitchen appliances are stored below the counter with none sitting at a higher level — other than the extractor fan, Greg adds. This also makes the open-plan kitchen/dining area feel like a true social hub where the family can gather, with a raised 200mm barrier above the kitchen counter blocking prep work from the view of those in the dining space. Yet it’s not just the kitchen that has enjoyed a contemporary addition. A double-sided Ƭreplace between the kitchen and lounge oƪers warmth, and narrow skylights ensure the bathroom is bathed in natural light.

The vanity was custom-made using poplar in a nod to the buildings’ heritage. Stone pavers, taken from the surrounding veld, were used on the front stoop as well as in various rooms throughout the home

Poplar shutters oƪer a sense of privacy and add to the already strong thermal-resistant qualities of the building. A poplar custom-made vanity is another example of history being reinvented — poplar-branch lintels were used in the original building “to act as tension and compression members in the homogenised mud”, says Roger Fisher, architectural historian and author of Buƪelsdrift — An Anatomy of a Vernacular. The main farmhouse wasn’t the only structure on the property to undergo restoration. Upon second glance, a beacon of brilliant pink draws the eye — it’s the wine store, or wynkelder, named in reference to a time when grapes were grown on the farm. From the outside in, this building is all about heritage. The external paint colour celebrates the practice in the Karoo of mixing lime to make a light-red or pink colour, as well as serving as a nod to the similarities in Cape and Mexican historic architecture. Inside, the Ʈoors were levelled and Ƭnished with more stone harvested from the surrounding veld. The Ʈoor plan was redesigned, with the living area and kitchen downstairs and the bedroom and bathroom relocated to the mezzanine above. But perhaps the most visually striking feature of this quaint building is the

This contemporary addition does not touch the existing walls of the building. Instead, it Ʈoats, connecting at one single point on the Ʈoor and the mezzanine levels. A system of cables suspends the American oak treads, which continue the connection to the land the rest of the farm enjoys. A modern decorative timber screen is a light contemporary addition that marries design Ƭnesse with the warmth of wood for a feature that somehow suits the historic building. Finally, the pump house was created for the property’s irrigation system. This new mud-brown building pays homage to the traditional dwellings already on the property and allowed the designers a chance to really get their hands dirty. “It was an opportunity to experiment and test some ideas we had regarding contemporary architecture built using traditional techniques,” says Greg. Throughout the renovation, respect for the land was truly prioritised. Even the stunning swimming pool was Ƭlled with water from a borehole, which runs down a channel and, eventually, to the dam itself. “It’s really just a place for the water to pause on its way to the irrigation system,” Greg says. houses & apartments vermont cabin where the owners can connect with nature, each other and their history. “Vermont Cabin is located on a heavily wooded, hilly site on land the client’s family has owned for generations,” says Tom Kundig, principal of Olson Kundig. This sense of heritage is what led to the building’s construction. One of the owners had very fond memories of her family’s cabin that she visited growing up, and Vermont Cabin allows her to share similar experiences with her partner and two children today. It’s located in

Stowe, Vermont, near the family’s relatives. Yet one look at the dwelling and you could be forgiven for thinking it was a part of the hillside itself. This home is tucked away among the trees where it causes the least amount of disturbance to the natural site. Olson Kundig designed this aƪordable getaway for the family that could be used at any time of the year. “They wanted something that would feel like a tree house in the woods,” says Tom. “The home also needed to be very durable to stand up to the sometimes

harsh weather in the area.” This guided the material choice for Tom, with elements chosen that would require zero maintenance over the lifespan of the residence. “This is my approach for any projects located in remote or mountainous areas,” reveals Tom, “as the demanding climate is hard on materials and, if maintenance is needed, it may be diƯcult to access the site during certain times of the year.” For the building’s exterior, weathering steel was chosen. “Not only is this an extremely durable, no-maintenance material, but it will oxidise over time and continue to harmonise with the natural colours of its surroundings — dirt, bark on trees, and leaves in the fall (autumn),” shares Tom. “Likewise, the exposed concrete will mellow out over time and start to pick up more of the colouration of the local soil and glacial till.” The other two primary materials used in the building’s exterior were glass and aluminium, which both require no maintenance yet are extremely tough, ensuring the interior of the cabin will remain incredibly comfortable no matter what the weather is like outside.

DURABLE MATERIALS MAKE UP THE BUILDING’S EXTERIOR, ENSURING THE INTERIOR WILL REMAIN COMFORTABLE EVEN IN THE MOST EXTREME WEATHER Inside, the home is light and bright thanks to the expansive windows that make the most of the cabin’s position. White walls blend into the snow-dusted landscape, with the high wooden ceilings a nod to the trees beyond. The main body of the house enjoys concrete Ʈoors that oƪer an industrial aesthetic. This expanse is broken up with warm maple wood in the bedrooms, allowing for a softer look and feel in these more intimate parts of the dwelling. An open-plan living space makes the most of the building’s third Ʈoor, capturing views of the landscape. Cosy furnishings were chosen that invite the family to gather around the Ʈames Ʈickering in the Ƭreplace as they enjoy the serenity that only time in the woods can bring. Tones of grey and blue reminiscent of the ever-changing Vermont sky are splashed throughout the kitchen — yet the personality of the owners truly shines through in this space. A rainbow of stools are tucked beneath the island bench, with a selection of colourful books on display to one side. Floating stairs connect the Ʈoors and again allow that sense of lightness to prevail. “The stair treads also reuse wood from trees that were removed from the site,” says Tom, mentioning one of the environmental considerations the team worked into the design. Two bedrooms are located on the second Ʈoor, as well as a bathroom with a shower and a soaking tub. The ground level includes a garage, mudroom, powder room and guest bedroom. Lighting was carefully considered, with black pendants dripping like stalactites above the stairs and a round moon-like orb suspended in front of one of the bedroom windows. Yet of all these incredible features, it’s the memories the family create here that they will treasure the most. “This cabin carries on a family legacy of connecting with both this special landscape and with one another,” says Tom. “It’s continuing that sense of stewardship for the next generation.” HD olsonkundig.com

