International International AS CIVILIAN KILLINGS RISE, AFRICAN LEADERS CRACK DOWN ON THE PRESS (GIN)––Retaliating against media reports of civilian deaths at the hands of the Malian Armed Forces, authorities there have ordered French public broadcasters RFI and its sister TV station France 24 off the air. News reports of military abuses were without merit, the ruling junta charged. They dismissed a report by RFI about summary executions and looting by Malian soldiers and the Russian security personnel now accompanying them on their operations against terrorists in Mali. The abuses had been documented in a report by the NGO Human Rights Watch and by the head of the United Nations rights commission Michelle Bachelet and rights group Human Rights Watch. Limits on press freedom are ever more widespread on the continent. In Uganda, two journalists are being held since a raid on their office on March 10 on charges of “cyber-stalking“ President Yoweri Museveni and for “offensive communication.” Seven colleagues were also arrested in the same raid but have since been released. The detained journalists are Norman Tumuhimbise, executive director of Alternative Digitalk TV, an online TV channel critical of the government; and Farida Bikobere, a presenter. A court has ordered them
detained provisionally in Luzira high security prison in Kampala until March 21, when a bail application is to be considered. The two were accused of publicizing new books by Tumuhimbise, scheduled for release March 30, that take a critical look at Museveni’s policies since he became president in 1986. “Write a book critical of the president, and you’re treated like a suspected terrorist,” said Arnaud Froger, the head of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Africa desk. “The prolonged detention of these two journalists, who are still in prison, is as serious as it is unjustified. We call for the charges to be dropped and for their immediate release.” As the world prepares to celebrate World Press Freedom Day on May 3, where does the continent stand? “In almost half of the continent, the press freedom situation remains worrying; information is often blocked; either partially or completely. There are restrictions to prevent journalists from doing their job properly and in the worst cases journalists are intimidated, assaulted, sometimes arbitrarily arrested,

or even killed,” Froger said. More than thirty reporters have lost their lives in Africa in the last five years. In the DRC, Nigeria and Somalia more than a hundred cases of abuse against journalists are reported every year. Among the best-performing countries in Africa were Namibia and Ghana. The Seychelles and Burundi are also progressing in the right direction, said RSF.
The NY-based Committee to Protect Journalists names Angola, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, and Sierra Leone for repressing press freedom. An abduction in South Sudan and an attack on journalist Franklin Doloquee during a live broadcast in Liberia have also been cited. And in the recent Freedom in the World 2022 Report, authorities in Eswatini and Zimbabwe are “strangling the media,” according to The Media Institute of Southern Africa. “One of the global objectives that Africa could set for itself,” said RSF Froger, “is to ensure that it is no longer permitted to imprison journalists simply for alleged press offenses.” MONTH-LONG POWER BLACKOUT CRIPPLES NIGERIAN ECONOMY (GIN)––A month-long power blackout on top of a major fuel shortage has paralyzed Nigeria’s economy while raising questions about the country’s self-sufficiency in a resource it produces. Nigeria is the sixth crude oil producer in the world, with a significant chunk of gas reserves, yet it has been struggling to provide sufficient and affordable energy to citizens for the past two decades. The situation has extended to the aviation sector, as jet fuel has also become scarce, forcing airlines to cut flights or increase ticket prices. Meanwhile See INTERNATIONAL on page 27
Relief for Ukraine is gearing up on local and international levels By ASAR JOHN Special to the AmNews Support for Ukrainian refugees is witnessed throughout New York City, from signs of solidarity to monetary means and several relief efforts. Humanitarian groups such as Tour for Tolerance, Council of Peoples’ Organization (COPO) and many others are teaming up to bring support to Ukrainians in need. The collaboration between these groups will bring donation supplies to Ukraine via the Poland border, with items ranging from walkers to grooming products and diapers. The donation items are collected by
the organizations and stored at COPO’s headquarters on Coney Island Ave. in Brooklyn. At some point this week, COPO plans to ship hundreds of packages by air and sea to reach the relief organizations in Poland that are assisting Ukrainian refugees. “We are trying to get as much as we can and as quick as we can,” said Mohammed Razvi, the CEO of COPO. “There’s a whole group of organizations helping out, including synagogues that are in touch with us.” Razvi has the COPO office acting as a warehouse space to store donation supplies and described the plethora of donated goods coming through.
“I have basically two trailers worth of goods in the back,” said Razvi, who had to fill a large portion of the items in the backyard of the property. Bill Tingling, the founder and CEO of Tour for Tolerance, spoke to the Amsterdam News about the efforts to assist Ukrainians. “The collaborative efforts, though we are working together as one, is really wonderful seeing all of these New Yorkers are getting together, working on behalf of people in Ukraine,” said Tingling, who also serves as the Goodwill Ambassador to Ukraine. Last October, Tingling held a “tolerance mission” in Ukraine
to show his support for the construction of a Holocaust Museum at a local park in the city of Odessa. He describes this mission as somewhat humbling, standing where Holocaust victims stood during the Second World War. “Gathering all these supplies and what’s needed—it is my job, it is my merit and it’s the right thing to do,” said Tingling. “I am now an instrument, a person putting something together for people who are bereaved.” The Holocaust Remembrance Association is another group that teamed up with COPO and Tour for Tolerance. The special election wrapped this Tuesday, March 22, with new State Assemblymember-elect Brian Cunningham in the 43rd District. The district covers parts of Crown Heights, Flatbush, East Flatbush, and Prospect Lefferts Gardens in Brooklyn, and is primarily made up of Black, Caribbean, and Jewish communities. As the polls closed, a gaggle of supporters, rabbis, district leaders, young canvassers, old Democrats, community leaders, and at least one Republican gathered at the atmospheric Lips Cafe at 1412 Nostrand Ave. in Brooklyn. MetroBriefs Metro Briefs PUBLIC ADVOCATE RELEASES EDUCATION EQUITY REPORT Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams released a new report outlining key priorities for equitable investment in and renewal of the city’s school system as the city works to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper, “Invest in Education,” explores how New York City public schools can better support and empower young people across the city. It comes two years after city school buildings closed in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and as the city and state now remove some COVID precautions from schools. The report outlines several key priorities for improving accessibility and equity across the system, highlighting a series of areas in need of attention and investment. Among them are ensuring the health and safety of students in the classroom amidst the past two years of trauma, creating healing-centered educational environments where all types of students can thrive, developing offices and programs to better serve the most vulnerable students, and expanding and implementing extracurricular initiatives that complement classroom learning. AG JAMES HOLDS CAMPAIGN RALLY TO ADDRESS CHILD CARE CRISIS New York Attorney General Letitia James held a rally Sunday to address the growing child care crisis and highlighted families who have suffered from disinvestments in the child care system. She was joined by supporters in city and state elected offices as well as working families and child care providers. Currently, the Senate and the Assembly have put forth landmark language in their one house budget resolution that includes expanding universal Pre-K statewide, expands subsidy eligibility to undocumented New Yorkers (up to 500% of the poverty line) and eliminates the work requirement. As a City Council member, she restored child care vouchers and kept the lights on in neighborhood centers. During her tenure as public advocate, she launched a program giving city workers low-cost child care at work. And recently in her role as attorney general she fought to stop the Trump administration from slashing benefits for families. LAURIE CUMBO APPOINTED AS DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS COMMISSIONER Mayor Eric Adams appointed former City Council Member Laurie Cumbo as commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA). Cumbo will direct cultural policy for the city and oversee city funding for hundreds of nonprofit arts and cultural organizations across the five boroughs that deliver quality arts programming for New Yorkers. Additionally, she will advise on strategies for equitably supporting and strengthening the city’s diverse cultural community, which is essential to New York’s status as a global capital leader and makes major contributions to the city’s economic vitality and social well-being. DCLA represents and serves nonprofit cultural organizations involved in the visual, literary, and performing arts; public-oriented science and humanities institutions including zoos, botanical gardens, and historical and preservation societies; and creative artists at all skill levels who live and work within the city’s five boroughs. The agency provides hundreds of millions of dollars in expense and capital funding to more than 1,000 cultural nonprofits each year. Additionally, the agency commissions permanent public artwork and provides free materials to public schools, nonprofits, and city agencies with arts programming. LISC’S BLACK ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FUND INVESTS $122 MILLION TO SUPPORT GROWTH OF BLACK-OWNED BANKS, BUSINESSES The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) announced today that its Black Economic Development Fund (BEDF) has committed nearly half its capital, having closed on $122 million in investments for Black-owned banks and businesses throughout the country. The $250 million fund includes investments from Netflix, Paypal, Square, HubSpot, Aflac, Costco, Dicks Sporting Goods, ThermoFisher Scientific, Wayfair, McKinsey & Company, and Dupont. It aligns with LISC’s larger Project 10X strategy to break down systemic racial barriers, including $1 billion in investments that support small businesses, community nonprofits, mission-driven lenders, anchor institutions, and innovative urban and rural initiatives. The BEDF is designed to respond to unique financing challenges facing Black enterprises, which have historically had more limited access to capital than white-owned businesses. To date, the fund has provided financing for real estate developers, high-impact community development projects and mission-driven lenders in 15 cities. —Compiled by Cyril Josh Barker

Rep. Watson Coleman, U.S. Sen. Booker celebrate House passage of the CROWN Act
House Democratic Caucus Chairman and U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries was joined by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, other congress members, and the local labor groups for a conference on investing in the nation’s infrastructure on Monday, March 14 at Brooklyn Bridge Park. “For decades in Washington, D.C. it seemed like there was infrastructure week every other week,” said Jeffries from the waterfront. “Nothing ever got done.” House Democrats worked alongside President Joe Biden in passing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021, said Jeffries’ office. The bill provides $550 billion in new spending to fix crumbling bridges, roads, tunnels, airports and mass transit systems. “With the effects of the pandemic on the construction industry, it is now more important than ever before to invest in our infrastructure improvements in our country and provide good paying union jobs,” said New York City District Council of Carpenters Representative Gerry Mathews. Over the next five years, New York will receive $11.6 billion for highways, $1.9 billion for bridge replacement, $9.8 billion for public transit across the state, and $685 million for airport upgrades, said Jeffries’ office. “We have not been deterred,” said U.S. Rep Yvette D. Clarke. “We continued to press forward for the people of our city and only months
ago did the House pass the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act with unprecedented commitment to rebuild our communities and help all Americans. These changes, new transformative resources will be brought into Brooklyn where working class communities of color, immigrant families have long been subjected to marginalization and neglect.” Clarke highlighted that universal broadband was especially overdue for many communities. On the issue of broadband, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi added that it was central to workforce stability and development. “It’s about the quality of life, our quality of infrastructure,” said Pelosi. “It’s also about the quality of our fairness and environmental justice.” The infrastructure investment will also help tackle the climate crisis, with $2.6 billion to improve water infrastructure across the state, climate resiliency, access to clean drinking water, toxic pollution cleanups, and electric school buses, said U.S. Rep Nydia Velázquez. “We saw the problems that were created during Hurricane Sandy. We recognized back then that climate change was here and here to stay,” said Velázquez. Ariama C. By CYRIL JOSH BARKER Amsterdam News Staff New Jersey Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman reintroduced the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act in March 2021. Last week, the House of Representatives passed the bill prohibiting discrimination based on a person’s hair texture or hairstyle if that style or texture is commonly associated with a particular race or national origin. The CROWN Act prohibits discrimination against those participating in federally assisted programs, housing programs, public accommodations, and employment. Similar bills have already passed in 15 states and 30 cities. The CROWN Act was cosponsored by a bipartisan group of 116 Representatives. A companion bill is sponsored in the Senate by New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker. “Natural Black hair is often deemed ‘unprofessional’ simply because it does not conform to white beauty standards,” said Watson Coleman. “Discrimination against Black hair is discrimination against Black people. I’m proud to have played a part to ensure that we end discrimination against people for how their hair grows out of their head.” Although existing federal law prohibits some forms of hair discrimination as a type of racial or national origin discrimination, some federal courts have narrowly construed those protections in a way that permits schools, workplaces, and federally funded institutions to promote anti-Blackness and discriminate
against people of African descent who wear certain types of natural or protective hairstyles. The CROWN Act makes it clear that discrimination based on natural and protective hairstyles associated with people of African descent, including hair that is tightly coiled or tightly curled, locs, cornrows, twists, braids, Bantu knots, and Afros, is a prohibited form of racial or national origin discrimination. “I applaud House Republicans and Democrats joining together today and passing legislation that will allow individuals, especially within the Black community, to wear their hair proudly without fear or prejudice,” said Booker. “In this country, implicit and explicit biases against natural hair are deeply ingrained in workplace norms and society at large and continue the legacy of dehumanizing Black people.” Pervasive discrimination against natural hair remains a significant barrier to the professional advancement of people of color, especially Black women. A study found that Black women are 50% more likely to be sent home from the workplace because of their hair, and 80% of Black women feel the need to change their hair from its natural state to fit in at the office. The same study found that Black women’s hair is three times more likely to be perceived as unprofessional. Last June, Oregon became the 14th state to pass a law banning hair discrimination, joining a group that includes New Jersey, California, and Nebraska. Versions of the CROWN Act are currently being considered in dozens of other states.

