101 Years of

KITCHEN INNOVATION Fueled by culinary curiosity and our burning need for both easy solutions and good aesthetics, kitchen design has come a long way since Elkay® started in 1920.

1928

1954

Elkay releases its dual-bowl sink dubbed the Hitchcock, a top-of-the-line washbasin made by hand in either German nickel and silver (for $700) or copper (for $900).

The first nonstick cookware came from France, when engineer Marc Grégoire tried adding Teflon to the skillet his wife used for eggs. T-fal pans are born.

1948 1937

1946

Inspired by the frothy drinks being whirred up for diner customers (egg creams, anyone?) in the ’20s, Fred Waring launches the aptly named Miracle Mixer so home cooks can make them too.

Tupperware, is introduced, and becomes a household name thanks to saleswoman Brownie Wise’s famous Tupperware parties.

House Beautiful names a lot of plastic decor— Flexichrome flooring, curtains made from Koroseal film, etc.—to a list of kitchen must-haves.

1967

1950s At a time when happy hour was more popular than ever, Elkay made it even more fabulous with its Cocktail Center, a blending, mixing, and washing station with a built-in sink. Frank Sinatra would definitely approve.

The promise of a nearly instant hot dinner? So high was the demand in 1960s America that when Iowa-based upstart Amana released its 110-volt countertop microwave, which cost $495 (some $4,000 today), it still sold like hotcakes.

1971 Chlorine, sediment, and unexpected scents are terrible houseguests—especially when they show up unannounced in your drinking water. Elkay came to the rescue with the “quick change” under-sink water purifier. The tagline? “Enjoy bottled-water quality.” No stockpile of Evian necessary.

1984 And to think that working from home this year felt novel. In our July 1984 issue, HB unveiled a kitchen with what was considered a very high-tech island, complete with a (then sleek, now clunky) blue screen computer and TV tucked right into the blond wood. How about a few rounds of Tetris or an episode of Murder, She Wrote during dinner prep? It was definitely the precursor to teenagers on their iPhones.

HITCHCOCK, ELKAY. WATER FILTER, ELKAY. TOUCHSCREEN, GETTY IMAGES. RED SINK, ELKAY. BREADMAKER, GETTY IMAGES. MICROWAVE, GETTY IMAGES. COCKTAIL CENTER, ELKAY. TUPPERWARE, GETTY IMAGES.

2005 Megawatt chefs popularlize sous vide (French for “under vacuum”) cooking: immersion circulated water baths originally devised for science labs.

1986 In 1894, Boston restaurateur Joseph Lee—who grew up enslaved in South Carolina—invented and patented a breadmaker that kneaded dough. Nearly a century later, Matsushita Electric unveils a model that bakes it.

2021BEYOND Everyone from your great-granny to Jane Jetson would be gobsmacked by the technological wizardry available in kitchens these days. Voice-controlled ovens that send live-streamed video of your dinner to your phone? Fridges that alert you when you’re out of your pulp-free organic OJ? Call it the future perfect.

2016 Who says a sink has to be stainless steel or porcelain? Elkay’s quartz color sinks quickly become beloved by adventurous designers for their showstopping hues, including Maraschino , Bisque, and Mocha.

Everyone is mad about organizing right now. Editorial Director Joanna Saltz chats with four designers about finding solutions that actually improve your quality of life (and your mood).

Joanna Saltz @josaltz WANT TO TALK? E-MAIL ME AT EDITOR@HOUSEBEAUTIFUL.COM.

Byron Risdon @byronrisdon

Joanna Saltz: I have a theory that in times of chaos, people crave neatness, and that’s why we’ve gotten so into organizing lately. Have you noticed that? IN A KITCHEN BY BYRON RISDON, A COMBINATION OF SHELVES, CABINETS, AND WINE STORAGE ENSURES EVERYTHING HAS A PLACE.

Dee Murphy: Definitely. With more people at home over the past year, we all want to find a place for everything or else it

Custom Organizing Solutions for Every Room There’s no one-size-fits-all rule for good organizing; here are valuable tips for different parts of the home.

just keeps adding to the chaos. So whether it’s organizing drawers and doing the Marie Kondo edit or structuring spaces with custom storage, it’s about making it not feel like an absolute mess. For me, with my kids at home and desks in the dining room, we really needed to just rein it in. Purvi Padia: When kids aren’t out of the house as much, your home is also where they’re playing, learning, doing everything, and so there’s a lot more stuff.

perspective, people are using that space more than ever and realizing they need new equipment and tools. So that means organizing all that efficiently for cooking. Jo: Beyond the kitchen, where else are people organizing? Purvi: Well, rooms are being used multifunctionally now.

Jean Stoffer: From a kitchen

Jean Stoffer @jeanstofferdesign

MUDROOM: “Especially in climates that require a lot of outerwear, you need great storage for snowy boots, as well as hats, mittens, and any other gear—we even see people keeping grill equipment in mudrooms. A combination of open cubbies and closed storage, as in this mudroom I designed with California Closets, makes space for all the stuff.” —JEAN STOFFER

People want the living room to be an office during the day and a living room at night, but they don’t want to spend hours transforming it from one to the other. Byron Risdon: The same goes for the home office. People are thinking, How can I keep my guest room but also use it as my office? And have a pretty background! I’ve literally had a client ask me to work on just the shelf behind his desk! Jo: At the end of the day, people want beautiful. How do you make sure your functional storage is still gorgeous? Jean: With our cabinet line, we’ve made several interior storage solutions that aren’t inexpensive but really do improve your quality of life. People love the angled lid storage racks so they don’t just have a stack of lids in a cabinet. Byron: I’m doing more built-ins than ever. The longer people are in their home, the more they realize how much they have that needs to be stored in a nice way.

