he Marathon des Sables (the Sahara Marathon) is an ultramarathon which is held in the south of Morocco every year. Competitors run six marathons in seven days over a distance of 251km and it is one of the hardest footraces on Earth. Each year about 1,200 runners pay around 5000 euros to take part. There are six stages to the race which involve crossing over

Except for water, runners can carry only 6.4kg-15kg. Everyone must carry some essential items (for example, a sleeping bag, sun cream, a whistle and a head torch). Each runner can have 1.5 litres of water at the start of the day and then get extra water at checkpoints along the way. At night runners are allowed another 4.5 litres for cooking and washing as well as for drinking. The runners sleep together in tents. Temperatures in the Moroccan Desert can reach 40 or even 50 degrees with strong winds and sandstorms. The desert is not only hot sand but is also full of stones and rocks. As a result, runners sometimes fall over and hurt themselves. Running in these conditions is extremely tiring, and although runners wear special clothes

5 Which advertisement would best describe the Sahara Marathon?

A It’s worth paying more for the best race of your life! B A powerful body is not enough to win this race! C Join the footrace where everyone reaches the finishing line! D Be the first person to win the toughest race on Earth twice!

to stop sand getting in their socks and trainers, each night they have to treat very painful feet and toes. Frenchman Patrick Bauer created the race after he walked across the Sahara in 1984 on his own, covering 350km in 12 days carrying everything he needed. He set up the Marathon des Sables in 1986 because he wanted others to experience the race, but with one simple rule: runners must carry all their food, clothes and sleeping gear they need throughout the race. The biggest challenges of the race are getting thirsty and tired. Many say that physical fitness is not enough – runners also need to be mentally stronger than their body when it wants to stop. Many do not complete the race. Others do the race year after year, and a very few have ever won the race more than once!
A He ran across the Sahara with a friend. B He set up the race two years after his experience. C He made a number of rules for the marathon. D He only carried a sleeping bag with him.

Active Passive
6
Grammar Bank
New technology is developed every day. subject
The passive focuses attention on the object of the verb (in the example, this is ‘new technology’). The object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.
We form the Past simple passive with the past of be + the past participle of the main verb.
The passive with by + agent To say who or what does or did the action (the agent) in a sentence in the passive voice, we use by. New technology is developed by scientists around the world every day. However, we don’t usually use by + agent when the agent is: • obvious The first Apple iPhone was sold in 2007 (by Apple).
We use the Present simple passive for:
• unimportant Steve Jobs was liked and respected (by everyone in the company).
• facts that are generally true A lot of electronic devices are made in China.
• unknown My iPhone was stolen. (I don’t know who stole it.)
Present simple passive
• regular actions Diving classes are held every Saturday. • steps in a process The devices are designed in California. Then they’re built in China, and after that they’re shipped all over the world.
Affirmatives and Negatives The equipment
is / isn’t
made in China.
Smoke signals
are / aren’t
used today.
Interrogatives Is
the equipment
made in China?
Are
smoke signals
used today?
We use with, not by, when the agent is a tool. He was killed with a knife (by a stranger).
Verbs + infinitive or + -ing form A verb can be followed by the full infinitive (to read), infinitive without to (become) or the -ing form (trying).
Are you into (x 3) • Do you have a favourite (x 2) • don’t mind • I can’t • I love listening I like going • I’m not that interested • I’m really into (x 2) • I play

(not: I would rather to listen…) You had better do your homework. (not: You had better to do…)
We use the Past simple passive for: • facts from history The pyramids were built 5,000 years ago. • past processes or events After the battle, the town was left empty. was / wasn’t
explored last year.
The caves
were / weren’t
discovered in 1850.
Interrogatives Was

the caves

We understand better now how the environment affects / is affected by the products that we buy. In the past, most products, such as food, are / were produced locally, often just a few miles away. Nowadays, products are / had transported over great distances, often from other countries. Take the milk. It may be / may have been driven the length of the country to get to your town. What’s more, it’s possible that the carton that the milk comes in had been made / making even further away, on the other side of the world. 6 The environment is / was constantly damaged by pollution from all the transportation required to get our daily milk on the table. 7 We must also think about what happens to the carton after it has been / was thrown away. 8 If the carton hadn’t been / isn’t recycled, it will be buried under the ground or burned, which releases greenhouse gases. So, if you can get your food locally, do.

Marathon des
Sables
T
he Marathon des Sables (the Sahara Marathon) is an ultramarathon which is held in the south of Morocco every year. Competitors run six marathons in seven days over a distance of 251km and it is one of the hardest footraces on Earth. Each year about 1,200 runners pay around 5000 euros to take part. There are six stages to the race which involve crossing over
80km of desert with just one rest day. The longest single stage in 2009 was 91 km. Running in these conditions is extremely tiring, and although runners wear special clothes
to stop sand getting in their socks and trainers, each night they have to treat very painful feet and toes.
2 What does the text say about what the runners can carry?
5 Which advertisement would best describe the Sahara Marathon?
A B C D
A It’s worth paying more for the best race of your life! B A powerful body is not enough to win this race! C Join the footrace where everyone reaches the finishing line! D Be the first person to win the toughest race on Earth twice!
They can carry up to 15kg including water. Runners can only get water once a day. All runners have to carry some essential items. Runners are allowed 4.5 litres of water per day.
3 The text tells us that the runners have to deal with… A B C D
sore feet every day. very low temperatures at night. falling rocks and stones. sand in their eyes.
4 What does the text say about Patrick Bauer? A B C D
He ran across the Sahara with a friend. He set up the race two years after his experience. He made a number of rules for the marathon. He only carried a sleeping bag with him.
4 Work in pairs. Take turns to ask and answer the questions.