Janai Norman is not just another face on the TV screen By M’NIYAH LYNN Special to the AmNews Janai Norman knew from a young age that she would be on television. As a journalist, correspondent and co-anchor for ABC, she is constantly in the spotlight with millions of people watching. Although being in the spotlight has its challenges, Norman uses the platform she is provided to establish connections with viewers. Getting to where she is hasn’t been easy, but Norman has proven that as a Black woman in the media, it’s possible to achieve a dream with hard work. In a day, the tasks and responsibilities that Norman faces require a lot of energy, time and attention. She’s used to getting up before her family, possibly doing multiple driving trips into the city and running errands while still doing a full workday. Norman is a working mom and wife, in addition to her job. She said she feels she can’t successfully achieve a work-life balance because her job isn’t typical. Even though she is there for her family as much as she
can be, she knows that she can still miss special moments. “There’s a lot of self-imposed mom guilt. It feels like I’m missing out on things like oh my gosh, when I get back my daughter’s going to be an inch taller and she’s going to be saying five more words,” she said. Though Norman has a lot on her plate, Norman chooses to make sacrifices and find the rewarding aspects of the work she does. She said that by demonstrating to her loved ones that she is going after her dreams, she hopes to inspire her family to follow their passions as well. Norman enjoyed writing when she was young. In her sophomore year of high school, the early stages of her journalism career consisted of taking a journalism class that exposed her to basic reporting. She was so interested that she became editor-in-chief of her school newspaper in her junior and senior years, in which she wrote about whatever interested her in a monthly column. Norman’s passion for journalism and news strengthened. She attended the University of Missouri, which she said had one of
the best journalism programs. There, she yearned for the opportunity to do a summer internship in New York City with ABC, as she dreamed in high school. “I applied to a million different internships and I didn’t hear back from like 98% of them,” she said. However, Norman scored a job as a production assistant at local ABC-affiliate KMIZ for the morning show. Norman quickly got accustomed to doing early shifts before going to classes. She recalls making many sacrifices. After all her efforts, Norman achieved her dream. She got a life-changing call in the middle of one of her classes to come to New York and intern for NewsOne at ABC during the summer. Doing this internship helped solidify that ABC was for her. “I ran out of class. I was so excited that I called my mom crying,” she said. On the other hand, this internship didn’t work out the way Norman had hoped. She ended up “hating it,” but her experience further defined her career aspirations. She wanted to be in front of the camera rather than behind the scenes.

“People are usually caught off guard by that, but the good thing is I learned what I didn’t want, which is a lot of the time just as important as what you want,” she said. As Norman figured out the types of media roles she wanted to look into, she approached this by deciding to go into local news. Often transferring from one location to the next, trying to take her reporting to the next level, Norman worked in Oklahoma and Florida. Unexpectedly, Norman grew unhappy while working in Florida and wanted to leave. She met her husband on Tinder and moved to Washington D.C. to live with him. While she had no job at first, she quickly transitioned into a multi-platform reporter for ABC, despite the fact that she didn’t prefer covering politics. Since then, Norman has moved to NYC. Norman chose not to give up when things didn’t go as planned. Instead of quitting or settling for a journalism gig that didn’t make her happy, she has a history of choosing to not compromise her passion for practi-

Judge Jackson, cool, calm and collected By HERB BOYD Special to the AmNews A relentless grilling from GOP members of the Senate Judiciary Committee was anticipated by Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, and she withstood it exuding a relative calm, complete poise, and keeping to her plan not to voice any personal opinion or answer hypotheticals. She was as unshakable as Senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz were determined in Tuesday’s round of questioning President Biden’s nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat occupied by retiring Justice Stephen Breyer. This is the fourth time Judge Jackson has faced the judiciary committee, each time holding her own and getting the confirmations. This time it’s for higher stakes as she seeks to become the first African American woman on SCOTUS. Graham devoted much of his
time on her as a public defender, especially her clients in custody at Guantanamo Bay accused of being terrorists and participating in the 9/11. Graham in his badgering was implying that she was sympathetic to the (AP Photo Jacquelyn Martin) “criminals” as he called them. All of the Jeffries controversy notwithstanding, the Anti-Defamation League, which took exception to Jeffries’ statements in the past, endorsed Judge Jackson’s nomination, citing that it will “bring an important new perspective to the work of the court.” Sen. Cruz would probably not agree with that and during his quizzing of her leaped on the troubling issue of critical race theory. He began by asking her definition of the theory that essentially posits the centrality of white privilege in American society and aligns with white supremacy. Jackson said it was “an academic theory that is about the ways in which race interacts with various institutions, it doesn’t come up in my work as a judge. “It’s never something that I’ve
studied or relied on and it wouldn’t be something I would rely on if I were on the Supreme Court,” she added. Cruz continued to press the issue, and Jackson, in response to his question if the U.S. was inherently a racist society, said that she didn’t believe that American society was irredeemably racist. Cruz invoked another African American, the scholar and author Ibram X. Kendi, hoisting his book “Antiracist Baby” in the air and declaring it was used at Georgetown Day School in D.C. where Jackson is a board member. “Do you agree with this book?” he asked. “Senator, I do not believe that any child should be made to feel as though they are racist or that they are not valued, or though they are less than or that they are victims or oppressors,” she said. “I don’t believe in any of that.” Round three on Wednesday, and possibly more battering.

It was launched by 1997, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The project aimed to challenge corporate America’s biases on building Black wealth, and end the trade deficit with minority vendors and consumers. It worked to ensure that equal opportunities for people of color and culturally diverse employees, businesses, entrepreneurs, and consumers were always at the forefront of its mission. The morning events focused on labor and mission-driven diversity broker deals that could build financial equity opportunities for Black and Brown investors. In the afternoon there was a luncheon with distinguished speakers and guests, and the event capped with a Hip Hop at 50 panel on the evolution of the Black music genre over the last several decades. The second day consisted of all virtual sessions on topics such as attracting foreign investments during the COVID-19 pandemic and the business of sports.

Go With The Flo Although the upcoming Grammy Awards, which will take place April 3 ANTHONY in Las Vegas, have yet to confirm that Kanye West was set to perform at the ceremony, Kanye’s rep told E! News that a report on March 18 from The Blast was correct when it quoted sources close to Kanye saying that the “Donda” rapper’s team received a phone call that evening informing him he has been pulled from the lineup of performers for the Grammys. According to the website, insiders say the show is “unfortunately” taking this position “due to what they deem to be concerning online behavior.” The Blast also reported that the decision was also made partially because Trevor Noah is hosting the ceremony and there was concern about the men’s interaction during the show. West is nominated for five Grammys this year, including for Album, for “Montero,” Rap Album, for “Donda,” Rap Song for “Jail” and Melodic Rap Performance for “Hurricane.”

APOLLO TO HOST LYRICIST LOUNGE 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Nothing clears the mind like a road excursion in excess of 10 hours. That’s where I found myself a few times in recent weeks. Most times in those moments of reflection we have the fondest of memories. Especially if your playlist is on-point. Traffic in the Woodrow Wilson Bridge area had reached the bumper-tobumper level and allowed for a moment to grab one of the unmarked CDs I roll with and with those joints blaring, a whole new journey had begun. Joint after joint after joint of that East Coast, West Coast worldwide, Boom Bap, original rap!! Imagine just how diverse, creative and impactful that golden era of hip hop really was. One of the most distinguishable aspects of that era was the ability to hear the drop-off of skill level. While wackness was able to creep in, for the most part with crews like Native Tongues, Juice Crew, BDP, the Hit Squad, an assembly line of bangers would stay hitting the streets. Somehow the tide turned so drastically that a rapper that could actually RAP (content, wordplay, flow) became such an anomaly that a call to bring back real hip hop crept into the lexicon and has never left. In the early ’90s a pair of staunch hip hop heads, regular dudes, Danny Castro and Anthony Marshall, put together a series of showcases in an apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to help feed that segment of purist, determined to uphold the standards of dopeness that was established and for the growth of the culture help exceed. That gesture was identified as the Lyricist Lounge and that showcase grew into a brand through which hip hop practitioners (emcees, dj’s and graffiti artists) could reach a worldwide audience through various outlets. Aside from the multitude
of open mic events, it evolved into concerts, albums and documentary films. MTV developed a sketch comedy series, “The Lyricist Lounge Show,” that propelled underground acts Wordsworth, BabeePower, and Master Fuol into the limelight and was an early stomping ground for a young actress/ comedienne Tracee Ellis Ross. Over the course of the 30-plus years of its existence some of the names that have been featured were A listers, big-name talent: Dave Chappelle, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Eminem, Notorious B.I.G., Sean “Diddy” Combs, The Black-Eyed Peas, The Roots, Tracy Morgan, Cee Lo and Common. It’s only fitting that Lyricist Lounge will celebrate the 30-plus year anniversary of its iconic brand with an event at the legendary Apollo Theater on April 16, 2022. Adhering to the reputation of curating authentic, high-quality hip hop talent, the Lyricist Lounge 30th Anniversary Celebration presents the lineup of DJ Kid Capri, Bahamadia, Grand Puba, Mr. Cheeks, Buckshot, CL Smooth, Cru. Large Professor, Rah Digga and Talib Kweli. Top billing goes to the emcee referred to by Rolling Stone as the “conscience of hip hop,” “the greatest live cee ever” by The Source magazine, and “the spokesperson for hip hop” by the Wall Street Journal is the Blast Master KRS One. Those are just the names that have been announced. Anything can happen with that level of history and talent in the room! Over and out. Holla next week, til then, enjoy the nightlife. Also just got word that the date of The Spring Benefit, the Apollo’s signature fundraiser, has been announced for June 13, 2022, and Tyler Perry will be honored with the Impact Award. More on that later. I’m gone.

