Urbanization & Crime Crime has always been an issue for the city of Chicago but has recently spiked and without a solution to gang violence. Resolving the city’s crime problem is not a simple task, and the deteriorating relationship between communities and police is an issue. The spatial experiment of a community centered police station addresses the pressing problems of crime. Jeanne Gang said, “If you can remake space, you can change a culture.” This proposal is a continuation of her “Polis Station” on Ogden Avenue. The proposed site is at the Shakespeare police station with similar crime rates. The plan spreads over the two blocks between the police station and Palmer S quare Park. The park attaches itself to a continuous boulevard leading to the 606 and other green spaces as far south as Garfield B oulevard. Currently, the block for the proposed building hosts a variety of worn down housings units. Providing a safe, shared, recreational space on police property, this project will support a new relationship between police officers and neighbors becoming a site of social connection and an opportunity to interact in non-enforcement situations. The precast concrete building allows free movement through the structure and to site adjacencies along the connecting brick path. The chemically tempered glass section provides a view into the inviting atmosphere. The intention of this design is to help the Logan S quare neighborhood reimagine their police station as a beneficial neighborhood asset that could lead to future investments within their new tightknit community.
