Heart Ball

WORDS BY PHOTOS BY

The Heart Ball Committee Peter Ramsay

It was an evening of glitz, glamour and fun, filled with gold, black and cream. The 50th Annual Heart Ball was on full swing at the Mèlia Nassau Beach. Under the theme “Celebrating the Golden Anniversary of a Vision…Championing the Cause of Children,” Heart Ball supporters dined, danced and partied the night away, but all for charity. Performances by The S-G Band (Soulful Groovers), The Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band and The Royal Bahamas Defense Force Dance Band, Bahamian musician Rik Carey all kept the crowd swinging. And of course there were were prizes and surprises to be won! A number of attendees walked away gifts like Cartier timepieces, artwork and even hotel stays. The annual Heart Ball is the major fundraiser for The Heart Ball Committee, the fundraising arm of The Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation. The Foundation’s main goal is to help repair the hearts of children, who cannot ordinarily afford the sometimes life saving 2 www.elife242.com

operations. The Heart Foundation is a nonprofit organization that relies heavily upon the generosity of others. To date the Heart Foundation has helped to repair the hearts of over 4,000 patients. The public’s support can help The Heart Foundation to continue repairing hearts of those most vulnerable, the children. Heart Ball Committee’s Public Relations Officer Ingrid Sears said, “It was a great evening. The 50th Annual Heart Ball was well attended. We are truly grateful for the support shown to us by the prime minister of our country and his wife, The governor general and his wife, our patrons, sponsors and donors. We hope to continue to champion the cause of children and encourage the public to help us as we seek to repair the hearts of children”.

FOCUS ON THE MUSIC Ordain’s love for music and passion for writing is what has become the driving force behind her sexy soulful songs that truely express her love for music. Her goal for her sound is to resemble the feel and sound of the R&B songs of the 80’s. With the help and guidance from many Bahamian musicians and artist like Puzzleman, Sketch Carey, Neil Symonette, Don Campbell, Naomi Taylor, Clint Crawford, Adrian Diagular, Lee & Joan Callender, Ordain gained the confidence she needed to progress with her musical dream. One of Ordain’s favourite parts about being an artist is personal growth; how she can hear the difference between then and now by simply listening to her tracks.

ORDAINED

What first inspired you interest in music? A: I don’t know if something or someone ever, sparked an interest or inspired my love for music, I honestly think it’s embedded in my DNA... Like I had no choice. My mother would tell me stories of me singing before I could walk.

This year Ordain has numerous releases planned, one having already passed being the release of the Grab On My Waist ft. American rap artist Nan Savage music video. The video was recorded a year prior to its January 2014 release. Adding to her already high enthusiasm Ordain shows a lot of excitement in regards to her more current projects and can’t wait to share what she calls a “More Modern Ordain”. Her favourite quote is “To get more than you have, you have to become more than you are” . We sat down with Ordain and asked her a few questions about her 2014.

How have you been managing the hussle and bussle of the music business? A: As far as managing the hussle and bussle.. I believe the bigger your struggle, the harder your fight; the sweeter the victory, the better the story... In other words I embrace it all.. After the January release of Grab on my Waist, how has the response to your music been? A: After my January release, the response has been tremendously positive and encouraging.. I’m tickled by the amount of support I’ve received Which producers are you working with on upcoming projects? A: For my up coming project I am currently working with a mentor and producer named Lathan Armor along with the amazing team of the Akatomy.. However I’m always looking out for another creative partnership, so the list can increase at anytime.

If you could see December 2014 right now in your mind where do you see Ordain and the Ordain brand? A: If I could see December clearly, I know growth would have to be the first thing I notice.. I’m always striving to improve in my artistry. Second my brands influence would have increased considerably, along with its portfolio i.e. Apperances, performances, collaborations, and features.

The Bahamas was once again graced with the talents of international performing artist during this year’s Celebration of Love Concert put on by Fresh Entertainment. This year’s lineup included the likes of Johnny Gill. Ginuwine and the headliner Fantasia Barrino of American Idol fame. The artist took to the stage on February 22nd under the Pavilion on Arawak Cay to a crowd of excited fans who were excited to see them. Bahamian artist Julien, Angelique Sabrina and 4EVA1 opened up the concert with exciting performances that rocked the crowd. Some concert goers were pleasantly surprised by the level of talent displayed by the Bahamian artist and ap-

plauded them for the great performances. Next to the stage was Ginuwine who gave the audience a bevy of hits from his jams like “Pony” and “In Those Jeans”. Johnny Gill brought in the old school and had the ladies swooning to hits like “My My My”. After Mr. Gill was done with his set the beautiful and gifted Fantasia brought the house down with a high energy set of all her hit tracks and closing out with her current #1 “Win Again” which some described as a religious experience. Overall the concert was a great success and dollar for dollar worth it for the great performances put on by all who made the stage.