Union Matters
Frontline workers reflect on two Thank you! Marie, Pat, Bernice, Corinthians, Hazel, Sonia and you years of COVID Gregory Floyd President, Teamsters Local 237 and Vice President at-Large on the General Board of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters
Across the nation, throughout the month of March, there will be various celebrations to mark the accomplishments of women in America. Due to COVID-19, some of those celebrations may be scaled back or done by means other than in-person events, but, nonetheless, the spirit and sentiment expressed will not be diminished. Local 237 also has a tradition of recognizing the contributions of women in our society, especially among our own members. Our last, pre-COVID event was extra-special because we paid tribute to a woman known by the world, who was also one of our own. Marie Colvin. Marie Colvin was a war correspondent. She wrote about innocent women and children caught in the crossfire of civil war. Her bravery was legendary. A movie, “A Private War,” told the reallife story of Marie Colvin, portrayed by Rosamund Pike, that depicted her life behind enemy lines covering stories of human suffering that many did not want told, in dangerous locations, where few would dare to go. It was actually a sentence in one of the movie’s reviews that caused us to wonder about a possible link to Teamsters Local 237. Our research paid off because we discovered that fresh out of college, she was hired by Local 237 to write our newsletter. Marie Colvin was a Teamster! Her family told us that she wore our lapel pin proudly. One could easily imagine her today, condemning the bombing of a children’s hospital in Ukraine—if she were still alive. Marie’s journalistic diligence caused her to lose her eye at the hands of Sri Lankan terrorists in 2001, then her life, at age 56 in 2012, killed by a senior Syrian military officer to silence her. And as proud as we are of Marie, there are several other Teamster women who have done remarkable things on different battlegrounds. For example: in March of 2010, Local 237 sued New York City on behalf of our 5,000 School Safety Agents, 70% of whom were women, mostly African Americans and Latinas. Many were single mothers. Their annual salary was about $7,000 less than their counterparts, with
similar titles, working in other city agencies. Most of them were male. Some called this just a coincidence. I called it discrimination! School Safety Agents have a tough job to do. They help to protect other peoples’ children. All they wanted was to put bread on the table for their own children. So I called a meeting of School Safety Agents to tell them about my plan to sue the city. I told them that we needed some volunteers to sign the papers and be the official plaintiffs. Of the 25 women in the room, 22 left. But three remained: Patricia Williams, Bernice Christopher and the late Corinthians Andrews. And for four years, these three gave testimony after testimony. They refused any settlement that did not include retirees. They took days off from work. They took time away from being with their families. They came to our many rallies. And at those rallies, we felt pretty much alone. Yes, we did have support from several elected officials, but our constant allies who were always there for us boiled down to two people: Hazel Dukes, president of the NYS NAACP and Sonia Ossorio, president of the NYC Chapter of NOW. I remember the day of the judge’s final ruling. Pat, Bernice and Corinthians came into the courthouse and knelt in prayer before they took their seats. Perhaps there was a little divine intervention, but with the help of Hazel and Sonia, a historic settlement was reached. Clearly, throughout our nation, for Women’s History Month, there is no shortage of extraordinary, trailblazing women to honor for their contributions and personal sacrifices that resulted in life-changing conditions benefitting all of us. Throughout the pandemic as well as the most recent effort to diminish the role of School Safety Agents in our public schools, so many of our women members were an integral part of our union’s overall efforts to keep the city functioning and schools safe. For us, it is not difficult to identify women who should be honored during Women’s History Month. We are especially blessed to have among our own members, and our friends, women who care about others and want everyone else to care too. That’s who they are. That’s their legacy. And we take pride in knowing them. Thank you, Marie, Pat, Bernice, Corinthians, Hazel, Sonia and so many others who are the personification of our better angels.

Opinion John McWhorter wants to modify the genetic code of Blacks. Textbook Naziism?* By ISHMAEL REED John McWhorter is like the leader of a road band that plays the same tune every night. He advocated “ racial profiling” in Feb. 2004 in Commentary magazine which at the time was edited by John Podhoretz. This article in which a number of Blacks were barked at was McWhorter’s coming out party after far-right money brought him from his job as an obscure linguistics professor teaching at U.C.Berkeley to Manhattan to be a spokesman for the Manhattan Institute, whose purpose seems to be that of arranging cocktail parties where second and third generation ethnics,
Italians, Jews, and Irish Americans can mingle with Anglos. The Manhattan-Anglo old money establishment is traditionally anti-Semitic, anti-Irish—and anti-Italian judging from the writings of Louis Auchincloss, Henry James, and others—but that doesn’t discourage the Anglo-wannabes who spend the rest of their time creating programs like Stop and Frisk, which was declared unconstitutional by Judge Shira A. Scheindlin after it led to thousands of Black and Brown men and some women being stopped and harassed. The women complained that they were fondled inappropriately by some members of the notorious
Judge Jackson: Unbroken, unbowed, and unshakable EDITORIAL
It was such a pleasure to see Judge Jackson maintain her poise, decorum, and equilibrium while taking bouts of interrogation from GOP members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The grilling, like her candidacy as the first Black woman nominated for the Supreme Court, was unprecedented. They did all they could to unsettle her, break through her calm and serenity, and establish control as they appealed to the Republican base. But to no avail; however, there is still more barrage to come in the final round from the other GOP members, with two of their top dogs, Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz, having exhausted their futile attacks. While it would be good to see a couple of GOP votes for Judge Jackson during this confirmation process, she has the votes if the Dems keep their numbers intact.
Going into the fray, Judge Jackson knew she would have to endure a fury of assaults, misinformation, and a mountain of assertions about her decisions in the lower courts, and as a public defender. Her philosophy would also be assailed, and she repeatedly replied that her only tenet was one of methodology. She was articulate and coherent in turning back the false claims, explaining the complexities of critical race theory, her membership in the Black Students Association at Harvard that invited Dr. Leonard Jeffries to speak, as well as being soft on crime in her juridical decisions. In tennis, we would say she held serve, in football she kicked the winning field goal, and in baseball hit a game-winning home run. But at the hearings on Capitol Hill her presence was commanding and there can be no verdict short of overwhelming confirmation.

