Philip Heylen joins Elia Board as Publi-T representative Elia's Board of Directors welcomes Philip Heylen, Antwerp's alderman for culture and tourism, as a representative of Publi-T. He replaces Johan De Roo, who is resigning his directorship. Following the resignation of Johan De Roo (62), Publi-T's representative on the Elia Board since 2001, the Board approved the appointment of Philip Heylen upon a proposal by the core shareholder. Philip Heylen (born 1968) studied law. He began his career as an adviser for various organisations, but soon turned his hand to politics. He has served on the Antwerp municipal council since 2001, and has been the alderman for culture, tourism, libraries, heritage and worship since 2004. With his legal training, aesthetic bent and social commitment, he combines active involvement in numerous organisations and cultural initiatives with economic and financial duties. He holds directorships in Holding Communal, Antwerpse Havenbedrijf and Publigas. Elia's Board of Directors has 14 members. Half are independent and the other half represent the shareholder (Publi-T and Groupe Arco operating jointly). About Elia: Elia is the Belgian transmission system operator, transmitting electricity from producers to distribution system operators and major industrial users. Elia is responsible for importing and exporting electricity from and to neighbouring countries. Elia owns the entire Belgian very high voltage grid (150 to 380 kV) and some 94% (ownership and user rights) of the Belgian highvoltage grid (30 to 70 kV). The Elia grid comprises 5,608 km of overhead lines and 2,775 km of underground connections and is a key link between electricity markets in northern and southern Europe. Belgium's recent investment in interconnection capacity with its neighbours makes it one of the most open and interconnected grids in Europe. Elia has expanded its activities on a broader European level and, following its acquisition of German TSO 50Hertz in cooperation with Industry Funds Management (IFM) in May 2010, is now one of the top five transmission system operators in Europe.
