Lexington Chamber Chorale Gary L. Anderson, Conducting Anders Åstrand, mallet artist Even When He is Silent (2011) Kim André Arnesen Norway, sung in English I believe in the sun even when it’s not shining. I believe in love even when I feel it not. I believe in God even when He is silent Muusika (2003) Pärt Uusberg; words by Juhan Liiv Estonia, sung in Estonian Somewhere the original harmony must exist, hidden somewhere in the vast wilds. In earth’s mighty firmament, in the far reaches of swirling galaxies, in sunshine, in a flower, in the song of a forest, in the music of a mother’s voice, or in teardrops— somewhere, immortality endures, and the original harmony will be found. How else could it have been formed in human hearts—music? Salmo (1993) Ernani Aguiar Brazil, sung in Latin Praise the Lord in his sacred places, praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts, praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him for the sound of the trumpet, praise him with the psaltery and the harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance, praise him with strings and pipes. Praise him with high-sounding cymbals, praise him with cymbals of joy. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! —Psalm 150

Calm (2022) Improvisation by Mr. Åstrand
Anders Åstrand
To the Mothers in Brazil: Salve Regina (1995) Lars Jansson, Sweden, sung in Latin arr. Gunnar Eriksson Hail holy Queen, Mother of mercy. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, and Jesus the blessed fruit of thy womb. Put Vējini (2000) Latvian seafarer’s song, arr. Imant Raminish Latvia, sung in Latvian Blow winds, blow my small boat, blow me back to Kurzeme. There a mother promised to me her fair daughter, the miller maid. But the mother broke her promise, called me a wastrel. Where’s the horse that I’ve run ragged, where’s the tavern I’ve drunk dry? But, if I did, ’twas my own horse, my own money drank it dry. I took my love far from home, father, mother, left behind. Blow winds, blow my small boat, blow me back to Kurzeme. Vichten (1990) Angèle Arsenalt, Words by Arthur Arsenault Canada This is a newly-composed folk song from the Acadian French culture in Nova Scotia. The words are made of nonsense syllables. Sung by the Women of the Chorale Earth Teach Me Quiet (2013) Ēriks Ešenvalds Latvia, sung in English Earth teach me quiet as the grasses are still with light. Earth teach me suffering as old stones suffer with memory. Teach me humility as blossoms are humble with beginning. Teach me caring as mothers nurture their young. Teach me courage as the tree alone. Earth teach me imitation as the ant that crawls on the ground. Earth teach me freedom as the eagle that soars in the sky. Earth teach me acceptance as the leaves that die each fall. Teach me renewal as the seed that rises in the spring. Teach me to forget myself. Earth, oh teach me to remember kindness as dry fields weep with rain. —Prayer of the Ute of North America

Tambur (1981) Old Hungarian dancing song, arr. Lajos Bárdos Tambur, andandori tam. Sweetheart, come along with me to the music so entrancing. Gay and lively melodies, they will set your feet a-dancing. Come, oh come to the dance, fair maiden, gleeful singing which will gladden our hearts; joy is ours my darling. Boom! The bass is booming, dzum boom. Strike the cimbalom so merry and set the bass to booming. Hear the piper pipe his gay ditty to the merry drumming. Dance and turn to the music lively, step and toss to the measure sprightly, more and more never ending. Bending, bowing gracefully like a gently swaying flower, heaven sent you to be mine, there was ne’er so prized a dower. Your sweet face does my heart beguile, you are more fair when you, blushing, smile than roses fresh in a garden. Heed my sighs and clasp my hand, I am ever for you yearning. Love for you consumes with so great a flame my poor soul sighing. Other swains come to court and woo you, be mine only, my one love true, and joy will be ours forever. Song of Peace (1899) Jean Sibelius, arr. Gary Fry Finland, sung in English, From the symphonic poem Finlandia This is my song, O God of all the nations, a song of peace for lands afar and mine; this is my home, the country where my heart is, here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine. But other hearts in other lands are beating with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine. O, hear my song, O God of all the nations, a song of peace for their land and for mine. Sung by the Men of the Chorale Molytva za Ukrayinu (1885) Mykola Lysenko, arr. O. Koshyts Ukraine, sung in Ukranian Lord, O the Great and Almighty, protect our beloved Ukraine. Bless her with freedom and with light of your holy rays. With learning and knowledge enlighten us, your children small, in love pure and everlasting let us, O Lord, grow. We pray, O Lord Almighty, protect our beloved Ukraine, grant our people and country all your kindness and grace. Bless us with freedom, bless us with wisdom, guide into a kind world. Bless us, O Lord with good fortune forever and ever more.

Sommarpsalm (1934) Waldemar Åhlén, ed. Kenneth Jennings Sweden, vs. 1 in Swedish, other verses in English vs. 1. The earth adorned in verdant robe sends praises upward surging, while soft winds breathe on fragrant flowers from winter now emerging. The sunshine bright gives warmth and light to budding blossoms tender, proclaiming summer splendor. vs. 1 sung in Swedish by Ms. Bowles, then in English by the Chorale vs. 3. O God, amid these joys of life, creation’s glory beaming, grant us the grace to keep your word and live in love redeeming. All flesh is grass, the flowers fade, and time is fleeting ever; God’s word remains forever. I Have Had Singing (2003) Ron Jeffers United States, sung in English Singing, singing, oh the singing! There was so much singing then. We all sang, and this is my pleasure, too. The boys in the field, the chapels were full of singing, always full of singing. Here I lie; I have had pleasure enough, I have had singing! Announcing Our 2022–2023 Season!
