According to Tony Tyler, director general, IATA, the fact that the Middle East is expected to deliver such strong growth is not surprising, as governments in the region recognise the value of aviation connectivity to drive global trade and development. Etihad Airways has officially transitioned from a single entity airline into a wider global umbrella company, with the recent launch of Etihad Aviation Group. The new configuration will be led by James Hogan as group president and CEO, while a chief operating officer position has been created at Etihad Airways to oversee the day-to-day running of the core airline. A key element in the business is the establishment of Hala Group, which combines the resources of Hala Travel Management, Hala Abu Dhabi destination management, Etihad Holidays, and other major start-up initiatives such as a new global loyalty company. Hala Group was formed to further drive commercial value for Etihad Airways, for Abu Dhabi and for the airline’s equity alliance partners.

Emirates Launches Boston Route Boston became Emirates’ eighth US destination when the airline began nonstop daily flights between Dubai and the American city on March 10. “From the moment we first announced plans to connect Massachusetts to our global network, we have received a strong and positive response from travellers and our business customers, not only in the US, but also in our home market of the UAE, and other major cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East,” said Tim Clark, president, Emirates. The inaugural Boeing 777-200LR service carried passengers from the UAE and 39 other destinations, illustrating the reach of the carrier’s global network.

Oman Air Selects GSA for Turkey Katera Tourism Investment Group has been appointed as Oman Air’s general sales agent (GSA) in Turkey. The deal, which follows the signing of a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines in 2013, means that the group will take responsibility for offline sales in the Turkish market. As Abdulrazaq Alraisi, chief commercial officer, Oman Air, pinpointed the airline hopes to see sales take off in this large and competitive market. “We believe that Oman Air and Katera Tourism’s business relation will assist in excelling the commercial goal and yet will exploit future opportunities in the Turkish market” added Alraisi. Katera Tourism Investment Group’s range of services include working with all types of domestic and international travel organisations, supporting MICE and destination management company activities, and event management.

Air Serbia has revealed that daily flights to Beirut will now begin from June 1. According to a statement from the airline, the delay was due to regulatory requirements and formalities that needed to be completed prior to the commencement of new services. The original announcement was made in August 2013 following the rebranding and renaming of Jat Airways to Air Serbia, which included an enhanced flight network and codesharing with Etihad Airways and airberlin. New destinations publicised at that time were Abu Dhabi, Banja Luka, Beirut, Bucharest, Budapest, Cairo, Kiev, Ljubljana, Prague, Sofia, Varna, and Warsaw.

Germania Halts Flights to Kurdistan Germania has suspended its operations from Germany and Sweden to Northern Iraq until further notice. The decision affects the carrier’s services from Dusseldorf, Munich and Stockholm to Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, and vice versa. In a statement from the airline, Germania cited the unilateral and instant revocation of air traffic rights on these routes by the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) as the main reason behind the decision, stressing that the airline meets all the requirements for the execution of services according to the bilateral agreements between Iraq and Germany, as well as Sweden. Together with German and Swedish authorities, Germania is in talks with ICAA to relaunch the flights at the next possible date.

Astra Airlines Links Athens with Erbil Astra Airlines’ inaugural flight from Athens to Erbil, Iraq is set to depart from Athens International Airport on April 3. Beckoning from Sheikh Zayed Road, Emirates Grand Hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Dubai’s business and commercial district. Here, Tarek Aouini, hotel manager, Emirates Grand Hotel, talks about growing competition and the advantages and disadvantages of being an independent hotel.

Travel Trade Weekly: As the new hotel manager of Emirates Grand Hotel, what are your main priorities at the moment?

