Our model feature for this month is a model, socialite, bartender and dancer who is pressing hard to achieve her goals in the entertainment industry. She has become well known because of her unique fashion choices...
It’s summer time here in the 242 and as always we celebrate our sand, sun and sea. It has been 41 years for our young country, and we are still learning a lot. Bahamians have even started to question the way the country is being ran and if it truly represents independence. What we at eLIFE 242 have tasked ourselves with is inspiring our generation to believe in indepence. Independence is not something a government can give to you, independence is something that lives inside of you. Independence is what inspires our many artists and musicians to create timeless music and works of art. We are only 41 and we have a lot more to give the world, so the next time someone asks you “are you independent”, tell them to look inside themsellves to find the answer. - eLIFE 242 Magazine | Managing Editor

Even Heineken is getting on that fitness tip and trying to get slim and trim this summer...at least their bottles are. The popular beer brand introduced drinkers to its new 25 cl bottle at a launch party at the Allure Mansion, Ocean Club Estates. The new Heineken 25cl bottle is the latest addition to the Heineken portfolio and features the same great Heineken recipe, a true international premium beer, in a different size; 25 centiliters; a sleeker, more chic green bottle. The new Heineken 25cl bottle is designed to bring about a new experience to drinking your favorite beer that is surely ‘cold 2 www.elife242.com
to the last drop.’ At the launch party which saw hundreds of guests sipping on the famous beer and eating delicious catered hors d’oeuvres, enjoying magic acts and bumping to music, the Heineken brand stole the show as the location was lit green from front to back. Famed Bahamian artist Allan Wallace also graced the event and on site, whipped up an awesome painting featuring the new 25cl bottle. Several well-known faces including media personnel, local artists and businesspeople also graced the event. We’re sure the new Heineken 25cl bottles left the competition green with envy.

Amaretto 242 R&B Newcomer Adria gives us the breakdown on her new music!
FOCUS ON THE MUSIC If you are listening to local radio now, I’m sure you’ve come across the soulful track “The Breakdown” by Adria. The lead single from her EP “Amaretto” has been satisfying the ears of the listeners across the island and has propelled this normally shy and unassuming singer into local pop culture fame. Her voice is angelic and she has been featured on the hooks of numerous tracks by local hip artists. Adria has been a local Youtube and social media sensation for over five years, mainly because she posts homemade videos of her covers or orginal material as she strums a guitar. A dancer, singer, songwriter and easy on the eyes, Adria is a quadruple threat who is poised to take over the music scene worldwide if she stays on course. We chatted with Adria to see what plans she has for the next few years and taking her home grown Bahamian talent to the world. What first inspired your interest in music? A: I’m not exactly sure when it happened, but I knew I wanted to sing about every gadget and gizmo I touched, when I first saw Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” We love the new EP “Amarretto, but we have to ask what inspired the name? A: To this day, I have had one and only one Amaretto Sour (I promise on Jesus’ sandals) but I loved it. It was smooth, it was bittersweet, and then out of nowhere, the effects sorta smack you awake. Much like amare/amore, which is at the base of the word amaretto, meaning “love.” So I thought it a fitting title for my EP as love’s been a bittersweet ride for me. What would you say is your favorite track from the EP? A: Ahhh, it always changes. Right now it’s September. (My mother told me to tell you that she didn’t tell me to say that btw)

You have been in the local game for a while, what inspired you to make big steps this year? A: I want to say puberty and my government job. I grew up a little more and decided there’s no way I’m gonna just sit behind a desk playing solitaire on easy. I’ve wanted to make moves for a long time but I’d never gotten so frightened at the thought of staying behind a desk or being frustrated by a broken A/C and coworkers for the rest of my life. (sidenote: I won a round of Spider Solitaire on difficult AT HOME ;))