NYPD who, in the last century cooperated with slave catchers. The Manhattan Institute’s other quack theory was Broken Windows. Northeastern University researchers explained and debunked that theory. More than 35 years ago, researchers theorized that graffiti, abandoned buildings, panhandling, and other signs of disorder in neighborhoods create an environment that leads people to commit more crime. In the ‘broken windows theory,’ as it has come to be known, such characteristics convey the message that these places aren’t monitored and crime will go unpunished. The theory has led police to crack down on minor crimes with the idea that this will prevent more serious crimes, and inspired research on how disorder affects people’s health. Now, Northeastern researchers say they have debunked the “broken windows theory.” In research published in the Annual Review of Criminology and in Social Science & Medicine, they have found that disorder in a neighborhood doesn’t cause people to break the law, commit more crimes, have a lower opinion of their neighborhoods, or participate in dangerous or unhealthy behavior. Wouldn’t tobacco executives lying about smoking leading to cancer deaths be a serious crime? Or oil giants lying about the effects of their carbon emissions on climate change? Not according to the Manhattan Institute. They are funded by Big Oil and Big Tobacco. When their house newspaper The City Journal referred to me as an “old-timer,” because I criticized “Hamilton,” a musical that glorifies slaveholders, my answer was that maybe if they hadn’t accepted tobacco money some of their subscribers would have lived as long as I have. In the 2004 Commentary article, like a rookie guarding LeBron, McWhorter attacked his elders, Manning Marable, Maxine Waters, and me. He was angry with me because when a U.C.Berkeley campus newspaper, The Daily Californian, asked me to comment on his blame-the-victim book “Losing The Race” I said I’d read it twice in five minutes because it was a retread of Shelby Steele’s work. Shelby Steele is a better writer. In the book, McWhorter wrote:“Black America is currently caught in certain ideological holding patterns—chief among them being the ideology of permanent victimhood—and that these today are ‘much more serious barriers to Black
well-being than is white racism.” Victimhood? Blacks are victims in areas that interfere with their well-being. They are robbed of equity by criminal banks like Wells Fargo. They were singled out for subprime loans, while many were eligible for conventional loans. They face discrimination in housing, health care, and from hostile police—thousands of whom have been caught posting racist comments on social media. Blacks are confined to environmentally toxic neighborhoods. Victimhood? So McWhorter says that by exposing these inequities, civil rights leaders, intellectuals, and scholars are committing a deed that’s worse than white racism, the element that is responsible for them? This is McWhorter’s usual funhouse mirror thinking. In the 2004 issue of Commentary that printed McWhorter’s outburst, there was a reference to the Holocaust on every other page. Does that mean that Commentary was wallowing in victimhood? No, American Jews are right to remind readers that with the rise of Hitler, Jews faced extermination, but before that thousands of Jews had assimilated into German society. Had become in a sense, white. Victimhood? No, McWhorter has victimized himself. His being assured a space by his billionaire oligarchic owners, a space that his target, the Black Left lacks, has made him lazy. Lacking the resources that McWhorter has, his battle with the Black Left becomes a mismatch. His opinions are financed by the Hoover Institute, the American Enterprise Institute, William E. Simons Foundation and the notorious Manhattan Institute, the John M. Olin Foundation, Inc., the JM Foundation, Koch Family Foundations, Claude R. Lambe Foundation, Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation which supported “The Bell Curve.” His assignment from the right seems to be that every time the Black Left says neither (nee-ther) he says neither ( nii-ther). Since the Black Left covers a number of issues, he is required to comment on matters about which he lacks understanding. Since “Wokeness” began to be spouted by some on the left, “Woke” being a term popularized by author William Melvin Kelly in 1962, it was inevitable that McWhorter would be pushed by his backers to comment on it. He rushed out a book called “Woke as a Religion” but spent so much time in the book straining to make the
analogy work that the book drowned under the weight of ignorant history and bad writing. His bad writing was first exposed by Jonathan Yardley in The Washington Post: “He obviously is a very smart guy, but a lot of the time he writes like a dumb one.” Maybe that’s why he uses words that can’t be found in the dictionary like “Victimhood” coined by people who sit on their asses all day creating double-speak whose purpose is that of owning progressives and Blacks. His books however are held in awe by the white media and white intelligentsia because he says what they say in private. When he appeared on “Morning Joe,” he was greeted like a conquering hero; he sounded really silly. He said that whichever brutality that police commit against Blacks is the result of the War on Drugs and when the war ends the police will be nice. On the show, during which Mika Brzezinski was shown nodding her head, giving his remarks her approval, he also prescribed proficiency in English as a way Blacks will get ahead. He should have been in attendance at a book party hosted by Booker T. Washington’s great-granddaughter, Sarah Washington O’Neal Rush, which took place in her grand house overlooking a Lake in Oakland. Black business people who speak excellent English told me that though their business proposals are qualitatively superior to those of whites, they regularly lose out to whites whose bids are inferior. In the Commentary 2004 issue, he dismissed my unpleasant run-ins with the police recounted in my book, “Another Day At The Front.” He wrote: “Not once to date have I had a nasty, intrusive run-in with the police, despite being no stranger to nightlife in cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Oakland, and despite having driven a beat-up car in tony white neighborhoods on a regular basis.” On June 11 2020, sixteen years later he was back defending the police. He has a real urge about the police. He wrote: “Some police officers are surely racist and act like it. But it does not follow that white cops routinely kill Black people in tense situations out of racist animus.” His pro-police stance is the policy of The Manhattan Institute. I recently read a story about a New York man attacking a woman on the city’s subway with his feces––that’s right, human excrement. The report sounded like something out of The Onion, a satirical media outlet, replete with an outlandish premise that speaks candidly to the realities of life. I was mistaken, as it turned out. The story was true and caught on video. This brand of street violence is becoming an alarming trend in New York City and cities across the United States. According to the Council on Criminal Justice’s crime research, homicides have surged by over 50% and gun violence by 8%. (CCJ). The reality is that the United States has a crime problem that has been exacerbated by both the COVID-19 pandemic and the massive layoffs that have led to considerable unemployment, particularly in major cities. The situation is destined to worsen as financial disparity widens between the haves and have-nots, and the uninformed continue to campaign for the defunding of police. I am horrified by the violence and devastation we’re witnessing throughout the country, and I am outraged at the fact that the only force we have to defend us and keep our streets safe and clean––law enforcement––is constantly being demoralized, overworked, and underappreciated. This has resulted in law enforcement retiring at unprecedented rates. We must do something about it so that we can alter the trajectory of our country, and we need to do it now. The first step toward resolving this issue is to increase investment in law enforcement and spend more money to assist in the recruitment of talented and educated police officers who are suited to the demands of the job. We also need to improve technology to better aid police to prevent crime in densely populated areas. I’ll be the first to admit that we need to clean up the bad apples within police departments, and I’m not blind to this, but the great majority of police officers are wonderful individuals who should be praised, not condemned. The second step is to strengthen law enforcement’s relationship with the communities they protect and serve. Communities and police will be safer if trust is restored and relationships are built. Not only will police and community members be able to more effectively interact with each other without fear for their own safety, but community members will also be able to view the police officers as
more than just the uniforms they wear. It will also assist in the removal of troublemakers from communities as well as the police force. Having events where police can connect with the public and community groups is an essential part of resolving this issue. The third stage is to convey a clear message to criminals that their predatory conduct against innocent individuals in their communities will not be tolerated. We must quit making excuses and constantly blaming everyone and everything else for the issues that plague our communities. Instead, we must look within ourselves to tackle these destructive issues and ask what we can do to better our communities and rid them of the ruinous behavior of criminal actors. While this may be more prevalent in some communities than it is in others, it is essential nonetheless in order to prevent criminals from traversing community borders. We need to toughen up on crime. This doesn’t mean targeting certain groups, instead it requires sending a clear message to criminals about what we will and won’t tolerate. We must emphasize the significance of the family unit and men participating in the direction of young men; this is in the best interests of our communities and country. Young men require honorable men to mentor them and serve as guides and resources. They must be a mentor who can show these young men what is and what is not acceptable. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough of them, which is why we see young men, particularly uneducated ones, with little respect for their communities and for human life. Our societal norms have shifted so dramatically over time that they have created an expectation of mediocrity and victimization that justifies not only the awful behavior of our young men, but of young people in general. The steps are clear in terms of what we need to do: support our officers, build better relationships between officers and communities, and focus on instilling better values in young people. Following these steps would change the trajectory of our current reality. Despite this, we must be honest with ourselves about both the state of our country and the ugliness that continues to spread within it regardless of who is committing these atrocious acts. We must address it, discuss it, and move forward. We must also be honest with ourselves about the state of our country and the ugliness that persists. How active are you in your own democracy? CHRISTINA
GREER PH.D. The past few years have been a stark reminder for many that our democracy is incredibly fragile and cannot be taken for granted. For far too many, democracy was something they thought this nation had attained, they could pat themselves on the back, put their “democracy” in a frame and hang it on the wall to be admired. What many of us have known and are constantly reminded of, is that democracy is a set of daily choices and decisions on the individual and collective level. We know this nation is far from perfect, but the only way it will change is if we become the most active participants on the electoral level, in our communities, and in our civic life. Since I am a professor, you know I love pop quizzes! So, pull out a piece of paper and a pen and get ready to take your quiz. Ok, here goes… Here are a series of questions about your elected officials: Who is your city council member, your state legislator, and your state senator? Who are the elected officials who hold the top three offices in New York City: Mayor, Comptroller, and Public Advocate? Who is your District Attorney? Who is your House Representative in Congress? Can you name the two U.S. Senators? Here are some miscellaneous questions, let’s see if you can answer: In what district do you vote? What community board represents your area? Who are your District Leaders and do you know what they do? Do you know when the primary election will be held (hint: this
June)? Do you know what date we go to the polls in November? As for your civic duties: Have you called or gone to the https:// portal.311.nyc.gov/ website to test your water quality (for free) in order for the city to better assess lead levels throughout neighborhoods and buildings? Have you supported Troop 6000 and/or do you know what that is? Does our neighborhood participate in community composting? These are just a few questions we should be able to answer in order to begin to become active participants in our democratic process. No worries if you do not know all of the answers. You can go to https:// www.voting. nyc/ to find out more about your voting process and you can go to https://www. mygovnyc.org/ to find out who your elected officials are. If we want to make change in our democracy we must be active participants. If you currently are not, this pop quiz is not meant to make you feel bad, it is meant to help you get started on the road to active participation and a better understanding of those charged with protecting our basic human and civil rights as well as crafting policies to protect us…everything from the environment to education, reproductive rights and allocation of funds.

Caribbean Update
Surinamese foundation wants probe into wartime atrocities By BERT WILKINSON Special to the AmNews Late last month, the main opposition party in Suriname staged a huge city rally, primarily aimed at reminding Surinamese that it is attempting to rebuild and reclaim its political base in time for the next general elections in the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community nation in 2025. But even as thousands turned out to fellowship and commiserate with former president and military strongman Desi Bouterse, civil society groups are signalling that they will do everything in their power to ensure that the former two-time coup maker, now 76, does not return to office, blaming him for mass murders, economic chaos and the migration of thousands of professionals to The Netherlands and other countries. On Feb. 25, 1980, then-army sergeant Bouterse and dozens of fellow soldiers staged a bloody military coup against the then Henck Arron led government, kicking it out of office, taking military power and setting the stage of one of the longest periods of economic decline and political instability in decades.
The Netherlands, Suriname’s former colonizer, the French, which controls neighboring French Guiana, and the U.S. decided to undermine the military administration by funding local guerilla groups. The ensuing war, staged mainly in the country’s Amazonian jungles, led to the murders of more than 500 people, many of them Maroons. In one southeastern village near French Guiana, soldiers wiped out more than 50 residents, accusing them of collaborating with resistance groups in one of the worst single day executions of the so-called bush war. Now, more than 40 years after the 1980 coup, civil society groups are trying to muster the level of energy required to keep atrocities of the 1980s on the frontburner of society and to press the incumbent administration of President Chan Santokhi into staging official probes into some incidents which have been shunted to the backburner at the expense of more significant ones. This week, the December 8th Foundation, named in remembrance of 15 opponents to military rule who were executed by firing squad in 1982, staged a memorial service to commemorate the deaths of three policemen who were ambushed at an outpost just
east of the capital city, Paramaribo, back in March 1987. The lightly reported event was deliberately organized to keep the pressure both on Bouterse as well as his NDP party and on government to stage probes that would trigger reportage and debate in society, thereby undermining any resurgence of the multiracial NDP. The men were ambushed at the outpost by men dressed in army fatigues, meaning that most believed they were government soldiers. For the Foundation and Chairman Sunil Oemrawsingh, Suriname society will not get closure if official enquiries are not held and healing is achieved. “No progress can be made as long as a climate of impunity persists. We are gathered here to remember but also to denounce the cowardly murders of these sons. Policemen who were lifted from their beds in undergarments by a murder squad and taken to the police station. Two policemen managed to escape. Fortunately the death toll was not higher,” Star News online newspaper quoted him as saying. The Foundation also wants a full inventory of all human rights violations between 1980 and at the end of the war at the
turn of the ’90s to be fully documented, the chairman said, as relatives laid wreaths at a small commemorative monument to the slain policemen. For his part, two-time democratically elected President Bouterse was last year sentenced to 20 years in prison for ordering the 1982 mass murders. The 15 had included four journalists, clergymen, academics and labor leaders, all accused of plotting with the West to reverse the military coup. Bouterse’s NDP lost to a Hindustani-dominated coalition in mid 2020 but it has been regrouping by taking political advantage of government struggles to right an ailing economy, pay better wages, deal with higher fuel and food prices and pressures to keep campaign promises for a better life. Early indications are that the governing coalition might spring a snap election around mid term to catch the NDP and other opposition outfits off guard but the NDP appears to be doing its homework now rather than wait for 2025 when the current electoral term ends. The current administration has also canceled February 25 as a national holiday in respect of the coup. The second was staged in December 1990.

