EDITOR’S LETTER
PHOTOGRAPHY (FROM TOP RIGHT) BRIGID ARNOTT, JOE SCHMELZER/ARMADILLO AND CO, ELSA YOUNG/FRANK FEATURES
WHERE THE HEART IS At HB, we’ve always known that home truly is where the heart sings. It’s our sanctuary away from the rest of the world, where we share each day with the people we love, watch our children grow into life-sized humans and create memory-making meals for family and friends. It’s the place we feel, quite literally, most at home. Recently, home has also become our refuge. “Staying home” has not only been an edict for us home bodies, but in this time of tackling COVID-19, it has also actually saved lives, and shown the best possible support to the amazing people on the frontline who continue to turn up to work each day and do the incredible things they do. At this time of staying in, the HB team has come together (from our living rooms, kitchen tables and studies) to do what we do best: provide inspiration for those projects you might want to tackle right now or the bigger ones you’ve been mindfully moodboarding. We’ve also worked to provide some breathing space to dream. Like me, you might be spending more time than usual contemplating how well the hardest-working spaces in your home work (hello, bathroom), so from page 163, we have the most stunning bathrooms to help you create a dream sanctuary. And, from page 39, we have all the inspiration you need to put together a great home office. As I write this, from our outdoor lounge, I’m thankful for these moments of taking a breath. There have been some lovely times – sitting at this very spot under fairy lights and festoons, happy in the knowledge that yes, my two children will be home with us for dinner tonight (and it’s Saturday); hearing a family just over the fence gathering and laughing around their new fire pit, and spying a mum and dad happily playing a gentle game of make believe with their toddlers in their front yard. Yes, this pandemic has changed our lives in so many ways. But one thing it hasn’t changed is the importance of home, and the true value of the most important things in it. Until next month, from our home to yours.

SURF PHOTOGRAPHER AND FOUNDER OF BEACH BLOG-TURNED-GALLERY AQUABUMPS, EUGENE TAN, CHATS TO HB ABOUT HIS PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLABORATION WITH WA WINEMAKERS CAPE MENTELLE TO MARK THEIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY How do you hope people respond to your photos? Eugene: “My images are always intended to take you to the beach, where you can feel the sun on your skin, the salt and the ocean; the simple things we all cherish about summer. I want people to feel happy.” You were born in Western Australia. What does photographing Margaret River for Cape Mentelle mean to you? “I spent a lot of my younger years around Margaret River. I learnt to surf there; it’s such a special part of Australia I have a deep connection to. Cape Mentelle was always the top winery down there, so it was an honour to work with them on this project.” How does Margaret River differ to your local Bondi scene? “Margaret River is so raw. The beaches are pristine, and you barely see people on the shoreline. The waves are incredible and usually much bigger than Bondi. There’s so much more power – which I love.” What’s the biggest risk you’ve taken for a photograph? “The chopper stalled when I was hanging out of it shooting over Capri in Italy a few years ago – I’ve been shooting aerials for 12 years and that’s never happened. The pilot couldn’t really speak English either, so I had no idea what was going on. I’ve never been so happy to be back on ground [than] after that aerial shoot.” What are three elements you look for when capturing an image? “Light, unique subject matter and unique camera angles.” The perfect wine to indulge in when relaxing by the ocean? “I recently tried the Cape Mentelle Rose – it was terrific. I’d love a glass, at sunset, at Margaret’s main break.”
ART ATTACK Spread creativity by taking your artwork off the walls and layering it over your bed, with homewares label Greenhouse Interiors’ first collection of art-inspired linen. “This range is a collaboration with our top-selling artists, seeing their work designed into luscious French flax linens,” says designer Julia Green. AT A GLANCE Who: Artists (and mother-daughter duo) Charlie and Mieke De Deyne. What they do: Make ceramics and teach pottery classes at their studio, The Ceramic House. Where: Newstead, Brisbane. Why they do it: “I love the tactile feeling of clay,” says Charlie. “I like the limits of clay and how you can build upon or take it away; it’s so malleable.” Visit: theceramichouse.studio Follow: @the_ceramic_house. >

hen Mieke De Deyne turned 40, the talented Queensland artist received a life-changing gift from her husband, Ferre – a pottery wheel. Before long, the then oil painter’s new-found pottery obsession prompted an overhaul of her home studio on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, pushing her paints aside. Her daughter, Charlie, was also left spellbound by the charm of ceramics. “My first time on the pottery wheel, I was 10 years old,” explains Charlie. “My mama showed me how to do it. I loved it because I was always a messy kid; I liked getting covered in mud and I enjoyed being in the studio.” Mieke’s passion for ceramics influenced her to undertake a Master of Fine Arts and, once again, Charlie followed in her mum’s creative footsteps. “I enrolled to do a Bachelor of Fine Art
gorgeous hinterland has a lot to answer for. “Our signature colour is turquoise, because Mama is influenced by the colours of nature and the beach, whereas my inspiration is drawn from clean lines and Brutalist architecture,” she says. Demand for the label’s stunning tableware only grew as friends and clients began asking the mother-daughter duo to run lessons in their beautiful studio. As the small space could never host classes, in 2017 they decided to transform Mas & Miek into a full-blown brand, The Ceramic House, encompassing a studio, store, workshop and cafe in the Brisbane suburb of Newstead. “It became a lot bigger than we anticipated, but we’re happy with the community we’ve created,” says Charlie, who lives nearby. Mieke, who remains on the coast, comes to teach a few days each week.
“CERAMICS TEACHES YOU PATIENCE. IT’S A PROCESS-ORIENTED CRAFT; YOU HAVE TO ENJOY THE STEPS AND GO WITH THE PROCESS” ~ Charlie at a different university in Brisbane,” says Charlie. “At one point, we were both studying art at the same time!” Graduating with strengthened skills, the pair began collaborating in their home studio and eventually founded the ceramics label Mas & Miek in 2010. “The ‘mas’ comes from ‘mas mas’, a nickname I’ve had since I was a baby,” explains Charlie. “It means ‘little girl’ in my Belgium parents’ language, which is Flemish.” The duo’s distinctive ceramics style emerged as Charlie immersed herself in the throwing process – perfecting the shape and forms of the vessels – while Mieke developed the natural-made glazes. “There are these really beautiful reactions in her glazes, whether it’s a burst of colour or crystalline effects, or a crackle,” says Charlie. As for a source of inspiration, their Brutalist family home in the
“I love seeing the students progress over time and how they push their practice in new ways,” says Charlie, who believes anyone can learn as long as they have enough patience for the lengthy process of drying and firing each piece. This slow nature of hand-building clay is a welcome respite from daily life for most of their students. “The studio means different things to different people,” she says. “For some people it’s to learn the craft, whereas for others it’s their relaxation time and even a little bit of therapy.” For Charlie and Mieke, their pottery practice is evidence of their unbreakable bond – a precious gift that grew from a single pottery wheel. “I’m lucky,” says Charlie, “we’ve always been close.” While Mas & Miek’s classes are temporarily on hold, try their online course, clayclassesathome.com.

again?” ponders Charlie, pictured practising throwing on one of 10 pottery wheels in the light-filled studio. “I think it’s because there’s such a rise in technology that people are really craving to get back to craft and to hand-make.”

VINTAGE HEART BUILT WITH LOVE AND SALVAGED CENTURY-OLD MATERIALS, A BEAUTIFULLY CREATED HOME IN TASMANIA IS THE PERFECT RETREAT FOR ITS HISTORY-LOVING OWNER AND HER FAMILY
NOSTALGIC NOD Lovingly built with reclaimed materials, homeowner Amanda and Skip’s home on the outskirts of Launceston echoes the past,
but still offers the convenience and practicality of modern-day living for the couple and their guests, including their daughter’s Staffy, Theo (top left, in the dining room). Textures abound in the 17-year-old home, thanks to Amanda’s collections: on the dining table, old stoneware jugs display florals (top right), while taxidermy birds from Austria, bought on Ebay, paired with Indian exercise batons from the Evandale market, create a unique vignette (below right). In the atmospheric front sitting room (below left), a model ship from Amanda’s parents’ store, Longford Antiques, calls to mind a gentleman’s den, and a cabinet she painted in Noir by Jolie Paint reveals her penchant for boldly reimagining old pieces.

