about

Ayvalık, which is on the connecting road from İzmir to Çanakkale; despite being affiliated to Balıkesir province, it is culturally close to İzmir. The reason for this is the trade and production that developed during the history. In the past, production in the city center, which has transformed Ayvalık into a trading center, has left itself to the idle and unused factory. When we look at historical development, Ayvalık hosted the Academy, which is the first university of the century, which is not only a commercial center but also educational. In addition to these cultural and commercial developments, Ayvalık also has its own architectural language. Houses and factories made of garlic stone found in the region are contributing to the formation of their own language. The fact that the Greek population was intensely located in the area before the conquest was an element that revived the region in terms of both architecture and church architecture. With the Greek people leaving the region, the majority of the churches, which have not been turned around, have remained idle. Ayvalık consists of 22 islands connected to itself. The prevailing wind is the star and Poyraz, the north and the northern eastern ones. The high elevation and slope values allow human and economic activities. It is covered with woodland maki and olive. Olive and olive oil are an important product in the agricultural production of the city.

NEW CITY VISION

According to the model planned in the works of creating vision in the region; DYNAMOs, located in the downtown area of Ayvalık, can be seen as a triangulation, forming a network by communicating with the points called urban magnet in the city. Urban magnet points which are qualified according to the local values of Ayvalık; Industrial, cultural, agricultural and local. Each of the above-mentioned features is regarded as one of the urban magnets. Urban magnets are also values that are unique to the city and make it special, while also disappearing in the city. According to this model, urban magnets aim to bring out the lost values in the city by connecting them with a network, whereas in the case of DYNAMO structures, a shooting point is formed which will be formed by this network system consisting of urban magnets. The district selected for the dynamo and urban magnet model in the district is a region equipped with idle factories and cultural artefacts. The factories will be called dynamo and will be assigned to revive the region, to exhibit the products produced by the production workshops, to evaluate and present them commercially.

The Sabuncugil Square, which is the nearest potential area to the the city square of where the plants in the idle factories and areas are located on the area, will be the dynamo area to be selected in the project. Sabuncugil Factory and its surroundings established with Fabrika Aralığı Sokağı and Cumhuriyet Caddesi increases the potential of this area as the square of the relationship and the place where it is taken. The Sabuncugil square is an area that can be regarded as a parade where the historical touch lost in the city and silhouette relation is opened.

According to the new shoreline model proposed to build the city by the coast; The historic and narrow streets that descend unbroken to the shore through the historic touch extend the shore, strengthening the relationship established by the city with the water. It is aimed to increase the relationship of the sea with the pedestrian in relation to the coast while aiming to make the historical doctrine hidden through the Cumhuriyet Caddesi visible with the Sabuncugil square. The traces referenced from the Sabuncugil Square also extend to the shore.

about

The program of the project addresses the housing problem rising from the current wave of asylum seekers. The location is central Gothenburg. Refugees must from the first day of their arrival contribute to the society according to their abilities. The refugees must be present for the local citizens and should not be hidden away in the remote countryside. We imagine our site to be the parking lot at Medicinareberget. The challenging location on paved wasteland is a critical comment to the city’s current densification projects. In 2015 Sweden received 160.000 refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Relative to its population Swden has received the largest number of all European countries, apart from Turkey. The benefits are in line with the welfare states of northen Europe resulting in 60 billion kr of public spending. The design is informed by the urban context; however, the focus is the spatial design consequent to the program integrated with a material structure consequent to the context. The project has a double emphasis of an empathic spatial design and a detailed material structure: It is an open investigation of the notion of home and memory. The refugees have lost their home. A small artefact in the pocket might be all that the refugee has managed to bring along. A particular photo, a figure, or a tool - the things keep the memory alive of the home left behind. The aim is to build in wood and recyclied materials within a cradle-to-cradle framework.

Forsaker is the former site of the industry Papyru. It is located right next to the new and old city center of Mölndal. The neighboring area has picturesque older buildings, which today are widely used as workshops and galeries. Today Forsaker is abandoned, aside from some collaborations with local artists. Although the river is running through the site as a spine, it is barely used. The site is isolated by the presence of the highway and the topography and our proposal is to break up these physical barriers and reconnect the site with its surroundings. The contact with the river is reinforced in our project, resulting in public and internal building spaces that connect to the water. The flow of people initially was going around the site, but now it is changing towards a flow in the site and along the river, creating a new central node in the old industrial area. Inside the industrial area there are interesting spaces between different volumes with different characteristics which gives a multifaceted urban space. The meaning of our project is to enhance the already existing beauty, heart and soul of the place, taking care of the interesting marks from the historical changes and adding new layers and qualities.

about

It has been determined that the Golden Horn selected as a project area has insufficient cultural, educational, park and social activity functions along the coastal line. It has been deemed appropriate to support this ending with a project based on the concepts of experience and surprise by starting from the findings and analyzes made in the region that is considered as a recreation area. The design of the hotel management and culinary arts academy, where different functions are located in the changing region within the framework of the Golden Horn Cultural Valley project, was deemed appropriate. It is aimed to make the end of the Golden Horn an interesting and lively place worth visiting and experiencing.

The project consists of a “transparent” curvilinear pathway that provides different masses spreading over the area and circulation between these masses. The road is poured between the buildings; it shapes these cubic buildings by passing through them or their tops. The road is a experiement and the main component of the project which sometimes refers to a transit area, sometimes a staircase and sometimes a auditorium. The reason why other buildings are chosen in basic geometric forms is that they want to move and shape through the project. In other words, it is aimed that two opposites come together to create surprise and differentiation. Transportation between the buildings is considered to be a common area on the basement floor in terms of access to the service and the ease of passage of students as well as being on the ground floor and on the road. The material used was the copper ‘corten’ material facade which gave the feeling of rust and industrial function due to the formation of Haliç’s old industrial region and existing factories and chimneys.

The cultural center structure is a two-storey structure consisting of the inner street, which houses two different directions, and the different units clinging to this inner street. The car road was taken under the ground. The roof is designed as a green roof and people can walk on it. The houses are thought to be terraced houses that cling to the main mass. The courtyard, created in the center of the cultural center, was left as a relaxing public space in the middle of the city.
