EDITOR’S LETTER IT’S GREAT TO BE BACK

While on maternity leave, I loved experiencing Home Beautiful as a reader. Each month, I got to discover new homes, great interiors and plenty of wonderful advice – I can’t thank Katrina and the team enough for creating such beautiful issues while I was out. My time as a reader also made me think of you. Is there anything you would love to see more of in Home Beautiful? Or, is there something you enjoy that you’d like us to keep doing? Drop us a line at homebeautiful@ aremedia.com.au – or reach out to me on Instagram @ellelovelock. This issue, we focus on two of my favourite areas of the house: the kitchen and bathroom. From page 151, you’ll find 100 brilliant ideas for both of these rooms. My favourite is to extend your home’s style into the bathroom (and kitchen, for that matter). I think it’s so important to create a cohesive interior scheme, even if it’s a simple detail like the colour palette, repetition of shape, or using the same metal finish for taps as you would for door handles and drawer pulls. Speaking of creating continuity in the home, now is the perfect time to overhaul your outdoor spaces and get them ready for spring and summer. One of the best ways to update your home’s exterior is with lighting, and we’ve compiled a fabulous guide to getting it right on page 134. Not only is lighting a practical feature, it will also enhance your garden, highlighting trees and pathways. And it doesn’t have to be expensive either. Solar options don’t require wiring and can be easily installed in rentals, too. Sometimes it really is as simple as sticking a solar light in the ground! If you’re looking for easy but effective decorating ideas, flip to page 37 for our bedlinen update. In nature-inspired hues, our edit will bring the feeling of spring into your home. After all, nothing marks the beginning of a new season quite like a fresh set of sheets.

3 LEAFY LOUNGES

How did you start in home and interiors magazines? “Having written for and edited women’s lifestyle mags for many years, I was lucky enough to combine that experience with my passion for homes and interiors.” What is your favourite section of HB? “The homes, as I’m incredibly nosy and love being inspired by people’s furniture and design ideas.” Tell us about your own home-decorating style. “I mix old furniture with contemporary style and combine neutrals with a flourish of duck-egg blue and teals. I love prints too; a Swedish sofa I had recovered in a Matthew Williamson design is a cherished piece. But I also dream of an all-white home – I think I need a beach house.” Where is your dream Australian destination? “I’d like to visit Kakadu as I’ve never been.” Do you have any DIY projects you are working on? “I’m restoring and restyling a beautiful old sideboard – that probably would have gone to landfill. During lockdown last year I started my side business – @bristleandtint – creating one-off pieces of furniture.” Where’s your favourite place to relax at home? “In bed with a cup of tea on Sunday morning, enveloped in our new super-king quilt and Bed Threads linen.” What would you cook from our ‘Entertain’ pages? “I’d like to eat more fish so the whole roasted fish with sauce gribiche, which looks delicious!” (page 146)

What are the key furniture trends for spring and summer in 2021? Anthony: “Less is more – that is always a good rule. For summer, I have tried to take inspiration from modern desert interiors, where clean forms accented with unique finishes, fabrics or pieces push you towards a more everlasting interior aesthetic.” What is the best decorating or styling advice you’ve ever received? “My grandfather told me, ‘The most expensive item is often the cheapest.’ He talked about how purchasing a higher-quality product would not only bring you more pleasure during its use – it would also last the longest.” Who are your biggest influences? “Mid-century designers like Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier. More recently, European designers are inspiring me, such as Joseph Dirand and Christian Liaigre. Their classic and clean approach to interiors is always refreshing and everlasting. Inspiration is all around, if you look. You don’t need top designers to inspire.” If walls could talk, what would yours say about your interior style? “When I do get to execute my style, I will, of course, let my wife do anything she wants! I get to show my style at work, therefore, Coco Republic best represents my style.” What is your favourite piece from your latest collection? “My favourite is the CR Essentials ‘Atelier Slipper’ chair. It’s a sculptural element in a room and a comfortable piece. The perfect combination.” Visit cocorepublic.com.au.

back to earth INSPIRED BY THE RUGGED SURROUNDS OF HER COASTAL LOCALE, SEASONED CERAMICIST CATHERINE TATE DIGS DEEP FOR HER ART Words SUE WHEELER Photography BRIGID ARNOTT

THE EDIT TOP LEFT: “It looks like you could have chopped through the rocks and this is what you’d find,” says Catherine of her primordial-looking vessels. BOTTOM LEFT: Like an artwork itself, an enchanting display of glaze testers adorns the wall. BELOW: Catherine intuitively adds the finishing touches to a new piece. BOTTOM MIDDLE: The artist’s trusty tools are never far away. BOTTOM RIGHT: “I use different coloured glazes and allow some of the clay to show through,” says Catherine, of her design-influenced works. OPPOSITE: Catherine, pictured here at Claypool studio in Sydney’s Botany.

AT A GLANCE Who: Catherine Tate, Sydney-based ceramicist. What she does: Takes inspiration from both the rocky terrain of her local beaches and her urban surroundings. Where: Sydney’s eastern suburbs, NSW. Why she does it: “I love that clay has come from the earth,” says Catherine. “And I love purely focusing on doing something creative with my hands.” Visit: catherinetate.com.au; artgalleryondarling.com.au. ou could say that former magazine fashion editor and graphic designer Catherine Tate has the digital world to thank for unearthing her passion and finding her inner potter. Twelve years ago, when she and her husband ran an advertising business, the digital processes left her longing to get back to something more physically creative. “I needed an antidote to all the computer work; to strip things back to making something with my hands again,” explains Catherine, who remembers when design was more tactile and involved “actually cutting things up”. She’d always wanted to be a painter, so she found a class that ran while her three children were at school, but, in a twist of fate, the course was full, and they suggested trying ceramics instead. “I said ‘Okay, why not?’, and after the first lesson I fell in love with clay and was hooked,” she says, smiling at the thought. “I began building large, coiled pots and I was so focused on creating with my hands and nothing else that three hours felt like three minutes. It’s just you and a piece of clay – so simple and satisfying.” A couple of years on and still styling shoots for a living, Catherine studied ceramics at TAFE; spending three years honing her style and technical know-how. Fast forward to her first exhibition at Bondi Pavilion, Catherine was offered a teaching position at Waverley Woollahra Art School, where she runs classes as well as those at Claypool in Botany, a studio she also uses herself. “It’s rewarding to put people in touch with their creative side and help them to produce something they’re happy with and makes them feel good,” says Catherine, who is also one of 12 artists who collectively run the Art Gallery on Darling in Balmain, where they each sell their work and have solo exhibitions.

34

HOMEBEAUTIFUL.COM.AU

Catherine’s striking pieces are inspired by the breathtaking beaches of Sydney’s eastern suburbs where she’s lived for 30 years. “I love geology and I get plenty of opportunity to study the rocks and rock pools when I’m walking our dalmatian Ted along the rugged headlands around Malabar,” says the artist, whose blue, white and earthy palette also evokes the stunning coastline. “I’ve always taken pictures of different textures in the environment and love how nature and the elements change the appearance of things.” Another intriguing aspect of her work is how it expresses her different creative personalities. “Because of my background, I have my ‘graphic designer’s head’ and my ‘artist’s head,’ and I jump from one to the other,” says Catherine. “For a while I work in a considered way, creating ‘designed’ pieces with strong, simple shapes, but then my brain thinks ‘I need to flip to the other side and create pieces with more texture and spontaneity.’ That’s when I become more free-flowing and intuitive, which brings another element and freshness to the work. It also means it’s always evolving, which is how I like it.” Catherine also loves experimenting with glazes, which rarely cover the whole piece, allowing the texture of the ‘groggy’ clay to show through. “Glazes are also intuitive because you can’t predict the result 100 per cent,” she adds. “It’s not an ‘accident’ but there’s always an element of surprise when you open the kiln.” With a new kiln at home, Catherine has lots of freedom to experiment, particularly with firing at different temperatures. “You need skill and technical knowledge for all processes, but especially with firing,” says Catherine. “When you pack a kiln you always say a prayer to the kiln god. Then wait for his offerings when you open the door.”

THE EDIT BELOW: “The handles could be ancient or modern and I like that ‘confusion’,” says Catherine, holding one of her works. OPPOSITE, BOTTOM LEFT: Two vessels are left to dry before firing. “Different clays give you different results,” she explains. “I prefer a ‘groggy’ clay, which contains more sand. It’s earthy looking with lots of texture.” OPPOSITE, FAR LEFT: A selection of moulds sit on the studio shelves. OPPOSITE, LEFT: The artist sculpts her vessel on a turntable to refine its shape. “I have no concept of time when I’m in the flow and just focus on my hands working the clay,” she says.

