It’s Spring. Which is is always fun. Spring means free chocolate, scantily dressed college tourists with equally scantily dressed morals and summer isn’t here yet so you don’t feel like you’ve failed completely on your New Year’s Resolution--yet. What is there not to love about Spring in The Bahamas? Well it rains, a lot, and if there is one thing that Bahamians are truly patriotic about is “the shining sun”. We need the sun, we crave it and despite it being the subject of numerous complaints when we have to engage in out door activity, we feel at a lost when it is not around. So this Spring be prepared, bring your umbrellas so that you don’t miss out on all the excitement because of a couple drops of water--or better yet expand your cultural repertoire and be prepared to dance in the rain. (feel free to read that as a metaphor for life)

With the Vodka craze trending as the new “IT” beverage, everyone and their second cousin is now trying to develop a vodka brand to get in on the profits. In order to stand out from the crowd, vodka brands are becoming more and more creative with packaging and flavours that would range from the single ingredient to the sweet and fruity. Chopin Vodka has chosen not to follow the pack, but has elected to produce vodkas created with the finest ingredients and greatest integrity. These Vodkas are 100% Estate Distilled and Bottled, meaning the producers manage the quality of the product from the farming of the base ingredient to its bottling. Au-Natural @ Afrotique Owner & Operator of Afrotique Natural Hair Salon Sheki Carey is a bright and bubbly character who has a serious passion for caring & styling natural hair. A few months ago she launched a line of natural hair care products. So we passed through the salon to get the inside scoop on the products and her deep love of hair care
WORDS BY PHOTOS BY
Minasje Donald Knowles
When did you first realize you wanted to get into hair care and where did you start?
I loved dabbling with hair from I was probably about 10 but I realized at maybe 15/16 that I wanted to take it seriously. I would have gotten my start in 2000 at Good Hair Salon where I was trained by the proprietor herself Karen Wallace. I furthered with certification and workshop courses throughout the years.
What is it about hair care you love?
I think what I love most about Haircare is the creative aspect of it. I love consulting with a client and assessing what the end result would be. I love being a part of the growing process and most of all its transformation, from just there.....to fierce!!
How do you feel hair relates to personal style and look?
Hair so-ho-ho.... definitely relates to personal style because most times your hairstyle tells you what you want to wear (lol)! I think the way you wear your hair reflects your personality which definitely affects your personal style. For example a person like me..I wear my hair big....and blonde....and carefree...it looks happy and fun! And that’s my personality, it leads to the choices I make in which shoes I buy what dress I would wear and the rest that follows.
Tell us about your products Curl-Me-Crazy? My products..(smiles) My New babies i call them. My products are a line of organic Hair & Body care made for the entire family. Handmade with The Best Natural and Organic ingredients to bring out the best results from our Heads to our toes!
What was your inspiration behind creating your product line?
Initially, I was inspired to hand make products because after I had my son Mahrlen-Jai; interestingly I developed eczema. So I was almost forced to discontinue the use of some of my favorite products. Especially shampoos, and leave- in conditioners. After purchasing the expensive American brands , I decided I wanted to make my own products using ingredients that I knew would work well for me. As I saw the difference it made with my skin and hair as well as my family, I started in cooperating organic and raw ingredients to my clients so they would receive the same results I did. I then decided I needed to do a trial run so that I would be able to service Afrotique’s clients on a constant basis with organic products and also be able to carry them home. We currently make 8 products which include The leave in conditioner, nourish and shine pomade, lock and twist butter, scalp needs, today oil, sweet hair jelly, head to toe butter, and body polishes.
What separates your product from the competition?
What separates us from the competition I think is first of all we are Handmade in the Bahamas! Secondly, being a Hair Care specialist I make products with the thought in mind knowing exactly what the customer needs, because I have first hand knowledge rather than some of the competition who’s first priority is the almighty dollar, love of healthy hair second or not of much concern at all; who rarely do research to figure out what the customer does need. WE KNOW. Which forces us to take our time and customize based on the need of our client.
What type of product would you advise persons to stay away from?
I would definitely advise naturals .....as much as you can help it, to stay away from products that are loaded with synthetic preservatives such as parabens, petroleum, mineral oils and sulphates. What we don’t realize is that in some cases these preservatives and additions to products cost more damage than good for some of our hair. The same rules should apply for everything. Im sure we all remember from elementary that we are what we eat. We are what we take in. If we eat well, drink lots of water, exercise all in an effort to maintain a healthy body and lifestyle, why not follow the same routine for our hair?