IMMIGRATION KORNER Sometimes it's hard to tell whether it's still Trump’s America or Biden’s America when it comes to immigration and immigrants. Wednesday, March 16, was yet another day when it was simply #hardtotell. On the 16th, the Office of Inspector General overseeing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a damning report calling for the immediate evacuation of dozens of immigrants detained for civil immigration proceedings only at the Torrance County Detention Facility, a privately-run detention facility in Estancia, New Mexico about 60 miles southeast of Albuquerque. The OIG’s office said that from Feb. 1 to Feb. 3, 2022, they conducted an unannounced, in-person inspection of Torrance to determine whether it complied with the 2011 Performance Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS), as revised in December 2016. At the start of the inspection, the
report said, Torrance housed a total of 176 male ICE detainees and gets paid approximately $2 million a month to house the ICE detainees. But the report stated that during the inspections, they found critical facility staffing shortages and unsanitary living conditions that have led to health and safety risks for the detainees. According to the report, detainees are being housed in unsanitary living conditions, such as with clogged toilets, moldy sinks and water leaks and they include photographs of the claims. In one of the most shocking claims in the report, the OIG said detainees were drinking water from a faucet in a common area meant for filling mop buckets. The report also said severe understaffing at Torrance prevented guards from properly monitoring detainees, threatening their safety. Torrance is supposed to have 245 full-time staff, but in early February, almost half the positions were vacant, most in the area of security. “We recommend the acting director of ICE immediately relocate all detainees from Torrance County
Detention Facility and place no detainees there unless and until the facility ensures adequate staffing and appropriate living conditions,” the Department of Homeland Security Office OIG said in the report. Surprisingly, the Biden administration’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Tae Johnson responded with a highly unusual rebuke, reminiscent of the Trump era. They claimed, along with CoreCivic, the private company that runs the facility, that the government watchdog staged the photos and fabricated the claims. Worst was that ICE refused to comply with the OIG’s recommendation. As Trump would, they signaled the agency would not withdraw the now 60 detainees from the facility, down from 176 men when the inspectors visited last month. They also claimed that the facility was up to par and that repairs were being made. “We have serious concerns about the accuracy and integrity of this report,” acting ICE chief of staff Jason Houser said in a letter to the inspector general that was also published
with the report. “In a number of instances, it appears OIG has falsified or mischaracterized evidence, and has ignored facts presented to it to achieve preconceived conclusions.” But the OIG has denied any wrongdoing and said its team “provided professional, independent oversight and has documented support for all reported findings.” The watchdog said it verified its findings with photographs and interviews with detainees. Interestingly, Torrance failed an inspection by a federal contractor in July 2021, records show, but ICE has claimed that since then, the company has passed other inspections and increased staffing levels substantially. The OIG countered that an internal ICE report found Torrance was understaffed as recently as March 1. So far, the immigrant born Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, has not weighed in on the issue or said if he will agree with the OIG recommendation. In the past he has said he would not tolerate unsafe conditions for detainees and has withdrawn detainees from facilities in Bristol County, Mass., and Irwin County, Ga., for allegedly fail-
ing to meet his standards. Advocates, however, slammed the administration for yet again failing immigrants and falling well short of its big once-upon-a-time promise to end forprofit immigration detention centers. “We are shocked but not surprised by the findings in the OIG report describing dangerous, unsanitary and inhumane conditions at the Torrance County Detention Facility,” Rebecca Sheff, senior staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico, said in a statement. “We call upon ICE to immediately release, not transfer, all the people detained there, so they can reunite with their loved ones and receive the community-based resources and care they urgently need.” It is hard to comprehend why ICE would denounce the OIG’s report and not move the detainees out of the facility given the conditions. These are not mass murderers, but immigrants detained for civil immigration proceedings. They deserve to be treated with human dignity and respect. Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes to co-host Oscars 2022 By LAPACAZO SANDOVAL and SUNIL SADARANGANI Special to the AmNews The 94th Academy Awards are March 27 returning with three co-hosts, two of which are African American women: Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes, and Amy Schumer. Let’s not forget that the award ceremony is produced by Will Packer and Shayla Cowan. We are predicting that the show will be well-received despite the controversy regarding the trimmed-down event due to the pandemic. This year in an effort to keep safe, all attendees in the audience need to show proof of vaccination and at least two negative PCR tests. Performers and presenters, however, will only be required to undergo testing before taking the stage. The list of familiar faces taking the stage on Oscars night continues to grow but at the time of filing confirmed presenters include Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”) who won the best supporting actor award (2021) for his role as Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman in “The Batman”), Lupita Nyong’o who won an Oscar for her feature film debut in “12 Years A Slave,” Rosie Perez who was nominated for the best supporting actress (1993) for “Fearless,” Wesley Snipes (“White Men Can’t Jump”) and Chris Rock, a two-time Oscar host who will soon be seen in David O. Russell’s next film. This past weekend Oscar watchers followed two awards ceremonies that often predict key categories. The Directors Guild of America Awards awarded Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) as best director. And across the pond, the BAFTA Awards, held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, “The Power of the Dog” also won the best film. In the documentary category “Summer of Soul” won. A talk with New Federal Theatre’s Elizabeth Van Dyke By LINDA ARMSTRONG Special to the AmNews Theater is supposed to reflect what is happening in society, and one of the things that I have always loved about Woodie King’s New Federal Theatre (NFT) is that for 52 years, it has relished the opportunity to do just that. NFT has always specialized in being a place that spotlights the creations of women and people of color and focuses on telling our stories. Now, it is focusing on telling a story that happened in 1925, which dealt with a forbidden love between a Black teacher and a Chinese businessman in the Mississippi Delta. It was a Chinese man who wanted to send his daughter to an allwhite school in the Mississippi Delta and fought for it in the courts. We found out there was a large Asian population in the Mississippi Delta. The slaves were freed and they had the Asians picking cotton. Then Asians started owning stores. The Blacks were sharecroppers indebted to the farmers. I love history and especially Black history because our history is so rich and varied and we have just endured and overcome so
much. Then I saw the intersectionality of ours and the Chinese culture. In the case of Lum vs. Rice, in the city of Rosedale they won, then in the state of Mississippi they lost, in the Supreme Court they lost. So only whites could go to white schools. ‘Black Girl, Call Home’ & Black Girl Songbook: poetry & music history
By JORDANNAH ELIZABETH Special to the AmNews The world is far from perfect and oppression will not be eradicated overnight. Nonetheless, small steps taken each and every day to amplify the voices and creative work of Black women and our culture can help the cultural health of the world to improve. Improvement can arise from the publishing of Black women’s voices and pushing forward positive and historically informative (and accurate) narratives to the global audience through media platforms and celebratory promotion. While there are so many great books and content currently out in the world, here are a couple of notable creative endeavors by the powerful and highly inspiring writers Jasmine Mans and Danyel Smith. Mans’ book, the highly anticipated poetry collection “Black Girl, Call Home,” is reminiscent, if not comparable, to the work of Gwendolyn Brooks and explores lyrical ideas and her personal understanding and relationship with feminism, queerness and Blackness. “‘Black Girl, Call Home’ is a love letter to the wander-
ing Black girl and a vital companion to any woman on a journey to find truth, belonging, and healing,” writes the book’s publisher, Penguin. Representation of Black women searching within themselves for existential clarity and emotional and societal safety is such an important perspective, experience and narrative that stems from a long line of Black women sharp and vivid writers such as Lorde, Huston and Morrison. In the realm of music history, the podcast series Black Girl Songbook, hosted by the legendary music editor and journalist Danyel Smith, is an invaluable resource that highlights the amazing music and lives of Black women musicians. For two seasons, Smith has covered Rihanna, CeCe Winans, Aaliyah and many more. Not only is Smith an excavator of history, but she is an amazing storyteller who takes listeners on a journey through the amazing musical presence and catalogs of Black women. “Black Girl, Call Home” and Black Girl Songbook are two great offerings amongst so much amazing work that is being offered to the world right now. Be sure to engage, learn and enjoy because these creative expressions are authentic and worth exploring.

Resort & Travel
Off-the-beaten-track places to explore this summer By SHERYL NANCE-NASH Special to the AmNews Kamalame Cay, Bahamas When you want to get away from it all, go to Kamalame Cay in Andros in the Bahamas. Just getting to this private island is an adventure. I took a flight, commuter flight, cab ride to dock and water taxi to the island. The minute the water taxi docked on the island, it’s like I clicked my heels twice and I was there, all the machinations of getting there went out of my head. I was in another world. All that mattered was the beauty surrounding me, lush greenery, beautiful white sand beach. You might think you’re in a movie. I did. The resort is located just off the world’s third-largest Great Barrier reef on 97 acres with coconut palm groves, bougainvilleas, an array of stunning vegetation that competes with the sparkling bluest-of-blue sea for what deserves the most oohs and ahhs. The bungalows, villas, cottages, and beach houses are spread out for miles, you don’t have to worry about traffic when you’re wheeling around in your golf cart along the white sand roads. It mostly feels like you and Mother Nature. Even when it’s mealtime, or you hang out on the beach or freshwater pool, there’s just enough people to have a lively atmosphere. You can do a lot, be it bone and deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, diving, playing tennis, biking, picnicking, or chill watching a movie at the alfresco cinema, at the pool, sipping a cocktail at the Monkey Bar, or in a hammock along the beach. If you’re in a really quiet mood, simply go from your back patio/deck and walk the few steps to your cabana, curl up with a book, a glass of wine on the table and marvel at the sea in front of you. A spa visit is a must-do. Kamalame boasts the Bahamas only overwater spa. I’ll never forget the wind blowing, the sea splashing and the big thrill, a stingray swimming past during my Swedish massage. The fullservice spa offers everything from facials, exfoliation, wraps and custom treatments. When it comes to cuisine, the resort impresses there too. Kamalame gets that it’s the little things. Every morning there’s a continental breakfast basket delivered to your room in case you don’t want to come to the Great House. Every afternoon freshly baked cookies arrive at your room. Staff is warm, genuine, you’ll likely have many conversations and maybe even make a friend. Oh, this here is paradise, peace.
Hotel Rangá, Hella, Iceland To experience this majestic world wonder in its full glory, South Iceland offers good odds and optimum viewing and Hotel Rangá is one of the best places to stay given its secluded countryside location providing darker skies, less artificial lights, and even Northern Lights wake up calls. Plus, Hotel Rangá is also home to an advanced stargazing observatory with a roll-off roof, two high quality telescopes, and an astronomy expert, perfect for nights when the Aurora Borealis may not make a visit. Treat yourself to one of the hotel’s continent-themed suites––featuring décor from Africa to Antarctica. You can test your taste buds by munching on cross smoked puffin and reindeer carpaccio at the popular Adv Restaurant Rangá. The Galapagos Live your best life and go ahead and mark this off your bucket list. Sail the Galapagos with Ecoventura. You don’t have to deal with crowds. The tour is for just 20 guests. The identical luxury expedition yachts, Origin & Theory by Ecoventura, are named after Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and Origin of Species. They are managed like floating boutique hotels and are the only Galapagos vessels to have joined the ranks of the ever so chic-chic, esteemed Relais & Chateaux collection. The sevennight itinerary includes daily excursions and educational briefings led by two certified naturalists—and boasts the most favorable passenger to naturalist ratio in the Galapagos. Daily activities include beautiful snorkeling opportunities, kayaking, beach walks and hiking tours that bring you up close and personal to the destination’s most fascinating species. Wildlife wanders freely and fearlessly throughout the archipelago. Cherish the moments you’ll spend swimming with sea turtles, sunbathing with sea lions or face-to-face with the famous blue-footed boobies. Southernmost Beach Resort, Key West If you want to stay stateside, consider the newly renovated Southernmost Beach Resort in Key West. Situated along the quieter southern limit of the famed Duval Street, the resort features classic coastal charm and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Choose among three palmfringed pools with private cabanas, a secluded tanning pier, a signature restaurant, and four bars. A full-service spa, group fitness classes, live entertainment, and unique programming, including cocktail tastings and painting classes, make Southernmost Beach Resort ideal.