“I LOVE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN DIGGING UP CLAY FROM THE EARTH AND MAKING SOMETHING FROM IT. IT’S AN ANCIENT AND ENDURING ART FORM” ~ CATHERINE

AN ORIGINAL EDWARDIAN HOME IS TRANSFORMED INTO A SUN-SOAKED, AIRY ABODE THAT BRINGS A FAMILY OF FIVE TOGETHER

CLASSIC BEAUTY As you step into the entrance (opposite) of this serene home in London, the eye is drawn to bespoke panelling. “I designed it,”

says Elizabeth (pictured above in the living area with Jack Russell Crackers), who lives here with her husband James and sons, Freddie, Jonah and Sacha. An antique sideboard and bowl sit beneath a David Brayne artwork while in the study beyond, the walls and ceiling are adorned with Temple wallpaper by Veere Grenney and a Jan Coutts artwork provides contrast. HOMES

F

inding an abode with open spaces that flow between each other was on top of the hit list when Elizabeth, an interior consultant, and her husband James were looking for a new family home, so when they discovered an Edwardian house in south-west London in 2014 with loads of potential they were delighted and snapped it up. While the home, which they share with Freddie, now 15, Jonah, now 12, and Sacha, now seven, was dated it had good bones and 18 months later it had been transformed into a light, airy home that pays homage to its heritage while having a modern aesthetic. Before this, the family had been living in a converted doctor’s surgery but when their eldest son went to boarding school, the house suddenly felt too big and empty for them. “We were rattling around in a tiny corner of our home and wanted less of the ‘museum’ rooms and more family spaces that flowed together,” says Elizabeth. So, they decided to look for their next project and the stately Edwardian home in a quiet neighbourhood was ideal. The couple engaged builders Bygga Construction to bring their vision to life by extending the property upwards, outwards and downwards, and modernising the interior. “The garden was a sloping quagmire with a 1980s conservatory and a small old-fashioned kitchen at the rear,” says Elizabeth. “Both were knocked down and replaced with a large extension featuring an open-plan kitchen, diner and seating area, with a new master bedroom above.” A late family friend who used to work at London design house Veere Grenney and an architectural designer friend in the Bahamas heavily influenced Elizabeth when it came to the interior design. The latter’s advice via Skype on the joinery proved invaluable. “I wanted lots of English panelling with a strong nod to that New England beach house look but with slicker London bones,” she says. “It’s all about shutters, panels, articulated lights and wood flooring combined with bleached wood and antique furniture.” The secret to Elizabeth’s success is keeping the paint backdrop on walls, skirtings, doors and woodwork very simple, then embellishing key rooms with wallpaper, lamps, rugs and upholstery. “I love using black to highlight each space too,” she explains. ‘This could be ebony knobs, bannisters, metal doors and the odd candle or accessory.” Steps down into the new area at the back of the home give extra ceiling height, adding to the airy feel, while two skylights and three sets of steel doors allow light to stream into the space where the family gather to eat and relax. Originally, the couple had planned a sunken seating area next to the kitchen diner, but this idea was abandoned when they saw the space wasn’t big enough. “We also realised the three sets of floor-to-ceiling metal doors would look monstrously wide, so made them narrower,” says Elizabeth. The redesigned home also allows the couple to retreat, with the dressing room entrance of the main bedroom now off a mini corridor opposite the ensuite. “It’s like having your own little apartment,” she says. With the house now future-proofed for family life, Elizabeth has turned her expert eye to the area at the back of the home, adding a garden office and, although the British weather doesn’t always lend itself to outdoor entertaining, she’s also installed a built-in barbecue and outside bar to make the most of the sporadic sunny days.

HOMES KITCHEN “Spending more on the kitchen, beautiful bespoke joinery

and American-style polished nickel ironmongery was well worth it,” says Elizabeth of the cook zone, where dark blue glazed cabinets add slick sophistication. Industrial factory-style pendant lights (for similar, try Zander Lighting ‘Viterbo’ pendant light from Temple & Webster) are suspended above the custom table and Carrara marble kitchen island. The ‘Wishbone’ dining chairs are from The Conran Shop (try Cult). >

SITTING ROOM A driftwood lamp picked up on travels makes a statement

in the ‘TV room’ where the family gather to watch the latest Netflix series. The tones of the pale timber base complements the comfy built-in sofa designed by Elizabeth and inspired by a designer friend in the Bahamas who helped her with the interiors. In the centre, an ottoman is covered in Andrew Martin fabric, which Elizabeth had made, and underfoot a kilim rug by Jenny Hicks Beach (for similar, try Cadrys) adds a splash of colour to the neutral scheme. The antique carved candleholder was made by Elizabeth’s great-grandfather.

space (above) to the left of the front door welcomes guests to the home, inviting them to sink into comfy, generous armchairs on either side of a roaring fireplace. As part of the renovation, the couple removed the hallway wall to make a much grander entrance and then added double doors between this area and the sitting room so it could be opened up or closed. An ornate antique mirror (for similar, try Rexington Home ‘Cordelia’ mirror from Temple & Webster) ties in with the palette and the textured rug seems to melt into the pale timber flooring. A piano Elizabeth inherited from her mum sits by the bay window. “It has sentimental value as my dad bought it for her when they first got engaged,” she says.

Elizabeth, an interior consultant; her husband James, who runs a financial technology business; their sons, Freddie, 15, Jonah, 12, and Sacha, seven; plus Crackers, the Jack Russell. WHAT SPACE DO YOU LOVE THE MOST?

Elizabeth: “I love the kitchen – it has great light and it’s a fresh space in winter and summer. The family often gather around the kitchen island.” WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OBJECT?

“I love the driftwood lamps in the sitting room, which I bought in an interiors shop in Lake Annecy in France.” ADVICE FOR OTHERS RENOVATING?

4 1. A rough-hewn timber table in the dining area beside the kitchen adds a rustic feel. 2. Elizabeth’s favourite spot in the home. 3. In the main bathroom, a striking artwork by family friend Annabel Pope sits above a French-style Water Monopoly ‘Paris’ bath. 4. A gold-hued framed artwork by Robert Heindel above an armchair is the perfect addition to the main guest bedroom. 5. Sacha’s room has a nautical theme with a model sailing boat, striped bedlinen and an Ikea ‘Tripp Trapp’ chair in blue. 6. Dark banisters counter the pale palette on the stairs. An artwork by Jan Coutts is in the study on the ground floor. 7. As there was a window to work around, it took some clever planning to fit in all the closet space the couple needed.

“Don’t underestimate the budget needed for things such as switches, wall lights, shower tiles, work surfaces, ironmongery, wallpapers, rugs and carpets.”

(pictured here in the kitchen), her husband James and kids Hudson, seven, and Georgie, five. A lesson in mixing materials, the kitchen contrasts fluted timber joinery with Living Edge copper pendants and a stone ‘Bianco Neve’ terrazzo splashback and benchtop by Signorino Tiles. “James is an amazing cook, so we needed a feature island bench that would be perfect for entertaining and cooking,” Katie says. F

or interior designer Katie and construction manager James, the allure of sea breezes and ocean views was too heavenly to resist when they stumbled across this 1970s abode south of Sydney. The beachside setting was the catalyst for their sea change, but the fact that it was in a quiet cul-de-sac was also a drawcard – evoking fond childhood memories of the street where James grew up, in the United Kingdom. As the joint owners of a boutique interior-design venture, Nested Projects, this dream design duo saw the potential to flex their creative muscles with the two-storey, “nondescript house with good bones,” says Katie. They envisioned a modern coastal-style home bursting with natural light and open-plan spaces to share with their son Hudson, seven (who lives here part time), and daughter Georgie, five. After buying the perfectly positioned house, the pair didn’t waste any time before launching into renovations spanning four months. This involved a complete interior overhaul and major landscaping works, as they converted the existing spacious lawn into an alfresco kitchen and tranquil backyard pool. So eager were they to enjoy their idyllic beachside location, the young family moved in before the renovations were even finalised. “The pool hadn’t yet been completed, so it was a huge dust bowl. I don’t think our Jack Russell, Dudley, ever recovered from all the building noise!” Katie laughs. Structurally, the major adjustment inside “was increasing the top floor from one large room to three bedrooms, plus an ensuite and a balcony in the master bedroom to take advantage of the ocean views,” the designer shares. Her passion and prowess in design shines through in carefully curated interiors that balance simple silhouettes with sophisticated surfaces in every room. “I am a huge fan of mixing textures, and the contrast of the terrazzo benchtop and splashback against the timber veneer really makes the stone pop,” Katie says of the tactile galley kitchen. This space flows into an inviting living room (opposite) that creates cosy corners to unwind within the parameters of calming coastal style; spot the bird of paradise vintage wall hanging, natural fabrics and serene colour palette of earthy tones and copper accents – chosen to reflect the home’s seaside surrounds. The open-plan layout also encompasses a striking dining room, which makes a brilliant first impression as the first room seen upon entry. From there, one need only look beyond the sheer custom curtains marking the edge of the kitchen to be greeted by the outdoor oasis. “We wanted to be able to see the kids playing outside from both our kitchen and living area,” says Katie, whose wish has been granted. “I love opening our large sliding doors and looking outside to the yard and garden,” she muses. Besides the ocean vista and delightful design features, you can’t help but notice the abundance of natural light. Streaks of sunshine dance across the walls and cast patterns along the first level’s engineered timber floorboards at differing times of day, as though applying the finishing seal on a painting. What’s more, design-savvy features set the interiors apart from traditional coastal style, such as impressive wine-storage joinery, recessed shelving and consoles, and a pivot door concealed in the rumpus room. “This house ticks all the boxes and really feels like a family home,” Katie beams. Perhaps one day, Hudson and Georgie will recall their own tender memories of growing up in a beautiful, beachside home tucked away on a cul-de-sac.