Jo: So what are the biggest trends you’re seeing in organizing right now? Dee: Closets have always been a big deal, but I feel like now more than ever, people want to up the ante and go ahead and spend that money to really get them done. I built a shoe drawer for my own mudroom and I’ve had so many clients ask for that now, because no matter what, when we tried to do baskets, stuff ended up tumbling out and looking messy; so they’re asking for drawers they can stack shoes in and then close shut. Byron: I think the idea of purging is sparking a lot of these new projects; people are cleaning

Purvi: But if you need it right now, sometimes it’s about finding the pretty off-the-rack solutions too.

A DINING ROOM BY PURVI PADIA CAN ALSO SERVE AS AN OFFICE WITH SIDEBOARD STORAGE AND ARTWORK AS A ZOOM BACKGROUND.

and they realize, I should go ahead and work on this closet, or redo this pantry. Jean: Besides the mudroom, we’ve really seen an increase in the back, or secondary, kitchen. Purvi: With my clients, I’ve seen the shift in pantries. People have always wanted them to be functional, but in the past year it’s been more about beautiful pantries with everything in glass jars with labels on them. Jo: It’s almost like merchandis-

ing. I do think the connecting point is that it’s about making your family’s life more livable— whether it’s getting dressed in the morning or getting food out of your pantry, it’s a kind of self-care. Byron: Having an organized space, knowing where things are, and being able to access them—just making that easier for yourself really does impact your quality of life.

Dee Murphy @murphydeesign

GUEST ROOM: “Make use of every nook and cranny! This little jewel box in my guest bunk room needed to work as extra storage for me (compartments and a clothing rack) and as a place to both store items and provide a ‘drop zone’ for guests (drawers and vanity). I worked with California Closets to carve out every last inch of space and give each piece a place in this ‘not so walk-in’ closet.” —DEE MURPHY

LIVING ROOM:

“To create a room that can function in multiple ways, look for pieces that can easily transition—say, a coffee table that has a hidden spot underneath for schoolbooks.” —PURVI PADIA

Custom Storage This open loft space called for an exposed home bar instead of an entirely separate room, so designer Jae Joo added a bespoke corner unit to function as both a mixing station and a buffet for dinner parties.

Converted Closet For this Palm Beach living room, designer John Fondas turned a shallow closet into an out-of-the-way bar nook by removing the doors and building in cabinets. Tortoise wallpaper by Schumacher gives it a Caribbean feel.

Plumbed Wet Bar The prep sink and undercounter refrigerator drawers in this bar by designer Vani Sayeed allow for seamless serving and quick cleanup. Pull-out trays built into the cabinetry extend counter space in an instant.

What’s Your Dream

HAPPY HOUR?

The best time for a pick-me-up is whenever the craving strikes. With Signature Kitchen Suite’s new fridge-to-freezer drawers, the first of their kind, you’ll always have a refreshing snack on hand. 1:00 PM: Teatime 8:00 PM: Sweet Treats

Skip the packaged sweets and make your own ice cream sandwiches by pressing a big, cold scoop between two fresh-from-the-pantry cookies. (Then eat immediately, before it melts!)

Cucumbers and spreadable cream cheese. Thinly sliced cold roast beef with grainy mustard. Readyto-serve fillings at just the right temperature make sandwich prep a cinch. Trim the crusts off, pile them on a cake stand, and pour tea. No toaster necessary.

Each drawer can be set to fridge or freezer temps as needed.

4:00 PM: Aperitifs

For a true happy hour situation, start by getting yourself a drink. Chilled Champagne in a frosty coupe? Don’t mind if you do. Peel a few shrimp ahead of time and they’ll be ready for you to reach in and snatch, turning your countertop into a bar and restaurant in record time.

DON’T SETTLE FOR JUST ONE! The two compartments in Signature Kitchen Suite’s Convertible Drawer Refrigerator/Freezer can be set independently to any temperature between -7ºF and 50ºF. So while one drawer keeps ice cream frozen just right, the other will keep cookies fresh longer. (Set them to whatever two temps your happy hour components require!) Ready for a change? Each drawer can recalibrate to a new temperature in under two hours. 22

Leigh McGregor of Kelsey Leigh Design Co. calls her latest project, an English-inspired home nestled in the woodsy neighborhood of Cottage Grove in Edmond, Oklahoma. Built as a spec house by her husband, Scott McGregor, of McGregor Homes, the house is situated on a sloping lot adjacent to a densely wooded area. As a result, the first floor sits above the tree line. It was for this reason that the couple decided to place the kitchen at the very back of the house. “I just thought it would bring so much peace and tranquility to be able to look at the trees while standing at your sink,” Kelsey says.

“It would be a moment in your day.” To maximize the relatively small space, Kelsey designed clever efficiencies: tall cabinetry with a hidden appliance garage to keep clutter tucked away, a concealed microwave built into the island, and glass dishware displays to alleviate visual bulk. Dark blue cabinetry distinguishes it in the open floor plan. “It’s tiny,” admits the designer, “but it doesn’t feel tiny.”

To balance out the considerable natural light that pours in through the home’s large windows, Kelsey opted for an allover inky blue. “We aimed to make it feel as mighty and as warm as we could,” she says. Paint: After Midnight, Kelly-Moore Paints.

