10 things to ask ryourself idg b or b i g

1

What do you not love about your current fridge?

longer, Bosch’s VitaFresh Pro automatically balances temperature and humidity, taking the guesswork out.

Make a list of stuff big and small that isn’t working for you—it’ll help narrow down your search by highlighting features you need. Maybe you wish that larger condiments and jugs of milk fit in the compartments on the fridge doors. Or perhaps you’re never able to find anything in your black hole of a freezer. Get your family’s input too.

6

Could your electric bill use a diet? Older

fridges can consume a lot of energy. When buying a new one, look for an Energy Star certification to ensure maximum efficiency—you could save about $200 a year. When a fridge breathes easier, it uses less energy, so it pays to clean up dust or pet hair beneath it every few months.

2

Are you always tight on space?

If so, look for a fridge with flexible shelving you can shift to fit your storage needs, like the adjustable FlexBar by Bosch. Snap a few photos of the inside of your current fridge and bring it with you when you shop to visualize your storage needs.

3

Is your freezer preference frozen in time? Switching up the location can be a game changer.

A bottom-mounted freezer makes it easier to access the fridge (which is way more commonly used) and to rummage through frozen items. Some kinds even have lift-out compartments and slide-out drawers.

7

Need more room for wine, too? Then you’ll

appreciate spacesaving, temperaturecontrolled glass beverage drawers such as the ones in the Bosch Refreshment Center, which can accommodate as many as 17 wine bottles or 35 cans.

4

8 9

5

10

Are you ready for a totally new look? Of course,

stainless steel works with almost any kitchen style and can help refresh a dated one. But consider breaking out with a trendy finish like black stainless steel—it can make your other appliances look sleeker.

Do you regularly toss spoiled fruits and veggies? Berries and

grapes wither away when they’re out of sight and people neglect to snack on them. A drawer made of glass keeps them on display (a mini lazy Susan on a fridge shelf also does the trick). To keep produce fresher

Do you often host holidays? If so, look for party-

friendly features like removable bins and shelving. You could even eliminate the need to buy ice; Bosch’s QuickIcePro System can make more than 10 pounds of it per day. Cheers!

Are fridge doors left open a thing in your family?

It happens—but it won’t again with a smart refrigerator that alerts you when a door is ajar. Bosch refrigerators with Home Connect technology will even alert you when it’s time to change the water filter, or if there are other issues.

Do your fantasies include a self-cleaning fridge? Someday, that could

be a thing. Meanwhile, go for units with features that help, like fingerprintresistant stainless steel and raised rims around the shelf edges to keep spills from overflowing.

IT’S OUR

Birth z day!

Enjoy up to 40 glasses of filtered ice, daily.* Always have plenty of ice on hand. Bosch’s patented ice system removes over 99.9% of impurities, dispensing pure, freshly filtered ice — fast. In fact, it’s the industry’s fastest refrigerator ice maker.** *Based on single ice maker production rates during a 24-hour period, measured per IEC standards, when the ice bin was removed. Boho is the name of the game as a laid-back global vibe develops. Drop in a few macramé-trimmed accents and ones in earthy tones (bonus points for tassels) for an instant passport to chic and cozy.

The spotlight’s on shapes, like suddenly everywhere curvy sofas. Furniture designs loosen up and rock more free-form and sinuous silhouettes. Even pillows ditch their corners—round ones have a moment.

10 WAYS t co o rp c 1 2

Create a basket o’ cozy. Stack throws in a woven basket within close reach of your sofa, reading nook, or bed, or drape over a sofa arm. Looks cozy, feels cozy! Get a feel-good temperature everywhere. While you want your

whole house to be just-right warm or cool, some spots are tricky. If your living room gets overly chilly or hot, consider a ductless mini-split system from Fujitsu General. Indoor units can be wall mounted (as shown), floor mounted, or even recessed into the ceiling.

3

Make a tempting hot chocolate display. Put your bar

cart to sweet use with glass jars of peppermint sticks, mini marshmallows, and sprinkles. Place mugs and cocoa powder on the second shelf.

4

Light a fire the easy way.

Fact: Few moments in life are cozier than lounging in front of the hearth. Fact: The effort of building a fire can put a damper on things. So make it simple: Stack a small pile of kindling (a.k.a. the small, dry sticks and twigs that burn quickly) as a base, crumple in pieces of newspaper, then light them.

Wrapping a room in one color, like this sumptuous lavender, has a cocoon-like effect.