BAHAMIAN FASHION SOCIALITE KISHANNA SANDS TURNS HER ONLINE POPULARITY INTO FASHION DESIGN SUCCES!

#PORTOF PARADISE Prime Minister Perry Christie’s Facebook fan page has 5,314 likes.

Hubert Ingraham’s Facebook fan page has 542 likes. Kishanna Sands has 7,471, that, plus 19,890 Facebook followers and 6000+ followers on Instagram. Stew on that for a minute! To say that fashion designer Kishanna Sands is dominating the local social media scene right now is an understatement. She’s definitely pulling in the numbers with thousands of local and international admirers who follow her every style move. It’s a humid Sunday morning in Nassau and the Port of Paradise CEO and I are plopped onto a queen size bed in the master bedroom of a plush, luxurious condominium, just two girls chatting it up about fashion and life. Her sky high gold spiked Louboutin pumps rest at the feet of the bed as we prop up on pillows to gossip and relax after her photo shoot.

8 www.elife242.com 8 www.elife242.com

She’s wearing two of her own pieces; a matching red mini-skirt and top, both of which she just modeled to perfection. “For me it’s very fulfilling to dream up a design or think it over and put it to paper,” she says. Kishanna promises that if she were to post a photo of her wearing that, or any outfit, it would get nearly 1,000 likes in minutes. A simple flip through Kishanna’s photos on either her personal or professional pages would prove this theory.

For me it’s very fulfilling to dream up a design or think it over and put it to paper,

LEFT- GATHERED ASYMMETRICAL SKIRT WITH A TIED FRONT BUTTONED DOWN BALLOON SLEEVE CROP TOP. RIGHT- TAPARED FLARED MAXI SKIRT PAIRED WITH LEATHER STRAPPED BANDEAU TOP AND NATIVE HEAD WRAP.

“People just really like my work and would follow me. I had a particular design that I did and, I kid you not, in a matter of about three to four hours I had over 20,000 likes and hundreds of emails. This was late 2012 and that’s kind of where it all started for me on social media.

DESIGNED BY PORT OF PARADISE

This was the same year Kishanna participated in and won the design portion of local fashion and art showcase FashArt. “I would get a lot of style features on social media,” she adds. A lot of style pages would feature my stuff and it’s kind of strange because I Googled myself the other day and I was so amazed at the amount of websites and blogs that I found my designs on and how many people would post about them. “That was the first time I Googled myself and it was so heartwarming for me. I didn’t even know that it was that widespread. It’s definitely free advertisement, obviously. I’ve noticed that people in the U.S. have become more receptive of my style because it’s so different from what they would see. I bring a modern flair but with an island touch to it. People are really intrigued that an island girl would even have style like this.” When most little girls were begging their parents to buy new clothes for their dolls, Kishanna says she was too busy making clothes for hers. “Designing has been a passion since I was nine years old. I actually got in trouble a lot because I used to take a lot of pieces my mom had for her clients and cut them up and make clothes for my dolls, I think that’s where it all started.” But for a few years, she parted ways with her passion to pursue other interests and quickly realized that sketching clothes and designing outfits was where she needed to be. “My actual break in the fashion industry was a long journey. I actually started out as a makeup artist,” she explains. “I always wanted to be in the fashion and beauty industry but I never pictured myself hands on as a designer. “I think it’s that, ‘I didn’t choose the field, the field chose me’ cliché. I went to the College of The Bahamas and got my certification in makeup artistry and I was doing makeup with my mom for a couple of years. To me, I enjoyed doing it but it wasn’t a passion of mine. But now being a designer I realize that it’s another skill that I have and its very beneficial. So after a couple years of doing makeup I kind of got bored with it.” 10 www.elife242.com www.elife242.com 10

And that’s w h e n t h e 25-year-old got bold. She teamed up with her mother, a veteran seamstress, and started her own company, which started off being called Peace of Paradise but quickly evolved into the now insanely popular clothing line Port of Paradise. “Me and my mom are a design duo – she’s the behind the scenes person: the eyes, the ears and everything. I’m more of the brains of the company,” Kishanna says. A company that’s now known for its bold styles, popping colors, sharp structures and intricate details. It really takes a special and fierce kind of woman to rock Port of Paradise. “My inspiration comes from my own personality,” she says smiling. “I have a very colorful personality. I’m a very girly personality, fun loving and there is a part of me that’s fearless and fierce and edgy but then I have a side that’s soft and feminine so I merge the two when I come up with my designs. So it’s really a collaboration of the two sides of my personality.”

