Eagle Pier Table

American Empire Classical Marble Top Pier table, Circa 1835 -1840. Although strongly influenced by Philadelphia craftsmen of this period, this fabulous piece may have been executed outside of Philadelphia, possibly in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Exceptional carving with gilt and ebonized features. Initials, that appear to read as CD appear in old script, in pencil, on the back of one of the lower carved supports. Roughly 75” in height, 46” in width at center. It is interesting to compare features and style of this pier table to the well known Quervelle label featuring a dressing table with curved dolphin mirror supports. See an example of this label in Philadelphia Empire Furniture, William Boor, 2006, page 69. On an academic note, pollen analysis, a precise indicator of where a piece was made or has travelled was conducted on the pier table by Fred Wiseman in September, 1992, and revealed ‘samples characterized by a generalized pollen flora indicating they come from areas primarily agricultural or otherwise disturbed...contains corn and wheat (wheat, rye, oats, etc.) pollen direct indicators of nearby agriculture at one point in its history. Tree pollen in samples is indicated by the presence of riverine pollen types of willow and cottonwood, upland forest is indicated by oak, maple and white pine. Sample is interesting because most of the pine is the red pine group, that usually indicates an origin south of Philadelphia, where the coastal plain pine forests of loblolly pine and other red pines begin. There is no bald-cypress or bayberry pollen, so a tidewater south origin is improbable. Additionally, there was an absence of pollen from plants such as wormwood, heath, heather, gorse, a distinctive European birch, a northern European plant called dryas and other distinctly European species indicating the piece was neither of European origin or had a European presence at any time.’ Three wood samples from the pier table were analyzed and identified as red pine, cottonwood and spruce ( by analysis, Donna Christianson, US Forest Products Laboratory, March, 1987).

Gothic Dining Chairs

Set of six Gothic/Classical New York side chairs, circa 1845, J.and J.W. Meeks or A.and F. Roux. Chairs of this form are pictured in the famous A.H Ritchie (after Francis B. Carpenter) steel engraving, The First Reading of The Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet, and also in an 1864 sketch by a C.K. Stellwagan of the Cabinet Room, property of the Western Reserve Historical Society. Several of those chairs remain in the Lincoln bedroom of the White House. Although pairs of this type have become available, a set of six is most unusual. The highest style of this form, having serpentine seat fronts and front leg castors. The chairs of this set appear to utilize both mahogany and walnut.

Empire Chair

The refined molding on the seat rail and legs and the outsized arm pads seen here are similar to those on a armchair for the North Carolina State House by John and Thomas Constantine and an armchair by Duncan Phyfe and Sons in the collection of Glorianna H. Gibbon. Reference: Cooper. Classical Taste in America 1800-1840. fig. 186, p. 230; Kenny, Brown, et. al. Duncan Phyfe, Master Cabinet Maker in New York. fig. 125, p. 103.

Eagle Breakfast Table

Reminiscent in form of the “Masterpiece” eagle carved pedestal card table in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, circa 1820 ( pictured and described in The New Fine Points of Furniture: Early American, Albert Sack, 1993). This is certainly one of, if not the most highly developed New York Classical mahogany breakfast or library tables known. Carved eagle heads and full wings support the concave edged base. The top supports are carved cornucopia ending in hairy paw feet. Carved drops hang at the corners and sheaves of wheat adorn the center of the base. Single drawer, original pull. A gaming table by the same maker is pictured in Antiques Magazine, February 1976, opposite the inside cover, in a David Stockwell advertisement. Stockwell attributes their table to H.Lannuier or his successor, John Gruez. One last related example worth mentioning is a card table in the New York State Museum that graces the cover of the publication, New York Furniture, 1788 -1825, by John Scherer, 1988, attributed to Michael Allison based on a nearly identical labeled example.

As with all of our furniture, in ‘as found’ condition. Very nice overall condition. Measures 29 ½ ht x 25 ¼ x 39 5/8
