ince moving into our home nearly two years ago, with the prospect of a whole-house refurb ahead of us, I’ve become a huge fan of moodboards. You’d think with all the decorating resources available to us now – magazines, Pinterest, Instagram, digital design tools – making style decisions would be easier than ever. But I don’t know about you, I find the opposite is true. There are times when I feel so overwhelmed by choice that making a decision about, say, a colour palette, seems completely daunting! Our Style Inspiration pages are always an excellent starting point – this month, they’re all about the new season’s colour trends (see page 19). Our Design My Space supplements are also full of inspiration. However, while it’s important to let ideas percolate, sooner or later you have to jump in and get started. A moodboard can really help set the direction of your decorating project, whether you opt for a digital version or prefer to create something on paper. Three moodboarding lessons I’ve learned… INSPIRATION CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE You don’t have to rely just on paint charts and fabric samples. Family photos or elements of nature, such as a seashell or bird’s feather, can spark an idea for a colour or texture. One of my favourite colour choices for a room was inspired by a much-loved pair of shoes! THEY CAN HELP SAVE TIME, MONEY AND MISTAKES You may find yourself rethinking some elements of your scheme as your vision comes together. Don’t be afraid to throw out or change ideas. IT’S FUN! You’ll hone your taste and design skills, and your confidence in your decision-making will soar. Good luck and enjoy the process!

SOFTLY DOES IT Charlotte Wakefield fell in love with weaving while doing a Textiles Design degree at Brighton University. She went on to work in the fashion industry as a fabric buyer and developer, but always yearned to return to the loom. A few years ago, she took the plunge and set up Woven Form, creating beautiful handwoven textile art pieces from her home studio in south-east London.

From her experience of working in fashion, she was all too familiar with the waste created by the textile industry, and didn’t want her own business to add to the problem. She asked a few mills about the possibility of repurposing yarns that would otherwise have been discarded, and got a positive response. Now she

‘Pink and green work so wonderfully together as they replicate the colour combinations found in nature’, says Charlotte Cosby, head of creative at Farrow & Ball. ‘Simply look outside to learn which colours harmonise.’ Here’s her advice for perfect pairings…

The natural combination of pink and green is calming, restful and suitable for most spaces. Sitting opposite each other on the colour wheel, they also offer maximum contrast to give a gentle energy to your rooms. When choosing your shades, opt for colours that have a similar weight for a cohesive feel; for example, a soft sage green and a pale peach pink. Alternatively, you could go much deeper with one shade so that it almost becomes a neutral backdrop to the other, lighter highlight.
It’s important to consider the light your room receives, and the atmosphere you wish to create. South-facing rooms are often filled with warm light from dusk until dawn, so you can either maximise this with red-based tones, or offset by choosing colours with cooler green pigments. For north-facing rooms, the light tends to be cool and gives rooms a moodier atmosphere. You could lean into the cooler light by embracing slightly deeper and warmer tones of olive green and plaster pink for a comforting feel.

To create a harmonious space, work within a family of colours and use varying strengths – a paint card is a helpful reference for establishing these groups. A lighter tone on the walls works beautifully with darker woodwork and doors. Consider the aspect of your space. These colours will intensify and appear much more orange in a south-facing room, so be sure to use cooler shades here. In north-facing rooms, the cold light can cause them to fall flat so ensure you choose warm, rich tones in those areas.
When pairing with neutrals, avoid bright, blue-toned whites as these will jar. Instead, a warmer white with red or ochre undertones will provide a much more balanced and cohesive feel. It’s important to test dramatic shades such as these in situ in order to understand how they will react to the light in your space. It’s also a good idea to test in more than one location within a room, as well as observing them in both daylight and artificial light, as the difference can be significant.

‘Using pastels doesn’t have to mean a sweet and sugary look,’ says Justyna Korczynska, colour expert at Crown. ‘Pale shades can be fresh and modern when combined with modern materials.’ She advises how to approach pastels with a sophisticated touch…

As with any colour, pale or strong, it is the underlying hue that determines how that colour will land in a room. To warm up a space, look for tones with a touch of pink or red pigment. Cooler pastels with a green or blue undertone help to reflect available light and create an expansive, open atmosphere. When pairing pastels with whites, you have two options. Either stick within the same tonal range – for example, pairing a cool white with cool pastels, or a warm white with warm pastels; this will make for a calm and serene interior. Alternatively, using

colours with opposing undertones, such as a cool white with a warm pastel, will create a stronger contrast, resulting in a more energetic, upbeat feel. Pastels also combine beautifully with bolder, darker touches such as charcoal – these will provide a striking contrast, adding depth and definition to the scheme. For a contemporary look, combine pastels with strong silhouettes and interesting shapes on furniture and furnishings. Look out for on-trend curves, clean minimal lines and large-scale, statement accessories.

arrow & Ball is a cherished brand in British design and decoration. Joa Studholme is the company’s wonderfully creative colour consultant, who lovingly crafts every shade from scratch before giving it a carefully chosen name. With a passionate belief in what she describes as ‘the magical power of paint’, Joa has worked with Farrow & Ball for more than 20 years and is a major player in the interiors world.
LIFE IN THE KALEIDOSCOPE
Joa’s love of colour was sparked in childhood – she recalls being captivated by a vivid red sky she saw while on holiday when she was very young, and spending a huge amount of time rearranging her Caran d’Ache crayons. ‘I wanted to see how different combinations worked together,’ she explains. ‘I still treasure those crayons to this day.’ As she grew up, the visual way Joa’s mind worked led her to describe people and places with colour references – a habit she has passed on to her own children. Inspired as much by the subtle shades of nature as by the brasher tones of printed packaging, she has a heightened awareness of ‘the colourful world we live in’ – a tendency she channels into her work. ‘Whenever I look at things, I’m thinking of ways to use their colours in an interior,’ she says.
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE
‘I have no formal training – I’m very much Farrow & Ball homegrown,’ says Joa. One of her key mentors was Tom Helme, who took over leadership of the brand in the early 1990s. ‘He brought the magic of
Farrow & Ball to the world, and has had a huge influence on my work,’ she says. As colour consultant, she has written two books, lectured on the effective and creative use of paint, and advised individual clients on their decorating projects. Her advice is sought around the world, and she delivers her expertise both online and through home visits. ‘The consultancy service means I have no typical day, as every house and each owner are very different,’ she says. ‘I’ve always been determined that the process should be collaborative. My role is to help people find colours they will love.’
COLOUR CHART
The process of creating new shades involves an enormous amount of creativity. ‘I have a very good memory for colour and, if I have the time, I will mix a colour as soon as I see something that inspires me, whether that’s my daughter’s rosy cheeks, some potted shrimp or shades of the sky. I have many notebooks full of tiny colour samples.’ When working on a new shade, Joa uses ramekins and teaspoons in a process she describes as ‘very low-tech’. She then shares these with Charlotte Cosby, Farrow & Ball’s creative lead, and the pair decide which ones to go ahead with. They are then sent to the colour lab, after which Joa analyses them in every finish, from the very flat to high gloss. ‘It’s vital to look at them in large areas in every light condition,’ she explains. During this time she also works on the names of and stories behind the colours. Rangwali, the brand’s bold pink, for example, takes its name from the powder thrown during the ancient Indian House Beautiful SEPTEMBER 2021 45