t only takes one look at the striking Vibo Tværvej house to know it’s something special. The steel roof of the quonset-like building creates an arch reminiscent of the sun rising over the horizon, with the wooden base of the home a tribute to its natural surrounds. “This summer residence is located in a plantation close to the sea,” says Stefan Valbæk from Valbæk Brørup Architects. “With the barrelvaulted, half-circled roof, we came up with a form that not only invites in nature, but also connects the architecture of the house to traditional, simply formed dwellings.” Yet the design choices here were anything but simple. The only prefabricated parts in the construction were the corrugated steel frames and the steel roof panels. The rest of the build was completed on-site. Risks were taken, with the structure almost entirely comprised from one key material. “It feels so natural and simple to just use wood for a house in the woods,” says Stefan. “It makes you feel part of nature when you’re inside and around the home.

The loft adds another dimension and makes the most of the space in this home with a Ƭve-metre-high ceiling

Combined with the barrel-vaulted metal roof, you get a rural and modern feeling all in one.” This roof rises an entire 5m from the ground, which is the maximum allowed under Danish building regulations. “The 5m-high living room is just thrilling,” adds Stefan. These dramatic high ceilings create an almost church-like atmosphere in the building’s interior, which is apt considering one of the owners of the house is actually a priest. “Every day she works in and around her church and on Sundays she gives a sermon, standing in a space full of atmosphere and with a special ceiling,” says Stefan. “We didn’t directly design a church for her as her summer house. But we might all have found some inspiration in her work.” Enormous windows on either side of the residence see light Ʈooding in to warm the timber Ʈoors. These south- and north-facing panes are some of Stefan’s favourite parts of the building thanks to their grand scale, which sees the connection to nature ampliƬed via the view.

SPEND TIME INSIDE THIS BUILDING AND YOU WILL INVARIABLY FEEL A SENSE OF PEACE, AS IF YOU AND THE BRILLIANCE OF NATURE ARE AT ONE

Despite this drama, spending time in the home is almost like escaping to a small Nordic cabin. The use of pine in the interior promotes a rustic aesthetic, which is miles away from the high-gloss, white interiors in vogue in the city. Spend time inside this building and you will invariably feel a sense of peace, as if you and the brilliance of nature are at one. Natural tones are celebrated throughout. The kitchen is devoid of white, with dark-blue cabinetry paying homage to the brilliant sky above. The bathroom enjoys simple ochre tiles, which warm the space and contrast with the pine without overwhelming the viewer. Yet perhaps our favourite bathroom feature is not inside the house at all. An outdoor shower is accessible from the bathroom and allows these homeowners to wash away the troubles of the day to the tune of the birds and the bees in the warmth of the Danish summer breeze.

Arched windows bookend the building and allow the homeowners to feel truly connected to the wilderness beyond

This isn’t the only place the homeowners are able to enjoy the great outdoors. The kitchen/living/dining area features bifold doors that open out to a large deck complete with table and chairs. The chimney stretches up to the heavens, providing an industrial edge to the otherwise rustic design. A loft space bridges two ends of the home, creating the ultimate play area for the couple’s two young children. There’s a true sense of adventure in climbing the ladder up to this secret escape — it’s simply irresistible for young and old alike. Thankfully, the master bedroom also enjoys a mezzanine level, allowing the grown-ups to experience multi-level living as well. This is a three-bedroom house, with two other small rooms located in this northern section of the building. Storage is catered for with cabinetry lining the hall — an essential component of any holiday home. Black lights jut out from these same hallway walls like branches stemming from a tree, providing a soft glow that further romanticises the already beautiful space. HD vba.dk/vibotvaervej

THE BENEFITS OF ELECTRIC FIREPLACES

Give the gas a rest and save yourself the splinters from wood burners by investing in an electric ǻreplace from Real Flame

I

n recent years, electric Ƭreplaces have experienced a boom in popularity, and with good reason. The modern electric Ƭreplaces of today are light years apart from earlier designs, with advanced technologies such as LED lights oƪering hyper-realistic Ʈames allowing changes in colour, brightness, pattern, speed and cycle pattern. Some even go the extra mile, providing audio and visual elements such as simulated sparks, crackling sounds and variable ember beds for a truly quality Ƭreplace experience. As developments in visual graphics, design and eƯciency have been made, more people are steering towards electric Ƭreplaces as a lower-

134

home design

cost, green, functional and aesthetically pleasing alternative to wood and gas Ƭreplaces. Here are the top 10 reasons, as listed by the experts at Real Flame, why electric Ƭreplaces may just be your next go-to purchase when you wish to enjoy the beauty and atmosphere of Ʈames, without the fuss.

1. PLUG IN AND PLAY When the cold hits, you want warmth fast. This is where electric Ƭreplaces really do showcase their modern ingenuity, delivering heat with the click of a button. Our ancestors would certainly be jealous of this instant heat, and the delight of

receiving warmth with just one click (especially in Melbourne’s unpredictable weather) is something not even this generation will tire of!

2. THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY Want a multi-sensory experience? Electric Ƭreplaces have advanced leaps and bounds in the past few years, with technologies delivering a truly authentic Ƭreplace experience. Think technology like Optimyst, which uses an ultraƬne water mist to mimic Ʈame and smoke, or Opti-V, a unique and patent-protected design that combines ultra-realistic Ʈickering Ʈames with three-dimensional LED logs that sporadically

spark. All this and more can create an incredibly realistic 3D illusion of Ʈames — all without the temper of wood or gas.

3. THERMOSTAT CONTROL Diƪering from gas and wood Ƭreplaces, electric Ƭres oƪer ultimate control of the heat output via thermostat controls. Select the exact temperature to suit your needs and let your room be as toasty as you wish. Now that’s what we call genius.

