Limassol Port Awaits New Developments
Limassol Port
Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA) has revealed that the second phase of a EUR60 million project will result in Limassol’s port enhancement. Works are estimated to get underway before the end of this year on what is considered to be the main commercial and cruise port of the island, and will involve the construction of a 500m extension to the existing port’s quay on its western basin. According to CPA, the two-stage project has already seen the port deepened to -16m in the western basin and to -17m for the port’s turning circle and entrance channel. The existing quays and parts of the breakwater were strengthened four years ago. The new passenger terminal, which is estimated to be handed for use in 2014, will significantly add value to the cruise and passenger handling character of the port. The new facility of a total of 6,800m2 is set to be fully compliant with European Union safety and security requirements and includes one departure hall, two arrival halls, separate area for luggage handling and receipt, a restaurant on the first floor, and a large parking place as well as offices for providing all needed high quality services to visitors.
Limassol Marina to Attract Middle East Buyers With the first 94 luxury apartments at Nereids Residences of Limassol Marina having already been delivered to its owners, which marked the beginning of the project’s operation, the new spot on Limassol’s map is poised to attract the Middle East market, as Sophia Paraskeva, public relations officer, Limassol Marina, recently revealed. According to Paraskeva, unlike other markets, the interest in the Marina’s product from the Middle East shows a great appeal for both living in Limassol and cruising the Mediterranean Sea. “Middle Eastern yacht ownership accounts for a significant proportion of the super yacht fleet and Middle Eastern owners, or yacht charterers, spend a large amount of their time in the western Mediterranean enjoying traditional European yachting destinations, so the links between these audiences is very strong,” she said. Apartments at Thetis Residences are expected to be delivered this month while the Peninsula Villas is set to be completed by the end of this year. The project in its entirety, including the exclusive Island Villas and Castle Residences, will be unveiled in early 2015.
Larnaca Marina Project Remains on Hold At a recent meeting, Larnaca’s executive development committee reviewed the progress concerning the joint development of the city’s port and marina. As industry campaigners continue to battle against APD, the TripAdvisor survey, of over 1,100 respondents, has shown that the majority of British travellers are against it, with 77 percent citing that APD should be scrapped, while over a quarter of the respondents say that the cost of APD, which includes increasing taxes, will impact their travel plans this year. According to Emma Shaw, spokesperson, TripAdvisor, flights make up a significant part of the cost of a trip and the results of this research reveal that the ever-increasing cost of APD is becoming a real concern for British travellers.
The European Commission recently launched a proposal to improve the planning of maritime activities at sea and the management of coastal areas. The proposal aims at establishing a common European framework for maritime spatial planning and integrated coastal management in EU member states. The long term view is to ensure the growth of maritime and coastal activities and that the use of resources at sea and on coasts remain sustainable. Maria Damanaki, European commissioner, maritime affairs and fisheries, European Commission, said, “We are proposing a new step of the Integrated Maritime Policy of the EU and offering a new tool for our Blue Growth Strategy. By facilitating sustainable development and investments at sea, the Directive will contribute to make real the potential of Europe’s Blue Economy for growth and jobs.” This plan is expected to increase certainty for investors and reduce the administrative burden for national authorities and operators, while preserving ecosystem services. The EU estimates that increased business certainty and reduced administrative burden will lead to economic benefits of up to EUR1.6 billion across the union.
Wizz Air Moves Italy Routes to Rome Ciampino Airport Wizz Air has moved four of its eight Fiumicino Airport, Rome, routes to Rome Ciampino Airport, which include its services to/from Gdansk, Poland, and Cluj Napoca, Timisoara, and Tirgu Mures, Romania. "Wizz Air offers its consumers incredibly low fares and we will continue to work more with airports that offer lower costs. Our Rome routes to Gdansk, Cluj Napoca, Timisoara and Tirgu Mures, carry over 140,000 passengers per year on very low fares. One airport’s loss is another airport’s gain, and after Fiumicino Airport charges have been increased to unreasonable levels, that do nothing to promote tourism and protect jobs, we will now bring this business to Rome Ciampino airport. “While Wizz Air continues to operate four other routes at Fiumincino (to Prague, Sofia, Vilnius and Warsaw) we can confirm that it is mainly airports with the lowest costs that will benefit of Wizz Air’s phenomenal passenger traffic growth,” commented Daniel de Carvalho, corporate communications manager, Wizz Air.

“The Middle East is not [St Raphael Resort’s] main market, however, as all markets are important to us. We do get many travellers from the Middle East, however, many want to come merely for weekend breaks at peak season; a time when we cannot accommodate for short periods due to high demand and full occupancy. It is important for the region to view Cyprus as a destination for longer holidays as well as weekend breaks and also see the great potential in visits to the island throughout the whole 12 months of the year.”