festival of Holi, while Stiffkey Blue (pronounced ‘stoo-key’) was inspired by mud spotted on a North Norfolk beach. ‘The whole process is very time-consuming, so there’s often a long, long wait before our new colours are unleashed on the world,’ she says.
HOME LIFE
Joa has lived just off London’s Portobello Road, known for its colourful house fronts and antiques markets, for more than 30 years. ‘My home is now considerably smaller than it was, due to the countless layers of paint!’ she jokes. But, in addition to the urban surroundings that have inspired her for so long, these days she also enjoys a whole different type of space. ‘I now spend as much time as I can in a small but perfectly formed home in the fields of Somerset with my husband and our dog. It’s an old Victorian schoolhouse with two main rooms and three tiny bedrooms.’ Perhaps surprisingly, much of this house is painted in a special white that was created especially for the space. ‘It hasn’t come naturally to live in a house mostly in white, and in the smaller 46 housebeautiful.com/uk
spaces we’ve used a lot of colour, including Setting Plaster, Light Blue, French Gray, Rangwali and Oval Room Blue,’ says Joa. ‘It changes constantly, though, and I’m often to be found wielding a paintbrush up a ladder at six in the morning!’ Artwork is dotted around the house and books take up a whole wall in the main room. ‘My husband and I are inveterate collectors of the things we love, from an array of olive-oil tins picked up from all over the world to the 60 nativity scenes that come out every Christmas!’ she explains.
POWER OF COLOUR
In a world where trends come and go, what does Joa have to say about current fashions in the world of paint? ‘At Farrow & Ball we don’t follow trends; we set them,’ she points out. ‘However, we’ve noticed a seismic shift in the way people are using colour in their homes over the past two years, and I love to see how our paints work in our customers’ spaces.’ Above all, she believes that colour doesn’t just change how a room feels, but also how we feel in a space. ‘It contributes greatly to our wellbeing,’ she insists. JOA’S DECORATING TIPS ‘Paint can give the illusion of entirely changing a room’s shape or size,’ says Joa. ‘It can also make ceilings feel higher or lower.’ Here, she shares three top tips to take on board while making your all-important colour choices: » Colour isn’t just about the
walls so, when planning a new scheme, make a list of every element that needs to be painted, from ceilings and architectural details to woodwork and furniture. » Let light be your friend.
Work out which way your room faces and see how the changing light is likely to affect your chosen paint at different times of day. Rooms you use more in the evening, for example, can be stronger in colour to create snug spaces for retreat. » Look to nature for successful
colour combinations. ‘I’ve always adored purples, pinks and greens together as they often dominate our gardens,’ says Joa. ‘My favourite example is the humble aubergine. Its skin inspired our Brinjal colour, while the stalk is close to our Churlish Green.’ House Beautiful SEPTEMBER 2021 47

hen Natasha bought her house in 2019, not much had been done to it since its construction in the 1960s, and she was under no illusions about how much TLC it would need to bring it up to scratch. Luckily, she had the perfect source of advice and inspiration in the form of her long-term partner Freddie. ‘I saw the potential immediately,’ says Freddie, the creative force behind London interiors shop Do South. ‘I wanted to upgrade it sensitively, keeping the original feel of the house but mixing the old with the new. I felt like a kid in a sweetie shop!’ His vision was to retain the existing A-frame but extend it by adding dormer windows, and to reconfigure the space on the ground floor to give the house a modern feel. ‘It needed some layout changes to improve the flow,’ he explains. The extensive refurbishment that followed transformed the house into a real local talking point. A firm believer in recycling, Freddie salvaged what he could from the property, including the lights in the hall and a retro sideboard belonging to the previous owner, but otherwise it had to be gutted from top to bottom. His vision was clear: ‘We wanted to create a Scandi vibe, making the house look amazing, but so simple.’ On the ground floor, the original parquet had to be taken up as it had become damp. Replacing it with terrazzo stone throughout created a cohesive flow and complemented the wood details. It also gave the couple the opportunity to install underfloor heating – a welcome touch of luxury. Walls were removed on the ground floor to open up the space and create a fabulous open-plan kitchen-dining room. Designed by Freddie, the showstopping oak and walnut staircase was a labour of love, and has become his pride and joy. Based on the open-tread style popular in the 1970s, it adds a sense of theatre to the space. Several of the original doors were replaced with pocket doors,

which glide open and slide into the wall’s cavity. For the walls, Freddie used grey paint from Mylands, choosing yellow accents to brighten it up and ‘add happiness’. Freddie was keen to create a connection between the inside and the outside of the house and has managed to plan the rooms to ensure most have uninterrupted views of the garden. Finishing touches come from the varied artworks that give the home a unique warmth, some of which were imported from Africa. ‘They add a certain quirkiness,’ he says. Upstairs, dormer windows were installed to increase the living area and allow light to flood in, and one of the bedrooms has been converted to an office, as Natasha works from home. Having sourced so many pieces from his shop, Freddie saw this renovation as a fantastic opportunity to showcase his work. More importantly, however, he wanted to create a home that Natasha would be proud of. He says his favourite memory was seeing her reaction when it was all complete. ‘She just loves it!’ he grins. espite its small garden, the Neo-Grec brownstone house in Brooklyn, New York, instantly charmed British-born landscape designer Miranda Brooks when she first saw it. She and her husband, architect Bastien Halard, were looking to move from Manhattan, and the 19th-century property, laid out over four floors and with a little carriage house at the end of the garden, fitted the bill perfectly. A complete renovation was embarked upon, managed by Bastien alongside his work, and Miranda undertook the transformation of the garden, creating a verdant oasis from what had been an unpromising paved space. Though many of her commissions have been the design of grand gardens for the well-heeled – including American Vogue editor Anna Wintour’s Hamptons retreat – Miranda’s love of naturalistic planting and desire to bring a sense of intrigue, in which not every part of the garden is visible at once, is every bit as magical in small spaces. An early intention to stick to a pared-back palette was soon jettisoned in favour of lush planting and an abundance of colour. Here, poppies and daisy-like erigeron pop up among roses, lilies, and tulips for a traditional country feel that could be a million miles away from the bustle and noise of the city just beyond the wall. The rooftop garden, however, is a different story. Featuring beautifully organised beds inspired by Elizabethan gardens, it includes a mix of annuals and vegetables as well as herbs, dog roses and honeysuckles. Many of these, in addition to the scented geraniums Miranda grows in the greenhouse she has managed to squeeze in, find their way indoors in the stunning arrangements that she places throughout the house. And it’s not just in the displays of branches, bulbs and flowers that a sense of the botanical is evident. It can be seen in the Marthe Armitage hand-printed wallpapers in the girls’ rooms – Violette Grey has horse chestnuts and Poppy has birds and butterflies – while a custom de Gournay Tree of Life design decorates the main bedroom