N
o need to take your shoes off, it’s a country house!” says Amanda, as she welcomes guests into her Georgian-style home on the outskirts of Launceston. The property, designed and built by the homeowner and her husband, Skip, looks as if it has been standing firm in the ground for 100 years or more. Although it was built only 17 years ago, the combined age of the materials used amounts to centuries passed. Every internal door in the home has come from the old hydroelectric substations in Launceston while the exterior is made from salvaged century-old Tasmanian Machen’s bricks. “It feels good to give purpose to old materials,” explains the history lover, who grew up spending her holidays restoring furniture in her parents’ antique store. During the build, Amanda quickly discovered that working with recycled materials can be labour-intensive, making use of the barn that was completed four months into the 13-month construction. “It was becoming too much to juggle our two young daughters and the construction, so we sold our cottage in the city and moved into
the barn to be closer to the site,” she recalls. The family lived in the fully equipped two-storey barn for nine months while work on the house continued. Besides assistance with elements of the roofing, the couple completed the bulk of the work themselves. “Every single facet of this build was time consuming, there are no two ways about it,” says Amanda, who acknowledges that by using reclaimed materials and doing the work themselves, they were able to keep their costs down. “That was the most important factor in the whole process – we had a budget and we were going to stick to it.” After nine years of country living, the family moved back to the city while daughters Chloe and Amy finished school and Amanda established her store, The Vintage Rose. However, once their girls had flown the coop, the couple returned to their home in the country. “We realised we missed our place,” she says. With a heavy heart, Amanda recently closed her shopfront in Launceston, but relishes more time spent in this special place. “We built this house with our own bare hands, so we have a huge emotional attachment to it,” she says. “It feels like home.” >

vegetable patches across their eight acres of land, the couple is edging closer to becoming fully self-sufficient. KITCHEN STORAGE
When Amanda found the armoire (left) at Armitage Auctions, the timber’s tone was very orange, so she used white finishing wax from Jolie to give the piece a beached look. The armoire offers storage for plates and cutlery, while the top of it is the perfect spot to showcase French stoneware, some of it from Red Fox Antiques in Launceston. KITCHEN
Handy Skip built their kitchen (opposite) using recycled blackwood and cowrie pine. Amanda added her own flair by washing the central island in Wattyl’s Antique Linen. The basic pendants were also reinvented by Amanda, who used Instant Rust paint from Porter’s. “I could not find lighting I liked, so I decided to make some,” she says. But when my mother passed away in 2014, I just had this desire to move back to where I grew up.” After searching the city’s coastal suburbs for two years with her husband, Ian, Annette chanced upon a property that caught her eye immediately. The relatively new, two-level abode was not exactly to the couple’s more traditional tastes. Nevertheless, there was much for them to love – particularly the home’s soaring ceilings, airy layout and exquisite arched windows flooding the living zones with daylight.“It had a perfect floor plan for us, but the home – which was about 10 years old – had been built in a Spanish Costa Del Sol style with lots of dark wood, creamy yellow, ornate ironwork and columns,” recalls Annette. “The house ended up being passed in at auction, but I kept coming back to it and started thinking there was a lot that we could do to make it more ‘us’. We made an offer, which was accepted, and it was time to realise our vision for the house.” And so the makeover process began, with Annette and Ian engaging renowned interior design practice Austin Design Associates. For both parties, it proved to be a happy meeting of minds. “Our first impression of the house was that it had great flow and good ‘bones’, however it felt tired and dated,” says interior designer Sylvanna Mitri. “Our brief was to create a minimal interior with an equal level of sophistication and luxury.” Over seven months, the transformation of the home, which incorporated lashings of white and misty grey, a gleaming new Carrara marble kitchen, solid pale oak parquetry flooring and dramatic steel-framed windows and French doors, was completed. With its interiors filled with the couple’s long-treasured collectibles and a curated array of beautiful new pieces, the home is infused with a timeless sense of tranquillity, warmth and style; essentially an elegant yet unpretentious abode for the owners and their family to enjoy. “The home seems to have taken on a new character,” reflects Annette. “It’s not particularly ‘of the moment’ but, to us, it has a lovely feel and I just love coming home.”

LIVING IN THE LIGHT A breathtaking vista cascades into this soaring home that is as much a gallery for art aficionados Candace and
William, as a functional family home for the couple and their three young children, Max, 12, Tessa, nine, and Stella, four. “We have a lot of glazing and no eaves,” says Candace, who was determined to retain the original 1970s window, with its grid of timber frames – a standout feature of the Cape Town abode (above). Furnishings combine mid-century gems with reupholstered pieces from the family’s original collection, such as the shapely green velvet armchairs (try Gumtree or Ebay). Natural textures, including the stone-coloured sofa (try the ‘Hadley’ sofa in Crescent Natural from Coco Republic), handwoven grass rug (get the look with the Natural Gazil Magic Rug from Temple & Webster) and timber panelling, create a muted, neutral palette that celebrates the surrounding landscape and mirrors the artwork by Rosie Mudge (opposite). >

andace and William’s first impression of their future home was somewhat underwhelming. “It looked like a school building,” says Candace, with a laugh, of the two-storey, 1970s house located in Cape Town, South Africa. Nevertheless, “it had a wonderful sense of space”, she recalls. “And it’s right at the foot of Table Mountain.” A terraced rocky garden with a beautiful stone staircase seemed to draw the mountain right down to the edge of the house, but somehow, perhaps because of its not-so-elegant architecture, its potential had been overlooked. Candace and William weren’t going to make that mistake. “I just remember being astonished at the views,” says Candace, an art gallery owner who was also able to appreciate some of the late mid-century features in the property.

They closed the deal, but she and William didn’t rush into renovating, choosing to live in the home for three years. Pressing pause suited Candace, who was busy launching her art gallery, then energised by its success, she was ready for the next challenge – a renovation and a baby, their third. “I was excited to start the project,” she says, explaining that knowing their family was growing came in handy when planning bedrooms. The couple worked with architects Stuart Thompson and Matt Pretorius of STARC to transform the house into the dream Candace had been nurturing in her imagination. The result is a remarkable alteration, retaining many of the late modernist features Candace and William had grown fond of, such as the fireplace, and stairway with its glazed facade to allow those mountain views. >

Blonde wood tones pop against dark cabinetry in the luxe and light kitchen (above), which opens partially to the lounge. A low-profile breakfast bar demarcates the spaces, while keeping the view of the trees unobscured, and is also an ideal spot for William to catch up on family admin. Stokperd stools (try ‘Hendrix’ Bar Stools in Tan Leatherette from Life Interiors) are a chic match to the bench and a trio of pendants introduce curves to the streamlined space (get the look with the ‘Marcel’ 300mm pendant in Clear/Brass from Beacon Lighting).

Furnished predominantly with mid-century pieces that are right at home amid an eclectic collection of contemporary, clean-lined items, this open-plan space (opposite) is softened by the contoured sofa by interior designer Christine Joubert (the Modern Curved Sofa by Mark Alexander Design has a similar look). Christine also designed the daybed (to get the look try Brosa’s ‘Macintosh’ daybed in French Beige fabric). A portrait of Christine’s late mother as a child (artist unknown) fills the space above the sideboard, its pops of green hinting at the verdant scene beyond the window. POOLSIDE
A glass facade floods the house with beautiful soft light – ideal for displaying the couple’s art collection (above). Two sleek outdoor chairs on the deck add an elegant touch (try the ‘Studio’ Wire Outdoor Lounge Chair in Black from Zanui).
It also allowed soft, natural light to pour in. The
couple largely stripped the remaining interiors, expanding the footprint to unlock the dwelling’s hidden potential. Its new, sleek, horizontal lines also finally undid the impression that the house seemed to loom over them, which had always unnerved Candace. Slatted timber screens provide relief from the sun in summer, and clever sheltering devices offer protection from the wind to create cosy, all-weather nooks. “That’s the benefit of living in the space for three years,” reflects Candace. “We knew what the elemental challenges were.” Inspired by the stonework around the fireplace, the couple added a vast Mondrian-like arrangement of windows to let natural light flood deep into the home via the gorgeous double-volume lounge. “I love furniture that is fitted,” says Candace, who incorporated built-in window seats and daybeds
into the bedrooms and study. In other spaces, she worked with interior designer and stylist Christine Joubert, who helped bring together a combination of new and vintage furniture pieces to complement their existing collected furnishings and, of course, the works of art. Restored modernist pieces picked up at auctions rub shoulders with more contemporary works, igniting a lovely dialogue between past and present. Perhaps inevitably, the house has evolved into a gallery in its own right. Mindful of the lack of wall space in many extensively glazed contemporary homes, Candace ensured the renovation balanced the breathtaking views with plenty of space for art and day-to-day living. With its glorious light and ample wall space – from little nooks to generous expanses, such as the stairwell – it’s a family home that offers scope for art, and the art of life. >

SITTING PRETTY In Olivera and Bob’s sun-kissed Brisbane home, architectural
details such as the deep verandah, James Hardie Linea weatherboard cladding (opposite) and casement-style windows helped Bob achieve his vision of a new build that sits comfortably amid surrounding character homes. An extra wide front door painted in an inky Dulux Ebony high gloss is a stylish surprise against the serene exterior palette (Dulux Tranquil Retreat Half, with trims in Dulux Lexicon Half). Beyond the threshold, the interiors are just as welcoming. “We’re big readers, so having a library was important to us,” explains Oli of this colourful corner (below), where the false balcony frames the treetop setting and enhances the city views, and the ‘Chippendale’ lounge chairs from Xavier Furniture make a stunning statement. >
O
livera and her husband, Bob, are hardly the first Sydneysiders to be lured to Queensland by the promise of a warmer climate and lower house prices. But back in the early 2000s, Bob also had his heart set on leaving the corporate world to pursue a career in the building industry. Today, he is co-partner of an award-winning construction company and, after 17 years of building for others, he’s just completed the couple’s long-awaited dream home in a riverside suburb of Brisbane. “Though I grew up in Sydney, I’ve always loved traditional Queenslanders,” says Oli, as she’s usually known. “Our first home together was a tiny terrace, one room wide and very dark. A sun-drenched timber house really appealed to me.” Step one was finding the right location. “One of the first blocks we viewed had these amazing vistas of the city, as well as the surrounding suburbs,” she recalls. “All the tin roofs in the undulating greenery reminded me of a painting. There were around 30 other families at the viewing though, and I didn’t think we stood a chance.” Fortunately, the pair secured the block and the 12-month build started almost immediately. “With Bob being the builder, the process itself ran very smoothly,” says Oli. Council regulations dictated that the home blend in with surrounding character homes, which suited the couple perfectly. “In fact, I wanted people – even visiting tradies – to mistake it for a renovated Queenslander, not a new build,” adds Bob. The classic exterior beautifully fulfills his wish, but beyond the generously proportioned front door, visitors are greeted with a sight that’s uncommon in a traditional Queenslander; an eye-catching six-metre high, stone-clad fireplace that soars up into the living room’s double height, light-filled void. “We had this cute little pot-belly stove in our first Sydney terrace and Bob, to this day, does fireplaces in most of his homes,” says Oli. “People think you don’t need one in Brisbane, but in winter we much prefer watching the fire to watching the television.” Natural materials were also non-negotiable for the couple. Alongside the exquisite ‘Apollo’ natural stone walling selected for the fireplace, American Oak graces the floors and Bianco Venato marble makes a gleaming feature of the benchtops. “Natural finishes are like a work of art, you never tire of looking at them,” muses Oli. “The marble is a little precious though,” she concedes with a smile, “but if you’re happy to mop up spills quickly, it’s well worth it.” When they were ready to decorate the interiors, the owners called upon Marion Taylor of Tailored Home Styling to help them achieve a relaxed resort vibe. “We wanted a light-filled space that made you feel not only at home, but on holidays as soon as you stepped through the door,” sums up Oli. “This is our dream Queenslander and I can’t imagine we’ll be moving for a very long time.” ENTRY Puppies Piper and Harley relax in the expansive entrance hall
(top left), styled sparely with a wicker ‘Kubu’ bench and a ‘Martinique’ mirror, both from Provincial Home Living. Unusually, the ceilings were lowered. “We wanted to make an even greater impact once you step from the entry into the double-height living area,” explains Bob. KITCHEN Avid entertainer Oli (pictured) really loves to cook – “It might be my Serbian heritage,” she laughs– so an ergonomically designed kitchen (left) was an essential. Bob barracked for the cabinetry by Garsden & Clarke Kitchens to be painted in Dulux Black. “I wanted white, but now can’t imagine it any other way,” she says. The island, in Dulux Vivid White, creates a stark contrast, while the counters, topped with Bianco Venato marble sourced by SNB Stone, and a glass and antique-brass ‘Garrison’ hurricane (used as a vase) from Boyd Blue, add a glamorous touch.

