Ingredients:

¾ cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
¼ cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp ginger powder
½ tsp salt
Additional granulated sugar on a small plate for coating
Steps:
1. Melt shortening in a large saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and pour into a medium bowl to cool.
2. Add sugar, molasses, and egg to the bowl. Beat well.
3. Sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ground cloves, ginger powder and salt in a separate medium bowl. Gradually add this dry mixture to your wet mixture, beating until no lumps (dough will remain shaggy).
4. Cover the bowl and chill as you preheat your oven to 375° F. Grease two cookie sheets with additional shortening and prepare a small plate with sugar for coating.
5. Form one-inch balls with your dough, roll them in sugar, and then place them two inches apart on your cookie sheets. Bake for 8-10 minutes. (Cookies will have a cracked appearance.)
