Architecture + Agroforestry
Type: Research project
Location: Netherlands, Italy
Program: biobased materials, planting
Year: 2021-ongoing
Tasks: concept, text, diagrams
Extra: waiting for funds response (Stimulering Fonds)
The Archiforestry project explores the intersections between architecture & agroforestry, focusing on the role of plants and vegetation. On one hand the research fosters the role of trees as a design tool, collecting examples of plants’ benefits and uses. On the other hand, a study about biobased materials derived from plants unfolds solutions for reducing the carbon footprint of the building industry through regenerative agriculture practices.
As multidisciplinary collaboration, the study intends to involve professionals from different fields of expertise through a holistic approach. The research provides comprehensive content for regenerative projects in architecture & agriculture, encouraging a biophilic approach towards use of resources, soil consumption, and space management. Final output of the research shall be an open souce online platform with contents about plants, biobased materials and their production through agroforestry systems.

Hangar on stilts
River as ecological corridor
Type: Terraviva Competitions
Location: Pavia, IT
Program: Renovation, urban intervention Year: 2021
Tasks: concept, design, drawings, images
Team: Samuele Di Filippo
The proposal is conceived as a multiscale project. First step was the analysis of the building in its context, in fact the landscape plays an important role in terms of use and future development of the existing building. We identified the Hangar as a new feature along the already rich ensemble of activities along the river Ticino. The project is a space where nature and sport merge, a social and public place, where visitors are invited to use sports facilities (gym, canoes lab), learn about local flora and fauna and explore the nature reserve of the Ticino Park. On the architecture level, the project keeps alive the identity of the Hydroplane Hangar designed by Pagano as indisputable landmark; while integrating the natural element into the architecture. Green walls, gardens on stilts and a greenhouse transform the building into a living organism, active and selfsustained. The proposal invites the community to observe, learn, stay active and explore nature.

Team: E. Barbieri, E. Corsi, R. Spalacci, F. Zannoni
Hortus Extra Moenia is a regenerative urban project, that aims to create a space for the community, designed and managed by the local community itself. Located by the secondary train station of Prato Borgonuovo, the area is an empty grass field at the intersection of 4 different neighborhoods, marked by road and railway infrastructures, in between city and old manifactures area. The social and cultural richness of the place invites to imagine a place where people grow, share and manage a small Food forest, with fruits and vegetables. The car parking covered by temporary green canopies hosts local markets and events, while the wild flowers area can be used as an open air lab for schools and workshops. Our proposal is to bring nature in the city, providing tools for understanding, taking care and maintain a common good.

The idea behind Archipelago Garden is to raise awareness about issues related to climate change, such as climate refugees. There are areas of the world where migratory flow is already underway due to submersion of emerged lands and rise of temperatures. Taking inspiration from the case of Marshall Islands, in danger and vulnerable; we designed a garden with islands-shaped flowerbeds with specific selection of plants species (edible, local species, official and flowers). Some ‘‘islands’’ are raised from the floor (30 cm), others come as a result of depaving concrete tiles. Movable sitting elements are conceived as floating trunks among the islands. The garden is located at the entrance of the Aquarium in Genoa, city unfortunately famous for floads and its high percentage of paved surfaces. The archipelago that emerges from the concrete is a symbol of the direction that humanity must follow: let nature emerge and know how to live with it respectfully.

Rolling Stores
Competition entry
Type: Competition by Non Architecture Competitions
Location: Everywhere
Program: Retail unit, urban intervention Year: 2019
Surface: variable (about 30 m²)
Tasks: concept, design, drawings and modelling
In February 2019 Non Architecture Competitions launched its ninth competition, “Buying – Alternative designs for Shops”, asking creative people from all around the world to think about innovative design concepts for Shops. Projects from the three winners and 38 finalists are collected in one book. The “Rolling Stores” project by myself and Elisa Cardinali also appears among the finalists. Our idea is a mobile shop unit that moves as a tram, on railways. As public transport Rolling Stores have a timetable, easy to check via an app or at the stop. Each unit is made with wooden panels, with a modular system to organize displayers and shelves. The Rolling Stores bring exchange and market troughout the city, creating a connection among all neighbourhoods, against the onefunction zoning in urban areas.

