A Welcome from the Editor It likely comes as no surprise that I’m writing this note from my home, where I’m cooped up alongside my husband and children in these unsettling Rachel Hardage Barrett times.

There are a lot of E D ITO R - I N - C H I E F unknowns, but two @ R AC H E L H A R DAG E B A R R E T T things are certain: I’m (gulp) a lousy homeschooler, and my husband should not have bought the bulk bag of peanut M&M’s on his grocery run. On a brighter note, I have learned to make bread in the Dutch oven (there’s a simple step-by-step tutorial at countryliving.com/easy-no-knead-breadrecipe), gone on more neighborhood walks (so much good chalk art!), and stumbled upon a new evening “porch party” tradition with my family, which has helped establish some semblance of a routine within these otherwise amorphous weeks. I’ve also found that getting outside has been good for the soul. This issue is devoted to finding ways to embrace the outdoors at home, whether it’s beautifying the backyard or enjoying more meals on the patio. Because if you’ve gotta bloom where you’re planted, a little sunshine sure helps.

Many dogs are curious enough to sniff or try to catch a wasp in their mouths, and while allergic reactions to wasps and bees are very common, they can cause rapid swelling of face and muzzle, which can typically be addressed with a dose of Benadryl. Consult with your veterinarian for the appropriate amount of Benadryl to give your pooch.

A Short History of...

THE TENNIS BRACELET While the diamond line bracelet style has been around since the 1920s, it reached a new level of popularity in the 1970s and ’80s, when tennis champion (and style icon herself) Chris Evert wore one during competition. When her bracelet flew off her wrist mid-match at the 1987 U.S. Open, the incident prompted a court-wide search and solidified the jewelry’s iconic status.

THE TENNIS SKORT

Balls & Canisters Although the modern version of tennis dates to the early 18th century, the balls we know today only became possible after the invention of vulcanized rubber in 1844. Early makers included recognizable names like Wright & Ditson, Dunlop Warwick, and Wilson Sporting Goods (the latter is credited with introducing the standard three-ball tube in 1926).

Parchment-lined cardboard tubes ( 1 ) offered a frustratingly short shelf life before balls lost their bounce and were

soon replaced with pressurized metal cans ( 2 ) that promised greater longevity and protection against damage. Keep an eye out for WWIIera cans ( 3 ), when cardboard made a comeback due to metal shortages and the enclosed “victory balls” were made from synthetic rubber. Cans’ worth varies (from $20 to $150) depending on condition and age, but keep one thing in mind while you search: An unopened can is always more valuable.

Today’s ultracomfortable uniforms owe everything to the female players of the early 20th century, who swapped stifling ankle-length skirts for thengroundbreaking culottes and skorts. Spanish player Lilí Alvarez debuted the look during her 1931 Wimbledon match, and other players followed suit, most notably French tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen (shown above, in 1935).

THE LACOSTE POLO Ten years after 1920s French tennis champion René Lacoste was dubbed “ The Alligator” by an American journalist, he launched his very own brand of apparel. The first item? A classic white knit polo with a simple crocodile logo. The brand went international in the 1950s and has since become a worldwide symbol of elegance both on and off the court.

Rackets While technology has evolved dramatically since French company Babolat invented racket strings in 1875, the basic shape and structure of the racket has remained mostly the same. Wooden rackets by brands like Bancroft ( 1 ), Spalding, and Slazenger were common throughout the 20th century until aluminum and graphite alternatives popped up in the 1960s and ’70s. Most midcentury rackets are affordable ($25–$30), but watch for special-edition collaborations ( 2 ), which can snatch more depending on the player (Chris Evert and Jack Kramer are especially coveted).

French Open Also called “Roland-Garros” (for a French aviator), this Parisian clay-court tournament started in 1891 and swings into action again this fall. Fun fact: The official poster, designed annually since 1980, has become its own collectible.

Trophies Look beyond the prestigious gilded prizes handed out at major tournaments (they would take up way too much shelf space, anyway), and hunt for vintage awards from smaller local leagues and school competitions. Older trophies from the 1920s ( 1 , 2 ) are often silver-plated and boast higher value (plan to shell out $100 plus for a find like the tiny six-incher at top right). Midcentury awards ( 3, 4 ) utilized a wider variety of materials (think wood, Bakelite, and stone) and often feature spirited toppers depicting players in action.