– even a set of doors features a flowering vine hand-drawn by a friend. But these scenes of natural beauty didn’t necessarily come easily. In the transformation of their home, the colour schemes were down to Miranda, but many of the other decisions involved fierce debate between her and Bastien. The result, however, is a harmonious look that seems rooted in the property’s history, and with all the charm that Bastien was determined to include. By exposing the rafters and painting the wooden floors, he’s created a relaxed and informal backdrop that perfectly enhances the happy mix of recycled and time-worn pieces from vintage fairs, as well as quirky and interesting treasures sourced abroad. In the kitchen, for

In order to create a room that felt more like a living area than a purely functional space, the couple decided to forgo wall cabinets for artworks, much of it done by friends, while Miranda’s substantial collection of china is housed in a huge unit topped with 300-year-old white oak. Referencing Miranda and Bastien’s heritages, the first floor has been decorated with a French aesthetic in mind – featuring a traditional chevron-pattern parquet flooring typical of Parisian apartments – and the middle floor with an English look. However it’s at the top of this townhouse where the couple’s styles meld. This New York-inspired zone is home to a fabulous combination of traditional and designer elements. This is perfectly illustrated in the bathroom, with the inclusion of an eighteenth-century Swedish carved bench that Miranda bought at auction, and a hanging light created by Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld in the early part of the 20th century, which Bastien bought online. Like the kitchen, the bathroom is more than just a functional space – designed for relaxation, it features an elegant navy-painted rolltop bath, comfortable upholstered seating, and simple shelves built by Bastien, holding an array of books. The couple spend much of their time up here and it’s where they catch up at the end of the day. They believe this area, where their tastes meet, to be the most successful part of their interior – a little creative tension, perhaps, being an essential ingredient in creating such a harmonious result. or Shilen Patel and his wife Rachel Murray, having a family retreat by the sea was a long-cherished dream, and the idea of building something new appealed to Shilen, who has a passion for architecture and design. The two wishes were granted in the form of Pobble House, in the dramatic setting of Dungeness on the Kent coast. This is something of a Marmite location, with its expanses of shingle, big skies and nuclear power station looming nearby. Artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman helped make Dungeness famous with his own striking house and shingle garden, recorded in the landmark book Derek Jarman’s Garden. Since then, the area has become increasingly popular with artists and architects, many of whom live alongside the fishing families and settled residents of this curious English enclave. Shilen first became interested in this part of the coast on boyhood bike rides from south London, and for many years his family kept a beach hut in Whitstable in Kent where they enjoyed days out by the sea. However, Shilen and Rachel decided they would like more substantial accommodation as a holiday escape from the working week and their terraced home in London’s Finsbury Park. ‘We made the decision that we wanted a bolthole of some description, where the family could let loose and be by the sea,’ says Shilen. ‘So we started thinking about where we might like to be, and Dungeness came back into my mind as somewhere that would be really interesting to investigate. I was a little uncertain at first about whether Rachel would like it, but we drove down and fell in love with the otherworldliness of it. It’s not like living in a picture-postcard

‘We wanted it to be OPEN and sociable, but needed plenty of built-in STORAGE ’ village, but we really enjoy the solitude, peace and quiet, as well as the landscape, which is constantly changing.’ Shilen and Rachel came across a 1930s bungalow and garage set back from the slim coast road that traverses the headland. The property was in poor condition and crumbling, so Shilen knew that the family would have a good chance of getting planning permission to either replace or refurbish it. Research into contemporary architects with local connections led them to Guy Hollaway, who has offices in Hythe and London. Together, architect and clients began working on ideas for a replacement house that would echo the size, height and profile of the original, while offering a contemporary home suited to the family and spacious enough to accommodate visiting friends. ‘We wanted it to be open and sociable but we needed plenty of built-in storage to stash away a lot of kit – a bit like you would have in a boat,’ says Shilen. The other side of the brief was building a modern house that blended into the landscape rather than standing out. Working with the original footprint of the house and sightlines of Dungeness Lighthouse, Hollaway designed a new timber-framed house clad largely in pale larch, with an outrigger clad in Corten steel. ‘The building is extremely durable, which is important considering the harsh coastal climate and exposed setting,’ says the architect. The old garage was replaced with a six-bed children’s bunkroom for Tilika, Jaymin and
Flores, plus any visiting friends, while a glass link to the rest of the house echoes the gap between the two original structures. A spine hallway passes two bedrooms and bathrooms before arriving in the open-plan sitting room and kitchen, and a recessed dining area, picked out in a seaside blue, contrasts with the fresh whites and oak floors. In this sociable space, seating is arranged around a woodburner and big corner windows framing views of the lighthouse and open landscape. The dining area, with its bespoke benches and large table, is a focal point for family life – four o’clock tea and cake is an honoured tradition here. The area around Pobble House has been restored and returned to nature. With no boundaries between the building and the surrounding expanse of shingle and grassland, the dramatic sense of openness and space is reinforced. Its pale colours mean the new house, which took a year to build and is now shared with holiday-let guests, blends into the landscape as a discreet presence in this extraordinary setting. ‘I just love the contrast with everyday life,’ says Rachel. ‘In London we have a terraced home and the school run and all the normal things, but here we have the space and open scenery and the big skies. It’s all about going for a walk, throwing stones in the sea or inviting friends to come and stay and going over to the fish hut and then cooking a good meal together. Having no television is a big help as well – the view of the beach is all we need.’ House Beautiful SEPTEMBER 2021 79

he downshift from townhouse to country cottage can be a bumpy ride. But if you’re lucky, enough of your old furniture will suit your new place to smooth the transition. And if you’re really lucky, as the Daughtry family was, everything fits so well, it actually looks better in its new setting – as though this was the house it had been waiting for all along. Amanda Daughtry and her photographer daughter Belle have always collected pieces from antiques shops and brocante fairs. Their eye for design – and Belle’s natural gift for creating camera-ready rooms – found the perfect home in this whitewashed Suffolk cottage with its steep red-tiled roof. They’d moved from a residential street in an Essex town to an isolated village four miles from the nearest shop, so the lifestyle change could hardly have been greater. ‘Especially as the Beast from the East arrived a couple of months after us,’ recalls Amanda. ‘We were snowed in for a week and wondered what we’d done.’ But the house itself welcomed them with ease. Open and ‘flowing’, with rooms that lead naturally into one another, it has a surprising amount of space for a cottage, with no narrow corridors or poky corners. It’s managed to retain all its original character – 17th century in the oldest part – without being the ‘jumble of small rooms’ that Amanda and Belle wanted to avoid. Crucially, it also has two adjoining sitting rooms, ‘so Dad can watch the football in one of them,’ explains Belle. The downshift was prompted by the fact that her three elder brothers had all left home