A DIVERSE JOURNEY THROUGH
LIFE!
“
I would say the biggest misconception is the notion that my pieces are sexual in nature.
“
6 www.elife242.com
When most people meet Donavan Rolle Sr. the first thing that comes to their mind is not that he would be an afluent writer or a published author. Around town when his name comes up in conversation most would reference a gym or some fitness program as he was the first Mr. Caribbean Bahamas and the first Bahamas Body Building Federation Fitness Champion. His main career as an accountant is still a stark contrast to what most people would envision as the writer of a book of poetry [Diverse] that covers the full sweep of human emotions. Donovan calls Diverse the culmination of his work to date, encompassing his numerous and varied life experiences. While many might say that he is relatively young, rest assured that these experiences have been prolific in nature. We catch up with Donavan to talk about the Diversity of Life. How long have you been writing ?
I have been writing very sporadically for about 15years. There are days where I would be inspired to write a few in one sitting. And then there would be times when years would pass before I put pen to paper. Well… key stroke to computer. I actually form more cohesive thoughts at a more rapid pace when I type. Go figure.
What Inspires you to write & is Diverse your first book project?
Life… anything and I mean anything. The words “made from concentrate” and “10% real juice” that I saw on a Blue Bird orange juice can inspired me to write “Red Dye 40”. The same way we would assume that something called ‘juice” should not comprise of only 10% “juice” is the same way that a relationship would more be built on commitment, love and trust, than the 90% fluff of gifts, outside pressures and lies. Yes, it is my first literary project. Absolutely not my last though.
The Book is available on Amazon, how important was getting that type of exposure? Initially the thought process was to accomplish another challenge. To leave some thing that would be here on earth long after I am gone. Most who are familiar with me never knew I write. To be honest I don’t think anyone would have ever thought that I would have written a book. I love challenges, to do what is not expected, to take the path less travelled. Whap! Another challenge/goal accomplished. The publicity aspect grew the more time was spent in production, editing, evolution of photos, book name changes, page layout, book layout, book size, you get the picture. It was not an overnight process. Hey, if you are going to do it, might as well do it big. Might as well do it right. Wa ya say? What was the question again? Oh, that type of exposure is important to the post production of Diverse. Part of me being Diverse is my entrepreneurial spirit, and I wanted to take advantage of any and all avenues to expose my art.
The book Diverse covers a lot of emotions, are these emotions that you have experienced in your life personally? For sure! Well… most are. The reality is, or should I say, I feel that we all have or will experience the full gambit of the emotional spectrum at varied levels. That’s what allows me to write about so many things, love, family life the community….all of our experiences are diverse and this book allowed me to put that on paper.
What is the biggest misconception people have of you when you tell them that you write ?
After we get past “You!” and the “You write?” I would say the biggest misconception is the notion that my pieces are sexual in nature. And while I don’t mind talking about that at all, there are other things that are just or even more important to me like what’s going on in our society, the love I have for the people in my life especially my kids. I cant wait until they are able to read and understand some of the things I have written, and I look forward to hearing what they think of my work.
If you had to explain to a total stranger on what Diverse is ... what would you say ?
My standard response goes something like this - Diverse is structured to transmit the reader through an emotional journey. I firmly believe that if you permit the emotions of the words to be your visual aid, you will experience the highs and the lows, the joys and the pains, laughter and sorrow, as well as peace, tranquility and the reflection Diverse has to offer. Diverse allows you to embrace an array of emotions and I encourage you to accept them as your own. With all of our logic, humans are with out question the species whom experiences the full range of the emotional spectrum. Allow yourself to feel, allow yourself to be human. Allow yourself to be - Diverse. All that is to say, the collection is about some real life stuff bey.

It’s not often that a cover girl gets to wear the clothes she’s made in a photo shoot. It almost never happens. But on a brisk, cool Saturday morning at Potter’s Cay Dock 24-year-old Phylicia Ellis became designer and model. The latter, proving to be a bit of a challenge as the shy, down to earth sewing champ says she’s used to being behind the camera calling the shots and telling other people how to make her clothes look good. “It’s good and scary at the same time because I’m so used to being on the other end and this is new for me.” Phylicia is now on to her second look, jumping into a tan, orange and brown asymmetrical halter with a matching mini skirt underneath. Just minutes earlier she rocked and posed the life out of another colorful piece; a knee-length, fitted dress with bold graphic patterns and eye popping details, both outfits, of course, designed and made by her. The life and color in her pieces had stolen the spotlight from the dock’s longtime residents; the sparkling blue water, the blush and rose pink conch shells and the punchy hues of the fruits that watched enviously in their stalls. Nature’s beauty had met its match. “I was told you have to wear everything that you make, I love this one,” she beams about the two piece get up. “I think this one of my favorite because it’s such a nice print, its colorful but it still has a lot of black. Fabric is my inspiration.” Black and white– a color combination Phylicia says was all she wore for a long period because she was afraid to play with color and she was just trying to play it safe. But a new year ushered in new challenges, new opportunities and new things to try for the fashion designer and the color wheel was on her agenda. “I am new to the color thing,” she adds. “It’s taken me a while to get into this and I think color is one of my biggest inspirations.”