LIVING ROOM Bespoke timber veneer and black steel shelving provides a captivating backdrop in the open-plan living area. “This custom

joinery was designed around the vintage wall hanging, with lots of space to display our favourite personal items, family photos, and my collection of magazines,” shares Katie. “We used different coloured elements, so the items could be interchangeable if we discovered a new object on our travels,” she adds. A pair of ‘Thomas’ chairs from Bisque Traders are an open invitation to unwind, while a ‘Tepih’ rug by Globe West creates comfort underfoot. Meanwhile, a verdant plant in a ‘Big Chief’ pot by Arc & Family reflects the colours in the bird of paradise wall hanging. >

HOMES DINING ROOM “I love that this is the first room you see when you walk in through the front door,” says Katie, of her favourite space, where banquette seating upholstered in vinyl by Kvadrat Maharam is a scene-stealing addition. The seat is styled with a striped bench cushion by Zepel Fabrics and the couple’s existing leather chairs by Stylecraft, which tie in with an ‘Aren’ leather cushion from MRD Home. Inspired by the curves of the kitchen island, arched shelves in American oak veneer are recessed into a textural feature wall in Pavimento by Porter’s Paints and a Tahitian geometric wall sconce from Lighting Collective sits between them. “The dining wall has beautiful shadows cast on there in the afternoon; it turned out exactly as I had hoped,” says Katie with a smile. Objects on the right-hand shelves include two by ceramicist Karen Morton (far right on top and bottom shelf) and a Mud Australia vase is on the table. >

T

urning onto the unsealed track that leads to her Mornington Peninsula beach house signals cherished downtime for interior designer Belinda and her family. Harry the mini maltese certainly included! “Harry sits up the minute the tyres hit the dirt – he knows we’re almost there,” says Belinda. “He gets so excited!” The spell was cast the first moment she and husband Dan saw the secluded pocket of land guarded by a leafy awning of gum trees. Not even the fact that the postwar bungalow awaiting their inspection had seen better days could dampen her enthusiasm. Quite the contrary. “When we bought the house in 2011, it was an old, salmon-brown fibro shack, but I saw so much potential in it,” says Belinda, director of Gallerie B Interiors. “It was in reasonable condition, but very basic. It had no insulation so it was drafty year-round and freezing in winter. “There was orange-toned timber flooring, a brown exposed-brick fireplace and creamy-yellow walls – definitely not my colours! Over the years, we de-fibroed it and added insulation and timber cladding. We also slightly expanded it to make it more comfortable, without having to alter the footprint very much at all.” What Belinda did do, and to gorgeous effect, was bring the style of the home into a new era with a top-to-toe overhaul. The mum to Lucy, 16, and Mia, 13, was in her element as both designer-decorator and client. “There was definitely a freedom that came with that,” she says. “Although, of course, I still had to keep to a budget, as we all do!”

80

HOMEBEAUTIFUL.COM.AU

Describing her decorating style as “classic but with a contemporary and elegant edge”, Belinda has long been a fan of the Hamptons look. “This house has Hamptons-style features, such as shaker-profile doors to the cabinetry and a shiplap wall on the fireplace,” she says. A sense of serenity permeates, its seaside setting lending inspiration for the key highlights of blue. Shades range from a duck-egg hue in the kitchen to navy in the family bathroom and bring harmony to the zones. Happily, practicality and comfort also prevail. After all, this is her family’s holiday house. In the living room, a plush sofa layered with cushions and throws promotes a laid-back atmosphere, while each of the divinely decorated sleep zones feels instantly inviting. “The sofa is light grey but has been Scotchgarded, so we don’t have to be particular with it,” says Belinda. “The benchtops in the kitchen and the bathrooms are reconstituted stone, which is so hard-wearing. We didn’t want this to be a precious house. I was conscious that when friends and family visit, they would feel cosy and comfortable.” Important, too, was that the exterior, painted in a moody charcoal, connects to its lush surrounds. French doors link the living zone to the deck and native garden beyond, and an outdoor lounge and fire pit beckons in a corner of the yard. “The foliage is a eucalyptus green, which contrasts against the dark exterior and the white trims,” says Belinda. “I wanted to create a real feeling of inside-outside living.” She can’t imagine ever saying a permanent goodbye to her home away from home and simply says, “It’s pretty perfect for all of us.” >

DINING AREA & KITCHEN Reflective of Belinda’s long-time love affair with many shades of blue, white and grey, the light-filled hub is a lesson in the transformative power of colour. “If colour makes you happy and speaks to you, just go for it,” is the designer’s sage advice. In the dining domain, a long-held timber table forms an effective partnership with Canvas+Sasson ‘Sloane Somerset’ chairs. In the kitchen (also opposite), a sea of shaker-style 2-pac cabinetry in Dulux Lexicon Half is juxtaposed against the island front in Dulux Calandre and benchtops in Caesarstone Noble Grey. Shapely ‘Dome’ pendant lights by Mud Australia and Globe West ‘Olivia’ bar stools are further in keeping with the coastal vibe. The original floorboards were sanded back and limewashed, the round board is from Red Hill House and the pink bowl is from The Artisan Storeroom.

S

tylist Amber Keller admits she’s a city girl at heart, yet the allure of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast prompted her and her family to leave the hustle and bustle of Sydney for a more laid-back pace closer to the beach. “We’d come every summer to visit my husband Matt’s relatives, who live at nearby Sunshine Beach, with our girls, Amelie and Alessandra, and each trip we’d want to stay longer,” says Amber. “We just loved it so much.” Four years ago, they made the permanent sea change and snapped up a little beach house – yet before long another move was on the cards after they discovered the hinterland. “We didn’t know much about the area when we moved here, but on weekend drives to the Eumundi Markets we started exploring a few pockets,” says Amber. “We found this whole other world, with homes among trees on acreage and with incredible views, not far from Noosa’s main beach. It was magical.” Not shy of a renovation, having transformed their three previous homes, Amber began looking for a hinterland property. She stumbled on a perfect ugly duckling that had sat on the market for months. “It’s not surprising it had been overlooked,” explains Amber. “The colours and finishes were a terrible mix of apricot, beige and brown, cheap carpet and terracotta tiles, which hadn’t been updated in about 20 years, and the gardens were so overgrown they hid the exterior.”

On the plus side, the property had great bones, incredible views and an expansive block filled with tropical fruit trees and bordered by lush Noosa reserve rainforest – which the family later discovered was home to rock wallabies who visit at dusk to nibble their lawn. Amber dived into renovation mode and had new flooring installed, the interior repainted and the old kitchen ripped out before the family moved in. Although no structural or layout changes were required, it was still a huge project, encompassing five bedrooms, two bathrooms and large living areas across two levels. Outside, the exterior was also repainted, gardens revitalised with landscaping and the pool overhauled to create a Mediterranean-inspired outdoor entertaining area. The palette was kept to black and white, providing a backdrop for Amber to add flourishes of colour with homewares and art. Having collected heirlooms and classic pieces since her early 20s, she and Matt brought a significant amount of furniture with them yet added pieces for a casual, coastal feel. “The timber floors, white walls, VJ panels and rattan add a natural textural sensibility,” says Amber. “With the high ceilings and ocean glimpses, it feels beachy, even in the hinterland.” The best improvement is the kitchen, with views stretching to the ocean. “It’s wonderful,” says Amber. “The girls love to go to the garden and pick fruit – whatever’s in season – and make little tarts and cakes on weekends. It’s so special to be able to do that. It’s a magic lifestyle.”

PATIO Homeowners Amber and Matt (pictured, above) with daughters Amelie, 13 (on sofa), and Alessandra, nine, and pets Willow and Ruby. KITCHEN The heart of the home (opposite) scored the biggest transformation. “It’s a social place where the girls and I cook and chat, so I wanted

it to feel welcoming yet also incredibly functional,” says Amber. Finishes include Technistone Noble Supreme White benchtops and custom two-pac cabinetry in Dulux Lexicon Quarter, with VJ cladding in Dulux Domino for contrast on the pantry and island bench. ‘Bistro’ stools from Provincial Home Living, ‘Herman’ pendants from Beacon Lighting and a ‘Spin’ gooseneck sink mixer from Highgrove Bathrooms complement the chic look.

Rather than a bright candy hue which might fall out of favour, Amber defined a VJ feature wall in Dulux Mornington Half, which creates a subtle dusty pink backdrop (above). “It’s a colour that won’t date and, teamed with accessories in shades of blush and rust, it’s soft and serene,” she says. RESTORATION ONE FAMILY’S MISSION TO REHABILITATE A DERELICT VICTORIAN TERRACE DELIVERED SOULFUL REWARDS Story ANNA MC COOE Photography SUE STUBBS Styling BREE OLIVER GRANDEUR & GRACE Returning this Victorian terrace to its former glory required investigation by homeowner, Nikki (pictured above) with

the help of heritage consultant, John Oultram. Decades ago, the charming façade was stripped bare to accommodate a Depression-era enclosed balcony, the wrought iron was ripped out and fireplaces were butchered. With double French doors reinstated, a fresh coat of paint – try Dulux Chalk U.S.A. – and tiles from Renditions Tiles laid, the exterior was complete. In the formal lounge room (opposite) Nikki’s favourite thing is “the northern light that comes in through the arched windows.” The fireplace is a close second. She found the fascias years ago on the street and the mantlepiece is from The Heritage Building Centre. The mirror Nikki says was “burned by a candle during a dinner party. I could get rid of it but it’s a reminder of fun times.” A Visual Comfort ‘Ruhlmann’ chandelier adds charm while the armchair is covered in Linara fabric, both from The Classic Outfitter. >