and the family no longer needed so many bedrooms: the Suffolk cottage has all the hallmarks of a place where its female inhabitants – and their possessions – can breathe freely after years of accommodating male priorities. You can understand how cream-covered sofas, elegant painted furniture, faded floral linens and antique chandeliers would look more comfortable here than in a three-storey townhouse, and their scale also suits the lower ceilings and smaller windows. There’s nothing precious about it, though: it’s all relaxed rather than careful-where-you-sit perfect, and it’s home to Peppa, their rescue Shih Tzu, as well as Richard, Amanda and Belle. The downstairs floors are reclaimed brick, plain and rugged; the kitchen worksurfaces have been crafted from zinc and scaffold boards; and the windows are left pretty much curtainless apart from the odd length of voile or lace. ‘The countryside is so wonderful here that we’d rather put up with draughts and have the view,’ says Amanda. The cottage is surrounded by farmland, with a meadow of ox-eye daisies in summer and dozens of walks for Peppa. ‘I think being townies makes us appreciate it even more,’ she says. Amanda remembers Belle being the sort of child who couldn’t resist rearranging her bedroom furniture. ‘I would be downstairs and hear her dragging things across the floor.’ Belle studied photography at A level, then started work at the Cabbages & Roses store in Chelsea, initially as a sales assistant but gradually taking on photographic work for the brand and then consolidating her skills by assisting on shoots (she helped with the visuals for Rachel Ashwell’s book My Floral Affair

and Pearl Lowe’s Faded Glamour). The move to Suffolk gave her the momentum to launch her freelance business full time. Her garden studio doubles as an extra guest room (for when her brothers come to stay), furnished with daybeds that can be pulled outside on summer afternoons. But most of the time it’s fully stocked with her fabric and wallpaper swatches, moodboards, huge buckets of dried flowers and trays of her postcard images of the garden. The house itself, meanwhile, provides any number of backdrops for Belle’s Instagram posts and lifestyle and interiors photography. Her favourite is the dining room (‘the light there is perfect for my photos’), in the 18th-century extension that reaches out under a lower roof at one end of the house. Amanda’s happy place is the kitchen, tucked in under the cat-slide roof at the back, looking out onto the garden. It’s the only room where the family made any major changes, fitting new cabinets from British Standard and leaving the upper walls clear of cupboards; instead, a couple of shelves hold carefully curated ceramics and the occasional painting, and a narrow-planked ceiling highlights the steep pitch of the roof. Three staircases – one for each bedroom – provide the house with plenty of private space, despite the open flow of the ground-floor rooms. It’s the bedrooms, with their steep, beamed ceilings and low dormer windows, that give scope for Amanda and Belle to indulge their more romantic decorative ideas. Painted cabinets in pastel blues and pinks match the faded florals of rugs and bedlinen, mostly from Rachel Ashwell, whose Shabby Chic brand suits the house perfectly. (‘Only she’s based in LA now, so we have to ship things over from there!’) In Belle’s room, a tiered lampshade, suspended above the bed rather like a canopy, adds a fairy-tale quality. And on a cream-painted chest sits a vintage chandelier hung with crystal droplets and turquoise glass flowers – a long-ago purchase from the Country Living Fair, says Belle. ‘It used to hang in our old dining room, but the ceilings are too low for it in the cottage.’ One small piece of the old house that didn’t quite fit the new one – but still manages to look completely at home… HB

DINING AREA ‘We assumed the kitchen would have to stay in this corner, but our interior architects suggested it would work better as a dining area,’ says Carrie. A rosewood table and Kai Kristiansen dining chairs bring mid-century-style
W
hen Carrie and Eoin Hegan first lived together it was in a converted factory space in east London. And when the couple decided to move on and buy a home together, it made more sense to look to the area’s wealth of Victorian townhouses that were more suitable for family life. But they never quite forgot their first love – relaxed open-plan living. ‘When we moved here, the first floor was three rooms, but it was always our intention to knock them into one large space,’ says Carrie. ‘We had got used to the feel and style of warehouse living, so we decided to recreate it here in a more refined way.’ Now their living and dining space flows into the kitchen; their son’s bedroom and the bathroom are refurbished and an extension created a cool main bedroom suite in the loft space. Throughout, urban elements such as bare brick walls, wooden flooring and old-school brassware are set against shapely mid-century furniture, artworks and statement lighting. As the new bedroom suite was created from scratch, it was relatively straightforward to plan out, and it benefits from floor-to-ceiling bifolds across the back wall. But reworking the main living space proved to be more of a challenge. ‘This floorplan used to be a skinny kitchen and a dining room at the front of the house, overlooking a park, and a seldom-used living room at the back,’ remembers Carrie. Tom Phillips, head designer at Phillips Design Studio helped the couple imagine this floor and suggested moving the kitchen to the back of the house, where light floods in through the high window. ‘We hadn’t considered switching things around, but Tom’s ideas opened up a completely fresh floor plan,’ says Carrie. ‘The kitchen now gets loads of natural light, which is really practical, while the living room and new dining area have views over a park at the front.’ The kitchen was bespoke by Phillips Design Studio, but Carrie sourced all the finishing touches, from reconditioned vintage taps to

brass bar stools, which are perfect for breakfast or drinks with friends. The separate dining area is close enough to be practical, but also feels as though it occupies its own zone, alongside an exposed brick wall. ‘This spot is where the old kitchen used to be,’ explains Carrie, ‘but it works far better as a dining space.’ By the time the extension and renovations started, Carrie was pregnant with their son, Ethan. Inevitably, the work over-ran, so Carrie’s first weeks of maternity leave were far from the relaxing break she’d envisaged. ‘Instead of pampering myself, I got woken up early every day by the builders and then headed out for most of the day to escape the dust and banging,’ she says. A few weeks after Ethan was born, the loft was finished and they could head up to their new escapist bedroom as a family of three. ‘Even in winter, this is a really bright and light room,’ says Carrie. ‘On a weekend morning, it’s a great feeling to wake up here and look out at the sky.’ Carrie’s style evolved as the renovation progressed. ‘I love how you are exposed to all kinds of inspiration in London,’ she says. ‘I get ideas from trips to the city’s flea markets, art exhibitions, cafes and bars.’ The lights over the kitchen island are a case in point. ‘Eoin and I got chatting to a coffee shop owner in Soho and I asked her where she’d bought her lights, so she put me on to her supplier. The people you meet can be a fantastic source of inspiration, alongside interiors magazines and Pinterest.’ Art and photography also add plenty of character, from classic Slim Aarons photographs they bought in New York to limited edition prints by contemporary artists such as Dan Hillier. Even their son Ethan’s room has its fair share of interesting artworks, with cute but