STAN SMITH SNEAKERS In 1965, Adidas launched the “Haillet” sneaker, named after and worn by French champion Robert Haillet. When Haillet retired from the sport, the company turned to Stan Smith, an up-and-coming American, to become the face of the same shoe in 1971. As Smith’s tennis career took off and the sneaker gained popularity on the court, Adidas

officially renamed it the “Stan Smith” in 1978 and added the trademark miniature portrait of Smith to the shoe’s green tongue.

Despite technological advances that have since made the shoe obsolete for competition, it remains a mainstream fashion favorite (more than 50 million pairs have been sold since its launch) worn by athletes, celebrities, and teenagers alike.

There’s no shortage of publications packed with tips and tricks claiming to boost your game. Look for advice from bona fide experts and famous players like Arthur Ashe ( 5 ), or opt for a more lighthearted approach from cultural icons like Mr. Peanut ( 6 ). Most can be found for under $50, while older finds from respected sources (think brands like Slazenger or Wright & Ditson) can go for more than $120.

The camera featured a satellite symbol on the front as a nod to the then-early days of the American space program and came in several colors such as red, turquoise, gray, and beige. “Considered a classic, the Savoy was a simple camera for both young budding photographers or someone of

my current age,” says Marsha.

“It used 6-by-6-cm format film (which I think you can still get online today) and had a fixed focus lens, and there were no exposure adjustments.” Fun fact: When the Mercury Comet automobile was introduced, the Savoy box camera was a consolation prize during dealerships’ new-car giveaways.

Appraiser Bene Raia tells us that your treasure is a cruise ship souvenir doll from the 1940s-’60s. “Made by the hundreds, these dolls were sold to cruise-ship passengers, with the name on the hat—in your case, STOCKHOLM—denoting the cruise’s destination,” says Bene. She adds that several companies made these dolls, so without a label, it’s hard to know the maker. Many were similar to sailor dolls created by maker Norah Wellings, but those dolls were always marked and are much more valuable because of their quality. As novelty gifts, souvenir dolls were not made to last, so the fact that yours appears to be in great condition makes it more valuable.

“In the 1930s, metal porch gliders started appearing on porches as an alternative to the porch swing,” says appraiser Bene Raia. “As outdoor living and backyard barbecues became popular in the 1950s–’60s, which is the era of your midcentury metal porch glider, they were manufactured in great quantity

Because most pieces were unmarked, it’s challenging to know the actual manufacturer of your piece, but two main producers of these vintage gliders to note were Alabama Manufacturing Company (aka Birmingham Stove & Range Co.) and J.R. Bunting Company of Philadelphia, later known as the Bunting Metal Glider Company.

Gliders are more valuable than the motel-style chairs of the same era because they are harder to find. Bene adds that condition is also a major factor when it comes to pricing, although some collectors don’t seem to mind a little rust.

“The habit of shaving ice has been around for a very long time—maybe even as early as 7 A.D.,” says appraiser Bene Raia. “Once ice became a commodity, inventions to manually shave ice started to be manufactured, and the tools became a staple at most ice-cream shops and soda fountains. Based on its size, your late 1920s–early 1940s Swan cast-iron ice shaver or planer is an example of that.” The machine was simple to operate. Basically, a big chunk of ice was placed on the metal spikes, and then, by turning the wheel, the ice was shaved to produce an icy slush onto which a choice of flavoring could be added.

Antiques Roadshow’s Marsha Bemko checked in with appraiser Nicholas Dawes of Heritage Auctions.

He tells us that cased picnic sets like your 1950s Coracle Picnic Set—fully equipped with sandwich boxes, flatware, bone china plates and cups, and a tea pot—were mostly made in the U.K. and then retailed in the U.S. and beyond. “These were made in significant numbers coincident with the growth in the production of automobiles, commonly used for family leisure trips from about 1925 into the 1970s,” says Nicholas. “The earliest examples, typically in wicker cases, tend to have a higher value.”

Remove the metal lid from the ring band of a wide-mouth 16-ounce jar, and trace on a piece of cardboard; cut out and use a hole punch to make a hole large enough to fit a straw. Cut a piece of berry-print fabric 1/2 inch larger than the cardboard round. Coat one side of the cardboard with spray adhesive and center fabric on top; fold excess fabric around edge and tack down with hot-glue. Cut out fabric above the hole in the cardboard. Insert in ring band and add straw.

The homeowners made sure the house was situated to take full advantage of the lot’s spectacular views.