FOOD LOVERS GATHER FOR A NIGHT OF FUN, FOOD AND ADULT PARTYING UNDER THE CARIBBEAN MOON!
Who are some of the people who have inspired your sound and helped you to develop it? A: I’ve been getting inspiration from the days of Much Music channel so this is hard to narrow down. Sadé, The Spice Girls, Angela McCluskey, Iman Omari and my mom (again, she didn’t make me say that). What is something people may not know about Adria? A: Something some people may not know about me is I LOVE empty movie theaters but I’m afraid of being in the dark alone. I know those people at Galleria Cinemas are so sick and tired of me. Where can we expect to see Adria in the year 2015? A: *fingers crossed* I’ve got my heart set on SXSW 2015 in Austin!! You’re sure to see me on television and invading your interwebs too with visuals for my audio! Oh, I’m also working on a few top secret projects with a few friends so 2015 is gonna be HUGE!

UNDER THE CARIBBEAN MOON WAS THE PERFECT WAY TO BRING SUMMER 2014.
Bonfires, Carib-Asian cuisine, music, a bar and the Caribbean moon. These things all set the stage for the fourth annual event, Under the Caribbean Moon, that draws summer crazed party goers to the Maillis Farm at Adelaide each year to kick off the sweetest time of the year. Put on by the same people who brought you the first annual Festival Rum Bahamas along with Events by Alexandra, Under the Caribbean Moon was the perfect way
to welcome summer 2014. Partygoers mingled along the shoreline and feasted on a delicious spread of foods inspired by Caribbean and Asian cuisines and of course a bar stocked with goodies, while two bon fires ferociously danced in the background. As it was on a farm, the scents of freshly riped mangoes and star fruits coated the night time air. There was definitely no better place to start summer than under the Caribbean moon. www.elife242.com 5

It was a grill off that saw all the BBQ masters on the island go pitchfork to pitchfork in the annual competition held on the Green Parrot ground on East Bay Street. As soon as patrons hit the gate, the scents of deliciously grilled chicken, pork and hot dogs excited their taste buds. Food lovers in attendance were also treated to the music of a live band and a DJ who kept the house rocking in between bites. And you know it’s a hot event when you have volun-

But while it was all fun and games for the fans, the various BBQ chefs were serious about their business and worked hard to wow the judges. In the end the grill masters of Gone Fish’n took home the win! Haymish Moxey and his team could be seen battling away all day at their station and it surely did pay off. Next year we’re predicting the competition will be even hotter, with hopes that the sun doesn’t enter the race this time! WHEW!

But while some can boast that these influential, and mostly iconic figures have graced their presence, so can The Celebrity Artist Jamaal Rolle.

think there was anything special about me and my talent.” Still, Jamaal says deep down he knew there was something more to his skill than it just being a family trait.
“Since I was four-years-old I knew art was special. I used to draw up on the walls and I would get a beating and still draw. I knew either I was crazy or it was just something about art that I loved.
So if Jamaal’s artistic talent couldn’t shine among his family, then he saw to it that his artistic capabilities were front and center where it mattered most.
“Whenever something special was happening at school, like Christmas or end of school year, I would be the one to decorate the chalk board,” he adds. “Or if there was a diagram to draw for science class I would be the one the But during our interview one Sunday, teacher would ask to do it. Soon enough, his talent was coveted by more than his teachers; Jamaal’s class“My dad is an artist and I have 12 broth- mates would now jump on that banders and sisters and we all are artists as wagon and draft him to draw whatever well,” he says chuckling. “So growing they needed. up it was nothing special about me being an artist or being able to draw. We But unlike the teachers, they’d have to all had that skill so back then I didn’t pay. “I remember the first thing I drew was a sail boat. It was actually a painting and I stuck it on my room door. That’s where it all started.”
“I decided that I could turn this into a business,” the 30-year-old father of two young girls says. “I told the boys if they wanted me to draw something they would have to give me $1 and if the girls wanted a drawing they would have to give me a kiss. So I was a businessman from primary school. I didn’t really care about the dollars, I just wanted the kisses and it worked because I got a few. So that’s exactly where my business savvy kicked in.” From primary school to junior high and senior schools, The Celebrity Artist says he continued to draw whatever and whenever he could, just to sharpen and fine-tune his skills. Like most young men with a dream to be something other than a doctor, lawyer or traditional businessman, Jamaal says the same old run of the mill hour long high school classes simply didn’t interest him, but he says switching over from one school to the next, he almost missed out on a crucial opportunity to hone his craft and fall even more in love.