TWO BY DESIGN First-time homeowners Jamie and Az (opposite,
from left) honed their creative talents and designed their Nordic dream home from scratch, in Melbourne. While the pair share a passion for Scandinavian interiors, according to Jamie, Az takes more risks. When Az suggested the Muuto ‘Under The Bell’ pendant light (below) for the dining space, Jamie thought it was too big, but grew to love it. “It emits a beautiful light and helps define the zone,” explains Jamie. “And we love that it’s made from recycled plastic bottles.” Taking centrestage is a leggy Bok oak table from Ethnicraft with a matching bench. “We wanted an earthy, relaxed feeling, so we chose a bench instead of six chairs, which would have made it more formal and ‘separate’,” says Az. “Incredibly comfortable” Globe West chairs enhance the stylish space. >
W
hen friends visit Az and Jamie’s newly built abode in Melbourne’s western suburbs, there is no need for the couple to say “make yourselves at home”. Their Scandinavian-inspired interiors exude such serenity, people say they just want to put their feet up and relax. “It makes us very happy to think we’ve created such a welcoming space,” says Az, with a smile. “We’ve always been drawn to this aesthetic and the lifestyle it represents: The raw earthy textures, clean lines, beautiful blonde timber and the sense of unity with nature and the feeling that creates.” This is more than a mere nod to Nordic; the duo infused every beautifully styled room with a sense of harmony, or lagom, as the Swedes say: not too much, not too little, just right. While Az and Jamie both have corporate management jobs, they have always nurtured their creative sides. “It’s important for us to have that balance in our lives,” explains Az, who embarked on a part-time interior design course when the build began. “Jamie is a photographer and I have always had a knack for design.” In 2016 they started to document their journey on Instagram for their family and friends and, to their surprise, it gained attention – today they have about 32,000 followers and a creative design studio called Haus Of Cruze. “We put on our creative heads when we get home from work and we do makeovers and fit-outs for clients at weekends,”explains Jamie. Their recent wedding gave them another project to juggle.
“I BELIEVE IN SPENDING MONEY ON BIG PIECES AND SWAPPING SMALLER THINGS AS TRENDS CHANGE” ~ AZ LOUNGE ROOM A comfortable spot to unwind is high priority for the busy couple – and their toy cavoodle, Bella, who has hijacked the King Living ‘Neo’ sofa (above). Cushions from Norsu Interiors, a coffee table from Globe West (adorned with striking king proteas from Say It With Flowers) and the ‘Magic’ rug from The Rug Collection make for a cosy zone, but the biggest consideration is lighting. “We steered away from putting thousands of downlights all over the house, and created pockets of light to create a mood,” explains Az, of the ‘Wall Step’ light by Volker Haug. “This light was a non-negotiable and is probably the star of the show in this area,” says Jamie. “It’s expensive, which is why we ended up with the Kmart side table,” he adds with a laugh.

When Az and Jamie were ready to purchase their first home, they soon discovered that building a property in an up-and-coming area was a much more affordable option. “It also gave us more scope with interiors and control over the orientation of the house to maximise the northern light,” says Jamie. Eventually they came across the perfect block of land on a small, friendly estate and, in June 2017, Boutique Homes began constructing one of the company’s pre-designed houses: a light-filled, three-bedroom, singlestorey property. “As we were moving further out it was important to have bedrooms for people to stay,” explains Az. “We’re not having any kids, so we like to surround ourselves with friends and family, and spending time with them and entertaining is how we love to relax.” To enhance their Scandinavian vision, the pair upgraded most of their fixtures and finishes. “We increased the height of the doorframes to accentuate spaciousness and added skylights to eliminate any dark areas and chose premium finishes in the kitchen and master bathroom,” says Jamie. “We entertain a lot and I love cooking, so it’s more sociable with one big space. We also have a butler’s pantry to hide all the ugly stuff and keep the kitchen clutter-free.” When it came to styling their home, the couple used their talent for combining investment pieces with more affordable items – mixing the likes of Ikea with Ethnicraft and Kmart with Globe West. They even collaborated with Nordik Living to design a striking entertainment unit and sideboard (previous page). “We feel lucky to be able to do what we love creatively, away from our day jobs,” reflects Az. “But I think what I’m most proud of is that when we walk into our home we can wholeheartedly say that we did it together.”
KITCHEN In their mission to create a functional, “less-is-more” space, Az
and Jamie chose a simple white kitchen, using Wattyl Magic White warmed with timber accents (below). They upgraded the cabinetry to Polytec’s timber-effect Ravine range, which has a soft-to-touch feel and a raised profile, bringing textural contrast to the smooth finishes. The couple’s Uniqwa ‘Tractor’ bar stools provide a comfy place to perch and are the perfect foil for edges and lines. “We love their natural earthiness and that they age and change,” says Jamie. “They are quality pieces we’ll have for a long time.” A few premium appliances from Ilve, along with a sprinkling of Nordic-style homewares, such as Norsu’s ‘Menu’ grinders, complete this sociable space. >

The Easycraft ‘Easy VJ’ panels in Jamie and Az’s home add texture and style to their walls and the kitchen island, which is painted in Dulux Clay Pipe to contrast the otherwise white interior. Easy to install, the panels are popular for Nordic looks, but they also enhance many styles, including Hamptons and ‘coastal’. Available at Bunnings. Visit easycraft.com.au.

“Because it’s our personal space, we deliberately designed the master bedroom (opposite & above left) to be more masculine, with darker accent colours,” says Az, referencing the tan leather Nathan + Jac cushion, Maker And Hound bedside cabinet and Ikea black floor lamp. Evocative artworks above the bed are all characteristics of Scandi interiors and mostly connected to nature. “The broom is a photo of mine, Az drew the face and others are of Scandinavia,” says Jamie. “We like to tell a story with our galleries – this one has personal references and pictures that resonate with the tree, a longifolius ficus, next to our bed.” GUEST BEDROOM
This tranquil room (left) promises family and friends a dreamy sleep on the ‘Spindle’ bed frame from

Beacon Lighting pendants hang above bedside tables from Ikea, while plants and prints perch on ledges to add personality. “We use these Ikea picture ledges a lot as they make it easy to change things up – we get bored easily,” smiles Az. The central female image is from Olive Et Oriel. STUDY
The workspace (above) celebrates Scandi hallmarks of simplicity, functionality and an abundance of plants. Jamie says, “The decor is intentionally monochromatic as I find it easy to work in.” His study features an Ikea desk, Globe West chair and Benny Planter in White from Middle Of Nowhere. “I chose prints that were a little edgier and modern, too – we got the portrait online from The Print Emporium,” he says. >

Jamie and Az’s island bench is a much-loved social hub; for catching up over coffee or for gathering around with friends as the couple prepares dinner. They chose the modern matt finish of Caesarstone in ‘Fresh Concrete’ for the island and benchtops, both here and in the butler’s pantry. “We also used it in the bathrooms to create harmony and continuity throughout the house,” adds Az pictured right, with Jamie and Bella .