A window-like mirror was added in the adjacent dining area to reflect and bounce around the natural light. Light fixtures: Circa Lighting. Sconce: Troy Lighting. Chairs: Pottery Barn. Bench: custom, in ecru duck cloth. Table: vintage.

living in a country house in the middle of England.” Emphasis on feel. Michelle L. Morby—painter, photographer, PBS enthusiast—was actually plotting a rebirth of the tiny kitchen in her house in San Francisco. An enclosed sunroom off the back was ripped out to make space (the former kitchen, one room away, was converted to a hidden powder room to make good on the plumbing). Designer Lynn Kloythanomsup of Landed Interiors & Homes sourced countless period-perfect details to make the fantasy a reality. And the house cooperated. “It’s an Arts and Crafts house from 1914,” Kloythanomsup explains. “It is already kind of a casual language, so it was just about how to make it more country.” A

Paned Windows “Originally I was like, ‘Oh, let’s go for black,’ ” Morby recalls. “And Lynn was like, ‘If we do blue, it’s going to warm it up!’ And the color is perfect.” Windows: Pella, in Railings, Farrow & Ball. Fittings and apron sink: Waterworks.

potpourri of materials invoke the “ramshackle” vibe requested by Morby but still feel classy and lasting: painted wood floors, inset cabinetry, exposed brick, nickel fixtures, and Calacatta marble that ends in an elegant offset Dupont edge. An antique Swedish butcher block on casters was rolled in for use exactly as its maker intended. While not huge, the kitchen is meant to be perpetually teeming with food—and guests. “She’s having friends over and cooking all the time,” says Kloythanomsup. “She loves having an artist’s salon.”

Brick Veneer For the walls the designer chose a classic red brick, but since it was just for looks, went faux. “It’s like a thin brick tile,” she explains.

Smart Drawers “I was like, Why do I have to have those stupid separators in the drawer?,” Morby says. “I hate those things.” So Kloythanomsup used restaurant-style cans for easy access to each utensil. Cabinetry: custom, Landed Interiors & Homes, fabricated by California Interior. 36

Versatility and Style in the Kitchen A chic breakfast nook that works for the whole family This contemporary new-build in Hinsdale, Illinois — a charming Chicago suburb with small town roots, a walkable downtown and a brand new Circa Lighting showroom opening soon — was designed with family in mind. “When you can envision how a family might operate in the space, you’ll be able to build a better home,” says Julie Laux, owner of the Hinsdale-based construction and design firm, J. Jordan Homes, who incorporated stylish multipurpose family spaces like this sophisticated breakfast nook (pictured right) into the home’s design. With grown-up appeal and kid-friendly functionality, the clean-lined breakfast nook gets a dose of glam from Kelly Wearstler’s show-stopping Strada Oval Chandelier.

Photo Credit: Cynthia Lynn Photography BUILDER’S HIGHLIGHTS Julie and her team at J. Jordan Homes pulled double duty on this modern Hinsdale home, running point on both construction and design. Here, she shares her tips and tricks for nailing multipurpose family spaces like this elegant breakfast nook. 1 CONSIDER FUNCTION

“It’s definitely not the traditional choice for a kitchen eating area,” Laux says. “But don’t be afraid to stretch. Lighting is a fun way to take a risk and keep it fresh.” Looking to perfectly light your next project? The lighting design team at Circa Lighting makes it easy. Get in touch by calling 877.762.2323 to learn more about what they can do for you.

Clever use of space is especially important, but so is thinking through the different ways your clients might use the particular area. From casual family meals to homework, it should all influence the design. 2 DON’T OVERTHINK IT When you overthink a space, you tend to make safe decisions, which often translates to boring or staid interiors. Don’t be afraid to take design risks, especially with lighting. 3 CHOOSE HIGH QUALITY FIXTURES When you cut corners with lighting, it tends to show. What’s great about Circa Lighting is that they are the go-to resource for designer lighting. The designers they carry have a range of perspectives and styles and the products are always high quality.

something to look like it’s always been there,” says Philip Mitchell of the brand-new kitchen he designed for a Nova Scotia home. Mitchell set about “creating immediate history” by adding traditional elements with old-world craftsmanship: The floors are reclaimed antique wood, while cabinets were completely hand-built and painted. “We wanted everything to read as being touched by hand,” says the designer. Despite the specific style directive, the kitchen is meant to be used. A showstopping brass pot rack provides easy access to well-loved pans; surfaces are ultradurable; and “every drawer is divided to hold something specific, whether it’s utensils or spices,” Mitchell says. Even the counter stools, he points out, “are soft and pretty, but practical” with their distressed finish. “It’s not a pretend kitchen,” the designer explains. “ ‘If something gets

nicked or chipped or scratched,’ the clients said, ‘we don’t care.’ ”

A secondary kitchen with wall ovens and a china pantry, meanwhile, kick into use during parties. “They love their AGA,” says Mitchell, referring to the iconic castiron range that gives the main kitchen its exceedingly English look, “but sometimes you have to cook a turkey!”