Q & A with Marianna Koutrakou With its modern facilities and well-trained doctors, Cyprus has long established itself as premium destination of choice for the medical tourism, and here Marianna Koutrakou, marketing manager, Yiannikos Centre for Holistic Dentistry, Nicosia, lists a number of reasons that place the island at the forefront of dental segment.
Travel Trade Cyprus: Based on your opinion, why should people come to the island and, specifically, Yiannikos Centre for Holistic Dentistry for dental treatments? Marianna Koutrakou: Cyprus poses as an ideal destination due to the fact of [being bathed in] sunshine most of the year, which positively helps patients of any kind. Moreover, Cyprus hotels and tourism facilities are very high standard and enjoy privileged locations. In order to make Yiannikos patients as comfortable as possible, Yiannikos Centre for Holistic Dentistry communicates fluently in four different languages, including Russian, English, Turkish and Greek, and has all basic reading material, such as certifications, guarantees, post-treatment information, invoices, and patient history translated in the above languages. Marianna Koutrakou: Our centre’s main international markets are the UK and Russia, however, all the necessary procedures are followed in order to reach new markets. We collaborate with travel agents, medical coordinators, and the Ministry of Health. These collaborations are easier to enchase due to the fact that Dr. Anna-Maria Yiannikos [owner and director]is the Cyprus Representative of the World Federation for Laser Dentistry, specialising in the field of dental lasers and cosmetic dentistry, and she is also among the first European dentists awarded with Master in Lasers in Dentistry by the University of Aachen, Germany. Furthermore, she received the Golden Award for her

Travel Trade Cyprus: Currently, Yiannikos Centre for Holistic Dentistry is the only dental clinic in Nicosia that has completed the ISO 9001 Quality of Service and OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety certification procedures. Yiannikos Centre for Holistic Dentistry provides the latest in treatments and uses innovative and up-to-date technology, all certified by international accreditations
Marianna Koutrakou: Our philosophy is to provide a spectrum of dental treatments and prevention based on the highest standards of dental care. The ISO 9001 Quality of Service and OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety certification procedures help us fulfill this idea with all needed precautions and actions. Also, the great advantage of being the first and only clinic in Nicosia with these certifications gives us the opportunity and allows us to claim and conquer the position we deserve in Cyprus dental venues. Our patients here in Cyprus and the Cyprus community know us and come to us for the unique and high standard services and quality treatments we provide across a spectrum of dentistry. These accreditations give the ability to our patients abroad to know us and trust us for the same reasons. Knowing that we have these international accreditations they can feel much more at ease and are able to receive any kind of treatment painlessly with the feeling of total safety.

Tourism Vital to Cyprus Inspite of Crisis
T
Tourism has long been a major force in Cyprus’ socio-economic development and the past months have only reinforced the industry’s vital role in the nation’s overall growth.
hese are the words which were uttered by Manthos Mavrommatis, director, bilateral business associations, Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry, at the recently held Central Europe Investment Forum in Nicosia. “In order to support the industry’s development, it is important to follow an open skies policy. I believe that whoever is willing to fly to Cyprus and bring tourists to the island, should be encouraged,” he further stressed, also remarking on the un-
tapped potential of the education and health sectors, with the island boasting a plethora of health and wellness orientated resorts and spas. As Mavromatis further asserted, in spite of the economic crises, Cyprus will continue to offer promising investment opportunities in various sectors, including energy and gas and real estate with projects such as luxury resorts, holiday houses, golf resorts as well as casinos, further to marinas, thematic parks, educational, and health initiatives.
Central Europe Investment Forum in Nicosia Representatives of both the public and the private sector attended the Central Europe Investment Forum, organised under the theme ‘Secure Amid Crises’ at Hilton Park Nicosia, to learn more about the investment opportunities available in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, also known as the Visegrad Group (V4).
Cypriot Culture on Display in Munich
Gasteig München
On April 12, Gasteig München, the cultural centre in Munich, hosted the opening ceremony of a series of cultural events entitled ‘Cypriot Spring’, which was organised by the cultural office of the embassy of Cyprus, Berlin, and which was held for the eighth consecutive year. The ceremony was attended by 200 guests, including Minas Hadjimichael, ambassador of Cyprus in Germany, who stated that the civilisation of a country, its culture, and natural beauty are some of the few things which are not affected by the economic crisis, and thanked the artists for their active participation.
Promoting Cyprus to Foreign Correspondents In order to promote Cyprus as an attractive tourist destination, Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Tourism, organised a tourist excursion for the foreign correspondents who recently visited Cyprus. The excursion, which was sponsored by CTO and supported by Le Méridien Limassol Spa & Resort, Four Seasons Hotel, and the Amathus Beach
Hotel, Limassol, included visits to seaside hotels in the coastal city, and some cultural interpretation for the archaeological sites of ancient Amathus area. The foreign correspondents had the opportunity to enjoy a short escape and have a taste of the island’s coastal tourist product, be informed about the island’s multi-dimensional tourist experience, communicate with tourists, and experience authentic hospitality.
Maciej Szpuner
Organised by the Polish-Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, the event provided an excellent opportunity to network and build business relationships and further strengthen existing ties between Cyprus and Central Europe. As Maciej Szpuner, deputy minister of foreign affairs, Poland, highlighted in his opening speech, V4 was established in 1991 with the main goal of intensifying cooperation among the member states and encourage communication and partnerships with other countries. Located a mere three hours from Cyprus, V4, which, as a group, ranks among the world’s top 20 economy powers, offers a welcoming and safe business environment, noted Pawel Dobrowolsi, president, V4, adding that the current economic situation should not discourage investment rather encourage the business community to look for new alternatives.