Az and his husband, Jamie, both of whom work in corporate management and also run the design studio Haus Of Cruze (@hausofcruze); along with their toy cavoodle, Bella. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ROOM?
Jamie: “The living area – it’s where we entertain our friends and spend time together. I love the connection to the outdoor space… it’s light and airy but still feels cosy.” Az: “The master suite – it’s like waking up in a luxury retreat every day, and I’ve never had a bedroom big enough for a king-size bed, ensuite, walk-in robe and reading chair. I love it.” WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS TO BRING MORE LIGHT INTO A HOME?
Az: “To bring light into any dark areas we installed Opal Lite dome skylights. They look good and work really well but are more costeffective than vaulted skylights.” WHERE DO YOU BUY YOUR GREAT ARTWORKS?
Jamie: “Mainly from websites that sell prints that work with our style: desenio.com.au, oliveetoriel.com, theprintemporium.com.au, foto-factory.com and society6.com.” FLOOR Porcelain timber-look tiles from Surfaces by Hynes.

build A VISION We can live more responsibly within our homes when we consider that our decisions have an impact not just on the world today, but on the form it will take tomorrow. So let’s consider our legacy. What mark do we want to leave on the world? What gift do we have to give? To this end, we can consider the Japanese concept of ikigai – a reason for being. It is based upon the idea of what we consider to be of value in our lives and what gives them meaning. Let us consider the contribution we want to make. When it comes to our homes, can we create them in a way that makes a positive contribution – buildings and spaces that others want to maintain or preserve, for example? Can we embrace choices that will withstand trends or at least won’t deplete the world’s resources irreparably? Our vision is our guide and compass to living in a way that is more aligned with our values.
“Wh e n we create u sing our val ue s as a gu i de , our h om e s can becom e m or e m eanin gf ul" ~ n atalie Preserving the past while looking to the future was a high priority for the owners of this 1oo-year-old home in Mallorca, Spain (left & above) – a sentiment shared by the owner of the Danish cottage (opposite), who gravitated towards using natural and raw materials in the interior of her home, which is also imbued with a sense of history.

DEVELOP A VALUE FRAMEWORK When we gravitate towards making change in our lives, we do so in the hope they will be better. But how do we know which path to take? We find our way when we establish the same framework for our lives as for the homes we’re creating. First, we envisage the big picture, then lay the foundations and build the framework to make improvements step by step. When it comes to our lives, once we have created a vision, we should consider what we stand for – our personal value system – and this becomes the framework that guides our decision making. So what do we value? What is most important? For many of us, it might be family or the future, but it can also be nature or community. We can value more than one element, although sometimes we have to prioritise one over another. >
“ g i ve ca r e f u l t h o u g h t t o w h e n t o s ay y e s a n d w h e n t o s ay n o " ~ n ata li e
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY Let’s consider who benefits most from many of our daily decisions. It’s good to question if what we desire is a need or a want before we make any purchase. We can also build a pause into our decision-making process. Do we need to move house or build a bigger one? Do we need to make structural or cosmetic changes? And, if we do, can we make them more responsibly? Can we wait? Are we opting for timeless choices that will withstand trends? Throughout the world, previous generations built structures and furniture, rugs, pots and much more in a slow and considered way. These buildings and objects have lasted for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of years. Given all we have access to, is this not still possible? We also have the ability to choose our response – from what we believe to how we behave. We can cultivate self-awareness. Pay attention, be proactive and do the work. Small steps lead to consistent results. Good habits yield good results.
The family homestead atop this gorgeous property in the Byron Bay hinterland (above & opposite) was renovated using as many old and recycled materials as possible – for both sustainability’s sake, as well as adding a sense of history.
“Let's care more about what we value and le ss about what's not
FOCUS ON PRIORITIES Once we have a clear understanding of our values and purpose, we can set boundaries around how we live our lives. Our attention and self-control are under siege from the moment we wake until just before sleep. Ask anyone what matters most to them and the answer is easy. However, if we look at how we spend our time, our days are filled with contradictions. The data is clear. We are addicted to our devices. We know the truth, even if we sometimes struggle to admit it. Yet, how much time do we spend completely engaged with our family on a daily basis? Our homes are ideally placed to create boundaries. Devices can be left at the front door, and mealtimes and gatherings reserved for real-life connection. Bedrooms can also be preserved as sanctuaries from technology.
worth our tim e or money"

SCENE SETTING:
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION IT’S TIME TO SWAP YOUR MOVIE TICKET FOR A SEAT IN THE GREATEST CINEMA ON EARTH – YOUR OWN HOME Words VANESSA KEYS
S
nacks within arms reach, a clear view of the screen and no-one noisily crunching popcorn behind you – having an immersive cinema experience in the comfort of your own home has never been so tempting, or easier. Once considered the ultimate luxury, media rooms have become more popular and more accessible thanks to advances in technology. “Integrated automation is seeing no signs of slowing down, with all the latest devices supporting Google and/or Alexa,” says electronics expert Adam Vaccaro of Appliances Online. “With one voice command, you can control so many things, including your TV, blinds and lights.” From soundproofing and lighting to speakers and apps, here’s how to create a stylish media room with all the bells and whistles of a movie theatre.
GOOD VIBRATIONS If you’re having a dinner party and the kids are watching a Marvel movie, soundproofing ensures a good time is had by all. “Begin with the basics and choose window coverings with high acoustic insulation, and cover the floor with carpet or rugs,” says marketing communications manager Therese Tarlinton of building products company CSR. A chunky-knit rug, as shown in this Henley Homes-designed room, is an ideal sound buffer. >

SEAMLESS SOUND Gone are the days of the traditional box speakers; the trend now is for concealed, architectural speakers that hide inside the cavity spaces of your walls and ceilings – try the Sonos in-ceiling set.
SOUND
listen up If you are creating a media room from scratch, soundproofing is a great starting point. “Fitting solid core doors and double-glazed windows makes a big difference,” says Therese Tarlinton of CSR. Lining walls with an acoustic plasterboard – such as CSR’s cutting edge Soundchek plasterboard – is an effective solution. “If you can, avoid recessed light fittings and back-to-back power points and light switches,” adds Therese, “as they sabotage sound containment and transfer noise.” Also high on the acoustic agenda is sound quality, which is often overshadowed by screen size. “To recreate an optimal cinema experience, you’ll need at least a 5.1 speaker system – that is, a sixchannel surround sound audio system,” explains Philip Sawyer of Synergy Audio Visual. “For small spaces and tight budgets, great results can be had with two speakers and a sub-woofer.” To take your immersive experience to another level, look at soundbars and complete surround sound sets, some of which have Google Assistant and app capabilities. You’ll find a wide range at Harvey Norman.

A dark space is key to recreating a cinema experience. “The darkness removes distractions and draws your attention to the screen,” says interiors stylist Lauren Keenan. Look out for a blackout blind with minimal light gap, such as Luxaflex’s Duette Architella shades, which have a triple honeycomb construction to help insulate from sound, temperature and outdoor light. Also, in true cinema style, you no longer need to physically raise or lower your blinds – just ask Alexa or Google and they’ll do it for you. Automation technology, such as Luxaflex’s Powerview Motorisation, means new-model blinds are being built with wireless operating systems, letting you control the light with a simple tap of an app, or through a smart home system like Amazon or Google. You can even program your blinds to readjust on their own throughout the day when the light changes.

see the light “Viewing any screen for long periods of time is best done with some indirect ambient lighting,” says architectural lighting designer Clayton Driessen of Beacon Lighting. “This helps to reduce eye strain and provides a level of safety without disturbing the mood of the room.” Choose wall sconces and step lights with dimming control to set the perfect viewing environment. “Wall lights allow you to black out the room and leave a warm glow, creating the perfect ambience,” says director Emma Buchan of EB Interiors, who designed this cosy media room (right). Make your lighting work even harder by replacing standard bulbs with smart bulbs. “When you pair your bulb with a smart home system such as Google Home, you can turn your lights on and off via your smartphone,” says Clayton Driessen. For the ultimate convenience in smaller spaces, look to King Living’s LED ‘Smart’ sofa light, which cleverly connects to compatible sofas through the ‘Smart’ pocket in the arm compartment. >

TECHNOLOGY
picture perfect “PLACE THE MIDDLE OF YOUR TV AT EYE LEVEL”
~
LAUREN KEENEN, INTERIOR STYLIST
Forget resolution, the buzzword to know in TV picture quality is ‘contrast ratio’. “The majority of TVs now have 4K resolution, so the focus is now on the contrast ratio, which shows how well the TV is able to simultaneously display bright white, and inky blacks,” says Adam Vaccaro of Appliances Online. “OLED TVs are able to create perfect black levels down to individual pixel level, which means they have the best contrasts currently available.” Another term to know is HDR (high dynamic range.) “HDR TV shows and movies are increasingly common, so it’s important to ensure your TV performs at its optimal level based on what you’re watching,” says Adam.
smart TV vs projector For a true cinema experience, it is hard to go past a projector set-up. “The sheer size of the screen is tough for a smart TV to beat, but they do need a completely dark room to operate at their best,” says Adam Vaccaro. “They also require more maintenance than a TV and need to be mounted to the ceiling.” Smart TVs, on the other hand, can be used in almost any viewing environment and are easier to install. “It really comes down to the experience you’re trying to create,” says Philip Sawyer of Synergy Audio Visual.

Keep all your streaming services in one place with a streaming device that plugs directly into your TV. “For sheer simplicity, the Google Chromecast is hard to go past,” says Adam Vaccaro. “It supports the major streaming services (Netflix, Stan, YouTube), as well as catch-up services (7Plus, 10Play, 9Now), and also lets you wirelessly cast your phone or laptop to your TV.” Chromecast also enables device control though the Google Home app, allowing you to control certain functions of your TV through voice alone.