Servery Behind the main kitchen, this secondary cook space offers larger ovens, a bonus cooktop, and even a dishwasher (one of four!) hidden to the left of the sink. Ovens and cooktop: Wolf. Sink: Waterworks. Shade: Cowtan & Tout Taj fabric, with Samuel & Sons trim. 48

Nicole White found when she made a house call to a desperate client in Davie, Florida, complaining of a kitchen layout that “made no sense” for her and her husband, who loves to cook. “There was a pass-through from the kitchen to the TV room. Then there was a fridge on a wall that stopped 24-inches short of the ceiling,” White recalls. “It was just weird!” The solution came to her immediately: Lose the half wall so the wife could hang out with her husband while he cooked. Then replace ceramic tile floors with porcelain tile—made to look like chevron wood planks—from Floor & Decor. (The pool is steps away, so real wood wasn’t a practical option.) Opposite the TV room, a new appliance center now houses the fridge, a coffee cabinet, and a gleaming black-and-brass ILVE stove. “I said, ‘Listen. You’re a cook. Why don’t we make the range the star?’ ” White recalls. “He said, ‘Great. This is the one I love. You guys choose the color.’ ” Black and white cabinets, gray tile, and Lucite hardware contribute to a scheme that feels both modern and inviting. “I like to balance things,” White explains. “I always say there can’t be too many stars in the show.”

WATER AND ICE DISPENSERS EXTERNAL The most convenient option, a dispenser on the outside of a fridge, eliminates the need to open the door for an ice-filled glass of water. But the mechanisms for these can take up a good amount of space, so check inside before buying to be sure there’s enough room for your groceries.

Freshness Guaranteed

More Space

The lower right quadrant of Dacor’s new model is a FlexZone with five temperature settings. And above, a “door-in-door” compartment houses a built-in jug that autofills with water, while the freezer below makes two types of ice.

New-to-the-U.S. appliance brand Beko is introducing its latest preservation technology: EverFresh with Active Fresh Blue Light, which promises to keep fruits and vegetables fresh for 30 days.

With a capacity of 27 cubic feet, this side-by-side LG fridge and freezer combo can hold a lot of groceries. The Instaview panel at right lights up with a knock, showing you what you need to restock without letting out all the cold air.

Side-by-Side InstaView Refrigerator with Craft Ice, from $1,999. lg.com/us.

How to Make It Look Built-in Purchasing the correct model is critical! Typically under 30-inches deep, counter-depth refrigerators are designed to, you guessed it, match the depth of your countertop for a seamless look. (Measure twice, buy once, to be sure it actually does!) Newer models can be customized: The 4-Door BESPOKE Flex Zone Refrigerator from Samsung has eight glass panel fronts that can be changed to go with your decor.

62

HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

INTERNAL Prized largely for aesthetics, water filters hidden inside the fridge also take up less space than external ones. Some require holding a button and a glass to start the flow, while others work with a more simplified push lever. Note: If you go this route, you’ll be scooping your ice from the freezer. FREESTANDING If you really love ice, make room for an additional countertop or built-in ice maker, like the one from Ice-O-Matic that can make up to 22 pounds of nugget ice a day. (No room? The Bosch QuickIcePro System, available on its 500 series refrigerators and up, makes up to 12 pounds or 40 glasses worth of ice per day!)

EXTRA BURNERS A 48" range can have up to eight gas burners, but most people opt for four burners in combo with other cooktop features.

Choosing a Good Hood Options range from fully integrated (off the shelf, designed to be attractive) to inserts like the ones from Zephyr that designers can customize. Most important? Good ventilation! Your hood needs to move smoke and odor from indoors to out.

This Triple Speed Oven does it all. With a speed oven, convection oven, and warming drawer, it’s an ideal accompaniment to a rangetop. $9,199. thermador.com.

IN DEFENSE OF WALL OVENS

DESIGN BY MINDY LAVEN

A Better Electric Option every manufacturer has a model for every price point. Induction cooktops are safer, faster, and offer more precise cooking than standard electric models. In order to activate the “burners,” an induction-friendly pot or pan has to be placed on it (and

these days most cookware, from nonstick to stainless steel and cast iron, is made to work on induction). Since the connection is magnetic, no excess heat escapes— versus with gas cooking—so the pan heats up quickly and distributes heat evenly.

Perception: Wall ovens are a waste of space. Reality: Installing wall ovens allows you to skip the full range and just get a cooktop, freeing up those precious lower cabinets for extra storage underneath. Plus, wall ovens are easier on your back—no more bending down to pull heavy pots and pans out of a range. Just add one, or get two of the same model, or top a single oven with a built-in coffeemaker, steam oven, speed-cook oven, or a microwave.

CRITICAL THINKING

Primed to blend in with your cabinetry. PowerSteam PanelReady Dishwasher. $1,599. signaturekitchensuite.com/us.

THREE THINGS TO CONSIDER SOUND: In an open floor plan or small home, noise carries freely from the kitchen. Look for a lowdecible dishwasher so you can actually hear your family’s conversation (or watch TV without blasting the speakers) after dinner. Newer models have a screen that tells you they’re washing, because they’re so quiet you can’t tell. CLEANING: For obvious reasons, it’s frustrating when “clean” dishes aren’t fully cleaned. Dishwashers that have full-body sprayers can reach every inch of the drum. Read the manual to see how to properly position your dishes and cookware in the racks for optimal results—and use the recommended detergent! DRYING: Manually towel drying your dishes after you take them out of the dishwasher means it’s not doing its job. Look for additional drying boosters—located on the keypad—that push out more heat to guarantee spotless dinnerware that doesn’t require an extra toweling step.

For those who aren’t in a position to compost, in-sink garbage disposals allow for a clean, fast way to remove food waste (and the inevitable food odors). Disposals work by pulverizing food scraps into small enough particles that they can go through the water waste system—rather than into a landfill. How? Once you drop your apple peels and eggshells into the disposal, turn on the faucet, and flip the switch, that food is knocked back and forth inside the grind chamber (there aren’t any sharp blades in there!). Plumbing brand Moen (left) offers four versions based on horsepower and lifestyle: The Chef (which can handle chicken bones and fruit pits), The Host, The Prep, or The Lite. This fall, all will come with a 360° Clean Rinse cycle to clean residual odors out of the internal chamber.