BIRDLAND, RIO DANCE, SISTA’S Pianist and composer Monty Alexander brings his colorful repertoire to Birdland jazz club (315 West 44th Street) March 22-26. Alexander’s trio will include bassist Luke Sellick and drummer Jason Brown. He is a traditional jazz pianist who implements his extensive seven decades in playing originals and interpretations of music by Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver and Stevie Wonder. In the early ’80s he earned a reputation as a serious jazz traditionalist playing memorable duos with Tommy Flanagan and Randy Weston. Always staying attuned to his Jamaican roots, Alexander formed a reggae band in the 1990s and recorded a collection of Bob Marley songs on the album “Stir It Up” ( Telarc 1999), and in 2000, he recorded “Monty Meets Sly & Robbie” producer/writer/musicians duo. Established jazz singers such as Ernestine Anderson and Mary Stallings acknowledged the pianist for his soft lyrical touch. Most of Alexander’s 15 Concord recordings between 1978 and 1996 presented him in swinging trio contexts; five dates with Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis and others associated with pianist Oscar Peterson like Mads Vinding, Ed Thigpen and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. Alexander’s playing is magical and that varied repertoire rattles your toes. For reservations and schedule visit birdlandjazz.com. CRIA is the raw embodiment of youth dances taken from the street to legitimate stage. They are taking the movement vocabularies of dancinha, a hot mix of funk, samba, and breakdance, and passinho, the life force of favela culture; choreographer Alice Ripoll relocates the wild exuberance of adolescence through dance. Driven by the social injustice
in Brazil, the piece alternates between intense states of exultation and celebration, with the highly charged group absorbing and reconstructing the music’s rapid and jerky rhythm. The choreographer Ripoll was born in Rio de Janeiro. She studied to be a psychoanalyst at age 21 and took the path to study dance when she became curious about the bodies and movement research possibilities. Her work embrac-
es contemporary dance and urban dance styles from Brazil through research that opens space for the dancers to transform into images the experiences and memories that still live in each one. Alice directs two groups: REC and SUAVE. There will be one show each evening at 7:30 p.m. at BAM Fisher located at 321 Ashland Place. For tickets and information visit bam.org or call 718-636-4100.
Sista’s Place (456 Nostrand Ave.), the jazz oasis in the heart of Bed-Stuy is rarely open on a Sunday but on April 3, at 3 p.m. it will host the memorial celebration of the pioneer jazz promoter and Jazz Spotlight News publisher Jim Harrison, hosted by his main man WBGO’s Rob Crocker. Sista’s Place was his favorite spot, where he had his own special table but that’s how our man Jim rolled. If you knew him, be there, all his jazz buddies will have a special jam session in his honor. I would mention the names but Jim knew all the musicians so it may very well be one of those jampacked places like the old Minton’s where Mary Lou Williams said there were more musicians in the place than patrons. But that’s how Jim rolled, nuff said it’s about Jim Harrison whom we miss madly. Be there lots of talk, loads of memories, great stories and the music, well you probably won’t catch all these cats together in one place again, maybe never, but that’s how Jim rolled…

has an incredible, unprecedented, rich legacy and I want to honor that legacy, remember that legacy and build on that legacy. I’m the bridge to the past, the present and the future. The mission continues to be to integrate people of color, minorities and women. Now you could go out of Julliard and get into a television series—Blacks, people of color and women. It’s not necessarily equitable. We have done this institution, Black Spectrum Theatre, Pan Asian Repertory, all of those have paved the way for the young artists of color. Is it equal yet? No. There are some people who need that launch, the place, that home. We need the Black Theatre—it’s through our own experience, our own
lens. We need equity in terms of funding to do the work, produce well, live well and pay well.” Considering running the theater and being a Black woman, Van Dyke commented, “I have to give credit to Woodie King Jr., because we’re talking about in 1970, that a part of his mission was women and he has always championed and given women opportunity. One of his earlier plays was by J.E. Franklin, directed by Shaneille Perry, who directed 30 productions at NFT. He gave me opportunities to direct, he gave Pearl Cleage a platform. Woodie King has paved a way and recognized a person’s ability when they didn’t see it in themselves. So, he nurtured so many women di-

my entire life with fulfilling a life in the theater, to live an artist’s life to create. In doing so you endure, you have strength, tenacity. I con-
tinue the passion for the art, the love of my people, the love of great, great theater and I am a woman. I’m walking strongly with faith, commitment and

Maude Russell, chorus line dancer and creator of the Charleston By HERB BOYD Special to the AmNews Among the pleasures reading the late Jean-Claude Baker and Chris Chase’s book “Josephine: The Hungry Heart,” their biography of the great dancer and chanteuse Josephine Baker, is the gallery of notables attracted to the performer’s dynamic vortex. Three of them were chorus line dancers with her— Florence Mills, Maude Russell, Evelyn Anderson, and Lydia Jones. And each of them is given considerable citations in the book, particularly Russell. During my time with JeanClaude, one of Josephine’s adopted children, at his restaurant on 42nd Street, he would regale me with stories that were too risqué about the dancers, including Russell, to put in the book. He seemed especially fond of recounting the life and times of Russell, and often wished he had more time to devote to a book about her. He never completed his dream project, nor has anyone else as far as I can discover, though the website Blackthen.com has a brief synopsis of her career that span some 22 years and it was often claimed that she introduced the Charleston dance on Broadway. Billed as the “Slim Princess” during her glory days on stage and film, Russell was born to a white father and a Black mother in Texas, and as a young girl she worked as a ticket taker and by virtue of this situation met a star performer Sam Russell and they were soon married. Their marriage was as brief as it was violent and having saved a small sum of money, she left him and embarked on her own performances on stage and vaudeville. Her introduction to the world of entertainment began on stage where she was often cast

in the chorus line. It was during these engagements, including at the famous Cotton Club that she performed with a number of aspiring hoofers, none more influential than Josephine Baker. Even so, she had her moments in the spotlight beginning in 1922 with her role in “Liza,” a musical written by Maceo Pinkard. She rocked the show with her routine of the Charleston dance and gained even wider recognition when it was performed in “Runnin’ Wild.” From this notoriety, she performed in a succession of shows, mostly cameo appearances but nonetheless keeping her name on the tongue and rolodex of

countless producers and promoters. “Dixie to Broadway” (1924); “Chocolate Scandals” (1927); “Keep Shufflin’” (1928); “Mamba’s Daughters” (1940); and “The Big White Fog” in 1940, where she was featured with the enormously talented Canada Lee in this play written by Theodore Ward, were among a few of the productions she graced. “St. Louis Woman” in 1946 is listed as her last show and seven years later she married Septimus Rutherford, chief steward on a major shipping line and retired from performing. But apparently, she had time to reminisce, which she did ex-
tensively with Jean-Claude with an emphasis on the time she spent with Josephine. In several places in the book, she reflected on Josephine’s comic routine that never failed to steal the show. There was a hint of rivalry between them, but they remained cordial friends as they moved from show to show, from continent to continent. In the mid-1930s when Josephine and Russell returned to the states, their relationship was in tatters, and so were Josephine’s performances, so much so that Russell was called in to replace her. Russell was performing with Fats Waller’s band at the Loew’s State Theater when representatives of the Shubert Theater approached her. “They wanted a replacement for Josephine because she wasn’t going over,” Russell told Jean-Claude. “And I opened on a Monday and got a beautiful write-up in the paper, so they came looking for me on Tuesday.” But apparently things were immediately patched up and Josephine resumed as the star, and Russell continued at Loew’s, according to Jean-Claude. One evening, he said, Russell visited Josephine after her show and spent time with her in the dressing room, where Russell commented favorably on one of Josephine’s outfits. When Russell asked her how it felt to be a big star, Josephine replied, “You get used to it.” Very little is known about Russell’s life after her career ended on stage, but she was noted as working as a switchboard operator in an Atlantic City hotel, however the years are not mentioned. She was 104 when she died on March 29, 2001. (And this was the only photo available that didn’t include copyright restrictions.)
ACTIVITIES FIND OUT MORE Other than scant bits of information online and in Jean-Claude’s book, most of what we know about her life is found in rare copies of Playbill. DISCUSSION To read the more intimate remarks about her and Josephine, get Jean-Claude’s book. PLACE IN CONTEXT You can see that she lived more than a century so that places her extensively in the 20th century.

for him in the race. Brooklyn Democratic Party Leader and Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn said that she has known Cunningham for over 12 years since they met when she ran for her seat in 2010. Bichotte said that Cunningham is very experienced, dedicated, and a solid staple of the community. “As you can see in this room, we have a number of people with different ideologies. They’re moderate, they’re progressive. You have different religions, Jewish and Christian showed up to support him. Black, white, Caribbean,” said Bichotte at the cafe on Election Night. “We’re just excited that he is a true representation of this community.” “Brian has showed that he’s a true unifier,” said Black Lives Matter Brooklyn President Anthony Beckford. Councilmember Rita Joseph, another fierce supporter of Cunningham’s, was also present at Lips Cafe. She believes that she and Cunningham will be great partners in the city and the state, and share similar interests in housing, education, and health care. Cunningham will soon be sworn into office and plans to hit the ground running. “The big thing is the budget,” said Cunningham about next steps. He said he plans on advocating for tenants and homeowners, childcare, health care, and criminal justice reform in the state budget over the two months left until June primaries. The June primaries is another election cycle that will determine if Cunnigham stays in office.

Local Madaline McKay said, “The people protesting for the Depot are not community-based people. They are from New Jersey, blah, blah, blah. They have no connection with the community. None whatsoever: they don’t shop here, they don’t live here, they don’t know the people here.” NYPD Community Affairs Chaplain Peter Jones said, “I am very disturbed, and I am very angry because they just opened this sex shop right across from a church and a mosque, and on the corner from a school. That is blatantly disrespectful because you’ve got kids that have to walk from school home, or from home to school—and have to pass this shop every day.” McKay offered, “Take it somewhere else. The kids should learn this at home, and as much as their parents want them to know. Put a library, but a bookstore, put a shelter there. Things that are needed.” On his social media, Buzzetti stated, “At the end of the day, it’s not my neighborhood, it’s their Brooklyn neighborhood and we do need to be sensitive about their concerns because we are a new business that’s a bit racy. I do understand sex can be controversial to some people. After opening 11 locations, I can almost state with absolute certainty, and assure the community that most residents will not even notice us. The communities we serve all become desensitized, in about 2-3 months, after we open. It becomes simple like they are passing their local deli, when they walk along our storefront, after the initial shock.” “I spoke to Mayor Adams, and he said that the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings will be acting as a liaison between the community and the business,” McCall told the Amsterdam News. Education City Council passes resolution in support of CUNY’s ‘New Deal,’ Congresspeople back ‘em up By STEPHON JOHNSON Amsterdam News Staff

The New York City Council has joined the CUNY union calling for a “New Deal.” Last week, the City Council passed a resolution calling for state legislation and New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul. to acknowledge and pass the Professional Staff Congress – City University of New York (PSCCUNY ). The last group represents all CUNY staff and faculty members. “For decades, CUNY has not only made higher education possible for New Yorkers of all backgrounds, but it has been a proven stepping stone to economic prosperity. Now is the time for us to double down on this success story!” said Councilman Justin Brannan during a news conference. “Albany must pass the New Deal for CUNY. Together we can prevent further cuts to CUNY, reverse decades of cavalier underfunding, restore a tuition-free university and increase the fulltime faculty-to-students ratio. It’s time for something big and bold. New York needs a world-class public higher education system. New York needs the New Deal for CUNY. “Let’s get it done!” The news conference consisted of Brannan, Council Higher Education Chair Eric Dinowitz, New York State Sen. Andrew Goundardes along with CUNY faculty and staff. According to the union, when adjusted for inflation, per-student state funding for CUNY senior colleges has fallen 38% since 1990 and 18% since
2008—years of disinvestment in CUNY. Senior colleges of CUNY are funded largely by the state. The community colleges are funded by the state and the city, with the city providing 42% of the funding in addition to the state’s 30% share. The council and the union have friends in Washington, D.C. Congresspeople Carolyn Maloney, Ritchie Torres, Adriano Espaillat and others threw their support behind the new deal. “As a former teacher in New York City’s Welfare Education Program, I know firsthand how free education can change the trajectory of students’ lives for the better,” stated Maloney. “It is also why I, along with so many of my Democratic colleagues, have been fighting on local, state, and federal levels to restore funding levels for higher education across the country.” “To help every student succeed in our state’s higher education system, CUNY urgently needs funding to hire more faculty members, invest in mental health resources, and address deteriorating infrastructure,” added Torres. In January, Hochul announced a $1.5 billion increase in operation support for CUNY and State University of New York (SUNY) over the next five years. This includes more than $170 million for CUNY senior colleges next year. The union is calling for more. Union officials have pointed out that the university relies too heavily on undergrads, lacks mental health counselors, and holds
classes in facilities that they feel are crumbling amid tuition hikes. This is why so many people are ready to pick up the gloves and fight on behalf of the union. “We’re proud to join the City Council, and a growing coalition of lawmakers, labor unions, community groups, students and alumni in calling on the Senate and the Assembly to make New Deal for CUNY investments their priority in the budget negotiations,” said Professional Staff Congress President James Davis, Ph.D, at the news conference. “This wealthy state can afford to end the shortages of full-time faculty and staff, the dependence on low-paid adjuncts and the degradation of our CUNY buildings and facilities. The time has come for a well-funded, tuition-free CUNY education.” “Thank you to Councilmember Brannan, Council Higher Education Chair Eric Dinowitz and all the Council members for putting the people of New York first! CUNY was well-funded and tuition-free for New York residents for more than a century,” added Rémysell Salas, campaign director of the CUNY Rising Alliance. “New York would not be the city and state it is today had CUNY not provided a way for waves of immigrants to receive a free, rigorous college education. If a free, fully-funded CUNY was good enough for the majority white population in its first century, surely it is good enough for the majority students of color population today.”