LUXE FOR LESS SUMPTUOUS STYLE AND QUALITY MATERIALS IN THE KITCHEN CAN COME AT A PRICE. WE REVEAL THE INDUSTRY SECRETS TO CUTTING COSTS WITHOUT LOSING THE LUXURY Words KAYLA WRATTEN
T
he heart of your home deserves to be treated like royalty – adorned with opulent materials and decked out in the finest finishes (as seen in this GIA Renovations designed glamour). But how do you give your kitchen the grandiose treatment when a tight budget is top of the list? We chat to renovation experts and interior designers to discover their insider secrets to achieving a lavish, yet cost-effective kitchen.
Leftover materials shouldn’t be underestimated to create a luxurious aesthetic. Timber offcuts from flooring or cabinetry make great floating shelves.
THINK THRIFTY A little patience and lots of research goes a long way in finding luxe pieces at half the price. “My advice is to shop around and keep an eye on sales, with a certain style in mind,” suggests interior designer Olivia Cirocco of GIA Renovations. Don’t be afraid to embrace second-hand treasures for a glittering result, either. “You can purchase luxury items such as furniture and lighting second hand from auctions,” she adds. Appliances are big-ticket items that can also be found at discounted prices without forgoing quality, says interior architect Sally Rhys-Jones. “Save on appliances by looking at places like Seconds World, where the side of an oven might have a dint, but you won’t even see it once the oven is in place,” she says.

CHOOSE A POWER PALETTE The perfect colour combination can be the key to nailing a luxurious kitchen, sans costly high-end materials. “Sometimes it’s just about getting the colour palette right,” says interior designer Annie Bowen of Annie Bowen Design. “For example, a beautiful ocean blue offers a sharp contrast to a crisp white benchtop. This strong pop of colour creates a wow-factor without going over the top with money.” (See example, right.) Bringing this look to life could be as simple as a lick of paint on your cabinetry. To design an eye-catching colour scheme, Annie advises placing paint samples “on your floor and table, and if they all look like one story you know you’ve got a good palette.” >

Trend alert: Natural stone benchtops are peaking in popularity as their individual characteristics bring some soul to the heart of the home.
SAVE ON NATURAL STONE “Your choice of stone is a big factor in the cost of your kitchen,” says interior designer Annie Bowen – the colour, size and style of stone will influence the final figure. “There are multiple variations of natural stone,” adds renovation expert and House Rules alumna Carly Schulz, with granite being more affordable than marble, and paler colours often cheaper than darker hues. “If you stick with the cheapest option you can find, you’ve still got a classy stone for your benchtop, you just don’t have the most expensive kind,” she adds. The thickness of your benchtop can also sway the price point, as a thinner edge exudes elegance at a lighter cost.

SPLASH IN SMALL SPACES Your must-have luxury material doesn’t have to blow the budget, as splurging in a smaller zone is a simple way to cut costs. “Don’t use handles on every cabinet as that can get really expensive,” explains interior architect Sally Rhys-Jones. Instead, “use feature handles only on full-length doors and opt for a shadowline on lower cabinets.” While detailed joinery showcases your personality, marble (seen left) is a fast route to opulence. “My best tip for people who want marble is to use it just on the splashback,” says Sally (such as in this kitchen, opposite). “The splashback is always a smaller square metreage than the benchtop and is on the vertical surface, so you actually see it more often. It’s a great place to use a more expensive material.”

5 TIPS FOR DECLUTTERING YOUR PANTRY: SARAH SHANAHAN

Before you even start, have a vision for how you want your pantry to look and feel. If you can visualise it, you are more likely to actually achieve it. Take everything out and edit! Wipe down all surfaces. Check use-by dates and start zoning and storing ‘like with like’ products together, for example, pastas, rices, cans, oils and baking supplies. Invest in good-quality clear, airtight storage containers for dry ingredients. While it may cost a little to start with, it will save you time and money in the long run, as you’ll know exactly what you have and when it’s time to refill. Label! Labelling is the key and the icing on the cake to a well-organised and efficient pantry. Everyone in the house knows what everything is, so no excuses. [See below for HB’s pick of the labellers.] Finally, store the most-used, everyday items at arm’s reach. Keeping them between waist and eye level provides the easiest access.

TERIYAKI STEAK SOBA BOWLS WITH MISO DRESSING Serves 4 600g beef eye fillet (see tip) 185g (2 bundles) soba noodles 2 bunches broccolini, ends trimmed, halved 1½ cups frozen edamame beans, shelled 60g Chinese spinach, also known as amaranth greens (see tip) White sesame seeds and black sesame seeds, toasted (optional) Teriyaki Sauce 2 tbsp honey 1 tbsp brown sugar
PRAWN & FISH DUMPLING LAKSA TERIYAKI STEAK SOBA BOWLS WITH MISO DRESSING
2 tbsp soy sauce or tamari ⅔ cup water 1 tsp grated ginger 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 tsp cornflour 2 tsp lemon juice Miso Sesame Dressing ¼ cup white miso paste ¼ cup lemon juice ⅓ cup water 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp honey 2 tsp grated ginger 3 tsp sesame seeds, toasted
1. To make teriyaki sauce, combine honey, sugar, soy, ½ cup of the water, the ginger and the garlic in a small saucepan. Stir over medium heat until mixture comes to the boil. Simmer for 4 minutes, or until thickened slightly. Combine cornflour with remaining 2 tablespoons water until smooth. Add to pan and simmer for 1-2 minutes, until thickened. Stir in lemon juice. Transfer to a heatproof jug and allow to cool. 2. Once sauce is cool, coat beef in 100ml of marinade. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Reserve remaining sauce for serving. 3. To make miso sesame dressing, place all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. Set aside. 4. Cook soba noodles in a large saucepan of boiling water for about 5 minutes, or until tender. Drain and rinse under cold water. Put in a large bowl. Cook broccolini in a large saucepan of boiling water for 2 minutes, add frozen edamame and cook for a further 1-2 minutes, or until tender. Drain. 5. Heat an oiled chargrill plate over medium-high heat. Cook beef for about 7-8 minutes each side, depending on thickness of fillets, or until medium doneness. Remove and stand for 5 minutes. Heat remaining teriyaki sauce in microwave until hot. 6. Add enough miso sesame dressing to noodles to lightly coat when tossed. Place noodles into bowls. Arrange spinach, broccolini and edamame around the side. Thinly slice beef and arrange on top. Drizzle noodles and vegetables with some of the remaining dressing. Sprinkle with toasted white and black sesame seeds, if desired. Drizzle beef with remaining hot teriyaki sauce and serve.
tips
• We used 2 large tail end pieces of eye fillet. You can use steaks of eye fillet or one large piece. Cooking time will vary. • Chinese spinach or amaranth greens are available from Asian grocery stores. You can use baby spinach leaves as an alternative.
THERE'S A BOWL OF FLAVOUR TO SUIT EVERY OCCASION - FROM WEEKDAY DINNERS TO WEEKEND GATHERINGS
PRAWN & FISH DUMPLING LAKSA Serves 4 600g fresh redfish fillets (see tip) 400g large green prawns, peeled, deveined, chopped 1 tbsp laksa paste, plus ½ cup 2 tsp lemongrass paste 6 kaffir lime leaves, veins removed, very finely chopped 1 tbsp chopped coriander 200g flat rice noodles (see tip) 1L chicken stock 400ml coconut milk 1 tbsp fish sauce 100g fresh shiitake or enoki mushrooms
2 tbsp lime juice 1 bunch baby choy sum, ends trimmed 100g snow peas, trimmed, thinly sliced lengthways 100g bean sprouts 1 long green chilli, thinly sliced 1 cup mixed Vietnamese mint, Thai basil leaves and coriander leaves (see tip) 2 tbsp fried shallots, to sprinkle Lime wedges and chilli paste, to serve (optional)
1. Ask your fishmonger to remove skin and bones from fish fillets. Roughly chop fillets. Put fish, prawns, 1 tbsp laksa paste, lemongrass paste, lime leaves and coriander in a food processor. Season with salt and pepper. Process until finely chopped and slightly pasty. Using wet hands, roll level tablespoons into balls and place on a plate. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, soak noodles in hot water for 20 minutes, or prepare according to packet directions until tender but not too soft. Drain. 3. Place ½ cup of laksa paste, stock, coconut milk and fish sauce in a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Lower dumplings into stock mixture and gently simmer for about 7-9 minutes, or until just cooked through and firm when squeezed with tongs. 4. Thinly slice shiitake mushrooms, add to pot with lime juice and cook for 2 minutes. If using enoki mushrooms, trim ends and add to pot. Cut the bunch of choy sum into halves. Cook in a saucepan of boiling water for 2 minutes, or until tender. Drain. Set aside. 5. Ladle soup and dumplings into bowls. Mound noodles into centre of bowls. Arrange choy sum, snow peas and sprouts on top. Top with chilli, mint, basil and coriander leaves. Sprinkle with shallots. Serve with chilli paste and lime wedges, if desired.
tips
• If desired, you can use any white fish fillet that has not been frozen for this recipe. You will need about 380g-400g of fish once the skin and bones have been removed. • Thai rice noodles or flat rice stick noodles are available from supermarkets and Asian grocery stores. You can use any width. • If you can’t find fresh Vietnamese mint and Thai basil, you can top the bowls with coriander only.