By alleviating the need to carry a heavy pot of water any distance through the kitchen, a pot filler quickly earns its keep (especially if you make a lot of pasta). An additional plumbing line is required if your range is on a different wall from your sink, so it’s easiest to add a pot

filler during a full kitchen renovation. Install it high enough to accommodate your tallest pot! And think creatively about where you might need one: in at-home coffee areas (no need to move the carafe!), in appliance garages, and at pet water stations.

SPARKLING Ideal for the entertainer, sparkling water systems, like a favorite from Grohe, make mixed drinks a breeze: Just add booze, ice, and citrus.

COLD FILTERED Easy-access drinking water is ideal in the kitchen, in home bars, and even in pantries. A high arc allows you to fill water bottles and pots.

Are White Kitchens Still Cool? White kitchens are eternal— and practically glow when they’re as well lit as this space, featured in HB in April 2003, by Linda Bedell. The trick to a dynamic white is to layer on textures and colors, which Bedell did by adding veined marble, a hit of warm wood, and tons of upper shelving (even the space above the window comes to life thanks to a strategically placed dinnerware collection).

ETERNAL DESIGN QUESTIONS House Beautiful’s been covering kitchens for 120+ years—but after all this time, homeowners still get hung up on the same issues. Here, we look at some of our best past projects and how they can help inform your current decisions. By Kelly Allen Photogra ph by OBERTO GILI

There’s a forgotten upside to a walledoff space: The mess is contained to one private room. But take note: Designer Kathryn Scott made this closed galley, which ran in May 2006, feel so much more airy by adding glass fronts to the upper cabinets— which allow the natural light from the window to bounce around the room.

Are Recessed Lights Required? “If you want to be bathed in even light without shadows (and have better Instagram photos of your food!), go with light fixtures versus architectural recessed lighting,” says Young Huh, who designed this mint-green kitchen featured in our November 2012 issue with pendants at various heights.

HOW DO YOU COOK: Instead of triangulating the fridge, stove, and sink, plan zones: food storage, food prep, cooking, and cleaning. Proximity is everything. “The range should be close to the sink so that you don’t ever have something in your hand and can’t wash it,” says designer Kelly Finley of Joy Street Design. Other smart adjacencies: counter space on either side of the cooktop and, near your prep area, a drawer outfitted with a knife tray as well as your spice collection (rather than putting the latter by the stove). “No one wants to put their head by a spattering pan as they bend down to look for paprika,” says Finley.

HOW DO YOU SHOP: “When you bring the food into the house,” designer Arianne Bellizaire prompts her clients, “do you have a drop zone for all of those bags? From there, where are you storing food? Do you need a walk-in pantry or a reach-in cabinet pantry?” Her goal: create a seamless transition from the initial landing zone to food storage and then on to prep stations. Oh, and make sure all your go-to groceries fit: You’ll find 2 to 3 inches of extra storage in each module by upgrading to frameless cabinetry. In a

small kitchen, that can go a long way!

WHAT’S YOUR PLEASURE: Specialty centers (coffee bars! smoothie spots! baking areas!) are getting their own space to ensure no one’s crisscrossing with the cook. Refrigerator drawers for kid-friendly drinks and snacks, for example, keep them out from underfoot. Finley even designed a marble-topped cart for a baker client that can be rolled out as needed—but tucked away when not in use. A zone can also serve as an appliance garage—cabinetry that extends down to your countertop, conveniently housing your daily-use milk frother and Vitamix while keeping them out of view.

78

HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

WHO’S PASSING THROUGH: Minimize the steps between zones and ensure uninterrupted productivity. “If there’s room for multiple cooks, I design different stations that don’t overlap so everyone has space to prep, cook, and clean,” says designer Alison Giese. But having enough space within a zone is critical, too. “It’s so important for doors to swing, cabinets to open, and counter stools to back up without blocking passageways or hitting something else in the room,”

says John McDonald, CEO and founder of the online cabinetry company BOXI by Semihandmade. No room for all this and a kitchen island? Don’t add one.

WHO’S COMING OVER: “Clients say, ‘I want to connect with my kids while they’re doing homework’ or ‘I want to talk to my spouse as I’m preparing dinner,’ ” says Bellizaire. Sometimes, designers are tasked with creating a social space within the kitchen itself; in other cases, the kitchen opens to an adjacent sitting area. Do you want to face the TV room while washing dishes or cooking? If so, the sink or range needs to be in the island. “If the client loves to entertain and be part of the action,” says Bellizaire, “where I put the prep space is going to be driven by how they like to experience the cooking.”

WHAT’S YOUR MESS LEVEL: Scrape, rinse, drop: It’s this cleanup formula that necessitates the dishwasher and a pull-out trash receptacle flank the sink. (And it’s worth repeating: “When we design kitchens with two sinks, we often add a secondary trash and dishwasher as well,” says designer Heidi Lachapelle.) There’s plenty of room for customization. “Say you have an ‘I cook, you clean’ partnership,” says Bellizaire. “If the cleaning person is right-handed, I’m putting the garbage on the left and the dishwasher on the right when they’re at the sink. I’m also putting plates, cups, and bowls near the

dishwasher so you’re not walking to get to them.”

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS How to keep essentials on hand—but out of the way.