4. CONVENIENT TOUCH CONTROLS ALLOW FOR AN INSTANT FIRE Matches and logs or kindling are so last century. You can be enjoying the comforts of a Ƭre instantly with the mere tap of your Ƭnger. An electric Ƭreplace’s built-in touch controls and a multi-function remote control provide great convenience and plenty of presentation options.

5. CHEAPER TO INSTALL A modern electric Ƭreplace is generally very easy to install, with most simply needing to be plugged in. Wood and gas Ƭreplaces, on the other hand, can clock up quite a lot of installation dollars, sometimes even more than the actual Ƭreplace itself. With electric Ƭreplaces, you save big dollars, with no Ʈues or complicated structures to think about.

6. NO POLLUTION One of the simplest ways to make the transition to a “greener” lifestyle is by selecting an energyeƯcient heating product. As electric Ƭreplaces do not use natural resources like gas or wood to produce a Ƭre, no combustible by-products are released into the atmosphere, meaning you have a reliable and eƯcient way of avoiding air pollution and are choosing one of the greenest heating options available on the market.

7.EFFICIENT LED technology used to create realistic Ʈames in electric Ƭreplaces is far more eƯcient than older-style incandescent bulbs, with an average lifespan of more than 75,000 hours. Electric Ƭreplace inserts are ideal for zone heating, a heating method that involves heating rooms within your home while keeping your central thermostat lower so that, once again, no energy is wasted heating unused areas.

8. FLAME WITHOUT THE HEAT Want to enjoy the Ʈicker of Ʈames in the height of summer? Therein lies the beauty of electric Ƭreplaces. With modern electric Ƭres, you don’t need to have the heater on to enjoy the Ʈame eƪect. Simply choose the non-heat-emitting option and enjoy Ʈames all year round.

9. SAFER If you have little kids (or furry friends) running around the house, safety will be at the top of your list. With electric Ƭreplaces, there is no direct

Ʈame, meaning children and pets cannot reach in and burn themselves. Furthermore, when the Ƭre is on “Ʈame eƪect only” mode, absolutely no heat is emitted from the appliance, avoiding any potential for burns.

10. FLEXIBILITY WITH DESIGN — FLAMES WITH DIFFERENT COLOURS Electric Ƭres oƪer a world of possibility when it comes to design. Many diƪerent styles exist, from traditional inset Ƭres to hang-on-the-wall contemporary designs and electric stoves. If you are living in an apartment, electric Ƭreplaces are the perfect option as they don’t require any use of a chimney or a lot of building work. As there is

no combustion or Ʈame, they are completely safe and don’t carry a carbon monoxide risk (especially useful for small areas). So there you have it — 10 reasons why electric Ƭreplaces are a great option for those looking for a functional and eƯcient yet aesthetically captivating Ƭreplace for their home. While gas and wood Ƭreplaces still have their place, electric Ƭreplaces are a great choice, oƪering Ʈames that are accessible to everyone all year round. Real Flame boasts one of the largest selections of electric Ƭreplaces in Australia. Check out their website for the full product line. HD

2/ Creating art is Kim’s passion. She is a self-taught artist who says that every time she walks near a blank canvas, she feels something explode inside her. It is not something she can explain or pass on to someone else — it’s always the beginning of a new original creation. A number of years ago, Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer. While she had her treatment and surgeries, she used painting as therapy. It was her way to shut out the world, to release anger and to learn how to relax again. For Kim it was a big call and now cancer-free, she is living her dream and painting every day in her home studio in Windsor, NSW. Kim says the beauty of nonrepresentational art is that artists can create the story within the painting. They can ask themselves, “Why do these colours interact with each other?” or “What does this symbolise?” And with those questions, the imagination brings about answers. She works with many forms of media, including acrylic paints on canvas and mixed media with resin top coats. Kim’s work can be found in collectors’ homes all over the world. kimswitzerart.com 142

GENEVIEVE MONTGOMERIE 1/ Genevieve weaves eƪortlessly between social realism and a contemporary take on the techniques of the Old Masters. Her works are a testament to the light, depth, moods, possibilities and energies of the cleansing “Water of Life” she Ƭnds herself immersed in. Genevieve studied visual arts and travelled to Western Australia after graduating from Melbourne University. There she discovered the intoxicating colour of the Indian Ocean and the magic it shed on Perth’s coastline. It was there she began sketching and painting Western Australia’s coast. A few years ago, an Aboriginal spiritual healer friend spoke to her about her creativity: “Stop wading in the water, sister ... come swim with me.” From that point on, Genevieve worried less about weekly deadlines and people’s opinions and more about her need to watch and to capture, to dive in and reinvigorate by breathing in all that is mesmerising about the waters that surround us and translating that with paint. bluethumb.com.au/ genevieve-montgomerie

KATE ROGERS 3/ Somewhere between a sweet reverie, high spirits and a deep appreciation of what’s human and feminine is the work of Kate Rogers. In less than six months, Kate has amassed a diverse following of collectors and is fast becoming one of the most popular artists on Bluethumb, all the while maintaining the playful, inquisitive nature her art is increasingly well known for. From the moment Kate could hold a brush, her mum encouraged and championed her spontaneous, colourful, irreverent and messy creations. Lockdown gave Kate more time at home and, like so many of us, she was looking for more joy and meaning in her life. One day she began painting — a lot — and didn’t stop. She says she likes to think of it as her Forrest Gump moment — the one where he starts running. She does remember thinking her new paintings seemed diƪerent to previous works. She says they were unstructured and “fell out of her”. In some ways she’d returned to how she began painting, but now with the aesthetic experiences and heavier inƮuences of her adult life. bluethumb.com.au/kateerogers

KATHRYN FENTON

4/ Kathryn Fenton is a celebrated painter who has exhibited widely around Australia. Her work, described as “expressionist, allegorical, otherworldly”, has been acknowledged by prestigious awards. It’s hard to pigeonhole Kathryn as one type of artist. “I am a strong believer that one’s art should evolve and this can only happen if the artist continually questions the process which, in turn, produces various innovations,” says Kathryn. This attitude towards her profession has propelled Kathryn towards challenges and opportunities that have made her the artist she is today. artloversaustralia.com.au/ artist/kathryn-fenton/