COLOUR, COLOUR, COLOUR “My home is a kaleidoscope: introducing colour is easy and there are so many ways to do it. I think wallpaper is one of the best design tools at our disposal. I would wallpaper the world if I could! I don’t think I’ve ever done a project without it.”
DON’T BE AFRAID OF PATTERN “MOST PEOPLE ARE FRIGHTENED OF PATTERN. I LOVE MIXING PATTERNS, BUT I DO APPRECIATE THAT IT TAKES A PRACTISED EYE, SO I DON’T ALWAYS ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO TRY IT THEMSELVES. MY CLIENTS ON THIS PROJECT HAD FANTASTIC STYLE AND WERE INTO JAPANESE DESIGN. WHILE THIS WAS A HUGE LEAP OF FAITH FOR THEM, IT INJECTED GREAT PERSONALITY INTO A STREAMLINED SPACE.”
3
BUY WELL, BUY ONCE “I absolutely love furniture that is gorgeous to look at and serves a purpose. That’s why I think sideboards are really coming back. The Zuster range is lovely – heirloom pieces even. Expect to buy the piece and then hand it down to your children.”
4
CONNECT WITH THE OUTDOORS
LOOK TO MID-CENTURY PIECES “You can never go wrong with mid-century modern pieces as they work with almost anything. There is just something that’s so elegant about that era of design. If I’m working on a new house, I try and find some vintage furniture. Its elegance and proportions are timeless.”
6
“CONSIDER THE SIGHTLINES FROM ROOM-TO-ROOM AND HAVE THEM CONNECT WITH THE OUTDOORS WHEREVER POSSIBLE. IT’S ONE OF THOSE DELIGHTFUL SURPRISES THAT GIVE A HOME ITS SOUL AND ITS CHARACTER.”
5 USE THE FIFTH WALL “SOME PEOPLE FORGET THE CEILING, BUT I LOVE COLOUR AND WALLPAPER ON CEILINGS. DARK HUES WORK ON THERE TOO, SO DON’T BE AFRAID OF THEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHT. COLOURED CEILINGS ARE GOING TO BE BIG.”

PLAN YOUR SPACE “I’d always ask a professional to do your spatial planning. You might think that a new kitchen will change your life, but it’s counterproductive if it’s actually where the living room should be. I would rather spend less on finishes and invest more in the design and layout of the space.”

MODERN GLAMOUR TRADIE COUPLE KAYNE AND AIMEE’S OUTER-MELBOURNE PROPERTY IS REBORN AS A SLEEK, SUSTAINABLE HOME, COURTESY OF THE HOUSE RULES TEAMS Story LYNNE TESTONI Photography ANNA ROBINSON
estled in a bush block on the outskirts of Melbourne, plumbers Kayne and Aimee’s ranch was ripe for reimagining. And the House Rules teams went all in to create a light-filled, modern eco-ranch by embracing texture, timber and upcycling. The competing teams developed a cohesive scheme featuring a soft, subtle palette and lots of earthy tones. One feature that proved particularly striking – and polarising – was the freestanding stone fireplace separating the living and dining spaces. Judge Saul Myers said it clearly divided the zones while still keeping some elements of an open-plan design, not to mention warming up the chilly Victorian winters. Fellow judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen applauded the use of recycled materials, adding more credibility to the idea of sustainability than just using timber-look furniture and accessories.

OVERSIZED LUXURY Judge Kyly Clarke loved the Early Settler ‘Slouch’ sofa Perth couple Tanya and Dave chose for the living area (below & opposite). “Adding a big comfy lounge with oversized cushions was a great choice,” she explains. “Sometimes you feel like you’re taking a risk when you choose a large piece because you don’t know if it’s going to be intrusive. But this wasn’t. They also made it feel cosy and warm by bringing texture into the space.” Kyly says the two ‘Panton’ leather and oak armchairs in Vintage Saddle from Schots Home Emporium added an upscale, yet relaxed retro vibe. “It just brought the living room up a notch,” she says. >

CUSTOM STYLE The petite kitchen (left) uses custom cabinetry made by Mr Cabinets, with Polytec’s Natural Oak Ravine timber veneer adding a textured and soft-to-touch profile. The gentle timber tones contrast with Crisp White to create a contemporary combination, with Merchants & Traders ‘Fleet’ drawer pulls from The Society Inc providing a unique edge.
ZONED SPACES The dining area (below), designed by contestants Rhi and Kimmy, was a big hit with all of the judges. Saul commended the way they sectioned off the dining space in the open-plan living area, using a repurposed timber framework above the table to create an eating zone, while Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen said he felt the twins were brave with scale. “They made the table actually ‘almost’ too large and created an extraordinary sort of gate-like structure, which they hung from the ceiling,” he says. “They proved themselves to get under the skin of how a space would be used.”
SMART STONE A large and durable kitchen island (opposite) designed by Lenore and Bradley and made from Smartstone’s Pelle Grigio allows for extra preparation space without closing off the cooking zone from the dining area.

DARK AND HANDSOME A MOODY NEW YORK GENTLEMEN’S CLUB VIBE WAS CHANNELLED WHEN THE HOUSE RULES TEAMS TACKLED THE NSW HOME OF LAITH AND GEORGE Story LYNNE TESTONI Photography SUE STUBBS
reating a masculine space that didn’t just end up being a stereotype was the challenge that faced the House Rules teams in renovating Laith and George’s NSW home. Right from the start, best friends George and Laith captured viewers’ hearts and funny bones with their larrikin ways and sense of style, with judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen describing the pair as “urban, funky, aspiring James Bondlike figures”. And the renovated property that they returned to was all sophisticated cool. Working within the rules – including ones requesting heritage colours and craftsmanship – the teams showcased a rich collection of dark timbers and luxurious surfaces and finishes, and opened up the home for large family gatherings.
C
GENTLEMEN'S CLUB With a House Rule that included “Give us a VIP lounge fit for distinguished gentlemen… like us”, Tasmanian twins Kimmy and Rhi created a snug, yet sophisticated, space for Laith and George (opposite). “This VIP lounge was outstanding,” says judge Kyly Clarke. “They know how to work with texture and play with colour and contrast.” The cabinetry lights enhanced the mood and Wynstan Veri Shades provided a clean backdrop, while custom-made cabinetry by Silva Wardrobe Co using Polytec Char Oak board with a Smartstone benchtop echoed a New York vibe. The ‘Elite’ rug in Black from Deco Rugs adds the finishing touch to this look.
PLUSH MATERIALS With a leather banquette opposite the rich velvet ‘Grenache’ dining chairs from Koala Living, this space, designed by contestants Kayne and Aimee, takes family mealtimes to a whole new level. “This dining room is almost a restaurant,” says Laurence. “It’s so crazy, and suits these guys with their enormous extended families.” The ‘Portofino’ table from Koala Living gives gravitas, while the ‘Sunset Hilltops’ art from Art Lovers Australia gives a colour connection. >

~ KYLY CLARKE, JUDGE
DOUBLE-DUTY WALLS The guest bedroom (left), renovated by Kayne and Aimee, includes a custom-made feature wall that doubles up as a bedhead. Painted in a rich dark green, it was balanced by the softer shade of Taubmans Mistral Breeze for the other walls. Bedlinen by Canningvale in beautiful terracotta shades adds a real sense of luxury.
LUXE AND LAYERED The renovation of the main bedroom (opposite) by Tanya and Dave led to one of the most fabulous moments in House Rules history, according to judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen: “Laith said the worst thing anyone could ever do was paint his bedroom black. And what did he do when he walked into his black bedroom? Totally fell in love with it.” Aksel brass pendant lights from Beacon Lighting provide task lighting over the custom-made bedside niches (below), which were also lit with subtle LED strip lighting for ambiance. ‘Dappled Leaf’ wallpaper on the ceiling from Annandale Wallpapers added a sophisticated new dimension to the room. >

DRAMATIC EFFECT Plumbers Kayne and Aimee were playing to their strengths in designing the main bathroom in the NSW home (left) and it won accolades from all the judges. HB renovation expert and judge Saul Myers explains the dark textured tile was a real winner for the pair. Judge Kyly Clarke says she expects a lot from the plumbers, and feels they always have delivered. “I think the texture of the black geometric feature wall tile (the ‘Malmo’ hexagon tile in Black Satin from Beaumont Tiles) was really cool and the shape of the basins set the tone for the look of the bathroom.”
A CLASSIC TAKE In contrast to the rest of the home, the muted classical, and almost cloud-like, shades of the ensuite bathroom created by Lenore and Bradley impressed Kyly (below). “This house had lots of deep tones to make it feel like a sophisticated gentleman’s club, however, I think we needed some white space and I really liked finding it here,” she says. “It was a tranquil space; and a space where you could go and feel a little more relaxed.”

THE HIGH POINT FOR THEIR FIRST MAJOR RENOVATION, TEAMS WERE TASKED WITH CREATING A MODERN, COLOUR-FILLED CELEBRATION OF MIAMI BEACH STYLE ON QUEENSLAND’S GOLD COAST Story LYNNE TESTONI Photography JOHN DOWNS
WALLPAPER: ‘Jungle Jive’ wallpaper in Gold Palms, Affordable Decorators.
n their renovating debut, the latest line-up of dynamite duos were given a tall order: to tackle the faded beauty of a Gold Coast penthouse apartment and create fresh spaces that evoked a sense of luxury and glamour. With House Rules to follow that encompassed a Miami Beach vibe, sexy curves and gelato hues, the end results produced some serious wow-factor – especially in the bathrooms. Seasoned House Rules judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, and newcomers Kyly Clarke and Saul Myers, were impressed by the ingenuity and style put forward by the newbie renovators. “The rooms are bigger, the challenges are far, far greater,” says Laurence. “This is absolute, six-star, high-ticket, penthouse decorating.”