n the afterglow of renovating, Nikki and Nigel moved into their tszujed-up Eastern Sydney terrace house in December 2019. Halfway in, they tucked away unpacked boxes, hung sheets as makeshift curtains and took off overseas for a month with their three kids, Emma, now 10, Olivia, now 9, and Edward, now 6. When they came back, Australia locked down and the time-old settling in process switched to COVID-era nesting. Plans for custom window treatments needed readdressing, thoughts of languidly shopping for finishing touches pivoted online while working on the garden meant lining up at Bunnings. Through shutdown, the kids home-schooled around the kitchen island and Nigel worked in the attic, which Nikki said was so quiet they had to call each other to talk. On Friday nights, they all cooked pizza from scratch. “Through the chaos, there were moments where we could come together,” says Nikki. “It was a beautiful bonding time.” Before they bought the terrace in 2017, the family knew it as ‘the haunted house’, so overgrown was the garden and dilapidated the exterior, which was stripped of heritage charm. They lived around the corner and took a look on a whim when the house came to market, feeling instantly connected – despite, or perhaps because of the falling down bathroom ceiling and peeling paint. The first iteration of the renovation was a family affair. It started in the formal front rooms where Nikki’s dad installed the fireplace fascia Nikki had salvaged from the footpath, her father-in-law and brother pitched in and her mother helped with the garden, sourcing fixtures and “kept us all well fed”. Nikki and her sister-in-law drove out to cast-iron foundries to find replacements for the original trim. Stage two was more involved and called for professionals. Nikki worked with Con Kritikos from Ark Design Studio on plans to submit to council and then she and her builder Peter Yang from Aust Building Construction & Renovation refined as they went along, “creating togetherness but also escape,” she explains. The new, family-centred floorplan flows as a series of progressive spaces. A half wall between the kitchen and dining areas cleverly closes off an appliance nook. Having worked with Bree Oliver of The Classic Outfitter on wallpaper for her previous house, she entrusted her kindred style spirit with furniture selection as she managed the renovation, selecting all the finishes and fixtures and designing the kitchen and bathrooms. The result is breezy and comfy. Nikki says her style is a modern twist on classic. “I love cool colour tones, black and white, and find neutrals soothing,” she says. “The kids bring their toys and clothing into the mix but when the background is calming it’s all very pleasant.” As lockdowns lifted, the couple entertained friends and enjoyed the sensation of arriving home after days out. They are totally invested in their home and its history. “At every turn, we can see ourselves and what we put back into the house reflected,” says Nikki. Because this old house now has a new story to tell. FORMAL LOUNGE Giovanni Piranesi etchings hang in the formal

Although this terrace is wider than most, design tricks were still used to create space. “The wall between the front formal rooms and the back of the house were opened up, in order to create sight lines and flow through the home,” says stylist Bree Oliver, who worked on furniture selection.

legant. Effortless. Eclectic. French interior design blends the understated beauty of Paris with the rustic charm of Provence, through the telltale design features of parquetry flooring, antique decor, exposed timber, and neutral hues. The timeless style of French interiors is a lesson in unfussy sophistication – and it’s a look that can work so well in Australian homes. “French style can be theatrical, while also showing restraint. I love the playful sophistication, combining bold shapes with a controlled use of pattern and colour,” says interior designer Justin Bishop, who designed this Melbourne home (seen throughout). For a heady dose of Gallic inspiration and expert tips, flick through these striking interiors and fall head over heels in l’amour.

Perfect parquetry

To harness French provincial style, natural wood parquetry flooring is non-negotiable. “Parquetry flooring is a design classic. It gives texture in a subtle way and has a very high-end look,” says interior designer Annie Bowen. “Keep the colour palette very simple with white walls and contemporary or classic style furniture; the parquetry then becomes the hero.” Whether you opt for herringbone, chevron or Chantilly patterns, timber parquetry flooring boasts a gorgeous geometric design and can be restored and refinished over and over again, lending every room an authentic sensibility. >

French polish

Metallics such as brass and gold should be in every decorator’s treasure chest of design and can be used anywhere in the home. “Brass accents add a lot of charm to a house. In the bathroom, one of my favourite combinations is an old cast-iron bathtub and ceramic sinks with brass fittings,” shares Sarah Poniatowski, director of Maison Sarah Lavoine. As for the living room, she suggests “adding a discreet touch of brass and associating it with simple, natural and timeless materials such as wood, stone and brick”. To channel French appeal, scour vintage stores for antique gold-framed mirrors, brass door handles and wall sconces.

Neutral shades teamed with quality materials and fabrics epitomise the French approach to decorating.

Effortless elegance

You never know what you’re going to find when you step into a French home, as the favoured decor is often eclectic. “We favour high-quality materials and beautiful fabrics, which give an unflashy refinement,” says French designer Sarah. “French interiors are void of fashion and trends; it’s an effortless and confident blend of different eras, both old and new, that creates a distinctly French style,” adds Justin Bishop, who designed the versatile butler’s table (left). Adopt a laissez-faire attitude by mixing characterful flea-market finds with modern pieces and personal treasures, while introducing gentle textiles. “The use of linens for your soft furnishings and window treatments plays an important role in softening the space,” advises Dominique McAdam, founder of Provincial Kitchens Home.

Shake it up

Provincial style comes into its own in the kitchen. Essential ingredients include natural stone benchtops, marble tile splashbacks and exposed timber beams in older, heritage properties. “Shaker-style cabinets are constructed with a frame around a recessed centre panel, which is popular in provincial kitchens because of its solid, traditional lines and detailing,” explains Dominique, who favours hand-painted timber cabinetry for its longevity. “For splashbacks, use ceramic or marble tiles [opposite]. They can be subway, square or herringbone, accentuated with white, black or grey grout to complete the look.” >

Calm and collected

Taking colour cues from nature, French design pairs neutral shades with bold accents to create contrast and structure. “Matt, grey-based whites are the traditional choice. For the more adventurous, using variations of muted blues, pale grey-greens or a soft duck-egg blue can provide an interesting alternative to white,” says Dominique. “For a lovely charcoal colour, try Porter’s Paints Gunmetal Grey or Taubmans Gravel,” advises Annie. “For a crisp white, try Dulux Lexicon Half or Haymes Paint Greyology 1.”

Decorative cabriole legs bring a side of classic French glamour to the table – and room.

Beautifully manicured gardens are the epitome of French formal garden design, as the symmetrical landscapes boast sprawling flowerbeds, boxwood hedges and gravel pathways. To steal this style, start by introducing gravel underfoot or create stepping stones or pathways that lead you through to different zones in the garden. In your flowerbeds, plant blooms in cool colours such as lavender, jasmine, gardenia, climbing ivy and delightful rose bushes.

T

he laundry is arguably the hardest-working room in the house and yet, traditionally, the design of this essential utilitarian zone has rarely been approached with as much care and consideration as our living or bedroom spaces. After all, it’s just the washing machine, dryer, sink and some cupboards, right? Not so. The way we view laundries is changing. We’ve collected some of the best design inspiration, layout advice and interior design techniques to equip you to dream up and create a laundry that’s as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of your home. From space-saving and storage ideas to appliance integration, we’ve got you covered.

HOLDING PATTERN Colour, pattern and texture harmonise in this Sydney laundry (above) by interior designer Lisa Burdus. “I wanted the laundry to look and feel like any other room in the house, decorated with wallpaper, window coverings and a rug on the floor,” says Lisa. The space features Cole & Son ‘Florencecourt’ wallpaper (try Wallpaper Direct), blinds in Nicole Fabre fabric (try Elliott Clarke) and a Moroccan rug from Lisa’s own collection. “The fabric for the blinds is close in colour to the rug, which balances the room,” says Lisa, whose top tip is to keep surfaces clear. “Ensure what you see from the open door is as neat as possible,” she adds.

When Studio Trio interior designer Lauren Mahoney was asked to produce a laundry that was practical and a joy to be in for the owners of this Sydney home, the right layout was vital. The U-shaped floor plan (below) facilitates a leafy outlook at the sink and enough room for two washers and a dryer, concealed hanging rail, washing baskets and storage. For an ergonomic laundry of your own, focus on the finer details. “Allow extra depth behind appliances to get a flush finish with the joinery, or the machines will stick out,” advises Lauren. “Add pull-out baskets to hide dirty laundry and, if possible, face the sink to the outside or near a window.” >

PERSONALITY PLUS Tasked by her Brisbane clients to come up with a laundry (left) that boasted a vibrant personality, Julia Stojanovic, interior designer at CG Design Studio, selected wall tiles from Earp Bros in various glazes and vinyl grassweave wallpaper in bold hues of blue. The result is instant texture and movement. “It’s important to uphold the relationship between finishes,” says Julia. “This laundry utilises variations of blue that, although diverse in texture, are unified and harmonious.” Texture-rich laundries will benefit from a simple palette, while more uniform spaces can support more colour.

ON PURPOSE This Sydney laundry (opposite) by Stritt Design & Construction is pure function. “The laundry incorporates a stacking dryer and washing machine, which allows for ease of access, plenty of bench space for folding and a long hanging rail perfect for hanging freshly ironed clothes,” says Janine Stritt. “A pull-out cupboard below with double hampers is wonderful for sorting washing and to the right of the benchtop is a laundry chute.” Janine likes stacking appliances to free up bench space, or elevating appliances so they can be easily reached.

CURVES & COLOUR

This space-saving Melbourne laundry (above) by Terri Shannon of Bloom Interior Design & Decoration combines a European design with practical solutions. “The bi-fold door and monochrome palette is the hero,” says Terri. “We also installed a hamper drawer, which is great for storing washing.” The secret to aceing a small-space laundry is spatial planning and careful colour consideration. “Ensure your appliances and sink all fit within the cavity space, and the doors need to fold clear of the work area,” says Terri. “White is always a good all-rounder, and you can add a splash of colour through a gorgeous mosaic tile.”