Tarek Aouini Hotel manager, Emirates Grand Hotel

Tarek Aouini: My priorities right now include establishing the brand as the preferred hotel for both leisure and corporate travellers, and highlighting our strategic location and its accessibility to the main business hubs and the Dubai metro. It is also a dry hotel with a family-friendly ambiance and atmosphere, making it ideal for families, especially from the region. I also aim to maintain the high quality of services for guests, and strengthen the management team and staff of the hotel. Travel Trade Weekly: What kind of plans do you have in place in order to best utilise the hotel’s location and attract even more business? Tarek Aouini: Our hotel provides great value for money; it is an affordable and convenient accommodation. Right now, we are beefing up our food and beverage portfolio so we can offer more dining options for internal and external guests. We also plan to promote our excellent facilities like the gym and the spa for those who are looking for fitness activities and relaxation after a busy conference, a tiresome day at work, or a full day of sightseeing. We also aim to strengthen our relationship with tour operators and destination management companies, to position the hotel as the preferred accommodation in the heart of Dubai, which provides true Arabian hospitality. Tarek Aouini: The hospitality sector is expected to benefit from Expo 2020; it has a direct correlation – more guests, more rooms. The competition in the market will be tighter and every property will take a part in this by offering better rates and services. tion as the host nation for Expo 2020 is set to significantly enhance the destination’s tourism sector. What are your expectations? How do you think this event will help achieve Dubai’s goal of attracting 20 million visitors by 2020? Tarek Aouini: Dubai has already established its place in the world travel map. International travel blogs and publications have listed Dubai as one of the must-see places on Earth. Being selected as the host for Expo 2020 has further [strengthened] this status. Dubai will expect more attractions for visitors and more hotels in the pipeline. Even the other emirates are adding up on room inventory. There is also a possibility of having a more relaxed visa application for UAE visitors in the years leading to Expo 2020. Travel Trade Weekly: What role will the hotel play in the lead-up to Expo 2020?

Tarek Aouini: We will be participating in the Arabian Travel Market under the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing stand. As mentioned earlier, we aim to strengthen our business ties with the travel trade sector to reinforce our presence in the market. In terms of guest satisfaction, we will make sure that we will provide the best value for money by having regular training of the hotel staff and assessment of the overall work flow. We aim to offer better services in terms of dining and recreation via other, different outlets. Emirates Grand Hotel is an independently-operated hotel, which can be both an advantage and a challenge. The advantage is that it can be more flexible in terms of rates, offerings and services. The challenge is the establishment of the brand and the competition in the market.

T

he Southeast Asian destination welcomed 15.5 million visitors in 2013, up 7.2 percent from 2012 and tourism revenues reached a new high of USD18.7 billion. Although full-year figures are yet to be released, Singapore is predicted to register a record number of arrivals from the Kingdom as 15,052 Saudis travelled to the country in the first three quarters of 2013 alone. “Saudi visitors increasingly come to experience the brilliance of our food, culture, arts, and world-class entertainment from theme parks and museums to Formula 1 Grand Prix, but also for business and school trips,” explained Mohamed Hafez Marican, area director, Middle East and Africa, Singapore Tourism Board.

Abderrafie Zouitene

Morocco is steadily rising in the golf tourism industry, and here Abderrafie Zouitene, CEO, Moroccan National Tourist Office (MNTO), shares his hopes for even better years to come, outlining the authority’s promotional efforts in order to attract additional markets.

Travel Trade Weekly: What percentage of the overall inbound tourism figures that Morocco attracts annually are made up of golf tourism arrivals? Abderrafie Zouitene: Unfortunately, comprehensive golf statistics do not exist at the moment, to the extent that a national body in charge of collecting and processing data about golf does not exist. But there is some overlap amongst basic indicators which lead us to believe that Morocco is welcoming about 90,000 golf tourists each year, representing approximately one percent of overall inbound tourism. This figure is expected to increase significantly in the light of the development of the golf offering in Morocco during the past three years, and also the efforts made in terms of promotion. Besides, and given the development of golf courses in the country, which will reach 40 by 2015/2016, versus 28 presently, we can expect that this figure could at least double or triple for 2020. Travel Trade Weekly: How important is golf travel for the country’s tourism industry and which are the main feeder markets? Abderrafie Zouitene: We believe that the revenues of golf travel may reach MAD1.2 billion (USD144.7 million) per year. As from a global perspective, golfers spend between 50 – 200 percent more per person per day in resorts than general leisure tourists, these revenues show us how important golf travel is for the overall tourist industry. Besides, and as golf tourism in Morocco is a constantly changing industry, this figure shall keep increasing on an ongoing basis, 22 MARCH 2014

thanks to the resilience of our tourist sector to the crisis, particularly with the promising outlook of the global economic recovery. Our main markets in golf travel are France, the UK and Germany; but France takes on the lion’s share as it is also our number one market in terms of leisure tourism arrivals. Secondary markets are Switzerland and Belgium. And we are targeting more and more the Scandinavian market, wellknown for its potential, since new air routes began operations recently.

It was an opportunity to present the Moroccan golf offering and services to some 20 golf tour operators. Indeed, this workshop contributed to creating a favourable business environment through networking sessions and direct meetings between tour operators and Moroccan partners. This event is the first of several promotional actions that Morocco is undertaking in order to position itself as a rising golf destination on the UK market.

Travel Trade Weekly: In the context of promoting Morocco as a golfing destination, MNTO organised a workshop in London in late 2013. What were the outcomes of this event?