GLAM POWER Tasmania’s Kimmy and Rhi brought a midcentury vibe and a touch of bling to the living room (top right), courtesy of the gold palm wallpaper. “Metallics or reflective paper capture light and bounce it back into the room,” explains Laurence. WINNING COLOURS The study nook created by Kayne and Aimee (opposite) won praise from the judges for its subtle blend of colour – the ‘Tess’ office chair in Mint from Freedom fits within the ‘gelato’ rules and complements the ocean view, while the ‘Monroe’ stool in Blush from Rice Furniture adds in some luxe appeal . “This is the colour palette that I was looking for,” says judge Kyly. PASTEL POWER While the layout and low vanity height in this bathroom (right & below) came under fire, an innovative use of tiles was a hit with the judging panel. Soft pastel shades were laid in a herringbone pattern to form a feature wall. “It was a very simple solution just using tiling and a wonderful, fashionable European colour palette of pinks, greens and greys in a zigzag,” explains judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. “It was almost Missoni-eque, which I think was inspirational. It showed that tiling doesn’t need to be dull.”
PAIRED BACK Best friends Laith and George tackled the ensuite (opposite), surprising judges with their shrewd creation of a feminine boudoir. “They knew how to accent a dusty pink tile and then paired it with a green wallpaper,” says judge Kyly Clarke. “The success of the design lies in the fact the green wasn’t saturated – it was green leaves. And then they complemented that dusty pink with a darker pink flamingo on the wallpaper.” Shop the ‘Tropic Like Its Hot’ Wallpaper at Affordable Decorators.

MARBLE MAGIC Nothing whispers opulence more than swathes of marble – and the soft grey tones of the floor-to-ceiling feature wall do all the talking in this sophisticated bathroom, even if the ‘marble’ is not the real deal. “The marble-look feature wall was included to add interest and depth to a space that could have otherwise felt too light and bare,” says interior designer Chantal Philippe from Myers + Philippe Design, who created this luxe look. “Too much marble can overpower a space or make it feel traditional, so be mindful of the selection and its location.” {STYLE TO STEAL}

TURKISH DELIGHT It’s hard not to be transported to an exotic Turkish bathhouse when stepping into this serene space. HEAVENLY HUES There is something of the divine about this special space (right). Reminiscent of the soft, reflective hues of the stained-glass windows in an old European chapel, the stunning mosaic tile feature wall evokes a sense of retreat. “The tiles make the bathroom sing,” says MThome’s Dani Katz, the interior designer behind this stylish space. “They work not only because of its beauty, but because of its shape. It enhances the architectural elements of the shower as it follows the angles of the ceiling.” {STYLE TO STEAL}
Shop this look with the Mek mosaic tile range from Tile Republic, teamed with a silver tripod-style side table from Living Styles.
ROOM FOR TWO Touches of gleaming gold tapware, a luxe marble feature wall that flows seamlessly onto the floor and a spacious, family-friendly floor plan – this stunning suite (below) is what bathroom dreams are made of. “This is a space made for the morning rush hour, albeit a very five-star one,” says HB acting editor Katrina O’Brien. “It’s such an elegant statement and, when combined with the peachy pink walls and golden tapware, it’s pure luxury.” {STYLE TO STEAL} For gold tapware such as this, look to the Scala
range from Sussex, and pair it with ‘Antique Gold Calacatta’ tiles from Beaumont Tiles (just don’t forget to lay them in a herringbone pattern). >

TOUGH LUXE Marble meets concrete in this skyscraping New York ensuite (above). “I just love the detail and thought behind this space,” says HB editor Katrina O’Brien. “The inset design elevates the vanity area to star attraction and makes it the perfect make-up spot.” A cohesive and calming palette allows for a harmonious mix of materials, while geometric patterned tiles add visual interest underfoot. {STYLE TO STEAL}
Pair the ‘Beaches’ trough by Slab Shapers with ‘Travessa’ ceramic tiles from Tile Wizards, against a backdrop of marble tiles (try Marble & Ceramic Corp) to create pure luxury.
MODERN MONOCHROME Think outside the box when playing with a black and white palette. This statement marble floor (left) is a lesson in elegant restraint. “It works because it’s the focal point,” says homeowner Nicole. “Everything else is neutral, calming and soft, so nothing competes. We wanted the master to have a punch, but feel serene and calming as well.” {STYLE TO STEAL}
Shop the look with ‘Alabaster LMB’ concrete tiles from Covet, a black-framed mirror from Zanui and custom cabinetry in Taubman’s neutral Movie Star hue.

Is there any better way to unwind than a soothing soak in a gorgeous (and generously sized) freestanding tub? In this modern, glamorous bathroom (top left), simple charcoal floor tiles are a grounding foundation to the sumptuous bath zone. “A floor-to-ceiling marble slab brings instant luxe-factor and makes this elegant freestanding bath even more of a focal point,” says HB style editor Fiona Gould.
TRANSCENDING TIME A dash of modernity in the shape of steel-framed shower doors fast-tracks the main bathroom of this historic Georgian townhouse straight into the 21st century. The unexpected meeting of eras crafted by London-based interior designer Emilie Fournet creates a clever contrast that’s timeless in style, and so carefully executed that the opulent freestanding bath is still the main attraction. {STYLE TO STEAL}
Look to Victoria and Albert’s ‘Elwick’ bath, ‘Camp Cove Beach’ encaustic-look tiles from Tile Cloud and double fixed shower doors from Steel Shower Screens to make this look your own. >
“MARBLE, WOOD AND GLASS HELP TO EMPHASISE THE COLOURS AND TEXTURES OF THE GARDEN” ~ RON RADZINER, DESIGN PARTNER OF MARMOL RADZINER
MATERIAL WORLD Glamour and the great outdoors are a perfect – albeit unexpected – pairing in this Palm Springs oasis. Calacatta Manhattan marble lines the shower wall, while an unexpected use of timber decking adds warmth and texture below. “This bathroom brings together light-coloured terrazzo flooring and timber ceilings from the rest of the house, with an understated mix of material,” says Ron Radziner, design partner of Marmol Radziner, who took on this project. A floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door provides a seamless connection to a private outdoor courtyard. Just dreamy. { S T Y L E T O S T E A L } You can find Calacatta Manhattan at Euro Marble and an equally luxe polished chrome shower control at Renovator Store. It’s best to speak to your builder for advice on integrating timber decking inside, but Bunnings has you covered with supplies.

RAW TALENT There is so much to love in this lush ensuite (right) – from the richness of the warm, natural materials to the smooth lines that frame the space. “We wanted to create a soft, calm space with clean lines that offered a sense of sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the everyday,” says Lauren Martin from Melbourne’s Studio Martin, who designed this space alongside sister and business partner, Amanda. {STYLE TO STEAL}
A custom vanity was formed entirely of Carrara marble from Signorino – a sensational example of simplicity – and the elegant, round ‘140 Hawai’ bath is from Prodigg.
CENTRE STAGE ‘Location is everything’ applies as much to bathroom design as it does to real estate, especially when you’re looking to create a statement. “This space (bottom right) literally puts the bath front and centre, making it the standout feature,” says HB’s Katrina O’Brien. “Its fluid shape adds to the elegance, while the floaty drapes create a true sense of sanctuary.” { S T Y L E T O S T E A L } You’ll find a match in Victoria and Albert’s
‘Toulouse’ freestanding tub at Harvey Norman, and a similar multi-tiered chandelier at Litfad for an added touch of glamour. Underfoot, try the encaustic range at National Tiles.
TREASURE CHEST The sweet pastel colour palette of this custom vanity (below) is quite the treat in this beautiful bathroom. “I wanted to create a feature that had ‘wow’ factor,” says Alan Nasrallah, interior designer at GIA Renovations, who was enlisted to bring this space to life. “It was quite a large vanity, so by selecting a pastel colour, adding timber and a light-coloured stone top, it created a more subtle feature.” {STYLE TO STEAL}

“BRING A NEUTRAL PALETTE TO LIFE WITH LAYERS OF UNEXPECTED TEXTURES” ~ KATRINA O’BRIEN, HB ACTING EDITOR
SHEER BEAUTY A black-framed arch window is the feature that makes our collective hearts sing here, perfectly framing a flood of natural light. Simple but tactile finishes and a pared-back palette allow the statement maker to shine a little more brightly, while linen sheers diffuse the light and soften the space some more. “As a decorative flourish to ensuites and powder rooms, a rug in gentle textures and soothing tones also helps transform a home into a real sanctuary,” says Jodie Fried, co-founder of Armadillo and Co. {STYLE TO STEAL}
Simple is beautiful, so opt for the Gareth Ashton Lucia floor mounted bath mixer with hand shower from Cass Brothers and try Apaiser for a freestanding tub as generous in size as this one. Textiles matter, too. Here, the ‘Savannah’ rug in Dust from Armadillo and Co is a perfect match, and for airy linen sheers, try I Love Linen.