Q & A with Giorgos Bayadas The artificial reefs (AR) project is set to introduce a new dimension in marine environment protection and significantly boost tourism. Here Giorgos Bayadas, fisheries and marine research officer, Marine Environment Division, Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR), talks about the widespread benefits associated with such initiatives.
Travel Trade Cyprus: How would you define the overall goal of the project? Giorgos Bayadas: The overall goal is to enhance fish stocks by protecting the marine environment and marine life. The ARs are also expected to serve other objectives such as diving tourism, snorkelling, awareness raising, environmental education, and scientific work. The projects are scheduled for completion [within this year]. Travel Trade Cyprus: Why do you expect the model to be successful in Cyprus and boost tourism? Giorgos Bayadas: There are many successful stories from several countries, including Mediterranean states which have been taken into account. The degradation of the marine environment, overfishing, and the lack of a satisfactory network of marine-protected areas are some constraints for the island’s sustainable fisheries and alternative tourism. We expect our projects to be successful because there is a strategy and a methodology we have followed and we are still following. Our first step was to prepare a strategy that was especially formulated for the creation of ARs in Cyprus. Then we worked in order to study the technical features of the various types and modules of ARs and the natural characteristics and the marine life of the selected sites. We also believe that we achieved the best possible consensus among the various stakeholders. We have held a number of meetings and exchanged views with various stakeholders like the local municipal authorities, professional fishermen, the Cyprus Dive Centre Association, Cyprus Tourism Organisation, and other governmental and non-governmental bodies. I would like to make particular reference to the model of management regime for each one of the protected areas that we will try to apply: each area shall have its management body (MB). The MB will be in charge of preparing and implementing a management plan and specific regulations for inspection, patrol, public awareness, diving, snorkelling, and for all permitted activities within the marine-protected area. Travel Trade Cyprus: Which areas have been selected?
JUNE 2013
Giorgos Bayadas: The areas which have been selected are located in the areas of Dasoudi - Limassol, Protaras - Paralimni, Agia Napa, and Paphos. Their exact location can be found on the maps presented in our website. I would like to mention that the first designated marine-protected area, where ARs were deployed, is located in Amathounta in Limassol.
Giorgos Bayadas Fisheries and marine research officer, Marine Environment Division, DFMR
Our strategy defines what ARs are; it sets overall goals and objectives; indicates the geographic areas of the ARs; sets physical criteria such as depths, exposure, and protection to weather conditions accessibility, just to mention a few; and describes a proposed model of management regime. The flow of tourism and visitors, in general, is a factor that we have seriously considered. Our intention is to raise awareness among stakeholders and encourage other potential interested organisations to take advantage of the ARs. We would like the artificial reef areas to have as many visitors as possible and to be economically self dependent.
the European Union and 50 percent by the Cyprus Government. A significant amount of money, in order to purchase four fishing vessels that will be used as part of the ARs, was provided by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Cyprus Dive Centre Association, and local municipal authorities. Travel Trade Cyprus: What do you expect these organisations’ contribution to be? Giorgos Bayadas: The Department of Fisheries and Martine Research is collaborating with local municipal authorities, professional fishermen, the Cyprus Dive Centre Association, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, coast guards, the Department of Antiquities, the University of Cyprus, the Department of Environment, the Cyprus Ports Authority, the Department of Merchant Shipping, sailing and nautical clubs, as well as non-governmental organisations. These organisations are representing state and social ‘partners’ and have their own field of expertise, responsibility, and network, and they can contribute to a successful and effectively managed AR area. Travel Trade Cyprus: According to the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the creation of the marine parks is set to stimulate the island’s tourism industry in many ways. Based on your opinion, how will these projects benefit the Cypriot tourism industry as a whole? Giorgos Bayadas: I believe that the Cyprus tourism industry as a whole will definitely benefit from the creation of new diving sites. It is known that divers spend a considerably higher amount of money for that specific activity than a regular visitor is spending in Cyprus. Consequently, a longer period of holiday will have a direct benefit for the island’s economy, [including sectors such as] transportation, accommodation, food, and entertainment.
Travel Trade Cyprus: What is the estimated cost of the project? Where is the funding coming from?
Travel Trade Cyprus: What kind of promotional activities are you planning in order to attract international divers and visitors to these unique projects?
Giorgos Bayadas: The total cost of the five projects is around EUR1.2 million. The bulk of funding comes from the Operational Programme for Fisheries for the Period 2007-2013 [with] 50 percent contribution by
Giorgos Bayadas: Our projects are still in progress. We know that there is a high interest by organised groups, especially divers, tour operators, and the tourism industry, in general.