ISABELLE MENIN 5/ It is immediately apparent that Isabelle Menin’s artistic background is in painting. Her bright colours and invigorating, fanciful manipulation of texture and materiality have enthralled the art community. Isabelle’s works are like vortexes, pulling viewers in deeper and deeper. She describes her compositions as “inland photographs and disordered landscapes”. They’re a means of drawing parallels between the complexity of the human character and that of nature. The inspiration for her work is drawn in part from Peter Paul Rubens and the so-called “Flemish Primitives”, an artistic circle prominent in the 15th and 16th centuries that included Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling and Rogier van der Weyden. Isabelle’s link to the Flemish masters can be seen in her attempt to create a distinctive form of reality inside Ƭctional worlds. lumas.com/artist/isabelle_menin/

DEBBIE CARSON 6/ As an artist, Debbie’s earliest memory of drawing was when she was six years old and was allowed to sit at her dad’s architecture drawing table and use his treasured box of Derwent pencils. Her love of drawing never left. She’s been known to paint in her PJs on the back deck on a Sunday morning or sit in the garden with paper and charcoal. Art is a big part of who Debbie is and when she’s had periods of not being creative, she says she’s felt out of touch with herself. Getting behind the camera is a more recent artistic pursuit for Debbie. She says taking photos with her phone on daily walks last year Ʈicked a switch. A knee injury stopped her walks but catapulted her to the next level. Debbie says there’s something compelling about early summer mornings before most people are up, when it’s just her and the dawn (and perhaps a pelican, surfer or photographer). Debbie’s training is in visual arts (painting and drawing) and she is a self-taught photographer. She says she’s learning from her many errors, which aren’t always camera-related but rather the comical determination to get her shot. Instagram deb.carson, Deb_Carson_Photography

GEORGE HALL

This compelling abstract impressionism artist has established himself as a global powerhouse in the competitive world of art Words Carrol Baker

F

or three decades, George Hall travelled the world as a textile and clothing designer. But he always loved to paint, and with the proliferation of social media he began selling his artwork online. Within three months of selling his Ƭrst painting, his career as an artist exploded. “I was so busy I left my full-time job, opened my own gallery and had my Ƭrst sell-out exhibition,” he recalls. Today, George’s art is sold internationally, with agents in Paris, London and New York, to name a few. Art is something he says he was born into; his father was an architect, illustrator and an artist. At school he excelled in art and went on to study textile design at Wellington Polytechnic in New Zealand. George describes his work as abstract impressionism. “I’m an artist/painter who embraces equally modern and traditional artistic

144

home design

disciplines,” he says. Some pieces are intoxicating, with seemingly millions of Ƭne brush strokes. His most popular works are his Freehand Series; he’s painted up to 3m in this style. “These works are made up of a mass of brush strokes intertwining with one another, merging together to draw the viewer in with colour and depth,” he explains. George’s work tugs at the heart strings — the exact subject of one of his collections, “The Optimist”, which consists of mixed-media paintings of a heart on a printed collage of positive words. His art is soothing and comforting, Ƭlled with warmth and energy. George says he has one Ƭrm rule about art in his life: “It must be calming and positive as I believe what you have on your walls is what you will manifest in your life.” His art is mostly crafted with acrylic paints, which he mixes himself. He also creates mixed-media pieces where he combines printing, painting and glazing.

His inspiration is drawn from the world around him. “A shadow of a chair, a ripped poster on billboards, the wind through the trees, a Ʈock of birds Ʈying north,” he shares. When it comes to furniture, George loves natural ash wood pieces. “Mostly Scandinavian design mixed with slightly rustic industrial architecture,” he says. “This style blends well with large colourful paintings, thickly woven rugs, wooden Ʈoors, and soft furnishings in natural tones with small bright highlights of green, red and orange hues.” Given that he’s worked in design for many years, George says he always considers where the Ƭnal work will hang and makes his canvases to the size he feels a space needs. “I’m well versed in most digital design programs so I can create insitu drafts into any space, allowing the collector to see how it will look,” he says. SUSAN CHRISTIE

Colourful and playful with a modernist twist — that’s how this artist describes her own work Words Carrol Baker

A

rt is very much a family aƪair for this award-winning painter and ceramic artist who calls North Shore Auckland home. Susan’s parents were both creative types. “From making and designing anything from clothes to furniture, my parents made everything for the pure pleasure and the added bonus of saving money,” recalls Susan. She has happy childhood memories of immersing herself in nature and getting creative. “I’d spend hours digging up clay in the back garden and making little pinch pots,” she remembers. Despite her love of art, she chose a diƪerent path and went on to study psychology. But, like a slow burn, her creativity continued to smoulder. After registering as a psychologist, Susan began taking night classes in creative pursuits like

ceramics and interior design. “When I look back, it’s like that creative DNA was always there — I just didn’t recognise it,” she says. It wasn’t long before Susan realised that art really was an undeniable itch she just had to scratch. After she attended painting classes through the Browne School of Art, Matthew Browne encouraged her to complete a Ƭne arts degree, juggling parenthood and her studies. From there Susan set up her business, Formantics. “I Ƭnally found what makes my tail wag,” she says. “I’m truly passionate about making original artworks using my favourite mediums — clay and paint.” Susan’s art is astute, innately beautiful and clever. The longer a piece of her work holds your gaze, the more you peel back its layers. Susan draws her inspiration from a number of diƪerent

modalities and when they meet at a juncture, that’s where her art comes to life. “My work occurs on the edge of contemporary visual culture where the traditional disciplines of art, design, fashion and craft are blurred,” she explains. Some of Susan’s most popular work is her tribal set. “It’s inspired by human group dynamics and reƮects my curiosity in how spatial relationships impact on our senses and behaviour,” she says. When choosing things for her home, Susan is drawn to simple forms in furniture. “I’m currently coveting Tim Webber’s Hem Hai chair (I’d have it covered in a burnt orange velvet). I have just purchased the Line Duo table lamp by Douglas & Bec,” she says. Textiles also captivate Susan. Her top favourites include Greenhouse Interiors bed linen, Tricia Guild and Bonnie and Neil. s your home a beachside cottage Ƭlled with character and warmth? A contemporary urban abode with cutting-edge style? A house in the ‘burbs you are renovating? Or perhaps you have an eco-chic dwelling that pays homage to the natural environment? No matter what your home’s style, there are many components that make up its exterior appeal and overall presentation, including walling, cladding, rooƬng, windows and doors.