5

Clean the humidifier. Parched lips and dried sinuses: not so comfy. Good moisture in the air can help prevent these winter woes, except that’s not going to happen if your humidifier is gunked up. Replace the filter at least once during winter, ideally twice; set a reminder on your calendar.

8

Upgrade your heating/ cooling. Had enough of those

high utility bills from central air? Fujitsu General’s mini-split heating and cooling systems are extremely energy efficient, and don’t require losing closet space to ductwork.

9

Plop on furry pillows.

6

Drop in rustic pieces.

Nesting tables made of reclaimed wood or a little wooden bench in your mud room are cozy and practical. Yay and yay!

7

Draft-proof your space. Heat gain and loss

through windows accounts for up to 30 percent of a home’s HVAC energy use, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Take a good look at the weather stripping and caulking on yours, and redo or replace as necessary with latex caulking. It's best to get the kind that's paintable, so you can match the trim on your windows.

Tossing a couple into the mix on your sofa cuddle-fies it.

10

Invest in attic insulation.

It can keep heating and cooling costs down. Doesn’t the mere thought of that warm your heart?

ke i cool This DIY caught our eye on Instagram, so we had to get the details.

Tassel alert! They’re made of yarn and strung on a wood dowel; gold jewelry wire is a stylish way to hang the piece up.

Brass accents like the mirror (from Target) and the sconce (from The Home Depot) warm up the space.

The planter and candleholder play off paint shades on the wall.

Once a plain IKEA vanity got resurfaced with pine, the old countertop seemed new too.

THE DIYER: Kara Whitten of @kailochic “I refreshed the bathroom in the art studio behind my house for less than $100! To give the walls color, I stamped them with paint using rectangular foam brushes—cutting off their corners created irregular shapes. Then I made my basic IKEA vanity not basic by gluing wood trim boards onto the drawers with Liquid Nails. The pulls are brass ones I covered in strips of leather and color-blocked with pink crafts paint. I love the new airy look.” HGTV Magazine 45

She amped up drama by painting the walls, embellished with decorative molding, gleaming white (High Reflective White by Sherwin-Williams) and the front door and doorframes black (Tricorn Black by SherwinWilliams). Then she adhered stained 1-inchby-2-inch pine slats to the ceiling (“killer arm workout!”). The flooring is stick-on vinyl tile from The Home Depot cut into a pattern. Says Camille, “It’s such a good marble dupe that guests can’t tell the difference.”

This sleek “console” is an IKEA shoe holder.

A vintage screen grounds a flighty scene.

my fantasy lounge Three-foot-tall herons and pink seating morphed a sitting area in the Phoenix-area home of Kamille Magette (@dreaming_of_ decor) into a tropical paradise. She’d seen and adored high-end heron wallpaper years ago; the peel-and-stick Wall Blush wallpaper with a salmon background was more reasonably priced. “Birds feel so alive to me, and these are fancy and elegant,” says Kamille. The sofa—by Joybird (of course!)—is an import from another part of the house, and she got the orange chair and coral pouf at Walmart and the fluffy rug from Overland. Kamille’s 13-year-old and her friends flock to the spot—they beg to crash here for sleepovers.

my super-cozy spot

Nice touch: Quarter round molding hides uneven board edges.

my actually exciting laundry room What happens when you have two dogs and a cat who like to hang in your bed? You end up doing a lot of laundry, like Christine Hanks (@callme_christine) of San Jose, CA, does. To make an all-white area enticing, she used six peppy shades of Dunn-Edwards paint and freehanded splotches from floor to ceiling over the course of a week. “The more abstract the blobs, the less I had to worry about being perfect,” she says. “People think that it’s wallpaper, but I’m like, ‘Nope, I made this.’ ”

“I wasn’t that experienced with power tools, but I was really motivated to create a place where my family could chill,” says Ryia Jose (@kinandkasa), who lives in Houston. First up, the bench: “I had all kinds of sketches!” says Ryia. She built it from plywood, complete with storage; the top is stained Early American by Minwax. She attached shiplap-style boards to it and the walls (painted Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore). An elevated end is made for a cup of coffee and a book; the pileup of pillows calls for snuggling.

my awkward area redo Yuni Min (@loveyourabode) had tried to give the 16-inchwide sliver of wall in her Atlanta-area kitchen a new life with photos. Nope. “The scale looked wrong,” she says. Her light bulb moment: Use it to show off cutting boards and vintage china. She hung beadboard wallpaper by Graham & Brown, then nailed in square dowels for shelves with strips of pine lattice in front to keep items secure. “I love how unexpected my plate rack is,” she says. “This space is valuable real estate!”