Take Inventory Before Organizing

Prioritize Drawers Over Doors

Design With Your Stuff in Mind

Designate Space for Small Appliances

“One of the most common mistakes we see people make is rushing out to buy organizing products before taking the time to inventory the items they are trying to contain,” says Ashley Murphy, CEO and cofounder of the Neat Method. A good purge will free up some room and help you shop smarter in the future: “Make sure to go through and edit the items under your kitchen sink. We often find that clients have items stored under there that they have not used in years.”

Even if a walk-in pantry isn’t in the cards, adding more drawers than shelves in your kitchen will deliver more usable space. “If you’re going to pay for the cabinetry, use every inch of it!” says Bellizaire, who particularly loves “peg systems for bowls and plates, which we store in drawers at our house.” Finley, who hates the look of most knife blocks on the countertop, advocates for bamboo trays to store knives in drawers in the food prep zone.

Lachapelle itemizes the contents of her clients’ kitchens, then designs so that everything has a home. “We label where everything belongs in the plans— silverware, cutting boards, spices, you name it,” she says. “The first step to having a well-organized kitchen is a road map for putting things away. If there’s a place for everything, then it’s easier to keep clean.” (One musthave? “Space for a broom or vacuum, an apron, and a step stool, if you’ve got cabinetry to the ceiling!”)

If your kitchen has room, home organizer Shira Gill recommends adding an appliance closet equipped with a charging station for a toaster, blender, and the like. “That’s the importance of a designated pantry,” says Lachapelle. “We are able to create a beautiful design moment while keeping the clutter tucked away and organized in an adjacent location.” In less square footage, designer Brynn Olson encourages clients to at least house all countertop appliances behind cabinet doors for a clean look.

The Dinnerware Pantry For collectors and table-setters When your stacks of ceramics (or china and silver, if you’re fancy) outgrow one shelf, get built-ins. Here, Dallas designer Jan Showers converted a closet into a dinnerware pantry by double stacking cabinetry along each wall. (Add them on one spare wall if a closet isn’t free.) Paint the shelves a smudgeproof high gloss, then place the most-used pieces at chest level.

The Working Pantry Party hosts and big families take note With storage for bulkier food items and spare dishes, a full length of countertop for dinner party prep, and an extra sink, this secondary work space by designer Sarah Blank is the perfect complement to an open kitchen. Adding a sink converts any room from storage to flex space: Use it as a bar when guests are over, or for serving lunch to kids you don’t want traipsing through the kitchen.

The Open Pantry To maximize a small footprint By painting irregular shelves a soft white, homeowner/entrepreneur Natalie Ebel made them appear smooth and flow seamlessly into the space. Setting shelves at a shallow depth keeps all displayed drinkware and bar supplies looking tidy since there isn’t room for clutter—all the more reason to add them to any blank wall in your kitchen.

The “Dirty” Pantry Where you make the best messes Stocked with a speed oven, outlets for slow cookers and mixers, and overflow stemware, this room by interior designer and vintner Caren Rideau all but eliminates kitchen clutter. Housing specialty appliances in a room other than the main kitchen will make everything from daily lunch and dinner prep to all-out holiday cooking benders less chaotic.

Step Up Your Storage Creative ways to make the most of the pantry space you already have

1. Add Invisible Pull-out Cubbies These take up virtually zero surface area and visual real estate if they’re flush with the wall when closed, which makes them an ideal solution in an apartment where exposed shelves or additional storage pieces would create a cramped feel. These double pantry pullouts in an entryway by designer Jim Dove set the gold standard.

2. Optimize Existing Cabinets When all you have is a few cabinets to dedicate to your pantry items, organization is key. Baskets, dividers, and shelves for each type of item will make cooking and cleaning a whole lot easier. 2LG Studio took advantage of every inch in these, adding spice compartments on the interior doors and setting the shelves back slightly so they fit inside.

3. Bring In a Freestanding Shelving Unit Instead of altering this space, designer Jae Joo introduced an extra shelving unit to display dishes in the middle, wine below, and sparkling water on top. “We added as much storage as possible since this area gets the most foot traffic. Plus, we wanted to make the open loft feel family-friendly while still blending in with the style,” she says.

The Reach-in Pantry When you want to hide storage in plain sight Just because you don’t have an entire room for a new pantry doesn’t mean you can’t add storage and prep space. Here, New Jersey designer Birgitte Pearce optimized an unused wall in a lounge area with task lighting, shelves, drawers, and everything from barware to grains and spices. Pocket doors, which slide closed when the owners aren’t using the space, don’t eat into the adjacent room’s usable square footage.

a bachelor at the time, asked her to help design his massive home in Pompano Beach, Florida, his vision involved a dark, “seemingly Draculainspired mansion,” Liess recalls. For a landscaper who loves entertaining and being outdoors, it made little sense. So to translate the concept to sunny South Florida, Liess took the classical forms and beautiful old villas her cousin was attracted to and gave them an airy spin, infusing the home with natural materials to convey an indoor-outdoor feeling. Most of the six-bedroom, 10-bathroom home (by architect John Lamb, with landscaping by Adam Baker of Broward Landscape) was already in place when Liess came aboard. She helped select finishes and materials throughout, forgoing moldings and adding barrel-vaulted ceilings made of Jerusalem stone in the dining room and wine cellar. Pecky cypress, a wood native to Florida, brings warmth to the kitchen islands and beams. The en suite bathroom’s walls and the bar are crafted from custom concrete. Much of the flooring is antique limestone. “I wanted it to feel as if the outdoors were beckoning you in every room of the house,” Liess says. That’s especially

prominent in the living room, which has sliding doors that open onto a leafy grove of coconut trees. To bring depth and meaning to the large home, which is painted entirely in Snow White by Benjamin Moore, Liess filled it with endless antiques and vintage pieces that took years to amass. “We spent so many hours on FaceTime and in-person shopping at antiques places, scouring for cool one-of-a-kinds,” she says.