IT’S A WRAP

Cladding is the material that is Ƭtted to the external wall system of a home or commercial property. There are a few diƪerent wall systems in Australia, the most common being a structural single timber stud system frame. On the inside, internal cladding like plasterboard is Ƭtted, and on the outside, external cladding materials such as brick, Ƭbrecement or weatherboard are used. Brisbane architect Shaun Lockyer from Shaun Lockyer Architects says that when making decisions about cladding,

he always discusses the importance of balance with his clients. “We often talk about the sliding scale between beauty, history and nostalgia, and on the other side is pragmatism,” he says. “Most people want to achieve a happy balance between an aesthetic outcome and one that doesn’t represent too much maintenance.” One of Shaun’s favourite cladding materials is natural timber. Its warmth is enduring and weatherboard is a product that can work with both traditional and modern builds. He says it is a particularly good choice for character homes. “Rough-sawn boards where you can see the circular movements of the blade look remarkable,” he says. “You get a perfectly imperfect outcome that has a beauty and serendipity about it.” Companies such as Boral produce hardwood timber products that are designed to showcase the natural beauty of timber. They can be pre-primed and site-painted and are available in a wide range of proƬles. Brick cladding is still a popular choice, but these days in contemporary homes it’s often combined

with other materials, particularly in houses that are double storey. Shaun says he uses brick not as a primary product, but for decorative purposes instead. “We use it to express the architecture of the building rather than just as a material that gets shrouded by render,” he explains. “Or we bag and paint it, which tips a hat to the 1960s modern period.” Organic natural products like rammedearth walls are also Ƭnding their way into modern architecture. Sydney architect Jo Gillies from Archisoul Architects says this ancient technology is becoming more mainstream because of its eco-friendly ethos and feel-good factor. “Emotionally you resonate more with it — it’s more natural than some other materials and it has good thermal qualities,” she says. Jo says organic products are very much in demand at present. “These natural materials like rammed earth can make you feel grounded, and we all want to feel grounded in this crazy world at the moment,” she shares. Rammed earth can also be mixed with other materials to create a beautiful designer eƪect. “For example,” says Jo, “your architecture might have a smooth concrete wall, then a glass section, then a rammed-earth wall that breaks up the whole look and gives it a stunning overall eƪect.” If you are incorporating diƪerent external walling materials, Jo cautions not to overdo it. “It’s the careful placement of the walls, how they interrelate to each other and how they balance that is key to a successful outcome,” she says. According to Jo, hempcrete is another walling product that is gaining popularity. “It’s a young industry — a lot of pioneering people are working hard on it. It’s rodent-proof, bushƬre-proof, it looks good, feels good and is thermally responsive,” she says. Then of course there are Ƭbre-cement products. These have been around for a

while but they continue to evolve with more robust attributes and stunning designs. They are gaining a Ƭrm foothold as an industry favourite. Shaun says there are many good reasons why Ƭbre-cement is a great option. “Fibre-cement products are resilient, hold paint better than timber as the material is impervious to water, and they’re stable and durable,” he says. Fibre-cement products can be vertical or horizontal boards, or even large panels. With clean vertical lines and vertically grooved panelling, James Hardie Axon cladding is a popular product. With their earthy beauty, copper or zinc products take a project to the next level in architectural style, says Shaun. They are signiƬcantly more expensive, however. “The design opportunities and nuances that one can achieve with these sorts of products is extraordinary,” he says. “They are handmade materials so can be folded, walls can be turned into awnings, eaves, Ʈashings and into fascias.” Metal-cladding products like Colorbond are also making their mark, with 22 diƪerent colours to choose from. The product is

154

home design

lightweight, won’t Ʈake or peel, and it’s very easy to maintain. It adds a sleek designer look to a home. Then there is concrete — low maintenance, durable, moisture-resistant and with sound thermal properties. It’s a material Shaun is very passionate about. “If you can imagine it, it can be built in concrete,” he says. “It’s a solid material but its ability to take on shape and form is almost without limits.”

COOL COVERINGS A home’s roof is not only a way to protect what’s within it; it plays a pivotal role in energy eƯciency too. Of course, a home’s roof is also part of its overall aesthetic appeal. Have you ever noticed a house that seems to tick all the boxes, but something lets it down although you can’t quite put your Ƭnger on it? It could be the roof. It might be dated, unkempt, or not match the architecture of the residence. When selecting a rooƬng material, it needs to complement your home’s architecture and colour palette. Most commonly in Australia, rooƬng products are made from metal sheeting and also tiles, including

shingle, terracotta, concrete and ceramic. With Australia’s often searing temperatures during summer, new innovations in rooƬng have seen an emergence of cooling rooƬng systems designed to reƮect more sunlight so less heat is absorbed. Fire-resistant rooƬng is also important due to the increasing number of homes lost from bushƬres sweeping through drier zones. Green rooƬng is now coming into its own, with more homeowners opting for roof terraces or roof gardens. Shaun says increasing numbers of rooftop gardens are the result of rising costs to buy and build. “With the increased cost of land, clients are seeing the extra investment in creating gardens and landscaping in the sky as an added amenity,” he says. Jo agrees that green roofs and rooftop terraces are fabulous ways to extend living areas and create green spaces at home. “If they’re well designed, they can provide privacy and many homes can accommodate them,” she says. Planning is key and good drainage is important. Check with your local authority as restrictions and rules will apply.