A grouping of designs from Phylicia J. Ellis Designs, from left to right • The Piper Evali Childrens Line • Bridal Designs • Runway Attire, Casual & Party Dresses
The fashion designer is a 2010 graduate of Albright College in Pennsylvania who says immediately after donning her cap and gown, she immersed herself in her budding career and birthed Phylicia Ellis – the brand. For the past seven years, she’s been designing and creating women’s ready-to-wear, special events and bridal pieces that are affordable, accessible and for the everyday woman. Drawing inspiration from famed designers like Vera Wang, Phylicia says while she respects the hustle of other local fashion designers, it’s not really her style to compare and contrast. “I don’t like to compare,” she says shyly but oh, so confidently. “However, I do like the work of Theodore Elyett. It’s out there and different and I really like it.” And Phylicia knows good clothing. Aside from making them herself, she’s worked with the

who’s who in the fashion capital of the world after scoring the internship of a lifetime. “After the three years in college I moved to New York for year and a half which was like the best experience of my life,” she beams. “I worked with a few designers like Victor de Souza and Mandy Coon. I did an internship with them, preparing them for New York Fashion Week and other fashion weeks they may have had. “I think that was a really good experience because, it’s true that you could learn anything in school and you could read all the books you want but until you get the hands on experience with someone already in your industry and in that field it’s the best thing ever. I learned a whole lot from them and I build a lot of confidence in my design work from working with them.” So much confidence, that Phylicia doesn’t just have one clothing line on the market, but two.
“The children’s line is all about bold, vibrant colors. It’s something easy, something fresh. It’s almost effortless for children where you could dress it up or dress it down and still have that relaxed look.” In addition to the Phylicia Ellis brand there’s Piper and Evali (both clothing lines bear her initials) that was created in 2012, because this designer believes that kids should be making fashion statements as well. “I always look at children’s clothes in Nassau and I always see that they have on stockings. Everything is so frilly and big and fluffy. I wanted something simple, detailed, bold bright, like children! And this line definitely depicts that.” But as with every local fashion designer who has at least one line on the market there are challenges, and juggling two simultaneously is proving to be no easy task for the ambitious artist.
“
I don’t like to compare, however, I do like the work of Theodore Elyett!
www.elife242.com 11
It’s been said time and time again that the entertainment and fashion markets in The Bahamas are lacking and quite frankly not being supported by their own countrymen. But Phylicia says, as the old saying goes, where there’s a will, a way isn’t too far behind. “I think if you have your heart and mind set to make money, you will,” Phylicia adds. “The thing is, women will always buy clothing so if you keep that thought it definitely could go far. It’s about finding the right market at the right price. It’s a thriving industry that could definitely work here.” She adds that despite the many challenges, she’s one to always dabble in a lot of things and open doors for herself. “Right now I am just going to focus on my children’s line that I think can do well locally and internationally,” she continues. “I plan to put my time and effort into getting off the ground. “For the Phylicia Ellis brand I see it going far because we don’t have a lot of designers that specialize in bridal and ready-to-wear clothing that’s affordable and accessible.” When it’s not sketching, fabric shopping, cutting and sewing, Phylicia says she partakes in the simple things in life to rest, relax and rejuvenate.
“I’m very carefree, I don’t let much stress me out,” she says smiling. “I enjoy relaxing days with friends and family, just the simple stuff. Even if I just walk on the beach that’s an exciting day for me. One of my fears though, was (what I did today). I do not like taking pictures or the spotlight being on me. It frightens me. But it was good.” And she’s right, the shoot went well and there are pictures to prove it. In the end, becoming a fashion designer was pretty much in the stars for this young Bahamian who is certainly one to watch. To get your hands on her pieces Phylicia has pages set up on Facebook. “Phylicia Ellis” for the adult line and “Piper & Evali” for the kids’ line. She’s hoping to soon set up a website where orders can be shipped and delivered to her customers. Hers is a real story of planning your course, charting that course and actually making it work for you. “I always told myself that I would do something I would love,” Phylicia adds. “In the eleventh grade I decided that fashion was something that I really wanted to do and it is something that makes me happy and I love it!” The next time you get ready dress to the nines or doll up your little ones, check the tags and make sure the initials are nothing but P.E. – Phylicia Ellis or Piper and Evali, of course!