In the living room, a pair of old woven birdcages now act as commanding light fixtures. Antique plaster and carved stone pieces hang from the more than 30-foot-high wall in the great room. Mismatched antique Spanish chairs in the dining room help accommodate big, casual family meals. The project was truly a labor of love—one Liess did in her free time. “My cousin is like a brother to me, so I loved having the comfort level to push back and force things I might normally let go,” she says. Now, she enjoys seeing the home in action: a place for impromptu get-togethers, family reunions, and even weddings for friends.

clients gave when she began work on their 1930s Tudor in Brookline, Massachusetts (which Curtis found on Zillow and “convinced them to buy”). “That,” says the pattern-loving designer, “was music to my ears!” One hitch: The home’s original layout didn’t allow in much light, which could have caused a color-rich scheme to feel claustrophobic. “It was a very inward-looking building,” explains architect J.B. Clancy of ART Architects, who was hired to help give the home a more modern flow, “and it was cut up into tons of little spaces with no access to the outside.” Curtis 104

and Clancy came up with an unconventional solution, carving out a central stairwell above the entryway. The space acts as a sort of interior courtyard around which the rest of the rooms revolve. But the team didn’t stop there: They looked upward, too, puncturing the center of the home’s roof to create a light well (graced with custom stained-glass windows) that floods the house with sunlight from the inside out. “The rest of the rooms became more intimate spaces around this central hub,” explains Clancy. “The starting point of the design was the Citrus Garden wallpaper,” says Curtis of Josef Frank’s iconic print that

swathes both levels of the stairwell: “It was the perfect baseline for everything.” Pulling from the many hues within the pattern, Curtis outfitted the surrounding rooms in rich jewel tones and layered vintage furniture and textiles that add depth to the client’s colorful art collection. High-gloss finishes give room after room a polished look, and help in bouncing light into every corner. Curtis worked closely with Clancy and a team of artisans to perfect textural details like wood beams and wrought-iron trim, which add a necessary edge to a style Curtis refers to as “Millennial Gothic.” For all the home’s highbrow details and fine finishes, it’s still geared toward family living: “Everything is upholstered in a performance fabric,” says Curtis. On certain statement

pieces, like sofas and dining chairs, she upholstered the backs in traditional textiles—“so when you walk into the space you see the gorgeous patterns”—but then covered the seats in durable options—“so you can sit on it all and don’t have to worry about spills.” In addition to the light well, the new layout features a number of useful rooms rather than an open floor plan: “The house is actually quite small, so we had to carve out a lot of different areas,” says Curtis, who considered how the family’s

needs might evolve when designating purposes. One space, in red lacquer, is presently a playroom for the family’s two young children, “but could one day turn into a dining room,” the designer points out. Now that’s planning ahead.

A BELOVED PATTERN WAS PRINTED ON VINYL FOR DURABILITY.

Too Much Pattern Is Never Enough “The trick to mixing them is to focus not just on color,” says Curtis, but on texture: “The matte of the tile makes a really great contrast against the high-gloss cabinetry,” she explains. Velvet upholstery feels at home against hand-scraped oak floors, while botanical colors and motifs on the wallpaper play off the landscaping.

based architect Jeffrey Dungan “doesn’t do renovations.” But when Megan Edwards, a potential new client, started calling his office about her and her husband Eric’s 1950s ranch-style house in Kansas City, Kansas, the founder and principal of Jeffrey Dungan Architects found himself too charmed to say no. “She was bouncing around like a child, she was so excited!” he recalls. “What I saw was an opportunity to keep the footprint modest, but give the house some power that it lacked. So it was more like espresso than coffee,” explains Dungan. “I hoped we could create a place that had a cozy and approachable nature but details and materials that make you stop and pay attention.” Megan, an interior designer herself, collaborated with Dungan and his interiors director Michelle Cone on the overhaul. They stripped back walls and siding, busting through eight-foot ceilings to vault the rooms and create partitions that better served the family. Indigenous materials like lime and oak were brought in for surfaces and treated so they’d feel bright and harmonious. Onto this canvas went pieces from the client’s collection: European oil paintings, antique sculptures, and the like. “Everything mattered and had been collected over a lifetime,” Dungan says. “In today’s world of instant everything, that is quite a difference maker.” Dungan was on his way to kick off the renovation when he got terrible news from Eric: Megan had cancer. The architect said to his team, “She’s going to need something to live for.” They threw themselves into the project with near-complete autonomy, as the family was tied up with her treatments, and finished it in time for Megan to spend nearly a year delighting in her new home. “She passed away in the house, surrounded by her children and the people who loved her,” Dungan says. “So in a way, we made her a final resting place.”