THE FINAL TOUCHES Walling, cladding and rooƬng — all of these play a part in your home’s aesthetic, but Ƭnding the right windows and doors is important to tie the look together. Windows and doors are unique to the other external elements in that they can be viewed from both the interior and exterior of your home. Function is important, and doors and windows that oƪer privacy if needed allow free-Ʈowing air and provide security. But of course, in exterior spaces, the right look is important too. The right entry door creates a warm, welcoming vibe and Ƭrst impressions matter. While the architectural Ƭnish and style of the door are important, so is the material that it’s made of. Make sure the door you choose is Ƭt for purpose (an

external door rather than an internal door) and that it’s durable — robust enough to thwart unwanted intruders and to withstand the elements. Wooden doors are the mainstay of the construction industry. They’re versatile, strong, timeless and of course stylish. Wood is porous, but more sophisticated construction techniques and Ƭnishes have improved its longevity and eƯciency. A steel door can be both elegant and strong, adding functionality as well as beauty to the entrance to your home. A bespoke steel door adds inherent character and an artistic Ʈourish. Composite doors are usually constructed with medium-density Ƭbreboard (MDF) and have a beautiful smooth Ƭnish. They’re strong, durable and less expensive than solid timber.

Windows can be built architectural components that are unique features of a home, so they’re also important in how the exterior of your home presents overall. Beautiful and distinctive windows can increase the value and prestige of your property too. Windows are available in a multitude of designs including sliding, hinged, louvred, double-hung, casement, bifold, bay and more. Then of course there are customdesigned windows including oval, pentagon, hexagon, triangular, trapezoidal, cathedral or curved glass. When choosing windows, selecting frame types and styles that match when in close placement with each other gives the home a more uniform look. HD

R

eƮecting back on the last 12 months, we’ve seen dramatic changes in the way we live, work and play. People are re-evaluating what is important to them and creating sanctuaries at home that are comfortable, uplifting and beautiful. Interior designs continue to shift and evolve those styles that have inspired us in the past, like the Hamptons, contemporary, Scandinavian, minimalist and industrial. Across the home design industry, a handful of emerging styles are embracing eco-friendly living with warm organic components. Others focus on spirituality and wellbeing, with lightƬlled relaxation spaces and a greater sense of connectedness to exterior areas. Some fresh new looks also inject artistic musings into interior design with curves and bold new materials.

GLOBAL INFLUENCE This look is deƬned by a rich fusion of diƪerent elements. We couldn’t travel the globe, but

160

home design

we could imbue a little magic into our homes with things we love from far-Ʈung places. This look is eclectic and sophisticated. It’s all about exquisite handmade pieces of furniture and decor from exotic destinations. There’s a tribal aesthetic and Arabian inƮuence with tastes of Morocco. Fine detailing, natural materials and layering help to deƬne the look. It includes things like exquisite handmade artifacts, woven baskets and textured rugs.

SCANDI STYLE Beautiful pared-back luxury and aƯnity with nature give Scandi its very broad appeal. The furniture pieces speak for themselves with minimal ornamentation. Janine Sorensen from Danish Red says Scandi style is understated. “It has an almost humble approach and it is very close to nature,” she says. In traditional Scandi style, timbers are light solid oak. However, Janine says new timber products are changing things. “Smoked oak is fumed and converted in a very natural manner,

which provides another option if you prefer darker tones of timber,” she says. There is also more use of linoleum, which is linseed oil-based, so it’s a naturally derived product that is often crafted into desk tops and coƪee table tops. “We are deƬnitely seeing more of that in various muted colours, mossy greens and mauves,” says Janine.

MID-CENTURY MODERN MAKEOVER This style is classic and timeless. It was born in the 1940s, continuing right up to the ‘60s. Mid-century modern is characterised by clean lines, thin legs on tables and chairs, and at times splashes of bright colour. It’s an iconic look that your parents and grandparents probably grew up with, but now we are seeing mid-century pieces of furniture with contemporary interiors.

ARTY INTERIORS In modern homes, the line between what’s an interior space and what is art is often blurred. According to Mardi Mason, from Mardi Mason

Interiors, adding form to function can open up a world of possibilities. “People are not afraid to make bold choices at the moment,” she says. A kitchen is now a piece of art itself rather than just being functional. “In kitchens there’s a shift away from white kitchens. We are seeing island benches that have beautiful curves on the end and contours and mouldings underneath,” she says. As well as oversized artworks adorning walls, there are bespoke designer light Ƭttings that take centre stage, Ƭreplaces that are works of art, powder rooms with lashings of luxury and patterned wallpaper, and murals that tell a story.

HAMPTONS WITH FRENCH PROVINCIAL Cool, classic and with plenty of sophistication, modern-day Hamptons is a popular look. Ciara Tapia from CTD Interior Architecture says the original Hamptons style was farmhouse that transformed into beach-side living. “It’s relaxed yet elegant coastal living with lofty ceilings and expansive open-Ʈoor plans to allow for natural light and airy interiors,” she says. “Think eggshell-white walls, white-washed timber with luxury chandeliers and plush buttoned upholstery as Ƭnishes, with touches of natural elements and colours that draw inspiration and reƮect the surroundings.

“Where Hamptons design is often simple and focused on comfort, French Provincial oƪers subtle ornate details that add intrigue,” says Ciara. “You’ll Ƭnd that a French Provincial design aesthetic features a more relaxed, almost ‘shabby chic’ form of French-style living — think gorgeously intricate Baroque furniture pieces paired with warm distressed-timber accents.”

HAMPTONS WITH A COASTAL VIBE ozdesignfurniture.com.au

Image courtesy of Original Style. originalstyle.com

Ciara says Hamptons Coastal is more relaxed than traditional Hamptons. “It is like the Hamptons Bo-Ho alternative. It is more about the feeling than the style,” she says. “It’s a relaxed theme with bright colours, soft beachy vibes, natural and raw materials, and open living spaces that support both active and leisurely lifestyles.” To accessorise a Hamptons Coastal home, Ciara says it’s all about organics and nautical tones — “the introduction of more natural textures like rope, shell and rattan; the beauty of reclaimed timber, and a simple colour palette of sea and sand hues”, she says.

