EXPLORING MASS / A NEW CONCEPT OF COURTYARD Cultural Centre in the city centre of Pavia The graduation project of my Master at Tu Eindhoven represents both a theoretical study on Massive Architecture and its behaviour in space, and an application of this type of architecture in the structured urban pattern of Pavia, town in Norther Italy. The urban analysis explores solids and voids and its inversion, transforming solid in void and vice versa. Moreover the role of courtyard typology in the area gives an input for spatial organization of the new building. The program is Cultural Centre with different functions, but working as an unity in the building. The architecture explores Massiveness by using sculptural volumes and thick walls as a new interpretation of traditional forms. The user experiences space which changes at each point in the architecture, moving through different kinds of space: covered, semi, uncovered and open, semi, closed. The connection among them generates semi-spaces, spaces explicitly in between others. This gives a special complexity to the design. Each space indicates a change, a transition, the same as the portico does in the courtyard typology, by linking building (solid/ closed) and yard (void/open). The initial impression of a homogeneous block of concrete reveals instead a variation in materiality and texture. Smooth polished surfaces merge with free disposition of independent volumes at ground floor; while rough facade of first level emphasizes the monolithic character of the auditorium volume, more enclosed and reachable through one entrance. 4

ESCAPING SERAING / INTO ACTIVITY
Workshops in the industrial landscape of Seraing, Liège
Escaping Seraing is a project which focuses on the difficult situation in Seraing, an industrial municipality part of the Liège agglomeration. After the the flourishing period of industrial activity, which attracted generations of employees from several parts of Europe, the city became a sort of no men’s land, with degradation and poverty. Now the different ethnic groups (Belgian, Gypsy, Slav etc...) live together, but without social spaces and meeting points. The industrial heritage of the location has been used as main concept in the project, which takes place in a disused shed along the old railway. The idea is to create activities for the population through handcraft, that recalls the productive identity of the city, and urban agriculture, in order to give more economical independence and instablish a small trade in the neighbourhood. The project merges working with living, by using movable units organized in two levels (private and public), creating at the same time a flexible space for meetings, exhibitions, public events... The design proposes steels structures in relationship with the old brick walls, introducing new materials as policarbonate panels as well.

FRAME PAVILION / WORKSHOP EXTENSION
Architecture Workshop in Tu/e Campus The course Production & Parts of the Master in Architecture at Tu Eindhoven allows students to deal with technological details, materials and design process in a creative and pragmatic way. The first assigment of the course consisted in building a technological detail, particulary interesting for materials connection, quality, technology etc.. , in 1:1 scale from an existing building of a famous, or not, architect. The second assigment proposes as topic the extension of the already existing workshop of the Architecture Department in the campus of Tu Eindhoven, by taking in account the materials and techiniques used in the first assigment. The extension of the workshop is located close to the Architecture Deparment in order to make transportation of physical models and materials easier. The building represents a system of modular blocks made out of wooden beams and wooden panels 1mx 2m, handy to move even by two people. The panels are assembled through wood joinery (dovetail joint), which is also simple to be unbuilt and built again, without damaging any part. The whole pavilion follows the idea of re-use for its technological details, but also for its flexible design, that can change, according to the size and the features of the prefabricated elements (mechanical characteristics and feature of the materials itself). The pavilion is then an example of an architecture possible to be built directly onthe location, temporary and practical in its features. 14

COLOGNE /
LEARNING FROM HAHNENSTRASSE Offices and ateliers in the new Masterplan of Cologne The project in Hahnenstrasse in Cologne proposes a new redefinition of the western part of the city, in between Medieval traces and modernist architecture. The first phase was about planning the urban environment and deciding what to keep of the modernist housing block. Entrances, circulation, programs, relationship with the city centre were the main guidelines for this stage. After that rough shapes and height of the buildings were decided and each student of the Masterplan group had a building to design. My project is located in the easter part of the masterplan with offices program. The architecture works with sunlight and the position of the building itself, in order to provide a spatial quality and benefit for the people who work there. The interior organisation of the building shows a patio and free plans for the four levels. The open space is the place for working and independent volumes are set as private offices, meeting rooms, coffe break rooms, welcome rooms. The idea is then to create a social working environment, where employees cooperate and share their ideas and projects in a suitable space. The standard alienated3mx3m office room is overtaken; the employees has a visual connection with the city outside also thanks to the glass facade and blinds system, which regulates the amount of sunlight coming inside.

SCALO FARINI/
HABITAT, LIVING AND SOCIALIZING SPACE Urban park in the rail yard Scalo Farini in Milan The Urban Planning Studio Course proposes an urban renewal in the area of Scalo Farini, the largest rail yard in the centre of Milan. Students are asked to devise an urban park and an urban environment linked to this green area. Preliminary analysis identifies different factors and dynamics in the urban context: functions, social zoning, mobility and economical patterns. Through residential neighbourhoods, public buildings, offices, educational and culture structures, the project aims to re-connect a disused zone with the urban environment of the city centre. The project cosists in designing a urban park, occupying 50% of the site area. It represents not only a green area, but a complex space with walkways, gardens and social activities, that becomes a point of attraction for the whole new district. A strong border of the residential neighbouhood, in the northern site area, divides private and public spaces and identifies a district with its own independence and identity. Exploring different typologies (courtyard houses, towers, apartments blocks) and various functions (housing, offices, shops, commercial, services) the neighbourhood ensures a beneficial mixture and a continous presence of human activities during the day time, preventing isolation and degraded areas. Moreover priority for bikes and pedestrian mobility contributes to a dynamic and sustainable environment, increasing public transport and removing traffic out from the project site.

PROFESSIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE at .Fabric, Amsterdam
During my internship at .Fabric, architectural office in Amsterdam i have been working on several projects, which helped me to face the practical aspects about designing and present your work. The most important project the office dealed with was the Urban Metabolism for the Biennale of Architecture in Rotterdam 2014. It consists of complex urban strategies for the city of Rotterdam and its region, based on 9 flows and the urban waste of the city itself. I took care of the design of the model Creating Biotopes, which shows the landfarming areas combined with new infrastructres (railways), harbour and terraces for plants and algae. The other two main projects face more architectural issues. One is an apartments block and the other one the interior of a loft, both are going to be built. In both cases, I had to work on different solutions for details and materials. My responsability was to contact materials suppliers to find the best solution in term of design and costs. It was a really good experience in order to face the profession in a mature way, different from the academic one.

GRAPHICS/EDITORIAL SeminArch, Archiprint, Graduation book Design of Layout for Magazines and booklets Beside architectural projects, another inspiring field and application is graphica design and editorial. I mainly developed layouts for magazines related to architetural topics and released in the Eindhoven University of Technology. SeminArch SeminArch is a collection of essays from the Seminar course about Thing Theory and Urban Objects at EXPO ‘58. Each student wrote about a topic related to the EXPO in Bruxelles, approaching the issue according to theory, architecture of pavilions and role of the EXPO itself. Archiprint It is the magazine of the Architecture Department of the Tu Eindhoven. Each issue deals with one particular topic (presentating Architecture, architectural competitions, research issue). The magazine proposes articles and interviews from teachers, students and professional architects and firms. Graduation Book My thesis “ Exploring Mass, A new courtyard in the city centre of Pavia”cosists of two parts: the theoretical research/essay and architectural project. The work of one year is organized in this book, which includes all the phases of the process, references and final images of the design. I made the design of the book, both the layout and the cover, that is a silk screen print on cardboard. 30