‘I get IDEAS from trips to FLEA MARKETS, art EXHIBITIONS, cafes and bars’ cool animal prints. Carrie is a self-confessed bargain hunter and a favourite find is the vintage Pierre Vandel coffee table she found on Ebay. ‘A glass coffee table wouldn’t be everyone’s perfect choice with a toddler, but so far both have survived!’ she jokes. There are plenty more mid-century shapes in this space, including a sideboard, now placed between the living room and the kitchen – a perfect place to store all of Eoin’s old vinyl records. The rosewood dining table and vintage Kai Kristiansen dining chairs are also pieces that Carrie sourced from online vintage sellers. ‘When I look around our home, there’s a satisfaction in knowing where I tracked down each item,’ she says. Several pieces were bought abroad: ‘The living room rug was haggled for in Morocco and my favourite vintage jar in the kitchen was bought in a French market on our honeymoon,’ she adds. ‘The memories make them feel all the more special.’ HB

hat was your vision? We wanted a light-filled open space that flowed from the hallway and had room for the children to play. The back of the house gets sunlight all afternoon and evening and we wanted to make the most of that. We were after a fairly modern backdrop where we could layer up textures, materials, colours and antiques to create our own unique kitchen-diner.
W ‘The old kitchen was a narrow space with 1960s cupboards and a Belfast sink built into the brickwork. Between the kitchen and former sitting room was a big chimney and fireplace taking up a huge amount of space.’ 100 housebeautiful.com/uk
This was just one room you were renovating… Yes. The kitchen was part of a whole-house refurb, and the structural work required nine steel beams and columns from the ground floor up to the roof. The rotten windows were rebuilt as wooden sashes and the room was completely replumbed, rewired and replastered. The biggest challenge, though, was removing the central chimney stack that serviced the old kitchen and sitting room behind. Did it all run smoothly? Not exactly! It got off to a rocky start due to issues with building regulations and the party wall. It
took six months to get the project started, during which we lost our builder. In the end, Tom took the project management on himself, having had some experience renovating our shop. How did you juggle the project with work? We worked around our business, so if the shop was busy we couldn’t do as much on the kitchen. Describe your style… We don’t follow trends; our approach is to buy what we love. We’ve got things from France and Turkey that don’t necessarily go together according to ‘the rules’, but that doesn’t matter to us. Is there anything you’d do differently? The cement tiles. The recommended sealing process for them didn’t work and, with underfloor heating, they’d be expensive to replace. Are you pleased with the results? It was a huge challenge, but having our dream kitchen makes it all worthwhile. HB

‘Like many 1930s homes, the house had a small bathroom and separate loo. It made sense to knock through and turn two poky rooms into one larger family bathroom.’ 102 housebeautiful.com/uk
hat was your old bathroom like? There were some ‘interesting’ colour choices! And it had been designed for an elderly person, complete with a swing seat to lower them into the bath. The basin was below the window, meaning we couldn’t have a mirror, and the wall dividing it from the loo took up space that we were able to use more efficiently by knocking through.

Why did you start with the bathroom? With our young daughter, Eva, it was important to have a clean, functioning bathroom as soon as possible. However, we had to be careful not to spend too much money on it because we plan to do more renovations further down the line, including creating a large extension, at which point the bathroom will need to be removed.
How long did it take? Just over a couple of weeks. We bought the whole suite as ex-display, and my husband’s company, Swann Bathrooms, carried out the work. The bath was longer than average, so Darren had to chase the wall out to make it fit.
Tell us about the decor Because I knew the bathroom was temporary, the decision-making was quick and easy. I chose the paint colour first. I have a passion for Farrow & Ball
What were your priorities? I wanted to create a family bathroom that would grow with Eva. A towel rail close to the bath was also essential, and the tiles behind the toilet and basin are a nice feature.
And what was your best decision? Using a dramatic paint colour – it adds character and interest without costing a fortune. Plus the paint we chose is an easy-to-clean formula, so any condensation on the walls can be wiped away without leaving marks. HB

Did you need to change much? Everything! Walls, floor coverings, window... and there was a cupboard housing the hot water tank where the bookcase is now. The whole house needed refurbishment when we bought it. Slowly, we updated it all, and this was the last room to do.

hat did you want to achieve? I was keen to create a dedicated workspace that was separate from the rest of the house – somewhere I could close the door on at the end of the day so work wouldn’t encroach on home life. This room would have made an ideal third bedroom, but as there are just two of us, it was logical to transform it into a dedicated office space.
Priorities and must-haves? There were two things I considered essential: built-in storage and a ceiling-height cork board. Every home office needs them! The bookcase and shelves offer a lot more storage than freestanding options, and if you design them according to your needs, it’s quite a simple job for a joiner to make them. Having a cork board all the way up to the ceiling makes the room feel taller and frames the working area beautifully. And it’s a practical place to pin all your bits and pieces. What inspired the decor? As an interiors photographer I get to see and photograph incredible homes and work with talented interior designers, so I’m never short of ideas. The room is a tale of two halves – the desk side has a pale, fairly neutral feel that’s easy on the eye and creates an air of calm. Turn around and you’re met with a dark, dramatic wall painted in Farrow & Ball’s Railings, a bluey-black that is softer than you’d imagine. The contrast between the light and dark is really effective. How well does it work as an office? This is my dream space. All my work equipment is in one place, and having a comfortable armchair in there is an incentive to take short breaks and clear my head – and even close my eyes for a few minutes every now and then! 2 x 400g tins chickpeas, drained 1tbsp olive oil » 250g kale, leaves shredded (stems discarded) » 1 lemon, zest finely grated and the juice of ½ » 1½ large cucumbers, peeled, halved lengthways, seeds scooped out and discarded, flesh cut into 1cm crescents » 10 dill sprigs, ½ fronds finely chopped and ½ left whole » Leaves picked from 10 sprigs mint, finely chopped » 100g Greek yogurt

1 Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas mark 7. Spread half the chickpeas over a baking sheet. Add the oil, roll the chickpeas in it until glossy, and roast for 30min until golden. Season with lots of flaky salt then set to one side. 2 Transfer the kale leaves to a mixing bowl, add ½tsp flaky sea salt, then use one hand to squeeze or ‘massage’ the kale for a minute or so, until reduced in volume. 3 Add the lemon zest and lemon juice along with the non-roasted chickpeas,
mix them together and fluff with a fork. 4 Put the cucumber crescents into a separate bowl, add a pinch of salt and stir. 5 Add the chopped herbs and the yogurt to the cucumber before transferring two thirds of the mixture from the bowl to the kale. Mix again with a fork, then add most of the remaining dill fronds (saving a few for the garnish) along with lots of black pepper, and mix again. 6 Decant onto a large platter or individual plates. Top with the remaining cucumber and yogurt, the crisp chickpeas, then the smoked fish in large flakes, and finish with the final dill fronds.