In 2019, the House of Representatives, the Central Government Real Estate Agency and the Architekten Cie., with Pi de Bruijn as integral advisor, developed the renovation concept for the House of Representatives building in close collaboration. This concept defines the functional interventions that are desired in addition to the technical renovation. (from Architekten Cie website)
My contribution to the project of the Parlament has focused mainly on the public entrance in the main square, in collaboration with the landscape studio Karres en Brands. The square meant as a public, welcoming and democratic space is organized through a stepping terrein heading towards the actual entrance at -1 level. The enclosing round shape provides sitting elements, green and a gathering feeling; improving the current square layout with clear pedestrain paths, limits and framing of the public space.

Surface: new 40.000 m²
Client: Klepierre
Winning project from the competition, the refurbishment of the Shopping Centre Alexandrium interests only a portion of the whole intervention by Architekten Cie . The project includes a new roof, new ceiling design and shopdividers. The challenge during the process has been to conceive a clear language, that could put together different spaces of the mall, which went through a lot of renovation phases and mismanagment. The new ceiling design has organic shaped skylights in the corridors and it copes with different corridors’ heights, guiding the visitor in the space. In the junctions, new suspended lighting fixtures are set, in combination with sitting elements. The shopdividers present a clean design with stone plinth and white column, creating a pleasant facade rhythm.

Type: 1st Prize Competition (tender)
Location: Arnhem, NL
Program: Concert Hall
Year: 2015-2017, built
Surface: new 5.950 m², existing 3.870 m²
Client: City of Arnhem
Tasks: design, drawings and modelling
Musis Sacrum is from 1847 an important landmark for music in the city of Arnhem. The building passed through several renovation and building works, until the competition of 2014 that decided the demolition of the addition from the ‘60s. The proposal for the extension of Musis Sacrum aims to preserve the monumental brick building and to give more importance to the landscape of Musis Park. The project is conceived as an open-side pavillion in the green. The ground floor consists of a glass facade, creating a constant relationship between the outside and the foyer. Existing and new are bound by a common plinth, that creates space at its front, an urbane setting in the centre of the park, which serves as an extension of the foyers. The new hall is cladded with wooden panels on the inside, and on the outside with green ceramic profiles. The hall has a big window behind the stage, that opens towards the park and acts as a green backdrop for performances.

Together with the renovation and new building of Musis Sacrum, Van Dongen Koschuch Architects got also the commision for designing interior elements and choosing furniture for main spaces such as foyers, bars, changing rooms, concert halls and offices. Stricly connected to the architecture, the interior elements use same or similar materials, like bronze and wood, creating a fine and pleasant atmospher. The interiors in fact don’t dominate the architecture, but they simply enhance it. Custom-made objects such as bars and paintries show clean lines and shapes, they were thought to be flexible in order to be moved in the building, according to different events and performances. Great attention was also given to the users, their inputs were a foundamental aspect during the design fase.

Year: 2016 (competition)

Client: Municipality of Rotterdam
Tasks: diagrams & 3d modelling
Huis Op Zuid is a competition held by Municipality of Rotterdam, in order to offer new activities and housing to the Southern part of Rotterdam, which is now on the spot for new urban/architectural projects. The program includes a sport centre with swimming pool, a primary school and apartments. At ground floor the entraces are grouped by function and this aspect gives each user his own identity and orientation in the building. The school for instance is accessible by a patio that becomes also playground for the kids. The project is characterized by strong horizontal bends, that alternate bricks and glass, solid and transparency. The organization of the program shows rationality in space and, from the user’s experience, a continous visual connection through the diffrent functions, by using higher platforms and double height ceiling.