It had to be large, as on any given night the couple is hosting a dozen entertainment-industry guests and friends. So Tomlin’s team focused on infusing the place with coziness at every turn. “There’s not a lot of unused open space,” she says. “Every wall has a chair or

An aged-brick backsplash evokes a rustic hearth in the kitchen, and the palette is a soothing mix of muted taupes, grays, and greens. The undercurrent, however, is whimsical: “We funked it up a bit,” says Tomlin. Florals and plaids pair in a guest bedroom, while Thomas’s cowboy hats stand in as art over a banquette. While the house looks astoundingly grown-up considering its owners are still a young family, nothing is precious: “There are already stains on the carpets, markers on the walls, fingernail polish spilled on the wood floors,” says Lauren, “but it is a real and happy home. front of the Doge’s Palace in Venice one evening in August 2018, not a tourist in sight: “I just quickly pulled my camera out and got the shot.” Printed on a nine-foot-wide canvas, the gleaming white arches of the facade now grace a wall of the first New York City apartment he’s owned. “It was so large, the gallery framer had to print the canvas, then build it on-site,” says interior designer Nannette Brown, who had the idea to use one of Mu’s many architectural photographs, which have garnered him 30,000+ Instagram followers @kevinmu, as the anchor artwork in his new place. Located on the parlor floor of a Victorian townhouse, the apartment as purchased had grand proportions, two working fireplaces, and enviably intact moldings. Mu, a lawyer by day and a classicist at heart, wanted to lean into the old-timey details while adding an edge. “He imagined this moodier, dark space, which in and of itself is bold,” says 128

Brown, who mixed textures and added metallic finishes to keep the home from feeling cave-like. “In New York, we all chase the light, right?”

In the living area—modeled after grand European drawing rooms—Brown pulled velvets to cover the sofa and armchairs, while bronzed cocktail tables provide a touch of levity. The kitchen, clad entirely in black Waterworks tile by the previous owner, needed only new floors and an eat-in banquette. Mu’s bedroom alone strays from the apartment’s otherwise dark palette: The space is painted in a custom oyster-colored plaster that’s punched up with black accents and sweeping curtains. Since it’s directly off the living room, Brown explains, when the doors between the two are open, it provides a bit of secondhand brightness. Which is exactly why, though Mu had at first wanted his shot of Versailles above the banquette, the designer insisted on the portrait of the Doge’s Palace: “Especially with all those dark, sort of clay-colored grayish walls, we needed to choose something that would refract the light.”

BIG HOUSES RARELY FEEL INTIMATE… BUT THAT’S EXACTLY HOW LAUREN BUXBAUM GORDON,

partner at Chicago-based Nate Berkus Associates, describes this Edina, Minnesota, new build she designed for a young family (plus two dogs). “When we visited for the install, they had notebooks sitting on the table so the kids could share how their day went,” she says. “You really feel the sense of togetherness in this home.”

Located on about two and a half acres facing Mirror Lake, the 12,000-square-foot property is a showcase of sustainable materials. In the kitchen, Buxbaum Gordon incorporated rift-sawed natural white oak flooring along with locally sourced, low-maintenance quartz countertops by Minnesota-based Cambria. “It’s all eco-friendly,” she explains. “I was super excited to use reclaimed beams from an old barn that had fallen down [for ceiling beams]... Shopping local was important to us.” The daughter of two renowned antiques dealers, 134

Buxbaum Gordon also breathed new life into vintage accessories and furnishings—like pairing a standout Italian crystal chandelier circa 1860 with a rustic table and eclectic black-and-white wallpaper in the dining room. With young boys, the sprawling floor plan required smart divisions. There are wide halls, cuddle-ready seating areas, and rooms for everything from crafts and music to sports and studying. “Lauren and I are both parents now with young children, and that changes you, obviously,” says the firm’s founder, Nate Berkus. “As designers, it has helped us better evolve our understanding of how a family needs to live.” A designated study for the kids, for example, includes a conversation sofa and a long bench seat under the window. “We did mohair on the bench intentionally, instead of synthetic or outdoor, as it’s the most indestructible of natural materials,” Buxbaum Gordon says. “It can take a lot of wear and tear.” One of the countertops in the kitchen is a few inches lower than the other, she adds, “so the client doesn’t have to stand on her tiptoes when baking.” Six months after the project stalled during COVID, Buxbaum Gordon and her team were finally able to visit in person. Storage baskets held the kids’ musical instruments, and uplifting quotes were scribbled on clear tape adhered to the hallway subway tiles. “This really is such a special house for these kids to grow up in.”

hanging on the walls and from the ceiling.” This is Meredith McBrearty’s mantra for decorating family homes, where kids or guests might be less than carefully moving through a room at any given moment. Her Fort Worth, Texas, clients, Matt and Karen Johnson, along with their two young sons, needed just that kind of eclecticism in their new house. Consummate hosts and avid wine and art collectors, they’re also “not afraid of making bold choices” when it comes to decor, says McBrearty.

The dining room is covered in hand-painted tangerine Gracie wallpaper, and overhead in the formal living room is a sculptural Pagani Studio light fixture like the one that hung in the White House during the Obama administration, when Michael S. Smith decorated the First Family’s private residences. In every room, in fact, there are statement-making lights, positioned just so to illuminate the layered collection of textiles, upholstery, and art throughout the house. “ ‘The lighting is so cool!’ That’s everyone’s first comment when they walk in,” says McBrearty. Fun is never far from mind. Matt’s wine collection is stored in a temperature-controlled underground cave and tasting room equipped with custom built-ins that hold each bottle horizontally for easy label reading and reach. Movable hand-shaped sconces contribute style and light to the windowless space but also make anyone who enters chuckle: “Sometimes I’ll walk in and they’re flipping the bird,” McBrearty says, “or sometimes they’ll be doing the hook ’em horns”—the hand symbol popular with University of Texas students. “I love humor in a home and making it personal and not so perfect.”

From vision to installation, the project took a full four years. “My approach to design is to use what you respond to, rather than creating a perfectly matched and deliberately decorated situation,” says McBrearty. “It’s more interesting when layers evolve over time.” 142