Faith-based leaders, VNSNY address hospice access in Harlem, Bronx By CHANDRA WILSON Since its founding more than 130 years ago, the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) has made equal access to health care central to its non-profit mission. Today, the organization leads the charge in improving access to health care for all New Yorkers, including compassionate, culturally sensitive end-of-life care. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a mere 8% of African American Medicare beneficiaries enroll in hospice, compared with 48% of white enrollees. VNSNY founded the HOPE (Hospice Outreach Patient and Provider Education) Program in 2015 to address this stark health care disparity and improve access to hospice information and care for residents of Harlem. The program was so successful, it was expanded in 2020 to the Bronx. Through the HOPE Program, VNSNY works with neighborhood doctors’ offices, hospitals, community-based health care providers and other health care leaders so they can talk to patients about hospice and palliative care as illness progresses or reaches the terminal stage. Local faith-based lead-
ers also play an important role because they can help people understand how this kind of care fits in with faith and beliefs. Additionally, the HOPE Program works with community groups to help people plan for their future, talk to their families, and to learn that hospice can actually give them more time with the people they love. As part of its community outreach programing, a VNSNY Hospice team, spearheaded by Michelle Drayton, RN, MPH, director for Hospice and Palliative Care Outreach and the HOPE and Connect2Well programs hosted the first in its 2022 event series for faith and community leaders. The historic Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem was the setting for this sold-out event, which took place on Friday, February 18. HOPE HEALS: FAITH EMPOWERS was designed to educate faith leaders about the HOPE and CONNECT2WELL programs and their mission to address the underutilization and lack of access to home care and health services among chronically ill and at-risk Black and Latinx adults. By working with key stakeholders, community-based organizations and faith lead-
ers, the goal of the HOPE program is to bridge the gap in information and access to resources within Harlem and the Bronx. Chaired by Pastor Corey Kennard, pastor of Amplify Christian Church; Jacques DeGraff, associate pastor at Canaan Baptist Church of Christ; and Michelle Drayton, the event provided an opportunity for community leaders to meet and dialogue with members of VNSNY’s leadership. This special gathering was designed to cultivate relationships with faith and community leaders and raise awareness about VNSNY’s services and how to access them. “It was truly remarkable to gather leaders from the community and introduce them to all VNSNY has to offer,” said Drayton, who organized the event. “It’s such important work––spreading the word in these communities about the powerful benefits that come from providing physical and spiritual healing where people live—in their homes and neighborhoods. It was a fantastic opportunity to share our perspective on the many types of care that VNSNY provides in home and community settings.” Members of VNSNY leadership spoke at the event, including VNSNY CEO Dan

Savitt, who offered his insight as to why this type of collaboration is so important. “One of the most essential aspects of effective health care is communication, so we looked at this event as one step in a conversation that we hope will continue for months and years to come,” said Savitt. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to connect with these groups, and to open the door for more people to receive the kind of physical, emotional and spiritual care that can make the end of life a truly uplifting experience.” “Whatever the challenges our communities face, we will be here, working together to create a world where health and access to care are a collective good, shared by all,” Savitt emphasized. The event continued with presentations by members of Behavioral Health, CHOICE, CHHA and Hospice. Representatives from community-based organizations and several elected officials were also in attendance.

Samuel Bykov is a member of this organization and is a Holocaust survivor from Ukraine. When the Russian invasion of Ukraine commenced in February, Bill Tingling and Bykov got in contact with each other and started talking about what they could both do to help. “In this case we decided, our board of directors and Bill, to help Ukraine and maintain health,” said Bykov. “In terms of maintaining health, we started to collect medical items and prepared to send one container to Ukraine, and found a place in Poland to deliver these items. We’re sending anything necessary for the military as well.” Bykov mentioned that the association has plans to open a center for humanitarian health with telephone lines that will connect to the Ukrainian government and the Red Cross in Ukraine. As a Holocaust survivor, Bykov felt the need to express his sentiment about the attacks on the nation, comparing them to the genocide seen during the Holocaust. “Unfortunately, this is happening today, and they need to be brought to trial,” said Bykov, referring to the Russian regime. As footage of Black Ukrainians trying to flee spread across the media, organi-
zations such as The State of African Diaspora (SOAD) have stepped in to assist Africans fleeing the nation. “Getting the messages and seeing the images made it very clear that African students needed support because there were no support systems there for their evacuation,” said Sharon Parris-Chambers, an ambassador for SOAD, based in the organization’s Foreign Affairs Ministry. Parris-Chambers recalled talking to an African student who claimed they were in need of food and internet access alongside the dilemma of losing important documents they were traveling with. She claimed that organizations such as the Ghana Students Association in Hungary and International Organization for Migration are assisting some Africans with needed resources. “Because we are now intervening with them and monitoring them, we ask them that they make sure they pass on information about trafficking of persons,” said Parris-Chambers, who claimed that the IOM reported an increase of human trafficking from Ukraine. “We were concerned about that, and their relocation.” Parris-Chambers reports that some were able to relocate to Germany, Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria. She advised for anyone seeking support from SOAD, contact their emergency response system email at ers@ thestateofafricandiaspora.com.
Before COVID-19 disallowed large in-person gatherings, the festival ran uninterrupted for nine years. At its most recent live event, nearly ten thousand people were in attendance. In the place of the event, the festival’s podcast kept the conversation going while highlighting some of the books published during the pandemic. “Our digital engagements have provided a good platform to talk about the compelling books South African authors have continued to write, but nothing can beat the experience of an in-person event,” added Calitz. The festival is committed to creating a space to celebrate South African writers. It strives to instill a love of reading with the program designed to engage, entertain and inspire conversations among festival-goers long after the event. Last year produced five literary awards to African writers. These include: “At Night All Blood Is Black,” a novel by French-Senegalese writer and academic David Diop who scooped the International Booker Prize. “La plus secrète mémoire des hommes” (“The Most Secret Memory of Men”), a novel by Senegalese writer Mohamed
Mbougar Sarr, winner of the French Prix Goncourt. Paulina Chiziane was awarded the 2021 Camões Prize for literature awarded to writers from Portuguese-speaking countries. The jury unanimously decided to award the Prize to the Mozambican writer, highlighting her vast production and critical reception, as well as the academic and institutional recognition of her work. The jury also referred to the importance she attaches in her books to the problems of Mozambican and African women. Other winners were Damon Galgut, author of “The Promise”– –a family saga spanning four decades, each of which features a death in the family, and Abdulrazak Gurnah who received the Nobel Prize for Literature for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents. Gurnah’s work includes the novels “Paradise,” “By the Sea,” and, most recently, “Afterlives.” The Open Book Festival has twice been shortlisted for the London Book Fair Excellence Awards.

economic activities are grinding to a halt as small-, mediumand large-scale businesses hitherto dependent on petrol and diesel––because of unreliable electricity supply––have reduced production. Authorities blame the crisis on the recall in January of about 170 million liters of tainted fuel imported from Europe. In February, the government announced it had released one billion liters of fuel from the national reserve to normalize distribution yet scarcity has lingered for over a month now. The government has failed to offer adequate explanation, frustrating the public even further. Ordinary citizens are suffering. Rose Ademua, a civil servant in Abuja, in an interview with The East African, lamented: “There is no light, no fuel, the situation is terrible and we are appealing to the government for quick intervention before people die of hunger.” Nigeria produces 1.2 million barrels of crude oil, but exports it all as its four refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna are

Compounding the crisis, electric power was interrupted two weeks ago when the national power grid malfunctioned due to glitches in the operating system, paralyzing major commercial and industrial cities across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja. Only about 47% of Nigerians have access to electricity when it is available, according to World Bank estimates. Mele Kyari of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), attributed the current gas shortage to hoarding and panic buying. “Somehow we’ve not been able to get the dynamics right,” said analyst Rotimi Olawale. “To be very fair and honest, in the last couple of years we have not witnessed this fuel scarcity that we’re seeing now. BY OLAYEMI ODESANYA Special to the AmNews On March 12, attendees from all over the United States and parts of Nigeria attended New Jersey’s own Teniola Ajala and Bosun Salami wedding at Royal Oaks Centre in Lekki, Nigeria. “To say I actually don’t mind being with this one person is growth. Bosun is the guy I’ve always dreamed and prayed for. He is a dash of what God knows I need, and a sprinkle of what I didn’t expect to come,” said Teni Ajala Salami. Teni earned her masters in communication at the University of Bridgeport, and currently works as an advertising editor. She also owns her business Marycle Lashes as a certified lash specialist. “You know when people say ‘marry your best friend, ‘e get why.’ Well, I’m glad to say Teni and I are a perfect testament for that.
Being with her these past couple of years has been such a remarkable journey and cannot wait for the next chapter of our lives together,” said Bosun Salami. Salami earned his masters here at NJIT as a Network Engineer. The couple met at a mosque during the yearly Eid celebration in June 2018. Bosun saw Teni taking a picture from afar, and was amazed by her beauty and aura. Bosun wasn’t able to greet her officially since he had to rush to work but he was very intrigued to meet Teni. He started to investigate through Instagram and found they had a mutual friend. After getting the confirmation Teni was single, Bosun expressed his interest and they connected insistently. Two and a half years later, they were engaged. The wedding was full of friends and family of each side of the couple wearing native Nigerian attire.