“In RM Bailey High School when I went, there was no more space in the art class,” Jamaal says. “So my only other options were music, dance and drama. I remember going to a few of the teachers and complaining that I wanted to be in art and I needed to be in art but the classes were full.
After that, the artist says even more teachers requested various drawings from him and, yes, these ones were all paid gigs.
“So I went home and did a portrait of the principal and took it to her and explained it to her that I wanted to be an artist and I needed to get in that class. I can’t tell you which other student got kicked out but the next day all I know is I was sitting in that art class.”
Mr. Knowles died in early July, 2014.
Fresh out of high school, Jamaal says he worked with Founder of the Roots Junkanoo Group Paul “Diamond” Knowles at Abilities Unlimited.
“It was through working with him that I started thinking differently about my skills and started thinking out of the box. It wasn’t just art for me anymore. I thought about it more like a business. At his new gig, Jamaal had displayed a photo he had drawn of President Obama and American journalist and author Maria Shriver who was in town at the time, saw it and fell in love. “So she took a photo with the portrait and it made the international news,” he says. Up to this point, Jamaal had never travelled outside the country before, but he had a plan to take his work from The Bahamas to Washington. During the 2008 US presidential elections, Jamaal says he fell in love with Barack Obama’s campaign and drew a portrait of Obama, Martin Luther King Jr. and Al Sharpton and decided that someone in Washington needed to see it. “I saw online that there was an event happening in Washington, DC, before Obama’s first inauguration and as a person who had never ever travelled before, I booked a flight to Washington with no invitation, no plan and alone,” he remembers. “It was crazy for me to take a leap of faith and I was by myself. The farthest I’d ever made it before this was at the Miami airport, I had never been to the states before this and I did this alone. Millions of people travelled for that and I had a cousin who lived in Virginia and I stayed with her. So I took the subway, learned the color lines and I made it to the event.” Carrying the large portrait in his hand, but still lost, afraid and without any plan to get in the event, Jamaal says while no physical manifestation of a human being was present, he knew, somehow, that he wasn’t alone. “Everybody was being searched and some guy just walked up to me and said, ‘Sir, this is your door here,’” he says. “I don’t know what that meant, I don’t know what made him single me out, but I am convinced it was an act of God. He just walked up to me and ushered me into this door and I was literally inside the event. “I had the opportunity to see Al Sharpton and got him to see my drawing. At the end of the event I ended up saying a speech on behalf of The Bahamas. After that I knew I had to keep going.” www.elife242.com 11

There are a lot of hip hop artists in The Bahamas. It seems as if any guy with a MAC laptop and Pro Tools is suddenly a rapper. In that haze of rappers and producers, the self proclaimed King of Nassau, with the clever stage name, Nassus is becoming a social media wrecking ball and building a brand at the same time. His music and his tweets are one in the same, so we wanted to get into the mind of an upcoming hip hop artist in The Bahamas.
So how long have you been a lyricist? I’ve been heavily into lyricism and deeper content I guess all my life seeing Nas is my favorite rapper of all time but I use to rap battle on an online forum from 2005 and it was all about lyrics because all we could do is type our raps so my mission after being reborn to Nassus was to showcase that. How would you best describe your style? My style I don’t know if it’s one way to describe it, idk God like lol. How important is social media to you? I actually hate people in real life so social media is my way of not having to physically see people but then I’ve realized that I hate people’s thoughts even more lol. I have a love hate relationship with it. I think a lot and really don’t talk to a lot of people so it’s my way