1tbsp neutral cooking oil 50g sliced coppa (see cook’s note) » Flaky sea salt » Crusty bread, to serve 1 Very roughly chop half the melon and two of the cucumbers and transfer to a blender jug. Add the garlic, tomatoes, ice, half the shallot, the olive oil, 1tsp salt and half the lemon juice, then pulse and blitz for 2min, or until completely smooth. Refrigerate until you’ve finished the next stage. 2 Chop the remaining shallot as finely as you can and dice the leftover melon and
cucumber into 1-2cm pieces. Combine in a bowl, adding the radishes, mint, a good pinch of salt and the remaining lemon juice. 3 When ready to eat, warm the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the ham until crisp, flipping just once. 4 Meanwhile, give the chilled soup a good stir (it may have separated a little) and divide among four bowls. 5 Pile the chopped salad in the middle of each bowl, add the crisp ham, and season the soups with a few flakes of salt, a decent glug of extra virgin olive oil, and additional lemon juice if you think it needs it.

Coppa is a traditional Italian ham made from pork neck fillet, dry cured in a gentle mix of herbs and spices, then air-dried for three months. Prosciutto would make a good alternative.

2tbsp crisp fried shallots or onions 1 lime, zested and quartered (included above) 1 Combine all the ingredients for the patties in a bowl (except the oil, which is used for frying), mix well, then use wet hands to shape into eight balls, approximately 80g each. Set on a plate, lightly press into patty shapes and refrigerate until required. 2 Combine the sauce ingredients in a bowl. 3 Cut the carrots into thin matchstick-like strips. Cut away the thickest stems from the herbs but otherwise leave as intact sprigs. 4 Cook the noodles following the packet instructions, drain and cool under a running tap, then drain again, shuffling them with clean fingers so they don’t clump together. 5 Place a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add 1tbsp cooking oil and, once hot, add the patties. Fry for 90secs before flipping and cooking for the same amount of time, then repeat on both sides. Sear the edges too, then remove from the heat. 6 While the pork patties are cooking, assemble four separate bowls of noodles, adding the carrots, lettuce and fresh herbs. Add the patties, a sprinkling of peanuts, shallots or onions, and a lime quarter to each bowl, before pouring the sauce over.
1 Place a griddle pan or frying pan over a high heat and allow it to warm for 3-4min. 2 Brush the peach flesh with a little oil, then place on the pan and leave to colour for 2-3min. Use tongs to turn the peach segments and char any other cut surfaces, then transfer them to a chopping board. Chop into 1-2cm dice. 3 Put the diced peach into a mixing bowl. Sprinkle the basil leaves over the peach, then add 3tbsp olive oil along with the pistachios, lemon juice, a pinch of sea salt and a couple of grinds of black pepper, and mix well. 4 Place the burrata in the centre of a plate, using a sharp knife or scissors to open it up, then spread it out a little so that the middle oozes out. 5 Spoon the peach mixture over the top and drizzle with the remaining olive oil.

Papaya, lychee and Thai basil fruit salad This combination will reinvigorate your palate. SERVES 4 » ½ large papaya, peeled, seeds scooped out » 12 fresh lychees, peeled » About 15 leaves Thai holy basil » Thick-set coconut yogurt, to serve FOR THE SYRUP » 2 sticks lemongrass, chopped » 50g fresh ginger, thinly sliced (skin on) » 1 star anise » 120g caster sugar » 120ml water 1 Combine the syrup ingredients in a pan. Bring to the boil and simmer for around 8min, so the liquid is glossy and fragrant. 2 Remove from the heat and leave to cool for an hour. Strain through a sieve into a bowl, discard the aromatics and chill the syrup until required. 3 Cutting across the width of the papaya, slice it into 2cm crescents. Arrange them on a platter and scatter the lychees into the gaps, then spoon the syrup over the top. 4 Drag the basil leaves through any residual syrup, add as a garnish, and serve with a generous dollop or two of coconut yogurt. These little kernels have a sweet, buttery taste that can be enhanced by gently toasting. Use them to add flavour and texture to a whole host of dishes. Add to salads Toast them in a dry frying pan, then sprinkle over tomatoes or add to a herby grain salad for texture and flavour. Make a crust for meat or fish Blitz up a tablespoon or two of pine nuts with some breadcrumbs and herbs to make a delicious crust for salmon, chicken or lamb. Bake into a tart Torta della nonna is a classic Italian dessert involving custard and, often, lemon. It’s finished with a handful of pine nuts before baking.
September may well be my favourite food month. Late-summer produce is still going strong, our orchards and hedgerows are heaving with fruit, and there’s still the possibility of a balmy Indian summer. Also joining the party is delicious autumnal produce – including, most excitingly, wild mushrooms. The UK is home to more than 15,000 varieties of wild mushroom, only some of them edible, and there is some significant risk in foraging for them yourself. If you’re incredibly careful, you can save cash by scouring local woodlands for ceps, chanterelles, girolles and other autumnal treasures, but I personally don’t trust my mushroom knowledge. A reputable commercial foraging company will do it for you (see Shop Small, Buy Well, below), or you can buy trays of them in many grocers and farmers’ markets. Wherever you get them from, wild mushrooms often come coated in earth or other woodland debris, and it can be tempting to give them a good wash but, like little sponges, they soak up liquid, which dilutes their flavour. Better to brush off any dirt with a pastry brush,
then gently wipe them with a damp cloth. The only exception is morels, which harbour grit and need to be rinsed. As a general rule, mushrooms need to be blasted with heat in a generous amount of fat to brown them, due to their high water content. Pan-frying is my preferred cooking method, and should include plenty of butter and a generous sprinkling of salt to help extract the water. Once you’ve got the fat really hot, add the mushrooms (making sure not to crowd them) and cook, undisturbed, until one side is nicely browned, then turn and repeat on the other side. Resist the urge to stir them and you’ll achieve perfect caramelisation. Once they’re cooked, in my opinion it’s best to let wild mushrooms speak for themselves. My favourite way to enjoy them is on toast with butter, crispy sage and possibly a fried or poached egg. Anything pasta-, polenta- or risotto-related works incredibly well too. If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, pan-fried girolles or chanterelles work wonderfully with peas and onions braised in a little chicken stock, and wild mushrooms make an excellent addition to broths of most kinds. ‘My new home gave me a whole new (crafty!) life’ Like many of us, Anna-Lisa De’Ath yearned for a complete change of lifestyle, then a dream property in the West Country led to a creative, happy fresh start WORDS KERRY FOWLER | PHOTOGRAPHY RACHEL WARNE