When they first bought the property, they stood on ladders trying to figure out the best vantage point. The ladders have since been swapped for a deck filled with an abundance of outdoor furniture (world market.com) where friends and family can hang out and enjoy drinks.

Create a warm welcome.

Inspired by the iconic red cottages in Stockholm, Sweden, the homeowners opted to bring a bit of Scandinavia to Michigan, but with a Maple Island twist. “Initially, we were going to paint the house red,” says Steve, “but that didn’t fit the vernacular of the island.” The solution: incorporating a bold color (Heritage Red by Benjamin Moore) for the windows and front door, then matching the gray stain to the bark of the surrounding trees. “We wanted it to feel like it was part of the hill,” says the designer.

Specifically, on Maple Island, at a charming gray cottage with red-rimmed windows and a matching front door that are cheery exclamation points on the woodsy banks of Magician Lake. The delightful digs serve as a summertime getaway for Chicago residents Megan Seeley, her husband, and their three kids (ages 6, 8, and 10). When Megan found the spot f ive years ago, it was little more than a patch of trees on a hilltop, but it was located only two hours from home, making it the ideal spot for a summer getaway. “We knew we could create a space that felt special and welcoming,” Megan says. She also knew just who to call to make that dream a reality: longtime friends Steve Somogyi and Filip Malyszko of Chicago firm Steve + Filip Design (steveandfilipdesign.com).

Working with Scott Moody of Gatz Construction (gatzconstruction.com), Steve and Filip designed the 2,200-square-foot house from the ground up, then filled it with bright hues and whimsical pieces guaranteed to put smiles on the faces of friends and extended family who love to visit. On top of pops of red, yellow, green, and blue, the designers peppered in playful elements, such as a salvaged barber pole in the entry, an antique-radioturned-media-cabinet in the living room, and an old-school (but functional!) rotary-dial phone in the kitchen.

“We searched high and low through the local antiques stores and junk shops,” says Steve. “In a nutshell, we wanted it to feel very casual, very lighthearted, and as vibrant as the land and water that surround it.”

Have fun with furniture.

Megan took a “the more the merrier” approach to color and pattern in the living room, piling on fun fabrics ranging from “Vegetable Tree” (svenskttenn.se) on a pair of armchairs, a bright red sofa (leeindustries.com), plaid throws (wayfair.com), gingham pillows (unison home.com), striped throw pillows (jaysonhome.com), and flat-weave rugs (momeni.com).

Embrace dripproof materials.

“A lot of country kitchens would have a farmhouse table in the middle of the space, so we wanted to give it that vibe,” says Steve.

Seat a big crowd.

Megan and her designers took a hunt-and-gather approach to sourcing the mismatched dining room chairs (above). “We kept an eye out at our local antiques shops, and when something special came in, we would grab it,” she says.

Steve and Filip freshened up the chairs with linseed oil but otherwise left them as-is, nicks, chips, and all.

Says Steve, “It’s nice to have chairs in different sizes for people of all ages.”

Bring on the whimsy.

In addition to the antique barber pole, which stands tall over Jesse and goldendoodle Rocky, there are fun elements in every room, including an old emergency fire ladder in the living room, a grand valet chair in the dining room, and the brightred rotary phone in the kitchen (opposite).

lexis Garrett was anything but chill in her pursuit of her current home. As soon as a friend told the interior designer (alexisgarrett.com) about a listing for a ramshackle 1920s Tudor in surfing outpost Leucadia, California, Alexis had a feeling. So she started making calls— to her real estate agent and cousin, Lanz Correia, for guidance; to her mother for a bridge loan; to her babysitter for help with sons Henry and Conrad; and to her husband, Ross, for a ride to the open house that was scheduled for that very afternoon. Thankfully, the calls were not in vain. “We get to the house and for whatever reason, Ross and Lanz are exploring the house by themselves, and I’m exploring the house by myself,” says Alexis. “Suddenly, I’m weeping. Four hours ago, this house was not even on my radar.”

Luckily, Ross, president of Surfline, was riding the same wave of emotion.

“He took me by the arm and said, ‘We have to do everything in our power to make this our home.’ ” By 3 p.m. that very day, Alexis, Ross, and Lanz were huddled in their Prius, strategizing an offer. They came up with a number, and Alexis got to work on a heartfelt letter to the owners. After two sleepless nights, they finally heard the offer was accepted.