of getting my thoughts out. I actually save things in my drafts during the day to send out later. Some of your tweets are real heavy, what inspires your daily tweet barage? I think it depends on the mood I wake up in and the energy around me at the time. Some days I go in on relationship issues, sometimes it’s around music, black history, religion and spirituality and other days I’m being ignorant, not talking bullshit but being ignorant because I still have everyday struggles as a human in this generation and as someone still kinda active in the streets I get lost in it at times but I never tweet unless I got something to say or I just wanna get it off quick, but never ever lied one time. Tell us about your latest muical release? My latest single was the highly successful hit, Regrets, featuring Sketch Carey, which I’m pleased to see do so well after my time off trying to find myself and mainly because I lived that situation and after creating a record in which I’m telling a old love interest she’ll regret the way things turned out it damn sure better had been successful, lol. What’s next for you, the music & social media? Next up I have two singles and videos for Regrets and a record called Drink currently playing in Memphis. I don’t know with social media because I’m bipolar AF so I may disappear completely lol but while I’m here I’ll keep spreading the message of Nassus as written in the Book Of Nassus.

Island Rebel Swimwear Line For Summer Newcomer to the fashion business Kristen Cartwright proves that she is the one to watch when it comes to custom swimwear here in The Bahamas. With the launch of her Island Rebel line recently at the National Art Gallery she has caught the eye of many who were not aware of the designer’s swimsuit creation prowess. With a line that includes over 15 different swimsuit designs Kristen says she feels the line represents her yearning to be different and create a
line that ‘rebels’ against the norms of what people feel a swimsuit should look like. The fashion show was well received by all who were there and patrons were excited to get their hands on custom suits by the designer. Kristen who has only been designing and sewing her swimsuits for a little over a year says she is happy with the showing and is already dreaming up designs for her third line.- FOLLOW @DKLYPSE on Instagram.

Andros Crabfest 2014 draws in the BIG crowds to the BIG yard!
Over 10,000 people swarmed to the largest island of The Bahamas recently for the long-awaited Crab Fest. Bahamians from all across the archipelago and visitors from China, Greece, Belgium, England and the United States came to Central Andros for what officials say is the most exciting culinary experience in The Bahamas and arguably the entire Caribbean. This year was hailed as “better than ever” by Andros native and Chairman
of the cultural -heritage festival Peter Douglas. The event started a few years ago with two to three vendors serving a few crab dishes to now scores of vendors preparing the crabs in many different ways. Crab Fest attendees also enjoyed a watermelon-eating contest, heritage games, and a “keep what you catch” crab competition. In the future, officials plan to expand and become the world’s premier crab culinary event.

Tyrelle ‘New Nu’ Knowles AGE: 22 HEIGHT: 5’3 SIGN: SCORPIO
So tell us about New Nu?
Where do I begin... New’Nu is the nickname I was given because of the way I dress, style and the way I always switched things up and wore things differently. New’Nu is just my fun name.
What makes up a real fun day for you?
Well work brings a lot of joy and fun to my day seeing different personalities and the way people react, makes my day fun. Also taking time out to shop and hanging with family and friends when ever I get time off.
What do you believe is your sexiest feature?
Hmmm I would believe that my sexiest features are my lips. I always tend to get compliments on them. Good Kisser.
We know you are a bartender, what’s your favorite thing about serving up drinks?
Well being a bartender is a whole lot of fun sometimes. People come in the bar not knowing what they would like to drink, so I always start them off with a shot a named after me; The “My Ty”.

I think Russia & Tokyo would be great places to visit!
I would believe that my sexiest features are my lips. I always tend to get compliments on them. What should guys know about you before stepping to you?
Before any guy makes an attempt to come to me, he should know that his approach will either make or break every other move after that. I am very intimidating and have a strong personality.
Where are we going to see New Nu in the next few years?
In the next years God spares life, I will most likely have my own business either a clothing store or one of the best bars in The Bahamas.