I’m trying to cross over from being this fashion socialite into a serious fashion industry mogul Kishanna says she loves designing pieces with an “80’s, futuristic feel.” “I’m an 80’s baby so I’m still stuck in that era and I’m fascinated by the colors, the bold prints, the strong shoulders and the detail. So with a lot of my pieces I merge styles from the 80’s with modern styles.” For a woman who says she designed and made 98 per cent of what’s in her wardrobe it’s easy to keep up with fashion trends and what’s in style these days, or in her case set trends for others to follow. But this skill poses some trouble for Kishanna. “I did my first full collection in the Christmas and it’s kind of weird because people love those pieces, but it seems everything I wear people just want it,” she says. “Even though I did that full collection, the personal designs I did for myself are what they want. But I really don’t like to do original designs that I create for myself, for people. It’s kind of a bittersweet

moment when people ask me to make something that I designed for myself. I’m loving that they love my designs but it’s kind of hard to keep it just mine.” And although she’s often seen flexing on Facebook and Instagram in elaborate get ups, Kishanna says she likes to keep it simple. “I enjoy wearing more casual pieces,” the designer says of her everyday style. “People think I’m more glamorous and over the top but I’m really not. I prefer to be laid back and comfortable. “So I might design something nice and simple to go to a pool party. I just prefer maxi dresses or something simple, that’s just more my style.” And leave it up to social media to keep Kishanna on style watch everyday! While she credits social media for much of her success, Kishanna says the addictive sites have their downfalls. “I would post a design and specifically ask people to contact me by email if they have inquiries, but people would still comment under the photo asking about the price and what’s not,” she says rolling her eyes. “If I wanted to publicize the price I would. This is why I tell people to email. “Another thing I don’t like is when people ask me about my body, about my weight and about my shape. I’m not selling me, I’m selling my designs. They ask me about my diet regimen, about my work out plan, about which parts of my body are real and which aren’t. I’m trying to sell my designs and it’s hard.

COVER STORY

And that’s where being a social media queen bee also poses a problem for Kishanna – crossing over from being just that. “I think for me being a designer now, I’m trying to cross over from being this fashion socialite into a serious fashion industry mogul and professional. I’m now working on being taken more seriously as a 25-year-old fashion designer. That’s a challenge now for me. I would post designs and people would ask me if it’s for sale, if I’m making this for someone or if I’m just heading out and showing off my latest outfit. So I want to be taken more seriously and I am now at that crossover stage from a socialite who likes to dress up and go out to now somebody who is branding myself and building my company. So that’s a challenge now.” But Kishanna says she’s hard at work in earning the respect she deserves through positive publicity, networking, using professional models to be the face of the company and promoting her brand. “I’m trying to go beyond social media now,” Kishanna says, a focused gaze now in her eyes. “Now of course I can’t forget what social media has done for me because that’s where I kind of got my start. But I want people to know it’s not just about the dressing up anymore, but that I’m serious.” And a serious fashion designer never stops working. Kishanna is currently working on her spring and summer collection, which is due out in April. “Most people don’t know, but I actually designed a piece for American model and actress Lashontae Heckard she was in the movie ATL and she also stars in BET’s The Game,” Kishanna gushed. “I did a piece for her in the Christmas. But initially I reached out to many celebrities and people were like, ‘Kishanna is crazy, she’s never going to get a response from these people.’ I reached out to about 10 celebrities and I was like, ‘Lord I would be happy if only one person responds,’ and her managers responded right away and they loved the pieces and I sent her off three items. She absolutely loved them and she sent me back an email just to tell me that she loved the pieces and that she can’t wait to wear them. It was so heartwarming for me and to happen to early so on in my career.” But the actress isn’t the only one to take Port of Paradise to the world. Kishanna says a number of her U.S. based clients are also donning Port of Paradise and constantly ordering more. With so many local designers emerging Kishanna says it’s her loyalty to herself that will keep her one step above the rest. “I’m true to my line and I’m true to what I do. For me it’s not what’s trending, or what’s hot, or what people like. When I come up with my designs I don’t think about anybody else, I don’t think about people would like or what they would feel. It’s all about me. Like I say my line is a merge of my two personalities so when I compose a line I’m true to it and how I see fashion from my point of view, this is what Port of Paradise is. I love what I do and it’s a passion.”

242 MUSIC UPNEXT

Reporting Live LOCAL HIP HOP ARTIST TAKES ON THE ISSUE OF CRIME IN THE BAHAMAS!