Through all the highs and lows, the state of their 2,000-square-foot cottage never made them flinch. “It wasn’t hard for me to see the potential, but we were given a two-inch binder from the inspector,” says Alexis. “I will never forget, as he handed over the binder, dust in his hair from the crawl spaces, he said, ‘Nice house.’ I must be risk averse because it didn’t scare me one bit.”

Even after extensive renovations, some quirks remain. Because there’s no insulation and the redwood walls are only two inches thick, the family is bundled up in layers of puffy jackets and Ugg boots most mornings. But they’ve leaned into surf-camp living—christening the house Camp Burgundy thanks to the hue of the paneled walls that Alexis eventually painted a bright white. She also layered in summer-inspired finds— think surfboards, Pendleton blankets, old pennants, and vintage collections.

“Ross and I grew up at the beach, and we’re so fortunate that we’re able to give our boys that experience,” says Alexis.

“Now they surf, too.”

istoric home, small-town charm, within walking distance of town—these were just a few of the “musts” on Sarah Copeland’s wish list when she and husband András Gipp began their house hunt back in 2010. So the cookbook author (edibleliving.com) was delighted to find a cottage in the Catskills, New York, that checked all the boxes. Boasting a cheerful yellow front door and surrounded by a picket fence, the original structure served as Town Hall in the early 1900s and is just a short walk away from the local library and general store. The property also came with a roughly 250-year-old barn, perfect for András’s woodworking business, Hudson Workshop (hudsonwork shop.com). “The spirit of the house was wonderful. I could feel right away that it was a happy home,” says Sarah.

While András took on the challenges of asbestos siding and full-on renovation, Sarah tended to the yard, planting kale, Swiss chard, berries, and more. Along the way, the family (including Greta, age 9, and Màtyàs, age 5) settled into small-town life and created their own traditions, including taking in the VFW’s Memorial Day parade from the comfort of their front yard. Every year, after waving to passing band members and eating candy tossed by the pint-size Poppy Princess, friends convene for a bountiful post-parade picnic.

1. Butter two bowls. Butter two 9-by-5-inch loaf pans. Heat milk and 1 cup water in a small saucepan to 100°F to 110°F; remove from heat. Add yeast and 2 tablespoons sugar. Let sit until foamy, 3 to 5 minutes.

2. Whisk together flour, potato starch, 2 teaspoons salt, remaining 4 tablespoons sugar, and yeast mixture in a bowl. Beat with an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook on medium speed until a loose dough forms, 1 to 2 minutes.

Add 3/4 cup butter and mix until fully incorporated and dough slaps against the bowl and is silky smooth, 3 to 4 minutes (alternatively, transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead by hand until it is smooth as baby’s skin).

3. Divide dough into two equal portions (about 1 pound 12 ounces each) and transfer to prepared bowls. Brush tops with about 1 tablespoon butter each and cover tightly with plastic wrap.

Set in a warm, but not hot, place (such as inside a microwave or on top of an unheated oven) until doubled in size, 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

4. Stir together sugar, cinnamon, 1 egg, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt in a bowl. Working with one portion of dough at a time, roll on a lightly floured surface into a 6-by-18-inch-long rectangle.

10 large stalks deep-red rhubarb, diagonally sliced (about 5 cups) 2/3

cup pure maple syrup

1 quart whole-milk Greek or plain yogurt, for serving Toasted Many-Seed Granola (see recipe below)

Combine rhubarb, maple syrup, and 2 tablespoons water in a large skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, over low heat until syrup is just bubbly, 1 to 2 minutes. Turn off heat, cover loosely with a lid or parchment paper, and let sit until rhubarb is soft but still holds its color and shape, 4 to 6 minutes. Cool completely. Serve with yogurt and granola alongside.

Toasted Many-Seed Granola WORKING TIME 15 minutes TOTAL TIME 40 minutes MAKES 8 cups

Try this sprinkled over ice cream or pound cake with whipped cream. Store in an airtight container up to 1 month.

Cooking spray 6 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 1 cup nuts (such as almonds, walnuts, or pistachios), chopped 1/2

cup pure maple syrup

teaspoon ground ginger (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease 2 baking sheets. Combine all ingredients and, if desired, ginger in a bowl. Transfer to prepared baking sheets. Bake, stirring once and rotating pans halfway through, until golden brown, 18 to 24 minutes. Cool