STONE COLD STUNNER “Mixed textures, imperfect shapes and an earthy colour palette contrasted against crisp white is what makes this room so inviting, says HB style editor Fiona Gould of this natural beauty. Raw slabs of local stone have been used to create the basin and bath step and, when teamed with pebble stone flooring, help to evoke an immersed-in-nature sensation. {STYLE TO STEAL}
Build this bathroom from the ground up with the Decor8 Tiles Marble Pebble Earth Mix Mosaic Tile from Bunnings and look to Stone and Rock for a similar bathroom basin. Pair these with fish scale tiles from Tile Cloud and a shower from Brooklyn Copper Co. >
SMALL WONDER Even the most modest of spaces can make a huge statement, just as this chic bathroom nook (left) does. “We wanted the space to feel refined and glamorous,” says Charlie Hale, interior designer at Sydney’s Alexandra Kidd Design, who was behind this design. “We kept the vanity open, to maximise the feeling of space.” {STYLE TO STEAL}
Get creative with mirrors and light fixtures. This striking ‘Balloon’ wall light from Lucretia and a vintage mirror from Becker Minty make a big impact in a small space.
TIMELESS TRIBECA This stunning bathroom (bottom left) is the ultimate retreat from city life. A soft marble palette opens up the space, creating a bright, light-filled ambience, while the contrast of the dark wood cabinetry balances out the room from over-saturation. “It blends both modern and traditional styles and works well to create something interesting,” says operations manager Kristen Rigau from New York’s Chango & Co, the architecture and interior design studio behind this look. {STYLE TO STEAL} Add a touch of grandeur with ‘Pebble 1’ wall light in Antique Brass from Beacon Lighting and the ‘Industrica’ basin set from Candana in Brushed Brass.
COOL AND CALM Inspired by the colour palette of the Australian landscape, interior designer Katherine Wallis wanted to create a relaxing escape for her busy clients (below). “I chose to reflect the colours and textures of nature – the blue, green and grey hues,” she says of the stunning retreat. Curved lines from the carefully chosen mirrors, basin and bathtub introduce an inviting softness. {STYLE TO STEAL}

MODERN TROPICS Lacking a leafy green outlook to enjoy from the bath? A punchy palm feature wallpaper can do just the trick. “This bold leafy wallpaper really adds life to this space and provides a tropical nod, and the modern print complements the clean-lined bath and accessories,” says HB style editor Fiona Gould. A gunmetal bath filler and stylish grey toned flooring keeps things cool. { S T Y L E T O S T E A L } Cole and Son’s ‘Deco Palm’ wallpaper will take you to the tropics

BLISS SIMPLICITY Celebrate – don’t compete – is the top takeaway from this breathtaking bathroom. “Let nature be the artwork of the room by keeping the rest of the space very simple,” says HB’s Fiona Gould. A whitewashed colour palette, straight lines and windows as large as the walls makes this oceanic outlook masterpiece perfect. { S T Y L E T O S T E A L } Use James Hardie’s Axon cladding to create subtle detail on the ceiling and pick up a ‘Koo’ bamboo bathmat from Spotlight to incorporate that touch of texture. Bathroom Warehouse’s freestanding bath mixer in Brushed Bronze will complete this look.
MIRROR MIRROR Make a statement in a small space by playing with tone and texture. The striking gold detailing in this glam bathroom vanity (above) is a prime example. “We wanted to add some sophistication and glamour,” says the interior designer responsible, Charlie Hale from Alexandra Kidd Design. “Gold hardware complements the neutral colour palette and textures, and bounces the light.” {STYLE TO STEAL}
Pair the ‘Vivienne’ brushed brass mirror from James Said with this light from Home Design for an elegant touch.

SPA CENTRAL A light, bright and calming bathroom was the brief for Sydney interior designer Lisa Santamaria, who designed this serene space (top right). “I wanted to create something classically beautiful,” she says. With natural lighting streaming in from a skylight above, hints of sage from the marble splashback, and simple fresh whites with notes of soft greys, it’s mission accomplished. {STYLE TO STEAL}
Marble subway tiles in Ming Green from Teranova Tiles Willoughby add a dash of colour, while ‘Calgary’ Verde Green thassos marble mosaics – also sourced from Teranova Tiles – make the hero feature.
STYLE INFUSION Balancing luxe appeal with a laidback coastal feel, this bathroom (right) is the perfect lesson in adding intrigue without overwhelming. The key? Subtle texture. “The pinstripe profile on the drawer front adds such a beautiful layer of subtle texture to the room,” says the room’s interior designer, Catherine Heraghty from The Stables. { S T Y L E T O S T E A L } Add a touch of the tropics to your home with gorgeous scallop tiles from Tile Bazaar, paired with a chic and simple sink from Caroma. >

LIGHT THE WAY Natural light is a powerful player in all aspects of interior design, but it might be most appreciated in the bathroom. In this ultra simple – and equally cool – bathroom (left), a skylight above the bath is the unseen hero, letting in a flood of sunshine. Large-format grey tiles on the floor and walls are perfect for a streamlined design. {STYLE TO STEAL}
A long hot soak is made irresistible by this Apaiser ‘Haven’ freestanding oval bath with a ‘Pinch’ floor-mounted spout, both found at Rogerseller. A pop of graphic pattern in the form of towels by Ninnho adds a little excitement.
SLEEK AND SIMPLE Little details make a big difference in this stylish Sydney ensuite (bottom left). A cleverly positioned divider wall separates a covetable double shower, while also acting as the vanity, and marble mosaic tiling adds texture to the space without overpowering the overall design. “Using a round mirror brings a subtle softness to the room,” explains Fiona Gould, HB style editor. {STYLE TO STEAL}
Striking black tapware and accessories, together with the warm timber detailing of the Ikea ‘Stockholm’ round mirror, make this space a standout.
SENSE OF ZEN “When designing bathrooms, I strive to create a look that is simplistic, minimalistic and timeless,” says interior designer Jane Howell from Howell Interiors, who designed this oasis of calm (below). A motorised sliding window connects this serene splash zone with the neighbouring Japanese garden – and a pared-back palette with simple finishes wouldn’t dare compete for your attention. {STYLE TO STEAL}

“THE MARBLE-LOOK PORCELAIN SHEET IS A TIMELESS ADDITION TO THE BATHROOM DESIGN” ~ OLIVIA CIROCCO, GIA RENOVATIONS
GRAND DESIGNS It’s the sense of grandeur in this sun-soaked bathroom that instantly takes your breath away. Retaining the unique Edwardian features of the heritage-listed home, this captivating space is a perfect example of how to update and preserve your home’s existing bones. “The layering of materials on the walls – the terrazzo floor tiles coming up the wall to create a border around the room to meet the porcelain sheet and the mosaic tiles – adds a grand feel to the space,” says interior designer Olivia Cirocco from GIA Renovations, who devised the design. {STYLE TO STEAL}
Recreate this look of unexpected simplicity with ‘Calacutta Oro’ porcelain sheets from Quantam Quartz. Add a chic ottoman such as this one from Adairs, teamed with ‘Scala’ tapware in Matt Gold from Sussex, and elegance abounds.

UNSUNG ICONS:
THE UNPLAYED PIANO COMEDIAN DAVID SMIEDT TAKES AN IRREVERENT, BUT APPRECIATIVE, LOOK AT THE CLASSIC THINGS THAT DEFINE YOU-BEAUT AUSSIE LIFE Illustration MATT COSGROVE
O
f all the objects that we keep in our homes, none thrum with quite the potential of musical instruments. The sinuous lines of a guitar, for example, not only make music, they also look beautiful. Pop a guitar up on a stand and it functions as an erstwhile corner sculpture that suggests a certain homeowner might be way more bohemian or talented than he or she actually is. Yet for all of the mid-life-crisis chic on offer through a collection of six-strings – “bought it at the five and dime, played it ’till my fingers bled, guess what season and year it was” – nothing was ever quite as elegant, respectable and stolid as having a piano. These came in a variety of forms. If you were one of those folks who was well enough off to use the word “our” preceding “beach” or “jetty”, had staff who “felt like part of the family”, the choice was a baby grand finished in a black so shiny it verged on the opalescent. With the top hinged open, it sat somewhere between an open-jawed anime monster and Viennese opera house by way of Hans Wegner. Even the accompanying stool was cushioned in a plush jewel-toned velvet and bore the faint imprint of bored bottoms belonging to owners who had to play interminable scales when what they really wanted to be doing instead was playing interminable Scalextrics. Long before we received our shots of self-esteem via someone we could barely tolerate at school – and have rarely seen since – complimenting our breakfast on Insta, pianos were heavy-hitting status symbols. Their mere presence spoke of refinement, high culture and elegant Mozart-laced evenings where robber barons and their painted wives retired to the library for cigars, port and discussions about “the Palestine problem”. Or at least the upmarket Australian version. So valued were these instruments they virtually required their own staff. Twice a year, a piano tuner would come in to perform his perfectly pitched necromancy and, if you were especially lucky/cursed, there would arrive on your doorstep weekly a worldweary emigre teacher who’d wallow in a funk of passive aggression only broken by outbursts of “I said ‘fortissimo’.” Like we said, though, the domestic baby grand was a rare beast in suburban Australia. If there was a piano that most of us grew up with,

it was the upright variety – a compact set-up of 88 keys in a timber housing that could be easily accommodated under the stairs of the myriad terrace houses that dotted our suburbs. If the baby grands were the Bentleys of the piano world, then the uprights were the Toyota Camrys: tough, boxy and requiring little maintenance to do the job for which they were created. They were also far more democratic in that it didn’t feel the least bit disrespectful banging out the odd festive ‘Chopsticks’ or whatever few notes had lodged in your head during those long afternoons of instructive tedium where your parents reminded you that they “paid good money for these lessons and you were bloody well going to practise.” Many a piano was purchased with evenings of Von Trapp-style family singalongs in mind. And for a few, these might actually have even eventuated. For the majority, however, two things accumulated: dust and a growing stack of sheet music lying concealed within the stool’s flip-topped recess. This functioned as a repository of a family’s musical pretensions and aspirations, their enthusiasms and follies.
“IF THE BABY GRANDS WERE THE BENTLEYS OF THE WORLD, THEN THE UPRIGHTS WERE THE TOYOTA CAMRYS”
piano
Most of the time, however, the family piano simply stood silent, occupying valuable floor space in a still remonstration that it alone would never be able to supply either talent or dedication. And yet, these items over the mute years acquired a sentimental weight that was easily on a par with their physical one. They became keepsakes, intrinsically tied to the memory of those who purchased or actually played them, which meant that heaven forbid you even suggested getting rid of it when you moved. Pianos, unplayed and unloved, therefore accompanied Aussies from home to home, as we downsized, upgraded, sea changed and tree changed. Because someday, someone might flip it open and finally, all the money and the schlepping would have been worth it.