An innovative circular shape defines this compact laundry (above) by Sydney’s Blue Tea Kitchens & Bathrooms. Inax ‘Yuki Border’ wall tiles from Artedomus add texture, and the practical timber hanging rail contributes a warm, soft contrast material to the palette. “When designing a small laundry, have enough space for the washer and dryer plus a little extra for pipes, and a proper drainage outlet for the washing machine and exhaust for the dryer,” says Ciara Tapia, architect at Blue Tea Kitchens & Bathrooms. Popham floor tiles from Onsite Supply + Design contribute colour without being overpowering.

HYGGE HAVEN Chloe Brookman, founder of lifestyle brand Olli Ella, channelled much of the brand’s Hygge aesthetic when she renovated her dark and dated 1970s bungalow in Byron Bay. A standout example is the light-filled laundry (below), with its Scandi timber cabinetry, chunky rug, rattan pendant light, plenty of baskets, potted plants and an abundance of shelving to display her flea-market finds. “Our style is unfussy and casual,” says Chloe. TECH UPDATES TO REBOOT YOUR LIFE MODERN TECHNOLOGY AND SMART APPLIANCES ARE REVOLUTIONISING OUR HOMES AND OUR LIVES – HERE ARE THE LATEST AND GREATEST FOR EVERY ROOM OF YOUR HOME Words HOLLY BYRNE

T

here is much more to ‘smart home’ appliances than a talking speaker. It’s 2021, after all – instead, think about to-the-degree precision cooking, transforming televisions and a sleek, steel wardrobe that will smooth out your suit overnight. “Smart appliances are truly life-changing,” declares Marine Pestel, marketing director at Tefal. “Innovations today are based on digital technology, and this new era is opening up amazing possibilities.” That is no exaggeration. From saving time to keeping things tidy and impressing your guests, there are plenty of benefits to behold when it comes to embracing innovation. More than ever, there isn’t a room in your home that can’t be ‘smart’.

1 TRANSFORMING TELEVISION Design aficionados, rejoice! Not only does the latest release of Samsung’s The Frame TV convert to an artwork when it’s not in use – it has also banished the unsightly cord conundrum (above). Instead of a tangled mess, the One Clear Cable feature uses a single, translucent cable to connect to the Samsung ‘One Connect’ box which connects all of your devices, including power. Customisable frames for the television itself means it can be designed to suit any style of home seamlessly, and QLED display technology allows clear vision in any lighting. What does this mean? No more glare.

DESIGN FILE

2 A HELPING HAND IN THE KITCHEN Say goodbye to the age-old ‘What’s for dinner?’ dilemma and take the stress out of preparing family meals – it’s the last thing you need after a long day at work, right? The secret is Tefal’s latest multi-cooker rendition, the ‘Cook4me touch’, $699.95 (below). “We’re able to assist users in the preparation of meals through connectivity and services, providing cooking inspiration, offering video tips and step-by-step guidance,” says Marine Pestel of Tefal. Wifi connectivity gives you access to thousands of recipes to follow on the touch screen, and a dishwasher-safe bowl makes cleaning up a breeze.

4

WARDROBE OF WONDERS 3 FRESHEN UP So, that pile of clothes isn’t dirty enough to wash but isn’t clean enough to go back in the cupboard? The answer is the new Steam Refresh cycle on Fisher & Paykel washing machines such as the ‘WH1160F2’ front loader with ActiveIntelligence, $1999, from Harvey Norman (below, left). “The 20-minute cycle deodorises and de-wrinkles fabrics, leaving them smelling great and ready to wear,” says Roseanna Langtry, marketing manager, refrigeration and laundry at Fisher & Paykel. “Steam also saves water and reduces overall degradation of clothes, being kinder to the environment as well as your clothes.”

Technology might still be working on a method to fold and put away laundry – but until then, the V-ZUG ‘Refresh Butler’ system, $29,990, from Winning Appliances (above), is the next best thing. It’s basically an in-house dry-cleaner using photocatalysis technology (a reaction caused by light) and a heat pump to dry, refresh and de-wrinkle clothes. “It’s a tour-de-force,” says Bruce Cranston, product expert at Winning Appliances. “Clothes are dried gently and refreshed with steam, while germs and bacteria are eliminated, thanks to the hygiene program. Suits, evening dresses and coats can now enjoy refresh, anti-crease, sanitise and drying treatment at home.”

5 COOKING WITH CONSISTENCY Have you ever wished there was a way to cook the perfect roast, every single time? The temperature-probe technology in ovens like Gaggenau’s ‘200 Series’ pyrolytic built-in model from Winning Appliances (the 60cm version is $6499), takes all guesswork out of cooking to give you a precise and expertly cooked finished product. “Probe cooking is increasingly popular as it gives consistent results,” says Bruce. “This oven uses a three-point temperature probe, which ensures an accurate temperature reading and perfect cooking results every time.” This smartest of smart appliances also allows you to save individual recipes (including the temperature probe), so once you’ve nailed that faultless roast, you can set and forget. >

6

FAST BLAST Whether you’re a dessert chef in the making or simply caught off guard by unexpected guests, Smeg’s ‘Dolce Stil Novo’ built-in blast chiller, $7490, from Winning Appliances (below), is a god-send. “It cools a case of champagne, wine or beer in just over 30 minutes,” says Bruce Cranston of Winning Appliances. The rapid freezing functionality quickly drops the core temperature of food to -18°C, which means it can also play a big role in reducing your food waste. “It locks in the freshness and allows the storage of frozen food for longer,” says Bruce.

8 IMPRESS YOUR GUESTS Step up your charcuterie game with a fridge dedicated to preserving wine, cheese and meat – that’s the Fhiaba wine cabinet with prosciutteria kit, $19,000, Winning Appliances (above). “Handcrafted in Italy, Fhiaba appliances take food and wine preservation to another level,” says Bruce. “The wine cabinet can also store cured meat and cheese, enabling combinations of use via two climate-controlled areas.” The stainless-steel machine also has accessories to customise zones and the display of products and produce.

NEAT AND DISCREET

7 BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Every keen cook can appreciate the beauty of a gas cooktop, from the instant heat to the consistent flame. But for those who love the convenience of easy cleaning, precise temperature control and energy efficiency, it’s hard to go past the induction alternative. Thankfully, the latest innovation from leading appliance manufacturer Fisher & Paykel, the ‘CGI905DNGTB4’ gas and induction cooktop, $5099, means you can have both. “As people have spent more time at home and cooked more at home, they have experimented and expanded their culinary repertoire,” says Belinda Toner, general manager of product at Fisher & Paykel. “Consequently, they have demanded more from their cooking appliances, which need to be versatile and intuitive.” Best of all, this crowd-pleasing combination comes bundled in a stunning design of black glass and matt-black detailing.

Heated seating, built-in deodorising and self-cleaning – could a toilet be any better? A smart toilet is the pinnacle of luxury and technology, and the Lafeme ‘Lucci’, $4550, from Bathroom Sales Direct (below), can be controlled via a smartphone app. It’s sleek, neat and minimalist – and an antibacterial seat means it’s also a germophobe’s dream.

10 SUPER-CHARGE YOUR HOME OFFICE Work from home in style with a streamlined smart desk. Part of award-winning Australian designer Tom Fereday’s debut collaboration with King, the ‘Eto Select’ desk (below), from $1690/70cm x 150cm, is the first desk in the world to offer integrated power and wireless charging and lighting options. ew understand the power of the humble bedhead. This underrated style tool can add colour, shape, texture, scale and weight to a room – all without embarking on a major bedroom makeover. “Consumers are increasingly prioritising the bedroom as a sanctuary to unwind, which has given rise to restorative bedrooms, and bedheads help echo this calming and nurturing sentiment by adding colour and texture to a space,” says Heatherly Design founder and director, Georgie Leckey, whose business specialises in bedheads.

in the frame The styling opportunities presented by a bedhead are endless, says stylist Julia Green of Greenhouse Interiors. “They are a brilliant way to frame a space and set the stage for the layout of your room. Bedheads supply texture, depending on what materials are used, and inject personality. They’ve come a long way from the straight, rectangular shapes of old, and now exist with curves, which work really well, given most rooms are square or rectangular,” she says. “Bedheads add a bold and intentional style quality to a bedroom and are a great way to play with proportion or the dimensions of a room in order to create depth,” adds Georgie. “As the foundation of the bedroom, a bedhead should create a look that is entirely unique to the space. For example, a child’s bedroom might embrace playfulness and a youthful energy with a brighter colour palette, or a guestroom might incorporate a fabric that is abundant in mood-boosting tactility to create a warm welcome, while the main bedroom should balance aesthetic comfort with impeccable design for modern luxury.”

trending now Timber bed frames and bedheads experienced a resurgence during the past decade when Scandinavian style reigned supreme, but Georgie says we’re now seeing a shift away from that. “Curved silhouettes bring a serene element to bedroom interiors and soften the space, while buttery soft velvets and bouclé are still proving popular – these textural fabrics emphasise the cosiness craved by consumers. Fabric should be chosen not only for its beauty, but its durability,” says Georgie. “In the colour department, an earthy neutral palette of sesame, camel and eucalyptus not only creates tranquillity and harmony in the bedroom, but offers versatility across the seasons.” go into detail Georgie has some tips for identifying a well-crafted bedhead. “The weight of a product often defines the quality and longevity of it, and attention to detail and functionality is key,” she says. Future-proofing is also an important consideration. “Remember that freestanding bedheads can often be reupholstered, so you won’t be trapped into the one design forever,” says Julia. “The key to picking the right one is to decide upfront if it’s going to be the ‘feature’ of the space. If so, you can go a little wild with fabric options. If the bedhead is to simply frame a space and provide comfort, opt for a more conservative, colour-blocked bedhead. It’s important to decide this first, as it will inform your other decisions.”

