Phileas Fogg is an English gentleman. He lives in London with his servant, Passepartout.
One day, Phileas Fogg is at the Reform Club and he hears his friends talking about a thief. The thief, after robbing a bank, is running away.
– He can go far if he goes by ship or by train… – says a man.
– I don’t think so, – says another man.
– I think he can go around the world in 80 days, – says Phileas Fogg.
– Oh, no! That’s impossible! – say the other men.
– I’m sure he can, and I want to demonstrate it. I want to do a trip around the world in 80 days and show you that I’m right, – says Phileas Fogg.
– Let’s bet! You have to be back in 80 days, at 8:45 pm on the 21st of December, – say the men.
– Fine. Let’s bet! – answers Phileas Fogg.
Detective Fix from Scotland Yard is following the bank thief. Phileas Fogg and Passepartout are ready to sail on the Mongolia ship towards Bombay.
When Fix meets Passepartout at the port, he believes that Fogg is the thief, but he can’t arrest him without an approval from London. So he sends a telegram to Scotland Yard and waits for a reply.
Phileas Fogg, Passepartout and Fix leave England towards Bombay, India, on the same ship.
From Bombay, Phileas Fogg and Passepartout catch a train to Calcutta, a three-day trip. Fix can’t arrest Fogg: he still waits for a telegram from Scotland Yard. After two days, the train stops because the railway isn’t finished. Fogg buys an elephant to get to the next part of the railway. On their way to the next stop, Fogg and Passepartout see a big fire where a funeral is taking place: people burn a dead man and his wife. They see that the woman is not dead, so they save her and run away. Her name is Auda.
Phileas Fogg, Passepartout and Auda arrive in Calcutta 23 days after leaving London – on time to be back after 80 days!
Fix still wants to arrest Fogg, but the telegram from London is late, so he can only follow him. They all get on the same ship towards Hong Kong, where Auda wants to meet her uncle.
From Hong Kong they have to catch a ship to Yokohama, in Japan.
Auda decides to go with Phileas Fogg and Passepartout: her uncle doesn’t live in Hong Kong anymore, now he lives in Europe.
In Hong Kong, Fix meets Passepartout and invites him to drink together. Passepartout gets drunk and Fix leaves him alone. Fogg and Auda (and Fix with them) miss the ship: if they stay in Hong Kong, he can’t win his bet. Fogg rents a boat to go to Shanghai and Fix goes with them, as he still waits for the telegram from London. They can’t find Passepartout, so they leave without him. There’s a big storm and they are late again for Fogg’s bet.
Passepartout wakes up, remembers everything and catches a ship to Yokohama. There he catches another ship that goes to San Francisco, in California.
Fogg, Auda and Fix arrive in Yokohama thanks to a ship that rescues them after the storm and there they catch a ship towards San Francisco: the same ship where Passepartout is! They are very happy to be together again.
They arrive in San Francisco on the 6th of December. The same night, they have to catch a train to New York and then a ship to Liverpool.
The train leaves on time, but they are attacked by a group of Sioux.
The Sioux kidnap Passepartout and two other men and Fogg decides to save them. It doesn’t matter if he can’t win his bet: he doesn’t want to leave his servant.
Fogg finds Passepartout and the two men but the train isn’t there anymore. One of the men has got a sleigh, so Fogg asks him to take them all to Omaha where they can catch another train to Chicago and then go to New York, but they arrive in New York too late to catch the ship to Liverpool. They have to find a different way to go back to England. The next day they buy a boat and leave towards Liverpool, where they arrive on the 21st of December, on time to win the bet. But when they get there, Fix arrests Fogg, as he finally has got the telegram from London.
Fogg spends three hours in jail and then he is free: the real thief is in jail already. But they are late for the train to London. They catch another train but they arrive in London too late.
Fogg is very sorry, but it’s too late. He doesn’t go to the Reform Club. He stays home with Auda and asks her to marry him. She accepts and they decide to get married on Monday.
The next day, twenty-five hours after arriving in London, Passepartout tells Mr Fogg that he can’t get married the next day because it’s Sunday.
– It can’t be Sunday tomorrow, today is Sunday, – says Fogg.
– No, today is Saturday. You can still win your bet!
They all run to the Reform Club, where they arrive one only minute before it’s too late. Phileas Fogg wins his bet!