Heat oven to 375°F. In medium bowl, combine vegetables, chicken and soup; mix well.

Press each biscuit into 5 1/2inch round. Place 1 round in each of 8 greased regular-size mufn cups. Firmly press in bottom and up side, forming 3/4-inch rim. Spoon a generous 1/3 cup chicken mixture into each. Pull edges of dough over filling toward center; pleat and pinch dough gently to hold in place.

A selfportrait of Grandma Dolores

my tribute to my grandma A few weeks after designer Dani Nagel (@dazeyden) bought a house in Palm Springs, CA, to use as a getaway and an Airbnb, her artist grandmother died. “She never had the chance to show her work widely,” says Dani, who hadn’t yet decided on the living room look; now the paintings illuminated the way. Funky furniture, kaleidoscopic Hygge & West wallpaper, and stripes of Fireclay ceramic floor tiles enhance their bohemian glory. “Grandma would be overjoyed seeing her art honored in such a special way,” says Dani, “with so many people seeing it.”

those toughie decorating decisions

e v s

No more what-ifs, should I’s, or dunnos—the pros did the hard work for you. Woohoo!

What’s a smart way to decorate inside your front door when you don’t have a foyer? DO THIS “Create a setup that not only makes a great first impression but also maxes out storage,” says Pittsburgh, PA, designer Betsy Wentz. Consider a compact console with at least one drawer, two mini X-benches, or a storage bench if you have the space. “Benches with

ILLUSTRATIONS BY NIEN-KEN ALEC LU WRITTEN BY ELIZABETH JENKINS

lift-up tops look less busy than ones with open shelves for shoes,” she says. A mirror will expand the space, and a rug can define it. JUST DON’T… overdo the accessories—a small bowl for keys, a family photo, and a lamp keep everything simply chic.

One big piece of art or a few smaller pieces? DO THIS When there is a fair amount of furniture and accessories in a living room or bedroom, balance them with one large piece of art, says Los Angeles designer Cliff Fong. In hallways or stairwells, where space is tight and pieces are viewed up close by passersby, make an impact with several pieces. JUST DON’T… blow your minimalist style with a gonzo gallery wall. If your furniture is sleek and shelves are spare, for you that collection might mean just three or four pieces.

Which finish should my bathroom faucet be? DO THIS Base your decision on the towel bar, doorknob, and other fixtures you already have going on, says Danielle Fennoy, a designer in Brooklyn, NY. For predominantly cool tones, get a silvercolor faucet; if they’re warm, you could do brass or copper for a standout statement. Finishes don’t have to exactly match—phew! JUST DON’T… opt for polished finishes if fingerprints are going to bug you. “Polished chrome is high-maintenance,” says Fennoy. “Brass, nickel, and stainless steel all come in satin finishes, which will hide fingerprints much better.”

What size rug is right for a living room? DO THIS Size up your seating area, says Annie Selke, founder of Dash & Albert and Pine Cone Hill. If you have a sofa, coffee table, and two chairs, measure the sofa’s length and the distance between the backs of the sofa and chairs. That’s the smallest your rug should be. If you have the floor space, it’s nice to have at least 8 inches of rug showing beyond furniture. Painter’s tape can help visualize; use different colors to distinguish the sizes you’re deciding between. JUST DON’T… rely on internet photos for the rug style; you want to see the pattern in the actual room. Request a swatch from the company (many offer them) and move it around a few spots over the course of a few days.

HGTV Magazine 63

home + help Sectional sofa or smaller sofa plus accent chairs? I’m stumped!!! DO THIS “If you entertain a lot, hands-down a sofa and chairs— they’re the most conducive to conversation,” says designer Jean Liu, of Dallas, TX. Sectionals are dreamy for watching TV and compact ones can fit just fine in smaller spaces; some even have interchangeable chaises. JUST DON’T… purchase one until you mark off the footprint of the sofa or sectional on your floor with painter’s tape, to see how the size will work in your room.

Which tile material should I use for a backsplash? DO THIS Venture out to a showroom or two, where you'll be able to truly assess the texture of a tile and get a sense of the scale, says Portland, OR, designer Max Humphrey. Since tile showrooms usually have large boards where you can see several tiles displayed together, you can get a good sense of how they'll look installed. Ceramic and porcelain are most popular because they’re generally the least expensive, widely available, and easy to clean. Glass has pretty sheen and is a little pricier; marble is most expensive (and requires regular resealing). JUST DON’T… make a rush grout choice. Over time dark kinds can shed specks (like bits of pepper) and may annoy you if not applied in super-straight lines. Epoxy grout is waterproof, stain-resistant, and durable.