The Senate Democratic conference has proposed a suspension of the gas tax for the remainder of this year, between May 1 and December 31. The suspension to lower gas prices by lifting state-imposed motor fuel and sales taxes is excellent news to New Yorkers “There’s no question that Putin’s war against Ukraine is causing a significant spike in gas prices, and that it’s having an impact on working New Yorkers who don’t have other options for essential travel,”

WNBA hoop star remains in Russian custody awaiting trial
110 SERVICES
By STEPHON JOHNSON Amsterdam News Staff Brittney Griner is the personification of the year 2022. Her arrest and current time serving in Russia for a marijuana-related offense is a Venn diagram with international conflict, sports, gender, and race. It’s a gumbo of headaches all around. In mid-February, WNBA/Phoenix Mercury player Brittney Griner was detained by Russian authorities after allegedly trying to pass vape cartridges containing hashish oil through airport security. For her crime, she could possibly face a decade in jail in Russia. She’s being investigated for a so-called “large scale transportation of drugs.” Russian courts extended her arrest to May 19. In the middle of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, and America’s reluctance to send troops over on Ukraine’s behalf in fear of provoking Russian President Vladimir Putin, the White House is stuck between calling for a return of a statesperson over a minor crime (by American standards) while watching Russia bomb Ukrainians with bomb after bomb. However, they’ve demanded that U.S. officials see Griner personally. Griner has been under Russia’s thumb since Feb. 17. In a statement provided to the AmNews, the WNBA said, “In close collaboration with U.S. government agencies, elected officials, individuals, and organizations with expertise in these matters, and Brittney Griner’s representatives and family, we continue to work diligently to get her safely home to the United States. This continues to be a complex situation that is extremely difficult for Brittney, her family, and all who are hoping for a swift resolution. Our number one priority remains her safe return.” Griner plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA and that franchise is in the middle of its own controversy. Franchise owner Robert Sarver is embroiled in a scandal for alleged racist, misogynistic, and abusive behavior. The American Sports Accountability Project (ASAP) and other social justice organizations have called on the NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and the league’s board of governors to remove Sarver. “While we join others in wishing for Ms. Griner’s safe return, our mission at ASAP is to demand accountability for abusive behavior within the leadership of American sports leagues,” read an

emailed statement from ASAP. Many professional women’s basketball players use their bodies all year. Once they’re done with the WNBA season, many tend to head overseas to play for teams that pay more money, significant money, for them to continue balling. So, do people overlook that WNBA players must play overseas to make more money? According to Dave Zirin, a writer with a reputation for connecting sports to politics, “Yes.” “I think people have no idea that 50% of players go overseas during the offseason,” Zirin said. “They have no idea that the WNBA treats them like parttime athletes, which compels them to have a year-round schedule. They have no idea of the toll that takes on an individual or a family.” This isn’t a brand-new concept. In a 2015 piece for ESPN, Diana Taurasi left the Mercury and the WNBA completely to play basketball full-time for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia due to its financial upgrade from the American league. “We had to go to a communist country to get paid like capitalists, which is so backward to everything that was in the history books in sixth grade,” Taurasi told ESPNW reporter Josh Weinfuss. “And even then, even within our pay scale, it doesn’t make sense. On a team, you could have seven players making the same amount of money. That doesn’t make sense to me.” In 2014, Taurasi made just under the WNBA league maximum of $104,000. UMMC paid her nearly $1.5 million in 2015. Elected officials and civil rights activists have already cried foul on social
media due to Griner’s hue being darker than blue. “We cannot ignore the fact that if Brittney Griner wasn’t a Black woman, it would be plastered across the news she is being held as a political prisoner in Russia,” said U.S. Congresswoman Cori Bush on Twitter. New York Public Advocate and gubernatorial candidate Jumaane Williams took to Twitter as well and referred to Griner as a “political prisoner” and hopped on the bandwagon stating, “You may not know & it’s not headline news because…There’s a BLACK WOMAN happens to actually be a @WNBA star being held as a political prisoner.” Griner is also a Black, queer woman. Russia has come under fire for its antiLGBTQ policies and its attacks of members. That, combined with the type of disinformation that swayed the 2016 U.S. Presidential election to Donald Trump, throws another wrench into the problem. But with all attempts to make noise surrounding the detaining of Griner, according to some sportswriters/commentators, it may be a good thing that it isn’t a bigger story. On a recent “ESPN Daily” podcast, long-time ESPN investigative reporter and former New York Daily News writer T.J. Quinn said that Putin would notice and metaphorically dangle Griner, which put Americans in a tough position. “If it becomes political, then her life is in the hands of no man…,” said Quinn. “If he decided, ‘I want to make an example of her because she’s a powerful cultural symbol…she’s a 6’9”, Black, gay American woman.”

the level of competition was high. There are new things to learn in wheelchair basketball in terms of technique and conditioning. A difference between stand-up and wheelchair basketball is the camaraderie. “To meet such wonderful people,” Jones said. “In stand-up basketball, it’s just competition, but here because it’s a small but growing community, there is so much to learn and everyone is so open to teach you. Even though we’re competing, it’s a bond.” Jones described a moment during a game when someone on her team fell out of her chair. Even the opponents came to help her up. At the end, everyone clapped and laughed before switching back to competition mode. While it was initially difficult to readjust to being a college student, she’s been able to get into the groove thanks to the support system at Hostos. “You have the resources you need to be successful,” Jones said. “Coming in as a student with a disability, the accommodations that they met me with were mind-blowing. “When I first got sick, there were a couple of years where I sat and thought, ‘What am I going to do with my life?’” she added. “This is the answer. I get back into school, I get my degree and I can have a career.”
CUNY’s Seira Larrauri Garcia breaks barriers with Team USA invite By JAIME C. HARRIS AmNews Sports Editor Barriers are temporary. Queens college junior Seira Larrauri has further affirmed this adage by making CUNY history. The native of Puerto Rico became the first CUNY athlete while still a student to ever receive an invitation to a USA national team tryout in any sport with her invite to the 2022 Selection Camp for the U.S. women’s wheelchair basketball national team. Several former student-athletes tried out or competed at Queens College junior and wheelchair athlete Seira Larrauri Garcia has become the first CUNY student-athlete to be invited to a Team USA tryout in any sport (CUNY Athletics photo) the Paralympic level either before or after they participated in inclusive sports rado April 12-16. CUNY is cheering loudly as she pursues her Paralympic dreams.” Garcia led Team CUNY in scoring this season at 16.5 points per game in their first year competing in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. She was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes, a degenerative disease that affects the hip joint, at age 7. Ten years later, in 2014, the disease ended Garcia’s participation in standing basketball. She was only 17. It didn’t stop her from engaging in a game she clearly loves. Garcia began to play with FEBASIRU, Puerto Rico’s wheelchair basketball team and ultimately for CUNY beginning in 2020. She was subsequently overjoyed upon learning about the Team USA honor. “I had to read the email three times to make sure it was real,” she said. “The mind is more powerful than anything else…Life can be great, if you allow it to be.”

The Knicks reach the development and evaluation stage of the season By JAIME C. HARRIS AmNews Sports Editor Development and evaluation of players, especially young players, is an ongoing process. For some teams, such as the Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic, who currently have the four worst records in the NBA and had virtually no possibility of making the playoffs when this season began, the entire 2021-22 season has been an exercise in rebuilding. Conversely, the Knicks, who finished last season 41-31 and the No. 4 seed in the East, had a well grounded view they would be a postseason problem for the opposition this year and go further than their first round exit to the Atlanta Hawks. But those same Hawks, and their theatrical point guard Trae Young, came into New York on HBCU night at Madison Square
Garden and were as funky as the Delaware State marching band, which performed for the amped up crowd. They unofficially put the Knicks in the development and evaluation phase of their season with a 117-111 win. Young blistered the Knicks for 45 points and incited the fans that packed MSG as he did last May and June in the playoffs. The Hawks, No. 10 in the East, bolstered their odds of making the PlayIn Tournament by improving to 36-36. They had nine games remaining after facing the Pistons last night on the road. The Knicks, who played without Julius Randle (sore right quadriceps tendon), were in the 12th spot and 30-42 before going into their game against the Hornets last night in Charlotte. They were six games under the Hawks and also had nine games left on their schedule. The PlayIn will be composed of the 7-10 seeds in the Eastern and West-
ern Conferences. “I mean, the thing is we’re shorthanded,” said Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau following the loss to the Hawks. “Obviously it’s not only Julius, but it’s Derrick [Rose, out with an ankle injury]. It’s Nerlens [Noel, out with plantar fasciitis]. But it also gives other guys an opportunity and so I thought we got some production from a lot of guys and I thought they played well.” Randle, despite a dropoff from his All-
NBA Second Team selection in 2021, leads the team in scoring (20.4) rebounds (10) and assists (5.1). R.J. Barrett said the Knicks, although the results have not been favorable, have played with the gravity of a team with high expectations. “We’ve played with a sense of urgency all year,” asserted Barrett. “We just fight. That’s what we do. We’ve been playing great basketball honestly, especially since the All-Star break. But some of these games have slipped away. There’s nothing else we can do besides get better every day.” Prior to playing the Hornets last night, the Knicks, who will be in Miami tomorrow to face the Heat, will take on the Pistons on Sunday in Detroit and come back to the Garden on Monday to host the Chicago Bulls, were 5-8 since the All-Star break.

He was taken out of the game at 8:33 of the fourth quarter by head coach Steve Nash after hitting his 60th point. On the night, Irving, who was averaging 27.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists heading into the game against the Grizzlies, shot 20-31, 8-12 on 3-pointers and 12-13 from the foul line. “A few shots I probably shouldn’t have taken,” he said afterwards. “Tough ones, with double-teams and triple-teams coming, but as long as I can do it with a smile on my face, and my teammates weren’t too angry with me, it was worthwhile.” Not having Irving at home means other players have to fill the offensive hole. Kevin Durant will continue to put up big numbers, as he leads the team in scoring at 29.6 prior to facing Memphis. Veteran guards Seth Curry (15.5) and Patty Mills (12.2, 40.9% on threes) can ably provide an offense lift. But the Nets cannot win a championship or even the East with a part-time Irving. After the Heat, the Nets will host the Hornets on Sunday and the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday at the Barclays.

That level of maturity is hard when you have a young team, but she has it and it was really good for her to step up to the challenge and make plays that she knew she could make, but also weren’t totally out of the box or gambling in situations. I feel the plays she was able to make were within how we were trying to game plan and execute defensively. She has a really good instinct. Jaida is still getting comfortable with our system. Vanessa James and Eric Radford head to the World Championships By LOIS ELFMAN Special to the AmNews Olympic and World competition are nothing new to Vanessa James and Eric Radford, but this week marks the Canadian pair team’s debut as a partnership at the World Figure Skating Championships. Skating together for one year, the duo finished 12th at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, but with the absence of the Russian pairs and the Olympic gold medalists from China, they are hopeful of moving closer to the medal podium. Since competing in Beijing, James, 34, and Radford, 37, spent time in Europe performing with Art on Ice, which both found exhilarating. “Not only did we really enjoy ourselves, but I think that training-wise it left us in a really good place,” said Radford. Once they returned to their training base in Montreal their practices were very productive. James, who was born in Canada, described herself as “super motivated” heading into the World Championships,
which are being held in France, the country that she represented at three previous Olympics and 10 World Championships. At the Olympics, James and Radford participated in both the figure skating team event, which was at the start of the Games, and in the pairs competition, which was the final skating event. Sports Saint Peter’s takes a short drive to the Sweet 16 By VINCENT DAVIS Special to the AmNews
The saying “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” often applies to sports. The case of the Saint Peter’s Peacocks men’s basketball team is a good example. After losing to the Siena Saints 84-70 Feb. 20 for the second time this season, giving them a record of 12-11 and 10-6 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Saint Peter’s won seven straight games, including a 60-54 win over Monmouth in the MAAC championship, to earn an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament and a No. 15 seed in the East region. Before entering the field of 68 single-elimination tournament, St. Peter’s was 19-11, representing the small, private Jesuit university in Jersey City, New Jersey that began the school year with a combined undergraduate and graduate school enrollment of a little more than 3,000 students. Two wins later, they are 21-11 and have captured the attention of the nation.