WELLNESS MOVEMENT

Image courtesy of Danish Red. danishred.com.au

With people spending more time in the comfort of their own houses, there is more focus on creating dedicated spaces to unwind at home. Mardi says homeowners are seeking solace in their residences. “They’re making places at home for meditation and yoga, spaces they can relax in,” she says. To create a calm wellness space, the key is to incorporate organic materials and a neutral colour palette with a few warm tones, large windows that catch the light, earthy timber and lots of greenery. If you don’t have the room, even a nook in the corner of the

bedroom or a window seat where you can connect visually to the outdoors can be uplifting. Mardi says there’s also a huge inƮux of people wanting saunas Ƭtted at home. “It’s a bit of a buzz thing at the moment; both infrared and traditional saunas are very much in demand,” she says. The indoor-outdoor connection, with generous entertaining spaces, plush outdoor sofas and entertaining spaces, is becoming more important to homeowners. Having spaces to connect with others outdoors, to share and to socialise, is essential for many.

ECO-CHIC This is a fresh new look that stems from the wellness movement. When played out in interiors it’s a little rustic, but with plenty of feel-good elements. There are indoor plants in pretty planters bringing life into a space, and big luxurious bathtubs that invite you to soak away the stresses of the day. Mardi says this kind of look is characterised by organic textures, not synthetic ones, and beautiful Ƭnishes. “We are also seeing more recycled and repurposed materials being incorporated in modern home design, which we haven’t really seen before,” she shares.

164

home design

CLASSIC MEETS CONTEMPORARY There are purists who might argue a traditional or classical home should remain just that. But other designers and architects like Marie Bagnato from Bagnato Architects say injecting a little up-to-date Ʈair can give traditional style a lift. “If you have a heritage home, for example, you can refresh it while still giving a Ƭrm nod to the timeless character of the house,” she says. An example is updating the kitchen with new cabinetry. “Flush-panel doors and cupboards that don’t have rebates and detail in them provide more contemporary, cleaner lines,” says Marie. Introducing furniture pieces like a contemporary armchair or a nontraditional rug or light Ƭxture is another way to instantly modernise a traditional look while still keeping its beautiful form and character.

MINIMALIST WITH A TWIST Minimalist is an architectural interior laid bare. It’s an unpretentious narrative that is all about simplicity and clean lines. Making a statement with your minimalist interior, says Mardi, is to let the architecture speak

as it uses design details to make a statement. “We are seeing beautiful, large curved windows that let lots of light stream in; they’re the focal point of the space rather than artwork.” A sweeping curved staircase or striking internal stone feature wall are other ways to add warmth to minimalist style. There is also a subtle shift away from the deƬnitive minimalist look towards adding more personalised elements to a space. “People are choosing things they want and love in their home as we are spending more time there,” she says. “But they are being discerning, paring it back.”

INDUSTRIAL WITH A SPLASH OF RETRO Industrial is all about large, lofty spaces and earthy choices, plus expanses of concrete Ʈooring and raw timber, bricks and exposed pipes. It also embraces recycled and repurposed materials. Metals are a strong element in industrial style too, as are neutral colour palettes. White, grey and black proliferate. Industrial is clean lines and it’s clutter-free, but now we are seeing a few more select retro elements. Classic oversized artwork, rustic and repurposed shelving and a vintage record player, for example, all add another layer of interest. HD

SHAKER MEETS AUSTRALIANA Pull up a stool and make yourself at home inside this immaculate kitchen

T

he homeowners had just purchased a 25-year-old Australiana cottage in Perth and were looking for a new traditional-style kitchen. They requested light Ƭnishes that would blend with the look of their home and furniture. With all walls approved for demolition, Maggie and the team looked at concepts for the new kitchen. First, the breakfast bar was removed to open up the space. The large island was centred to the cooker, housing a wine fridge, a prep sink and space for four stools. The fridge had no chilled water, so a Zip tap providing hot, cold and sparkling water was installed. A Shaker-style Ƭreclay sink was centred under the new window and two dishwashers were placed side by side. The bench was then

extended beyond the kitchen wall. An angled window seat was built into the side of the extended cabinet, helping to Ƭll the space, and a traditional Ƭreplace with matching mouldings was built opposite this. A traditional curved chimney was built into the space above the cooker in a way which did not compromise bench space, and wall cabinets were placed on either side. Lights were then installed in and under cabinets to create ambience. The simple door proƬle in white, the light marble-look benchtops and the traditional cup handles on the drawers all helped create a light, bright, functional and on-trend traditional kitchen that complemented the style of the home and furniture. abinet handles and knobs can make or break a design. With so many important decisions involved in a kitchen renovation, there’s a good chance you’ll be “decision-fatigued” by the time you get around to choosing handles. In this feature, we’ve pulled together some popular and practical options as selected by some of KBDi’s award-winning members. 01 Handle-free cabinetry is a popular option. Push-to-open models, bevelled-edge panels and Ƭnger-pull features allow a streamlined, clutter-free aesthetic. Melbourne’s Alicia Jeƪries (Mint Kitchen Group) used a handle-free drawer style in this warm and welcoming space.