ometimes the stars align – even if not quite how you’d planned. For years, Anna-Lisa De’Ath daydreamed about leaving behind the daily slog of work and commuting, to run craft workshops from a little place in the country. A few animals and a vegetable plot were part of the picture and her plan was a solo venture: a brave new life.
‘Throughout my career I always had it in the back of my mind that one day I would have a smallholding in the West Country,’ says Anna-Lisa, an editor and consultant. ‘My parents had an allotment, so I was into
growing my own fruit and veg from an early age. I’d go foraging with my dad for chestnuts and berries, and dream of having chickens and goats – out of the question at my parents’ council house in the suburbs of London!’ About four years ago, Anna-Lisa was returning from a work trip to Devon and decided to stop over at a friend’s house on the Somerset border: ‘We went to a pub and I got chatting to a local chap called Tim, who, I found out, is an amazing cabinetmaker. There was an instant spark between us and, to cut a long story short, over time we became an item – albeit with Tim in Somerset and me still in London. As luck would have it, he shared my dream of having a smallholding and running arts-and-crafts courses. So we set out to make that our reality!’ The 126 housebeautiful.com/uk
happy chance of their meeting led to their search for a home that would match their joint 12-point tick list. Then, after a couple of years, serendipity played its part again. ‘A house came up that Tim had known and loved since being a child. He used to call it the ‘Pointy Palace’ because of its little turrets, and when we went to see it I burst into tears because I had such an emotional pull to it,’ says Anna-Lisa. ‘With stunning views over the Blackdown Hills, it had been built by its owner in 1937, and they were the only family to have lived there. As well as the pointy turrets, it had a greenhouse, an old orchard, a redundant kitchen garden and, crucially, outbuildings for Tim’s carpentry, and an old studio, very down at heel, where I could run craft courses.’ Anna-Lisa’s enthusiasm for crafts began as early as her passion for growing, and she is never without a project: ‘I went to art school and have always loved making,’ she says. ‘A few years ago I went to an arts-and-crafts workshop in Whitstable in Kent and was invited back to teach. I loved the energy: people coming together, new friendships being made as they learnt new skills, everyone helping each other.’ As soon as she had the keys to their new house in her hand, the hard graft began – with the exterior taking priority: getting the derelict studio into shape (even the concrete floor had

completely degraded), setting up a rainbow veg patch and working on the outbuildings. The old kitchen, complete with Aga, was the warm hub of the home, the faded-glam pink bathroom essential for cleaning up at the end of the day. And all the while Anna-Lisa was planning the array of craft courses she would run. By the beginning of 2020 all was moving apace. Having left London for good and set up home in her new property, she had resigned from her job, ready to go freelance. Then Covid hit, putting paid to her crafty aspirations. It was hugely disappointing but, as it turned out, the lull gave Anna-Lisa valuable time to research further, grow more and put her plans together for the following year. ‘I did a trial run with friends and got their feedback on what they’d be interested in,’ she says. ‘My crafty Instagram connections also helped me get a feel for what’s current. I began to realise I wanted the workshops to be in tune with the seasons and rely on natural materials – people have become much more connected with nature through lockdown, and also want to try their hand at making and creating. ‘My workshops now include beginners’ lino printing inspired by the nature in our four acres; visible and creative mending – a great way to extend the life of your clothes; twig weaving, where you use twigs to create a loom and weave with recycled wool or scraps of fabric (very tactile and mindful because it’s a slow process); and making Christmas decorations from foraged natural materials. And that’s just to mention a few!’ Her studio has been transformed into a welcoming, creative environment; her vegetable patch is growing apace; and she keeps chickens, as well as geese that she raised from goslings. Two baby goats are arriving soon, and she’s also fostering a couple of alpacas. ‘The past few years have brought such huge change,’ Anna-Lisa says. ‘Selling the place I lived in for 20 years, getting engaged to the man of my dreams, buying our home and setting up my workshops. What I did before seems very distant now. I can’t believe I spent so many years working ridiculous hours and facing the commute every day. I always had a dream at the back of my mind but I’m not sure I ever thought this would really be my life. I am amazed!’ HB

I’m never going to make pots of money but I do have a lovely quality of life. I step out of my back door into this amazing landscape, am greeted by animals that are pleased to see me, and eat food I’ve grown myself. It’s the best of all worlds!’

hen the gate swings open into Nic Howard’s courtyard garden, there’s a heightened sense of anticipation as a delightful living space is revealed, alive with beautiful plants and original furnishings. ‘If you have a small garden, you have to make every centimetre count. And I really love that challenge,’ says Nic. It was in 2011 that Nic first saw Little Orchards, the Edwardian cottage in Outwood, Surrey, that’s now his home. He was attracted by the long boundary brick wall and potential to create a fully enclosed courtyard by building a new stretch of curving wall connecting to the cottage and driveway. ‘That’s what sold me the house – I’d always longed for a walled garden,’ he recalls. But despite being a garden designer who’s undertaken many demanding projects over the years, he found his own garden to be the most difficult. ‘It’s because I like so many different styles and plants, so I had to identify my natural, inherent approach and stay true to that,’ he explains. Though Nic loves modern design, with its clean lines and minimalist approach, he decided not to opt for it in his garden. ‘I’d have eventually become bored with it,’ he says. Instead, he went for a more timeless look, melding contemporary styling with elements of shabby chic, such as a weathered dining table and assorted chairs.
A PASSION FOR PLANTS The garden unfolds as a series of linked, eyecatching spaces that create lovely views when framed by the kitchen or sitting room windows. ‘I look out on the courtyard, so it’s important to have something worth looking at all year round,’ explains Nic. Lawn is banished in favour of Kota Blue limestone, leaving more room for abundant, textural planting, with a subtle colour palette of greens and whites in the shadier areas and pops of colour in sunny spots. There’s no doubting Nic’s passion for plants. ‘A perfect garden appears effortless, but it’s no lucky accident – you have to attend to
DESIGNING A COURTYARD ONCE NIC HAD BUILT AN ADDITIONAL STRETCH OF curving wall to enclose the courtyard, the floor area was like an irregular triangle, measuring 11m x 6m on the longest sides. He then replaced the crazy paving with limestone slabs and decking, squared to the cottage. ‘It’s good to set off a design from the most dominant feature. Here, it’s the cottage,’ he explains. As a result, the decking runs parallel to the cottage wall, meeting the garden room at an angle. ‘But this looks fine, whereas creating an angle with the building wouldn’t,’ he adds. Both decking and paving run diagonally to the long boundary wall. ‘When you look from the garden room into the furthest rounded corner, you have a long sight line that gives an impression of greater length, making the courtyard feel larger,’ says Nic. A mirror has cleverly been placed on the wall, adding to an illusion of space. With the hard landscaping in place, Nic disguised the garden’s irregular shape by planting deep borders adjacent to the long wall and curving section, training the climbing rose ‘Blush Noisette’ to grow up it. At the furthest corner, where the walls don’t meet at a right angle, he has trained evergreen climbing plants. Finally, black-painted walls have the effect of making the boundary disappear and are a lovely foil to the planting.