Bahamian Hip Hop Artist EJay Sargeant is already making waves in the 242 music scene as one of the country’s up and coming producers. Just recently he has decided to release a track that chronicles the hard times the country has experienced concerning crime and other issues. We sat down with the budding producer to talk about what inspired this piece of hip hop poetry! So how long have you been producing? I have been producing for about 12 years now. How would you describe your production style? Ahhhh!!! Tough question. I have so many different ways I tend to do things. I would have to say adaptable. If you give me some acoustic ethnic instruments and tell me to make a techno song I’ll probably find a way to get it done. (lol) But one of my favorite bass players and legendary musician Jaco Pastorius said “Music is in the air, you just have to find ways to pull it out!” And thats the approach I take when I compose my music. I set the mood and get to work! What first inspired you to get into music? I feel as if music is what I was born to do. Ever since I can remember hearing music I always pictured the people involved would just be inside the radio playing! So from a young age I always wanted to learn how music was made. So its something that I always knew I wanted to do. Yes I am a music freak! “Reporting Live” has been getting a lot of rave reviews, why do you think the public has connected with it?

EJAY SARGENT

I was shocked with the response from “Reporting Live.” Old and young people were actually listening word for word and they felt the song! Thanks to those who showed support! I felt the song was timely, based on the things that were happening in Nassau at the time and I wanted to share my views on the city. I’m glad that people accepted it. It is one of my goals to make sure that my music is something people can relate to. From the response I got people are ready to hear more. Its only the beginning. Is social commentary something you incorporate into a lot of your music? Yeah. I make my music based on how I feel about what’s happening around me. There is a whole lot that needs to change and I feel that everybody should be aware of whats really happening and I feel that music is an effective tool to create that awareness. But there is gonna be some FUN MUSIC! What’s next for eJay ? Who knows! Travel is always in the mix. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some good people so I plan to do some traveling this year to gain some more exposure and make a name for The Bahamas in the music industry. I’m working on my own mixtape to be released this year. I’ve been pushing production on the international market. I recently had a feature from Gudda Gudda of YMCMB on one of my tracks. I’m staying humble and hungry at the same time! I’m excited about what’s to come.

Seafood Bouillabaisse INGREDIENTS

• Shrimp • Snapper • Mussels • Scallops • Seafood Broth • Tomato Purée • Zucchini • Carrots • Yellow Squash • Salt

To start you must make a Seafood broth which is made of roasted fish bones, shrimp shells, a mire poix, bay leaves and water. Simmer until flavorful. In a medium pot heat up a small amount of tomato purée and about four cups of broth, season with salt. Cut the vegetables in the shape of a tourney and blanch them in boiling water. Pan fry the fish filets, the shrimps and scallops after seasoning. The mussels and vegetables are heated in the broth and will retain the flavor. To assemble, ladle the broth in the bottom of a bowl, add the fish filet, one shrimp, several scallops, one mussel and one of each vegetable.

This month we feature Nassuvian beauty and nursing student Natelia Stubbs, who is the epitome of beauty and brains. At age 22 she is well on her way to achieving all her personal and career goals.

Natelia Stubbs AGE: 22 HEIGHT: 5’1 SIGN: SAGITTARIUS

So Natelia tell us about yourself?

I don’t really like talking about myself but if I would be asked I would describe myself as very determined, career driven and ambitious. However, my friends would describe the other half of me as weird, sweet, soft hearted, funky, cool, love to laugh and the color pink.

What are your career ambitions?

Presently I am an undergraduate of The College of the Bahamas studying geriatric nursing .

What do you believe is your sexiest feature?

*Laughs* This is such a vain question but I believe that my eyes are my favorite feature. I love that they are big, brown and full of mystery and I truly believe that the eyes are the gateway to really knowing someone.

Once a guy is funny, loyal, generous and career driven ,I’m all in!

The best route to reach me would be through my best friend Joy or my sister Breanna because I’m with them all the time and I usually like to take their advise when it comes to dating!

What quality do you look for in guys you are dating?

This is a tricky question it depends on how I feel about the person. I don’t particularly have a set look, once the guy is funny, loyal, generous and career driven , I’m all in.

On a night out on the town, what can’t you leave home with out?

If I’m going out I never want to leave home without putting on perfume. I think it should be a woman’s business to make sure she smells nice.

Look five years into your future what do you see?

I would love to say that I want to be somewhere deep in Paris being swept away by a French man (lol) but realistically in five years I see myself doing what I love which is working with the elderly and building a home with my future husband and children.