Sydney’s Eliesha Paiano (Paiano Design) added a touch of glamour with these brass Ƭttings. 04 Interesting materials like oak and leather can add an au naturale appeal to kitchens and bathrooms. We love the look achieved in this spectacular space by Melbourne’s Kia Howat (GIA Bathrooms & Kitchens). 05 The delicate little knobs in this award-winning kitchen by Adelaide’s Nathan Wundersitz (SpaceCraft Joinery) are on point. renovation that saw walls and windows removed, all-new cabinetry installed and a neo-Georgian style invoked has truly resulted in a kitchen that will linger in your mind. As you step inside this space from Degabriele Kitchens, your eyes will feast on a room rich in delight. One feature is the well-laid-out scullery that includes a Zip tap and microwave. HEAT IT UP

Discover the next generation of high-performance outdoor heating and enjoy year-round comfort

A

s temperatures drop, it might be tempting to retreat indoors — but you really don’t have to leave that beautiful outdoor room space you’ve so lovingly created just because it’s winter. After all the hard work you’ve done to create the ultimate entertaining space, it would be a shame to desert it for a portion of the year. Bring inside comfort outside with the HEATSTRIP range of outdoor gas and electric heaters, proudly designed and engineered in Australia. In a market Ƭlled with unsightly and bulky outdoor heaters, it’s refreshing to see a company so passionately providing

178

innovative, stylish and energy-eƯcient outdoor heating solutions. From freestanding to wall mounted, there is a HEATSTRIP for every application. The new HEATSTRIP Elegance with Remote and App (THER-A) is an elegant heating solution for your undercover, protected alfresco area, balcony, patio and verandah. It’s also suitable for indoor uses such as garages, sheds and bathrooms. Easy temperature and automatic timer control is available via a remote control or smartphone application. The THER-A app is compatible with iPhone, Android, Alexa and Google Hub.

HEATSTRIP Classic is a stylish electric radiant heater that provides even and comfortable heat. With a unique slimline shape and black facade, the unit blends elegantly into any decor and, thanks to its cutting-edge technology, it can eƪectively heat any undercover alfresco dining or barbecue area, patio, verandah, courtyard or balcony. One of the most energy-eƯcient heaters available in Australia, HEATSTRIP Max Classic’s running costs start from just 30 cents per hour, a fraction of the cost compared to gas-bottled patio heaters. HEATSTRIP Max is suitable for diƯcult-toheat exposed outdoor sites and alfresco

areas with high ceilings, such as pergolas and balconies, as well as indoor spaces, such as garages. Using unique low-glow heating technology, the heating element provides a mild and unobtrusive glow as energy is directed towards producing heat rather than unwanted light. The dual-element design allows for a very compact unit while maintaining maximum eƯciency. Using the latest material coating and heating element technology, ThermoƬlm, a world leader in electric heaters, recently introduced the Ƭrst oƪ-white outdoor heater. The new HEATSTRIP Elegance series blends seamlessly with most

white ceilings (be they atop a patio, verandah or outdoor room) and is available in three diƪerent sizes: 1800W, 2400W and 3600W. The shorter and more compact design, which means less surface area compared to other products on the market, will transform any area into a stylish, vibrant and sophisticated space, providing more eƪective heating and a comfortable outdoor living experience. Designed and engineered in Australia, the HEATSTRIP range is built from corrosionresistant alloy and is suitable for use in most applications, including harsh environments such as coastal areas, outdoor kitchens and

around saltwater swimming pools. You can also rest assured knowing that all HEATSTRIP heaters come with a two-year full-replacement warranty for residential applications. With several mounting options available, the HEATSTRIP range can be tailored to your individual space. The standard bracket will allow both ceiling and wall mounting at various angles as well as suspension by chains, wires and metal rods for use with higher ceilings. In addition to trade outlets, HEATSTRIP heaters are available nationally at Bunnings as well as at specialty outdoor living, electrical and heating stores. HD heatstrip.com.au

chance meeting in Sitges, south-west of Barcelona in Spain, during the 1970s was the beginning of a lifelong partnership for Mac and Mardee McDonough. Two of Australia’s fashion leaders, the pair specialise in high-quality leather and textile fashion goods and apparel through their boutique label Estilo Emporio, based in Sydney. Acknowledged by their friends as fashion virtuosos as well as passionate foodies, their home is a special place where they entertain with as much style and pizazz as they put into their very own label. Located in the leafy sandstone suburb of Hunters Hill, Sydney, “Casa McDonough” is situated at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac. Built in the 1950s, the home’s interior is Ƭlled with treasures collected from around the world, creating an intimate atmosphere with particular reference to Mediterranean and South American inƮuences. Purchased by the couple in the 1980s and extensively renovated, the home’s kitchen is a place where food is prepared and shared with

love. Moving outside through wide French doors, more exciting culinary opportunities await in a recently upgraded space created to indulge your tastebuds. Known for their amazing food, including the Spanish classic paella, Mac and Mardee cook wood-Ƭred pizza in their own pizza oven imported from Italy, which is clad with Spanish hand-painted and glazed decorative marble tiles that evoke a Mediterranean ambience. Alongside the pizza oven is a paella cooker and, of course, a barbecue, allowing for the preparation of a varied menu, depending on the occasion. Everything in this space was selected for its beauty and to enhance the outdoor living and dining experience. Marble pavers feature throughout, reƮecting the Carrara marble dining tabletop, which sits on a forged-iron base. Forged-iron chairs are Ƭtted with thick cushions to ensure dining is comfortable and never rushed. To protect guests from the sun, a shade sail provides ample cover, and when the going gets hot, the nearby swimming pool provides instant relief.

The garden is dotted with colourful exotic plants and natives including wisteria and bougainvillea. Fruit trees and herbs grow in the well-supplied kitchen garden and one wall is covered with a native hedge to provide privacy from adjoining properties. Colourful tableware from Mexico, napery from Paris and fresh Ʈowers from the early-morning markets reƮect the natural landscape and set the scene for the feasts to come. Guests are encouraged to create their own pizza toppings, which they can construct from the array of fresh, delicious ingredients provided, including caramelised eschalots, macadamia pesto and slow-oven-dried tomatoes. They are then invited to share their various creations with each other, along with the delicious wines chosen by the hosts to complement the fare. This beautiful outdoor area is used throughout the year for family dining and entertaining. Even in winter, with the addition of Ƭrepits and braziers — and perhaps a rug or two — guests can be certain of a warm welcome in this unique and comfortable backyard. HD