Light the way to your entrance with spike lights and inviting wall-hung lanterns either side of your door.

LEADING LIGHTS CAST YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES IN THE BEST POSSIBLE LIGHT AND TURN YOUR ATTENTION TO STYLISH OPTIONS TO ILLUMINATE THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME Words VICTORIA KINGSBURY

T

he days are becoming longer and now, more than ever, we’re enjoying our outdoor spaces to the max, but there’s no need to head indoors just because the sun’s gone down. With the flick of a switch (or tap of an app – we’ll get to that later), you can illuminate your garden and continue into the night, creating extra space for entertaining or providing sanctuary. Exterior lighting can also highlight all your hard work in garden beds and create a dramatic entrance to your home, as well as safely light the way. Outdoor lighting trends have come a long way and there are many chic options available that allow you to think more creatively when designing outdoor spaces. Here, we shed some light on the best designs, ideas and advice for lighting up your exterior.

134

HOMEBEAUTIFUL.COM.AU

Layers of light

Just like your interiors, planning outdoor lighting is all about adding layers. “Layering in garden lighting is key for versatility,” says Scott Robinson, exterior lighting designer at Beacon Lighting. “Think of each space like a book that has a beginning, a middle and an end. For example, in the front yard, path lights draw the eye up the path and are a practical addition while creating a warm welcome. As visitors walk through the garden, they’ll be greeted by feature lighting that highlights key elements and creates visual interest. Lastly, your home’s entrance will be well lit by a decorative porch light that hints at the lighting design choices inside your home.” >

“A THOUGHTFUL LIGHTING PLAN DOESN’T COMPETE WITH THE LANDSCAPE; IT DISAPPEARS, LEAVING BEHIND A WARM, DIFFUSED GLOW”

~ ANTHONY WYER, LANDSCAPE DESIGNER

Your lighting should suit the look of your home, such as these circular up-and-down lights, designed by Wyer & Co for the cabana in this Mediterranean-style Sydney home.

Task lighting, such as directional spotlights or larger wall lights, are essential in outdoor cook zones.

Safety first

Wondering where to start? Scott stresses the priority should be safety. “The first step is to create a safe space by installing security lighting for added protection and step lights to help mitigate any trip hazards,” he advises. Then map out where you plan to locate your lights, as this will affect the type of fittings you can use. “IP rating is something to look for when selecting any fitting around your home,” says Scott. “If fully exposed in a garden, only use products that feature a minimum of IP44.” It’s wise to engage an electrician if you’re using high-voltage lighting. Low-voltage (12v) lights can usually be connected yourself. Anthony Wyer, landscape designer and creative director of Wyer & Co agrees. “First we identify the functional requirements of the space to ensure it is safe and practical, then we consider how each zone will be used and plan multiple switch patterns or, at times, a control system that engineers flexibility,” he says. There are many smart options available now that allow you to set timers, including in-built security cameras with two-way communication or different colours and effects, even voice command, all via an app. “With our Lucci Connect range you have so many features at your fingertips,” says Scott.

Solar power

If you are renting or you need to light areas further away from the home, such as a long driveway or garden shed (that don’t always have access to power), solar lighting may be a good solution. “If you are in a rental, solar lighting is a great option as it still creates ambience in your outdoor area and it doesn’t require any power,” explains lighting designer Jade Peterson of Lighting Collective. “Another option, which is becoming increasingly popular is portable outdoor lighting, which is USB charged. This allows any area of the garden to be illuminated without the need to rely on the power provisions of the sun.”

Create drama

Once functionality is sorted, your lighting layout and design choices are endless and this is when you can begin adding your own unique style. “We look to the feature or focal point of the garden where, for example, we may highlight the curve of a palm or other feature, while introducing background light for depth, and to create atmosphere,” explains Anthony. Amping up the ambience in your garden can be as simple as a few fairy lights strung through shrubs or a favourite tree, but why stop there? “Having a variety of different fittings with different beam angles and spread help create a sense of drama,” says Jade. “Wall lights are still the number one element included in exterior lighting as they are easy to install and can emit a great amount of light. While spike and step lights are easy to incorporate as they are low voltage and can be placed almost anywhere.” >

When planning seating areas and alcoves, use it as an opportunity to introduce bespoke lighting that’s the perfect fit, rather than an afterthought.

A wall-mounted candle lantern will create a romantic glow.

Party on

Whether you’re entertaining a crowd or just relaxing under the stars after a long day, lighting up your outdoor entertaining or dining area is an absolute must. “Indirect lights can help create a holiday vibe,” advises Scott. “Add spike lights throughout the garden to up-light some key feature trees as well as bollards to wash over small shrubs and even festoon lights woven through the garden bed can create a strong sense of depth and help bring your outdoor space to life.” If you’re going to be cooking in the space, task lighting is an equally important consideration. “My ideal set-up would be a mix of task and ambient lighting,” says Jade. “Making sure that you have adequate task lighting for cooking and dining while also having the option to either dim this down or turn it off completely, allowing your ambient lighting to take over. This is easily achieved with some indirect wall lights, uplighters both in the entertaining area or up-lighting a tree, then low-lighting with the use of deck lights and strip lighting.” For a showstopping entertaining area, you can be more playful. “We’re starting to see options for outdoor lighting that were once exclusively available in interior applications, such as sculptural pendants, and freestanding floor and table lamps,” shares Anthony.

Bright ideas

When choosing outdoor lights, make sure they’re in-keeping with the style of your home and complement the space architecturally. “We often take cues from the architecture [of a home] to ensure the garden, and in turn the lighting, is cohesive with its surroundings,” says Anthony. Scrolling the internet can bring plenty of ideas, but can also be overwhelming. Keeping it simple is a good rule of thumb. “We’re seeing a desire for clean, uncomplicated designs that reflect a simple, minimal aesthetic. Hidden lighting effects are also huge right now – carefully placed ribbon lights and compact spike light spots buried in foliage help create a stunning feature,” says Scott. When it comes to the materials you choose, it can be dependant on your location. “If you are lucky enough to live in a coastal area or have a swimming pool, you’ll want to be sure your fittings are made from ‘marine air’ safe materials,” says Scott. To avoid rust, corrosion or deterioration, Jade suggests choosing fittings in “316 stainless steel, copper, brass, polycarbonate, concrete or glass”. All of which are popular at the moment, along with resin and fibreglass. “We’re seeing a growing trend towards modern designs, but in materials that would normally be perceived as ‘traditional’,” explains Scott.

Serves 4 (see opposite)

STYLING PROPS (THROUGHOUT) SPLENDID WREN CERAMICS

1⅔ cups (400g) brown rice, soaked, drained (see tip) 2 tbsp sushi vinegar or rice wine vinegar 1 tbsp peanut oil 1 tsp sesame oil 2 cups (150g) fresh shiitake or oyster mushrooms 4 tbsp unpasteurised white miso paste (see tip) ½ daikon, spiralised to form noodles or grated 1 small Lebanese cucumber, shaved into ribbons with a peeler, mandolin or spiraliser 2 colourful radishes (red, rainbow or black), thinly sliced on a mandolin 50g dried wakame, soaked, drained (see tip)

1 tbsp kimchi 2 spring onions, cut into matchsticks 1 handful coriander leaves 1 tsp dried dulse flakes (see tip) 1 sheet nori, coarsely torn 1 handful snow pea shoots 1 tbsp toasted white sesame seeds 1 tbsp toasted black sesame seeds Dressing 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp sesame oil 1 tbsp tamari 2 tsp mirin Juice of ½ lime ½ garlic clove, minced ½ tsp minced ginger

STEAMED BABY VEGETABLES WITH GHEEONNAISE & LIME

Serves 4 (see below) Baby seasonal vegetables, including turnips, parsnips, carrots, beetroot, leeks, spring garlic, broccolini, asparagus, fennel, peas, beans and lettuce Lime wedges, to serve

Gheeonnaise 1 organic egg 1 tsp white wine vinegar 1 sprig thyme or tarragon, leaves picked 1 small garlic clove 100ml ghee, in liquid form (see tip)

1. To make the gheeonnaise, place all ingredients except ghee into a jug and blend with a stick blender to incorporate (you can use a whisk, but a stick blender is far easier). With the blender running, slowly drizzle in ghee until creamy and emulsified. Adjust seasoning to your liking. Remember that it needs to be kept at a warm room temperature to remain in its mayo-like form. 2. Steam baby vegetables until just cooked. Serve in a bowl or on a platter with the gheeonnaise and lime wedges. TIP: To make ghee, melt 500g unsalted organic butter in a saucepan over low heat. When fully melted and starting to bubble, give it an initial stir. As a crust begins to form on surface, skim it off. Keep skimming crust until liquid is totally clear. Strain through paper towel or muslin into a jar, cover and store for a month at room temperature, or in fridge indefinitely. This makes 2 cups (500ml) of ghee. >

STEAMED BABY VEGETABLES WITH GHEEONNAISE & LIME

1. Cook rice in plenty of salted boiling water for 15-20 minutes – you want to retain some texture but definitely don’t undercook it. Drain well, then stir the vinegar through. Cool. 2. Heat a char-grill pan over high heat to smoking hot. Mix peanut and sesame oils. Brush mushrooms with oils, then grill on both sides for 1-2 minutes each side, or until they char nicely but maintain their raw quality through the middle. Slice into thick, bite-sized pieces. 3. To make the dressing, whisk all ingredients well and leave to infuse until they are needed. 4. Smear serving bowls with a tablespoonful of miso, or place a small serving dish of miso in the base of each bowl. Divide rice among bowls, then add daikon, cucumber and radish. Nestle wakame, kimchi and mushrooms around, then spoon the dressing over the top. Garnish with spring onion, coriander, dulse, nori, shoots and sesame seeds – and prepare to not be bored senseless by brown rice! TIPS: Find unpasteurised white miso paste and dried dulse flakes at health-food shops and Egg Of The Universe, eggoftheuniverse.com. To soak and drain brown rice, soak it for 4-8 hours in filtered water, drain and rinse; otherwise, rinse it very well. To soak and drain dried wakame, soak it in boiling water for 3-5 minutes, then drain.