64 HGTV Magazine

Striped wallpaper? Floral? Geometric? Wha? DO THIS “Look to patterns you already gravitate toward—check your wardrobe or the last pillow you bought or pinned,” says Tavia Forbes, a designer in Atlanta, GA. Then start saving designs that you like on a Pinterest board. JUST DON’T… fall into an endless scroll zone. “Pin fatigue is real,” says Forbes. Save photos of your existing pieces (and any you plan to purchase) along with the wallpapers: “Viewing them together will help you choose a design that goes well with what you have.”

How can you figure out the ideal shape for a dining room table? DO THIS Let the dimensions of your room lead the way. “Ideally you want an equal amount of space around all sides of a table, which looks best,” says designer Whitney Jones, who’s based in New Orleans, LA. A rectangle table is the most popular kind; it mirrors the shape of the room, as can square tables. Round kinds have smaller footprints (a plus for petite spaces), and ovals are smart for skinny rooms. JUST DON’T… give in to temptation if a gorgeous table is too big, a typical mistake people make. The room will feel crowded. You want at least 36 inches of space between the table sides and the walls, to give people enough room to comfortably get in and out of their seats.

What’s a good paint choice for a room that’s not well lit? And I want color— no white walls for me! DO THIS “Ask yourself, ‘What’s the vibe I want to create?’ ” says Nicole Gibbons, founder of the paint company Clare. If you’re up for a dramatic look, she says, lean into the darkness with a deep, rich, cozy-looking dark green or navy blue. Otherwise, amplify the light that exists with a pale shade. “A soft blue will reflect whatever natural light comes in and make the room feel larger,” says Gibbons. JUST DON’T… rely only on the paint color. In a dim room you’ll likely need extra lighting, like a table lamp, a floor lamp, and maybe even sconces, too.

Should I go for Roman shades or curtains? DO THIS Relax—you can’t go wrong either way. “I personally tend to go with drapes because I think they frame a window beautifully and create the illusion of height in a room with lower ceilings if hung above the window,” says Skye Westcott, senior vice president of merchandising and design at Ballard Designs. “When you have nice trim around your

windows, will show off that detail.” JUST DON’T… forget your privacy and light needs. “If you have nearby neighbors, you’ll have to keep the drapes closed a lot and that will completely block out light,” says Skye. “You can always hang drapes and a shade on the same window to control the amount of light you let in during the day.”

how bad is it to snap photos of your food at restaurants?

GETTY IMAGES

answered by Rachel Barker, deputy photo director

It’s tempting when a dish is Instalicious, but you lose out. “You’re distracting yourself from being in the moment and savoring how food looks and tastes, not that I haven’t done it!” says Rachel. You’re there to enjoy the company, too, yet your tablemates are either waiting for you to figure out the perfect angle or they’re simultaneously snapping shots with their phones—kind of antisocial,

right? If you can’t resist foodstagramming, skip the flash and make it quick. “Get in really close to the dish, with the plate in the bottom corner of the frame, and include some of the table setting, like a bud vase,” says Rachel. Try to wait until the meal’s done (willpower, people!) to fiddle with the settings and post.

how bad is it if you can’t stand adult coloring books? answered by Scott Dvorin, deputy art director

“When people get fixated on picking the perfect palette or overwhelmed by the intricate designs, coloring can be the opposite of relaxing,” says Scott. Or perhaps you found it boring, but you want a similarly easy creative activity. Consider grown-up paint-bynumbers (fave staffer sources include Etsy shops Lets Paint Anywhere, Shopping Cult, and Stretarbokgems) and all-inclusive crafts kits that let you whip up anything from paper flowers to wall hangings. You’ll get the zen of focus and handiwork to display. Then again, you could kick back with a book of mazes for adults (also a thing) or an online connect-thedots game like Vertex. They just might satisfy the same nostalgic urges as a coloring book.

how bad is it to put indoor furniture outside (and vice versa)? answered by Lora Yoon Huh, home editor

(indoor decor outside) (outdoor decor inside)

