Noel! Christmas Concert 2021 WELCOME TO THE GREAT HALL Cornish Wassail Traditional English Carol Now Christmas is comen and New year begin, pray open your door and let us come in. With our wassail, wassail, and joy come to our jolly wassail. Sussex Carol Traditional English Carol Sing Noel, sing Noel. On Christmas night all Christians sing to hear the news the angels bring. O, news of great joy, news of great mirth, news of our great merciful King’s birth. Then why should men on earth be so sad, since our Redeemer hath made us glad? Oh, when from our sin he set us free, all for us, our liberty. All out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night, they sing: O, glory to God and peace on earth. In excelsis Deo. A Medieval Carol Charles Callahan Sung by the Women of the Chorale O my dear heart, young Jesu sweet, prepare thy cradle in my spreit, and I sall rock thee in my heart, and never mair from thee depart. But I sall praise thee evermore, with sangis sweet unto thy gloire; the knees of my heart sall I bow and sing that rich Balulalow.

Noel! Christmas Concert 2021 Of the Father’s Love Begotten

13th-century Plainsong, arr. Edwin T. Childs Sung by the Men of the Chorale Of the Father’s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega, he the source, the ending he of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore. O that birth forever blessed, when the Virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bore the Savior of our race; and the Babe, the world’s Redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore, O ye heights of heaven, adore him, angel hosts, his praises sing; powers, dominions, bow before him, and extol our God and King; let no tongue on earth be silent, every voice in concert ring. Evermore and evermore. Christ, to thee with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to thee; hymn and chant and high thanksgiving: and unwearied praises be. Honor, glory, and dominion, and eternal victory, evermore and evermore. THE MYSTERY OF CHRISTMAS

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming Michael Praetorius –Jan Sandström Lo, how a rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung, of Jesse’s lineage coming, by faithful prophets sung. It came a flow’ret bright, amid the cold of winter, when half spent was the night. Before the Marvel of This Night Carl Schalk Before the marvel of this night, adoring fold your wings and bow, then tear the sky apart with light and with your news the world endow. Proclaim the birth of Christ and peace, that fear and death and sorrow cease; sing peace, sing gift of peace.

Noel! Christmas Concert 2021 The Lamb John Tavener Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Gave thee life, and bid thee feed by the stream and o’er the mead; gave thee clothing of delight, softest clothing, wooly, bright; gave thee such a tender voice, making all the vales rejoice? Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee; He is called by thy name, for he calls himself a Lamb. He is meek and he is mild; he came a little child. I, child, and thou a lamb, we are called by his name. Little Lamb, God bless thee! Wexford Carol Irish Carol, arr. Mark Sedio With David Powell, oboe Good people all, this Christmas-time, consider well and bear in mind what our good God for us has done in sending his beloved Son. With Mary holy we should pray to God with love this Christmas Day: In Bethlehem upon that morn, there was a blessed Messiah born. Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep their flocks of lambs, and feeding sheep; to whom God’s angels did appear, which put the shepherds in great fear. “Prepare and go,” the angels said, “To Bethlehem, be not afraid; for there you’ll find this happy morn a princely Babe, sweet Jesus born.” With thankful heart and joyful mind the shepherds went the babe to find and, as God’s angel had foretold, they did our Savior Christ behold. Within a manger he was laid, and by his side the Virgin maid attending on the Lord of life, who came on earth to end all strife, who came on earth that Christmas night. Gloria! Betelehemu

Nigerian Carol, arr. Barrington Rhodes Sung in the Yoruba language With David Abubekr and David Holden, percussion We are glad that we have a Father to trust. We are glad that we have a Father to rely upon. Where was Jesus born? Where was he born? Bethlehem, the city of wonder. That is where the Father was born for sure. Praise be to Him. We thank Thee, we thank Thee for this day, gracious Father. Praise be to Thee, merciful Father.

SINGING AT COURT WITH OUR GUESTS (Lyrics are printed on the Carol Sing page.) Deck the Hall What Child Is This? Silent Night O Come, All Ye Faithful THE JOYS OF CHRISTMAS Alfred Burt Carols Alfred Burt These delightful carols are the result of a tradition begun by the Reverend Bates G. Burt, his composer son, Alfred, and Wihla Huston, a friend of the family. For many years these three collaborated on the creation of original carols, which were then sent to friends as Christmas cards. Caroling, Caroling We’ll Dress the House The Twelve Days of Christmas arr. Earlene Rentz This is a rollicking, lively setting of a familiar carol, complete with choreography.

Noel! Christmas Concert 2021 Wonderful Peace Gustav Nordqvist Gustav Nordqvist, writing in the early 1900’s in the late Romantic nationalistic style, penned “Jul, jul, stråland jul,” which manages to be simultaneously dreamy and intensely yearning. Verse 1 will be sung in Swedish by Ms. Bowles. Peace, wonderful peace, peace to the world is given. Hush’d are the angels, so still is the night; then in the East shone a heavenly light. Join in the chorus His praises sing! Glory to God, to the newly born King. Peace, peace, wonderful peace, peace to the world is given. Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day arr. Howard Helvey We end our concert with this English carol, arranged for choir and piano, 4 hands. Tomorrow shall be my dancing day; I would my true love did so chance to see the legend of my play, to call my true love to my dance: Sing O my love; this have I done for my true love.

And we will (hopefully) keep singing!

Noel! Christmas Concert 2021 WHAT CHILD IS THIS? Solo: What child is this, who laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds’s watch are keeping? All sing refrain: This, this is Christ the king, whom shepherds guard and angels sing: Haste, haste to bring him laud, The babe, the son of Mary. Women: Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear; for sinners here the silent word is pleading.