CLASSIC SIMPLE CAESAR SALAD

Serves 4 (see page 144) 2 slices sourdough bread (or a gluten-free bread worthy of this salad), cut into croutons 150ml olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 2 organic eggs 2 garlic cloves 4-6 good anchovies in olive oil

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce (preservative-free, if possible) 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 cup (100g) finely grated good-quality parmesan 1 large cos lettuce, outer leaves shredded, medium leaves torn, inner leaves left whole

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Toss bread with a drizzle of extra olive oil, spread on a baking tray and toast in the oven for about 5-10 minutes or until golden and crisp, turning halfway through. 2. Meanwhile, place eggs in a small saucepan of water over medium-high heat and bring to a simmer. Simmer for 2 minutes (you want them to be super-soft), then rinse under cold water to stop the cooking process. 3. Crush the garlic and anchovies together in a bowl, then whisk in Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, olive oil and half the parmesan. 4. Place lettuce in a serving bowl, break open the eggs and scoop the soft whites and yolks over the top. Pour the anchovy and parmesan dressing over and toss well, seasoning with freshly ground pepper. Scatter with croutons and remaining parmesan. Purists believe this salad is best without any further additions, and we agree!

WHOLE ROASTED FISH WITH SAUCE GRIBICHE

Serves 2–6, depending on the size of the fish (see page 145) 1 whole fish (snapper, barramundi or similar), cleaned (see tip) 1 lemon, thinly sliced 1-2 handfuls celery or fennel trimmings (depending on size of fish) 2 handfuls soft herb trimmings (such as parsley or dill), plus extra to serve Olive oil, for drizzling

Sauce gribiche 2 soft-boiled organic eggs 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp capers ¼ cup (60ml) olive oil 1 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley 1 tbsp chopped dill or fennel leaves

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. 2. Score the fish in 4-5cm intervals on the diagonal with a sharp knife. Line a baking tray with two sheets of foil, large enough to wrap the fish. Spread lemon, vegetable trimmings and herbs in the base and top with the fish. Drizzle with oil and season with salt, then bring the edges of the foil up and around the fish, folding the edges to seal. Bake for 30-45 minutes or until fish flakes away from the bone easily (adjust the time depending on the size of the fish). 3. Meanwhile, to make the sauce gribiche, break eggs and scoop

yolks into a bowl, reserving whites. Add mustard, lemon juice, capers and oil, and whisk to create a loose emulsion. Stir herbs through, then roughly chop egg whites and stir through. Season to taste. 4. Remove fish from foil, being careful of the steam, and transfer to a platter (or serve it in the baking tray). Top with some herb trimmings for colour and serve with sauce gribiche. TIP: As a guide, aim for 1kg of fish for two people, or up to 3kg of fish for six people or more.

PURPLE SWEET POTATO & OKRA LAKSA WITH RAW NOODLES

Serves 2 (see opposite) 1 lemongrass stalk (white part only), roughly chopped 50g ginger 25g fresh turmeric 1 onion, chopped 60g raw cashews, soaked for 4 hours, drained 1 long red chilli (plus small chillies to taste), chopped 2 tsp tamarind paste 1 tbsp coriander seeds 1 tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tbsp coconut oil 400ml coconut cream

1 purple sweet potato, peeled and cut into large dice 4 coriander roots 400g okra, chopped 2 tbsp sesame oil 1 lime 1 handful coriander 1 handful Thai basil ½ tsp each white and black sesame seeds Raw noodles 1 daikon 1 zucchini 1 carrot

1. Place lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, onion, cashews, chillies, tamarind paste and spices into a food processor and blend to a smooth paste, then add 1 teaspoon salt. 2. Heat coconut oil in a wok over medium heat, then add paste and stir for 1-2 minutes or until fragrant. Add coconut cream and 2½ cups (600ml) water, bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer. 3. Add sweet potato and coriander roots (bruise them before throwing them in) and simmer for about 10-15 minutes or until softened. Add okra and cook, stirring occasionally, for a further 5 minutes or until soup is thickened and okra is just cooked through. Remove from heat and check the seasoning – you want a balance of hot, sweet, salty and sour. 4. Makes about 1.5kg (see left) 1½ cups (220g) sunflower seeds ⅔ cup (105g) pumpkin seeds 4⅔ cups (420g) desiccated coconut 500g raw sprouted buckwheat

1 cup (170g) raisins 425g date paste (or simply deseed and mash medjool dates) 100ml brown rice syrup or maple syrup

1. Soak sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds in filtered water overnight to activate them. The next morning, drain seeds and mix with coconut, buckwheat and raisins in a large bowl. 2. In a separate container, stir date paste with 1¼ cups (310ml) water, then stir syrup through. Pour over seeds and buckwheat, and stir until thoroughly incorporated. 3. Preheat oven to 80°C. Spread granola out on a lined baking tray. Place tray in oven to dehydrate for 12 hours or overnight (it should be completely dry). Allow to cool, then break up the larger granola clumps with a spoon. 4. Granola will keep in an airtight container for a few weeks.

BRAZIL-NUT BROWNIE

Makes 18 pieces (see opposite) THE LOVE CUP

Serves 2 (see above) ¼ cup (40g) chia seeds 200ml coconut water ½ cup (45g) desiccated coconut Splash of maple syrup (optional) 2 mangoes, flesh diced

80g cashew cream (see tip) ⅔ cup (140g) mixed berries 80g activated buckwheat granola (see next column, or use your favourite store-bought granola)

1. Soak chia seeds overnight in coconut water to make a chia pudding (you can get away with much shorter than this but, ideally, soak them for at least an hour). Stir coconut through the pudding and add a splash of maple syrup and a pinch of salt, if so inclined. 2. To create the love cup, layer the ingredients so they look beautiful. Spoon the pudding into serving glasses, then add the rest of the ingredients in layers starting with the mango, then cashew cream and berries. Finally, scatter granola on top. TIP: To make cashew cream, soak 250g raw cashews in 2 cups (500ml) cold water overnight. Rinse nuts well, then place in a blender with 1 cup (250ml) fresh cold water and blend until light and creamy (scrape mix down with a spatula to help cream blend evenly). Add 2 tbsp maple syrup and a pinch of sea salt, and blend well to combine. This makes 2 cups (500ml). Keep in fridge for up to five days.

Grease a slice tin and line it with baking paper. Melt chocolate and coconut oil in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water (don’t let the bowl touch the water). Add chocolate mixture to the dry ingredients and stir to form a batter. Stir chia mix through the batter, then fold in brazil nuts. Pour batter into prepared tin. 4. Immediately before placing the brownie in the oven, reduce the oven temperature to 175°C – this will help form a nice crust. Place tin in oven and bake for 35 minutes or until a crust has formed, the brownie is cooked through and a skewer comes out mostly clean. 5. Remove brownie from oven, sprinkle with extra brazil nuts and lightly press them into the brownie with a spoon. Allow to cool in tin, then chill before cutting into 18 pieces.

Emerald Dream ART DECO MEETS MIAMI IN THIS RICHLY TEXTURED ENTERTAINER’S KITCHEN Words KYLIE JACKES Photography JACQUI TURK

hen Troy and husband Dan embarked on a renovation of their Federation bungalow, perched on Sydney’s Centennial Park, colour was key. “The whole place was based around incorporating black, brass, white and British racing green, which is my favourite colour,” says Troy, an artist. The jewel of the renovation was a kitchen which claims a prime spot in the newly extended rear of the heritage home and opens onto an alfresco area and pool. Enlisting Charlotte Riggs, brand director of Bondi Kitchens & Joinery, to bring their vision to life, the brief centred around an island bench swathed in marble and warmed by stained American oak cabinetry and joinery in Dulux Highland Green. “The kitchen had to be bold and command the space, but connect to the adjoining living and entertaining areas – and it does just that,” says Troy. Glamorous touches also included a striking ‘Peggy 9’ pendant light by Vistosi (try Studio Italia) and vintage emerald velvet bar stools Troy found online. “We’ve had lots of great parties here and the kitchen has been integral in creating a warm, inviting atmosphere,” he says. “We just love it.”

HANDLE FREE Do away with handles for a minimalist look. “Finger-pulls on drawers and cupboards create a sleek, timeless backdrop which allows the surface finish to star,” says Charlotte. “A bank of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in a beautiful timber can become a pseudo feature wall.” She suggests adding handles on large integrated appliance doors. “A sleek knurled pull provides pulling power for weightier doors and can be helpful for guests looking to locate the fridge,” she says.