Even if you coat upholstery with a waterproof spray or apply exterior paint to a piece, there could be trouble. “Cushion inserts and fill can get mildew, metal can rust,” says Lora. Indoor items made of natural material like rattan and jute shouldn’t head to the porch or deck, either, since they’re vulnerable to water damage. If you want to use outdoor stuff in the house, however, go for it! You’ll get stain resistance and durability. “And nobody will be able to tell—there are many stylish indoor–outdoor items these days, like polypropylene rugs and performance-fabric pillows,” says Lora. Ceramic garden stools and lanterns also look great in a home. Place rubber or felt protectors on the bottom to spare wood floors from scratches.

how bad is it to use just-out-of-the-fridge eggs in a recipe? answered by Noelle Paredes, associate home editor (and resident baker)

Although cold eggs won’t affect the taste of baked goods, they can mess up the texture. “When eggs aren’t room temperature, they don’t whip well,” says Noelle. That could cause other ingredients in your bowl to clump, resulting in an overly dense cake or cookie. “Once, I used cold eggs to make pancakes, and when the melted butter in the batter got chunky, I had to microwave the mix in increments to smooth it out—not a process I’d recommend,” says Noelle. In recipes with high-fat content, like cheesecake or pound cake, chilly eggs can cause fat to curdle (ick). Her quick trick: Place uncracked eggs in a bowl and cover with warm water for 5 minutes.

Crafts are just as enjoyable to do as they are to look at, glitter on the floor and all. That’s why we’ve shared hundreds over the years, big and small, for every skill level. These are some of our forever faves.

stripe a cabinet 1. Remove the doors and unscrew and discard the old knobs. Patch the holes with wood filler. 2. Sand and prime the door fronts. 3. Place the door fronts together, faceup, and use a pencil and a straightedge to draw stripes across both doors, as shown. We did nine stripes, each about 2 inches wide.

A June 2018 DIY that everyone in the office wanted to take home

4. Tape off every other stripe with delicate-surface painter’s tape. Paint stripes that replicate the colors shown. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet. Let dry. 5. Tape off the painted stripes. Paint the remaining stripes to match the colors shown. Let dry. 6. Screw in the new knobs, then rehang the doors. PAINT Hibiscus, Daisy, Regale Blue, Leapfrog, Invigorate, High Radish, and Reflective White, Amalfi, all by Sherwin-Williams

create a tasseled key chain 1. Cut a 20-inch-by-4-inch rectangle out of a piece of faux leather. Fringe the first 15 inches; each piece should be about 3 inches long and 1/8 inch wide. Cut the remaining material to make a 3/4-inch-wide tail. See Figure A at hgtv.com/birthday-projects. 2. Spray-mount together two small pieces of faux leather, good sides facing out. Trim into a 3-inch-by-1/4-inch strip.

spray-paint cacti 1. Spray-paint each potted plastic cactus a different color. 2. Bend back the leaves (or remove, if possible) to cover the pot and faux soil. Let dry. CACTI Artificial potted cacti, $27 for a set of Gloss 3, richards-expo.com SPRAY PAINT Gloss Black, and Gold Candy Pink, Specialty Metallic, all by Rust-Oleum

3. Place a key ring at the middle of the strip, then fold the strip in half. Hot-glue the ends together to form a loop. Flip the fringed piece of material wrong side up. Hot-glue the loop to the top right corner of the fringed piece. See Figure B at the link above. 4. Starting on the right, tightly roll the material, dabbing with hot glue to secure it as you go. Once you get to the tail, wrap it around the top of the fringe, securing it with hot glue.

make a designer-y canvas bag 1. Sketch out your design with a pencil and ruler. We drew rows of triangles that measure 3/4 inch across the bottom and 1 inch on the other two sides. 2. Fill in every other triangle with three different colors of permanent markers. If needed, erase pencil marks with a highquality eraser.

upcycle an old painting 1. Go to hgtv.com/birthdayprojects to download letter templates (we put the entire alphabet online so you can spell out any word you want). Reduce or enlarge the letters to fit the size of your existing art. Print them onto 8 1/2-inch-by-11-inch sheets of label paper and cut them out. 2. Remove the frame and wipe dust and dirt off the painting with a cloth. Decide where you’d like to put the letters, then stick a strip of painter’s tape below the mark as a guide to keep them straight. Stick on the letters and remove the tape. 3. Using a roller, cover the entire painting—including the sides—with a single coat of white crafts paint.

In November 2014 word art started warming our hearts (and never stopped).