the smallest of details, and above all cherish the plants,’ he believes. ‘And in such a limited space, every one has to earn its keep.’ Among his many prized specimens are a fiendishly spiny, redberried, broad-leaved cockspur thorn and a winter-flowering cherry ‘Autumnalis Rosea’. ‘It starts blossoming in November and looks gorgeous all winter long.’ At the base of its trunk are ‘Garnet’ penstemons, a dwarf purple verbena ‘Lollipop’, and a blue haze of lesser calamint ‘Blue Cloud’, a magnet for bees. Adding autumnal tints, there’s a red-leaved Japanese acer and an American redbud ‘Forest Pansy’, with its glossy heart-shaped, purple leaves. Hydrangeas certainly work hard here – both ‘Annabelle’, with its huge greenish white flowerheads, and ‘Limelight’, which fades to white and pink with age. At their feet are shade-loving white Japanese anemones, offset against foliage of varying green hues and textures – honey spurge, rodgersia, hosta and box. Softening the paving are white woolly lamb’s ears leaves and waves of golden Japanese forest grass. ‘I love its fountain effect along the edges,’ says Nic.
CREATING ATMOSPHERE Extending into half of a double garage attached to the east-facing wall enabled Nic to create a 2.5m x 6m summerhouse. ‘It’s added another dimension, and it’s lovely at night to look across the courtyard and see another room lit up.’ Outdoor illumination is a vital element, and Nic finds that stringing up LED garden festoon bulbs is both wonderfully effective and inexpensive. ‘The problem with installing ambient lighting is that it wouldn’t light the table so atmospherically,’ he explains. The lighting is plugged into a waterproof outdoor socket and placed on an automatic timer. ‘I don’t have blinds or curtains, so night lighting

O N T H E R I G H T PAT H Garden paths link, lead and lure, not only serving a practical purpose, but also offering great scope for imaginative designs and planting. Carefully thought-out paths strike a balance between necessity, style, and blending into the setting. In a formal layout, paths tend to be straight, well-directed and potentially dull, but this is avoidable by either zig-zagging the route, or by including inspired planting along the way. Linear thoroughfares benefit from the definition of an edging, whereas informal, winding paths naturally peter out into planting. The choice of surface for a path has considerable impact visually because it can imply either movement or a static feel. For example, a long, straight path can be broken up with brick pavers to maintain a sense of movement, until reaching a place to pause, such as a bench. ‘You can use hard landscaping to give a visual cue on the ground as to a change of use,’ says Nic. When it came to a single step between the garden room deck and main courtyard, Nic changed the material from one to the other. ‘Had I used the same material, the step would not have stood out so clearly,’ he explains. extends the view from indoors into the garden.’ Over the years, he’s added furnishings, such as the Adirondack-style loungers and a retro open-wirework chair, unearthing many characterful items from reclamation yards and antiques and collectors fairs. ‘Keep features, materials and planting simple – in a small space, a few larger-format items look better than lots of small fiddly pieces,’ Nic advises. Most recently, he bought a steel, log-burning chimenea from Aldi. ‘I originally had a low bowl-shaped firepit, but it became a trip hazard.’ However, the chimenea is unobtrusive, and having the fire halfway up means it can warm up anyone sitting at the table.
CHILDHOOD LOVE Nic’s grandmother was a keen gardener who lost no time in involving her twin grandsons. ‘We were barely four years old, and she would ask us to hoe between her lines of bedding plants – a patriotic blend of red geraniums, white alyssum and blue lobelia,’ he recalls. As Nic grew up, so did his love of gardening, leading to a degree in landscape and garden design at Writtle University College in Essex. Since establishing his own design studio, he hasn’t looked back. His own garden never stands still, largely because he regularly introduces new elements. ‘When your plot’s tiny, you want to keep re-inventing the space,’ Nic points out. ‘But it’s always manageable, and there’s something so comforting about a walled garden.’ HB Little Orchards is due to open in aid of the National Garden Scheme (ngs.org.uk) on 12 September 2021 (11am-5pm). ibrant, pretty and easy to grow, asters – also known as Michaelmas daisies – are emerging from their role as supporting players in the herbaceous border to share star billing with other late-summer perennials. And with such a wide variety to choose from, there’s one for every garden and position. Low-growing varieties, including ‘SmallNess’ and ‘Lady in Blue’, are ideal at the front of the border or even in pots. Meanwhile, the billowing mounds of A amellus and A x frikartii look wonderful weaving among other perennials, and the tall, back-of-the-border varieties, including ‘Barr’s Pink’ and ‘Andenken an Alma Pötschke’, have real visual impact. Though asters are long-lived, they do need regular division to flower well, and old clumps can also be badly weakened by mildew. So, if you have any sad and sparse examples languishing in your beds, dig them up and move on to something more exciting. Nurseries have noticed the renewed interest in asters and are raising

an ever-expanding range of varieties. When planted among grasses and other late performers – such as rudbeckia, persicaria, actaea, perovskia, salvia and gaura – the abundant flowerheads of asters will add oomph to your borders and attract a host of beneficial insects, especially bees. Although they have multiple names, it’s probably easiest to stick to thinking of them all as asters or Michaelmas daisies. The species and garden cultivars that originate in North America have previously been known as New England Asters (A novae-angliae) and New York Asters (A novi-belgii), but their botanical name is now Symphyotrichum, and they’re increasingly labelled as such. This is useful to know when looking through catalogues, visiting nurseries or buying online but, let’s face it, ‘aster’ or ‘Michaelmas daisy’ is a lot easier to say, and everyone will know what you mean. Luckily, the European and Asian varieties, including A x frikartii and A amellus, remain as asters.

M
aris Peer potatoes grow well in pots in autumn. This all-round salad-type variety has a firm creamy yellow flesh and superb flavour and is good for boiling, roasting and mashing. Plant up to early September for a crop in late October, or leave them in the pot if you want to enjoy them at Christmas. For best results, plant in full sun.
SECRETS OF SUCCESS » Use a pot at least 40cm deep and wide, with drainage holes in the base. » Add a layer of potting compost or a garden soil/compost mix. A layer 10cm thick is enough for 40cm pots. » Plant one to three tubers per pot, each with about 10cm of space. » As the foliage develops, add further compost or soil until the container is full to within 5cm of the top. » Keep well watered and feed with a general-purpose liquid fertiliser. » Bring them indoors on cold nights and return outdoors during the day.
SUSTAINABLE CONTAINER GARDENING
You might think a small container garden wouldn’t offer many opportunities to be environmentally friendly, but think again! With a few minor concessions, they can be a really sustainable option.
» Choose drought-tolerant plants
Conserving water in the garden is a challenge, especially in summer, but you can significantly reduce water consumption by going for drought-tolerant plants. » Reuse or recycle your old plant pots
Once you’ve finished with them, donate them to local nurseries or allotments, or give to someone you know who grows from seed. » Use ecofriendly options If you usually start your garden plants from seed, kitchen
towel tubes cut into small sections make a good alternative to plastic seed trays. If you’re going to use pots, opt for biodegradable and compostable ones. And there’s no need to buy new: choose recycled objects such as dolly tubs or vintage garden containers from reclamation yards or car boot sales. » Plant a mini forest Create a forest in your pots or window boxes to release oxygen and offset carbon dioxide. Miniature versions of Douglas fir, spruce, true fir, beech and maple release the most oxygen.