BATHROOM IDEAS or Jade and Treaven, a simple project to enlarge their kitchen benchtop morphed into the complete remodel and renovation of the couple’s home in Sydney’s south (see the bathroom on page 168). “We threw around ideas to make improvements and decided to just do it all,” says Jade, who was then pregnant with their sixth child. The project was taken on by Emma Buchan and Jade Corcoran of EB Interiors, who reworked the split-level floor plan to gain rooms and storage. “A major change was moving the internal stairs to the centre of the house, which doubled the kitchen in size with the addition of two walk-in pantries and a deep island bench,” says Emma, who refreshed the previously dark palette with paint colour-matched to Taubmans Cotton Ball. Adds homeowner Jade: “I saw the ripple-effect detailing on Pinterest – it inspired the slatted timber that wraps around the island and hides the pantry doors.” The island has the best seats in the house. “The bench is chat and snack central,” says Jade. “We all hang out here.”

lacklustre kitchen is now the beating heart of parents of four Sarah and Jordan’s family home, thanks to a thoughtful makeover by interior designer Lisa Furtado. “The house was built in 1908 and boasted exquisite architectural detailing, but a 1990s renovation left the kitchen lacking charm,” she explains, of the historic beauty in San Francisco, USA. “Our goal was to give the kitchen personality while honouring the heritage of the house.” Without touching the footprint, Lisa capitalised on the room’s generous vertical planes. Floor-to-ceiling storage – complete with library ladder for easy access – optimises functionality without impacting flow in the walk-through space. The compact island accommodates more storage as well as garbage and compost drawers, plus space for stools under the cantilevered counter. “It’s serene, beautiful and highly functional,” says Sarah. “Many happy memories have been made here already.”

COLOUR ME HAPPY Fulfilling homeowners’ Sarah and Jordan’s brief for a “bright, happy” shade of blue on their cabinets, Lisa chose Benjamin Moore Stillwater (Bristol’s Outer Space is similar), which retains a sense of classic elegance. To introduce colour without compromising on style, Lisa suggests choosing hues with “grey undertones that make the colour feel sophisticated and stylish”.

BATHROOM IDEAS esigner Emma Buchan of EB Interiors worked some magic when transforming this Sydney home (see the kitchen on page 158) into a haven for clients Jade and Treaven. To capture views and abundant natural light on the upper level, existing internal stairs vanished, with the void converted into floor space for a decadent main bedroom and adjoining ensuite. “We have six kids ranging from a 14-year-old to our youngest who’s eight months, so we really wanted a space to escape, which felt like we were at a ritzy hotel,” shares Jade. To conjure a luxe atmosphere, a mix of tonal finishes and playful curves were introduced, including a bespoke vanity, double shower adorned in feature mosaics and a bath big enough for two. “The Apaiser stone bath had to be craned into the first floor prior to closing in the windows, which was quite a feat, but well worth it,” says Emma.

TRY TONAL

Play with a combination of shapes to create a unique feel and serve myriad purposes. “I like to introduce curves as they have a lovely softening effect both visually and practically,” explains Emma. “Here, rounded forms allow for better circulation around the end of the vanity and bath, with tapware and lighting continuing the subtle, feminine circular theme.”

Tasker Joinery, (02) 9540 4100, taskerjoinery.com.au.

For a chic look, try a tonal palette with metallic accents and texture. “Getting it right is all about restraint and balance,” says Emma. “Stick to three to five finishes and include a feature tile, such as a patterned mosaic, to avoid it looking bland.” In this ensuite, floor-to-ceiling ‘Tara’ Limestone from Pacifico Stone is complemented by Corian Organic ‘Pearl’ on the vanity and Surface Gallery Scarpa ‘Calacatta Oro’ mosaics in the shower.

73 “a simple way to ensure a confident and cohesive look is to extend your home's style into the bathroom" - Victoria kingsbury, senior features editor

current of grown-up glamour electrifies this alluring bathroom in homeowner Tristan’s four-level apartment in Johannesburg, South Africa. Unafraid to juxtapose materials, finishes and styles, the interior architect concedes he favours a more-is-more approach to design. “You could say I border on a maximalist approach,” he remarks. “My intention is to create immersive experiences. As seductive as stepping into a deep bath in flickering candlelight, the bathroom is a case in point. Here, large-format, wall-toceiling tiles evoke a moonless night and add drama, while freestanding pieces enhance the idea that this is a room as luxurious and considered as any other space in the home. The moody colours and finishes link back to the rest of the home, which has a palette that boldly celebrates the apartment’s natural dearth of light. The scheme suits Tristan, who’s rarely home before nightfall. He explains, “A dark sultry interior is more to my personal taste than light and airy.”

here’s a reason the Hamptons beach house from the 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give remains one of the most beloved “movie” homes of all time. For interior designer Justin Bishop’s clients, it inspired the design of their Melbourne home. “The house from the movie really stuck with us and after travelling down America’s east coast and seeing the classic, timeless architecture over there, we knew it’s what we wanted,” says the homeowner. Engaging Justin to devise a similar interior scheme for their home, stunning details and period features were carried through to the couple’s ensuite. “The brief revolved around classic simplicity, so white was a natural choice, teamed with beautiful fixtures, which add character and soul,” explains Justin. “Even on an overcast day, the ensuite feels fresh and light … we couldn’t be happier,” enthuses the homeowner. 92 WARM ACCENTS To imbue warmth, choose tapware with just the right amount of lustre. “My go-to finish is pewter (brushed nickel) as it has a softer, warmer look and as a living finish develops a lovely natural patina over time.” For a harmonious palette, carry the finish across accessories and hardware. Here, antique nickel wall lights from Memory Lane (left) and Armac Martin vanity drawer handles (below) complement the scheme.

93 TIMELESS PALETTE A white-on-white bathroom never goes out of style, as it’s inherently fresh and helps amplify the amount of light in the room. To further enhance the impression of spaciousness, Justin suggests pairing a white scheme with oversized mirrors. “Cooler whites tend to suit more modern styles, while a warmer neutral white such as Dulux Natural White used on the vanity [right] evokes timeless appeal.”

UNSUNG ICONS:

TIN SOLDIERS COMEDIAN DAVID SMIEDT TAKES AN IRREVERENT, BUT APPRECIATIVE, LOOK AT THE CLASSIC THINGS THAT DEFINE YOU-BEAUT AUSSIE LIFE ILLUSTRATION MATT COSGROVE

I

t is difficult to overstate how ubiquitous tin once was in Australian homes. We made our gutters out of it, and our toys. It was literally pressed into service as decorative ceiling motifs and as a roof. There are still fewer pleasures greater than having one between you and rain. So beloved was tin that it slid into our vernacular and remains there despite having been surpassed by the likes of aluminium. A cold can is still called a tinny. Ditto, a small runabout boat, and in supermarkets from Esperance to Emerald, you’ll still see an aisle dedicated to ‘tinned goods’. Blending malleability with durability and the ability to be mass produced, tin also proved to be ideal for painting and printing on. Although many tinned items were things of beauty – just look at the surviving Keen’s Curry Powder motif – they added a sense of visual clutter to the kitchen en masse. And so were hidden away in cupboards. If only there was some way to harness their practicality while adding to the cohesive aesthetics of a room, thought some savvy marketeer. The answer to this question turned out to be matching series of tins available in enough fashionable hues to complement any colour scheme. Form meets function meets fabulous. Noice. Unusual. Noice. The innovation didn’t end there. A logical question soon arose. How would people tell them apart in the kitchen and not end up with a handful of salt in the caramel by mistake – as if that would ever be delicious? “Ah,” said the boffins in R&D. “We will put the names of what each tin contains on the outside. In big embossed letters.” “But what if I’ve mislaid my glasses, or it’s dark, or I just like asking a series of annoying questions in meetings to make me look important?” said Gary from Marketing. “Fine,” said the R&D team. “We’ll make the containers in different sizes. That OK, Gary?” And so it came to pass that our homewares catalogues and, eventually, homes were filled with matching quartets or trios of tin soldiers bearing the legend ‘rice’, ‘sugar’, ‘salt’ or ‘flour’. It was always dry goods and, as the early serried ranks weren’t quite entirely moisture-resistant to our often-humid climate, one often encountered a surface crust that didn’t feel – or taste – like the rest of whatever foodstuff was contained therein.

Speaking of the wonders of oxidisation, these tin triptychs only looked better as they faded, sometimes blistered and often rusted. Because you can’t make patina in a factory. Tin eventually gave way to plastic and the colours of the 1970s such as tangerine, pistachio and chocolate. Let’s just say it was a more innocent time, when words like ‘phthalates’ were viewed as spelling mistakes and food was actually considered safer because it had been stored for long periods in plastic. For a minute there, they were briefly relegated to pantry obscurity as we went doolally for mason jars – but in recent years, the matching canister set has come storming back. Some are glass. That makes sense as you can see exactly what’s inside – that is, so long as you can tell the difference at a glance between icing sugar and flour. Other manufacturers have embraced the industrial chic of brushed metal, albeit with little transparent panels so that you can see exactly what your baking soda is up to.

Ceramic is another material making the matching canister set its own. Often topped with a cork lid, they are frequently finished in a white or off-white. All the better to contrast with a swirly black font denoting its contents. Said font is a considered choice to evoke the old-school almost-florid-but-not-quite handwriting your grandma might use to advertise her scones at a country fete. While she may be right on board for the writing, she would probably be less enthused when one of these ceramic canisters chipped on your Caesarstone or, worse, shattered on your terrazzo. And she would be absolutely correct when she muttered under her breath that this would never have happened with one of her old tin canisters. Spot on, Nanna, spot on.