4. Carefully peel off the stickers while the paint is still slightly wet, using tweezers if necessary. Let dry completely, then hang.

craft a rope bowl 1. Flip a plastic bowl upside down and place strips of double-sided tape on its base. Starting at the center of the base, begin coiling polyester rope (the tape will help hold it in place). Continue around the bowl, hot-gluing the rope to itself as you go. Once you reach the rim, cut the rope, then remove the bowl and tape. Melt the rope’s end with a match or a lighter so it doesn’t unravel, and secure with hot glue. 2. Paint the bottom third of the rope bowl with crafts paint. Let dry. CRAFTS PAINT Americana Sizzling Neons acrylic in Pink, and Craft Smart acrylic Neon Yellow and in Neon Orange

oh, yes: a pineapple lamp! 1. Spray-paint the plastic fruit white and let dry. 2. Wire with a lamp kit, following the package instructions, and hotglue to an acrylic base. 3. Top with a shade.

stencil a pillow 1. Go to hgtv.com/birthday-projects to download the ampersand template and print it onto an 8 1/2-inch-by-11-inch sheet of paper. 2. Cut a piece of freezer paper about the same size as your pillow. Lay the paper on top of the ampersand printout with the shiny side down. Trace the ampersand onto the freezer paper with a pencil. 3. Cut out the ampersand with a crafts knife and discard. Next, cut out the top and bottom empty spaces in the ampersand shape (see the illustration at the above link). 4. Stick a piece of cardboard inside a pillow cover to keep it flat. On medium heat, iron your DIY stencil—including the ampersand’s center sections—onto the pillow cover. 5. Using glitter spray paint, fill in the stencil. Remove the stencil while the paint is still wet, using tweezers for the ampersand’s center sections. Let dry. SPRAY PAINT

BRING IN ALL THE TEXTURES Like a secret ingredient, texture takes a room to the next level. Fuzzy, silky, plush, rough-hewn, woven: A medley of materials is engaging to look at. And they feel pretty darn good, too.

texture makes it charming All hail reclaimed wood! A 6-inch-thick slab on the concrete fireplace infuses this neutral-ish Craftsman space with charisma. It fits right in with the mix of wood in the console, the coffee table cubes, and the sofa base.

wallpaper can revamp a would-be-forgotten area like a hallway into its own remarkable spot—and glam up the underside of a staircase.

Wall hangings—like this yarn tapestry by Lauren Williams—add such softness, and their rise in popularity (we see you, macramé) has been a highlight of the decade.

DESIGN TALK,

D CoD D Now that you’re an expert on “adding texture,” here’s the scoop on other phrases designers toss around. “A LAYERED LOOK” Different materials, colors, patterns—the designer pulls these in (a.k.a. layers them) to give a room more visual appeal and character. “MOODY PAINT COLOR” When a pro suggests this, they mean a deep, dark color such as navy, eggplant, forest green, or black. Dramatic, yes, but it can be really calming. “IT NEEDS WARMTH” Not more blankets: This means a designer wants a space that’s on the modern or sleek side to feel cozier and more inviting. “LET’S KEEP IT HONEST” As in, a look that seems authentic opposite of “stuffy.”

Making over the place you grew up is the most meaningful kind of reno.

Back in 2005: homeowner Trae (right) Lamond with parents Dave and Jane

HGTV Magazine 113

Trae and his wife, Carolyn, loved the home’s original arched doorways so much, they added one to create a mini bar.

estaurant owners Trae and Carolyn Lamond were on the hunt for a home in Alexandria, VA, with a great kitchen. Trae’s parents had the solution: their place, a 1920s farmhouse where he’d been raised. “They had decided to sell and thought it would be cool to keep it in the family,” says Trae. Although the cooking space wasn’t quite the couple’s idea of foodie heaven, with its small footprint and dark cabinetry, the family-friendly neighborhood and dearth of other prospects won out. After tapping design/build team Michelle and Kevin Schmauder, they upped the size by merging it with the dining room; put in an island and new cabinetry; and ended up with a bright, cheerful spot. When Trae’s folks first came to see it, there was just a little sellers’ regret: “They said they wished they’d done the same 30 years ago!”

The workhorse of the room looks like a nice piece of furniture with vintage red oak banisters that serve as legs. “We planned the shape to house my cookbook collection,” says Carolyn. “Now I have easy access.”

Trae was particularly eager to ditch the gray linoleum (underneath it: very ’70s yellow hex tiles he used to roller-skate on). Red oak with a rich stain— Special Walnut by Minwax— infuses the room with warmth.

The Lamonds briefly considered white for the cabinets, “but it felt too plain-Jane for us,” says Trae. Minty green has a retro feel that speaks to the home’s age, and it’s just dark enough to hide scuffs and fingerprints. FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 122.
